- increases. Under the modified mutation-drift hypothesis of genetic polymorphism, the proportion of mutations that are effectively neutral and average heterozygosity should increase with this ratio. Invertebrates, because of their small size, fast development, and low degree of homeostasis (relative to vertebrates), are expected to show a larger environmental component of phenotypic variation than vertebrates. This may help explain why invertebrates are in general more genetically variable than vertebrates and why, when laboratory populations ofDrosophila are maintained in heterogeneous environments, genetic variability is lost less rapidly than when they are kept in constant conditions. 相似文献

A cross-sectional study of the relation between symptoms and physical findings in computer operators

A peripheral nerve-involvement is suggested from the common presence of a triad of symptoms consisting of pain, paraestesiae and subjective weakness, and from physical findings suggesting neuropathy. The European Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus, Linnaeus, 1758) represents one of the most important fishery resources in some areas of the Mediterranean. This short-lived, small pelagic fish is characterized by large interannual fluctuations, probably as a result of environmental variability. As part of the European Project Med 98-070, the main aim of which was the study of the anchovy population in the Strait of Sicily, icthyoplankton surveys were carried out between 1999 and 2001, during the peak spawning season for anchovy. Present work reports the relationship between meso-zooplankton biomass and the abundance of anchovy eggs and larvae in the Strait of Sicily. Data on anchovy egg abundance showed that the main spawning area was located in the north-western region of the study area. The branch of the Atlantic Ionian Stream, running parallel to the southern Sicilian coast, acts as a transport mechanism for anchovy eggs and larvae towards the southernmost end of the island, off Cape Passero. Observed distributions were largely consistent with local hydrographic features, which allow larvae to be retained in areas providing the necessary feeding conditions for recruitment success. 相似文献

Background
Excessive time in front of a single or several screens could explain a displacement of physical activity. The present study aimed at determining whether screen-time is associated with a reduced level of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in Spanish adolescents living in favorable environmental conditions.Methodology/Principal Findings
A multi-stage stratified random sampling method was used to select 3503 adolescents (12–18 years old) from the school population of Gran Canaria, Spain. MVPA, screen-time in front of television, computer, video game console and portable console was assessed in the classroom by fulfilling a standardized questionnaire. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses adjusted by a set of social-environmental variables were carried out. Forty-six percent of girls (95% CI±2.3%) and 26% of boys (95% CI±2.1%) did not meet the MVPA recommendations for adolescents. Major gender differences were observed in the time devoted to vigorous PA, video games and the total time spent on screen-based activities. Boys who reported 4 hours•week−1 or more to total screen-time showed a 64% (OR = 0.61, 95% CI, 0.44–0.86) increased risk of failing to achieve the recommended adolescent MVPA level. Participation in organized physical activities and sports competitions were more strongly associated with MVPA than screen-related behaviors.Conclusions/Significance
No single screen-related behavior explained the reduction of MVPA in adolescents. However, the total time accumulated through several screen-related behaviors was negatively associated with MVPA level in boys. This association could be due to lower availability of time for exercise as the time devoted to sedentary screen-time activities increases. Participation in organized physical activities seems to counteract the negative impact of excessive time in front of screens on physical activity. 相似文献7.

Characteristics of 32 freshwater lakes in central and western Nova Scotia were quantified to determine the relative influence of various biological, chemical, and physical factors on habitat selection by black ducks (Anas rubripes Brewster) during brood-rearing. Acidity and trophic status varied greatly among the waterbodies, of which 20 were used by black ducks for rearing their young. Duck brood density was positively related to lake trophic status. The highest brood densities occurred on hypertrophic waterbodies with a large anthropogenic input of nutrients.Lakes with black duck broods had significantly higher concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen, darker water with more dissolved organic carbon, and within the littoral zone, greater macrophyte cover, greater density and biomass of pelagic invertebrates, gentler slopes, and a softer, more organic substrate. Similar trends were observed within a subset of 17 acidic lakes (pH 5.5), 8 of which supported black ducks.The density of black duck broods was significantly correlated with 17 of 20 variables, most notably total phosphorus (r= + 0.81). Partial correlation (removing the effect of total phosphorus) revealed that brood density was significantly correlated with the abundances of pelagic (r= + 0.77) and benthic (r= + 0.68) invertebrates, macrophyte cover (r= + 0.52), and substrate score (r= + 0.57), but not with other chemical variables, including pH.Our results suggest that quality brood-rearing habitat is distinguished by a combination of factors, especially available nutrients, macrophyte cover, and invertebrates, subject to constraints imposed by physical characteristics of the littoral zone of the lake. Interval timing in the seconds-to-minutes range is crucial to learning, memory, and decision-making. Recent findings argue for the involvement of cortico-striatal circuits that are optimized by the dopaminergic modulation of oscillatory activity and lateral connectivity at the level of cortico-striatal inputs. Striatal medium spiny neurons are proposed to detect the coincident activity of specific beat patterns of cortical oscillations, thereby permitting the discrimination of supra-second durations based upon the reoccurring patterns of subsecond neural firing. This proposal for the cortico-striatal representation of time is consistent with the observed psychophysical properties of interval timing (e.g. linear time scale and scalar variance) as well as much of the available pharmacological, lesion, patient, electrophysiological, and neuroimaging data from animals and humans (e.g. dopamine-related timing deficits in Huntington's and Parkinson's disease as well as related animal models). The conclusion is that although the striatum serves as a 'core timer', it is part of a distributed timing system involving the coordination of large-scale oscillatory networks. 相似文献

Distribution of macroinvertebrates in relation to physical and biological variables in the littoral zone of nine New Zealand lakes 总被引:1,自引:5,他引:1
Macroinvertebrates play a key role in the littoral zone of lakes. Macroinvertebrate community composition is closely linked to habitat conditions. To date, there have been few attempts to relate macroinvertebrates to habitat factors in lakes. In this study, nine mainly oligotrophic lakes from throughout New Zealand were surveyed for macroinvertebrates. The lakes were selected to represent a range of suspended sediment loading and lake level regimes. Within each lake, several sites were selected to provide a range of exposure to wave action. A multiple regression approach was taken to relate macroinvertebrate community composition and habitat characteristics. The results of the analysis suggest that the littoral zone of the lakes we studied could be divided into four general habitats. The first is the wave wash zone characterised by coarse substrates and macroinvertebrate taxa usually associated with lotic environments, such as Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera. The second habitat is associated with macrophytes and is limited at the top by wave action and at depth by light attenuation. In this zone, the snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum is dominant, along with Trichoptera and Odonata. At the base of the macrophytes is the detrital habitat characterised by fine, organic rich sediments and dominated by chironomids, oligochaetes and Trichoptera. At depths below the macrophyte zone, fine sediments are found, and bivalves such as the freshwater mussel Hyridella menziesi are common. While macroinvertebrate abundance can be highly variable, some general predictions of community structure can be made based on a few key environmental factors. Abundance of snails Odonata and Trichoptera was positively related to macrophyte biomass. Some macroinvertebrate groups such as oligochaetes, chironomids, snails and bivalves were more common in fine substrates, while Ephemeroptera were characteristic of coarse substrates. Detrital biomass was important for most of the macroinvertebrate groups studied showing a positive relationship for oligochaetes and Trichoptera and a negative relationship for Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera. 相似文献

This paper proposes an abstract mathematical frame for describing some features of biological time. The key point is that usual physical (linear) representation of time is insufficient, in our view, for the understanding key phenomena of life, such as rhythms, both physical (circadian, seasonal …) and properly biological (heart beating, respiration, metabolic …). In particular, the role of biological rhythms do not seem to have any counterpart in mathematical formalization of physical clocks, which are based on frequencies along the usual (possibly thermodynamical, thus oriented) time. We then suggest a functional representation of biological time by a 2-dimensional manifold as a mathematical frame for accommodating autonomous biological rhythms. The “visual” representation of rhythms so obtained, in particular heart beatings, will provide, by a few examples, hints towards possible applications of our approach to the understanding of interspecific differences or intraspecific pathologies. The 3-dimensional embedding space, needed for purely mathematical reasons, allows to introduce a suitable extra-dimension for “representation time”, with a cognitive significance. 相似文献

We propose two different approaches to defining variable units of intrinsic time (physiological time units in a strict sense, or PTU). For continuously growing animals, we suggest the use of specific mass growth rates; and for animals that cease to grow at some point, we recommend specific metabolic rates. Longevity of animals in terms of PTU is equal to the total specific rate (per lifetime) of the respective processes. A method is proposed to describe age-related changes in respect of specific metabolic rates of non-growing constant-mass adult birds. Maximum PTU longevity values have been estimated for certain fish species (continuously growing animals), and birds (that cease growth). Estimates of the maximum PTU longevity across both passerine and non-passerine groups differ slightly and are actually estimates of the Rubner constant for birds. 相似文献
