Fluxes of oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus were determined in two areas of the Sacca di Goro lagoon, at a site influenced by the farming of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and a control site. Mussel farming induced intense biodeposition of organic matter to the underlying sediments, which stimulated sediment oxygen demand, and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus regeneration rates compared to the nearby control station. Overall benthic fluxes (–11.4 ± 6.5 mmol O2 m−2 h−1; 1.59 ± 0.47 mmol NH4+ m−2 h−1 and 94 ± 42 μmol PO43− m−2 h−1) at the mussel farm are amongst the highest ever recorded for an aquaculture impacted area and question the belief that farming of filter-feeding bivalves has inherently lower impacts than finfish farming. In situ incubations of intact mussel ropes demonstrated that the mussel rope community was an enormous sink for oxygen and particulate organic matter, and an equally large source of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate to the water column. Overall, a one meter square area of␣mussel farm (mussel ropes and underlying sediment) was estimated to have an oxygen demand of 46.8 mmol m2 h−1 and to regenerate inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus at rates of 8.5 and 0.3 mmol m2 h−1, with the mussel ropes accounting for between 70 and more than 90% of the overall oxygen and nutrient fluxes. Even taking into account that within the farmed area of the Sacca di Goro lagoon, there are 15–20 m−2 of open water for each one covered with mussel ropes, the mussel ropes would account for a large and often dominant part of overall oxygen and nutrient fluxes. These results demonstrate that it is essential to take into account the activity of the cultivated organisms and their epiphytic community when assessing the impacts of shellfish farming. Overall, whilst grazing by the mussel rope community could act as a top-down control on the phytoplankton, most of the ingested organic matter is rapidly recycled to the water column as inorganic nutrients, which would be expected to stimulate phytoplankton growth. Consequently, the net effect of the mussel farming on phytoplankton dynamics, may be to increase phytoplankton turnover and overall production, rather than to limit phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

This study examined factors affecting juvenile recruitment in the tuatua Paphies donacinaon an exposed surf beach in Pegasus Bay, South Island New Zealand between October 1994 and April 1997. Tuatua recruitment followed female gonad maturation with a delay of approximately 2 months. Juveniles (1–10 mm shell length) occurred throughout the study except during June and July 1995 (winter). Average densities (m–2 ) were 28 in winter, 230 in spring, 174 in summer and 108 in autumn. There was high juvenile mortality and/or emigration and the maximum average density of (741m–2 ) was recorded in November 1996. Recruit densities were similar between years except during winter. Adult tuatua populations were dominated by modal shell lengths greater than 70 mm.There was no significant relationship between adult and juvenile recruit length. Recruit length decreased with recruit density suggesting density dependent competition for space or food resources. Juvenile density increased following increases in food availability (chlorophyll a concentration) but average length of juveniles did not correlate directly with any of the environmental variables. Recruit density decreased as the modal adult length increased and recruit length reduced when adult populations had a high condition index. Because larvae, juveniles and adult are mobile the beach population is characteristic of an open system with adults and juveniles from the resident population affecting post-settlement density- dependent processes.  相似文献

The introduced population of Gambusia holbrooki from the rice fields of the lower Mondego River Valley, Portugal, was studied for 15 months, relating their life cycle and population dynamics with its production, in order to assess the role of the species in the energy flow and secondary production in this type of agro-ecosystem. Two main annual cohorts (1995 and 1996 cohorts) were identified. The females outnumbered males and the average female/male-ratio was 4. The inspection of ovary developmental stages of this viviparous fish, revealed that the most important reproductive period was between April and August. The first recruits were recorded in June and were present thereafter until October. Males from the parental cohort died before August, whereas parental females could survive until October. Mean adjusted fecundity (number of embryos divided by female standard length) peaked in July 1996 (0.95) and in June 1997 (1.05). Females reached greater sizes, had a higher growth rate and lived longer than males. Annual production was estimated at 3.101 g.m–2.year–1 (ash-free dry weight, AFDW), the average biomass at 2.896 g.m–2 (AFDW), and the P/B ratio was 1.071. A conjugation of life history, population dynamics, production and ecological traits (e.g. fast growth, reduced longevity, viviparity, high productivity, an intermediate position in food chain, and no special habitat requirements for reproduction) clearly show that the populations of G. holbrooki, introduced into rice fields all over the world, may play an important role in the structure and functioning of the biological communities of these important agro-ecosystems.  相似文献

Summary We assessed the feeding biology of veliger larvae of the introduced zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha Pallas) in laboratory experiments using inert microspheres as food analogues. Mean clearance rate on 2.87-m beads ranged between 247 and 420 L veliger–1 day–1. Clearance rate was unrelated to bead concentration up to 100 beads L–1, but was positively correlated with veliger shell length. Clearance rates of Dreissena veligers are within the range of those reported for marine bivalve veligers of similar size and for herbivorous Great Lakes microzooplankton, but are orders of magnitude lower than those of settled, conspecific adults. The impact of settled zebra mussel grazing activities on phytoplankton stocks may be up to 1162 times greater than that exerted by veliger populations in western Lake Erie. Based on 1990 size-frequency distributions and associated literature-derived clearance rates, reef-associated Dreissena populations in western Lake Erie (mean depth 7 m) possess a tremendous potential to filter the water column (up to 132 m3 m–2 day–1) and redirect energy from pelagic to benthic foodwebs. Preliminary analyses indicate that chlorophyll a concentration is strongly depleted (<1 g L–1) above Dreissena beds in western Lake Erie.  相似文献

The productivity and ecological role of benthos in man-made Lake Kariba was assessed through the use of P/B-ratios and by measuring the metabolism (respiration, N and P excretion) of the most abundant mussel species (Aspatharia wahlbergi, Corbicula africana and Caelatura mossambicensis) in laboratory experiments. For A. wahlbergi also filtration rate was estimated. The annual production of benthos for the populated 0–12 m interval was estimated at 11.0 g m –2 yr–1 (shellfree dry weight) of which mussels contributed for 8.81 g (80%), snails 2.16 g (20%) and insects 0.03 g (0.3%) respectively. The most important mussel species in the lake were Caelatura mossambicensis (4.97 g m–2 yr–1) and Corbicula africana (3.33 g). The dominant snail species was Melanoides tuberculata (1.63 g). For the total lake, also including deeper unpopulated bottoms, the annual production of benthos was 2.70 g m–2 yr–1 (shell-free dry weight).Respiration and excretion varied with temperature displaying a bell-shaped relationship. Metabolic rates in Aspatharia wahlbergi increased about 5× between 16.5 °C and the maximum at 34.0 °C and then decreased again at 39.0 °C, when the mussels showed signs of severe stress. Metabolism in Corbicula africana had a lower optimum with fairly constant activity between 18.6 and 29.2 °C, rapidly decreasing above this temperature. The average respiration, nutrient excretion and water filtration rates for mussels in Lake Kariba at 25.2 °C were estimated to about 0.6 mg O2 85 µg NH4–N, 1.5 µg PO4–P and 0.51 water filtered h–1 g–1 shellfree dry weight. This gives that a volume corresponding to about the total epilimnion of the lake is filtered by the mussels annually. Further, mussels can be estimated to remineralise % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGak0Jf9crFfpeea0xh9v8qiW7rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGaaGymaiaac+% cacaaI0aaaaa!3A2B!\[1/4\] of the total load of phosphate, and 8 times the total load of nitrogen every year. The population needs 3.5 × 104 tons of organic carbon for its maintainance, which indicates that about 5% of the annual phytoplankton production is channeled through mussels. We conclude that the mussels, rather than being an important food source for fish, seem to play a large role in the nutrient dynamics of Lake Kariba.  相似文献

Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) Ag.frond elongation rates were measured during autumn-winter, spring and summer in a shallow water (7.5 m depth) kelp bed in Bahía Papalote, northern Baja California. Frond elongation was maximum during spring and minimum during winter. Frond growth was significantly correlated with solar radiation, and was highest in the smallest size fronds (0–2 m). Average frond elongation rate varied between 0.3–11% d–1 during the study period. The relationship between average frond length and elongation rate followed an exponential curve with a negative slope during autumn-winter and summer, but was best described by a straight line during spring. Standard growth rates were obtained by a graphic method. Standard growth rates had intermediate values between those reported for southern California and southern Baja California.M. pyrifera growth cycle shows a different trend from what has been previously reported.  相似文献

On the extensive sedimentary tidal flats of the Wadden Sea, beds of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis represent the only major hard substratum and attachment surface for sessile organisms. On this substratum, the barnacle Semibalanus balanoides is the most frequent epibiont. In summer 1998, it occurred on over 90% of the large mussels (>45 mm shell length) and the dry weight of barnacles reached 65% of mussel dry weight. However, the extent of barnacle overgrowth is not constant and differs widely between years. Periwinkles (Littorina littorea) may reach densities >2000 m–2 on intertidal mussel beds. Field experiments were conducted to test the effect of periwinkle grazing on barnacle densities. An experimental reduction of grazing and bulldozing pressure by periwinkles resulted in increased recruitment of barnacles, while barnacle numbers decreased with increasing snail density. The highest numbers of barnacles survived in the absence of L. littorea. However, a lack of periwinkle grazing activity also facilitated settlement of ephemeral algae which settled later in the year. Field experiments showed that the growth rate of barnacles decreased in the presence of these ephemeral algae. Thus, L. littorea may reduce initial barnacle settlement, but later may indirectly increase barnacle growth rate by reducing ephemeral algae. It is suggested that periwinkle density may be a key factor in the population dynamics of S. balanoides on intertidal mussel beds in the Wadden Sea.  相似文献

During a study of a pumped storage system from May 1979–June 1980 the profundal macrobenthos of the upper reservoir (Lago di S. Maria Valvestino) was sampled at a fixed station and the population of the tubificid Tubifex tubifex studied in detail. Eggs, embryos and the individuals living in an extra-cocoon stage were counted and individually weighed from monthly samples, according to the methods described in Bonomi & Di Cola (1980). Numerical recruitment during the study period was estimated as 257 000 ind m–2 yr–1; of which 110 000 died either as eggs or as embryos, i.e. inside the cocoons, and a further 128 000 died before they attained sexual maturation. The data seem to confirm the typical demographic strategy of T. tubifex i.e. high fecundity and high mortality in the early life stages. The total annual production of the species was estimated at 91.7 g (w.w.) m–2. The low P/B ratio (2.0 yr–1) is considered to be mainly due to high population densities.  相似文献

A field experiment was carried out in October 1998 during active upwelling in a coastal area off the Mejillones Peninsula (23° S). Zooplankton was sampled at day and night, during two subsequent days at 4 stations inside and outside of the upwelling plume. Three depth strata were sampled: 0–20 m, 20–80 m and 80–200 m. Oceanographic data were obtained in a grid of 23 stations using a CTDO, a fluorometer and a Doppler current meter. Calanus chilensis was mostly represented by late stages, i.e. copepodid C5 and adult males and females. There were no day/night effects on vertical distribution, and abundance was significantly higher inside the upwelling plume in the upper 20-m layer at nearly 14 ind. m–3, compared to ca. 5 ind. m–3 outside the upwelling plume. Temperature at 10 m depth and biomass, estimated from stage numbers and their mean dry weights, were used to estimate growth and daily production of Calanus at temperature-dependent rates. The potential loss of biomass from the upwelling center because of advection in the upwelling plume was estimated from current data in the Ekman layer and biomass density. The mean cross-shelf component of the current was estimated at 10.4 km d–1 within the upwelling plume. This yielded a loss of biomass of 9.7 mg dry weight m–2 . Production, estimated by a temperature-dependent approach, ranged between 44 and 35 mg dry weight m–2 d–1, at mean temperatures of 14.6 °C and 15.8 °C inside and outside of the upwelling plume respectively. Within the plume, as much as 22% of daily production may be advected offshore. However, a higher concentration of biomass in the upwelling plume allowed a greater production compared to surrounding areas. A mass balance approach suggests that advective losses may not have a major impact on the C. chilensis population, because of very high daily production at temperature-dependent rates.  相似文献

The life cycle and production of Tinodes waeneri (L.) was examined at five shallow littoral localities in Lake Esrom, Denmark, during 1979/80. Five larval instars were demonstrated. The differences in temporal composition of instars indicated three different life cycles. A bivoltine strategy was shown for the most exposed locality which also had the highest average abundance equal to 11 500 ind. m–2. A univoltine population was found in the more sheltered NW part of the lake with an average density of 1 500 ind. m–2. At the three remaining stations the life cycles were partly bivoltine with wintering populations of mixed cohorts and densities between 10 500 and 3 000 ind. m–3. Two distinct flight periods with maxima in June and August were demonstrated for bi- and partly bivoltine populations. Differences in rates of growth and elimination added to the variability in life cycle. Growth rates peaked in August (5.0–7.4% d–1) at an average temperature of 20°C. Estimates of production ranged from 1.9 to 17.5 g AFDW m–2 a–1 with an average of 8.0 g AFDW m–2. The P/B ratios, which were within the expected range for uni- and bivoltine populations of trichopterans, were 5.73 for the bivoltine population and 3.31 for the univoltine population.Estimates of consumption revealed that the populations could be sustained by autochthonous epilithic production in the habitats. Variability in the quality and seasonal availability of food were judged to influence the type of life cycle.Lake Esrom Littoral Research Publ. No. 8. Growth rates of the entire phytoplankton community of a brackish lagoon in northeastern Japan were estimated by measuring increasing chlorophyll a content in dialysis bags during the summer and early autumn of 1986. The chlorophyll a contents of lagoon water fluctuated between 20 and 200 mg m–3. At lower densities of phytoplankton (20–50 mg chl. a m–3), growth rates (the rate of increase of chlorophyll a) exceeded 1 turnover per day, while at higher densities (more than 50 mg chl. a m–3), the growth rate decreased rapidly. Tidal exchanges of chlorophyll a showed net exports of chlorophyll a from the lagoon to adjacent waters. The exchange rate of chlorophyll a was estimated to be 0.65 d–1. At about 140 mg m–3 of chlorophyll a concentration, the increase of chlorophyll in the lagoon water compensated for tidal export. Only a small proportion of primary production was consumed by zooplankton in the lagoon. There were also net exports of ammonium and phosphate from the lagoon. Nutrient flux from sediment exceeded the phytoplankton requirement and was the major source of the ammonium and phosphate exports from the lagoon. The low inorganic N/P atom supply ratio in the lagoon suggests that nitrogen is a major nutrient limiting phytoplankton growth.  相似文献

The red tide dinoflagellate Karenia brevis (Davis) G. Hansen and Moestrup is noted for causing mass mortalities of marine organisms in the Gulf of Mexico. Most research has focused on culture isolates from the eastern Gulf of Mexico. In this investigation, we examine the effects of light, temperature and salinity on the growth rate of K. brevis from the western Gulf of Mexico. Growth rates of K. brevis were determined under various combinations of irradiance (19, 31, 52, 67, and 123 μmol m−2 s−1), salinity (25, 30, 35, 40 and 45), and temperature (15, 20, 25, and 30 °C). Maximum growth rates varied from 0.17 to 0.36 div day−1 with exponential growth rates increasing with increasing irradiance. Little or no growth was supported at 19 μmol photons m−2 s−1 for any experiment. Maximum growth rates at 15 °C were much lower than at other temperatures. Maximum growth rates of the Texas clone (SP3) fell within the range of Florida clones reported in the literature (0.17–0.36 div day−1 versus 0.2–1.0 div day−1). The Texas clone SP3 had a very similar light saturation point compared to that of a Florida isolate (Wilson's clone) (67 μmol m−2 s−1 versus 65 μmol m−2 s−1), and light compensation (20–30 μmol m−2 s−11). The upper and lower salinity tolerance of the Texas clone was similar than that of some Florida clones (45 versus 46 and 25 versus 22.5, respectively). In our study, the Texas clone had the same temperature tolerance reported for Florida clones (15–30 °C). While individual clones can vary considerably in maximum growth rates, our results indicate only minor differences exist between the Texas and Florida strains of K. brevis in their temperature and salinity tolerance for growth. While the literature notes lower salinity occurrences of K. brevis in nearby Louisiana, our isolate from the southern Texas coast has the higher salinity requirements typical of K. brevis in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

Production rates of the calanoid copepod Eurytemora affinis were estimated from field studies in the Elbe estuary and from an enclosure experiment. As one basic parameter of production rates, the body length, was compared between both investigations. Most of the copepodid stages in the enclosure experiment reached a significant greater length than the copepodids in the estuary. The differences in length between copepods from the field and the experiment could mainly be explained by a four times higher chlorophyll-a level in the enclosure experiment. The better food supply also results in a higher individual growth rate for all instars in the enclosure experiment. Therefore the population of Eurytemora affinis in the Elbe estuary was regarded as food limited during certain times of the year, especially in late spring and summer.Maximum daily production rate in the enclosure experiment (40 µg dw l–1 d–1) was four times higher than in the estuary (12 µg dw l–1 d–1). The mean daily P:B ratio in the enclosure was 0.301 d–1 compared to 0.11 d–1 in the estuary.  相似文献

Brown trout (Salmo trutta) population of a remote high mountain lake (Lake Redó, Pyrenees, 2240 m above sea level) were studied during autumn using hydroacoustic techniques. This acoustic technique was for the first time used on fish at such high altitude in Spain. Sampling using multimesh nets fish catches and echosounding recording were carried out in September 1998. Mean density of fish was estimated to be 1.82 fish per 1000 m3 (597 fish ha–1). The results exhibited mainly a littoral habitat, with the brown trout being preferentially in the 10–25 m deep layer, where the water was warmer and the richness and diversity of macroinvertebrates higher. The sampling by hydroacoustic technique found a length frequency range of fish higher than the multimesh gill nets but both of them estimated similar fish proportion for the common length range. The more frequent target strength (TS) for the population was –38 dB (TS range –37 to –39 dB). Good correlation was found between TS frequency distribution obtained by echosounding and that predicted by means of a model based on the log of the fish total length from multimesh gill nets captures.  相似文献

The effects of a population of the boring gastropod Natica tectaon the bivalve Choromytilus meridionalis were investigated atBailey's Cottage, False Bay, South Africa. In July 1979 theN. tecta density on the mussel bed averaged 69 m–2 andthe population consisted mainly of reproductively mature individualsbetween 20–33 mm shell width. Laboratory experiments on N. tecta showed that prey size selectionis an increasing function of predator size. The prey size rangetaken by large N. tecta is also greater than that taken by smallindividuals. The position of the borehole on the mussel shellis a function of the way in which the shell is held by the footduring the boring process. Consumption rates measured in thelaboratory showed an increase from approximately 1 kJ per weekin 18 mm N. tecta to 4.5 kJ per week in 28 mm individuals. Populationconsumption in the field was calculated as 663 kJ m–2month–1. It was estimated that at this rate the standingcrop of mussels in the pool would be eliminated within 10 months.Field measurements showed significant depletion after 6 months. New spat settlement of mussels occur every 4–6 years. The growth curve shows that after one year the population meansize exceeds 30 mm shell length, which is beyond the prey selectionsize range of small N. tecta. It was concluded that at the timeof a new mussel settlement a niche is provided for the simultaneoussettlement and growth of juvenile N. tecta in high densities. However, within one year the increase in prey size, togetherwith depletion due to over-exploitation, limits population growthand density in N. tecta. The life cycle and annual production of Hydrobia acuta was studied in a hypersaline lagoon (s = 39 in summer), forming a part of solar salt works. Quantitative random samples were taken at regular intervals over a period of 15 months using a corer, and snails collected were counted and measured. Weight and biomass was calculated from a length-weight relationship and from measurements of ash content. H. acuta was a strictly annual species in the study lagoon. Recruitment takes place over a brief period in May and June, after which the breeding population dies. Growth of the new generation was slow during summer, probably due to the unfavourably high salinity. A period of rapid growth took place in autumn coinciding with a drop in salinity caused by rainfall. In winter Hydrobia hibernated by burrowing deeply into the sediment. Growth recommenced in spring when the lagoon was reflooded, but by this time the number of survivors was low.The maximum density of snails was 6 000 m–2 and maximum biomass 500 mg organic dry wt · m–2. Annual cohort production was estimated as 786 mg organic dry wt · m–2 · a–1. These figures are low compared to other studies on hydrobiid snails, and for production in inland waters, but the value for annual P/B = 4.5 is typical for a univoltine species. The relevance of the results to foraging by wading birds (the main consumers), is discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis Sagittal otoliths from 50 king mackerel 2.9–13.0 mm SL and 72 Spanish mackerel 2.8–22.0 mm SL collected off the southeast U.S. were examined whole at 400 × using a compound microscope-video system. Otoliths of both species had visible, presumably daily, growth increments as well as finer subdaily increments. Otolith growth was directly proportional to growth in standard length for king (r2 = 0.91) and Spanish mackerel (r2 = 0.86). Spanish mackerel were estimated to be 3–15 d old with a mean absolute growth rate (SL/number of growth increments) and 95% confidence interval of 1.15 ± 0.07 mm · d–1. The least squares linear equation: SL = –1.30 + 1.31 (age in days), with r2 = 0.67 and p < 0.001, described the relationship between length and age. There was a significant positive relationship between absolute growth rate and fish length. King mackerel were estimated to be 3–15 d old with a mean absolute growth rate of 0.89 ± 0.06 mm d–1. The least squares linear equation: SL = 0.37 + 0.82 (age in days), with r2 = 0.77 and p < 0.001, best described the relationship between length and age. The relationship between growth rate and fish length was not significant. The growth rate of king mackerel was slightly higher for fish from the Mississippi River plume than from all other locations combined, while Spanish mackerel growth rates were not significantly different.  相似文献

Two set of isolates were obtained in an isolation/selection programme to select eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and/or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) rich strains ofIsochrysis galbana. EPA content was improved up to an average of 5.3% (d.wt) for the second set of isolates. On the other hand, with the aeration rate, pH and irradiance kept at low levels, the growth rate was slow and EPA synthesis was enhanced, but productivity increased when growth rates were maximum. A model relating steady-state dilution rates in chemostat cultures ofI. galbana to internal average irradiance is proposed. The greatest productivities were obtained between 0.0295 h–1 and 0.0355 h–1 with 300 mg m–3 h–1 for EPA and 130 mg m–3 h–1 for DHA.  相似文献

Monthly samples of Abra ovata were collected during February 1983-January 1984 in the Evros Delta (N. Aegean Sea). Population density (mean annual value = 2407.5 ind · m−2) was characterized by seasonal variation. An analysis of the length frequency distributions shows that one annual recruitment of juveniles (> 2 mm) occurred in October-January; and also that, throughout the year, two age groups existed in the population. One growth ring was formed on the shells of the oldest age group during July-August. Mean growth in shell length can be described by Bertalanffy function. A positive correlation existed between shell length and decalcified dry weight. Secondary production in A. ovata, calculated by the instantaneous growth method, showed a mean biomass of 29.221 g dry weight m−2yr−1, a productivity of 17.086 g dry weight m−2yr−1 and an annual turnover ratio of 0.59.  相似文献

Lithothamnion corallioides Crouan et Crouan (Rhodophyta, Corallinales) is the main constituent of the maerl beds of the Bay of Brest (Atlantic coast of western Brittany). Its growth rate was measured monthly in situ during one year. Growth rates were obtained by an adaptation of the buoyant weight technique. The highest daily growth rate was observed in July and reached 0.26 % d–1 (S.D. = 0.06), when expressed as the increase of calcium carbonate weight. The average daily growth rate was 0.12% d–1 (S.D. = 0.04) for a period of 275 days (summer and autumn 1988, winter 1989). Using this preliminary data, the calcium carbonate accretion rate can be estimated provisionally: 876 g m–2 year–1, a rate much lower than that of tropical reef coralline algae, but higher than that of Lithophyllum incrustans, the well known temperate European reef-builder.  相似文献
