The distribution of spores and pollen grains was studied in nine sections of bottom sediments up to 50 m thick, in the southern Barents Sea. The Early Cretaceous, Pleistocene, and Holocene ages of the enclosing sediments are determined by palynological analysis. Three Holocene provinces were recognized and traced along the beds, which were formed in the Early, Middle, and Late Holocene according to the scheme of Neishtadt (1957).  相似文献

Luminescence dating of sediments has not been used extensively for dating Middle Stone Age deposits in South Africa, despite its potential for contributing to a poorly dated record. Such deposits at Die Kelders cave, on the southern South African coast, consist of narrow bands of occupation debris separated by thicker layers of aeolian sands containing much less evidence of occupation. Homogeneous, aeolian sediments are usually considered ideal for luminescence dating. Here we report luminescence analyses of five samples from these sands that demonstrate sufficient bleaching prior to burial to validate dating and that yield ages of about 60-70 ka, in agreement with other evidence from sedimentology, archaeology and electron spin resonance. Lack of significant differences in the ages suggests the deposits accumulated fairly rapidly during the early part of the Last Glaciation.  相似文献

Abstract A discontinuous record of vegetation over the past 7500 years was obtained through pollen analysis of pond sediments from an extensive treeless plain on the relatively dry Central Plateau of Tasmania. The results demonstrate continuity of treeless conditions, which probably persisted from the Pleistocene throughout the Holocene, up to the present day. Some changes to the structure of the grassland were observed, especially over the past 200 years. Analysis of carbonized particles showed that fires had been infrequent over the period examined. It seems that this area, close to the altitudinal tree limit, has remained a natural grassland, and the hypothesis of Jackson (1973), that unreliable summer conditions may be a major factor in maintaining open conditions, is supported. Parts of the Central Plateau may thus preserve plant communities with some of the floristic elements and structure of widespread Bassian grasslands of the Late Pleistocene.  相似文献

Here we present a revision of the fossil record of chitons (Mollusca, Polyplacophora) of Late Pleistocene and Holocene marine deposits of Uruguay and discuss their potential for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. Chitons were recorded as isolated valves in bivalve- and gastropod-rich assemblages. They are represented by the species Chaetopleura angulata (Spengler), C. isabellei (d’Orbigny), C. asperrima (Gould) and Ischnochiton striolatus (Gray). The last two species are recorded for the first time as fossils not only in Uruguay but also in South America. Exclusively recorded for the Late Pleistocene is the warm water species I. striolatus, whose current southern range limit is located in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Higher temperatures than at present are inferred for the Uruguayan coast during the Late Pleistocene, probably driven by the southward influence of the warm Brazilian Current along the eastern margin of South America. Chitons from Holocene deposits show a wider geographic distribution along the Uruguayan coast in comparison to current distributions. They are recorded where an estuarine and eurihaline fauna lives today, which suggests the former existence of marine conditions. This is explained by the westward displacement of the marine front in the Uruguayan coast during the Holocene transgressive events. Chitons have proven to be useful palaeoenvironmental proxies for the reconstruction of salinity and temperature trends in the Uruguayan coast during the climatic oscillations of the Late Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. As such, their patterns of distribution are related to the recent physical evolution of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

Late Pleistocene and Holocene deer remains from Ecuadorian sites have been analysed. Most of the material belongs to Odocoileus virginianus ustus, which is documented in latest Pleistocene deposits, in the Interandean Depression. Coastal sediments referred to the Holocene bear remains of Odocoileus salinae. O. v. ustus and O. salinae differ in size and in the morphology of the antlers and of the dentitions. In the present work, O. salinae is postulated to have derived from O. v. ustus during an arid climatic phase in the latest Pleistocene.  相似文献

The Holocene sedimentary record of Sabkha Boujmel (SE Tunisia) is expressed by a shallowing-upward carbonate lagoon-tidal flat cycle (2.3 m thick) unconformably overlying continental silt-sandy sediment, Late Würmian in age. The sedimentary package of this cycle starts with transgressive marginal shallow marine (intertidal to subtidal) bioclastic sands grading upwards to black mudstone, rich in organic matter (T.O.C. up to 1.3%) deposited within a lagoon protected from the sea by Upper Pleistocene lithified sand spits. The uppermost part of the cycle is represented by oobioclastic carbonate sands covered with dead biodegraded microbial mats and/or reddish sands of aeolian origin deposited in intertidal to supratidal environments. The facies arrangement, particularly the spatial distribution of the ancient and the more recent microbial mats, records the progressive infilling of the lagoon as well as the progradation of the shoreline during the last 2000 years. The organic-rich facies which provide an age varying between 4130 and 6800 yr B.P. were deposited when the Boujmel lagoon started to be progressively separated from the Mediterranean Sea.The main factors controlling the facies and the thickness variation are the local topographic sea-floor irregularities most likely controlled by the inheritance morphology resulting from an important fluviatile digging that occurred during the last glacial maximum, the relative sea-level fluctuations, the hydro-isostatic rebound and the climate.  相似文献

Eolian deposits and landforms are ubiquitous in western Kansas, particularly south of the Arkansas River with the presence of a stabilized dune field. Stratigraphic studies and associated optical dating reveal a complex depositional history for this dune field spanning the late Quaternary. The oldest eolian deposits from ca. 16 to 12 ka completely or partially bury high terraces with ages of ca. 16 and 33 ka. It is unknown whether these eolian deposits reflect regional aridity and/or a change in sediment availability with the transition of the Arkansas River from a single channel to a braided system. There is pervasive evidence for episodic eolian erosion and deposition ca. 9.8 to 6.3 ka, generally coincident with loess deposition on upland surfaces [Olson, C.G., Nettleton, W.D., Porter, D.A., Brasher, B.R., 1997. Middle Holocene aeolian activity on the High Plains of west-central Kansas. Holocene, 7(3): 255–261], and thus it is inferred to reflect regional aridity. Sites within the dune field show a sequence of eolian sands and weak buried soils, reflecting either dune migration or sand sheet accretion at ca. 1490, 430, 380–320, 180, and 70 yr ago, which correspond well with continental-scale droughts in the tree-ring record. Eolian sand in the Arkansas River dune field may be derived principally with variability in fluvial activity and in climate during the late Pleistocene to the middle Holocene, with substantial reactivation of eolian systems during decadal-scale drought variability in the past 2000 yr.  相似文献

A review of Late Quaternary palaeoclimatic data derived from several pollen sequences, between ca. 22 and 34°S in Southern Africa, shows a degree of similarity in temperature and moisture variations between the various site. Pollen data from sites such as Wonderkrater and Rietvlei (Transvaal), Tate Vondo (Venda), Elim (Orange Free State), Equus Cave (Southern Kalahari) and Boomplaas (Cape Province) suggest relative dryness during the Last Glacial Maximum, wet conditions during the Late Glacial, and dry conditions during the Early Holocene ca. 8000 yr B.P., followed by progressively moister conditions peaking soon after the development of a temperature optimum ca. 6500 yr. B.P. Problems with radiocarbon dating of polleniferous spring deposits, however, prevent precise correlations of especially Late Pleistocene sequences. Different seasonal patterns in the Late Glacial and Early Holocene may explain palaeobotanical data and are partly compatible with simulations of past climates of Kutzbach and Guetter (1986).  相似文献

Meco, J., Muhs, D.R., Fontugne, M., Ramos, A.J.G., Lomoschitz, A. & Patterson, D. 2010: Late Pliocene and Quaternary Eurasian locust infestations in the Canary Archipelago. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 440–454. The Canary Archipelago has long been a sensitive location to record climate changes of the past. Interbedded with its basalt lavas are marine deposits from the principal Pleistocene interglacials, as well as aeolian sands with intercalated palaeosols. The palaeosols contain African dust and innumerable relict egg pods of a temperate‐region locust (cf. Dociostaurus maroccanus Thunberg 1815 ). New ecological and stratigraphical information reveals the geological history of locust plagues (or infestations) and their palaeoclimatic significance. Here, we show that the first arrival of the plagues to the Canary Islands from Africa took place near the end of the Pliocene, ca. 3 Ma, and reappeared with immense strength during the middle Late Pleistocene preceding MIS (marine isotope stage) 11 (ca. 420 ka), MIS 5.5 (ca. 125 ka) and probably during other warm interglacials of the late Middle Pleistocene and the Late Pleistocene. During the Early Holocene, locust plagues may have coincided with a brief cool period in the current interglacial. Climatically, locust plagues on the Canaries are a link in the chain of full‐glacial arid–cold climate (calcareous dunes), early interglacial arid–sub‐humid climate (African dust inputs and locust plagues), peak interglacial warm–humid climate (marine deposits with Senegalese fauna), transitional arid–temperate climate (pedogenic calcretes), and again full‐glacial arid–cold climate (calcareous dunes) oscillations. During the principal interglacials of the Pleistocene, the Canary Islands recorded the migrations of warm Senegalese marine faunas to the north, crossing latitudes in the Euro‐African Atlantic. However, this northward marine faunal migration was preceded in the terrestrial realm by interglacial infestations of locusts. □Locust plagues, Canary Islands, Late Pliocene, Pleistocene, Holocene, palaeoclimatology.  相似文献

The present paper illustrates the stratigraphic results of a transponder-navigated coring program carried out in 1978 on the southern Calabrian Ridge (Cobblestone Area 4) and western Mediterranean Ridge (Cobblestone Area 3).Semi-quantitative investigations of over 600 foraminiferal samples and 450 nannofossil slides from forty cores, with a total recovery of 333 m, comprise the data base of the study. Most of the sediments recovered are Late Pleistocene or Holocene in age. The high-resolution nannofossil biostratigraphic scheme recently proposed for the Quaternary, coupled with sapropel stratigraphy and with tephrachronology resulted in precise correlation of the cores.Mid-Pleistocene sediments were recovered in a single core from Area 4, and in one core from Area 3, both located on basin walls. Four cores from basin walls in Area 4 yielded Pliocene sediments. No sediments older than approximately 3 m.y. (foraminiferal Zone M Pl 4, Reticulofenestra pseudoumbilica nannofossil Zone) are exposed on the explored walls from the southern Calabrian Ridge. Early and Late Pliocene sediments were recovered from the walls of the deepest crater-like basin explored in Area 3, but only in dredges. In this latter area also two peculiar lithologies were cored, basically unfossiliferous, but thought to be pre-Pliocene in age: a mud breccia whose clasts yield a sparse assemblage of mid-Cretaceous planktonic foraminifera, and a dolomitic mudstone, which is attributed to the Late Messinian on the basis of correlation with a similar lithology cored at DSDP Site 374, and substantiated by analogy in X-ray controlled mineralogical composition. The fairly complete record of Late Pleistocene and Holocene sapropels recovered in the southern Calabrian Ridge discards the hypothesis that the southern part of the Ionian Sea did not undergo stagnant cycles during the ice ages.Another hypothesis relating the origin of Cobblestone topography to olistostromes is also considered untenable on the basis of the new data. The large number of cores, precisely located on a previously mapped, highly irregular bottom physiography, disproves that large-scale chaotic sedimentation occurred: debris flows recorded in base-of-slope cores document local slope failures.  相似文献

Summary Two major lake periods were discovered in the sand sea of An Nafud and the surrounding areas. In Upper Pleistocene large lakes occurred around the dune area and in the interior of the sand sea. Their deposits were formed between 34 000 and 24 000 BP. The lakes were not conformous to the present dune relief. They had an extension of several km2 and a depth of ca. 10 m. Holocene lakes (8 400–5 400 BP) were of minor extension and restricted to the interdune depressions. Lake sediments consist of cemented sand, calcareous crusts and diatomites. Upper Pleistocene lakes were fresh water lakes, the Halocene lakes were mostly swamps depending on rising and falling aquifers in the dunes. Plant remains as pollen and macro rests show that the environmental changes didn't exceed the system of semidesert comparable to the modern plant cover. However, the Upper Pleistocene lake deposits contain some more soudanian elements as the Holocene sediments in the pollen spectra. Climatically the lake formations are interpreted as depending on a stronger influence of the mediterranean cyclones or an interaction of them with monsoonal air masses.  相似文献

The three main Lena Delta terraces were formed during different stages of the late Quaternary. While only the first floodplain terrace is connected with active deltaic processes, the second and third terraces, which dominate the western part of the delta, are erosional remnants of arctic paleolandscapes affected by periglacial processes. The landscape dynamics of the second and the third terraces, and their relationship to each other, are of particular importance in any effort to elucidate the late Quaternary paleoenvironment of western Beringia.Multidisciplinary studies of permafrost deposits on the second terrace were carried out at several sites of the Arga Complex, named after the largest delta island, Arga–Muora–Sise. The frozen sediments predominantly consist of fluvial sands several tens of meters thick, radiocarbon-dated from > 52 to 16 kyr BP. These sands were deposited under changing fluvial conditions in a dynamic system of shifting river channels, and have been additionally modified by synsedimentary and postsedimentary cryogenesis. Later thermokarst processes affected this late Pleistocene fluvial landscape during the Lateglacial and the Holocene. In addition, eolian activity reworked the fluvial sands on exposed surfaces at least since the Lateglacial, resulting in dune formation in some areas. Contrary to the Arga Complex, the third terrace is mainly composed of polygenetic alluvial and proluvial ice-rich permafrost sequences (Ice Complex deposits) radiocarbon-dated from 50 to 17 kyr BP which cover older fluvial sand units luminescence-dated to about 100–50 kyr BP. Paleoecological records reflect tundra-steppe conditions that varied locally, depending on landscape dynamics, during the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 4 and 3 periods, and a persistent change to shrub and arctic tundra during Lateglacial and Holocene periods. The study results indicate a continuous fluvial sedimentation environment for the Laptev Sea shelf in the region of the second Lena Delta terrace during the late Pleistocene, and confirm the presence of a dynamic channel system of the paleo-Lena River that flowed at the same time as the nearby subaerial Ice Complex deposits were being formed.  相似文献

The data of the comprehensive study of deposits of dune sand massifs—the Makhatta and Kysyl-Syr Tukulans—in the Vilyui River Basin (Central Yakutia) are given. We have revealed the structure and preliminarily reconstructed the evolution of tukulans in the Vilyui River basin and the environmental conditions of the surrounding area in the Late Pleistocene–Holocene period (the chronological period of the formation of tukulans) on the basis of lithological and palynological data and 17 radiocarbon datings. It has been revealed that the tukulans should be assigned to eolian deposits formed on sediments of complicated facial structure. We have distinguished four stages in the vegetation evolution within the last 40000-year period and three chronostratigraphical phases in the development of dune massifs.  相似文献

Carbonate eolian dunes can form huge sand bodies along the coasts but are seldom described in the pre-Quaternary record. The study of more than 600 thin-sections collected in present-day, Holocene and Pleistocene dunes from Sardinia, Crete, Cyprus, Tunisia, Morocco, Australia and Baja California confirms that these deposits can be easily misinterpreted as shallow marine at core or thin-section scale. The classical eolian criteria (fine-grained and well-sorted sands) are exceptional in carbonate dunes because the diversity of shapes and densities of carbonate particles lowers the critical shear velocity of the sediment thus blurring the sedimentary structures. Wind carbonate deposits are mainly heterogeneous in size and often coarse-grained. The paucity of eolianites in the pre-Quaternary record could be due to misinterpretation of these deposits. The recognition should be based on converging sedimentological and stratigraphic elements at core scale, and diagenetic (vadose diagenesis, pedogenetic imprints) and petrographical (grain verticalization, scarcity of micritic envelopes, broken and/or reworked foraminifera) clues in thin-section. Bioclastic or oolitic grainstones showing evidence of vadose diagenesis or pedogenetic imprints, should always be suspected of having an eolian origin.  相似文献

Aeolian dunes controlled by regional climate have been formed in many coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea during the Quaternary. Generally, they are formed under a landward-blowing wind, and comprise numerous reworked penecontemporaneous shallow-marine carbonate grains. Along the eastern mid-Adriatic Sea, late Pleistocene aeolian and alluvial sands occur as isolated patches in karstic depressions on several islands and the Pelje?ac Peninsula. At most localities, the sands consist of a mixture of mostly carbonate rock fragments and siliciclastic material. A higher proportion of shallow-marine bioclasts was found only at one locality. The terrestrial material was transported to the coastal area by at least two rivers: paleo-Cetina and paleo-Neretva River, and was subsequently reworked and transported by wind, resulting in aeolian deposition. Sandy units of various thicknesses exhibiting sharp erosional bedding planes and cross-bedding are interpreted as representing aeolian dunes and sand sheets controlled by a complex wind regime. The mineralogical composition at almost all localities indicates near-river flood plains as the main sand source. Although the area was affected by strong winds blowing landward and parallel to the coast, they significantly deviated due to the local topography produced by the tectonically deformed and karstified carbonate basement. In this way, the late Pleistocene aeolian deposits on the mid-Adriatic islands differ from deposits from most Quaternary Mediterranean coastal aeolian belts, as they contain very small quantities of penecontemporaneous shallow-marine carbonate grains and were deposited by winds blowing in varying directions instead of prevailing landward-blowing winds.  相似文献

The Channel Country, a region of wide fluvial plains criss-crossed by a reticulate pattern of anastomosing channels, and the adjacent sand dunes and clay pans of the Lake Eyre drainage basin occupy an area of 1.3 × 106 km2 of internal drainage in the arid east-central part of Australia. Beneath a surface of skin of mud, the sediment of the Channel Country is sand and some mud in the floodplain, as well as in levees and channels. The surface mud represents the overbank deposits of meandering channels that are superimposed on sheet sands of a relict braided system. With the other sediments (aeolian sand and lacustrine mud) of the Lake Eyre drainage basin, the Channel Country sediments represent the latest phase of deposition of the Cainozoic Birdsville Basin, which was initiated as an interior basin behind the dismembered rifted arch of the divergent Pacific margin. In their depositional and tectonic setting, the arid sediments of central-eastern Australia are modern analogues of the Mesozoic desert sands and other non-marine sediments that were deposited behind the pre-breakup arch and post-breakup half-arch of South America. The preceding Mesozoic Great Artesian Basin of central-eastern Australia contains volcanogenic sediment and was covered for a short time by an epeiric sea; its deposition was influenced by an uplift along the convergent Pacific margin, and it is analogous to other Gondwana basins in Antarctica, southern Africa, and South America that were yoked to the convergent Pacific margin.  相似文献

Around the western Mediterranean Basin, the ecological status of Populus alba, whether indigenous or introduced, is controversial. This note presents new palaeobotanical data based on analyses of leaf imprints from a travertine formation located in southern France. This travertine presents two levels with Populus alba imprints. The oldest level is dated back by 14C to the Early Holocene, i.e., 8890 +/- 70 BP. This demonstrates that Populus alba is an autochthonous species of the southern-France vegetation, removing speculations reporting that its distribution area was greatly influenced by Roman civilization. Finally, we discuss this new data in regard to other Pleistocene and Holocene deposits circum the Mediterranean Basin and in Europe, where this species was identified.  相似文献

Samples of alluvial and colluvial deposits from the coastal plain and coastal valleys north and south of Cairns (17°S) have been dated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) protocols, with additional thermoluminescence (TL) and Radiocarbon assays. Coarse fanglomerates from elevated coastal terraces date back to 81 ka, but most are clustered in oxygen isotope stage three (OIS3, 64-28 ka), indicating high-energy conditions during this period. Extensive fans and terraces of finer calibre sediments are widely represented grading from coarse gravels and cobbles in proximal zones fine sand and silt in distal areas. Dates show that vertical accumulation of 10-15 m of sediment occurred between ∼ 28 and 14 ka (OIS2), after which the fans were dissected and Holocene deposits become fragmentary. A number of deposits indicating hillslope instability were successfully dated and these fall mainly into OIS3 and post 12 ka. These results are interpreted as catchment responses to Late Pleistocene climate and vegetation changes, documented elsewhere from local pollen and ocean drilling sites. Correlation with these records and with evidence for regional climate change from the Austral-Asian region is good and indicates that these changes were sufficient to transform fluvial activity and slope processes.  相似文献
