We carried out experiments that considered the feeding, phenology, and biocontrol potential of dogbane beetle, Chrysochus auratus, on spreading dogbane, Apocynum androsaemifolium, a native perennial weed in lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium). In no-choice host-feeding experiments, adult beetles did not feed upon common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca), periwinkle (Vinca minor), wild raisin (Viburnum cassenoides), and lowbush blueberry, all plants related to spreading dogbane or found around lowbush blueberry fields. In a field experiment, significant decreases in spreading dogbane total and foliar weight occurred at a density of 16 beetles per ramet, but not at lower beetle densities. In our Nova Scotia (NS) field sites, beetles were present for 8–12 weeks, beginning in late June or early July (225–335 growing degree days, GDD). Beetle abundance peaked at 4–7 beetles/m2 and occurred at 357–577 GDD, which temporally coincides with the incidence of mature spreading dogbane plants in the field. The results suggest that although inundations of C. auratus could cause significant defoliation of spreading dogbane, natural populations of the beetle probably could not satisfactorily suppress development of this weed as a stand-alone control tactic. Conservation and augmentation of C. auratus populations should nonetheless be encouraged in integrated management programs for spreading dogbane.  相似文献

Applications of Metarhizium brunneum Petch (Ascomycota: Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) isolate LRC112 conidia caused high mortality to Agriotes obscurus L. (Coleoptera: Elateridae) click beetles in field trials. Banded conidiated rice (4.4 × 1014 conidia ha?1) and conidia dust (5.0 × 1013 conidia ha?1) resulted in 93.3 % ± 7.3 and 91.3 % ± 3.0 mortality after 18 days, while aqueous conidia suspension spray (5.0 × 1013 conidia ha?1) with and without 80 g ha?1 spinosad resulted in 68.2 % ± 17.7 and 52.6 % ± 17.4 mortality. Differences in results between 2012 and 2013 were attributed to rainfall, with pronounced effects in 2012 (rain beginning 35 h post treatment) and minimal effects in 2013 (rain beginning at 4 h). In another field experiment, beetles dosed with 1.49 × 107 ± 5.08 × 106 conidia per beetle retained 4.6 % of conidia after seven days while conidia viability on beetle bodies remained unchanged. The results inferred opportunities for controlling click beetles using fungal entomopathogens, and for horizontal transmission of the inoculum.  相似文献

Practices that enhance abundance and diversity of generalist predators are often employed with the objective of improving biological control of insect pests. Ground beetles and other predators can prey on blueberry maggot, an important pest of blueberries, when mature larvae pupate in the ground. We conducted mesocosm and field experiments to determine if Pterostichus melanarius, a common predatory ground beetle, lowers maggot numbers in compost mulch or when predator and alternative prey abundances are manipulated. At background (field) densities of alternative prey, increasing densities of P. melanarius did not significantly reduce pest numbers in mesocosms containing compost or soil. When alternative prey were removed from compost, beetles reduced pest numbers by up to 35%. In field experiments, maggot numbers were higher when beetles and other predators were excluded from soil plots, but beetle exclusion had no effect in compost plots where both predator and alternative prey numbers were high. Our results indicate that there can be some reduction of blueberry maggot by P. melanarius and other potential predators when there are few alternative prey. However, despite attracting large numbers of predators compost mulch did not lead to a significant reduction in blueberry maggot; in fact, the high abundance of alternative food associated with compost appeared to interfere with beetle predation on blueberry maggot.  相似文献

We evaluated surface-dwelling Coleoptera with special reference to ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) using pitfall traps across fourteen stands of grasslands invaded and non-invaded by invasive goldenrods (Solidago canadensis L. and S. gigantea Ait.) over a 3 year period. We analysed differences in assemblages of invaded and non-invaded grasslands and tested responses of surface-dwelling beetles and carabids to invasion of goldenrods. We identified 29 Coleoptera families and 91 Carabidae species. Solidago invaded grasslands showed significantly higher activity-abundance of rove and carrion beetles and supported greater diversity and significantly higher evenness of surface-dwelling Coleoptera and the number of sampled families and individuals was higher too. We found lower taxonomic richness and significantly lower activity-abundance of carabids across goldenrods stands. Several less common Carabidae species and significantly higher representation of stenotopic brachypterous habitat specialists were also observed within invaded stands. We confirmed that differences in plant cover connected with invasion of goldenrods, soil moisture and abandonment of invaded habitats are the driving mechanisms of changes in surface-dwelling Coleoptera and ground beetles assemblages composition across Solidago invaded grasslands. Overall, changes of grassland biotopes connected with invasion of goldenrods significantly alter Coleoptera families and Carabidae assemblages, but not necessarily reduce diversity.  相似文献

Economic control of Rhagoletis mendax was achieved by applying insecticidal sprays to commercial lowbush blueberry vegetative fields, in a biennial production system, rather than to the fruiting fields, when the threshold was exceeded. The viability of this integrated pest management of R. mendax for lowbush blueberries was demonstrated over a 9-yr interval in New Brunswick where three sites were monitored for 2 yr, eight sites for 4 yr, and one site for 9 yr. Control of R. mendax in lowbush blueberry fields was achieved in 2 yr when the fields were isolated, and in 3 yr when there were adjacent lowbush blueberry fields.  相似文献

In no-choice tests but not in choice tests, alligatorweed flea beetles,Agasicles hygrophila Selman & Vogt (Col.: Chrysomelidae) exposed to alligatorweed plants grown with two levels of mineral nutrition fed significantly more on those grown in full mineral nutrient than those grown with deficient phosphate. Chemical analysis showed that the full nutrient plants had more ethanol-soluble nitrogen compounds but less total carbohydrate than the phosphate-deficient plants. The response of beetles to phosphate-deficient alligatorweed may thus result from a change in the carbohydrate-nitrogen composition of host plants, though further investigation is needed for confirmation. Flea beetle response was identical to terminal and mature leaf tissue of full nutrient plants.  相似文献

Effects of the antiparasitic drug eprinomectin were studied in the laboratory and field experiments in Hokkaido, Japan, by pour-on administrations (500 μg/kg) on the pest fly Haematobia irritans (Linnaeus), nontarget coprophagous fly Neomyia cornicina (Fabricius), and the dung beetles Caccobius jessoensis Harold and Liatongus minutus (Motschulsky). Eprinomectin excreted into cattle dung was highest at 3 days post-treatment in both experiments, then it declined rapidly at 7 days and was not detected on or after day 14 post-treatment. In laboratory experiments, pupation and emergence rates of H. irritans and N. cornicina were hampered from 1 to 14 days post-treatment. There were no significant differences in the numbers of brood balls constructed by C. jessoensis in dung from treated and control cattle. Adult emergence rates of C. jessoensis were significantly reduced on days 1 and 3 post-treatment in dung from treated cattle. There were no significant differences in the numbers of brood balls constructed by L. minutus in dung from treated and control cattle, but survival rates of larvae were significantly reduced on days 1 and 3 post-treatment. In field experiments, the numbers of brood balls by L. minutus recovered from beneath dung pats were significantly larger in number in dung from treated cattle, suggesting that adult beetles are attracted to dung pats from treated cattle. Survival rates of larvae in these brood balls of L. minutus were significantly reduced 1 day post-treatment in dung pats from treated cattle, and equivalent levels to the control were restored 7 days post-treatment. The results are discussed in relation to the effects of endectocides on nontarget insects in grazing pastures.  相似文献

Epigeic polyphagous predatory beetles can regulate the pest abundance. The range of population densities at which regulation is possible is specific to each predator-prey subsystem and can be determined experimentally. In the subsystem of ground and rove beetles (Carabidae and Staphylinidae) and the cabbage maggot Delia brassicae Bouché and in that of Carabus hampei Küst. and the Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, regulation occurs at low pest densities: in the former subsystem, at oviposition rates not exceeding 3 eggs per day per plant, and in the latter, at the pest density varying from 1 to 36 eggs per potato plant. Within these density ranges, both the absolute and relative number of pest individuals eliminated by the predatory beetles increase. The maximum fraction of the pests destroyed by these entomophages is observed at medium prey population densities, which corresponds to functional response of type III (Holling, 1965).  相似文献

Agricultural intensification may result in important shifts in insect community composition and function, but this remains poorly explored. Studying how groups of species with shared traits respond to local and landscape scale land-use management can reveal mechanisms behind such observed impacts. We tested if ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) divided into trait groups based on body sizes, wing morphologies and dietary preferences respond differently to farming practise (organic and conventional), farming intensity (measured as yield) and landscape complexity (measured as the proportion of arable land within a 1,000 m radius) across Europe. We used data from 143 farms in five regions in northern and central Europe. Organic farms did not differ in abundance or richness of any trait group compared to conventional farms. As farm scale intensity (yield) increased, overall abundance of beetles decreased, but abundances of small and medium sized beetles, as well as that of wingless beetles, were unaffected. Overall species richness was not affected by yield, whereas consideration of traits revealed that phytophagous and omnivorous beetles were less species rich on farms with high yields. Increasing the proportion of arable land in the landscape increased overall beetle abundance. This was driven by an increase in omnivorous beetles. The total species richness was not affected by an increase in the proportion arable land, although the richness of wingless beetles was found to increase. Potential effects on ecosystem functioning need to be taken into account when designing schemes to maintain agricultural biodiversity, because species with different ecological traits respond differently to local management and landscape changes.  相似文献

In phytophagous insects, adult attraction and oviposition preference for a host plant are often positively correlated with their immature fitness; however, little is known how this preference–performance relationship changes within insect populations utilizing different host plants. Here, we investigated differences in the preference and performance of two populations of a native North American frugivorous insect pest, the plum curculio (Conotrachelus nenuphar)—one that utilizes peaches and another that utilizes blueberries as hosts—in the Mid‐Atlantic United States. We collected Cnenuphar adult populations from peach and blueberry farms and found that they exhibited a clear preference for the odors of, as well as an ovipositional preference for, the hosts they were collected from, laying 67%–83% of their eggs in their respective collected hosts. To measure Cnenuphar larval performance, a fitness index was calculated using data on larval weights, development, and survival rate from egg to 4th instars when reared on the parent''s collected and novel hosts. Larvae of Cnenuphar adults collected from peach had high fitness on peach but low fitness when reared on blueberry. In contrast, larvae from Cnenuphar adults collected in blueberry had high fitness regardless of the host on which they were reared. In this study, we show that utilizing a novel host such as blueberry incurs a fitness cost for Cnenuphar from peaches, but this cost was not observed for Cnenuphar from blueberries, indicating that the preference–performance relationship is present in the case of insects reared on peach, but insects reared on blueberry were more flexible and able to utilize either host, despite preferring blueberry.  相似文献

Wildlife as a source of microbial contamination is a food safety concern. Deer feces (scat) have been determined as a point source for Escherichia coli O157:H7 contamination of fresh produce. The ecological role of the scooped scarab (Onthophagus hecate (Panzer)), a generalist dung beetle species common in Maine blueberry fields, was explored as a biological control agent and alternatively as a pathogen vector between deer scat and food.A large-scale field survey of wildlife scat indicated that pathogenic E. coli O157:H7 was present, albeit at a low prevalence (1.9% of samples, n = 318), in the Maine lowbush blueberry agroecosystem. A manipulative field experiment verified that, should contact occur between deer scat and blueberry plants and fruit during the summer, contamination with E. coli O157:H7 can occur and persist for more than 72 h. For both the positive control and an experimental scat inoculation treatment, the levels of the bacterial population decreased over time, but at different rates (treatment x time interaction: F (1.9,18.8) = 358.486, P < 0.0001). The positive control inoculation, which resulted in a higher initial E. coli level on fruit, decayed at a faster rate than inoculation of fruit via scat in the experimental treatment.We conducted 2 laboratory studies to elucidate aspects of dung beetle feeding ecology as it relates to suppression of E. coli O157:H7 from deer scat to lowbush blueberry fruit. In both experiments, dung beetles buried the same amount of scat whether or not the scat was inoculated with the pathogen (F (1,6) = 0.001; P = 0.999 and (F (2,17) = 4.10, P = 0.147). Beetles feeding on E. coli inoculated deer scat were not found to vector the pathogen to fruit. In two studies, beetles lowered the amount of pathogenic E. coli persisting in soils compared to soils without beetles (F (2,9) = 7.757; P = 0.05 and F (2,17) = 8.0621, P = 0.004).Our study suggests that the dung beetle species, Onthophagus hecate, has the potential to contribute to the suppression of E. coli O157:H7 in agricultural landscapes.  相似文献

Blueberries are perennial, vegetatively propagated out-crossing shrubs with great potential of health benefits. In tetraploid blueberry (Vaccinium spp.), genetic analyses have focused more on diversity, whereas genetic structure has been studied less extensively. This study investigated the genetic structure and diversity in 28 wild clones, six cultivars and two selections of lowbush, half-high and highbush blueberries. Summary statistics, structure estimation and clustering by neighbour-joining (NJ), principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and by the analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), using 10 expressed sequence tag-polymerase chain reaction (EST-PCR) and two EST-simple sequence repeat (SSR) primer pairs, were performed to characterize and discriminate the genotypes. A total of 213 markers were detected. Wide genetic diversity was evident from high values of expected heterozygosities, Shannon's index and polymorphism information content, and from AMOVA. Structure analysis subdivided the lowbush blueberries into three distinct groups leaving the half-high and highbush blueberries into one cluster which was in agreement with the NJ clustering and PCoA. Twelve EST-primer pairs efficiently differentiated wild and cultivated blueberries, making this technology valuable for genome mapping and for long-term conservation of blueberry resources for the benefit of germplasm conservation and breeding purposes.  相似文献

Insect pest management in wild blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Aiton) usually involves insecticidal sprays, which may have detrimental effects on non‐target beneficial insects. Dogbane beetle (Chrysochus auratus Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) feeds almost exclusively on spreading dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium L.), an increasing weed problem in wild blueberry production. Because C. auratus is an important natural enemy of spreading dogbane, we assessed its susceptibility to several insecticides it may be exposed to during insect pest management. In laboratory bioassays, we found adult dogbane beetles were highly susceptible to field rates of phosmet (Imidan) and acetamiprid (Assail) by direct topical contact and ingestion of treated foliage, whereas no mortality was seen with spirotetramat (Movento) and chlorantraniliprole (Altacor). Topical applications of spinetoram (Delegate) did not cause significant mortality of beetles, but high mortality to beetles was found when they ingested spinetoram‐treated foliage. The results suggest that while some insecticides used in blueberry management will be hazardous to C. auratus, options are available that will cause little harm to this natural enemy.  相似文献

Trapping and monitoring experiments were conducted in the roof spaces of four buildings infested with deathwatch beetle, Xestobium rufovillosum de Geer (Coleoptera: Anobiidae). Data from sticky traps and an ultra-violet insectocutor showed that adult deathwatch beetles were trapped from May to July. The beetles were attracted to natural and UV light, and more beetles were caught on white coloured traps than yellow, blue or red traps. Deathwatch beetles comprised 30–40% of all arthropods caught. The weekly trap catch of all arthropods, including deathwatch beetle, was positively correlated with ambient temperature. Adult beetles flew in buildings at ambient temperatures greater than 17°C. Arthropods caught in the buildings were categorised as resident, over-wintering or non-resident arthropods. Predatory spiders comprised 13% of arthropods caught and the predatory beetle, Korynetes caeruleus de Geer, was found in all four buildings. There was no evidence of other predators or parasitoids of the deathwatch beetle  相似文献

The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), is an important insect pest in food processing facilities. Pheromone trapping is frequently used to monitor red flour beetle populations in structures; however, the optimal trap density and the relationship between trap captures and beetle density is not known. Two experiments were performed concurrently in environmentally controlled 30‐m2 walk‐in chambers to determine the relationship between aggregation pheromone trap captures of red flour beetles and beetle and trap number. In one experiment, beetle density was kept constant at 200 individuals per chamber while trap number was varied from 1 to 8, and in the other experiment trap number remained constant at one per chamber while beetle density varied from 20 to 800 individuals. Results indicated that approximately one out of 23 red flour beetles were captured in a trap. Number of beetles captured in traps increased significantly as beetle density increased; however, the proportion of beetles captured remained consistent across beetle densities with a mean of 4.7 ± 0.6% of individuals captured. Trap captures varied significantly with trap placement within experimental chambers, indicating that subtle differences in the trapping environment can influence trap captures. Data suggested that trap densities of 0.07–0.10 m?2 (2–3 traps per chamber) would maximize trap capture, whereas a trap density of 0.13 m?2 (four traps per chamber) would maximize the predictive ability of a trapping equation estimating beetle density from trap captures. Results provide information needed to more thoroughly explore how environmental factors might influence red flour beetle trap capture in the absence of changes in beetle density. Further understanding of these relationships will allow for more accurate assessments of absolute beetle density from pheromone trap capture data.  相似文献

Pheromone-based monitoring could be a very efficient method to assess the conservation status of rare and elusive insect species, but there are still few studies for which pheromone traps have been used to obtain information on presence, abundance, phenology and movements of such insects. We performed a mark-recapture study of two threatened saproxylic beetles, Osmoderma eremita (Scarabaeidae) and its predator Elater ferrugineus (Elateridae), in two beech forests of central Italy using pheromone baited window traps and unbaited pitfall traps. Two lures were used: (1) the male-produced sex pheromone of O. eremita (racemic γ-decalactone) to attract females of both species, and (2) the female-produced sex pheromone of E. ferrugineus (7-methyloctyl (Z)-4-decenoate), to attract conspecific males. In total, 13 O. eremita and 1,247 E. ferrugineus individuals were trapped. For E. ferrugineus, males were detected earlier than females, and 7-methyloctyl (Z)-4-decenoate was much more efficient lure compared to racemic γ-decalactone in detecting its presence. The population size at the two sites were estimated to 520 and 1,369 individuals, respectively. Our model suggests a sampling effort of ten traps checked for 3 days being sufficient to detect the presence of E. ferrugineus at a given site. The distribution of dispersal distances for the predator was best described by the negative exponential function with 1 % of the individuals dispersing farther than 1,600 m from their natal site. In contrast to studies on these beetles in Northern Europe, the activity pattern of the two beetle species was not influenced by variation in temperature during the season.  相似文献

Successful latitudinal expansions into temperate climates depend largely upon the evolution of novel adaptive traits or the presence of pre-adaptive or exapted mechanisms for survival in seasonal climates. Geographic comparisons of ancestral (pre-expansion) and derived (post-expansion) populations provide a useful framework for understanding the evolutionary conditions that facilitate geographic expansions. Using a common agricultural pest, the Colorado Potato Beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) as a model, we conducted a regional comparison of cold hardiness and overwintering success among ancestral (southern Mexico) and derived (Vermont and Kansas, USA) L. decemlineata populations. In order to determine if ancestral and derived beetle populations vary physiologically for cold hardiness, we compared supercooling points (SCPs) of three geographic populations of L. decemlineata. We also tested if ancestral and derived beetle populations differed in their overwintering behavior and success by performing an overwintering field experiment. Ancestral and derived populations did not express different physiological responses (i.e. SCPs) to freezing temperatures. However, ancestral and derived populations responded differently to the onset of winter conditions and displayed dissimilar overwintering behaviors. The majority of ancestral beetles failed to initiate diapause and dug upward within experimental mesocosms. Differences in overwintering behavior also resulted in significant variation in overwintering success as derived populations displayed higher overwintering survivorship when compared with ancestral populations. Given our results, it is evident that research exploring the interaction of the ecological factors and evolutionary processes is necessary to fully realize the dynamics of biological invasions.  相似文献
