The boundary dynamics of a genetic model for an age-structured population in a temporally fluctuating environment are analyzed. The condition for invasion by a new allele identifies the logarithmic growth rate a of each life history phenotype as the fitness measure relevant to “r-selection.” An analytical formula is obtained for fitness a when temporal variance in life history characters is small. This formula reveals the major qualitative and quantitative effects of the average life history, fluctuations, and temporal autocorrelation on fitness. A similar approximation is obtained for the log-variance of population number so that the statistical distribution of population size can be estimated.  相似文献

Populations of Drosophila melanogaster were maintained for 36 generations in r- and K-selected environments in order to test the life-history predictions of theories on density-dependent selection. In the r-selection environment, populations were reduced to low densities by density-independent adult mortality, whereas populations in the K-selection environment were maintained at their carrying capacity. Some of the experimental results support the predictions or r- and K-selection theory; relative to the r-selected populations, the K-selected populations evolved an increased larval-to-adult viability, larger body size, and longer development time at high larval densities. Mueller and Ayala (1981) found that K-selected populations also have a higher rate of population growth at high densities. Other predictions of the thoery are contradicted by the lack of differences between the r and K populations in adult longevity and fecundity and a slower rate of development for r-selected individuals at low densities. The differences between selected populations in larval survivorship, larval-to-adult development time, and adult body size are strongly dependent on larval density, and there is a significant interaction between populations and larval density for each trait. This manifests an inadequacy of the theory on r- and K-selection, which does not take into account such interactions between genotypes and environments. We describe mechanisms that may explain the evolution of preadult life-history traits in our experiment and discuss the need for changes in theories of density-dependent selection.  相似文献

Within-species variation in animal body size predicts major differences in life history, for example, in reproductive development, fecundity, and even longevity. Purely from an energetic perspective, large size could entail larger energy reserves, fuelling different life functions, such as reproduction and survival (the “energy reserve” hypothesis). Conversely, larger body size could demand more energy for maintenance, and larger individuals might do worse in reproduction and survival under resource shortage (the “energy demand” hypothesis). Disentangling these alternative hypotheses is difficult because large size often correlates with better resource availability during growth, which could mask direct effects of body size on fitness traits. Here, we used experimental body size manipulation in the freshwater cnidarian Hydra oligactis, coupled with manipulation of resource (food) availability to separate direct effects of body size from resource availability on fitness traits (sexual development time, fecundity, and survival). We found significant interaction between body size and food availability in sexual development time in both males and females, such that large individuals responded less strongly to variation in resource availability. These results are consistent with an energy reserve effect of large size in Hydra. Surprisingly, the response was different in males and females: small and starved females delayed their reproduction, while small and starved males developed reproductive organs faster. In case of fecundity and survival, both size and food availability had significant effects, but we detected no interaction between them. Our observations suggest that in Hydra, small individuals are sensitive to fluctuations in resource availability, but these small individuals are able to adjust their reproductive development to maintain fitness.  相似文献

The cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus possesses a circadian clock in the form of a group of proteins whose concentrations and phosphorylation states oscillate with daily periodicity under constant conditions. The circadian clock regulates the cell cycle such that the timing of the cell divisions is biased toward certain times during the circadian period, but the mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains unclear. Here, we propose a mechanism in which a protein limiting for division accumulates at a rate proportional to the cell volume growth and is modulated by the clock. This “modulated rate” model, in which the clock signal is integrated over time to affect division timing, differs fundamentally from the previously proposed “gating” concept, in which the clock is assumed to suppress divisions during a specific time window. We found that although both models can capture the single-cell statistics of division timing in S. elongatus, only the modulated rate model robustly places divisions away from darkness during changes in the environment. Moreover, within the framework of the modulated rate model, existing experiments on S. elongatus are consistent with the simple mechanism that division timing is regulated by the accumulation of a division limiting protein in a phase with genes whose activity peaks at dusk.  相似文献

The effects of cold shock (4°C for 18–24 h) on survival of Trichogramma buesi females, their fecundity, and the inclination to parasitize grain moth eggs were studied under laboratory conditions. Cold shock did not result in any significant change in the survival rate, whereas the fraction of females that parasitized grain moth eggs and the fecundity of these females slightly decreased. However, females which had already started oviposition before cold shock infested grain moth eggs much more frequently. In most insect species studied, cold shock results in a sharp decrease or even disruption of the effect of experience on the subsequent behavior. Thus, the results of this study suggest that “the effect of acquired experience” (a tendency to continue infestation of the particular host species) in Trichogramma females is based not on learning or not only on learning but on some other, possibly hormonal mechanisms.  相似文献

The Gipsies, a particular ethnic and social group living mostly in the Eastern European countries, have been studied in terms of r- and K-selection. Considering the variables of fertility, birth spacing, mortality, age distribution, and physical parameters, they proved to be more r-selected than the Hungarians. The main factors bringing about these differences on the scale of r- and K-strategy come from both genetic and cultural biases. Resource unpredictability and social uncertainty, important components of the Gipsies' way of life, contribute to their higher fertility and mortality. Other characteristics, such as a female surplus in the birth sex ratio and the good survival capacity of the “premature” Gipsy infants, seem to show genetic influences as “racial” traits. Finally, a particular family arrangement characteristic of Gipsies, the father-absent household, is likely to have influence on their early sexual activity, even promiscuity, and unstable pair bonds. These analyses, that should be completed with further detailed investigations of social factors, may contribute to the understanding and improvement of the Gipsies' living conditions, after their ignorance in the Communist regime.  相似文献

This review has focused on the interleukin, interferon, and transforming growth factor families of cytokines. The complexity of the cytokine network of interrelating peptides with multiple overlapping regulatory functions is just beginning to be understood. Most of the biologic activities attributed to each cytokine are based on in vitro analysis from a “macroimmunologic” perspective, and therefore only represents a “best guess” of the true potential role of these substances in human immunology. It is also important to keep in mind that the in vivo biologic effects of many of these cytokines are exerted in an autocrine and/or paracrine fashion (at a “microimmunologic” level), thus in this in vivo milieu, cytokines may simultaneously be acting synergistically or antagonistically. The significance of their in vivo biologic effects may be distinct from those in vitro effects determined in the cellular immunology laboratory. Through the development of new sensitive immunoassays that can function at the level of a single cell and modern molecular biologic and immunocytochemistry techniques, an appreciation of how the in vivo pleotropic effects of cytokines are regulated is developing.  相似文献

Summary A computer simulation was used to investigate the relative effects of changes in net fecundity and development time on population growth rate (r). Increases in net fecundity had the largest effect on r when net fecundity is small. Conversely, decreases in developmental time had the largest effect on r when net fecundity was large. The intersection point where similar changes in developmental time, and net fecundity had equivalent effects on r was also investigated in four organisms with very different life histories. Cases were considered where changes in net fecundity and developmental time are correlated and different results were obtained.  相似文献

In this study we examined the direct and correlated responses for fast and slow preadult development time in three laboratory populations of the bean weevil (Acanthoscelides obtectus). The first population (“base,” B) has experienced laboratory conditions for more than 10 years; the second (“young,” Y) and the third (“old,” O) populations were selected for early and late reproduction, respectively, before the onset of the present experiments. All three populations are successfully selected for both fast and slow preadult development. The realized heritabilities are very similar in all populations, suggesting a similar level of the additive genetic variance for preadult development. We studied the correlated responses on the following life-history traits: egg-to-adult viability, wet body weight, early fecundity, late fecundity, total realized female fecundity, and adult longevity. All life-history traits examined here, except for the egg-to-adult viability, are affected by selection for preadult development in at least in one of the studied populations. In all three populations, beetles selected for slow preadult development are heavier and live longer than those from the fast-selected lines. The findings with respect to adult longevity are unexpected, because the control Y and O populations, selected for short- and long-lived beetles, respectively, do not show significant differences in preadult development. Thus, our results indicate that some kind of asymmetrical correlated responses occur for preadult development and adult longevity each time that direct selection has been imposed on one or the other of these two traits. In contrast to studies with Drosophila, it appears that for insect species that are aphagous as adults, selection for preadult development entails selection for alleles that also change the adult longevity, but that age-specific selection (applied in the Y and O populations) mostly affects the alleles that have no significant influence on the preadult development. Implications of these findings on the developmental and evolutionary theories of aging are also discussed.  相似文献

The kinetics of template-free and template-instructed RNA synthesis by Qβ replicase were investigated. Template-instructed RNA synthesis has different growth rates in the exponential (excess enzyme) and the linear (excess template) phase of growth. In the absence of exogenous template, Qβ replicase synthesizes self-replicating RNA after an initial lag phase (“template-free” synthesis). The lag time can be determined by extrapolating the growth curve to the time of appearance of the first self-replicating strand. Growth rates in the exponential and linear phase, and especially the times of the lag phase for nucleotide incorporations under identical template-free conditions, show considerable scattering in contrast to the deterministic behavior of template-instructed synthesis. Evaluation of the kinetic data reveals that the time lag of template-free synthesis is strongly dependent on the concentration of the nucleoside triphosphate and the enzyme. The lag time is approximately inversely proportional to the powers 2.75 of the nucleotide and 2.5 of the enzyme concentration, respectively, both being lower limit values. The rate of template-instructed RNA synthesis is linearly proportional to the enzyme concentration and less than linearly proportional to the triphosphate concentration, in accordance with a substrate dependence of a Michaelis-Menten type of mechanism. The kinetic data cannot be reconciled with the proposition that template-free synthesis is due to low concentrations of templates present as impurities in the incorporation mixture and giving rise to autocatalytic RNA synthesis by a template-instructed mechanism. Rats infected orally with Trichinella spiralis developed an immunity that was induced by and expressed against separate phases of the parasite's enteral life cycle. Infectious muscle larvae generated an immune response (rapid expulsion) that was directed against the very early intestinal infection and resulted in the expulsion of worms within 24 hr. This response eliminated more than 95% of worms in an oral challenge inoculum. Developing larvae (preadults) also induced an immune response that was expressed against adult worms. The effect on adults was dependent upon continuous exposure of worms to the immune environment throughout their enteral larval development. Immunity induced by preadult T. spiralis was not expressed against adult worms transferred from nonimmune rats. While adult worms were resistant to the immunity engendered by preadults they induced an efficient immunity that was autospecific. Both “preadult” and “adult” immunities were expressed in depression of worm fecundity as well as in the expulsion of adults from the gut. However, the two reactions differed in respect to their kinetics and their efficiency against various worm burdens. Preadult immunity was directed mainly against fecundity whereas adult immunity favored worm expulsion. All responses (rapid expulsion, preadult and adult immunity, and antifecundity) acted synergistically to produce sterile immunity against challenge infections of up to 5000 muscle larvae. These findings indicate that the host protective response to T. spiralis is a complex, multifactorial process that operates sequentially and synergistically to protect the host against reinfection.  相似文献

To clarify the effects of sublethal concentration of insecticide on the growth, development and reproduction of Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), the sublethal and transgenerational effects of the LC30 of six insecticides on adults and progeny (F1 and F2 generations) were studied using age-stage, two-sex life tables. Exposure to six insecticides had significant negative impacts on the life-history traits of B. dorsalis and led to reduced adult longevity and fecundity in F0, a longer larval stage duration in F1, and reduced fertility and survival. The intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ), and net reproductive rate (R0) were reduced in F1, with the greatest reduction observed in the chlorpyrifos treatment. In the F2 generation, the adverse effects were weakened, only the cyantraniliprole treatment had lower values than the control, and the fecundity of other treatments returned to normal. Obvious “hormesis” phenomena were not observed in any of the generations. Based on the population hazard index, chlorpyrifos had the best control effect in the early stage, and cyantraniliprole had the best control effect in the long term. These results indicate that the LC30 of the six insecticides exert different transgenerational effects on the B. dorsalis population.  相似文献

Growth and oxygen consumption was measured in developing herring Clupea harengus (L.) embryos. By considering the variations in oxygen consumption with embryonic size and growth rate, an attempt was made to partition oxygen consumption between growth related and growth unrelated (i.e., “maintenance”) processes. The metabolic cost of growth was estimated as ≈ 150 ng O2 · μg dry wt tissue formed−1. This estimate compares favourably with the biochemical estimate of the costs of transport and net biosynthesis. The “maintenance” component was proportional to embryonic mass (77 ng O2 · μg−1· d−1). Over the entire embryonic period, growth processes were responsible for ≈ 25% of the cumulated oxygen consumption.  相似文献

Aging may be a consequence of mutation accumulation or of negative pleiotropic correlations between performance late and earlier in the lifespan. This study used artificial selection on flies derived from two different base stocks to produce “young” and “old” lines, propagated by breeding from young and old adults respectively. Virgin and mated adults of both sexes from the “old” lines lived longer than “young” line flies. “Young” and “old” mated females did not differ in fecundity or fertility early in the lifespan, but “old” line females had higher fecundity and fertility late in life. The results therefore suggested either that the response to selection had revealed the effect of mutation accumulation, or that pleiotropy involving characters other than early fecundity must have been involved. Development time from egg to adult was longer in the “old” lines. Competition of selected line larvae from one base stock against mutant marked larvae from the same base stock revealed that, at a wide range of larval densities, “old” line larvae showed lower survival rates than “young” line larvae. Thorax length and wet weight were significantly greater in the “old” line flies from one base stock. The results may imply that the selection regime in the “old” lines favored extended growth during development to produce a more durable adult soma, despite the cost in increased larval mortality and delayed reproduction, because the potential reproductive benefits later in life were increased. However, the differences between larvae from “old” and “young” lines could also be attributable to density differences, and this possibility needs systematic investigation.  相似文献

Glyptosaurine lizards (Glyptosaurinae, Anguidae) are an extinct group of heavily armored lizards known from North America, Europe and Asia. Glyptosaurine lizards, taxa that possess fully developed tuberculated dermal armor, appear to have been established in North America by late early Puercan time (To3). “Proxestops,” a taxon distinguished by a combination of vermiculate and tuberculated osteoderm sculpturing, is considered to be a non-glyptosaurine, a sister taxon of the Glyptosaurinae. Known from only fragmentary remains, its wide chronostratigraphic distribution suggests that “Proxestops” is a form genus that, in all probability, represents more than one taxon, that ranges from the middle Paleocene to the early Eocene of North America. Moreover, the taxa Odaxosaurus piger, Parodaxosaurus sanjuanensis and “Proxestops” are best considered “proto-glyptosaurines”. “Melanosaurins” and glyptosaurins were well-established by the early Eocene, especially in North America, and are here documented by their type species and chronostratigraphic levels. Both tribes are present in Europe (MP7), too, but the record is not as estensive as that of North America. The North American taxon Gaultia silvaticus (Wa0) is transitional between a “melanosaurin” and glyptosaurin. Because it lacks the well-defined hexagonal osteoderms that characterize the Glyptosaurini, it is removed from that group and considered to be a “melanosaurin”. The “melanosaurin” taxon “Xestopssavagei (Wa4–Wa6) cannot be referred to Xestops (Br2) based on non-corresponding elements and because superficial similarity does not justify assignment to this taxon. Arpadosaurus sepulchralis (Wa6?), whose holotype is a fragmentary right frontal, is considered a subjective junior synonym of A. gazinorum, based on minor differences in the epidermal scale pattern that probably represent individual variation. “Glyptosaurusagmodon (Wa6?), based on a partial right maxilla, cannot be referred to Glyptosaurus (sensu stricto), and the material upon which this taxon is based bears strong resemblance to material identified as cf. “?Paraglyptosaurusyatkolai (Wa5–Wa6). “Glyptosaurusrhodinos (Wa5) is based on an incomplete parietal, and its reference to Glyptosaurus is considered problematic. Eoglyptosaurus donohoei (Wa7) is probably valid and is re-established here. Glyptosaurus (sensu stricto) is known solely from the middle Eocene (Br2) by G. sylvestris. Dimetoposaurus wyomingensis (Br3) is removed from Xestops vagans because its synonymy was based on superficial similarities. Helodermoides tuberculatus, the largest and last glyptosaurin (Ch3), is restricted to the Chadronian of North America. Only the “melanosaurin” Peltosaurus granulosus (Or2–Or3), which includes the species P. abbotti, seems to have crossed the Eocene-Oligocene boundary, and appears to be largely restricted to the Orellan, but extended into the Arikareean. European glyptosaurines are also represented by both glyptosaurins and “melanosaurins” early in the Eocene (MP7). Placosauriops-like “melanosaurins” are known from Dormaal (MP7), and the glyptosaurin taxon?Placosaurus ragei occurs at the same level. “Placosauriops abderhaldeni” has been identified from the Grube Messel (MP11), but this assignment remains dubious because the species has not been adequately diagnosed, and the holotype species is from the Geiseltal (MP13), which is some 4.5 million years younger. Placosauriops weigelti (MP13) is the only valid species of this genus. Paraxestops stehlini (MP14) is not referable to the North American taxon Xestops, and its relationship to Placosauriops has not been studied. The late Eocene glyptosaurins Placosaurus estesi (MP17) and P. rugosus (MP18) are the last glyptosaurines known from Europe and appear to have gone extinct at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary, casulties perhaps of the “Grande Coupure”. Asian glyptosaurines are known solely from one species, Stenoplacosaurus mongoliensis, from the middle Eocene (Sharamurunian) of China. Glyptosaurines most likely originated in North America, diversified by late Paleocene time, and rapidly spread across the North Atlantic into Europe by the early Eocene. Both “melanosaurins” and glyptosaurins took a foothold in Europe by the early Neustrian, but the glyptosaurins, aside from one occurrence (Dormaal, MP7), were conspicuously absent for most of Neustrian through early Robiacian time. In North America, glyptosaurins diversified during the early and middle Eocene, while in Europe small “melanosaurins” were a prominent part of the paleoherpetofauna, and glyptosaurins are unknown for most of the Neustrian through the Geiseltalian, in both the fossilferous Lagerstätten of Messel and Geiseltal. Stenoplacosaurus is the only known glyptosaurin glyptosaurine from Asia, and its abrupt appearance during the late Eocene suggests the possiblity of a Beringian dispersal from North America into Asia.  相似文献

A reanalysis of Osborn's titanothere data indicates that extrapolative growth of a constant allometric relationship alone (“hypermorphosis”) does not account for the trend toward body and horn size increase. Empirically, we also observe possible positive changes in the y-intercept (“predisplacement” or early onset of development), and possibly, changes in the slope (“acceleration/neoteny” or changes in growth rate) between the Oligocene and Eocene groups. Theoretically, these may be responses to more massive body shapes, perforce accompanying size increase, which increase the amount of force to which the horns were subjected.  相似文献

Interconnected lakes Bol’shoe Leprindo and Maloe Leprindo in Transbaikalia hosted large (extinct) and dwarf charr forms. Rarely “small” individuals intermediate in size between these forms are caught. In order to assess morphological, ecological, and genetic differentiation of sympatric charr forms and parapatric charr populations we studied their meristic and morphometric characters, feeding, breeding, and growth; we also investigated variation at 8 microsatellite loci using DNA isolated both from contemporary and historic samples. Profound differences were found between large and dwarf charr in growth rate, feeding (piscivores and highly specialized zooplanktivores, respectively), spawning time, and morphology. Dwarf charr from the two lakes demonstrate minor differences in morphology and growth rate. “Small” individuals are morphologically similar with dwarf charr and spawn together with them, they are recruited from dwarf form in late ontogeny as the result of transition to piscivorous feeding and growth acceleration. Microsatellite analysis showed that: (1) large and dwarf charr forms display high degree of genetic differentiation and reproductive isolation; (2) dwarf charr from interconnected lakes belong to different isolted populations; (3) “small charr” are genetically identical with dwarfs. The degree of ecomorphological and genetic differentiation between large and dwarf forms places charr from Leprindo Lakes among the most strongly differentiated Arctic charr forms’ flocks known at the vast range of S. alpinus complex.  相似文献

For many animal species, there is a relationship between life history strategies, as predicted by the rK-selection theory, degree of habitat specialization and response to habitat alteration and loss. Here we compare two sympatric woodlice species with contrasting patterns of habitat use and geographical distribution. We predict that Atlantoscia floridana (Philosciidae), considered a habitat generalist, would exhibit the r-selected traits, whereas Balloniscus glaber (Balloniscidae), considered a habitat specialist, should have the K-selected traits. We analyzed several life history traits as well as life and fecundity tables using 715 and 842 females of A. floridana and B. glaber, respectively, from populations living in syntopy in southern Brazil. As predicted, most evaluated traits allow A. floridana to be considered an r-strategist and B. glaber a K-strategist: A. floridana showed a shorter lifetime, faster development, earlier reproduction, a smaller parental investment, higher net reproductive rate (R0), a higher growth rate (r) and a shorter generation time (T) in comparison to B. glaber. A. floridana seems to be a successful colonizer with a high reproductive output. These characteristics explain its local abundance, commonness and wide geographical distribution. On the contrary, B. glaber has a restricted geographical distribution that is mainly associated with Atlantic forest fragments, a biome threatened by deforestation and replacement by monocultures. Its narrow distribution combined with the K-selected traits may confer to this species an increased extinction risk.  相似文献

Atmospheric oxygen has varied substantially over the Phanerozoic (the last 500 million years) with periods of both hyperoxia and hypoxia relative to today. Unlike some insect groups, cockroaches have not been reported to exhibit gigantism during the late Paleozoic period of hyperoxia. Studies with modern insects have shown a diversity of developmental responses to oxygen, suggesting that evaluation of historical hypotheses should focus on groups most closely related to those present in the Paleozoic. Here we investigated the impacts of Paleozoic oxygen levels (12–31%) on the development of Blatella germanica cockroaches. Body size decreased strongly in hypoxia, but was only mildly affected by hyperoxia. Development time, growth rate and fecundity were negatively impacted by both hypoxia and hyperoxia. Tracheal volumes were inversely proportional to rearing oxygen, suggesting developmental responses aimed at regulating internal oxygen level. The results of these experiments on a modern species are consistent with the fossil record and suggest that changes in atmospheric oxygen would be challenging for many insects, despite plastic compensatory responses in the tracheal system.  相似文献

The development time for an autogenous strain of Culex pipiens was prolonged after the mosquitoes were “cured” of their symbiotic Wolbachia pipients with tetracycline. Eggs produced by aposymbiotic females caged with either aposymbiotic or normal males failed to hatch. Neither growth rate nor reproduction was improved by feeding the larvae a commensal flagellate, bovine blood cells, or adenylic acid.  相似文献
