Using cryo‐SEM with EDX fundamental structural and mechanical properties of the moss Ceratodon purpureus (Hedw.) Brid. were studied in relation to tolerance of freezing temperatures. In contrast to more complex plants, no ice accumulated within the moss during the freezing event. External ice induced desiccation with the response being a function of cell type; water‐filled hydroid cells cavitated and were embolized at ?4 °C while parenchyma cells of the inner cortex exhibited cytorrhysis, decreasing to ~20% of their original volume at a nadir temperature of ?20 °C. Chlorophyll fluorescence showed that these winter acclimated mosses displayed no evidence of damage after thawing from ?20 °C while GCMS showed that sugar concentrations were not sufficient to confer this level of freezing tolerance. In addition, differential scanning calorimetry showed internal ice nucleation occurred in hydrated moss at ~?12 °C while desiccated moss showed no evidence of freezing with lowering of nadir temperature to ?20 °C. Therefore the rapid dehydration of the moss provides an elegantly simple solution to the problem of freezing; remove that which freezes.  相似文献

The ice nucleation activity (INA) of three strains of Pseudomonas fluorecens, nos 553, 554 and 606, isolated by the Institute for Pathogen Diagnostics in Ascherleben, Germany, was determined. Under equal growth conditions and at given test temperatures the ice nucleation frequency spectra of the isolates differed slightly. The fraction of cells which acted as ice nuclei increased with falling temperatures. Below ?5°C the nucleation frequency rose from 10-8 to 10-3. Between, 0 and ?10°C only a fraction of approximately 2 to 5 × 10-3 cells performed ice nucleation activity. Fifteen newly synthesized chemicals showed no or only a very slight intrinsic INA at ?5°C and ?7°C. The compounds were used as antinucleators against INA-exhibiting bacteria. In INA-exhibiting suspensions of isolate 553 bacterial ice nuclei were reduced after treatment with the 15 compounds. Dependent on the compounds, a nucleation frequency of ?8.32 to ?5.10 was detected at ?5°C. At ?7°C, the frequency amounted to ?7.89 to ?5.05. As the temperature was lowered to ?10°C in bacterial suspensions which were treated with 9 (of the 15) compounds, a remainder of 1.79 to 5.91 × 10-6 cells retained ice nucleation activity. The most pronounced inhibitory effect was noted for the compounds 1989/6255, 1989/6436 and 1990/6158. In a 10-fold dilution of isolate 553 the compound 1989/6153 inhibited ice nucleation between 0 and 10°C so strongly that it was about 100 times below the control. The ‘tube-freezing’ method showed that on excised corn leaves treated with 1989/6259 and 1990/6155, the bacterial INA decreased while the super-cooling was more pronounced. ‘Frostgard’, 1986/6205, 1986/6199 and 1989/6259 inhibited most INA-exhibiting bacteria on corn seedlings. Compared to inoculated plants, a significantly higher percentage of treated plants survived at ?2 and ?3°C.  相似文献

The Asian clam Corbicula fluminea, originating from Southeast Asia, was first recorded in Lake Constance in 2003 and developed local mass occurrences afterwards. Effects of harsh winter conditions in 2005/2006 associated with a strongly decreasing water level were studied at three different depths at and below the mean low water level (MLL, MLL ?1 m and MLL ?3 m). Low winter temperatures produced a massive die-off of the C. fluminea population. The mortality of the clams was size class and depth dependent. At the mean low water level (MLL), all clams died because of lying dry. However, at MLL ?1 m and at MLL ?3 m, mortality was a consequence of water temperatures around 2°C for nearly 3 months. At MLL ?3 m, clams >5 mm died later than young clams <5 mm and later than clams of all sizes at MLL ?1 m. But in late spring even the clams >5 mm at MLL ?3 m were dead and only about 1% of the overall population of C. fluminea survived the winter conditions until spring 2006.Lethal effects of low water temperatures on C. fluminea, which may become effective only after a time lag, were corroborated in an outdoor mesocosm experiment with constant water level and without predation.  相似文献

Wyochernes asiaticus (Arachnida: Pseudoscorpiones: Chernetidae) is a pseudoscorpion distributed across Beringia, the areas of Yukon, Alaska and Siberia that remained unglaciated at the last glacial maximum. Along with low temperatures, its streamside habitat suggests that submergence during flood events is an important physiological challenge for this species. We collected W. asiaticus in midsummer from 66.8°N Yukon Territory, Canada, and measured thermal and immersion tolerance. Wyochernes asiaticus is freeze-avoidant, with a mean supercooling point of ?6.9 °C. It remains active at low temperatures (mean critical thermal minimum, CTmin, is ?3.6 °C) and has a critical thermal maximum (CTmax) of 37.8 °C, which is lower than other arachnids and consistent with its restriction to high latitudes. Fifty per cent of W. asiaticus individuals survived immersion in oxygen-depleted water for 17 days, suggesting that this species has high tolerance to immersion during flooding events. To our knowledge, these are the first data on the environmental physiology of any pseudoscorpion and a new addition to our understanding of the biology of polar microarthropods.  相似文献

The filamentous Cyanobacterium Arthrospira is commercially produced and is a functional, high-value, health food. We identified 5 low temperature and low light intensity tolerant strains of Arthrospira sp. (GMPA1, GMPA7, GMPB1, GMPC1, and GMPC3) using ethyl methanesulfonate mutagenesis and low temperature screening. The 5 Arthrospira strains grew rapidly below 14?°C, 43.75 μmol photons m?2 s?1 and performed breed conservation at 2.5?°C, 8.75 μmol photons m?2 s?1. We used morphological identification and molecular genetic analysis to identify GMPA1, GMPA7, GMPB1 and GMPC1 as Arthrospira platensis, while GMPC3 was identified as Arthrospira maxima. Growth at different culture temperatures was determined at regular intervals using dry biomass. At 16?°C and 43.75 μmol photons m?2 s?1, the maximum dry biomass production and the mean dry biomass productivity of GMPA1, GMPB1, and GMPC1 were 2057?±?80 mg l?1, 68.7?±?2.5 mg l?1 day?1, 1839?±?44 mg l?1, 60.6?±?1.8 mg l?1 day?1, and 2113?±?64 mg l?1, 77.7?±?2.5 mg l?1 day?1 respectively. GMPB1 was chosen for additional low temperature tolerance studies and growth temperature preference. In winter, GMPB1 grew well at mean temperatures <10?°C, achieving 3258 mg dry biomass from a starting 68 mg. In summer, GMPB1 grew rapidly at mean temperatures more than 28?°C, achieving 1140 mg l?1 dry biomass from a starting 240 mg. Phytonutrient analysis of GMPB1 showed high levels of C-phycocyanin and carotenoids. Arthrospira metabolism relates to terpenoids, and the methyl-d-erythritol 4-phosphate pathway is the only terpenoid biosynthetic pathway in Cyanobacteria. The 1-deoxy-d-xylulose 5-phosphate reductoisomerase (DXR) gene from GMPB1 was cloned and phylogenetic analysis showed that GMPB1 is closest to the Cyanobacterium Oscillatoria nigro-viridis PCC711. Low temperature tolerant Arthrospira strains could broaden the areas suitable for cultivation, extend the seasonal cultivation time, and lower production costs.  相似文献

The effect of altitude and season on abundance and diversity of the culturable heterotrophic bacterial and yeast community was examined at four forest sites in the Italian Alps along an altitude gradient (545–2000 m). Independently of altitude, bacteria isolated at 0 °C (psychrophiles) were less numerous than those recovered at 20 °C. In autumn, psychrophilic bacterial population increased with altitude. The 1194 bacterial strains were primarily affiliated with the classes Alpha-, Beta-, Gammaproteobacteria, Spingobacteriia and Flavobacteriia. Fifty-seven of 112 operational taxonomic units represented potential novel species. Strains isolated at 20 °C had a higher diversity and showed similarities in taxa composition and abundance, regardless of altitude or season, while strains isolated at 0 °C showed differences in community composition at lower and higher altitudes. In contrast to bacteria, yeast diversity was season-dependent: site- and altitude-specific effects on yeast diversity were only detected in spring. Isolation temperature affected the relative proportions of yeast genera. Isolations recovered 719 strains, belonging to the classes Dothideomycetes, Saccharomycetes, Tremellomycetes and Mycrobotryomycetes. The presence of few dominant bacterial OTUs and yeast species indicated a resilient microbial population that is not affected by season or altitude. Soil nutrient contents influenced significantly abundance and diversity of culturable bacteria, but not of culturable yeasts.  相似文献

The effect of five constant temperatures of 21, 24, 27, 30 and 33 °C on adult life span, reproduction, oviposition behavior and larval developmental time of a bitter gourd inhabited coleopteran insect Epilachna dodecastigma (Wied.) (Coccinellidae) was determined in laboratory conditions under 70 ± 5 % relative humidity and a photoperiod of 12 L : 12 D. Larval developmental time of E. dodecastigma decreased as temperature increased from 21 to 33 °C. Life table data revealed that overall mortality was lowest at 27 °C and highest at 21 °C. Females lived longer than males at all temperatures; but longevity decreased with increase in temperature. Pre-oviposition period decreased significantly with increase in temperature up to 27 °C and thereafter increased at a slower rate; whereas oviposition period decreased significantly with increase in temperature. Fecundity and egg viability increased significantly with an increase in temperature up to 27 °C and thereafter decreased at a slower rate. The intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) was 0.1703, 0.1984, 0.2235, 0.2227 and 0.2181 day?1 at 21, 24, 27, 30 and 33 °C, respectively. The net reproductive rate and finite rate of increase was highest at 27 °C (R o  = 112.05; λ = 1.4233) and lowest at 21 °C (R o  = 51.23; λ = 1.2581).  相似文献

An emulsion droplet formation procedure was employed to isolate yeast cells and, in separate experiments, human red blood cells, one from another in individual droplets, and to segregate extraneous materials catalyzing the formation of ice. Emulsification succeeded in isolating the cells and permitted the observation of the supercooling of droplets containing cells whereby each droplet was observed to nucleate ice at a temperature that depended only upon the components of the droplet. The droplet formation procedures were characterized. It was shown that the surface coatings and the carrier fluids used in the preparation of the emulsions did not act as ice nucleators. It was, in this manner, possible to study the nucleation of ice brought about by supercooling and homogeneous nucleation in the volume of the droplet or by the catalysis of nucleation on or in the cells contained in the droplets. It was shown that yeast cells and red blood cells could each be supercooled to about ?40 °C in short-term experiments. The results also revealed that yeast cells did not store for infinite times at temperatures above the observed upper limit of homogeneous nucleation. The yeast cells died at rates that were exponential functions of time at ?20, ?22.5, ?25, ?29 and ?33 °C. The temperature dependence of the death rate did not correspond to a process with a normal Arrhenius activation energy. The temperature dependence did, however, suggest a potentiated heterogeneous catalysis of ice resulting in the death of the yeast cells.  相似文献

Fopius arisanus (Sonan) is a solitary parasitoid of eggs and the first instar larvae of Tephritidae. Due to the occurrence of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) in various regions and under several climatic conditions, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of different temperatures on the embryonic development (egg–adult) and determine thermal requirements and the number of annual generations F. arisanus on eggs of C. capitata. In the laboratory, eggs of C. capitata (24 h) were submitted to parasitism of F. arisanus during 6 h. Later, the eggs were placed in plastic containers (50 mL) (50 eggs/container) on a layer of artificial diet and packed in chambers at temperatures 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 28, 30, and 32 ± 1°C, RH 70 ± 10%, and a photophase of 12 h. The largest number of offspring, emergence rate, and weight of adults of F. arisanus were observed at 25°C. The highest sex ratios (sr > 0.75) were recorded at 15 and 18°C, being statistically higher than the temperatures 20°C (0.65), 22°C (0.64), 25°C (0.65), 28°C (0.49), and 30°C (0.47). At 32°C, there was no embryonic development of F. arisanus. The egg–adult period was inversely proportional to temperature. Based on the development of the biological cycle (egg–adult), the temperature threshold (T t) was 10.3°C and thermal constant (K) of 488.34 degree-days, being the number of generations/year directly proportional to the temperature increase. The data show the ability of F. arisanus to adapt to different thermal conditions, which is important for biological control programs of C. capitata.  相似文献

The effect of five constant temperatures (16, 20, 24, 28 and 32 °C) on the development, survival and reproduction of Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval) [=?Tetranychus urticae Koch (red form)] fed on cassava leaves was examined in the laboratory at 85% relative humidity. Development time of various immature stages decreased with increasing temperature, with total egg-to-adult development time varying from 27.7 to 6.7 days. The lower thermal threshold for development was 10.8 °C and the thermal constant from egg to adult was 142.4 degree-days. Pre- and post-oviposition period and female longevity all decreased as temperature increased. The longest oviposition period was observed at 20 °C with 20.4 days. Under different temperatures, mated females laid, on average, 1.0, 2.9, 4.7, 4.7 and 4.9 eggs per day, respectively. The maximum fecundity (81.5 eggs per female) was at 28 °C and the intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) was highest (0.25) at 32 °C. The results of this study indicate that T. cinnabarinus population could increase rapidly when cassava leaves serve as a food source. At the appropriate temperature T. cinnabarinus could seriously threaten growth of cassava.  相似文献

Successful commercialization of microbial biocontrol agents, such as Metarhizium spp., is often constrained by poor drying survival and shelf life. Here, we hypothesized that culture age would influence endogenous arabitol, erythritol, mannitol and trehalose contents in M. brunneum mycelium and that elevated levels of these compounds would improve drying survival and shelf life of encapsulated mycelium coupled with enhanced fungal virulence against T. molitor larvae. We found that culture age significantly influenced endogenous arabitol and mannitol contents in mycelium with highest concentrations of 0.6?±?0.2 and 2.1?±?0.2 µg/mg after 72 h, respectively. Drying survival of encapsulated mycelium was independent of culture age and polyol content with 41.1?±?4.4 to 55.0?±?6.2%. Best shelf life was determined for biomass harvested after 72 h at all investigated storage temperatures with maximum values of 59.5?±?3.3% at 5 °C followed by 54.5?±?1.6% at 18 °C and 19.4?±?1.3% at 25 °C after 6 months. Finally, high fungal virulence against T. molitor larvae of 83.3?±?7.6 to 98.0?±?1.8% was maintained during storage of encapsulated mycelium for 12 months with larval mortalities being independent of culture age and polyol content. In conclusion, our findings indicate beneficial effects of endogenous polyols in improving shelf life of encapsulated mycelium and this may spur the successful development of microbial biocontrol agents in the future.  相似文献

Small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) constitute a large, diverse, and functionally uncharacterized family of heat shock proteins. To gain insight regarding the function of sHSPs in insects, we identified genes encoding two sHSPs, Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3, from the rice pest Chilo suppressalis. The cDNAs of Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 encoded proteins of 206 and 216 amino acids with isoelectric points of 5.79 and 9.28, respectively. Further characterization indicated that both Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 lacked introns. Real-time quantitative PCR indicated that Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 were expressed at higher levels within the fat body as compared to other tissues (head, epidermis, foregut, midgut, hindgut, Malpighian tubules, and hemocytes). Expression of Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 was lowest in the hindgut and Malpighian tubules, respectively. Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 showed identical patterns in response to thermal stress from ?11 to 43 °C, and both genes were up-regulated by hot and cold temperatures. The mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) expression levels of Cshsp22.9b (KY701308) and Cshsp24.3 (KY701309) were highest after a 2-h exposure at 39 °C and started to decline at 42 °C. In response to cold temperatures, both Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 showed maximal expression after a 2-h exposure to ?3 °C. The two Cshsps were more responsive to hot than cold temperature stress and were not induced by mildly cold or warm temperatures. In conclusion, Cshsp22.9b and Cshsp24.3 could play a very important role in the regulation of physiological activities in C. suppressalis that are impacted by environmental stimuli.  相似文献

The deep-sea water of the South Pacific Gyre (SPG, 20°S–45°S) is a cold and ultra-oligotrophic environment that is the source of cold-adapted enzymes. However, the characteristic features of psychrophilic enzymes derived from culturable microbes in the SPG remained largely unknown. In this study, the degradation properties of 174 cultures from the deep water of the SPG were used to determine the diversity of cold-adapted enzymes. Thus, the abilities to degrade polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and DNA at 4, 16, and 28 °C were investigated. Most of the isolates showed one or more extracellular enzyme activities, including amylase, chitinase, cellulase, lipase, lecithinase, caseinase, gelatinase, and DNase at 4, 16, and 28 °C. Moreover, nearly 85.6 % of the isolates produced cold-adapted enzymes at 4 °C. The psychrophilic enzyme-producing isolates distributed primarily in Alteromonas and Pseudoalteromonas genera of the Gammaproteobacteria. Pseudoalteromonas degraded 9 types of macromolecules but not cellulose, Alteromonas secreted 8 enzymes except for cellulase and chitinase. Interestingly, the enzymatic activities of Gammaproteobacteria isolates at 4 °C were higher than those observed at 16 or 28 °C. In addition, we cloned and expressed a gene encoding an α-amylase (Amy2235) from Luteimonas abyssi XH031T, and examined the properties of the recombinant protein. These cold-active enzymes may have huge potential for academic research and industrial applications. In addition, the capacity of the isolates to degrade various types of organic matter may indicate their unique ecological roles in the elemental biogeochemical cycling of the deep biosphere.  相似文献

This study was carried out to determine the effect of chilling on both cold-acclimated and non-acclimated chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cultivars (Gökçe and Can?tez 87). Chickpea seedlings grown in soil culture for 12 days were subjected to chilling temperatures (2 and 4°C for 12 days) after maintaining in cold-acclimation (10°C, 7 days) or non-acclimation (25°C, 7 days) periods. The lowest values of growth parameters were obtained with cold-acclimated plants, whereas non-acclimated plants exhibited the lowest water content values, especially at 2°C. There was no effect of cold-acclimation period on chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. Plants subjected to chilling temperatures after cold-acclimation were more tolerant with respect to chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and Gökçe had better photosystem II (PSII) photochemical activity. In the chilling treatments, total chlorophyll (a + b) content reduced, especially at 2°C, while anthocyanin and flavonoid contents increased to a greater extent in Gökçe and carotenoid content of the cultivars did not change. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content was higher for Can?tez 87, mostly at 2°C, while proline accumulation was greater for Gökçe. The cold-acclimation period led to a remarkable increase in antioxidant enzyme activities of both cultivars. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was much higher in Gökçe for both chilling temperatures and the ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity increased only in the cold-acclimated 4°C treatments. Similarly, with APX activity, the glutathione reductase (GR) and peroxidase (POD) activities of cultivars were higher in cold-acclimated plants at both the chilling temperatures, mostly in Gökçe. The results of this study indicate that cold-acclimation increased the cultivars ability to withstand the chilling temperatures. The lower MDA content and higher antioxidant and photochemical activities in Gökçe indicated an enhanced chilling tolerance capacity of this cultivar to protect the plant from oxidative damage.  相似文献

We tested the nucleation activity (INA) of 122 strains of plant pathogenic bacteria (12 varieties and 15 subspecies) stored in collection of the University of Göttingen (GSPB). The strains are isolates from diverse host plants and different geographic regions. One-hundred and seven isolates belong to the Pseudomonads, nine to the genus Erwinia and six to the Xanthomonas. The INA was analysed by ?3°, ?5°, ?7° and ?9°C. The observed value of INA cells ranged from non-detectable to a maximum concentration of ice nuclei in a range from ?7.85 at ?5°C to ?2.63 at ?3°C in 1.82 × 103 cfu to 3.3 × 103 cfu per ml. The data indicated that 71 (58.2%) of the 122 strains had INA cells, and 51 (41.8%) were inactive. The highest amount of strains with INA cells we found in Pseudomonads (69). In comparison only one strain was active at Erwinia and at Xanthomonas, 46 strains were isolated from the genus Phaseolus vulgaris and 6 from the genus Beta vulgaris. The other isolates with ice active cells belonged to the 13 other plant species. The 51 inactive pathovars were isolated from 21 different culture plants. The pathogens under test were isolated in 16 different countries, mainly in Germany and USA.  相似文献

Responses of seed germination to air temperature, water potential, light, and smoke were studied in the laboratory for seeds of the invasive bunch grass Pennisetum ciliare (L.) Link (syn. Cenchrus ciliare L.; buffel grass). First introduced to North America during the mid-twentieth Century for establishing pastures, this African bunch grass has become an invasive species of concern. Across all the experiments conducted, a low germination was observed for P. ciliare fascicles that never exceeded 30 % at 21 days after sowing. Optimal day/night air temperatures for germination, controlled with an environmental chamber, were 25/15 and 30/20 °C, while extreme temperatures of 15/5 and 45/35 °C inhibited germination. By sowing seeds of P. ciliare under different water potentials, created with aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol, an optimum of ?0.03 MPa led to the highest germination, while no germination was observed at ?1.0 MPa. Monochromatic optical filters were utilized to germinate seeds under various wavelengths, of which red (650 nm) and far red (730 nm) led to the highest germination. In addition, seeds that were incubated in the dark had higher germination than those incubated under white light. Incubation in smoke water, which can stimulate germination of pyrophytic species, resulted in a marginal inhibition of germination compared with imbibition with distilled water.  相似文献

In order to identify suitable Trichogramma strains for mass production and successful control of key lepidopteran pests in paddy fields in the Greater Mekong Subregion, the effects of high temperatures on wasp life history traits were compared among three strains of Trichogramma chilonis Ishii and two strains of Trichogramma ostriniae Pang et Chen, collected from paddy fields in the region. At a rearing temperature of 25 °C, life history traits differed significantly among the five strains tested and the three T. chilonis strains and a T. ostriniae strain were of high performance. When female wasps were exposed to higher temperatures commonly encountered in the region, negative effects were observed on key life history parameters of adult females and their offspring at 34 °C, which became even more serious at 37 °C. In particular, the two T. ostriniae strains were not able to successfully develop to adulthood at all at 37 °C while for the T. chilonis strains adult emergence was significantly reduced. In addition, the emerged offspring females lived only around one day and no parasitism was observed. When the three T. chilonis strains were exposed to 37 °C for 4 to 12 h at prepupal and pupal stages, reflecting heat shocks that the released Trichogramma may experience in the field, adult emergence was significantly reduced after an exposure time of 12 h. In summary, the three T. chilonis strains show a relatively high potential for incorporation in a biological control program in the target region. Our results also highlight that tests at both rearing and field temperatures are necessary in selection of potential Trichogramma strains for an inundative release program where there is significant difference between rearing and field temperatures.  相似文献

Rapid “low-temperature conditioning” and “solute conditioning” of the ice nucleation active bacterium Erwinia herbicola No. 26 are described. Conditioning is the process by which the ability to initiate ice at high temperatures is gained in these bacteria. The cumulative ice nucleator concentration, N[T], was used to measure the number of ice nucleators present in the bacterial systems. N[T] was determined at temperatures from −2 ° to −10 °C and was measured under varying conditioning temperature, time, and solute regimes. Values of N[T] increased rapidly on cooling samples from 30 to 5 °C. The optimum low temperature for conditioning was 5 °C. The conditioning process followed first-order reaction kinetics and time constants (1/rate constant) were between 43 and 62 min at 5 °C. Individual ice nucleators were isolated in droplets and were stable for at least 2 hr. Low-temperature conditioning did not occur when protein synthesis was inhibited by eliminating amino acids in the low-temperature conditioning media or by using the protein synthesis inhibitors chloramphenicol and streptomycin. Analysis of low-temperature conditioning, using heterogeneous ice nucleation theory predicted that ice nucleators are large and have diameters ranging from 80 Å (active at −8 °C) to 300 Å (active at −3 °C). In conclusion, it was predicted that conditioning resulted from growth of the nucleator from about 80 to 300 Å, from a change in the surface properties of 300 Å nucleator making it more similar to ice, or from a combination of these.  相似文献

We conducted three bioassays to evaluate the effect of low-temperature storage of eggs (host) and pupae and adults (parasitoid) on the biology and parasitism capacity of the egg parasitoid Telenomus remus (Nixon) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae). Viable stored Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs were parasitized to the same degree or even higher than fresh eggs when stored until 14 days at 5°C or until 21 days at 10°C. In contrast, the percentage of parasitized sterilized eggs was equal to the control only when stored for 7 and 14 days. Survival of T. remus pupae declined with storage time at both studied temperatures (5 and 10°C). However, after 7 days of storage, survival of pupae was still 86.3 and 64.9% at 10 and 5°C, respectively. The number of adult male survivors remained similar until the fourth storage day at both 5 and 10°C. In contrast, female survival did not differ until day 8 at 10°C or day 6 at 5°C. Parasitism capacity of stored adults was not altered by storage compared with the control. Therefore, we conclude that the maximal storage time at 10°C is 21 days for viable C. cephalonica eggs and 7 days for T. remus pupae, while parasitoid adults should not be stored for more than 4 days at either 5 or 10°C.  相似文献
