On the Kolbeinsey Ridge, north of Iceland, 92 species of peracarid crustaceans were sampled using the epibenthic sledge. For an analysis of the multispecies distribution pattern across the ridge, a total of 46 species have been considered, which occurred at least at two stations and with at least 5% relative abundance at any one station. The analysis revealed four assemblages: a deep species assemblage, an eastern slope assemblage, an ubiquitous species assemblage and a western slope assemblage. The western slope assemblage consists mainly of Amphipoda, which were most abundant and diverse on the western slope. The ubiquitous and eastern slope assemblages, however, are dominated by Isopoda, which also comprised most species and individuals on the eastern slope. Cumaceans were the most representative species of the deep species assemblage. These differences in species composition and abundance can probably be attributed to food supply and sediment composition, rather than to salinity or bottom water temperature.  相似文献

Composition, abundance, and diversity of Crustacea Peracarida were investigated on a transect across the Kolbeinsey Ridge, north of Iceland in summer 1992 during the M21/5 expedition with RV Meteor. This ridge is influenced by both the cold East Greenland Current as well as the warmer East Iceland Current, mixing with warmer Atlantic water. Sampling has been performed using an epibenthic sledge modified after Rothlishberg & Pearcy (1977). Being one of the most important components of the macrobenthic epi- and suprafauna, composition, abundance, and diversity of peracarids was significantly different on western and eastern sides of the slope. Isopoda and Amphipoda were most frequent at all stations, followed by Cumacea and Tanaidacea. Mysidacea have only been sampled on the eastern slope. Abundance and diversity were highest on the two eastern stations in depths of 830–940 meters, values decreased on the deepest eastern station in 1100 meter depth and were also low on both western stations in 830 and 860 meters depth. These differences are probably due to sediment composition and to quality and quantity of organic carbon reaching the seafloor, rather than to differences in salinity or in hydrographic regimes. The high abundance of peracarid crustaceans, especially of epibenthic species, capable of burrowing within the first centimeters of sediment, indicate their high potential of bioturbation and also their importance for benthic carbon cycling.  相似文献

地形异质性通过调控树木生长所需的养分、水分和光照等而成为亚热带森林结构与物种组成的重要驱动因子。但是, 地形异质性对季风常绿阔叶林物种多样性及其分布影响的研究还相对较少。该文基于云南普洱30 hm2森林动态监测样地(大样地) 750个20 m × 20 m的样方调查数据, 以海拔、坡度、凹凸度和坡向4个地形因子为变量, 采用C均值模糊聚类分析大样地的地形类型, 进而分析不同地形条件下的群落物种组成及群落物种多样性; 采用Torus转换检验法, 探讨物种与地形关联性, 为季风常绿阔叶林生物多样性保护提供科学依据。研究结果表明, 大样地可分为山脊、陡坡、缓坡、高谷和沟谷等5类地形, 地形面积分别是8.00、6.04、7.68、2.76和5.52 hm2。大样地中胸径(DBH) ≥ 1 cm的木本植物个体153 418株, 分属79科179属271种。5类地形中, 物种丰富度、不同径级的植株密度和比例明显不同, 多样性及优势物种多度分布具有较大差异。种-面积曲线表明, 同等面积条件下, 随着取样面积增加, 山脊的物种丰富度始终最小, 高谷次之, 沟谷的物种丰富度始终最大。种-个体数累积曲线表明, 随着个体数增加, 山脊物种丰富度的累积速率最小, 种丰富度增加缓慢, 高谷次之。在被检验的123个物种中, 与地形相关的物种有83个, 高达67.5%的物种与至少一类地形存在显著相关关系。山脊和缓坡中与地形具有显著负相关关系的物种数超过显著正相关的物种数; 而与陡坡、高谷和沟谷显著正相关的物种数高于显著负相关的物种数。普洱大样地地形异质性对物种多样性维持的贡献率为7.8%。  相似文献

Species composition, abundance, biomass and spatial distribution pattern of brittle star assemblages of the Kolbeinsey Ridge, north of Iceland, were investigated by analysing seafloor photographs and epibenthic sled catches. Sampling was conducted in July 1992 along a 34 km long cross-ridge transect at 67°55N in depths ranging from 830 to 1100 m. Five brittle star species were found. Only one species, Ophiocten gracilis, occurred with densities of more than 1 ind m–2. Both ridge slopes were characterized by soft bottom habitats, the ophiuroid distribution, however, revealed differences between slopes. Generally, brittle star densities were significantly higher on the eastern slope. There, the highest mean abundance per station of O. gracilis was 497 ind m–2. Except for one station, a distinct patchiness on the 100 m-scale was obvious in the spatial distribution of O. gracilis. Small settling stages with disc diameters <1 mm accounted for up to 98% of the population of O. gracilis near the ridge top, but their abundance share decreased with depth to only 6% on the eastern slope foot. Biomasses of O. gracilis were extrapolated by combining abundances estimated from photographic counts with a size-weight relationship and size frequencies established from sled catches. The highest value (120 mg AFDW m–2) was found on the deep eastern slope where large O. gracilis with disc diameters >4 mm were most abundant. Our findings reflect a cross-ridge gradient in terms of hydrographic regime and, hence, probably pattern of food supply for the benthos.  相似文献

Summary A comparative analysis of the relatively rich shelled gastropod and bivalve fauna of two transects from 200 to 2,000 m in the eastern Weddell Sea was done by trawls and multibox corer. Related to the unusual shelf topography, a characteristic pattern of abundance and species richness with depth and location is evidenced. Highest values of species richness are observed near the ice-shelf edge and from the rise of the shelf to some 800 m on the slope, and lowest values between 300 and 600 m on the inner slope. This anomalous pattern, not followed by the biomass, is interpreted as a consequence of both historical factors (problems of colonization of the shelf) and present food supply. Most of the species are eurybathic and eurytopic. Generally speaking, assemblages are patchy but tend to be arranged by depth zones.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

The landward distributions of 69 plankton and 92 micronektonspecies over the west Florida continental shelf were examinedin relation to their vertical distribution in the eastern Gulfof Mexico. Using linear and power-curve regressions, it wasfound that extent of landward occurrence is significantly correlatedwith bottom topography in terms of bottom depth and distancefrom the open Gulf. Epipelagic plankton species were distributedconsiderable distances across the shelf whereas the mesopdagicshrimp and fish species were not found landward of slope stations.Possible factors affecting landward distribution, such as currents,vertical migration patterns, and predation, are discussed.  相似文献

Residents within any community can affect the larval settlement of both their own and other species. In marine sessile communities resident adults can affect larval settlement by preying on settling larvae, removing or adding space for the larvae to colonize, or stimulating or prohibiting larval settlement on available substratum nearby. To examine those processes by which residents affect settlement, we exposed experimental substrata with three densities of adults of a single species at a site in eastern Long Island Sound, USA for a 24-h period. Four species of common ascidians, Botryllus schlosseri (Pallas), Botrylloides diegensis Ritter and Forsyth, Diplosoma macdonaldi Herdman, and Molgula manhattensis (De Kay), were used in 11 separate experiments. Few individuals of any species settling attached to the surfaces of these species and this resulted in the main effect of these residents being the usurpation of space and the restricting of settlement to unoccupied areas. A model is also presented to explain the apparent aggregated settlement of several species in open areas adjacent to the resident ascidians. From this model we suggest that the aggregated settlement can result from limited larval mobility such that some larvae that contact and reject the resident species as settlement sites may subsequently contact open surfaces of the same substratum and increase settlement densities there over those observed on control substrata. Finally, settlement data for several species indicate that Molgula may influence settlement by preying on larvae.  相似文献

山地是高寒草甸的主要分布区,地形变化引起了土壤温湿度和物种的差异性分布,进而影响到草地生态系统生产功能。为明晰高寒草甸山地环境因子(土壤温湿度)和物种多样性(丰富度、多度、均匀度、优势度)与初级生产力的关系,本研究以青藏高原东北缘马牙雪山支脉的高寒草甸山体为研究对象,选择阶地、阴坡、山脊和阳坡与3个海拔梯度段,调查了189个样方的植物群落组成和土壤温湿度。采用线性回归法分析土壤温湿度和物种多样性与初级生产力之间的关系。结果表明:(1)以山地高寒草甸整体为研究单元,初级生产力只随物种多度的增加而显著增加(R~2=0.07 P=0.01)。(2)坡向影响初级生产力的因素不同,阴坡初级生产力与物种丰富度正线性相关;山脊初级生产力与土壤湿度正线性相关,也随物种丰富度增加而显著增加;阳坡初级生产力与物种多度正线性相关;阶地初级生产力随均匀度增加而显著增加,随优势度增加而显著降低。(3)只有低海拔区(2860-2910 m)初级生产力随物种多度和丰富度的增加而显著增加。综上所述,山地高寒草甸土壤温湿度和物种多样性与初级生产力关系受坡向比海拔的影响更大,且物种多样性对初级生产力的影响大于土壤温湿度。建议山地高寒草甸生态系统生产和生态管理过程中要重点考虑坡向对植物多样性和初级生产力的影响。  相似文献

The discovery of hydrothermal vents along the Galapagos Rift in 1977 opened up one of the most dynamic and productive research themes in marine biology. In the intervening 25 years, hydrothermal vent faunas have been described from the eastern, northeastern and western Pacific, the mid-Atlantic Ridge and the Indian Ocean in the region of the Rodriguez Triple Junction. In addition, there is evidence of hydrothermal signals from the Gakkel Ridge in the Arctic, the central and southwest Indian Ridges and the Scotia Arc in Antarctica. Although often perceived as a continuous linear structure, there are many discontinuities that have given rise to separate biogeographic provinces. In addition, the intervening 25 years have seen a massive increase in our understanding of the biological processes at hydrothermal vents. However, how vents are maintained, and how new vents are colonised has been relatively poorly understood until recently. This review addresses the known larval development of vent-endemic invertebrates. The distribution of larvae in relation to the hydrothermal plume, and the ocean ridge in general, are discussed and the experimental evidence of larval longevity and transport are discussed using such variables as gene flow and larval development rates. The concept of larval dispersal along the mid-ocean ridge is discussed in relation to dispersal barriers and relates the known biogeography of hydrothermal vent systems to both local and evolutionary processes.  相似文献

A comparative study of relationships between stream acidity and bacteria, macroinvertebrates, and fish in the Adirondack Mountains of upper New York state and in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains of eastern Tennessee, USA, was conducted. Although the study sites in both regions spanned a pH range from approximately 4.5 to 6.4, considerably greater seasonal variability in pH and higher monomeric Al concentrations characterized the Adirondack sites. Relationships between several biological characteristics and stream water acidity were similar in both regions, including lower production of epilithic bacteria and bacteria on decomposing leaves, lower leaf decomposition rates, lower density and generic richness of scraper/grazer macroinvertebrates, particularly Ephemeroptera, and lower fish abundance and survival in more acidic streams. Densities of total macroinvertebrates and densities of macroinvertebrates and bacteria inhabiting or closely associated with stream sediments were generally not related to stream water acidity.Regional differences occur in some of the relationships between biological characteristics and stream water acidity. Negative correlations between bacterial production on rocks and pH, between bacterial production on decomposing leaves and pH, and between densities of Ephemeroptera and scrapers and pH were stronger in the Adirondacks than in the Southern Blue Ridge. Higher Al concentrations in the Adirondacks may be responsible for the stronger relationships with pH there. The steeper slopes of the relationships between Ephemeroptera density and all forms of Al in the Adirondacks compared with the Southern Blue Ridge suggests that there may be some adaptation among a few acid/aluminum-tolerant species in the seasonally more constant acidic Southern Blue Ridge streams. Fish bioassays indicated longer survival times in acidic streams in the Adirondacks compared with the Southern Blue Ridge, but these results may be an artifact associated with the use in the Southern Blue Ridge of rainbow trout as the test species which is known to be more acid sensitive compared with brook trout, the test species used in the Adirondacks.  相似文献

土壤线虫是地下食物网的重要组成部分, 在生态系统能量流动和物质循环中起着至关重要的作用。大量研究报道了肥力等土壤环境对土壤线虫物种多样性及各功能群多度的影响, 而我们对土壤线虫功能多样性如何响应土壤环境变化依然知之甚少。本研究以群落水平个体大小和个体大小多样性表征土壤线虫功能多样性。在青藏高原高寒草甸选择3个研究点, 调查和分析了不同生境(沟底平地、阴坡、阳坡和山顶)土壤线虫物种多样性、各功能群多度和功能多样性及其与土壤理化因子和植物多样性的关系。结果表明: (1)土壤线虫个体多度和物种多样性在阳坡最高, 随土壤pH值和土壤总磷增加而升高; 而基于个体大小的土壤线虫功能多样性主要受土壤养分影响, 随土壤总氮和有机质增加而增加, 随土壤总磷含量增加而减少; (2)食细菌和食真菌线虫多度在沟底最高, 植食与捕食杂食线虫多度在山顶最低; 除捕食杂食线虫外, 各功能群多度也主要随土壤磷增加而升高; 除食真菌线虫外, 各功能群多度随植物物种丰富度的增加而减少。本研究强调了土壤线虫物种和功能多样性受不同土壤环境因子的影响, 丰富了土壤线虫多样性研究的内容, 为理解高寒草甸土壤动物多样性形成、维持和变化提供了更广阔的 视角。  相似文献

There is a growing body of evidence that suggests the effective functioning of marine reserves is dependent on the dispersal and recruitment of larvae. Enhanced production inside reserves is predicted to lead to a net larval export and increased settlement and recruitment outside reserve boundaries. However, larval retention in bays is also well documented. Since bays are increasingly being used as reserve areas, planktonic larvae of benthic marine invertebrates were sampled from two semi-enclosed marine reserves during flood and ebb tides to determine whether these bays are acting as net exporters of larvae. Neither reserve was a net importer or exporter of species richness, larval abundance or diversity, although one reserve showed a small export of species richness during the hours of darkness. Both reserves balanced the net import of some species with a net export of others, which was generally related to adult or larval abundance, although exceptions were found in one reserve. Significant effects of light were found, with the net import or export of some species occurring exclusively during either the hours of daylight or darkness. Many marine organisms spend the early life history stages in neuston domain. Although the importance of ichthyoneuston, few studies were developed in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. Therefore, this study aimed to improve the knowledge on ichthyoneuston of the Brazilian coast analyzing the vertical stratification and horizontal distribution of these organisms. Neuston samples were collected in daylight between 20°S and 23°S from February to April 2009 (late summer/early autumn; rainy season) and from August to September 2009 (late winter/early spring; dry season). Eggs of six taxa were identified: Anguilliformes, Engraulidae, Clupeidae, Synodontidae, Trichiuridae, and Maurolicus stehmanni (Sternoptychidae). The neustonic larval fish assemblage was composed by 40 families and 63 species. Mullidae and Myctophidae larvae were the most abundant in the rainy period while Mullidae and Mugilidae dominated in the dry season. Seasonal and spatial variation of larval fish assemblages in the neuston were structured by oceanographic features. The larval fish abundance on the outer slope stations may have been favored by the advection of an anticyclone that encompassed most of the study region during the cruise periods. In the rainy season, salinity and local depth structured the larval fish assemblage in a cross‐shelf gradient, while in the dry season the larval assemblage was structured around temperature and north‐south gradient. In the dry season, the cross‐shelf gradient was less pronounced mainly because of the low abundance and frequency of mesopelagic larvae. The low frequency and abundance of some species are probably related to the net avoidance of fish larvae during the day or dial vertical migration, as many species migrate to deeper layers during the day and ascend to neuston only at night. Nevertheless, the present study presented baseline information about the seasonal and spatial variation of the neustonic larval fish assemblage influenced by the oceanographic conditions in the Campos Basin. We recommend to additionally collect night samples to decrease larval escapement rates and to compare night versus day catches to further investigate the influence of daily migration in the neustonic larval fish in the area.  相似文献

Fish, like other animals, choose environments for reproduction that are favorable for their offspring’s initial development. For example, these environments may be chosen to provide shelter and food. This study examined the fish larvae inhabiting the Ivinheima River sub-basin. The study aimed to (i) characterize the taxonomic composition of the larval fish fauna, (ii) analyze the structure of the larval assemblage, and (iii) verify the relationship between the larval assemblages and environmental variables. The sampling areas included three environments: the Ivinheima River, the Finado Raimundo Lagoon and the Patos Lagoon. Sampling was performed between October 2002 and March 2006 during four reproductive periods (RPs). The data were analyzed with correspondence analysis (CA) and canonical correlation analysis (CCA). A total of 120 619 larvae were collected. These larvae belonged to several species characterized by different reproductive strategies. Our results showed differences between the composition of the Ivinheima River’s assemblages, where there were more larvae of migratory fish, and the lagoons, where larvae of sedentary species were predominant. In addition, differences were found among the RPs evaluated in the Ivinheima River: the first and second RPs were characterized by milder floods and by a greater abundance of migratory piscivore larvae, whereas the third and fourth RPs had more outflow and a greater abundance of larvae of detritivore and omnivore species. We conclude that the Ivinheima River plays a significant role in the maintenance of native migratory fish stocks in the upper Paraná River basin and that the environment shows a segregation of the spatial and temporal composition and abundance of larvae related to running and flooding/standing water.  相似文献

The hemi-pelagic Tafilalt Ridge separating the Maider Basin from the Tafilalt Basin developed progressively from an Early Devonian homoclinal ramp, through a Middle Devonian ramp-slope stage of moderate topography, to a mature cephalopod ridge during the Late Devonian and formed a spur-like element extending from the southern shallow-water Maider Platform to the broader northern hemi-pelagic Tafilalt Platform. During the Middle Devonian, thick lowstand aprons were shed onto the ridge-slope from an active mid-ramp carbonate factory in the south (Maider Platform). The shallow-water derived sediments first by-passed the central paleohigh, but then onlapped the ridge during start of sea-level rise. The allodapic limestones (storm-induced turbidites, tempestites, and debrites) of the aprons consist of large parts or entirely of reworked lithic peloids. The lithic peloids are interpreted as the main foundation of all micritic lithofacies types in the distal ramp locations, including those on the hemi-pelagic cephalopod ridge. Lateral facies transition of allodapic limestones into nodular cephalopod limestones on the ridge suggests the latter originate from allodapic beds and were subsequently transformed into nodular limestones by bioturbation, early diagenesis, and the faunal input from a hemi-pelagic community. Iron-rich hardgrounds formed on the ridge during major regressive phases as a result of increased winnowing by the wave-base and correlate with siliciclastic turbidite deposition on the slope. The hardgrounds can be correlated with hiatuses on the Tafilalt Platform, which formed a broader hemi-pelagic swell to the north. During the Late Devonian, the southern Maider Basin carbonate factory became unproductive or disappeared, and a ridge facies of truly hemi-pelagic autochthonous limestones developed. Allodapic deposits on the slope were shed from the ridge itself at this time but did not form well-defined aprons.  相似文献

Fish eggs and larvae were collected monthly between September 1987 and April 1989 from sites throughout the main basin and within the saline regions of the two main tributary rivers of Wilson Inlet, a seasonally closed estuary in south-western Australia. Of the eggs, 43.7% belonged to Engraulis australis (Shaw) and the rest to unidentified teleosts. The larval fish assemblage comprised 17 families represented by 25 species. The Gobiidae contained the highest number of species (four) and contributed approximately 57% of all larvae caught. Pseudogobius olorum (Sauvage) and E. australis were the most abundant species, contributing 43.9 and 27.9% to the total larval catch, respectively. The larvae of species which breed within Wilson Inlet dominated the assemblage, both in terms of number of species (64%) and contribution to total catch (99.9%). The numbers of the eight marine species and one freshwater species represented in the ichthyoplankton were very low. Classification and multi-dimensional scaling ordination showed that the composition of the larval fish fauna at the various sites during a period when the estuary remained open to the sea (December 1988-April 1989) was similar to that of the corresponding sites during the same period in the previous year when the estuary had become closed (December 1987-April 1988). This can be attributed to the spatial distribution, time of occurrence and abundance of estuarine-spawned larvae being similar in the two periods and to the rarity of marine-spawned larvae, even in the spring and summer of 1988/1989 when the estuary was open for the whole time when most marine teleosts spawn in south-western Australia. The low occurrence of marine-spawned larvae in Wilson Inlet reflects the fact that tidal water movement within the basin of the system is so small that it is unable to facilitate the transport and dispersion of larvae. The ichthyoplankton of Wilson Inlet resembles that of other poorly-flushed estuaries in that it is low in species richness and dominated by estuarine-spawned larvae.  相似文献

 根据对三峡大老岭地区山地常绿落叶阔叶林林隙的调查结果,运用多种方法定量分析和检验了5种地形要素对林隙和3类林隙形成木(GM)各方面特征的空间格局的影响。结果反映了地形对林隙时空格局的影响,和不同类型林隙形成木的响应特征:1)林隙干扰随海拔上升、坡度增大、坡位从山脊到沟谷、坡形由凸到凹而加剧;坡向影响的规律不明显。林隙特征对各地形因素梯度有显著的响应,其中扩展林隙面积、林隙高度、GM数量、种数以及平均胸径是反映地形影响的敏感指标。2)GM的平均胸径、最大胸径和扩展林隙面积与海拔显著正相关;GM平均胸径还与坡位正相关;GM数量沿N→S的坡向梯度减少,而随坡度增大及坡形由凹转凸而增加;GM种类沿坡度和坡形梯度有相同的变化趋势。林隙高度(亦即植被高度)随海拔和坡度增大而减小,但随坡位上升而增大。地形要素对林隙高度和GM平均胸径的空间格局的贡献最大,分别达到75.9%和67.0%。3)折干特征的空间格局受海拔和坡位的显著影响;枯立木的分布特征主要受小地形的坡位和坡形控制;影响翻倒木的最根本地形因素是坡度。  相似文献

Chemosynthetic ecosystems are distributed worldwide in fragmented habitats harbouring seemingly highly specialized communities. Yet, shared taxa have been reported from highly distant chemosynthetic communities. These habitats are distributed in distinct biogeographical regions, one of these being the so‐called Atlantic Equatorial Belt (AEB). Here, we combined genetic data (COI) from several taxa to assess the possible existence of cryptic or synonymous species and to detect the possible occurrence of contemporary gene flow among populations of chemosynthetic species located on both sides of the Atlantic. Several Evolutionary Significant Units (ESUs) of Alvinocarididae shrimp and Vesicomyidae bivalves were found to be shared across seeps of the AEB. Some were also common to hydrothermal vent communities of the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge (MAR), encompassing taxa morphologically described as distinct species or even genera. The hypothesis of current or very recent large‐scale gene flow among seeps and vents was supported by microsatellite analysis of the shrimp species Alvinocaris muricola/Alvinocaris markensis across the AEB and MAR. Two nonmutually exclusive hypotheses may explain these findings. The dispersion of larvae or adults following strong deep‐sea currents, possibly combined with biochemical cues influencing the duration of larval development and timing of metamorphosis, may result in large‐scale effective migration among distant spots scattered on the oceanic seafloor. Alternatively, these results may arise from the prevailing lack of knowledge on the ocean seabed, apart from emblematic ecosystems (chemosynthetic ecosystems, coral reefs or seamounts), where the widespread classification of endemism associated with many chemosynthetic taxa might hide wider distributions in overlooked parts of the deep sea.  相似文献

Abstract

Local differences in species richness and abundance of buprestid beetles were studied at the microsite “Evolution Canyon”, Lower Nahal Oren, Mt. Carmel, Israel, a model conceived for studying biodiversity evolution in a microcosm of life in nature. 39 species were collected at the microsite, and species richness was higher on the more arid and microclimatically stressful and variable south-facing slope than on the milder, more humid and relatively homogeneous north-facing slope. The interslope differences in abundance were significant in five species. New larval host plants were added for nine species, as well as new data about the regional distribution of buprestid beetles. The results support earlier conclusions in various groups of organisms across phylogeny.  相似文献

Deep-sea hydrothermal vent animal communities along oceanic ridges are both patchy and transient. Larval dispersal is a key factor in understanding how these communities function and are maintained over generations. To date, numerical approaches simulating larval dispersal considered the effect of oceanic currents on larval transportation over hundreds of kilometers but very seldom looked at the effect of local conditions within meters around chimneys. However, small scale significant variations in the hydrodynamics may influence larval fate in its early stages after release, and hence have a knock-on effect on both dispersal and colonization processes. Here we present a new numerical approach to the study of larval dispersal, considering small scales within the range of the biological communities, called “bio-hydrodynamical” scale, and ranging from a few centimeters to a few meters around hydrothermal sources. We use a physical model for the vent based on jet theory and compute the turbulent velocity field around the smoker. Larvae are considered as passive particles whose trajectories are affected by hydrodynamics, topography of the vent chimney and larval biological properties. Our model predicts that bottom currents often dominate all other factors either by entraining all larvae away from the vent or enforcing strong colonization rates. When bottom currents are very slow (), general larvae motion is upwards due to entrainment by the main smoker jet. In this context, smokers with vertical slopes favor retention of larvae because larval initial trajectory is nearly parallel to the smoker wall, which increases the chances to settle. This retention phenomenon is intensified with increasing velocity of the main smoker jet because entrainment in the high velocity plume is preceded by a phase when larvae are attracted towards the smoker wall, which occurs earlier with higher velocity of the main jet. Finally, the buoyancy rate of the larvae, measured to be in the range of , is generally irrelevant unless hydrodynamic conditions are balanced, i.e. if the buoyancy rate is comparable to both the bottom current speed and the local water velocity due to entrainment by close smokers. Overall, our model evidences the strong effect of the release point of larvae on their future entrainment within local fluxes. Larvae released from smoker walls might have an entirely different fate than those released further away in the water column. The latter are not, or less, affected by near-chimney hydrodynamics.  相似文献
