The hydrocarbon constituents of the leaf waxes of eight species of Khaya were analysed for taxonomic purposes using GLC. The leaf waxes contained neither isoalkanes nor alkanes and the bulk of the n-alkanes were in the range of C25 to C33, odd-carbon number compounds predominating. It was found that the percentage composition of the n-alkane constituents of the leaf waxes varied with the age of leaves, young leaves having n-C29 as the most abundant alkane, whereas older leaves had n- C31.  相似文献

A waxy fraction obtained by column chromatography of the essential oil of Cannabis sativa consists of n-alkanes ranging from C9 to C39, 2-methyl and 3-methyl alkanes and some dimethyl alkanes. Forty-two leaf epidermal features in 20 Nigerian species of Ficus, representing three of the four subgenera and four of the seven sections of the genus found in Africa have been examined. Discontinuities in these characters clearly separated the three subgenera studied, namely, Ficus, Sycomorus and Urostigma, and supported the earlier sectional classification of the subgenus Urostigma (i.e. sections Sycidium, Galoglychia and Urostigma). The subsectional boundaries among the members of the section Galoglychia studied, however, had little backing from their leaf epidermal characteristics due to extensive overlap of the features. The results of the present studies support the genetic basis of the qualitative and quantitative variations in the leaf epidermal cells, stomata and trichomes in the Nigerian Ficus and the present and potential applications of these features in diagnostic and taxonomic investigations in the genus are discussed.  相似文献

The composition of the cuticular n‐alkanes isolated from the leaves of nine populations of Juniperus deltoides R.P.Adams from continental and coastal areas of the Balkan Peninsula was characterized by GC‐FID and GC/MS analyses. In the leaf waxes, 14 n‐alkane homologues with chain‐lengths ranging from C22 to C35 were identified. n‐Tritriacontane (C33) was dominant in the waxes of all populations, but variations between the populations in the contents of all n‐alkanes were observed. Several statistical methods (ANOVA, principal component, discriminant, and cluster analyses) were used to investigate the diversity and variability of the cuticular‐leaf‐n‐alkane patterns of the nine J. deltoides populations. This is the first report on the n‐alkane composition for this species. The multivariate statistical analyses evidenced a high correlation of the leaf‐n‐alkane pattern with the geographical distribution of the investigated samples, differentiating the coastal from the continental populations of this taxon.  相似文献

The alkane and fatty acid composition of the lipid extracts from leaves of 14 populations ofCondalia: C. microphylla f.xanthocarpa, C. microphylla f.erythrocarpa, C. microphylla f.melanocarpa, C. montana, andC. buxifolia, were determined by gas chromatography. Seventeen alkanes and 14 fatty acids were investigated and a predominance of nonacosane, hentriacontane, palmitic and linoleic acids in all species was found.  相似文献

It remains poorly understood how the composition of leaf wax n‐alkanes reflects the local environment. This knowledge gap inhibits the interpretation of plant responses to the environment at the community level and, by extension, inhibits the applicability of n‐alkane patterns as a proxy for past environments. Here, we studied the n‐alkane patterns of five Miconia species and one Guarea species, in the Ecuadorian Andes (653–3,507 m a.s.l.). We tested for species‐specific responses in the average chain length (ACL), the C31/(C31 + C29) ratio (ratio), and individual odd n‐alkane chain lengths across an altitudinally driven environmental gradient (mean annual temperature, mean annual relative air humidity, and mean annual precipitation). We found significant correlations between the environmental gradients and species‐specific ACL and ratio, but with varying magnitude and direction. We found that the n‐alkane patterns are species‐specific at the individual chain length level, which could explain the high variance in metrics like ACL and ratio. Although we find species‐specific sensitivity and responses in leaf n‐alkanes, we also find a general decrease in “shorter” (<C29) and an increase in “longer” (>C31) chain lengths with the environmental gradients, most strongly with temperature, suggesting n‐alkanes are useful for reconstructing past environments.  相似文献

The importance of taking into account behavioural ecology when assessing the impacts of habitat deterioration on threatened species is evaluated. The Seychelles giant millipede (SGM), Sechelleptus seychellarum, is IUCN Red-Listed as “Vulnerable”. Here, we studied the effect of alien bamboo and coconut on the behavioural ecology of this species on Cousine Island, Seychelles. Coconut did not affect SGM density, but negatively affected its foraging behaviour, whereas bamboo negatively affected both its density and foraging behaviour. The SGM showed feeding preferences for Pisonia grandis and Ficus sp. leaf litter types. Alien bamboo and coconut pose a varied threat to the SGM, and their removal and replacement by indigenous forest species (e.g. P. grandis and Ficus sp.) should form part of an island’s restoration programme.  相似文献

When chlorinated alkanes are present as soil or groundwater pollutants, they often occur in mixtures. This study evaluated substrate interactions during the anaerobic reductive dehalogenation of chlorinated alkanes by the type strains of two Dehalogenimonas species, D. lykanthroporepellens and D. alkenigignens. Four contaminant mixtures comprised of combinations of the chlorinated solvents 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), 1,2-dichloropropane (1,2-DCP), and 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA) were assessed for each species. Chlorinated solvent depletion and daughter product formation determined as a function of time following inoculation into anaerobic media revealed preferential dechlorination of 1,1,2-TCA over both 1,2-DCA and 1,2-DCP for both species. 1,2-DCA in particular was not dechlorinated until 1,1,2-TCA reached low concentrations. In contrast, both species concurrently dechlorinated 1,2-DCA and 1,2-DCP over a comparably large concentration range. This is the first report of substrate interactions during chlorinated alkane dehalogenation by pure cultures, and the results provide insights into the chlorinated alkane transformation processes that may be expected for contaminant mixtures in environments where Dehalogenimonas spp. are present.  相似文献

Genetically uniform burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) was grown under field and various controlled-environment conditions to determine whether environment influenced epicuticular alkane, fatty acid, and fatty-alcohol composition of the leaves. Quantity and quality of alkanes, fatty acids, and fatty alcohols were greatly influenced by environmental conditions. Highest light intensity did not result in the largest total long aliphatic carbon-chain production. Generally, long photoperiod and cool temperature were associated with highest long aliphatic carbon-chain production on a leaf area basis. Quantity of the individual alkane, fatty acid, or fatty alcohol classes present under the different growth conditions varied in relation to the leaf metabolic status and not leaf size.  相似文献

Aims: To investigate the alkane‐hydroxylating system of isolate SP2B, closely related to Rhodococcus ruber DSM 43338T and uncharacterized so far for its alkane degradation genes. Methods and Results: Although isolate SP2B and reference strain can grow on by‐products from hexane degradation, the type strain R. ruber was unable, unlike SP2B isolate, to use short‐chain alkanes, as assessed by gas chromatography. Using PCR with specific or degenerated primers, inverse PCR and Southern blot, two alkane hydroxylase encoding genes (alkB) were detected in both bacteria, which is in agreement with their alkane range. The first AlkB was related to Rhodococcus AlkB7 enzymes and contains a nonbulky residue at a specific position, suggesting it might be involved in medium‐ and long‐chain alkane oxidation. The second partial alkB gene potentially belongs to alkB5‐type, which was found in bacteria unable to use hexane. Moreover, a partial P450 cytochrome alkane hydroxylase, thought to be responsible for the hexane degradation, was detected only in the isolated strain. Conclusions: Rhodococcus ruber SP2B should prove to be a promising candidate for bioremediation studies of contaminated sites because of its large degradation range of alkanes. Significance and Impact of the Study: This is the first thorough study on R.ruber alkane degradation systems.  相似文献

Camarea is a South-American endemic genus comprising eight species. In the present work n-alkanes from foliar cuticular waxes of 23 specimens, representing seven species of Camarea were analyzed, aiming at establishing interspecific affinities and evaluating the usefulness of n-alkane distribution as species characteristic. The sampling included also specimens of Peixotoa reticulata and Janusia guaranitica (both Malpighiaceae). The results were used to obtain a phenogram indicating chemical affinities between species. The results are in agreement with morphological similarities among some Camarea species. Intraspecific variability was small, suggesting that n-alkane distribution may be useful for species characterization and establishment of links among Camarea species. The results support the recognition of Camarea triphylla as a synonym of Camarea axillaris and are not coherent with a hybrid condition of a population exhibiting morphological characteristics combining Camarea affinis and Camarea hirsuta, suggesting instead that the individuals analyzed belong either to Camarea hirsuta or a close species. Distribution of n-alkanes is inadequate to distinguish among Malpighiaceae genera: P. reticulata has n-alkane distribution similar to several Camarea species.  相似文献

The latices of only 13 of a total of 46 species of Ficus examined contained appreciable proteolytic activity. Therefore, high proteolytic activity in the latex is not a distinguishing feature of the genus. The latex of F. stenocarpa had the highest specific activity followed closely by the latices of F. carica and F. glabrata. Latices of 6 species of Ficus were examined by chromatography on CM-cellulose and compared with the results obtained for 9 varieties of F. carica. All of the latices were found to contain multiple proteolytic enzymes. Chromatographically, the multiple enzyme components of the several varieties of F. carica were more similar than those of the several species examined. The latices of 16 varieties of F. carica were all different as determined by free boundary electrophoresis although the specific proteolytic activity of the latices was reasonably constant.  相似文献

Morphological characters and the composition of epicuticular leaf n ‐alkanes of two Satureja subspicata Bartl . ex Vis . subspecies (subsp. liburnica ?ili? and subsp. subspicata ) from nine natural populations along Dinaric Alps range were studied. Morphological characters were chosen based on ?ili? ?s subspecies separation. Seventeen n ‐alkane homologues (C19 – C35) were identified using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and GC/flame ionisation detector (FID). The most abundant n ‐alkane in all populations was n ‐nonacosane (C29), followed by n ‐hentriacontane (C31), with the exception of Diva?a population where these two alkanes were co‐dominant. Diversity and variability of n ‐alkane patterns and morphological characters and their relation to different geographic and bioclimatic parameters, including exposure, were analysed by several statistical multivariate methods (PCA, HCA, Discriminant Analysis, Mantel test). These tests showed clear separation of subsp. liburnica from subsp. subspicata , even though population Velebit showed separation from other subsp. liburnica populations based on phytochemical characters. Mantel test showed high correlation with geographical distribution in both investigated data sets. High correlation between morphological and phytochemical characters was also established. However, exposure can influence n ‐alkane profile, suggesting precaution while taking samples from natural habitats.  相似文献

The psychrotroph Rhodococcus sp. strain Q15 was examined for its ability to degrade individual n-alkanes and diesel fuel at low temperatures, and its alkane catabolic pathway was investigated by biochemical and genetic techniques. At 0 and 5°C, Q15 mineralized the short-chain alkanes dodecane and hexadecane to a greater extent than that observed for the long-chain alkanes octacosane and dotriacontane. Q15 utilized a broad range of aliphatics (C10 to C21 alkanes, branched alkanes, and a substituted cyclohexane) present in diesel fuel at 5°C. Mineralization of hexadecane at 5°C was significantly greater in both hydrocarbon-contaminated and pristine soil microcosms seeded with Q15 cells than in uninoculated control soil microcosms. The detection of hexadecane and dodecane metabolic intermediates (1-hexadecanol and 2-hexadecanol and 1-dodecanol and 2-dodecanone, respectively) by solid-phase microextraction–gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the utilization of potential metabolic intermediates indicated that Q15 oxidizes alkanes by both the terminal oxidation pathway and the subterminal oxidation pathway. Genetic characterization by PCR and nucleotide sequence analysis indicated that Q15 possesses an aliphatic aldehyde dehydrogenase gene highly homologous to the Rhodococcus erythropolis thcA gene. Rhodococcus sp. strain Q15 possessed two large plasmids of approximately 90 and 115 kb (shown to mediate Cd resistance) which were not required for alkane mineralization, although the 90-kb plasmid enhanced mineralization of some alkanes and growth on diesel oil at both 5 and 25°C.  相似文献

Humans have favored the presence of Ficus species within anthropogenic landscapes and near human settlements throughout the planet due to a number of beliefs and for practical purposes. An intimate or mutualistic relationship between Ficus spp and human societies has been suggested but explanations about the motivations of these proximities between humans and Ficus remain very fragmentary. The case study presented in this paper, which was conducted in the sacred hills located in the surroundings of an urban area, Antananarivo, capital city of Madagascar, inhabited by the Merina, aims at finding some answers to the following two questions. To what extent are Ficus species integrated into the ecologies of human groups, understood here as interactions between humans (social, political and economic dimensions)? 2) Do humans introduce Ficus species into new habitats, potentially offering new ecological opportunities? This study builds on initial work conducted in Madagascar in the region of Fianarantsoa in Betsileo rural communities. Results shown in this paper suggest that: 1) the kings of Imerina, the region located in the north-eastern part of the High Plateau of Madagascar, have planted Ficus species abundantly, especially Ficus lutea Vahl and Ficus. polita Vahl, to claim ownership upon new territories of the Imerina and symbolically establish their political hegemony. Marriages with women from non-Merina cultural groups, such as the Sakalava inhabiting the Western Coast, and the use of Ficus species as symbols of power has contributed, with other activities, to the unification process of Madagascar; 2) The ecological distribution of F. lutea has been substantially manipulated by people from Imerina by planting this species quite abundantly in the sacred hills surrounding Antananarivo, an area where this species is at its ecological limit of distribution and also in faraway places such as the Western coast where the tree is not naturally distributed.  相似文献

Background

The interaction between insects and plants takes myriad forms in the generation of spectacular diversity. In this association a species host range is fundamental and often measured using an estimate of phylogenetic concordance between species. Pollinating fig wasps display extreme host species specificity, but the intraspecific variation in empirical accounts of host affiliation has previously been underestimated. In this investigation, lineage delimitation and codiversification tests are used to generate and discuss hypotheses elucidating on pollinating fig wasp associations with Ficus.

Results

Statistical parsimony and AMOVA revealed deep divergences at the COI locus within several pollinating fig wasp species that persist on the same host Ficus species. Changes in branching patterns estimated using the generalized mixed Yule coalescent test indicated lineage duplication on the same Ficus species. Conversely, Elisabethiella and Alfonsiella fig wasp species are able to reproduce on multiple, but closely related host fig species. Tree reconciliation tests indicate significant codiversification as well as significant incongruence between fig wasp and Ficus phylogenies.

Conclusions

The findings demonstrate more relaxed pollinating fig wasp host specificity than previously appreciated. Evolutionarily conservative host associations have been tempered by horizontal transfer and lineage duplication among closely related Ficus species. Independent and asynchronistic diversification of pollinating fig wasps is best explained by a combination of both sympatric and allopatric models of speciation. Pollinator host preference constraints permit reproduction on closely related Ficus species, but uncertainty of the frequency and duration of these associations requires better resolution.  相似文献

While Ficus present a series of traits often associated with dioecy, the prevalence of dioecy in Ficus is atypical. In Asian floras, dioecious Ficus species generally outnumber monoecious ones. Further this is also true in relatively northerly locations for Ficus such as the island of Taiwan. Ficus are pollinated by species-specific wasps that use fig flowers as breeding sites. In dioecious fig species, pollinators develop only in the inflorescences of male fig trees. In this study, we investigated the reproductive phenology of four dioecious Ficus species with distinct ecologies in several locations in northern and southern Taiwan. The two first species (Ficus erecta and Ficus septica) were investigated in four locations. Reproductive phenology was quite different among sites, even within a single species. For example, F. erecta presented well-defined crops at the population level in its usual high-elevation habitat but continuous fig production at low elevations, especially in South Taiwan. The two other fig species (Ficus pedunculosa var. mearnsii and Ficus tinctoria subsp. swinhoei), are shrubs growing together along seashores in exposed locations on coral reef remnants. These two species presented quite different traits allowing the survival of pollinating wasp populations. Ficus pedunculosa var. mearnsii produced figs continuously so that fresh receptive figs were always available for the pollinating wasps while F. tinctoria subsp. swinhoei extended the period of receptivity of its figs, so that receptive figs that had been waiting for pollinating wasps were almost always available. In summary, dioecious figs in Taiwan showed remarkable variation in their phenology, within species among locations or among species within location. Nevertheless, despite this variation, the phenology of the trees always allowed survival of pollinating wasp populations. Dioecious figs seem to have adopted a differentiated set of strategies which result in high resilience of pollinator populations. This resilience could help explain the atypical prevalence of dioecy in Ficus.  相似文献

Foliar epicuticular waxes of specimens of 13 Croton species native in Brazil were extracted. The fractions containing alkanes and primary alcohols were isolated by preparative thin layer chromatography. Derivatized n-primary alcohols were identified by gas chromatography (GC) coupled with mass spectrometry and n-alkanes by GC and comparison with known standards. Relative abundances were estimated by GC coupled with flame ionization detector. The distribution of constituents of both classes was analyzed by cluster analysis, using the UPGMA method and Euclidean distances. The chemical affinities among species were compared with published data of molecular phylogenetic relationships. The distribution of n-alkanes and primary alcohols were shown to be useful markers of Croton species. Primary alcohols were more consistent than n-alkanes for species fingerprinting.  相似文献
