Parasites as predators: unifying natural enemy ecology   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Parasitism and predation have long been considered analogous interactions. Yet by and large, ecologists continue to study parasite-host and predator-prey ecology separately. Here we discuss strengths and shortcomings of the parasite-as-predator analogy and its potential to provide new insights into both fields. Developments in predator-prey ecology, such as temporal risk allocation and associational resistance, can drive new hypotheses for parasite-host systems. Concepts developed in parasite-host ecology, such as threshold host densities and phylodynamics, might provide new ideas for predator-prey ecology. Topics such as trait-mediated indirect effects and enemy-mediated facilitation provide opportunities for the two fields to work together. We suggest that greater unification of predator-prey and parasite-host ecology would foster advances in both fields.  相似文献

The species of flies breeding in bovine manure, their parasites and predators as well as other associated arthropods in 3 localities in and near Bangalore are recoreded. The flies areMusca domestica L.,Musca pattoni Austen,Stomoxys calcitrans L.,Physiphora aenea F.,Physiphora demandata F.,Sargus metallinus F.,Sepsis thoracica R.-D.,Sepsis nitens Wiedemann,Sphaerocera scabricula Hal, andLeptocera (Coproica) hirtula Rondani. Four species of hymenopterous pupal parasites of these flies have been obtained:Spalangia cameroni Perkins from pupae ofM. domestica, M. pattoni, S. calcitrans, P. aenea andP. demandata; Spalangia endius Walker from pupae ofM. domestica, M. pattoni andS. calcitrans; Spalangia nigroaenea Curtis from pupae ofM. domestica andS. calcitrans; andDirhinus trichiophthalmus Masi from pupae ofSargus metallinus F. Percentage parasitism of fly puparia in field samples was noted. Four species ofHister andAleochara puberula Klug feeding on various immature stages ofM. domestica, 2 species of scarabaeid beetles, 2 species of ants and a pseudoscorpion were also found in the manure. The importance of biotic regulatory factors in the control of flies is discussed.
Résumé Dans 3 localités de Bangalore ou proches de cette ville, on a inventorié les espèces de mouches vivant dans le fumier de vache, leurs parasites et prédateurs ainsi que d'autres arthropodes associés. Les mouches récoltées sont:Musca domestica L.,Musca pattoni Austen,Stomoxys calcitrans L.,Physiphora aenea F.,Physiphora demandata F.,Sargus metallinus F.,Sepsis thoracica R-D.,Sepsis nitens Wiedemann,Sphaerocera scabricula Hal. etLeptocera (Coproica) hirtula Rondani. Quatre espèces d'hyménoptères parasites des pupes ont été obtenues de ces mouches:Spalangia cameroni Perkins deM. domestica, M. pattoni, S. calcitrans, P. aenea etP. demandata: Spalangia endius Walker deM. domestica, M. pattoni etS. calcitrans, P. aenea etP. demandata; Spalangia endius Walker trans; etDirhinus trichiophthalmus Masi deSargus metallinus F. On a noté le taux de parasitisme des nymphes dans les conditions naturelles. Quatre espèces deHister etAleochara puberula Klug s'attaquant aux divers stades non imaginaux deM. domestica, 2 espèces de scarabeides, 2 espèces de fourmis et un pseudoscorpion ont été également trouvés dans le fumier. L'importance de ces facteurs biotiques dans la régulation des populations de mouches est discutée.

Hypertension is one of the major risk factor of cardiovascular diseases, but after a century of clinical and basic research, the discrete etiology of this disease is still not fully understood. One reason is that blood pressure is a quantitative trait with multifactorial determination. Numerous genes, environmental factors as well as epigenetic factors should be considered. There is no doubt that although the full manifestation of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases usually occurs predominantly in adulthood and/or senescence, the roots can be traced back to early ontogeny. The detailed knowledge of the ontogenetic changes occurring in the cardiovascular system of experimental animals during particular critical periods (developmental windows) could help to solve this problem in humans and might facilitate the age-specific prevention of human hypertension. We thus believe that this approach might contribute to the reduction of cardiovascular morbidity among susceptible individuals in the future.  相似文献

Availability of aphid prey in habitat is often heterogeneous in space and time and its deprivation causes severe effects on life attributes of ladybird predators. Sometimes ladybirds locate high prey biomass while on certain occasions prey biomass may be either medium/low or altogether absent. Present study has been designed in view of three prey biomass conditions in nature, viz. low, medium and high, selecting Coccinella septempunctata and Coccinella transversalis as experimental ladybirds. Results revealed that consumption, developmental and reproductive attributes of both ladybirds changed in response to prey availability. On high prey biomass larvae had higher consumption and growth rates, developed faster and had low mortality, while emerging adults were large in size, had high consumption rates and utilized prey biomass maximally on production of eggs, self maintenance and survival. In contrast low prey biomass reduced chances of larval survival and emerging adults were small in size, had poor prey consumption rates, low fecundity, egg fertility and short life span. Females exhibited triangular fecundity and egg fertility functions and plateau shaped prey consumption rate function with age, indicating towards their highest reproductive performance during middle age on three prey biomasses; being highest on high prey biomass. On three prey biomasses, females had higher body biomass conversion efficiency during pre- and post-oviposition periods and higher egg biomass conversion efficiency during oviposition period; being highest on high prey biomass. Thus middle aged ladybirds reared on high prey biomass may suppress pest populations better than those reared on low/medium prey biomass.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Sprague's Pipits ( Anthus spragueii ) are one of the least studied birds in North America, with most information about their breeding biology based on anecdotal observations at relatively few nests. I determined the renesting intervals of female Sprague's Pipits in south-central Saskatchewan and also summarized data about incubation and nestling periods of Sprague's Pipits in Saskatchewan and Manitoba to provide more robust estimates of these life-history parameters. Two of eight radio-marked females initiated replacement clutches after failed nesting attempts, with renesting intervals of 11–13 and 15–16 d, respectively. Of 74 banded females, 3 were subsequently recaptured at later nests during the same breeding season. Nests of two of these females failed due to inclement weather and their renesting attempts were initiated 6 and 7–11 d later, respectively. The third female successfully fledged young and then initiated another nest 17 d later. The new nests of females that renested were all located less than 150 m from previous nests. Incubation and nestling periods for known-aged nests ranged from 12 to 15 d (13.4 ± 0.3 [SE], N = 9) and 11 to 14 d (12.1 ± 0.2, N = 39), respectively. Variation in the length of both incubation and nestling periods was likely a function of prolonged periods of inclement weather. More data are required to determine the extent of renesting in different habitats and the extent to which Sprague's Pipits are capable of successfully raising multiple broods in a single breeding season.  相似文献

Phyllopod populations were monitored in three temporary pools differing in the amount of submerged, peripheral vegetation present, surface area and duration. The effects of these factors on the life history strategies employed by phyllopods were investigated. Triops granarius, various conchostracan species and the anostracan Branchipodopsis sp. inhabited the periphery of two pools where rooted, submerged vegetation was abundant while three Streptocephalus species dominated the central, unvegetated regions of the pools and the unvegetated pool. This distribution pattern appeared to be related to the animals' morphology and feeding habits. The peripheral regions of the pools were stressful habitats since they were colonized by large numbers of predators and competitors 30–40 days after inundation and they dried out sooner than the centre. The peripheral species exhibited typical r-selected life history strategies; they grew rapidly, reproduced early and had short lifespans and in this way they overcame the threats presented by their habitat. The central species took advantage of their predator-free, more stable habitat and exhibited life history patterns which tended towards the K-end of the r-K continuum. A degree of intraspecific variation in growth and reproduction was obvious and appeared to be related to differences in habitat duration of the three pools.  相似文献

The absolute (in min.) and relative (in the number of tau0) duration of the periods of cleavage, epiboly and that between the onset of gastrulation and the stage of 10 pairs of somites were determined in Cyprinus carpio L., Misgurnus fossils L., Esox lucius L. and Coregonus peled Gmel. at different constant temperatures. The stability of the dimensionless characteristics for the duration of each of these periods in the species in question within the limits of optimum temperatures was shown. A comparison of the relative duration of the same periods of early embryogenesis in C. carpio, M. fossilis, E. lucius, Salmo trutta L. morpha fario and S. gairdneri Rich. has shown that in the species under comparison the relative durations of the period of synchronous cleavage divisions are similar, whereas those of the period of asynchronous cleavage divisions differ. The relative durations were found to be similar for the period between the onset of gastrulation and the stage of 10 pairs of somites in M. fossilis, E. lucius and 2 species of Salmo. Differences were revealed in the relative duration of the period of epiboly; the average relative rate of the movement of blastoderm cells toward the vegetative pole is similar in the species with the eggs of small size (C. carpio, M. fossilis, Coregonus peled) and increases with the egg size. The temporal relationships between the embryonic periods under study in the species in question and possible mechanism which determine these relationships are considered with respect to the data on egg structure, as well as on the stage when the isolated blastoderm acquires the capacity of differentiation in vitro.  相似文献

There is growing interest in the ecological consequences of fear, as evidenced by the numerous studies on the nonconsumptive, trait-mediated effects of predators. Parasitism, however, has yet to be fully integrated into research on the ecology of fear, despite it having direct negative and often lethal effects on hosts and being the most common life history strategy on the planet. This might at least be partly due to the traditional, but untested, assumption that anti-parasite responses are weak relative to anti-predator responses. To test this hypothesis, we quantified the activity and location responses of Bufo americanus tadpoles to one of six chemical cues: water; cercariae of Echinostoma trivolvis, a trematode which infects and can kill amphibians; a snail releasing E. trivolvis cercariae; an uninfected snail; food; or conspecific alarm chemicals signaling predation. There is also literature encouraging research on the context dependency and pollution-induced disruption of fear responses. Consequently, before quantifying responses to the chemical cues, half of the B. americanus were exposed to the herbicide atrazine (201 μg/l for 4 days), a reported inhibitor of fear responses in fish. Tadpoles were attracted to food, were indifferent to an uninfected snail, avoided alarm chemicals, and exhibited avoidance and elevated activity in response to a snail shedding cercariae and cercariae alone. Atrazine had no detectable effects on B. americanus’ responses to the tested cues despite the use of a higher concentration and longer exposure duration than has been repeatedly shown to inhibit chemical cue detection in fish. The magnitude of anti-parasite and anti-predator responses were qualitatively similar, suggesting that the fear of disease and its ecological consequences could be comparable to that of predation. Consequently, we call for a greater integration of parasites into research on the ecology of fear and trait-mediated indirect effects.  相似文献

As a first step to elucidate a role of N-glycans in development of vertebrates, we analyzed structures of the glycans expressed in early stages of zebrafish embryo. N-glycans were prepared from zebrafish embryos at several developmental stages followed by tagging with a fluorophore, 2-aminopyridine. The labeled glycans were analyzed by two modes of HPLCs. The comparison of the elution profiles of HPLCs unveil the change of the oligosaccharide structure during the development. These peaks were merely detected during 4–7 h after fertilization, however, increased from 12 h, and at 15 h a fairly amount of them was appeared. Structure analysis revealed that they were bianntenary complex-type N-glycans with or without fucose and/or bisecting N-acetylglucosamine residues. These results suggest that the complex-type N-glycans are concerned in some developmental event from segmentation period downward in zebrafish. Published in 2005.  相似文献

The science of parasitology is one of the many new disciplines of the twentieth century, as such it is a dynamic and rapidly evolving science which encompasses an increasing number of sub-disciplines and technologies. However, will the fragmentation involved in current methods of scientific enquiry and the competition for funding mean the decline of certain areas of parasitology or perhaps the complete loss of the discipline. This paper attempts to address these questions by considering the development of the discipline of parasitology especially within Australia and by considering the mechanisms of attaining funding for science. Technological change and its impact on parasitology is also considered, and requirements for maintenance of the discipline and its practitioners are suggested.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Artesunate has been reported to cause embryolethality and malformations when administered orally to rats during organogenesis. The purpose of this study was to determine the most sensitive period(s) for the induction of these effects in order to provide clues about possible mechanisms and to identify a short treatment regimen for further studies. METHODS: Pregnant rats were orally administered artesunate (10, 17 or 30 mg/kg/day) on single or multiple days of gestation. Cesarean sections and fetal evaluations were conducted on Day 21 postcoitum (pc). RESULTS: Embryolethality, cardiovascular malformations and a syndrome of skeletal defects were observed after single doses on days 10 to 14 pc, while no developmental effects were observed before (day 9 pc) or after (days 16 or 17 pc) that period. The most sensitive day for embryo lethality was day 11 pc, where lethality occurred with a very steep dose response (postimplantation loss was ~15% at 10 mg/kg and 100% at 17 mg/kg/day). The most sensitive day for the induction of malformations was day 10 pc. Malformations tended to occur in partially resorbed litters and included cardiovascular defects and bent and misshapen long bones and scapulae. CONCLUSIONS: The sensitive window for developmental toxicity of artesunate in the rat was identified as days 10 to 14 pc. Single oral doses produced embryolethality and similar cardiovascular and skeletal malformations as previously reported in longer term dosing experiments. These single dose treatment regimens could be useful to further investigate the mechanistic basis for artesunate‐induced developmental toxicity. 恒温条件下测定了以茶黄螨(Polyphagotarsonemus latus)为食的黄瓜钝绥螨(Amblyseius cuc-umeris)发育历期与温度的关系。结果表明,黄瓜钝绥螨在18、20、23、25、28、30和31℃温度条件下整个世代的发育历期分别是13.02、9.61、5.96、5.26、4.65、4.78和5.80d,32℃条件下黄瓜钝绥螨卵不能孵化,该螨整个世代最低临界、最适和最高临界发育温度分别为12.77,23.87和33.50℃。  相似文献

本文以苹果绵蚜为繁殖寄主,研究了苹果绵蚜蚜小蜂在不同温度下的发育历期、发育起点温度和有效积温。结果显示:苹果绵蚜蚜小蜂的发育历期随温度的升高而缩短,最适发育温度为21℃-27℃。山东地区越冬代苹果绵蚜蚜小蜂打破滞育的发育起点温度为雌蜂8.58℃,雄蜂8.22℃;有效积温为雌蜂148.72日度,雄蜂154.68日度。非越冬代苹果绵蚜蚜小蜂在卵-羽化阶段发育起点温度为雌蜂5.62℃,雄蜂5.55℃;有效积温为雌蜂284.40日度,雄蜂为295.61日度。并推测了2008年济南地区苹果绵蚜蚜小蜂发生代数和越冬代羽化时间,与实测情况基本相符。  相似文献

The duration of larval and pupal stages of two species of predatory flies was investigated at five constant temperatures. Ilione albiseta (Scopoli): Mean duration of first and second instars was shortest at 23°C and there was 100% survival of first instar larvae at all temperatures. Mean third instar larval duration decreased from 104 days at 17°C to 27.5 days at 26°C. Total percentage larval survival was greatest at 17°C and least at 26°C. Mean pupal duration decreased as temperature increased and this occurred also under outdoor conditions. Pherbellia cinerella (Fallén): As temperature increased mean larval duration decreased but the percentage of larvae pupating also decreased (100% at 14°C, 33.3% at 26°C). There was a trend for shorter mean pupal durations at higher temperatures.
Résumé L'action de la température a été examinée à 14, 17, 20, 23 et 26°C. Les 2 espèces sont prédatrices de L. truncatula, vecteur de la douve du foie en Irlande, où elle provoque à l'àgriculture une perte évaluée à 10 millions de livres par an. Les données recuellies en conditions contrôlées du laboratoire doivent permettre de définir les conditions optimales pour l'élevage continu de ces espèces. Ceci est indispensable pour évaluer, dans la nature leurs potentialités pour la lutte biologique. Ilione albiseta: C'est à 23°C que le développement des larves de premier et second stades sont les plus brefs; la survie du premier stade est totale à toutes les températures constantes examinées. La durée moyenne du 3ème stade décroît de 104 jours à 17°C jusqu'à 27,5 jours à 26°C. Le taux de survie total est plus élevé à 17°C qu'à 26°C. La durée moyenne de la nymphose diminue quand la température croît, et ceci se produit aussi à la température ambiante extérieure. On réduit de moitié la durée du développement de l'éclosion de l'oeuf à l'apparition de l'adulte, entre la nature et le laboratoire, en utilisant respectivement: 23°, 17° et 26°C pour les premier et second stades, le troisième stade, la nymphé. Cela devrait aider à multiplier la souche pour la lutte biologique. Pherbellia cinerella: Avec élévation de la température la durée du développement larvaire diminue, mais aussi le nombre de larves parvenant à la pupaison (100% à 14° et 33,3% à 26°C). La nymphose tendait à être plus brève aux températures les plus élevées.
