1 Metabolic rates (Vo2), body temperature (Tb), and thermal conductance (C) were first determined in newly captured Maximowiczi's voles (Microtus maximowiczii) and Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus campbelli) from the Inner Mongolian grasslands at a temperature range from 5 to 35 °C.

2 The thermal neutral zone (TNZ) was between 25 and 32.5 °C for Maximowiczi's voles and between 25 and 30 °C for Djungarian hamsters. Mean Tb was 37.0±0.1 °C for voles and 36.2±0.1 °C for hamsters. Minimum thermal conductance was 0.172±0.004 ml O2/g h °C for voles and 0.148±0.003 ml O2/g h °C for hamsters.

3 The mean resting metabolic rate within TNZ was 2.21±0.05 ml O2/g h in voles and 2.01±0.07 ml O2/g h in hamsters. Nonshivering thermogenesis was 5.36±0.30 ml O2/g h for voles and 6.30±0.18 ml O2/g h for hamsters.

4 All these thermal physiological properties are adaptive for each species and are shaped by both macroenvironmental and microenvironmental conditions, food habits, phylogeny and other factors.

1. 1. At the preferred body temperature (35°C) resting metabolic rate was 0.155 ± 0.015 ml O2/g·h and heart rate was 54 ± 11 beats/min. Spontaneous activity at this body temperature caused a two-fold increase in heart rate and a six-fold increase in O2 consumption. Maximum values being 0.86 ml/g·h with an O2 pulse of 13.6 × 10−5 ml/g·beat.

2. 2. Pre-treatment for seven days with thyroxine caused a 27% increase in resting metabolic rate and a 63% increase in the thermal gradient between core and ambient temperature at the preferred body temperature.

3. 3. Noradrenaline reduced heart rate but had no effect at the dosage recommended on metabolic rate at body temperatures of either 35 or 15°C, suggesting that non-shivering thermogenesis is absent in lizards. The evolutionary implications of these results have been briefly discussed.

Hypoxia, a dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) below 2 mg l– 1, is a significant stressor in many estuarine ecosystems. Many sedentary organisms, unable to move to avoid hypoxic areas, have metabolic and behavioral adaptations to hypoxic stress. We tested the effects of hypoxia on the behavior and mortality of the clam Macoma balthica, using four levels of dissolved oxygen in flow-through tanks. We used five replicates of each of four treatments: (1) Hypoxic (DO mean ± SE = 1.1 ± 0.06 mg O2 l– 1), (2) Moderately hypoxic (DO 2.6 ± 0.05 mg O2 l– 1), (3) Nearly normoxic (DO 3.2 ± 0.04 mg O2 l– 1), (4) Normoxic (DO = 4.9 ± 0.13 mg O2 l– 1). We lowered the dissolved oxygen with a novel fluidized mud-bed, designed to mimic field conditions more closely than the common practice of solely bubbling nitrogen or other gasses. This method for lowering the DO concentrations for a laboratory setup was effective, producing 1.4 l min–1 of water with a DO of 0.8 mg O2 l– 1 throughout the experiment. The setup greatly reduced the use of compressed nitrogen and could easily be scaled up to produce more low-DO water if necessary. The lethal concentration for 50% of the M. balthica population (LC50) was 1.7 mg O2 l– 1 for the 28-day experimental period. M. balthica decreased its burial depth under hypoxic and moderately hypoxic (~2.5 mg O2 l– 1) conditions within 72 hours of the onset of hypoxia. By the sixth day of hypoxia the burial depth had been reduced by 26 mm in the hypoxic tanks and 10 mm in the moderately hypoxic tanks. Because reduced burial depth makes the clams more vulnerable to predators, these results indicate that the sub-lethal effects of hypoxia could change the rate of predation on M. balthica in the field.  相似文献

Soil cores (35 cm long, 7 cm diameter) from the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute's Sourhope Research Station in the Scottish Borders were kept and monitored at constant temperature (18± 1°C) for gas production using a 1.6 mm diameter stainless steel probe fitted with a membrane inlet and connected to a quadrupole mass spectrometer. This provided a novel method for on-line, real time monitoring of soil gas dynamics. In closed-system headspace experiments, O2 and CO2 (measured at m/z values 32 and 44, respectively) showed anti-phase diurnal fluctuations in low-intensity simulated daylight and under a light-dark (LD, 12:12 h) regime. O2 increased during periods of illumination and decreased in the dark. The inverse was true for CO2 production. Ar (m/z = 40) concentration and temperature (°C) remained constant throughout the experiments. The same phase-related oscillations, in CO2 and O2 concentrations, were observed at 2 and 5 cm depth in soil cores. The O2 concentration did not oscillate diurnally at 10 cm depth. In below-ground experiments, CH4 (m/z = 15) concentration showed diurnal cycles at 2, 5 and 10 cm depth. The CH4 production had the same diurnal phase cycle as CO2 but with lower amplitude. Evidence of below-ground diurnal oscillations in N2 (m/z = 28) concentration was provided at 5 cm depth. The scale of production and consumption of gases associated with soil-atmosphere interactions and below-ground processes, are shown to be a multifaceted output of several variables. These include light, circadian-controlled physiological rhythms of plants and microbes, and the interactions between these organisms.  相似文献

1. 1. The response of oxygen consumption (VO2), thermal conductance (Cd and Cmin, body temperature (Tb), and evaporative water loss (EWL) of Tatera leucogaster and Desmodillus auricularis were measured over the range of ambient temperatures (Ta) from 5–35°C.

2. 2. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) of T. leucogaster was 0.841 ± 0.049 ml O2 g−1 h−1 and lower than predicted, while that of D. auricularis was similar to the expected value (1.220 ± 0.058 ml O2 g−1 h−1). D. auricularis had a high, narrow thermoneutral zone (TNZ) typical of nocturnal, xerophilic, burrowing rodents.

3. 3. D. auricularis and T. leucogaster regulated Tb over the range Ta = 5–35°C and kept EWL and dry thermal conductance at a minimum below the TNZ. However, the EWL of T. leucogaster increased rapidly above Ta = 30°C.

4. 4. After comparison with data from other species, it was concluded that there is an optimum size for xeric, nocturnal, burrowing rodents.

Embryos were collected surgically from superovulated ewes on days 7, 8, 9 and 10 (oestrus=day 0) to evaluate the long-term culture and interferon-tau (IFN-τ) secretion of ovine blastocysts. Embryos were cultured in 2 ml Dulbecco’s modification of Eagle’s medium (DMEM) supplemented with 15 mg/ml BSA in 5% CO2 in air or DMEM without BSA in 5% CO2, 7% O2, and 88% N2 at 39 °C, examined daily for morphological features and diameter and each day placed into fresh culture medium to enable daily measurement of IFN-τ secretion. Nine day-7 and two day-9 embryos were cultured in DMEM with BSA and nine continued to develop. The day-7 embryos reached a mean maximum diameter of 370.0±50.25 μm after 4 days in culture. Nineteen day-7, 12 day-8 and five day-10 embryos were cultured in DMEM without BSA but only six of the day-7 and one day-8 embryos survived for at least 7 days with the former reaching a mean maximum diameter on day 7 of 357±43.75 μm whereas all five day-10 embryos survived for at least 7 days reaching a mean maximum diameter on day 6 of 1038±155.8 μm. An anti-viral assay and a ELISA for IFN-τ were developed. There was a considerable variation in the time of onset and amount of IFN-τ secreted that did not seem to be related to embryo morphology. Of 28 day-7 embryos cultured, 60.7% were secreting IFN-τ after 1 day of culture whereas 87.5% of day-8 embryos were secreting IFN-τ after 1 day in culture. The mean concentration of IFN-τ secreted by day-8 embryos after 1 day in culture (10.99±2.55 ng/ml) was not significantly different to day-7 embryos after 2 days in culture (8.8±1.75 ng/ml).  相似文献

主要探讨冬枣(Ziziphus jujuba Mill.cv Dongzao)在-1℃的动态气调(CA-Ⅰ,70%O2 0%CO2处理7天,然后转入5%O2 0%CO2中)、普通气调(CA-Ⅱ,5%O2 0%CO2;CA-Ⅲ,10%O2 0%CO2)及普通冷藏和常温(25℃)等条件下,果实发病率、色素、可溶性固形物、可滴定酸、乙醇和乙酸乙酯含量等的变化.结果表明:与普通冷藏相比,气调贮藏能减缓果实的腐烂,抑制色素的分解和减少果肉中乙醇、乙酸乙酯的含量.动态高氧处理能有效地保持果实的颜色,抑制色素降解及果皮褐变.CA-Ⅲ(10%O2 0%CO2)能有效地减少果肉乙醇的含量而CA-Ⅱ(5%O2 0%CO2)能有效地减少果肉乙酸乙酯的含量.气调贮藏的果实可滴定酸及可溶性固形物含量与其他处理的果实没有明显的差异.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the responses of the oyster Crassostrea gigas to oxygen levels at subcellular and whole organism levels. Two experiments were carried out. The first experiment was designed to measure the clearance and oxygen consumption rates of oysters exposed at different concentrations of oxygen at 15, 20 and 25°C for 20 h. The goal of this first part was to estimate the hypoxic threshold for oysters below which their metabolism shifts towards anaerobiosis, by estimating the oxygen critical point (PcO2) at 15, 20 and 25°C. The second experiment was carried out to evaluate the metabolic adaptations to hypoxia for 20 days at three temperatures: 12, 15 and 20°C. The metabolic pathways were characterized by the measurement of the enzymes pyruvate kinase (PK) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), the alanine and succinate content and the adenylate energy charge. Respiratory chain functioning was estimated by the measurement of the activity of the electron transport system (ETS). The values of PcO2 were 3.02±0.15, 3.43±0.20 and 3.28±0.24 mg O2 l-1 at 15, 20 and 25°C, respectively. In whole oysters, hypoxia involved the inhibition of PK whatever the temperature, but PEPCK was not stimulated. Succinate accumulated significantly only at 12°C and alanine at 12 and 15°C. A negative relationship between the PK activity and the alanine content was only found in hypoxic oysters. Finally, hypoxia increased significantly the activity of ETS. With high PcO2 values, the metabolic depression occurred quickly, showing that oysters had a low capacity to regulate their respiration when oxygen availability is reduced, particularly in the summer.  相似文献

Light and temperature-response curves and their resulting coefficients, obtained within ecophysiological characterization of gas exchanges at the leaf level, may represent useful criteria for breeding and cultivar selection and required tools for simulation models aimed at the prediction of potential plant behaviour in response to environmental conditions.

Leaf-scale gas exchanges, by means of an IRGA open-flow system, were measured in response to light intensity (8 levels from 0 up to 2000 μmol m−2 s−1), CO2 concentrations (ambient—350 μmol mol−1 and short-term enriched—700 μmol mol−1) and air temperature (from 7 up to 35 °C) on three Vicia faba L. genotypes, each representing one of the three cultivated groups: major, equina and minor. The net assimilation rate response to light intensity was well described by an exponential rise to max function. The short-term CO2 enrichment markedly increased the values of light response curve parameters such as maximum photosynthetic rate (+80%), light saturation point (+40%) and quantum yield (+30%), while less homogenous behaviour was reported for dark respiration and light compensation point. For each light intensity level, the major and minor genotypes studied showed assimilation rates at least a 30% higher than equina.

The positive effects of short-term CO2 enrichment on photosynthetic water use efficiency (WUE) indicate a relevant advantage in doubling CO2 concentration. In the major and minor genotypes studied, similar assimilation rates, but different WUE were observed.

The optimum leaf temperature for assimilation process, calculated through a polynomial function, was 26–27 °C and no relevant limitations were observed in the range between 21 and 32 °C.

Analysis at the single leaf level provided both rapid information on the variations in gas exchange in response to environmental factors and selection criteria for the screening of genotypes.  相似文献

1. 1. The naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is a poikilothermic mammal. During gestation metabolic shifts that differ from both mammalian and reptilian thermoregulatory patterns occurred.

2. 2. Body temperature was directly dependent on ambient temperature. At low ambient temperatures the temperature differential (TbTa) was approximately 3°C, whereas at higher ambient temperatures the temperature differential diminished.

3. 3. In early pregnancy (prior to week 3) oxygen consumption at low ambient temperatures was greater than that of non-reproductive animals. A maximal metabolic rate (3.2 ± 1.0 ml O2 . g−1 . h−1) occurred at an ambient temperature of 27°C. Thereafter the endothermic pattern of metabolism with increasing ambient temperatures was evident. Oxygen consumption decreased with increasing ambient temperature to minimal rates of 1.2 ± 0.1 ml O2 . g−1 . h−1 over the ambient temperature range of 31–34°C.

4. 4. Oxygen consumption in late pregnancy (1.8 ± 0.1 ml O2 . g−1 . h−1) was not correlated with ambient temperature over the entire ambient temperature range measured (24–36°C).

Differences in thermoregulation in early and late pregnancy may be attributed to different rates of heat loss as a consequence of (a) changes in surface area and body mass or (b) vascular changes. Furthermore the thermoregulatory changes in late pregnancy may indicate that maximal overall metabolic capacity had been reached, for peak resting metabolism (expressed per animal rather than per gram body mass) in early pregnancy was similar to observed metabolism in late pregnancy.

6. 6. The dissociation of metabolism from both ambient temperature and body temperature in late pregnancy could confer an energetic advantage to this arid dwelling underground inhabitant; for it may enable the breeding female to partition a greater portion of available energy into reproduction.

1. 1. The thermal death point of the water flea Daphnia magna (age < 24 h, cultured at 20°C) varied considerably depending on the method used. The median lethal dose (LD50), induced by an acute 24 h heat exposure was 34.8°C. It was 37.8°C following a thermal shock for 15 min, and it was 39.4°C when a continuous temperature increase (0.2°C/min) was used.
2. 2. Heat death temperature of daphnids was related to the acute heating rate.
3. 3. The logarithm of median lethal time (Lt50) of daphnids, kept at a constant high temperature, had a linear relationship to temperature (°C) within the range of 28.0–38.5°C.
4. 4. The mortality after heat exposure increased with recovery time at 20°C for up to 3 days.
5. 5. The animals which survived the heat exposure produced eggs and offspring. Furthermore, no time lag in development between the control and heat exposure group was observed.
6. 6. The comparison of the results made by different heat tests categorized to Methods 1 and 2 by Precht (1973), for use in the determination of lethal limits of ectotherms, has been discussed.

为探讨中华姬鼠的生理生态适应特征,对该鼠的代谢率、热传导、体温和蒸发失水等生理生态指标随环境温度从-5℃ ~ 35℃ 的变化进行了测定。结果表明:中华姬鼠的热中性区(TNZ)为20℃ ~ 30℃ ,平均体温为37. 2 ±0.3℃ ,体温在20℃ ~30℃ 范围内维持恒定;基础代谢率为3.17 ±0.08 ml O2 / g· h,最大非颤抖性产热为5.99 ±0.58 ml O2 / g· h,非颤抖性产热范围(最大非颤抖性产热与基础代谢率的比率)为1. 90,平均最小热传导(Cm )为0.16 ± 0.02 ml O2 / g· h℃ ,热中性区内,中华姬鼠的F 值(RMR /Kleiber 期望RMR)/ (C /Bradley 期望C)为1.58 ±0.10,中华姬鼠的蒸发失水随着温度增高而增加,蒸发失水在35℃ 达到峰值,为0.10 ±0.02 mgH2 O/ g· h。这些结果表明中华姬鼠对林地的适应特征是:基础代谢率较高,体温相对较低,最小热传导率与期望值相当,热中性区较宽,下临界温度较低;较高的最大非颤抖性产热和非颤抖性产热范围;蒸发失水在体温调节中占一定地位;这些特征与该物种的生活习性和栖息生境等因素密切相关,也可能是该物种对横断山区的适应对策。  相似文献

In a prospective, randomized, cross-over, placebo-controlled study in healthy male volunteers, we tested the effect of the 5-HT3 antagonist tropisetron on cold-induced oxygen consumption and shivering.

Cooling was performed by intravenous infusion of isotonic salt solution at 4 °C. Whole-body oxygen consumption (VO2) was measured with a metabolic monitor. Shivering was qualitatively assessed. When the shivering score evaluated “2” (intense shivering), 5 mg tropisetron or NaCl 0.9% was injected and repeated if necessary, to completely stop shivering.

The VO2 before shivering (178±9 ml/min/m2) rose significantly during shivering (291±21 ml/min/m2). 5 mg of tropisetron in 2 volunteers and 10 mg in 3 volunteers stopped shivering but it returned (grade 0–1). The VO2 decreased significantly (209±17 ml/min/m2). Placebo had no effect.

Tropisetron reduced cold-induced VO2 and intensity of hypothermic shivering. That an additional dose of tropisetron could not stop the shivering totally may indicate that the effect of tropisetron is not dose dependent.  相似文献

Growth of Gibberella fujikuroi on Amberlite, an inert support, and gibberellic acid (GA3) production was studied in glass columns under different conditions of temperature and water activity (aw). Maximum biomass concentration and GA3 production were respectively 40 (mg/g inert support) and 0.73 (mg/g inert support). While high specific growth rates were obtained, low initial nitrogen resulted in low biomass concentrations. Maximum GA3 (31°C, aw=0.985) was not produced by the maximum concentration of biomass (25°C, aw=0.992). Peaks in the rate curves of either outlet gas, CO2 or O2, occurred on exhaustion of urea indicating, for future works, just when to feed the culture additional nitrogen.  相似文献

以C3作物(小麦, Triticum aestivum和大豆, Glycine max)和C4作物(玉米, Zea mays和千穗谷, Amaranthus hypochondriacus)为例, 探讨了其光下暗呼吸速率降低的原因。结果表明, 2% O2条件下, CO2浓度为0时, 叶室CO2浓度维持在0左右, 而胞间CO2浓度(Ci)显著高于叶室CO2浓度。分析认为这是由于此时植物的暗呼吸仍在正常进行。因此, 该测量条件下的表观光合速率应为CO2浓度为0时的光下暗呼吸速率(Rd)。CO2浓度为0时, 不同光强下的Rd均随光强的升高而降低, 且在低光强(50 μmol·m-2·s-1)和高光强(2000 μmol·m-2·s-1)之间存在显著差异, 说明光强对Rd具有较大影响。在2% O2条件下, 经饱和光强充分活化而断光后, 以上4种作物叶片的暗呼吸速率(Rn)均随着时间的推移而下降, 说明光强并未抑制暗呼吸速率。试验结果表明, Rd的降低是由于CO2被重新回收利用所导致, CO2回收利用率随光强的升高而增大, 从低光强(50 μmol·m-2·s-1)到高光强(2000 μmol·m-2·s-1), 小麦、大豆、玉米和千穗谷的回收利用率范围变动分别为22.65%-52.91%、22.40%-55.31%、54.24%-87.59%和72.43%-90.07%。  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the growth kinetics of Aphanothece microscopica Nägeli under different conditions of temperature, light intensity and CO2 concentration. The growth kinetics of the microorganism and carbon biofixation were evaluated using a central composite design, considering five different temperature levels (21.5, 25, 30, 35 and 38.5 °C), light intensities (0.96, 3, 6, 9 and 11 klux) and carbon dioxide concentrations (3, 15, 25, 50 and 62%). The results obtained showed the effects of temperature, light intensity and CO2 concentration (p < 0.05) on the photosynthetic metabolism of the microorganism. Response surface methodology was adequate for process optimisation, providing a carbon fixation rate to the order of 109.2 mg L−1 h−1 under conditions of 11 klux, 35 °C and 15% carbon dioxide, representing an increase of 58.1% as compared to the conditions tested initially.  相似文献

1. 1. The thermal characteristics of Petrodromus tetradactylus, Elephantulus intufi and E. brachyrhynchus were investigated and compared with other elephant-shrews that occur in the southern African subregion.

E. intufi and E. brachyrhynchus appear to have lower than expected basal metabolic rates (1.1185 ± 0.1623 and 0.9649 ± 0.1638 ml O2 g−1 h−1, respectively) and high, narrow thermoneutral zones, similar to other elephant-shrews investigated previously. In contrast P. tetradactylus has a basal metabolic rate (0.871 ± 0.027 ml O2 g−1 h−1) close to expected for body mass, and a broad, low thermoneutral zone.
3. 3. The thermal biology of macroscelids is discussed in terms of their distribution, microhabitat and body size.
