Fifty nine species of testate amoebae were found in a sphagnum moss bog located in the upper Sura flow (Volga highland). The active diversity in communities of sphagnum moss biotopes was formed by 24 species. Minimal species diversity (3 species) and maximum density of organisms were noted in the driest habitat. In the habitats with the medium humidity levels, the level of species richness was similar (13–16 species) and the total density was determined by redox characteristics of the environment: under the conditions of oxygen deficit, it was two to three times lower than in an oxidized environment. The species composition specificity in sphagnum moss biotopes was determined by the degree of humidity: in the driest habitats, Arcella arenaria predominated; in the biotopes with medium humidity, Nebela tenella and Hyalosphenia elegans; and in the most humid biotopes, Hyalosphenia papilio and Heleopera sphagni. Communities of testate amoebae differed by species composition and integral characteristics at different sphagnum moss horizons: the abundance and species richness increased with depth. The proportion of living individuals in the total number of tests was 35 to 75%.  相似文献

Success in ecological restoration is rarely assessed rigorously due to insufficient planning for post-restoration monitoring programs, limited funding and, especially, lack of scientifically validated evaluation criteria and protocols. In this article, we propose the use of the Indicator Value Index technique (IndVal), which statistically determines the association of species to one or several particular site types, to obtain indicators of success at the early stages of the recovery process in restoration projects. Peat bogs extracted by the vacuum method, subsequently restored by a moss-transfer technique and regularly monitored for ~10 years were used as a model system to test this approach. We first identified 34 restored sectors of ~10 ha from 4 to 11 years old in twelve eastern-Canadian bogs. These sectors were then classified according to their degree of success in recovering a typical sphagnum moss carpet (restoration goal). Then, we retrospectively reviewed vegetation communities recorded at the third year after restoration to identify indicator species of different categories of restoration success, using the IndVal methodology. By identifying early indicator species, our method provides a tool that guides intervention soon after restoration if a site is not on a desired successional trajectory. Typical bog species, namely the bryophytes S. rubellum and Mylia anomala and the tree Picea mariana, were indicative of successful restoration; while bare peat, lichens and one species of ericaceous shrubs (Empetrum nigrum), which cope better under drier conditions, indicated sites where restoration failed. A surprising finding was that the moss Polytrichum strictum, which is known to facilitate the colonization of sphagnum in disturbed peatlands, is an early indicator of unsuccessful restoration. This finding made us question the nursing role of P. strictum at a cover threshold above ca. 30%, when P. strictum could be outcompeting sphagnum and become dominant. We conclude that the IndVal method is an effective tool to identify early indicators of restoration success when combined with a thoughtful examination of species frequency and cover within each site type.  相似文献

The species composition of diatom algae in the Polistovo-Lovatskii sphagnum tract (Rdeiskoye bog, Novgorod oblast) \are studied. The systematic and ecological-geographical analyses of the flora are performed. A total of 256 species and intraspecific taxa differing in ecological specificities and frequencies of occurrence in samples are revealed. A considerable number of centric diatoms is found. It is shown that primary and secondary diatom communities are formed in large sphagnum tracts. The horizontal heterogeneity of diatom communities in sphagnum bog is revealed. The species diversities of diatom algae in different bogs are compared.  相似文献

Closely related host species are known to show variation in the level of resistance towards the same or similar parasite species, but this phenomenon is understudied. Such studies are important for understanding the ecological factors that might promote susceptibility or resistance to parasites: in particular, whether one host species is a larger target of selection for the parasite by virtue of being more abundant locally or more regionally widespread than another host species. In this study, we examined the expression of resistance by two closely related species of damselflies (Nehalennia irene and Nehalennia gracilis) against an Arrenurus water mite species. We show that the host species at each of two isolated sphagnum bogs have statistically indistinguishable levels of prevalence and intensity of infection by mite larvae. Despite having similar measures of parasitism, the regionally less represented species (N. gracilis) showed total resistance, whereas the regionally well-represented species (N. irene) was completely susceptible. Moreover, the form of resistance expressed by N. gracilis was unique, in that the oral glands of the mite were melanised. Also, this mite species was not found outside of isolated bog habitats. These results suggest that there might have been strong historical selection from this mite on the bog specialist, N. gracilis, and that this selection may have resulted in resistance evolving to fixation in a series of isolated populations.  相似文献

Sphagnum acid was detected in all 30 Sphagnum species investigated. The content declines in older stem segments. Investigations have so far failed to detect this cinnamic acid derivative outside the Sphagnales. In all the Sphagnum species analysed, a second, conspicuous substance was detected, apparently identical with a degradation product of sphagnum acid produced by enzymatic reaction with peroxidase in vitro. A casual correlation between the sphagnum acid content and peroxidase activity in vivo is discussed. Glyphosate (0.5 mM) inhibits the synthesis of sphagnum acid and shikimate accumulates. Exogenously supplied phenylalanine is able to produce up to 65% reversal of the glyphosate-mediated inhibition of sphagnum acid synthesis. A mixed effect of glyphosate was found on amino acid levels. The content of sphagnum acid is also reduced by daily application of 0.1 mM l-α-aminooxy-β-phenylpropionic acid.  相似文献

The species composition of diatoms in ten sphagnum bogs of the Volga Upland (Penzenskaya oblast) was studied. A systematic and ecologo-geographical analysis of flora was performed. A great number of algae were found (291 species and intraspecific taxon) that differ in specific ecological features and frequency of occurrence in samples. The horizontal heterogeneity of diatom communities in the sphagnum cover was established, and a decrease in the number of species from the center to the bog periphery was determined.  相似文献

We investigated the changes of water level and vegetation in a restored cut-over raised bog in response to a hydrological protection zone established around the bog. The restoration began 1997 and techniques involved ditch blocking within and around the bog to stimulate a return to conditions of intact bog ecosystems. In order to monitor the rehabilitation of the raised bog, water levels and vegetation have been recorded since before restoration measures began. The monitoring is ongoing, but an assessment of 15 year’s data (1994–2008) is presented. A hydrological protection zone with continuous high water levels could be established around the raised bog which minimizes the runoff of precipitation. Shortly after the first measures, the water levels increased significantly at all dipwells. Parallel to the increasing water levels a vascular plant species assemblage and a diverse Sphagnum community developed. In particular Sphagnum fimbriatum, S. palustre, S. recurvum and S. squarrosum spread efficiently. The cover of trees decreased significantly because of high water levels and ongoing acidification by Sphagnum spp. The high water levels have stimulated the re-vegetation and the hydrology self-regulation of the acrotelm. The successful regeneration of the acrotelm particularly became apparent in years with below-average precipitations (e.g. 2008), when the water levels in the central parts of the raised bog did not fall back to the low level reached in previous years, which had also remarkably water deficits (e.g. 2003).  相似文献

Pinus rotundata dominated peatbog (?ofinka Nature Reserve) in the T?eboň Basin, Czech Republic, was affected by “natural” disturbances: wind damage (1984), followed by a bark beetle attack, and fire (1994, 2000). Phytosociological relevés were used to document vegetation. Soil water chemistry was compared in three differently affected stands: (1) an undisturbed Pinus rotundata bog forest, (2) a windthrow – bark beetle affected stand and (3) a site burned by wildfire in 2000. The species composition of the windthrow – bark beetle affected sites and the undisturbed P. rotundata bog forest differed mainly in the shrub and tree layers. Burned sites were partly colonized by anemochorous species (e.g. Taraxacum sp. div.) that disappeared within two or three years after colonization. Bare peat was colonized by bryophytes (e.g. Marchantia polymorpha and Funaria hygrometrica) typical of the disturbed sites, and by Polytrichum sp. div. and Aulacomnium palustre. Most plant species characteristic of the P. rotundata bog forest occurred at the burned sites eight years after the fire, but in different abundances. The edificator of the former community—P. rotundata—was mostly absent. Compared with windthrow followed by the bark beetle attack, fire promoted rapid expansion of Molinia caerulea. Soil water in both the undisturbed P. rotundata bog forest and the windthrow – bark beetle affected sites had a similar composition: very low pH values, high P concentrations, low concentrations of cations (Ca2+, Mg2+and K+) and inorganic nitrogen. The concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and ${\text{NH}}_4^ + - {\text{N}}$ were negatively correlated with the groundwater table. Total P, SRP and ${\text{NH}}_4^ + - {\text{N}}$ concentrations in the soil water at the burned site were by one order of magnitude higher than those in the P. rotundata bog forest, while concentrations of K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ were only about two times higher. High concentrations of P and N in the soil water found three years after the fire indicated a long-term elevated nutrient content in the soil water.  相似文献

Restoration of peat bog vegetation inhighly degraded peatlands is generallyattempted by improving the hydrology ofthese areas. The present paper discussesand explains various restoration strategiesrelating to peat quality, water chemistryand hydrology. In some cases, (shallow)inundation of bog remnants leads to a rapidredevelopment of (floating) Sphagnumvegetation, usually when poorly humifiedSphagnum peat is still present. Afterinundation, the peat either swells up tothe newly created water table or becomesbuoyant, in both cases creating a favorablesubstrate for Sphagnum mosses. Bulkdensity and methane production rate play animportant role in the buoyancy of floatingpeat, methane providing buoyancy to thesubstrates. The presence of (slightly)calcareous groundwater in the peat base mayenhance the development of floating raftsby stimulating decomposition processes.Alternatively, the growth of submerged Sphagnum species can also lead to thedevelopment of floating rafts. This dependson the penetration of light into the waterlayer and the availability of carbondioxide in the water layer.Many bog remnants, however, only havestrongly humified peat, which does notfavor the redevelopment of Sphagnumcarpets after deep inundation. On the otherhand, most peat moss species appear to dovery well on surface soaked black peat,which is why shallow inundation (< 0.3 m)is to be preferred in such cases.Compartmentalization of the terrain willprobably be necessary to ensure a more orless constant water table.An important prerequisite for thesuccessful restoration of bog remnants isthe development of a hydrologicallyself-regulating acrotelm. Key speciesinvolved in this development are Sphagnum magellanicum, Sphagnumpapillosum and Sphagnum rubellum.These typical hummock and lawn species areusually very slow colonizers compared tohollow species such as Sphagnumcuspidatum and Sphagnum fallax.Introduction of key species in carpetsdominated by hollow species or on baresubstrates appears to be very successful,indicating that the main constraint iscolonization.  相似文献

Methanogens play a critical role in the decomposition of organics under anaerobic conditions. The methanogenic consortia in saturated wetland soils are often subjected to large temperature fluctuations and acidic conditions, imposing a selective pressure for psychro- and acidotolerant community members; however, methanogenic communities in engineered digesters are frequently maintained within a narrow range of mesophilic and circumneutral conditions to retain system stability. To investigate the hypothesis that these two disparate environments have distinct methanogenic communities, the methanogens in an oligotrophic acidic fen and a mesophilic anaerobic digester treating municipal wastewater sludge were characterized by creating clone libraries for the 16S rRNA and methyl coenzyme M reductase alpha subunit (mcrA) genes. A quantitative framework was developed to assess the differences between these two communities by calculating the average sequence similarity for 16S rRNA genes and mcrA within a genus and family using sequences of isolated and characterized methanogens within the approved methanogen taxonomy. The average sequence similarities for 16S rRNA genes within a genus and family were 96.0 and 93.5%, respectively, and the average sequence similarities for mcrA within a genus and family were 88.9 and 79%, respectively. The clone libraries of the bog and digester environments showed no overlap at the species level and almost no overlap at the family level. Both libraries were dominated by clones related to uncultured methanogen groups within the Methanomicrobiales, although members of the Methanosarcinales and Methanobacteriales were also found in both libraries. Diversity indices for the 16S rRNA gene library of the bog and both mcrA libraries were similar, but these indices indicated much lower diversity in the 16S digester library than in the other three libraries.  相似文献

Peat bogs are very sensitive and highly endangered ecosystems. They were once typical landscape elements in northern Germany, but today only a few remnants exist. On-going habitat degradation has alarming adverse effects on biodiversity, and, from a conservation viewpoint, it is imperative to evaluate the current ecological quality of the remaining peat bog remnants to assess the intensity of degradation and to suggest reasonable management strategies. In 2007, spiders were sampled in 23 study sites representing typical peat bog habitat types in the northern parts of Westphalia (NW Germany). In all, 214 species from 18,413 adult individuals have been collected. Multivariate analyses showed that different peat bog successional stages harbour distinct spider assemblages with succession being the main driver for species separation. Pardosa sphagnicola, Pirata piscatorius and P. uliginosus can be considered as flagship species for near-natural or natural peat bogs. Trait analyses showed that habitat specialisation for high moisture is negatively affected by succession. Peat bogs are now only small remnants, but, nevertheless, they have a high conservation value as they still harbour a distinct species assemblage and specialised species.  相似文献

The microbial population of sphagnum peat bogs of northern Russia was analyzed with respect to the presence and cell numbers of representatives of particular phylogenetic groups of prokaryotes by means of in situ hybridization with fluorescently labeled group-specific rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes with broad detection spectra. The total number of cells that hybridized with universal Archaea- and Bacteria-specific probes varied, in peat samples of different bogs, from 45 to 83% of the number of cells revealed by DAPI staining. Down the bog profiles, the total number of prokaryotes and the fraction of archaea among them increased. Application of a set of oligonucleotide probes showed that the number of microorganisms belonging to such phylogenetic lineages of the domain Bacteria as the phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Acidobacteria, and Planctomycetes constituted, in total, 14.0–26.5% of the number of eubacteria detected in the samples. Among the bacteria identified in the peat samples, the most abundant were representatives of the classes Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria and the phyla Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria.  相似文献

Sea-level rise and frequent intense hurricanes associated with climate change will result in recurrent flooding of inland systems such as Gulf Coastal pitcher plant bogs by storm surges. These surges can transport salt water and sediment to freshwater bogs, greatly affecting their biological integrity. Purple pitcher plants (Sarracenia rosea) are Gulf Coast pitcher plant bog inhabitants that could be at a disadvantage under this scenario because their pitcher morphology may leave them prone to collection of saline water and sediment after a surge. We investigated the effects of storm surge water salinity and sediment type on S. rosea vitality, plant community structure, and bog soil-water conductivity. Plots (containing ≥1 ramet of S. rosea) were experimentally flooded with fresh or saline water crossed with one of three sediment types (local, foreign, or no sediment). There were no treatment effects on soil-water conductivity; nevertheless, direct exposure to saline water resulted in significantly lower S. rosea cover until the following season when a prescribed fire and regional drought contributed to the decline of all the S. rosea to near zero percent cover. There were also significant differences in plant community structure between treatments over time, reflecting how numerous species increased in abundance and a few species decreased in abundance. However, in contrast to S. rosea, most of the other species in the community appeared resilient to the effects of storm surge. Thus, although the community may be somewhat affected by storm surge, those few species that are particularly sensitive to the storm surge disturbance will likely drop out of the community and be replaced by more resilient species. Depending on the longevity of these biological legacies, Gulf Coastal pitcher plant bogs may be incapable of fully recovering if they become exposed to storm surge more frequently due to climate change.  相似文献

Hydrological disturbances can alter the structure and function of ecosystems by changing plant species composition over time. Peatlands in the northern hemisphere are particularly sensitive to global change drivers related to soil water availability, such as drought and drainage, because of important ecohydrological feedbacks between species composition and water table position. Here, we examined the plant community structure and environmental drivers of species distributions over two growing seasons along a bog – margin gradient, pre- and post-disturbance by beaver activity. Pond drainage resulted in seasonal average water table depth 8–24 cm lower in the second season. Five plant communities corresponded to changes in water table depth and acidity: bog, poor fen, meadow, mudflat and pond. Plant cover increased in meadow and mudflat communities, decreased in the pond community and did not differ between years in bog and poor fen communities. Changes in species abundance between years showed signs of alternate successional pathways: one that favors Sphagnum moss and bog community expansion and another pathway that favors meadow and mudflat expansion. This study highlights the non-linear successional trajectory of plant communities with changes in water table depth, which has implications for land management goals that aim to conserve the ecological integrity of peatland ecosystems.  相似文献

The reserves of phytomass and deposited nutrition elements in a grass mire have been estimated. Two grass mires and one sphagnum bog are compared in these parameters. The sphagnum bog and one grass mire are in Poland, and the other grass mire is in Russia. As follows from the comparison, the common climatic and geochemical properties of location have effect on the chemical nature of phytomass. Grass mires have a higher content of nitrogen than sphagnum bogs. Both of the Polish bogs exhibit an increased content of K and a decreased content of Ca. The accumulation of P is characteristic of the Siberian grass mire and the accumulation of S is found in the Polish one.  相似文献

To elucidate the sensitivity of bog ecosystems to high levels of nitrogen (N) deposition, we investigated the fate of 15N-labeled N deposition in bog vegetation in the Netherlands, both at ambient and increased N deposition. We doubled N deposition by adding 5 g N m?2 y?1 as dissolved NH4NO3 during three growing seasons to large peat monoliths (1.1 m diameter) with intact bog vegetation kept in large outdoor containers. A small amount of 15N tracer was applied at the start of the second growing season, and its distribution among Sphagnum, vascular plant species, and peat was determined at the end of the third growing season. The 15N tracer was also applied to additional plots at the untreated field site to check for initial distribution. One week after addition, 79% of the total amount of 15N retrieved was found in the living Sphagnum layer and less than 10% had been captured by vascular plants. Fifteen months later, 63% of the total amount of 15N retrieved was still present in the living Sphagnum layer at ambient N deposition. Increased N deposition significantly reduced the proportion of 15N in Sphagnum and increased the amount of 15N in vascular plants. Deep-rooting vascular plant species were significantly more 15N enriched, suggesting that at higher atmospheric inputs N penetrates deeper into the peat. Our results provide the first direct experimental evidence for that which has often been suggested: Increased atmospheric N deposition will lead to increased N availability for vascular plants in ombrotrophic mires.  相似文献

Strong climate warming is predicted at higher latitudes this century, with potentially major consequences for productivity and carbon sequestration. Although northern peatlands contain one‐third of the world's soil organic carbon, little is known about the long‐term responses to experimental climate change of vascular plant communities in these Sphagnum‐dominated ecosystems. We aimed to see how long‐term experimental climate manipulations, relevant to different predicted future climate scenarios, affect total vascular plant abundance and species composition when the community is dominated by mosses. During 8 years, we investigated how the vascular plant community of a Sphagnum fuscum‐dominated subarctic peat bog responded to six experimental climate regimes, including factorial combinations of summer as well as spring warming and a thicker snow cover. Vascular plant species composition in our peat bog was more stable than is typically observed in (sub)arctic experiments: neither changes in total vascular plant abundance, nor in individual species abundances, Shannon's diversity or evenness were found in response to the climate manipulations. For three key species (Empetrum hermaphroditum, Betula nana and S. fuscum) we also measured whether the treatments had a sustained effect on plant length growth responses and how these responses interacted. Contrasting with the stability at the community level, both key shrubs and the peatmoss showed sustained positive growth responses at the plant level to the climate treatments. However, a higher percentage of moss‐encroached E. hermaphroditum shoots and a lack of change in B. nana net shrub height indicated encroachment by S. fuscum, resulting in long‐term stability of the vascular community composition: in a warmer world, vascular species of subarctic peat bogs appear to just keep pace with growing Sphagnum in their race for space. Our findings contribute to general ecological theory by demonstrating that community resistance to environmental changes does not necessarily mean inertia in vegetation response.  相似文献

The emission of methane (1.3 mmol of CH4 m−2 day−1), precursors of methanogenesis, and the methanogenic microorganisms of acidic bog peat (pH 4.4) from a moderately reduced forest site were investigated by in situ measurements, microcosm incubations, and cultivation methods, respectively. Bog peat produced CH4 (0.4 to 1.7 μmol g [dry wt] of soil−1 day−1) under anoxic conditions. At in situ pH, supplemental H2-CO2, ethanol, and 1-propanol all increased CH4 production rates while formate, acetate, propionate, and butyrate inhibited the production of CH4; methanol had no effect. H2-dependent acetogenesis occurred in H2-CO2-supplemented bog peat only after extended incubation periods. Nonsupplemented bog peat initially produced small amounts of H2 that were subsequently consumed. The accumulation of H2 was stimulated by ethanol and 1-propanol or by inhibiting methanogenesis with bromoethanesulfonate, and the consumption of ethanol was inhibited by large amounts of H2; these results collectively indicated that ethanol- or 1-propanol-utilizing bacteria were trophically associated with H2-utilizing methanogens. A total of 109 anaerobes and 107 hydrogenotrophic methanogens per g (dry weight) of bog peat were enumerated by cultivation techniques. A stable methanogenic enrichment was obtained with an acidic, H2-CO2-supplemented, fatty acid-enriched defined medium. CH4 production rates by the enrichment were similar at pH 4.5 and 6.5, and acetate inhibited methanogenesis at pH 4.5 but not at pH 6.5. A total of 27 different archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequences indicative of Methanobacteriaceae, Methanomicrobiales, and Methanosarcinaceae were retrieved from the highest CH4-positive serial dilutions of bog peat and methanogenic enrichments. A total of 10 bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences were also retrieved from the same dilutions and enrichments and were indicative of bacteria that might be responsible for the production of H2 that could be used by hydrogenotrophic methanogens. These results indicated that in this acidic bog peat, (i) H2 is an important substrate for acid-tolerant methanogens, (ii) interspecies hydrogen transfer is involved in the degradation of organic carbon, (iii) the accumulation of protonated volatile fatty acids inhibits methanogenesis, and (iv) methanogenesis might be due to the activities of methanogens that are phylogenetic members of the Methanobacteriaceae, Methanomicrobiales, and Methanosarcinaceae.  相似文献

南酸枣阔叶林群落是湘中丘陵区的重要的森林群落类型之一,在森林演替过程中占有重要的地位。在湘中丘陵区长沙县大山冲林场的代表性群落——南酸枣阔叶林群落(The Choerospondias axillaries broad-leaved community)设立1 hm2固定样地,对其群落学特征进行调查,分析其植物多样性和更新动态。结果表明:群落中胸径≥1cm的乔木树种共有25科42属59种。乔木层中南酸枣(Choerospondias axillaries)的重要值最大(23.57),是群落中的建群种;南酸枣胸径和树高结构均呈正态分布,南酸枣幼苗(1.0cm≤DBH1.5cm)只有6株;群落中四川山矾(Symplocos setchuensis)的重要值(10.46)排第二,但胸径小于1.5 cm的幼树数量较多(占种群数量的22.0%),格药柃(Eurya muricata)、千年桐(Aleurites montana)和毛豹皮樟(Lindera coreana)的重要值分别为7.98(幼树数占种群数量的16.8%),5.39(幼树数占种群数量的11.7%),4.17(幼树数占种群数量的11.0%),这4个乔木树种的径级结构均呈倒J型分布;林分的成层结构中,上层木主要为南酸枣,下层木主要为四川山矾、格药柃、千年桐和毛豹皮樟。林下幼苗主要为常绿阔叶树种,且更新良好,并将成为下一个演替阶段的建群种。南酸枣的幼苗更新不良情况说明其在群落中的优势地位在逐年降低,而四川山矾、格药柃、千年桐、毛豹皮樟等树种的优势地位呈上升趋势,表明湘中丘陵区的南酸枣阔叶林群落正在朝常绿阔叶林的方向演替。灌木、草本层中共有植物37种,重要值前5位的种为檵木(Loropetalum chinensis)、满山红(Rhododendron mariesii)、乌饭(Vaccinium bracteatum)、栀子(Gardenia jasminoides)、映山红(Rhododendron simsii)分别为54.59、21.85、4.98、4.63、4.53,其中,檵木和满山红在灌木层中的优势地位明显。  相似文献
