Seasonal fluctuations of soil and litter microarthropod populations in a pine,Pinus kesiya Royle plantation of North Eastern India were investigated between November 1976 and November 1977. Three major groups were recognized: (a) Collembola, (b) Acarina and (c) miscellaneous. Collembola was the most abundant group and was dominated byIsotoma trispinata (MacGillivray). The total microarthropod density ranged from 26,800 per m2 to 145,200 per m2. Collembola densities ranged from 10,000 to 121,200 per m2, Acarina densities ranged from 8,800 to 41,600 per m2, and the miscellaneous group ranged from 1,200 to 6,400 per m2. Soil moisture was positively correlated with total arthropod, Collembola and Acarina densities. Soil temperature was positively correlated only with Acarina. Densities of Collembola and Acarina were negatively correlated. The work described in this paper was carried out while the author was at the Department of Zoology, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Mehgalaya (India). It was presented at the Ninth International Biometeorological Congress, 23rd Sptember–1st October, 1981, Osnabrück and Stuttgart-Hohenheim, FRG.  相似文献

Isotoma klovstadi Carpenter, 1902 was one of the first Collembola described from the Antarctic continent. It was first collected in November 1899 during the British Antarctic Expedition on the north coast of Victoria Land in the Ross Sea region. It is now known to occur in an extensive area of northern Victoria Land, including the offshore Possession, Coulman, and Foyn Islands. More recently, I. klovstadi was moved to the genus Gnathisotoma Cassagnau, 1957 and has been included in this genus in an unpublished checklist (online) of all described Collembola. Here, we redescribe the species and use morphological and molecular (COI and 18S genes) evidence to investigate its affinities within the Isotominae. We show that it does not belong to Gnathisotoma, or Isotoma s. str. (the viridis group) as currently conceived, but is likely to be part of the species complex of Isotoma s. lat. We discuss reasons for placing it in the genus Desoria Nicolet, 1841. Our results reinforce the already high level of endemicity in the Antarctic fauna and emphasise the value of both morphological and molecular studies in examining relict Gondwanan taxa and their evolutionary relationships with those of other Southern Hemisphere continents.  相似文献

Natural enemies that control pests usually allow farmers to avoid, or reduce, the use of pesticides. However, modern farming practices, that maximize yields, are resulting in loss of biodiversity, particularly prey diversity. Does this matter? Pests continue to thrive, and without alternative prey the predators should, perforce, concentrate their attentions upon the pests. We showed that a diverse diet significantly enhances predator fecundity and survival. Experiments were conducted using common generalist predators found in arable fields in Europe, the carabid beetle Pterostichus melanarius (Coleoptera: Carabidae) and the linyphiid spider Erigone atra (Araneae: Linyphiidae). We tested the hypothesis that mixed species diets were optimal, compared with restricted diets, with respect to parameters such as predator weights, egg weights, numbers of eggs laid, egg development times, egg hatching rates and predator survival. In carabids, an exclusive earthworm diet was as good as mixed diets containing earthworms for egg production and hatching, but less good than such mixed diets for increase in beetle mass and sustained egg laying. For spiders, aphids alone (Sitobion avenae) or with the Collembola Folsomia candida, drastically reduced survival. Aphids plus the Collembola Isotoma anglicana improved survival but only aphids with a mixed Collembola diet maximized numbers of hatching eggs.Predators offered only pests (slugs or aphids) had lowest growth rates and fecundity. We therefore demonstrated that conservation of a diversity of prey species within farmland, allowing predators to exploit a diverse diet, is essential if predators are to continue to thrive in crops and regulate agricultural pests.  相似文献

Summary Sampling experiments show that some terrestrial arthropod species which predominate on the flood plains of Eder Reservoir (Germany) survive long-term inundations in the egg stage under water, hatching immediately after the floods: the Collembola Isotoma viridis, Anurida tullbergi, Sminthurides malmgreni, Sminthurinus aureus, and Sminthurus nigromaculatus; the land mites Cheylostigmaeus pannonicus and Zerconopsis müstairi; and the ephydrid fly Scatella stagnalis. Some other dominant species seem to have the same survival strategy, because they show the same characteristic pattern of appearance in the study area (bdellid and oribatid mites, ephydrid and sphaerocerid flies).  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Collembola and oribatid mites from windswept mountain ridges at about 2700 m a.s.l. in the Austrian Alps were all killed by freezing, and depend on supercooling to survive low winter temperatures. The Collembola Tetracanthella afurcata Handschin, Xenylla acauda Gisin and Isotoma spp. collected in January had average supercooling points between -25 and -29°C, and the oribatid mites Fuscozetes fuscipes (Koch) and Lepidozetes singularis Berlese of about -28 and -31°C respectively. The ability to supercool was not increased during storage at -5°C, and was generally lower in species collected in March.
2. The oribatid mites Fuscozetes intermedius Caroli and Maffia, F. fuscipes, Damaeus diversipilis (Willmann) and L.singularis contained from 9 to 16 μg glycerol per mg fresh weight after storage at -5°C, while no glycerol could be detected in the Collembola Isotoma spp., T.afurcata and Onychiurus vontoernei Gisin.
3. Activity below 0°C was observed in T.afurcata and O.vontoernei , which had chill-coma temperatures of -7.7 and -4.9°C respectively.
4. Some specimens of F.intermedius survived more than 90 days of anoxia at 0°C, T.afurcata up to 60 days and O.vontoernei up to 24 days.
5. The overwintering biology of Collembola and oribatid mites from the Austrian Alps appears similar to that of Norwegian species, except that those from Austria have slightly lower supercooling points and higher contents of glycerol.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Temperate woodland Collembola feed predominantly on plant detritus and fungi. They exhibit preferences for different fungi reflecting resource value in terms of Collembola growth and reproduction. 2. Studies of fungal grazing by Collembola have focused on non‐interacting fungi and have used one genetic isolate as representative of an entire fungal species. This study examines the effects of fungal interactions on Collembola behaviour, and elucidates differences arising from the use of genetically distinct fungal isolates. 3. Folsomia candida were added to microcosms in which paired combinations of the fungi, Hypholoma fasciculare (four isolates), Phallus impudicus, Phanerochetae velutina and Resinicium bicolor (two isolates), were interacting. Collembola movement and mortality was recorded for 26 days. A constant preference for one fungal mycelium over the other was shown by Collembola in 12 of the 36 interactions studied. Lowest Collembola mortality was normally recorded on the preferred mycelium. 4. In 11 of the remaining 24 interactions, Collembola preference switched from one mycelium to the other; the greatest number of dead Collembola was recorded on the final preference. 5. Collembola behaviour on different fungal isolates was broadly similar, although in one species’ combination a change in fungal isolate resulted in a total reversal of Collembola preference. The implications of these results for decomposer food webs are considered.  相似文献

Collembola comprise a major source of alternative prey to linyphiid spiders in arable fields, helping to sustain and retain these predators as aphid control agents within the crop. Polymerase chain reaction primers were developed for the amplification, from spider gut samples, of DNA from three of the most abundant species of Collembola in wheat crops in Europe, namely Isotoma anglicana, Lepidocyrtus cyaneus and Entomobrya multifasciata. The primers amplified fragments of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and were designed following alignment of comparable sequences for a range of predator and prey species. Each of the primer pairs proved to be species-specific to a Collembola species, amplifying DNA fragments from 211 to 276 base pairs in length. Following consumption of a single collembolan, prey DNA was detectable in 100% of spiders after 24 h of digestion. We report the first use of DNA-based techniques to detect predation by arthropods on natural populations of prey in the field. All three species of Collembola were consumed by the spiders. By comparing the ratios of the Collembola species in the field with the numbers of spiders that gave positive results for each of those species, it was possible to demonstrate that the spiders were exercising prey choice. Overall, a single target species of Collembola was eaten by 48% of spiders while a further 16% of spiders contained DNA from two different species of Collembola. Preference was particularly evident for I. anglicana, the species most frequently found in spider guts yet the least numerous of the three target species in the field.  相似文献

Qualitative samples of Collembola were obtained from a range of substrates near Husvik, Stromness Bay, South Georgia, between January and March 1996. Collections made at Hope Point near Grytviken (Cumberland East Bay) in 1980/1982 and 1997 were also examined. Fifteen species of Collembola were recorded around Husvik; most were widely distributed. Two of these, Friesia sp. nov. and Cryptopygus badasa, represent additions to the previously recognised fauna of 17 species. A new record of an introduced species, Hypogastrura purpurescens, was identified in collections from Hope Point in 1980/1982, bringing the total South Georgian fauna to 20 species. A key to South Georgian Collembola is included. H. purpurescens and the congeneric Hypogastrura viatica, both cosmopolitan invasive species, have also been recognised on other sub-Antarctic islands and have displaced resident species from some habitats. Their presence on South Georgia, and the dominance of H. viatica in some habitats, highlight the importance of strict quarantine measures to avoid the introduction of further alien invertebrates. Cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (CMECs) are important angiogenic components and are injured rapidly after cardiac ischaemia and anoxia. Cardioprotective effects of Qiliqiangxin (QL), a traditional Chinese medicine, have been displayed recently. This study aims to investigate whether QL could protect CMECs against anoxic injury and to explore related signalling mechanisms. CMECs were successfully cultured from Sprague‐Dawley rats and exposed to anoxia for 12 hrs in the absence and presence of QL. Cell migration assay and capillary‐like tube formation assay on Matrigel were performed, and cell apoptosis was determined by TUNEL assay and caspase‐3 activity. Neuregulin‐1 (NRG‐1) siRNA and LY294002 were administrated to block NRG‐1/ErbB and PI3K/Akt signalling, respectively. As a result, anoxia inhibited cell migration, capillary‐like tube formation and angiogenesis, and increased cell apoptosis. QL significantly reversed these anoxia‐induced injuries and up‐regulated expressions of NRG‐1, phospho‐ErbB2, phospho‐ErbB4, phospho‐Akt, phospho‐mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), hypoxia‐inducible factor‐1α (HIF‐1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in CMECs, while NRG‐1 knockdown abolished the protective effects of QL with suppressed NRG‐1, phospho‐ErbB2, phospho‐ErbB4, phospho‐Akt, phospho‐mTOR, HIF‐1α and VEGF expressions. Similarly, LY294002 interrupted the beneficial effects of QL with down‐regulated phospho‐Akt, phospho‐mTOR, HIF‐1α and VEGF expressions. However, it had no impact on NRG‐1/ErbB signalling. Our data indicated that QL could attenuate anoxia‐induced injuries in CMECs via NRG‐1/ErbB signalling which was most probably dependent on PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway.  相似文献

1. Saprotrophic cord‐forming basidiomycetes are the primary agents of decomposition in forest ecosystems. Collembola and oribatid mites affect fungal growth and foraging, and therefore decomposition, through direct mycelial grazing. 2. Grazing on the fungal species Hypholoma fasciculare, Resinicium bicolor and Phanerochaete velutina by the collembola Folsomia candida, and the oribatid mites Steganacarus magnus, Euzetes globulus and Hermannia gibba was investigated in soil microcosms. 3. Folsomia candida grazed on all fungal species: radial extent of R. bicolor, hyphal coverage of all fungal species, and fractal dimension of R. bicolor and P. velutina were all reduced. Oribatid mites did not graze the fungi but did affect mycelial morphology. Steganacarus magnus caused a reduction in the radial extent of H. fasciculare, and the hyphal coverage and fractal dimension in both H. fasciculare and R. bicolor. Euzetes globulus and H. gibba reduced the hyphal coverage of P. velutina. 4. Oribatid mites are associated with a cornucopia of chemical secretions with possible anti‐fungal properties. Chemical analysis of H. gibba opisthonotal secretions revealed four main compounds, all of which are new to the known spectrum of opisthonotal components. The most abundant was (E)‐β‐farnesene. 5. Treatment effects were species‐specific in terms of both fungal and invertebrate species. This study provides the first evidence of non‐grazing effects of oribatid mites on fungal growth and morphology. This could potentially influence the spatial organisation of mycelium in forest soils and therefore the ability of fungi to locate, colonise and decompose dead organic matter.  相似文献

The spatio‐temporal distribution of Psylliodes chrysocephala (L.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a pest of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) (L.) (Cruciferae) and its potential predators, carabid beetles, within a crop of winter oilseed rape is described. The distribution of Collembola, a potential alternative food source for the predators, is also investigated. Insects were collected from spatially referenced sampling points across the crop and the counts mapped, analysed, and the degree of spatial association between the distributions determined using Spatial Analysis by Distance IndicEs (SADIE). Immigration into the crop by adult P. chrysocephala occurred from two edges and resulted in a non‐uniform distribution of the pest within the crop. Infestation of rape plants by P. chrysocephala larvae was greatest within the central area of the crop. Significant spatial association between adult female P. chrysocephala and the larval infestation of plants occurred throughout October. Three carabid species were active and abundant during peak pest immigration into the crop, viz., Trechus quadristriatus (Schrank) (Coleoptera: Carabidae), Pterostichus madidus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Carabidae), and Nebria brevicollis (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Two of these species, T. quadristriatus and P. madidus, showed significant spatial association with the larvae of P. chrysocephala during October. All three carabid species showed a significant spatial association with Collembola during mid‐September, indicating that the latter may be an important food source for carabids during this period. In laboratory feeding experiments, only T. quadristriatus consumed the eggs of P. chrysocephala suggesting that, in the adult stage, this species may be the most important of the naturally occurring carabids as a predator of P. chrysocephala in the field. Adult T. quadristriatus may be a valuable component of an Integrated Pest Management strategy for winter oilseed rape, and the conservation of this species could be beneficial.  相似文献

Most data on species associations and vector potential of mosquitoes in relation to arboviral infections in South Africa date back from the 1940s to late 1990s. Contextual information crucial for disease risk management and control, such as the sampling effort, diversity, abundance, and distribution of mosquitoes in large parts of South Africa still remains limited. Adult mosquitoes were collected routinely from two horse farms in Gauteng Province; two wildlife reserves in Limpopo Province, at Orpen Gate in Kruger National Park (KNP) and Mnisi Area in Mpumalanga Province between 2014–2017, using carbon dioxide‐baited light and tent traps. Mosquito diversity and richness are greater in untransformed natural and mixed rural settings. In untransformed wilderness areas, the most dominant species were Culex poicilipes, Anopheles coustani, and Aedes mcintoshi, while in mixed rural settings such as the Mnisi area, the two most abundant species were Cx. poicilipes and Mansonia uniformis. However, in peri‐urban areas, Cx. theileri, Cx. univittatus, and Cx. pipiens sensu lato were the most dominant. Aedes aegypti, Ae. mcintoshi, Ae. metallicus, Ae. vittatus, Cx. pipiens s.l., Cx. theileri, and Cx. univittatus had the widest geographical distribution in northern South Africa. Also collected were Anopheles arabiensis and An. vaneedeni, both known malaria vectors in South Africa. Arbovirus surveillance and vector control programs should be augmented in mixed rural and peri‐urban areas where the risk for mosquito‐borne disease transmission to humans and domestic stock is greater.  相似文献

In the context of conservation biology, we have searched for the most influential characteristics of urban parks on ecological diversity. In this study, therefore, we studied the ant community of 24 parks in two cities of Southern Spain (Cordoba and Seville). In total, 46 species were found. Abundant and widely distributed species were synanthropic ones, such as Lasius grandis, Pheidole pallidula or Tapinoma nigerrimum, and exotic species such as Cardiocondyla mauritanica. However some parks also harbored natural habitat‐preferring species. Park size, shape and distance to city outskirts were the most important predictors of species richness and diversity. Likewise, park age influenced the composition of the ant fauna.  相似文献

Fungal feeding soil invertebrates feed on a wide spectrum of fungal species suggesting that mixed diets increase fitness. We investigated relationships between food preferences for seven saprophytic fungal species/forms and fitness parameters (mortality, growth, time to reproduction, reproduction, egg size) in two Collembola species, Folsomia candida and Protaphorura armata. The fungal species/forms studied included the wild type and a melanin-deficient form of Aspergillus fumigatus to investigate the role of melanin in collembolan nutrition. Also, three mixed diets consisting of a preferred fungal species (Cladosporium cladosporioides) and species of intermediate or low food quality were investigated. Both Collembola species preferred similar fungal species/forms as food. Food preference generally matched fitness parameters, i.e. growth and reproduction of Collembola was at a maximum when feeding on preferred fungi. This was not the case for A. fumigatus. The wild type and the melanin-deficient form ranked among the least preferred fungi. Growth and reproduction of Collembola were low when feeding on the wild type but high when feeding on the melanin-deficient form indicating that the Collembola misjudged the food quality of the latter in the preference tests. The results show for the first time that genes driving melanin syntheses (pksP) strongly affect the food quality of fungi for fungal feeding invertebrates. Feeding on mixed diets generally increased growth and reproduction of Collembola except when the diets included toxic species (Penicillium sp.). The results support the nutrient balance hypothesis and also show that the detection of toxic species in the diet is important. They indicate that the widespread generalist feeding mode of Collembola maximizes fitness if toxic fungal species are avoided. The fitness parameters growth, reproduction and time until onset of reproduction were correlated closely but egg volume, which also varied with fungal diet, correlated poorly with the other fitness parameters. Variation in egg size with fungal diet shows that the diet of Collembola may have transgenerational effects.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to evaluate the suitability of selected DNA regions in the barcoding of plants, based on the species belonging to the genus Lamium (Lamiaceae). For this purpose, nine chloroplast barcodes, that is, accD, matK, rbcL, rpoA, rpoB, rpoC1, rpoC2, trnH‐psbA, trnL‐trnF, as well as ITS nuclear region, and intron of mitochondrial nad5 gene were tested. Among the single‐locus barcodes, most effective in the identification of Lamium species was the trnH‐psbA spacer and matK gene. The high level of variability and resolving power was also observed in the case of rpoA and rpoC2 genes. Despite the high interspecies variability of ITS region, it turned out to be inapplicable in Lamium identification. An important disadvantage of ITS as a barcode is a limitation of its use in polyploid plants, samples contaminated with fungal material or samples with partially degraded DNA. We have also evaluated five‐two‐locus and two‐three‐locus barcode regions created from a combination of most effective single loci. The best‐performing barcode combinations were matK + trnH‐psbA and matK + rpoA. Both of them had equally high discriminative power to identify Lamium species.  相似文献

The effects of environmental change on soil animal communities are poorly known. Norwegian mountains are subject to both atmospheric nitrogen deposition and increased temperature. In a nutrient poor alpine Dryas heath in south Norway, soil arthropods were studied after 4 years of simulated environmental change by warming and/or nutrient addition. Warming alone only affected three low‐density Collembola species, while nutrient addition, with or without warming, greatly changed the dominance hierarchy of the microarthropod community. Certain Collembola species with a short (1 year) life cycle and predatory Gamasina mites increased markedly in density. These groups may have been favored by increased litter production, as plant biomass and litter producing graminoids and forbs increased significantly in plots with nutrient addition and nutrient addition combined with warming. Microarthropods with a longer life cycle, such as Oribatida and certain Collembola, were generally unaffected by nutrient addition and probably need more time to respond. The number of Oribatida taxa was, however, reduced in plots with nutrient addition, both with and without warming. A ground‐living species of Coccoidea (Homoptera) declined in plots with nutrient addition and warming compared with only warming, probably due to reduced cover of its host plant Dryas. The density of Diptera larvae (Sciaridae and Chironomidae) was unaffected by the treatments. Our results show that increased nutrient availability in nutrient poor alpine soils may have large but different effects on different taxa of soil animals. Species with short life cycles reacted first. Nutrient addition and nutrient addition combined with warming resulted in several effects below ground on microarthropods as previously shown above ground on plants: Increased biomass, high dominance of a few rapid‐growing species, contrasting responses of closely related species, and a reduction in species numbers. These short‐term responses may have profound long‐term effects in this alpine ecosystem.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that within a relatively homogeneous vegetation type the spatial configuration of different plant species may be a determining factor in the composition of the soil animal communities. Six vascular plant species (Luzula confusa, Dryas octopetala, Cassiope tetragona, Salix polaris, Silene acaulis and Saxifraga opposigifolia), growing within high Arctic Saxifraga‐lichen heath vegetation, showed different distributional patterns. Luzula confusa and S. polaris were ubiquitous throughout while D. octopetala and C. tetragona had the most scattered distributions. Soil microarthropod density varied significantly among plant species from 18 000 (S. polaris) to 42 000 m?2 (S. acaulis). Few significant numerical interrelationships were found between the population densities of the different Collembola or cryptostigmatic mite species or between microarthropod densities and variation in the physical properties of the soil associated with each plant species. However, despite the high similarity of species present, Discriminant Analysis idengified distinct microarthropod assemblages associated with each plant species. Over 70% of microarthropod samples taken from soil beneath S. polaris or L. confusa were correctly classified. Rank order of animal species abundance, however, varied among plant species. The collembolan Folsomia quadrioculata ranked first in five of the six plant species but the mite Camisia anomia was numerically dominant under S. polaris. The second most abundant species was much more variable. Despite these variations, the shape of the species rank abundance curve for microarthropods was remarkably similar for all plant species, with rank one and two species comprising ca 55 and 27% of the fauna respectively. These conclusions were reinforced by χ2 analysis which idengified significantly distinct faunal communities between each plant species. Those microarthropod species contributing most to these between‐plant differences, as measured by higher or lower than expected populations, were idengified and were shown to be not always the most abundant species. Thus, on a local scale plants of different species were shown to act as useful proxy indicators of soil conditions that affect the soil microarthropod community. This should be taken into account when designing sampling programmes for soil invertebrates.  相似文献
