Zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) is a rodenticide used to control a variety of small mammal species. It is available over-the-counter or as a restricted-use pesticide depending on how it is to be applied. The toxicity of Zn3P2 is dependent on the species exposed, whether the animal is able to vomit or not, and whether it is ingested on a full or empty stomach. Nontarget species can be exposed through inadvertent or intentional product misapplication. In this article we describe four mortality events in which wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) were believed to have been intoxicated following the ingestion of baits containing Zn3P2.  相似文献

Diagnostic findings are presented on 139 sick or dead wild turkeys examined during the period 1972 through 1984. Turkeys originated from eight southeastern states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia) and included 31 turkeys categorized as capture-related mortalities and 108 turkeys categorized as natural mortalities. Frequent diagnoses (greater than or equal to 10% of case accessions) in the natural mortality group were trauma, avian pox, and histomoniasis. Less frequent diagnoses (less than or equal to 4% of case accessions) included malnutrition/environmental stress syndrome, coligranuloma-like condition, crop impaction, bumblefoot, organophosphate toxicosis, infectious sinusitis, a lympho-proliferative disease, salmonellosis, aspergillosis, toxoplasmosis, crop trichomoniasis, and melorheostosis.  相似文献

Viral agents producing both a syncytial-type cytopathic effect and type A intranuclear inclusion bodies in vitro were isolated from the kidneys of five of 10 wild turkeys. A plaque assay system for viral infectivity was developed and used to characterize one of the wild turkey viruses (WTV). WTV replication was inhibited by 5-bromodeoxyuridine, indicating the virus contained DNA as its genetic material. Virus infectivity could be transferred only as viable whole cell preparations; one cycle of rapid freezing and thawing completely inactivated the virus. Typical herpes-like virions were found within the nuclei when cells infected with WTV were examined by electron microscopy. WTV had characteristics typical of the herpes group of viruses.  相似文献

We describe the isolation, development and application of seven microsatellite loci in the eastern wild turkey, Meleagris gallopavo silvestris, as well as their amplification and levels of polymorphism in the domestic turkey. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 5 to 15 and average heterozygosity was high for almost all loci. Domestic turkeys showed significantly reduced numbers of alleles per locus and overall heterozygosities when compared to eastern wild turkeys. The high variability in these markers should provide the level of resolution required to continue studies of wild turkey population genetics.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Plasmodium (Huffia) hermani sp. n. is described from wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo Linnaeus) in Florida. It produces rounded schizonts with 6–14 nuclei arranged peripherally as a rosette and elongate, slender gametocytes with irregular margins. Asexual stages parasitize all cells in the erythrocyte series and, in heavy infections, predominantly occur in erythroblasts and their precursors. Presence and degree of pigmentation vary with maturity of the host cell. Gametocytes occupy erythrocytes only, with pigment dispersed in black granules throughout the cytoplasm. Cells containing schizonts are often rounded and enlarged and those parasitized by gametocytes may be somewhat distorted in shape by lateral hypertrophy. Host cell nuclei may be displaced, but are not distorted, except slightly by pressure from the parasite. Plasmodium hermani differs from P. (Giovannolaia) durae by producing low level (> 6%), nonlethal parasitemias in turkey poults, an absence of phanerozoites in capillary endothelium of the brain and viscera, and inability to infect chicks. Plasmodium hermani is more like P. (Huffia) elongatum in gametocyte morphology, schizogony in all types of erythrocyte precursors, with gametocytes occurring in erythrocytes only, and concentration of schizonts in heavy infections in bone marrow and spleen. It differs from P. elongatum by its lack of infectivity to passeriform and anseriform hosts and by a strong immune response which develops in infected birds.  相似文献

From 1986 to 1989, sera from wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo), including three subspecies (M. gallopavo intermedia, M. gallopavo merriami and M. gallopavo mexicana) trapped in six western states were tested for antibody to Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) (n = 724), M. synoviae (MS) (n = 461) and M. meleagridis (MM) (n = 354) using the rapid plate agglutination (RPA) assay. Subsamples of these sera were also evaluated using the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay for antibody to MG (n = 664) and MS (n = 403). Attempts were made to isolate mycoplasmas by swabbing the trachea and cloaca of 190 live wild turkeys and from various tissues (sinus, nasal turbinates, trachea, lung, ovaries and oviduct) from 76 turkeys at necropsy. Isolates were identified using an immunobinding assay. Seroprevalence of MG, MS and MM in the RPA test was highly variable among years and geographic sites, ranging from 0 to 85%, 0 to 87%, and 0 to 83%, respectively, for each mycoplasma species. Of the 724 wild turkey sera tested, 200 (28%) were positive using the RPA assay, while only 20 (3%) of 664 sera tested using the HI assay were positive (at a titer greater than/= 1:80) for antibody to MG. Of the 461 sera tested 178 (39%) were RPA positive for MS, whereas none of the 403 samples tested by HI were positive for MS. Antibody to MM was detected in 72 (20%) of 354 turkey sera tested by RPA. Mycoplasmas were cultured from 81 (30%) of 266 wild turkeys, including 48 that were sampled live and 33 that were examined by necropsy. Mycoplasmas were isolated from every population in which culture was attempted. M. gallopavonis (MGP) was isolated from 37 (46%) of 81 birds which yielded mycoplasma, representing seven of 12 populations sampled. MG was isolated from lower respiratory tissues of one Rio Grande wild turkey trapped in Texas. M. synoviae was isolated from five of 16 Merriam's wild turkeys trapped in Arizona. Sera of birds from which MG or MS was isolated were positive to the respective antigen in the RPA test, but were negative by the HI assay. The RPA test was effective in identifying MG and MS infected turkeys despite lack of confirmation by the HI test. These data suggest that apparently healthy wild turkeys can carry pathogenic mycoplasmas and the currently used field test (RPA) can identify culture positive wild turkeys. Serological screening using the RPA test should be conducted on all wild turkeys prior to relocation.  相似文献

Sixty wild turkeys were necropsied following trapping, transporting and handling during the winters of 1980-1981, 1981-1982, and 1982-1983 in order to determine the incidence of subclinical capture myopathy. Gross lesions characterized by small to large patchy, pale white streaked areas within skeletal muscle were found in 13 of 27 birds trapped with a drop net in the winter of 1982-1983. Microscopic lesions within myocardium characterized by irregular areas of coagulative necrosis, collapse of intercellular stroma and myocardial nuclear proliferation were found in two of 14 birds in 1980-1981, five of 19 birds in 1981-1982 and 11 of 27 birds in 1982-1983. Microscopic lesions within skeletal muscle characterized by rhabdomyolysis were found in 16 of 19 birds in 1981-1982 and 25 of 27 birds in 1982-1983. These findings suggest that wild turkeys are susceptible to capture myopathy and particular caution should be exercised in capturing and handling these birds.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of estradiol benzoate (EB), progesterone (P), ovine prolactin (oPrl), or their combinations on temporal patterns of serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and Prl and on nesting behavior in adult ovariectomized female turkeys. Levels of serum LH were initially reduced (p greater than 0.05) by the steroid treatments, while continuation of treatments induced surges of LH to levels comparable to pretreatment levels. Administration of steroid increased (p less than 0.05) levels of serum Prl, which persisted until termination of treatments. Administration of oPrl had no effect on levels of serum LH but blunted the steroid-induced release of Prl. Neither EB, P, nor oPrl treatments alone nor a combination of EB + P elicited nest occupation. Nest occupation was observed after administration of P only in turkeys pretreated with EB. Administration of oPrl maintained and advanced the P-induced nesting to persistent nesting behavior (incubation behavior). Once persistent nesting behavior was established, hormonal treatments were terminated, yet nesting behavior was maintained and serum samples showed increasing levels of Prl and decreasing levels of LH. It is suggested that incubation behavior in the female turkey is facilitated by the combined action of estradiol, P, and Prl.  相似文献

An emaciated wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) exhibiting neurologic signs was found on Ossabaw Island, Chatham County, Georgia (USA) on 11 April 1989. The neurologic abnormalities observed included ataxia, drooping wings, head tremors, torticollis, and circling. At necropsy, discrete yellowish-white nodules, varying in size from 2 to 5 mm, were present in the spleen. White nodular lesions approximately 2 mm in diameter were observed beneath the mucosal surface of the distal esophagus. Histopathologic examination of the splenic nodules disclosed large numbers of primitive lymphoreticular cells with leptochromatic nuclei and abundant, slightly basophilic cytoplasms. The mitotic index in these cells was moderate to high. Similar neoplastic cells composed the masses observed in the esophagus. Multifocal, mild perivascular cuffing with mononuclear cells was found in the lumbar spinal cord, brain, and brain stem. Reticuloendotheliosis virus, subtype 3, was isolated from samples of the spleen and liver.  相似文献

Genetic differences within and among naturally occurring populations of wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) were characterized across five subspecies' historical ranges using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis, microsatellite loci and mitochondrial control region sequencing. Current subspecific designations based on morphological traits were generally supported by these analyses, with the exception of the eastern (M. g. silvestris) and Florida (M. g. osceola) subspecies, which consistently formed a single unit. The Gould's subspecies was both the most genetically divergent and the least genetically diverse of the subspecies. These genetic patterns were consistent with current and historical patterns of habitat continuity. Merriam's populations showed a positive association between genetic and geographical distance, Rio Grande populations showed a weaker association and the eastern populations showed none, suggesting differing demographic forces at work in these subspecies. We recommend managing turkeys to maintain subspecies integrity, while recognizing the importance of maintaining regional population structure that may reflect important adaptive variation.  相似文献

Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) were identified in the digestive tract of turkeys by electron microscopy. ICCs have been implicated as sources of pacemaking slow wave potentials that initiate peristalsis in the stomach and intestines in mammals. The gastroduodenal contraction cycle in turkeys, however, is uniquely coordinated by a neurogenic pacemaker in the isthmus area between the glandular stomach and the gizzard, and this controls the coordinated phasic contractions of the muscles of the gizzard, duodenum and glandular stomach. Thus, it becomes important to look for the presence and distribution of ICCs in the avian digestive tract, especially in the gizzard and duodenum. This investigation has identified that cells are present which contain the typical characteristics of ICCs including: numerous mitochondria, caveolae, thin processes, basement membrane, filaments, rough ER, Golgi, and occasional gap junctions. They were mostly located in the region of the myenteric plexus between the longitudinal and circular muscle layers and occasionally within the longitudinal muscle layer. They were frequently near nerve axon bundles and were usually surrounded by collagen, elastin fibers, and occasional fibroblasts or blood vessels. ICCs were easily found in the ileum, but were also present in the duodenum, cecum, and rectum. None were found in the serosal region of the thick muscle of the gizzard. The presence of ICCs in the turkey duodenum, which like the gizzard is under neurogenic control, suggests that ICCs may play a role(s) in addition to initiating peristalsis.  相似文献

Cytosolic progesterone receptors (PRcs) from the reproductive tract of the female turkey were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography using a diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) ion-exchange column. PRcs from oviduct tissue of laying, incubating, photorefractory and short-day turkey hens were compared. In general, three types of PRcs were identified: Receptor I, a partially displaceable species that was eluted at a 0.13 M salt concentration; and Receptors II and III, which were two specific binding species eluting at 0.23 M and 0.26 M, respectively. In the subdivided tissue from the laying hen oviduct, Receptor I was the major PRc species of the isthmus and Receptor III was the only receptor present in the uterus. The infundibulum and magnum each contained a small amount of Receptor II and a substantial amount of Receptor III. The whole oviduct of incubating hens contained a greater proportion of Receptor I than Receptor II or III, and these last two receptor types were present in equal quantity. The whole oviduct of the short-day hens had an equal distribution of the three receptor types. In the presence of sodium molybdate, an inhibitor of phosphatase and protease, only one sharp Receptor II species was seen in the magnum and uterus of the laying hen oviduct and in the whole oviducts of incubating and short-day hens. The transformation of Receptor II to Receptor III in the absence of sodium molybdate was facilitated by the aging of cytosol at 0-4 degrees C.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Samples were obtained from 65 unmedicated adult dogs, processed for isolation of Staphylococcus species and tested for susceptibility to penicillin G, gentamicin, oxacillin, tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole, streptomycin, ampicillin and rifampin. Forty-four isolates were obtained, which represents 67.7% of samples. Coagulase-negative species were most commonly found, and the most frequently isolated staphylococcus species were Staph. epidermidis and Staph. aureus. Other species, such as Staph. simulans, Staph. haemolyticus, Staph. saprophyticus and Staph. intermedius were also isolated. Resistance to antibiotics was frequently observed, with 90.9% of the isolates showing resistance to at least one drug. The most active antimicrobial agents against staphylococci isolated from otitis externa of dogs were rifampin and oxacillin. Multidrug resistance was a common finding, and one strain of Staph. haemolyticus species, was resistant to all tested antimicrobial agents. Resistance to three or more different drugs was a common finding, observed in 16 strains (36.4%) of both coagulase-positive and coagulase-negative staphylococci. This study highlights the emergence of cases of otitis externa determined by coagulase-negative staphylococcus strains and once more emphasizes the need for bacterial culture with species identification and susceptibility testing of swab specimens from the ear canal in order to choose appropriate antimicrobial agents.  相似文献

Wild turkeys (Meleagridis gallopavo silvestris) trapped as part of a relocation program by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission were tested for selected infectious diseases and parasites. The 45 birds were trapped at four locations in Pope, Scott, and Montgomery counties (Arkansas, USA). Forty-four blood samples for serology, 27 blood smears and 12 fecal samples were collected. Of the serum samples tested, 20 of 44 (45%) were positive for Pasteurella multocida by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), 42 of 44 (95%) were positive for Bordetella avium by ELISA, and 15 of 44 (34%) were positive for Newcastle disease virus antibody by the hemagglutination inhibition test. All serum samples were negative for Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Mycoplasma synoviae, avian paramyxovirus 3, avian influenza, hemorrhagic enteritis, Marek's disease, avian encephalomyelitis, laryngotracheitis, Salmonella pullorum and Salmonella gallinarum. Haemoproteus meleagridis was found in eight of 27 (30%) and Leucocytozoon smithi in nine of 27 (33%) blood smears; all smears were negative for Plasmodium hermani. Enteric parasites included Ascaridia dissimilis, Heterakis gallinarum, Eimeria dispersa and Raillietina spp. This study was an attempt to document the health status and disease exposure of wild turkeys in Arkansas to aid in managing and preventing the spread of disease agents to wild turkeys and other species of birds.  相似文献

A moribund wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) died shortly after it was discovered in Martin County, North Carolina (USA). The 4.3-kg female turkey appeared in good condition with no visible external lesions or evidence of injury. There were 2- to 5-mm yellow-white plaques on the mucosal surfaces of the oral cavity and mid-esophagus. The liver had large, multifocal, irregular pale areas on cut and uncut surfaces. The spleen contained multifocal, pale, hard, nodules. Microscopic changes in the liver consisted of large multifocal coalescing areas of necrosis. Occasional spherical 10 to 15 microns in diameter organisms consistent with Histomonas meleagridis were present in the necrotic areas. Viable hepatic parenchyma contained multifocal infiltrations of numerous mononuclear cells interpreted as neoplastic cells resembling lymphoblasts and plasma cells. Similar neoplastic cell infiltrates, consistent with the lymphoproliferative disease reticuloendotheliosis, were present in spleen, lung, and esophageal and oral mucosa. Reticuloendotheliosis virus, subtype 2, was isolated from samples of liver and spleen.  相似文献

To determine what role pituitary responsiveness plays in the suppression of gonadotropin level during incubation in the turkey, the ability of the pituitary to release luteinizing hormone (LH) in response to luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) was compared in incubating, laying, and photorefractory birds. In all three groups, the i.m. injection of LHRH (4 micrograms/kg) increased serum LH levels; however, the LH response was markedly enhanced in the incubating turkeys as compared with the laying (6.6-fold increase over preinjection levels vs. 1.9-fold; p less than 0.05) or the photorefractory birds (9.7-fold vs. 3.1-fold; p less than 0.05). The LHRH-induced LH release was also determined in turkeys as they shifted from the laying to the incubating phase of the reproductive cycle. This response increased (p less than 0.05) in magnitude as the birds started to incubate. The high prolactin level of incubating turkeys does not have a depressing effect on LHRH-stimulated LH release; thus, impaired LH response to LHRH is not a mechanism involved in the diminished gonadotropin secretion of incubating turkeys.  相似文献

Sequence similarity was used to predict the position of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) in the genome of the turkey (Meleagris gallopavo). Turkey EST sequences were compared with the draft assembly of the chicken whole-genome sequence and the chicken EST database by BLASTN. Among the 877 ESTs examined, 788 had significant matches in the chicken genome sequence. Position of orthologous sequences in the chicken genome and the predicted position of the EST loci in the turkey genome are presented Genetic assignments suggest a high level of accuracy for the COMPASS predictions.  相似文献

The short-term effects of diet on jejunal growth, alanine transport rate, and leucine aminopeptidase activity (LAP) were compared in the domestic and wild turkey poult. One-day-old poults of each strain were fed diets of high vs., low protein, with carbohydrate varied to maintain isocaloric conditions. Prior to feeding, relative jejunal mass and alanine transport rates were not significantly different in the two turkey strains, whereas LAP activity was 270% higher in wild poults. After feeding for 72 h, relative jejunal mass doubled in both turkey strains. In domestic turkeys, alanine transport rate and LAP activity were reduced by approximately 42% and 25%, respectively, in poults fed a 24% protein-69% carbohydrate diet vs. a 49% protein-35% carbohydrate diet. Analysis of the combined data from feeding experiments revealed that alanine transport rate was not correlated with total food, protein or lipid intake, but was negatively correlated with carbohydrate consumption (P<0.05). In wild turkeys, neither alanine transport rate nor LAP activity were altered by diet. These results reveal that domestic turkey hatchlings can modulate protein digestive and absorptive functions as protein/carbohydrate composition of the diet changes and suggest that high dietary carbohydrate down-regulates the intestinal alanine transporter.  相似文献

Highly extensible ligaments connect the neural spines of successive vertebrae in the proximal part of the neck in birds. Their elastic properties, and their lengths in different neck positions, have been investigated in experiments on turkeys. Their properties are very similar to those of the ligamentum nuchae of artiodactyls. They are stretched to large strains when the head is lowered but do not develop sufficient force to support the extended head and neck without the aid of muscles.  相似文献
