Parasites impose an energetic cost upon their hosts, yet, paradoxically instances have been reported in which infection is associated with enhanced, rather than diminished, host growth rates. Field studies of these parasite effects are problematic, since the pre-infection condition of the hosts is generally unknown. Here, we describe a laboratory experiment in which the growth rate and body condition of 76 laboratory-reared three-spined stickleback fishes were examined before, during and after each fish was fed the infective stage of the parasitic cestode Schistocephalus solidus. Twenty-one of these fishes went on to become infected by the cestode. Fishes were individually housed and provided with an abundant food supply to eliminate the potentially masking effects of variable competitive ability. Infection occurred independently of fish gender, size, body condition or pre-exposure growth rate. After exposure to the cestode, infected fishes grew faster (excluding parasite weight) and maintained a similar or better body condition compared with uninfected fishes, despite developing enlarged spleens. The accelerated growth could not be explained by reduced gonadal development. This result, one of few demonstrations of parasite-associated growth enhancement in fishes, is discussed with respect to other such parasite systems.  相似文献

We observed the behavior and ecology of Chaetodon capistratus infected and uninfected with the ectoparasitic isopod Anilocra chaetodontis to assess whether there may be parasite induced alterations in host biology, host defenses against infection, and/or pathology related to infection. We also examined habitat related differences in infection rates. Infected fish had higher rates of interaction with conspecifics and spent more time in low flow environments (which might improve transmission of juvenile parasites to new hosts). Butterfly fish without isopods were chased more frequently by damselfishes, fed more, and had larger territories. Time spent near conspecifics, and fish condition and gonadosomatic index did not vary between infected and uninfected fish. These results suggest that foureye butterfly fish behavior is altered by the isopod parasite in order for the isopods to more easily gain mates or transmit offspring to new hosts.  相似文献

Diagnosis of myxosporean Myxobolus rotundus infection was conducted by examining skin mucus from the infected crucian carp Carassius auratus auratus with a monoclonal antibody, MAb 2D12, raised previously against the parasite. A positive reaction was observed in skin mucus collected from infected fish, and spores and pre-spore stages of the parasite were identified by the MAb 2D12. It was also demonstrated that M. rotundus infection can be successfully detected by a simple method, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and that skin mucus collected from infected fish skin had a significantly higher optical density (OD) value than that from uninfected fish.  相似文献

Parasites may be an important component of early life mortality in fishes, but assigning part of total mortality to parasites is difficult. The Chapman-Robson mortality estimator is a robust and potentially valuable way to quantify the added mortality of parasites when age data are available. We used daily age data and the Chapman-Robson catch-curve procedure to estimate daily mortality for 15 years in juvenile age-0 shortnose suckers (Chasmistes brevirostris), and for 6 years, the daily mortality of fish with and without black spot infection, a trematode whose final host is a piscivorous bird. Infected fish always had higher mortality rates than uninfected fish, and for 3 years when those differences were significant, the added daily mortality for infected fish was 3.6–3.7 %. Based on the proportion infected each year, and for durations of 15–50 d, juvenile populations were 18.3–38.6 % lower than they would have been without black spot infections. There were no significant differences in growth between infected and uninfected fish in most years and little indication of a direct metabolic impact of infections. Thus, this added mortality, primarily in July and August, seemed unlikely to be an indirect result of infection and was most likely due to predation. The source of that predation is unknown but the parasite’s final hosts, piscivorous birds, seemed the most obvious candidate for this added mortality.  相似文献

A quantitative assessment of the demand by the parasite Schistocephalus solidus (Miiller, 1776) upon its secondary host, Gasterosteus aculentus L., was obtained by comparing the energy budgets for infected and non-infected fish. Observations on the energy trans-formations during feeding, assimilation, growth and respiration of fishes indicated some overall effects of the parasite upon host metabolism.
Infection resulted in a greater depletion of host food reserws, shown by a marked in-crease in mortality of parasitized fish during starvation. When fed ad libitum upon Tubifex , differences were recorded in the feeding and assimilation rates of fish. By comparison, no significant differences were detected in the respiratory expenditure of infected and non-infected hosts. The computation of energy budgets indicated that fish bearing parasites characteristically exhibited a higher gross efficiency than did fish without parasites. How-ever, subtraction of the calculated effect due to the presence of worms, suggested that the efficiency of infected fish alone, that is, without their parasites, was actually lower than the efficiency of uninfected fish. It is considered therefore that the apparent greater energy turnover in a parasitized fish is due to the parasite being more efficient in its energy trans-formations than is its host.  相似文献

The presence of Trichinella spiralis infection in groups of male mice caused behavioural changes in both infected and uninfected mice. Also, for some behaviours, the extent of behavioural change in infected mice appeared to be determined by the number of muscle larvae they harboured. Infected mice showed a reduced frequency of exploratory and social behaviours compared with uninfected mice while uninfected mice performed more social investigatory activities towards those that were infected. Social interactions between infected and uninfected mice were also affected by familiarity. Behavioural differences shown to result from infection in mice familiar with each other were similar but more pronounced when the mice were unfamiliar. These results suggest that other factors may influence the behavioural effects of parasites on their hosts. For some behaviours, the greatest alterations in behaviour apparently caused by infection coincided with the period of infectivity to another host. The significance of this in relation to parasite transmission is considered.  相似文献

Yellow perch Perca flavescens were collected from a contaminated site and a reference site in the St. Lawrence River, Quebec, Canada. Fish were assessed for oxidative stress (lipid peroxidation and reduced glutathione levels) and parasitism by the nematode Raphidascaris acus and metacercariae of the digenean Apophallus brevis. Lipid peroxidation is not only considered a measure of oxidative stress, but of stress in general, and thus serves as an indicator of fish health. Fish from the contaminated site exhibited higher levels of lipid peroxidation than those from the reference site, independent of parasitic infections. However, fish infected with R. acus at the contaminated site tended to have higher levels of lipid peroxidation than uninfected fish at the same site, whereas no difference was observed between infected and uninfected fish at the reference site. Yellow perch infected with > 10 metacercariae of A. brevis expressed higher levels of lipid peroxidation than those infected with < 10 metacercariae at both the contaminated and the reference sites. No differences were found in levels of reduced glutathione in liver or muscle in relation to site or either parasite species. Results support the use of lipid peroxidation as a biomarker of water contamination. They further suggest that lipid peroxidation may be used as a biomarker of pathological effects caused by parasitism. Most importantly, results demonstrate that contaminants and parasites occurring together exacerbate oxidative stress in fish, suggesting that parasitized fish in polluted environments are in a poorer state of health than uninfected fish.  相似文献

Transmission of Cryptobia salmositica occurred when infected and uninfected rainbow trout were held in the same tank. In tanks where infected and uninfected fish were allowed to mix freely, 67–80% of the uninfected fish acquired detectable infections by the 27th week. None of the control fish in another tank was infected. In another tank where the infected and uninfected fish were separated by a wire screen, 9 of 20 uninfected fish acquired detectable infections by the 22nd week. This is the first demonstration of direct transmission of a hemoflagellate via the water medium in aquatic vertebrates. Cryptobia salmositica was found in the mucus on the body surface of 9 of 10 fish examined 6 weeks after infection. These parasites were infective and some of them were morphologically similar to those in the blood or peritoneal fluid. It is suggested that the vascular species of Cryptobia were originally ectoparasitic on fishes and that these ectoparasitic species were descended from the free-living Procryptobia.  相似文献

Parasites with a complex life cycle are supposed to influence the behaviour of their intermediate host in such a way that the transmission to the final host is enhanced, but reduced to non-hosts. Here, we examined whether the trophically transmitted bird parasite Polymorphus minutus increases the antipredator response of its intermediate host, the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex to fish cues, i.e. non-host cues (‘increased host abilities hypothesis’). Aggregation behaviour and reduced activity are assumed to decrease the predation risk of gammarids by fishes. Uninfected G. pulex are known to aggregate in the presence of a fish predator. In the present study, gammarids were allowed to choose either to join a group of conspecifics or to stay solitary (experiment 1) or between two groups differing in infection status (experiment 2), both in the presence or absence of fish odour. The perception of the groups was limited to mainly olfactory cues. Contrary to the ‘increased host abilities hypothesis’, in infected gammarids of experiment 1, fish cues induced similar aggregation behaviour as in their uninfected conspecifics. In experiment 2, uninfected as well as infected gammarids did not significantly discriminate between infected and uninfected groups. Although only uninfected gammarids reduced their activity in the presence of predator cues, infected G. pulex were generally less active than uninfected conspecifics. This might suggest that P. minutus manipulates rather the general anti-predator behaviour than the plastic response to predation risk.  相似文献

The content of 5 macroelements and 5 microelements were analyzed using the atomic absorption method in muscle samples of European eels infected and uninfected by Anguillicola crasus. The mean contents of these substances in infected eels were statistically highly significantly lower in Ca, P, Fe, Mn, but only statistically significantly lower in Na, Mg, Zn and Cu as compared to uninfected fishes. These differences are discussed in relation to hematophagus feeding and pathogenity of the parasite.  相似文献

Parasites often impair the reproduction of their hosts, one well known case being the cestode Schistocephalus solidus which is a common parasite in three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus. One of the possible ways that this could be exerted is by suppression on the brain-pituitary-gonadal (BPG) axis. In this study, mRNA levels of FSH-β and LH-β and of GnRH2 (cGnRH II) and GnRH3 (sGnRH) were measured via Q-PCR in infected and uninfected fish sampled from the field a few weeks before the onset of breeding. The pituitary mRNA levels of both FSH-β and LH-β were higher in infected males than in uninfected males. Also in females, FSH-β mRNA levels were higher in infected individuals than in others, whereas there was no significant difference found in LH-β expression. Brain mRNA levels of GnRH3 were higher in infected fish than in uninfected fish in both sexes, but no difference was found in GnRH2 mRNA levels. Thus, infection by S. solidus was able to alter the expressions not only of gonadotropins (GtHs), but also of GnRH which has not been observed previously. However, the effects are opposite to what should be expected if the parasite suppressed reproduction via actions on the brain-pituitary level. The gonads are perhaps more likely to be impaired by the parasites in other ways, and changed feedbacks on the BPG axis could then lead to the increases in GtHs and GnRH.  相似文献

Three hundred and sixty-nine cod Gadus morhua were individually marked and caged for 19 months. During this period, each cod was inspected several times for Lernaeocera branchialis . Growth in four groups of cod, identified by their infection history, were compared. During the caging, 79% of the cod remained uninfected, 8·5% were infected, but lost the parasite, 8% were infected with one parasite and 4·5% were infected with more than one parasite. The infected fish either harboured the parasite at caging or were infected during the study period. The highest rate of increase, both in body mass and in standard length ( L S), was recorded in the group of male fish infected with one parasite throughout the experimental period. Conversely, those males free from infection showed significantly lower growth. The observed differences in growth could not be explained by changes in variables related to reproductive strategies. The alternative explanation for these results is that resistance to L. branchialis was associated with costs in terms of reduced growth of body mass and L S.  相似文献

Ichthyophonus hoferi Plehn & Mulsow, 1911, is a cosmopolitan, protistan pathogen of marine fishes. It is prevalent in mature returning Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in the Yukon River watershed, and may be associated with prespawning mortality. We developed and evaluated a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for I. hoferi using primers specific to the parasite's small subunit rDNA. The test has a minimum detection limit of approximately 10(-5) parasite spores per reaction and does not cross-react with the closely related salmon parasites Dermocystidium salmonis or Sphaerothecum destruens. Sensitivity and specificity of the PCR test used on somatic muscle and heart tissue for detecting infected fish were determined using 334 Chinook salmon collected from the Yukon River at 2 locations (Tanana and Emmonak) in 2003 and 2004. The true infection status of the fish was determined by testing somatic muscle, heart and kidney tissue using histological evaluation, culture, and PCR. The severity of infection was grouped into 2 categories, light and heavy infection. The probability of detecting a heavily infected fish (sensitivity of the test) was generally much higher than the probability of detecting light infection, suggesting that more than one tissue and/or method should be used to accurately detect light or early infection by I. hoferi. The probability of correctly identifying a negative fish (specificity of the test) was always greater than 94% regardless of the tissue used, infection severity, sampling site or year of collection.  相似文献

Host biodiversity can impact disease risk and influence the transmission of parasitic disease. Stream sediment-dwelling worms, Tubifex tubifex (Clitellata: Oligochaeta), are the definitive host of the parasite Myxobolus cerebralis (Myxozoa: Myxosporea), which causes whirling disease in salmonid fishes. Genetic diversity of T. tubifex is correlated with host susceptibility to M. cerebralis , and mitochondrial Lineage III is generally shown to be more likely to be infected and produce the triactinomyxon (TAM) spores than other lineages. We determined the mitochondrial lineage, relative abundance, and prevalence of infection of T. tubifex collected at 3 sites in the Madison River, Montana, where previous study had shown variation in whirling disease prevalence and severity in caged trout fry. We also compared visual identification of TAMs released from cultured worms with a molecular genetic assay (diagnostic polymerase chain reaction [PCR]) for parasite detection of both infected and uninfected worms. We estimated that mitochondrial Lineage III was most abundant at the site previously shown to have high fish disease and was also most likely to be infected. The 2 techniques for detecting parasite infection did not always agree, and the likelihood of PCR (+) and spore (-) was not significantly different from PCR (-) and spore (+). Differences in the relative infection prevalence for these 2 lineages may explain the wide range of infection in natural streams.  相似文献

Artificially reared Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus fry (post yolk‐sac stage) from Skibotnelva in northern Norway were exposed to infection with the monogenean ectoparasite Gyrodactylus salaris to determine if the parasite caused mortality in fry. About 95% of the fry became infected within the first week post‐exposure, and at the end of the experiment (77 days) all fry carried the parasite. Mortality rate was significantly higher in the groups of infected fry than in the uninfected control groups, and when the experiment was terminated c. 30% of the infected and 8% of the uninfected fish had died. Gyrodactylus salaris had a pronounced negative effect upon fry survival and caused an additive host mortality. Moreover, the concurrent temporal changes in parasite intensities and aggregation indicated that the parasite‐induced host mortality was density dependent.  相似文献

The pelagic larval stage is a critical component of the life cycle of most coral reef fishes, but the adaptive significance of this stage remains controversial. One hypothesis is that migrating through the pelagic environment reduces the risk a larval fish has of being parasitised. Most organisms interact with parasites, often with significant, detrimental consequences for the hosts. However, little is known about the parasites that larval fish have upon settlement, and the factors that affect the levels of parasitism. At settlement, coral reef fishes vary greatly in size and age (pelagic larval duration), which may influence the degree of parasitism. We identified and quantified the parasites of pre-settlement larvae from 44 species of coral reef fishes from the Great Barrier Reef and explored their relationship with host size and age at settlement, and phylogeny. Overall, less than 50% of the larval fishes were infected with parasites, and over 99% of these were endoparasites. A Bayesian phylogenetic regression was used to analyse host-parasite (presence and intensity) associations. The analysis showed parasite presence was not significantly related to fish size, and parasite intensity was not significantly related to fish age. A phylogenetic signal was detected for both parasite presence and intensity, indicating that, overall, closely related fish species were likely to have more similar susceptibility to parasites and similar levels of parasitism when compared to more distantly related species. The low prevalence of infection with any parasite type and the striking rarity of ectoparasites is consistent with the ‘parasite avoidance hypothesis’, which proposes that the pelagic phase of coral reef fishes results in reduced levels of parasitism.

The influence of infection with trematode metacercariae on some physiological and biochemical characteristics has been studied in the underyearlings of roach. The parameters that were studied are found to depend on the parasite localization. The body length and weight values of infected underyearlings with muscular localization of metacercariae are lower than in uninfected fish and the glycogen content is higher. On the contrary, individuals with infected eyes display greater body length and weight when coupled with lower glycogen content in comparison with parasite-free fish. The infection with metacercariae has no effect on the activity of glycosidases. Different glycogen levels in the underyearlings with muscular and ocular localization of metacercariae are presumably linked with the locomotor activity of the fish.  相似文献

When choosing between shoals differing in Schistocephalus solidus infection status, uninfected test sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus showed a preference for joining uninfected conspecifics when shoal sizes were equal, but reversed this preference when the relative size of the infected shoal was increased by a factor of 3. When given a choice between a shoal composed of size-matched minnows Phoxinus phoxinus and a shoal composed of the same number of all uninfected or all S. solidus -infected sticklebacks, test fish always preferred the sticklebacks, regardless of their infection status, over the minnow shoal. These observations suggest that species, parasite status and shoal size are all of importance when fish decide which shoal to join.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of a study of the effects of Schistocephalus solidus on one of its intermediate hosts, the stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus , in an annual population in which infection is known to occur in one major wave in autumn. Weight, as a function of length, was lower in infected sticklebacks compared with uninfected fish during autumn and spring; in winter and summer, both categories of fish were in equally poor condition. In early autumn, the hepatosomatic indices of newly infected fish were higher than those of uninfected fish, perhaps due to a pathological response. Thereafter, relative liver size of uninfected and infected sticklebacks was comparable until spring, when it increased sharply in uninfected sticklebacks but remained stable at a low level in infected sticklebacks. Few infected fish reached maturity. The only males to attain maturity whilst sustaining an infection of S. solidus were in particularly good condition. Nuptial coloration, kidney hypertrophy and testes size were unimpaired in these mature infected males, but whether they were capable of successful reproduction remains debatable.  相似文献

The swimbladder parasite, Anguillicola crassus has infected, and spread rapidly, through European eel Anguilla anguilla (L.) populations over the past 20 to 25 yr. Our aim in the present studies was to elucidate whether the presence of A. crassus in these eels alters their rapid physiological responses to an acute temperature increase, compared to the response of uninfected fish. Both infected and uninfected fish showed significant increases in plasma cortisol after 2 h at a raised environmental temperature with increased plasma glucose after 6 h. However, infected eels exhibited a slight lag in glucose mobilisation, which may be due to the metabolic cost of harbouring a sanguiverous parasite. Both infected and uninfected fish showed a significant increase in haematocrit after 6 h of temperature elevation, but only uninfected fish exhibited a significant increase in haemoglobin at this point. However, there were no significant changes in mean erythrocyte haemoglobin concentration in either group. Our results suggest that acute temperature increase alone is unlikely to cause significant mortality of A. crassus-infected European eels; however, the effects of chronic increases in temperature in combination with other factors such as toxicants and hypoxia requires examination.  相似文献
