Temporal variation in selection is typically evaluated by estimating and comparing selection coefficients in natural populations. Meta‐analyses of these coefficients have yielded important insights, but selection coefficients are limited in several respects, including low statistical power, imperfect fitness surrogates, and uncertainty regarding consequences for trait change. A complementary approach without these limitations is to examine temporal variation in adaptive traits themselves, which is mechanistically easier and more directly relevant to evolutionary consequences. We illustrate this approach by analyzing the colour patterns of male guppies, Poecilia reticulata, from each of six sites in Trinidad in each of 6 years. This system is particularly appropriate for our study because key aspects of colour variation are genetically‐based and responsive to selection. However, although spatial patterns of colour variation have been extensively considered in this system, no study has yet formally assessed annual temporal variation in non‐manipulated populations. Matching previous conclusions for the guppy system, we find that guppies from different sites manifest different colour patterns in association with different predation regimes. We here add the new finding that, although some temporal variation is present, spatial patterns of colour variation are generally consistent across years. These results suggest that, when considering adaptive traits, spatial variation is more important than temporal variation, although our study system might be exceptional in this regard. Additional studies examining spatiotemporal variation in adaptive traits could help to improve our understanding of the role that spatiotemporal variation in selection plays in the evolutionary process. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 112 , 108–122.  相似文献

The degree of plasticity an individual expresses when moving into a new environment is likely to influence the probability of colonization and potential for subsequent evolution. Yet few empirical examples exist where the ancestral and derived conditions suggest a role for plasticity in adaptive genetic divergence of populations. Here we explore the genetic and plastic components of shoaling behaviour in two pairs of populations of Poecilia reticulata (Trinidadian guppies). We contrast shoaling behaviour of guppies derived from high‐ and low‐predation populations from two separate drainages by measuring the shoaling response of second generation laboratory‐reared individuals in the presence and absence of predator induced alarm pheromones. We find persistent differences in mean shoaling cohesion that suggest a genetic basis; when measured under the same conditions high‐predation guppies form more cohesive shoals than low‐predation guppies. Both high and low‐predation guppies also exhibit plasticity in the response to alarm pheromones, by forming tighter, more cohesive shoals. These patterns suggest a conserved capacity for adaptive behavioural plasticity when moving between variable predation communities that are consistent with models of genetic accommodation.  相似文献

The trade‐offs involved in allocating carotenoid pigments and food to healing and regrowing damaged caudal fin tissue v . other functions were examined in guppies Poecilia reticulata , a species in which females prefer males that display larger amounts of carotenoids in their skin. The guppies were derived from four natural populations in Trinidad that differed in resource availability but not predation intensity. Carotenoids, food and site of origin did not affect either absolute or relative fin regrowth, which suggested that fin regeneration in guppies was not constrained by carotenoid availability. It is possible that carotenoid intake influences fin regeneration in the presence of natural stressors such as predators. There was a significant negative interaction between food level in the laboratory and resource availability in the field: males from low‐resource‐availability sites regrew more fin tissue when raised on the high food level, and males from high‐resource‐availability sites regrew more fin tissue when raised on the low food level. The direction of this interaction runs counter to theoretical expectations.  相似文献

In the laboratory, courtship behavior and carotenoid pigmentation of male guppies are condition-dependent traits, since their expression is affected by physical vigor and environmental factors such as water velocity and diet. Whether these relationships exist in guppies under field conditions is yet to be determined. We compared the swimming performance, courtship behavior, and carotenoid pigmentation of guppies from headwater and downstream localities in four rivers of Trinidad. Swimming performance and courtship behavior of males differed among rivers and between headwater and downstream sites. Guppies from headwater sites swam significantly faster and had higher display rates than those from downstream sites. Mean swimming performance across sites was positively correlated with mean water velocity, but was correlated with the number of orange color spots (carotenoid pigment) in only one river. These results indicate that the courtship behavior of Trinidadian guppies is condition-dependent because the amount of display behavior is positively correlated to swimming performance, a measure of physical endurance. The proximal cause for this condition-dependence may be predator induced variation in microhabitat use by guppies in headwater and downstream locations.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity, the ability of a single genotype to produce different phenotypes under different environmental conditions, plays a profound role in several areas of evolutionary biology. One important role is as an adaptation to a variable environment. While plasticity is extremely well documented in response to many environmental factors, there is controversy over how much of that plasticity is adaptive. Evidence is also mixed over how often conspecific populations display qualitative differences in the nature of plasticity. We present data on the reaction norms of growth and maturation to variation in temperature and salinity in male and female sailfin mollies (Poecilia latipinna) from three locally adjacent populations from South Carolina (SC). We compare these reaction norms to those previously reported in locally adjacent populations from north Florida (NF). In general, patterns of plasticity in fish from SC were similar to those in fish from NF. The magnitude of plasticity differed; fish from SC displayed less plasticity than fish from NF. This was because SC fish grew faster and matured earlier at the lower temperatures and salinities compared to NF fish. This is a countergradient pattern of variation, in which SC fish grew faster and matured earlier in conditions that would otherwise slow growth and delay maturity. Among fish from both regions, males were much less plastic than females, especially for length at maturity. While there was no detectable heterogeneity among populations from NF, males from one of the SC populations, which is furthest from the other two, displayed a qualitatively different response in age at maturity to temperature variation than did males from the other two SC populations. The pattern of population variation in plasticity within and among regions suggests that gene flow, which diminishes with distance in sailfin mollies, plays a critical role in constraining divergence in norms of reaction.  相似文献

Secondary sexual traits of male guppies show remarkable geographic variation, and male guppies can flexibly change the conspicuousness of their sexual traits within a few generations when they are introduced into new habitats. We examined the degree of conspicuousness and heritabilities of male secondary sexual traits in a feral guppy population in Okinawa, a subtropical island of Japan. Male guppies in this population showed high variation of their sexual traits such as dorsal and caudal fin lengths and red-orange color spot patterns on their bodies. Offspring–parent regressions revealed significant heritabilities of male body size, dorsal and caudal fin lengths, and the number and relative area of orange spots. Especially, the high heritability of the relative orange spot area of sons compared to that of fathers suggests some Y chromosome-linked contribution of the trait. On the other hand, coloration (hue and saturation) of orange spots did not show significant inheritance, probably because most components of orange spot coloration may be condition-dependent traits. These results compared with previous work in native guppy populations suggest female mate preferences based upon these male secondary sexual traits and low predation pressure in this population. Populations of the guppy Poecilia reticulata from six locations in N. Trinidad were examined by starch gel electrophoresis to estimate their degree of genetic divergence. Variability at seven enzyme-coding loci demonstrated that populations differed markedly in allele frequencies with some allelic substitution between sites (for 23 loci, Nei's mean genetic identity, Ī ranged from 0.869–1.00; the coefficient of gene differentiation, G ST= 0.086; and the absolute differentiation between populations, m= 0.044). There was a good correspondence between degree of physical isolation and extent of genetic differentiation, as exemplified by the partitioning of gene diversity (Nei's gene diversity analysis = 66% between river basins; 32% within river basins; 2% within rivers), though there was considerable variability in the contribution of individual loci. Most populations were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and any significant deviations were due exclusively to heterozygote deficiencies. The patterns of population differentiation are discussed in relation to probable past geological and historical events, and present-day evolutionary forces. Notable among these are previous continental land connections, periodic immigration from N.E. South America, and post-colonization events including differential predation, sexual selection, apparent restricted vagility and small effective population sizes.  相似文献

In sexually polymorphic plant species the extent of gender divergence in floral morphology and phenology may be influenced by gender‐specific selection patterns imposed by pollinators, which may change geographically. Distribution margins are areas where changes in the pollinator fauna, and thus variation in gender divergence of floral traits, are expected. We tested for pollination‐driven geographic variation in the gender divergence in floral and phenological traits in the gynodioecious shrub Daphne laureola, in core and marginal areas differing in the identity of the main pollinator. Pollinators selected for longer corolla tubes in hermaphrodite individuals only in core populations, which in turn recorded higher fruit set. Consistent with these phenotypic selection patterns, gender divergence in flower corolla length was higher in core populations. Moreover, pollinators selected towards delayed flowering on hermaphrodite individuals only in marginal populations, where the two sexes differed more in flowering time. Our results support that a shift in main pollinators is able to contribute to geographic variation in the gender divergence of sexually polymorphic plant species.  相似文献

The evolution of group-living has been at the heart of behavioral ecology, since the inception of this discipline in the mid 1960's. Here, we provide the first evidence for a direct fitness benefit accrued when an individual is paired with a conspecific that has recently interacted with a predator. Male guppies have a significantly higher probability of surviving encounters with a predator when paired with a partner that has survived a recent encounter with a predator versus a predator-naive partner (χ2 = 7.43, df = 1, P = 0.006). Furthermore, guppies prefer to associate with conspecifics that have recently encountered predators over inexperienced partners (one-tailed binomial test, P = 0.026). Increased survival as a function of interactions with partners that have survived an encounter with a predator, coupled with a preference for such partners, adds a new and important component to the benefits of living in social groups.  相似文献

Ultraviolet (UV) vision is well documented for many speciesof vertebrates. UV cues are known to be used in foraging, navigationand in mate choice. We conducted a series of behavioral experimentsto investigate the role of UV perception in mate choice inboth female and male guppies (Poecilia reticulata). In ourexperiments the visual appearance of potential mates was manipulatedusing either UV transmitting (UV+) or UV blocking (UV-) filters.Female guppies significantly preferred UV+ males. Male guppiestended to prefer UV- females, but their preferences were marginallynonsignificant. Further experiments investigating the roleof luminance, indicate that UV wavelengths are probably beingused for color discrimination rather than for detecting differencesin brightness. These experiments raise the possibility thatUV is used in mate assessment in different ways by male andfemale guppies. This may reflect the different strategies thatthe two sexes have in order to maximize reproductive success.To our knowledge, these are the first data showing that UVis used by any fish species in mate selection.  相似文献

Recent experimental work on guppies (Poecilia reticulata) hasexamined the strength of genetic and cultural (copying) factorsin determining female mate choice. Using females from a populationwith a heritable preference for the amount of orange body colorpossessed by males, prior work discovered that a threshold differencein orange color among males existed below which females wouldchoose a less orange male if they observed another female choosethat male, but above which they consistently preferred the moreorange of the males, regardless of whether they viewed anotherfemale prefer the less orange male. I tested whether this thresholdcan be shifted by increasing the amount of mate-copying informationavailable to a female. I demonstrate that when a female hasthe opportunity to see two different model females independentlyprefer the less orange of two males or a single female neara drab male for a longer period of time (twice as long as inprior work), the observer female prefers this drab male evenwhen males dramatically differ in orange coloration.  相似文献

Females that mate multiply have the possibility to exert postcopulatory choice and select more compatible sperm to fertilize eggs. Prior work suggests that dissimilarity in major histocompatibility complex (MHC) plays an important role in determining genetic compatibility between partners. Favouring a partner with dissimilar MHC alleles would result in offspring with high MHC diversity and therefore with enhanced survival thanks to increased resistance to pathogens and parasites. The high variability of MHC genes may further allow discrimination against the sperm from related males, reducing offspring homozygosity and inbreeding risk. Despite the large body of work conducted at precopulatory level, the role of MHC similarity between partners at postcopulatory level has been rarely investigated. We used an internal fertilizing fish with high level of multiple matings (Poecilia reticulata) to study whether MHC similarity plays a role in determining the outcome of fertilization when sperm from two males compete for the same set of eggs. We also controlled for genomewide similarity by determining similarity at 10 microsatellite loci. Contrary to prediction, we found that the more MHC‐similar male sired more offspring while similarity at the microsatellite loci did not predict the outcome of sperm competition. Our results suggest that MHC discrimination may be involved in avoidance of hybridization or outbreeding rather than inbreeding avoidance. This, coupled with similar findings in salmon, suggests that the preference for MHC‐dissimilar mates is far from being unanimous and that pre‐ and postcopulatory episodes of sexual selection can indeed act in opposite directions.  相似文献

Guppies were sampled from eight populations representing four river drainage basins in northern Trinidad, and from one population on the nearby island of Tobago. For each individual, a 465 base pair (bp) segment of the control region of the mitochondrial genome was sequenced. The resulting DNA sequences were subjected to sequence divergence calculations and the populations were linked by maximum parsimony analysis to determine their phylogenetic relationships. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variation was found both within and between river drainages, correlated with the geographic features of northern Trinidad. The variation observed exists primarily between drainages, particularly between the Oropuche drainage and all other Trinidad drainages examined. Estimates of time of divergence between guppy populations of different drainages, based on mtDNA sequence variation, ranged from 100,000 to 200,000 for the most recently separated populations and from 600,000 to 1.2 million years between the Oropuche populations and all others examined. Examination of fish from northeastern South America will be required to determine whether these populations differentiated in their present locations or were the result of separate invasions of Trinidad from different Venezuelan sources. However, genetic isolation of these populations appears to predate the current physical separation of the island of Trinidad from the Venezuelan mainland.  相似文献

Triclosan (TCS), a chemical used for its antibacterial properties, is an ingredient in many detergents, soaps, deodorants, cosmetics, antimicrobial creams, toothpastes, and an additive in various plastics and textiles. The behavioral changes at different TCS concentrations (0.001–0.002–0.005–0.01–0.02–0.05–0.1–0.2–0.5 mg/L) were determined for the each test organisms in the study. The synthetic freshwater has temperature 20 ± 2°C, dissolved oxygen 7.0 ± 2 mg/L, pH 7.0–8.0. All experiments were replicated three times, in 14 h light, 10 h dark incubations, 10 fishes were put to each aquarium. In hourly and daily observations, times of dead and number for Poecilia reticulata, Danio rerio were recorded. Behavioral changes of Poecilia reticulata and Danio rerio were observed, such as fast-moving, uncontrolled swimming, trying to escape out of the water, vertical action to the water surface, loss of balance, respiratory difficulties, chills, and inversion.  相似文献

Sperm competition is taxonomically widespread in animals and is usually associated with large sperm production, being the number of sperm in the competing pool the prime predictor of fertilization success. Despite the strong postcopulatory selection acting directionally on sperm production, its genetic variance is often very high. This can be explained by trade‐offs between sperm production and traits associated with mate acquisition or survival, that may contribute to generate an overall stabilizing selection. To investigate this hypothesis, we first artificially selected male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) for high and low sperm production for three generations, while simultaneously removing sexual selection. Then, we interrupted artificial selection and restored sexual selection. Sperm production responded to divergent selection in one generation, and when we restored sexual selection, both high and low lines converged back to the mean sperm production of the original population within two generations, indicating that sperm number is subject to strong stabilizing total sexual selection (i.e., selection acting simultaneously on all traits associated with reproductive success). We discuss the possible mechanisms responsible for the maintenance of high genetic variability in sperm production despite strong selection acting on it.  相似文献

Sexual adornments often vary markedly across a species' range,which presumably is owing to differences in local environmentalconditions and the associated selection pressures, such as naturalversus sexual selection or the relative signaling value of differentornamental traits. However, there are only a few reported examplesin which the information content of mating signals varies geographically,and even fewer in which a set of secondary sexual traits servesdifferent signaling functions in different populations. Classicstudies of sexual selection in the European barn swallow (Hirundorustica rustica) demonstrate that elongate tail-streamers provideseveral reproductive advantages to males and females and areused as reliable signals of mate quality. Here, we show thattail-streamers do not appear to confer these same benefits ina population of barn swallows from North America (Hirundo rusticaerythrogaster). Instead, ventral plumage coloration, which ismore exaggerated in North American swallows compared with theirEuropean counterparts, predicts patterns of assortative matingand annual reproductive success in H. r. erythrogaster. Theseobservations support the idea that ornamental traits can servedifferent functions among animal populations and suggest thatgeographic variation in different sexual signals may facilitatepopulation divergence, which may ultimately lead to speciation.  相似文献

Gene exchange between locally adapted plant populations can have significant evolutionary consequences, including changes in genetic diversity, introduction of adaptive or maladaptive traits, disruptive of coadaptive gene complexes, and the creation of new ecotypes or even species. The potential for introgression between divergent populations will depend on the strength of selection against nonnative characters. Morphologically variable F2 hybrids of two Gilia capitata subspecies were used to evaluate the strength of phenotypic selection and the response to selection in the home habitats of each subspecies. At both sites, traits diagnostic of the subspecies were subject to significant phenotypic selection, probably mediated by direct selection on unmeasured correlated characters. Phenotypic selection favored native morphologies in all but a single case; leaf shape of one subspecies was favored in both habitats. The strength of selection varied between sites, with one site selecting more strongly against nonnative characters. Offspring of the F2 hybrids showed a significant evolutionary response to selection when grown in a common environment. Evolution was in the direction of similarity with the subspecies native to the site where selection was imposed. This result reveals that native character states are adaptive and suggests that selection will maintain native morphologies even after a substantial influx of genes from an ecologically and morphologically distinct, and locally adapted subspecies.  相似文献

Recent studies have interpreted intraspecific divergence in relative head sizes in snakes as evidence for adaptation of the trophic apparatus in gape-limited predators to local prey size. However, such variation might also arise from non-adaptive processes (such as allometry, correlated response, genetic drift, or non-adaptive phenotypic plasticity). We test predictions from these alternative hypotheses using data on the allometric relationship between head size and body size in two wide-ranging snake species: eight populations of adders ( Vipera berus ) and 30 populations of common gartersnakes ( Thamnophis sirtalis ). Our data enable strong rejection of the alternative (non-adaptive) hypotheses, because the relationship between head and body size differed significantly among populations, the geographic distance separating pairs of populations explained less than 1.5% of their divergence in allometric coefficients, and the within-population allometric coefficients were higher than the among-population coefficients in each species. In addition, the geographical variability of allometric coefficients in females did not parallel that in males, suggesting that allometric coefficients have evolved independently in the two sexes. Phenotypic plasticity also cannot explain the data, because laboratory studies show that the allometric relationship between head size and body size is relatively insensitive to differing growth rates. We conclude that the intraspecific head size divergence in these snakes is better explained by spatially heterogeneous selection to optimize prey handling ability, than by non-adaptive processes.  相似文献
