Collapse of the nasal alae against the septum brings about a serious obstruction to the airway. Collapse may be overlooked on routine examination because the speculum may prevent it.In most cases alar collapse can be corrected by a simple surgical procedure, herein described, which can be readily done at the same time as operation on the caudal portion of the septum.  相似文献

The mechanical interaction of the humerus and ulna during articulation has been examined in skeletal material from African and European populations. It was found that the presence or absence of perforation of the humeral septum and the thickness of the septum when unperforated can be predicted with considerable accuracy when two factors are known: the length of the coronoid and olecranon processes of the ulna relative to the minimum diameter of the trochlea humeri, and the total angle of movement at the elbow from full extension to full flexion. The influences which control either or both of these factors also determine the thickness of the septum of the humerus. These influences are not well known and there is opportunity for both genetic and environmental effects. The coefficients of correlation between septum thickness, flexion angle, humeral robusticity, minimum circumference of the humerus, trochlea diameter and brachial index are given. Septum thickness is correlated more highly with trochlea diameter than with robusticity or minimum circumference of the humerus. The higher frequency of perforation of the septum in the African sample (47%) compared with the European (6%) is associated with a greater range of movement at the elbow in the Africans. Bilateral, sexual and population differences in the frequency of perforation of the humeral septum may be associated with differences in the extent of movement at the elbow joint. Variation in this feature, in turn, may be associated with muscularity and somatotype.  相似文献

Septa can be demonstrated in sections of Escherichia coli strains B and B/r after fixation with acrolein and glutaraldehyde. The septum consists of an ingrowth of the cytoplasmic membrane and the mucopeptide layer; the outer membrane is excluded from the septum until the cells begin to separate. Mesosomes have also been observed. The septum is highly labile and, except in the chain-forming strains, E. coli D22 env A and CRT 97, not easily preserved by standard procedures. The labile nature of the septum may be due to the presence of autolysin(s) located at the presumptive division site. Blocking division by addition of ampicillin (2 to 5 mug/ml) to cells of E. coli B/r produces a bulge at the middle of the cells; bulge formation is stopped by addition of chloramphenicol. Cephalosporins also induce bulge formation but may stop cell elongation as well as division. Bulge formation, due to the presumed action of an autolysin(s), may be an initial step in the septation sequence when the mucopeptide is modified to allow construction of the septum. In a nonseptate filament-forming strain, PAT 84, which ceases to divide at 42 C, bulge formation only occurs in the presence of ampicillin at the time of a shift-down at 30 C or at 42 C in the presence of NaCl (0.25 to 0.34 M). Experiments with chloramphenicol suggest that the filaments are fully compartmentalized but fail to divide owing to the inactivation, rather than loss of synthesis, of an autolysin at 42 C.  相似文献

The two-competing-sites model for peptidoglycan assembly for bacterial cell shape regulation suggests that in rods, bacterial cell shape depends on the balance between two reactions (sites), one responsible for lateral wall elongation and the other responsible for septum formation. The two reactions compete with each other so that no lateral wall can be formed during septum formation and vice versa. When the site for lateral wall elongation overcomes that for septum formation, long rods or filaments are formed and cell division may be blocked. When the reaction leading to septum formation is hyperactive compared with the other, coccobacilli or cocci are formed. Other bacteria carry only one site for peptidoglycan assembly and can grow only as cocci. The two-competing-sites model predicts that two different types of cocci exist (among both morphology mutants and wild-type strains); one carries only the site for septum formation, whereas the other also carries the site for lateral wall elongation, the former site predominating over the latter. As a consequence of the inhibition (by antibiotics or by mutations) of septum formation in wild-type cocci of various species and in coccoid morphology mutants, some cocci are expected to undergo transition to rod shape and others are not. We have evaluated these predictions and show that they are in agreement. In fact, we found that among wild-type cocci belonging to 13 species, those of 6 species formed rods, whereas the remaining organisms maintained their coccal shape when septa were inhibited by antibiotics. Some coccoid morphology mutants of rod-shaped bacteria underwent coccus-to-rod transition after septum inhibition by antibiotics, whereas others maintained their coccal shape. When a mutation that causes septum inhibition was expressed in a morphology mutant of Klebsiella pneumoniae grown as a coccus, transition to rod shape was observed. A total of 914 mutants unable to form colonies at 42 degrees C were isolated from the coccoid species mentioned above. Between 75 and 95% of the mutants isolated from the species that formed rods when septum formation was inhibited by antibiotics but none of those isolated from the others underwent coccus-to-rod transition upon incubation at the nonpermissive temperature.  相似文献

Growth cone responses to guidance cues provide the basis for neuronal pathfinding. Although many cues have been identified, less is known about how signals are translated into the cytoskeletal rearrangements that steer directional changes during pathfinding. Here we show that the response of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons to Semaphorin 3A gradients can be divided into two steps: growth cone collapse and retraction. Collapse is inhibited by overexpression of myosin IIA or growth on high substrate-bound laminin-1. Inhibition of collapse also prevents retractions; however collapse can occur without retraction. Inhibition of myosin II activity with blebbistatin or by using neurons from myosin IIB knockouts inhibits retraction. Collapse is associated with movement of myosin IIA from the growth cone to the neurite. Myosin IIB redistributes from a broad distribution to the rear of the growth cone and neck of the connecting neurite. High substrate-bound laminin-1 prevents or reverses these changes. This suggests a model for the Sema 3A response that involves loss of growth cone myosin IIA to facilitate actin meshwork instability and collapse, followed by myosin IIB concentration at the rear of the cone and neck region where it associates with actin bundles to drive retraction.  相似文献

The arterial and venous systems of the rat's septum pellucidum has been studied by means of the perfusion technique. The arteries may be classified into three groups. The branches of each of the three groups originate from the a. hemispherica and enter the septum from the frontal direction. The veins may be divided into an anterior and a posterior group. The anterior veins flow through the v. subcallosa into the sinus cavernosus, the posterior veins into v. cerebri magna. The arterial and venous blood supply of the individual nuclei of the septum are compar independent.  相似文献

Infection of cells with African swine fever virus (ASFV) can lead to the formation of zipper-like stacks of structural proteins attached to collapsed endoplasmic reticulum (ER) cisternae. We show that the collapse of ER cisternae observed during ASFV infection is dependent on the viral envelope protein, J13Lp. Expression of J13Lp alone in cells is sufficient to induce collapsed ER cisternae. Collapse was dependent on a cysteine residue in the N-terminal domain of J13Lp exposed to the ER lumen. Luminal collapse was also dependent on the expression of J13Lp within stacks of ER where antiparallel interactions between the cytoplasmic domains of J13Lp orientated N-terminal domains across ER cisternae. Cisternal collapse was then driven by disulphide bonds between N-terminal domains arranged in antiparallel arrays across the ER lumen. This provides a novel mechanism for biogenesis of modified stacks of ER present in cells infected with ASFV, and may also be relevant to cellular processes.  相似文献

An anatomic study was performed to reappraise the vasculature of the lateral intermuscular septum of the thigh and muscles associated with it using 12 preserved cadaver legs. Several possible new clinical applications of the lateral intermuscular septum and the short head of the biceps femoris were identified as follows: (1) short head of biceps femoris muscle or musculoseptal flap based on the second and/or third profunda perforating vessels, or based on the superior lateral genicular vessels, with or without the iliotibial tract and the deep fascia, and with or without the motor nerve of the short head; (2) transverse extension of the fascial portion of the tensor fasciae latae muscle or musculocutaneous flap to include the lateral intermuscular septum; (3) combination use of items 1 and 2, above; and (4) free septofascial graft using the lateral intermuscular septum and iliotibial tract.It is anticipated that the distally based short head of the biceps femoris muscle flap will be an additional option for repairing defects around the knee, and that a free short head of the biceps femoris muscle flap based on the profunda femoris perforating vessels will be useful in functional reconstruction such as reanimation of the paralyzed face. The lateral intermuscular septum can be incorporated into the short head of biceps femoris muscle flap or into the tensor fasciae latae flap, and it also can be used as a free fascial graft. Functional deficit resulting from harvesting the short head of the biceps femoris and the lateral intermuscular septum is minimal, and donor wound at the lateral lower thigh seems to be acceptable.  相似文献

Right ventricular (RV) mid-septal pacing should have fewer negative effects on left ventricular function compared to apical pacing. However, targeting the mid-septum may be technically challenging since it is usually done with two-dimensional fluoroscopy. The rotation of the heart and various shapes of the RV make it difficult to assess, whether the lead is really anchored in the septum. Many leads, apparently anchored in the septum, are in fact anchored in the anterior wall or anteroseptal groove, and some can get anchored in close proximity to the left anterior descending artery (LAD). We report three cases from our series of 51 patients, in whom the RV lead thought to be implanted in the mid-septum was in fact anchored in close proximity of LAD when assessed using computed tomography.  相似文献

This is the first study of sporogenesis in Streptomyces carried out on a relatively high number of species (seven) which allows us, using also previously published results, to establish a general picture of this process. In the sporogenesis of Streptomyces two basic stages can be considered: the sporulation septum synthesis and the arthrospore maturation. Our ultrastructural study of the sporulation septum formation suggests the existance within this genus of three basic types. Type I is distinguished because the septum is formed from the beginning by two separate cross walls. Within this type we include Streptomyces erythraeus, Streptomyces albus, and Streptomyces aureofaciens and also include Streptomyces venezuelae, Streptomyces griseus, and Streptomyces osteogriseus. Type II is distinguished because there is a deposit of material previous to the synthesis of the double annulus which completes the septum. This type can be divided into two subtypes. In the first the deposits are wedge-shaped and the double annulus is clearly visible, and to this group belong Streptomyces flaveolus, Streptomyces ambofaciens, and Streptomyces coelicolor. In the second the deposits, which have a different shape and are very well developed, constitute almost entirely the sporulation septum in which the double annulus is barely visible; Streptomyces antibioticus and also Streptomyces viridochromogenes belong to this group. Type III, represented by Streptomyces cinnamonensis, is distinguished because the septum is formed by a single cross wall.  相似文献

In the sporogenesis of Streptomyces, two basic stages can be considered: sporulation septum synthesis and arthrospore maturation. Most of the information about the ultrastructural changes accompanying the sporogenesis refer to the first stage of the process, but nothing has been published about the evolution of the sporulation septum during maturation. In a previous paper, proposed three basic types of sporulation septum formation in Streptomyces. Our ultrastructural study on the evolution of the sporulation septum during the early stages of arthrospore maturation in seven species of Streptomyces indicates correlation between the sporulation septum type and its evolution during the arthrospore maturation. In types I and II the material of the annuli was incorporated into the lateral walls of the arthrospore, whereas in types II and III the deposits were lysed during the maturation. Only in type III was the arthrospore wall synthesized de novo. In type I there was total integration and in type II there was partial integration of the septum into the arthrospore wall.  相似文献

The hippocampal formation (HF) of food-storing birds is larger than non-storing species, and the size of the HF in food-storing Black-Capped Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) varies seasonally. We examined whether the volume of the septum, a medial forebrain structure that shares reciprocal connections with the HF, demonstrates the same species and seasonal variation as has been shown in the HF. We compared septum volume in three parid species; non-storing Blue Tits (Parus caeruleus) and Great Tits (Parus major), and food-storing Black-Capped Chickadees. We found the relative septum volume to be larger in chickadees than in the non-storing species. We also compared septum and nucleus of the diagonal band (NDB) volume of Black-Capped Chickadees at different times of the year. We found that the relative septum volume varies seasonally in food-storing birds. The volume of the NDB does not vary seasonally. Due to the observed species and seasonal variation, the septum, like the hippocampal formation of food-storing birds, may be specialized for some aspects of food-storing and spatial memory.  相似文献

Morphometric analysis of graptolites from the persculptus and acuminatus biozones of central Wales identifies four successive morphospecies of normalograptids. These graptolites can be used for biostratigraphical subdivision of these strata as follows: (i) an early persculptus Biozone interval containing broad forms with geniculate thecae that have the morphology of Persculptograptus persculptus with an early insertion point for the full median septum (theca 11); (ii) a supra‐adjacent level of early persculptus Biozone age, with narrower, parallel‐sided forms, that have been referred to as Normalograptus? aff. parvulus and have a slightly later insertion point for the full median septum (theca 12); (iii) a third interval, encompassing the later part of the persculptus Biozone to the early acuminatus Biozone, with Normalograptus? cf. parvulus, which has the full median septum delayed to the level of theca 3–7; and (iv) a younger interval, in the mid‐acuminatus Biozone with Persculptograptus cf. persculptus specimens that do not display the median septum on its reverse side. These taxa can be used for refined biostratigraphy and correlation in the late Ordovician and early Silurian of central Wales. The progressive delay in the insertion of the median septum in these taxa may have wider application for the correlation of the interval immediately after the Hirnantian glacial maximum.  相似文献

Electron microscope observation revealed the presence of many fine filaments within the cytoplasm surrounding the leading edge of the septum in telophase cells of Spirogyra verruculosa Jao. These filaments, about 7 nm each in diameter, ran parallel to one another along the leading edge of the septum and, sometimes, they appeared to be gathered into at least two bundles. These filament distribution patterns coincided well with those of the fluorescence of rhodamine-labeled phalloidin in the vicinity of the septum in telophase cells. The present results suggest that the fine filaments observed within the cytoplasm surrounding the leading edge of the septum may be actin filaments.  相似文献

The nonlinear, core-conductor model of action potential propagation down axisymmetric nerve fibers is adapted for an implicit, numerical simulation by computer solution of the differential equations. The calculation allows a septum to be inserted in the model fiber; the thin, passive septum is characterized by series resistance Rsz and shunt resistance Rss to the grounded bath. If Rsz is too large or Rss too small, the signal fails to propagate through the septum. Plots of the action potential profiles for various axial positions are obtained and show distortions due to the presence of the septum. A simple linear model, developed from these simulations, relates propagation delay through the septum and the preseptal risetime to Rsz and Rss. This model agrees with the simulations for a wide range of parameters and allows estimation of Rsz and Rss from measured propagation delays at the septum. Plots of the axial current as a function of both time and position demonstrate how the presence of the septum can cause prominent local reversals of the current. This result, not previously described, suggests that extracellular magnetic measurements of cellular action currents could be useful in the biophysical study of septated fibers.  相似文献

Cytoplasmiccontinuity on both sides of the septum is maintained by theplasmalemma which passes through the septal pore around theperiphery of the plug. Membrane-lined vesicles may occur inthe wall, between the wall and the plasmalemma and internalto the plasmalemma. Observations of chitin preparations from hyphae ofCandida albicans suggest that the septum is made of two juxtaposed plates rich in chitin microfibrils. Thus the trilaminate appearance of sections of septa seen in electron micrographs can be interpreted as two plates of densely staining chitin-rich material separated by a lightly staining area. A population of aseptate pycnidiospores of the fungus Botryodiplodia theobromae can be induced to germinate or to form septa delimiting two cells; this developmental process is dependent upon nutritional and environmental factors. Transmission electron microscope investigations indicate that during germination of the aseptate spore, a new inner wall layer is synthesized de novo at the site of germ tube emergence. Formation of the septum also involves the de novo synthesis of an inner wall layer which comprises the majority of the septum and completely surrounds the spore. The wall of the germ tube emerging from the septate spore is a direct extension of this inner layer deposited during the formation of the septum. Although the early stages of spore germination may involve localized enzymatic degradation of the internal layers of the spore wall, transmission and scanning electron micrographs of germinating spores show that the outer wall layers are physically fractured by the emerging germ tube. It is suggested that spore germination and septum formation are initially similar processes regarding cell wall genesis but that some mechanism responsive to environmental and nutritional conditions determines the course of development.  相似文献

Cytokinesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae occurs by the concerted action of the actomyosin system and septum formation. Here we report on the roles of HOF1, BNI1, and BNR1 in cytokinesis, focusing on Hof1p. Deletion of HOF1 causes a temperature-sensitive defect in septum formation. A Hof1p ring forms on the mother side of the bud neck in G2/M, followed by the formation of a daughter-side ring. Around telophase, Hof1p is phosphorylated and the double rings merge into a single ring that contracts slightly and may colocalize with the actomyosin structure. Upon septum formation, Hof1p splits into two rings, disappearing upon cell separation. Hof1p localization is dependent on septins but not Myo1p. Synthetic lethality suggests that Bni1p and Myo1p belong to one functional pathway, whereas Hof1p and Bnr1p belong to another. These results suggest that Hof1p may function as an adapter linking the primary septum synthesis machinery to the actomyosin system. The formation of the actomyosin ring is not affected by bni1Delta, hof1Delta, or bnr1Delta. However, Myo1p contraction is affected by bni1Delta but not by hof1Delta or bnr1Delta. In bni1Delta cells that lack the actomyosin contraction, septum formation is often slow and asymmetric, suggesting that actomyosin contraction may provide directionality for efficient septum formation.  相似文献
