There are few quantitative data on the role of emergence from diapausing eggs in population dynamics of natural populations of zooplankton species; to our knowledge, all these concern copepods and cladocerans. We present here direct estimates of emergence from bottom resting eggs for another important category of freshwater zooplankton, namely rotifers. Three populations of rotifers of the genus Brachionus were studied in a lake. During the study period 10 population increases, each corresponding to an individual sampling interval, were detected. For each interval, emergence from immediately hatching, parthenogenetic eggs calculated on the basis of the Edmondson-Paloheimo model and emergence from diapausing bottom eggs determined in short-term experiments were estimated and compared to each other. We found that three of the population increases observed are entirely explained by parthenogenetic natality. In contrast, emergence from diapausing eggs can, on its own, account for none of population increases. For two population increases, however, it accounts for that part of population growth which remains unexplained by the parthenogenetic natality. For rotifer populations studied, emergence from diapausing eg eggs is generally less important than parthenogenetic births, when both are regarded as an immediate cause of population growth. This is in sharp contrast to the data available for some crustaceans (De Stasio, 1990) where the role of emergence from diapausing eggs in population dynamics has been clearly shown.  相似文献

1. Cyclical parthenogens, organisms switching between sexual and asexual mode of reproduction, are common in aquatic habitats. In permanent waterbodies with year‐round persistence of populations, the relevance of sexually produced resting eggs for population dynamics and structure is still largely unexplored. 2. The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of recruitment from resting eggs to Daphnia spp. in a deep dimictic reservoir with overwintering populations (Saidenbach Reservoir, Germany). We linked field studies on Daphnia population dynamics, hatching rates and diapausing egg abundances in the sediment with allozyme analysis of the genetic variability of both the pelagic population and hatchlings from resting eggs. 3. We found higher hatching rates at intermediate depths (10–18 m), although highest diapausing egg abundances were found in the deeper parts of the reservoir. From the extensive field data, we calculated a population budget for the main basin of the reservoir, which showed that hatched daphnids accounted for <1% of the total abundance and explained only a tiny fraction of population growth. 4. The genetic composition (MultiLocus Genotypes, MLG) of the pelagic population was relatively stable throughout the stratified period with up to five among 39 detected MLGs attaining frequencies >5% per date. From 11 MLGs differentiated among hatched daphnids, three were recovered in the pelagic population in perceptible, albeit low frequencies (1–4%). 5. We conclude that the contribution of hatched animals to the spring population dynamics is negligible in situations with an overwintering population present and will only become relevant if densities are extremely low. In this type of system, the significance of the resting egg bank is presumably mainly related to the maintenance of genetic diversity.  相似文献

New tools for analyzing ecological time series have permitted the construction of rigorous models from relatively short series. We have applied these techniques to abundance data for nine natural rotifer populations to construct realistic models of their dynamics. Species included are Asplanchna girodi, Filinia pejleri, Keratella tropica, Monostyla bulla, Brachionus rotundiformis, and four other Brachionus species. The overall shapes of the time series were similar with an initial peak followed by oscillations of varying amplitude around a mean of lower population density. Auto correlation functions (ACF) for all populations were positive at small time lags and decayed rapidly to zero. This suggest that these are stationary, exponentially damped time series, fluctuating arround a constant mean with constant variance. The rapid decay of the ACFs indicates that the effect of a perturbation on these populations is quickly removed in one or two days. Phase portrait plots of log current population density vs log lagged density indicate that the time series are stable and non-chaotic. One type of model yielded the highest R2 for four of the nine species and was designated the consensus model. The mean R2 of this model for all nine species was 0.53 with a coefficient of variation of 38%. Lyapanov exponents were strongly negative, indicating that these populations rapidly return to equilibrium after an exogenous perturbation. Rotifer populations appear to be tracking very recent perturbations and their dynamics cannot be predicted from perturbations in the more distant past. We investigated the effects of increasing the level of stochasticity in the consensus model on the length of the growing season and resting egg production. Increasing stochastic variance increased the probability of extremely low population densities, shortening the growing season. In shorter growing seasons, fewer resting eggs were produced, other factors being equal. Counteracting this negative effect, was an increased probability of extremely high populations densities which increased mixis and resting egg production. Constructing models accurately depicting the dynamics of natural zooplankton populations should improve aquatic ecosystem models. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In this study, we numerically investigated to what extent introducing resting-egg dynamics would stabilize simple Daphnia–algae consumer–resource models. In the models, the density of viable resting eggs was explicitly expressed, and we assumed that zooplankton produced resting eggs seasonally or in response to food deficiency and that resting eggs hatched seasonally. The models predicted that, although the paradox of enrichment was not completely resolved (i.e., the system was destabilized by eutrophication), we found the following conditions under which the stabilizing effects of resting eggs would be significantly large: (1) resting eggs are produced seasonally (rather than in response to food deficiency), (2) the annual average allocation ratio to resting eggs is large, and (3) the annual average hatching rate of resting eggs is low. The results suggest that resting-egg dynamics can significantly reduce the paradox of enrichment within the biologically meaningful parameter space and contribute to the stability of plankton community dynamics.  相似文献

Resting eggs banks are unique windows that allow us to directly observe shifts in population genetics, and phenotypes over time as natural populations evolve. Though a variety of planktonic organisms also produce resting stages, the keystone freshwater consumer, Daphnia, is a well‐known model for paleogenetics and resurrection ecology. Nevertheless, paleogenomic investigations are limited largely because resting eggs do not contain enough DNA for genomic sequencing. In fact, genomic studies even on extant populations include a laborious preparatory phase of batch culturing dozens of individuals to generate sufficient genomic DNA. Here, we furnish a protocol to generate whole genomes of single ephippial (resting) eggs and single daphniids. Whole genomes of single ephippial eggs and single adults were amplified using Qiagen REPLI‐g Single Cell kit reaction, followed by NEBNext Ultra DNA Library Prep Kit for library construction and Illumina sequencing. We compared the quality of the single‐egg and single‐individual amplified genomes to the standard batch genomic DNA extraction in the absence of genome amplification. At mean 20× depth, coverage was essentially identical for the amplified single individual relative to the unamplified batch extracted genome (>90% of the genome was covered and callable). Finally, while amplification resulted in the slight loss of heterozygosity for the amplified genomes, estimates were largely comparable and illustrate the utility and limitations of this approach in estimating population genetic parameters over long periods of time in natural populations of Daphnia and also other small species known to produce resting stages.  相似文献

1. Winter conditions shape plankton dynamics and community composition in temperate regions, but their effect on dynamics and genetic composition of cyclical parthenogens like Daphnia is largely unclear. 2. For 5 years, we studied the dynamics, hatching from resting eggs and genetic structure of a D. galeata × longispina hybrid complex in a dimictic, temperate reservoir. Our main hypothesis was that higher spring densities and an earlier population peak will be observed after warmer winters, with a lower genetic diversity because of a lower contribution of resting eggs to population growth. 3. The study period could clearly be categorised into cold‐winter years (n = 3) and warm‐winter years (n = 2). Daphnia densities at the end of spring overturn were ~10‐fold lower after cold winters than after warm ones, but no pattern emerged concerning the timing and the height of the population peak in early summer. 4. Hatching intensity from resting eggs was higher and contributed up to 8.5% to Daphnia abundance in a cold‐winter year compared to a negligible contribution in a warm‐winter year. Consistent with this finding, new multilocus genotypes (MLGs) adding to the overwintering stock after the end of spring overturn and presumably originating from resting eggs increased genetic diversity and attained high frequencies within the population only after a cold winter. New MLGs were recorded also after warm winters, but they never gained dominance and no shift in genetic diversity was observed. However, genetic diversity was not generally reduced after warm winters. 5. Our results confirm earlier findings that winter conditions have only a limited effect on the main growth phase and the peak of Daphnia during late spring and early summer. However, winter conditions determine the contribution of resting eggs to the population development, which may profoundly alter the genetic composition of the population compared to the previous season.  相似文献

To gain insight into parasite-mediated natural selection, we studied a natural population of the crustacean Daphnia magna during a severe epidemic of the bacterial parasite Pasteuria ramosa. We also investigated the relationship between susceptibility and the production of resting eggs, which are only produced during the sexual phase of reproduction. Live host samples were taken before and after this epidemic and resistance to P. ramosa was examined in the laboratory. Host clones collected after the epidemic were more resistant to P. ramosa than were those collected pre-epidemic, which is consistent with parasite-mediated selection. In our study population, asexually reproducing females were observed across the entire study period, but females carrying resting eggs were observed only prior to the epidemic. For hosts isolated in this pre-epidemic period, we found evidence that those carrying resting eggs (at the time of collection) were more susceptible than those that were reproducing asexually. This was especially apparent for measures of parasite growth, although not all measures of infection success conclusively supported this pattern. Nevertheless, the data suggest that some genotypes invest heavily in diapause at the expense of immunocompetence. Sex could therefore inhibit the evolution of resistance because each spring new genotypes will hatch from resting eggs that are relatively susceptible as they were not exposed to the previous years bout of parasite-mediated selection.  相似文献

Most species of rotifers have a combination of sexual and asexual reproduction, with sexual reproduction resulting in resting eggs, which can lay dormant for long periods. The occurrence of sexual reproduction affects population dynamics through the temporary presence of male rotifers, and a reduction in the growth of the number of female rotifers. A previously published, individual-based model used dynamic energy budget theory to describe rotifer food intake, growth, egg production, and mortality, but assumed asexual reproduction only. In the current study, we have expanded the model to describe the entire reproductive cycle of the rotifers, making it usable for investigating relationships, such as those between the signal triggering mictic egg production, and the timing and number of resting eggs produced. The model is intended for use in predicting the specific future development of cultures, for instance, as a process model in rotifer or resting egg production for aquaculture. Guest editors: S. S. S. Many representatives of freshwater zooplankton produce at some stage in their life cycle resting stages. A variable portion of the eggs of the previous growing period will hatch at the next occasion while the remaining ones are added to a persistent egg bank, where they can remain viable for decades or longer. The importance of the study of resting eggs and egg banks in general for such different disciplines as taxonomy, ecological biogeography, paleolimnology, nature conservation, evolutionary ecology and community and population ecology is generally appreciated. The major current and expected future developments in this rapidly expanding field of research are presented here. The structure and dynamics of the egg bank are determined by the life history characteristics of the species (or local population), the hatching phenology of their resting stages, and the characteristics of the habitat. The horizontal distribution of dormant stages is generally patchy, with a greater density in the deeper and/or windward parts of a pond or lake. In sediment cores, most viable (responsive) eggs occur in the upper centimeters, although vertical variation related to the history of fish predation or water quality occurs. The accumulation of resting stages of different species, generations and genotypes with variable regeneration niches results in a mixed egg bank with greater potential biodiversity than the active community sampled at any one moment. Through the benthic–pelagic coupling, this dormant reservoir may have considerable impact on the evolutionary potential of the organisms, the ecological dynamics of the community and the distribution of species. Egg banks can be considered the archive of the local habitat, since the pattern of changes in species assemblage and genotypes from the past up to the present reflect changes due to natural or anthropogenic impact that can be used to reconstruct evolutionary processes or even to restore the local habitat. Overlooking the egg bank as an important component of zooplankton communities may lead to erroneous interpretations in the analysis of community and population genetic structure. This review integrates technical and scientific information needed in the study of the structure and function of egg banks in zooplankton with special focus on the fascinating latest developments in the field.  相似文献

During past decades, many lakes underwent drastic human‐caused changes in trophic state with strong implications for population dynamics and food web processes. We investigated the influence of trophic state on nutrient allocation into Daphnia resting eggs. The production of resting eggs is an important survival strategy, allowing Daphnia to cope with unfavorable environmental conditions. Allocation of essential nutrients into resting eggs may crucially influence embryonic development and offspring survival and thus is of great ecological and evolutionary interest. The capacity of Daphnia to adjust the allocation of nutrients into resting eggs may depend on the dietary nutrient supply, which may vary with trophic state‐related changes in the phytoplankton community composition. Resting eggs were isolated from sediment cores taken from Lake Constance, a large prealpine lake with a distinct eutrophication and reoligotrophication history, and analyzed for elemental (carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus) and biochemical (sterols and fatty acids) nutrients. Carbon allocation into Daphnia resting eggs continuously decreased over time, irrespective of changes in trophic state. The allocation of nitrogen into Daphnia resting eggs followed the changes in trophic state, that is, nitrogen concentrations in resting eggs increased with eutrophication and decreased again with reoligotrophication. The allocation of phosphorus, sterols and long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid, into Daphnia resting eggs did not change significantly over time. Changes in trophic state strikingly influenced all trophic levels in Lake Constance. However, nutrient allocation into Daphnia resting eggs was mostly resilient to changes in lake trophic state.  相似文献

The diet choice of omnivores feeding on two adjacent trophic levels (either plants and herbivores or herbivores and predators) has been studied extensively. However, omnivores usually feed on more than two trophic levels, and this diet choice and its consequences for population dynamics have hardly been studied. We report how host-plant quality affects the diet choice of western flower thrips feeding on three trophic levels: plants (cucumber or sweet pepper), eggs of spider mites and eggs of a predatory mite that attacks spider mites. Spider mites feed on the same host plants as thrips and produce a web that hampers predator mobility. To assess the indirect effects of spider mites on predation by thrips, the thrips were offered spider-mite eggs and predatory-mite eggs on cucumber or sweet pepper leaf discs that were either clean, damaged by spider mites but without spider-mite web, or damaged and webbed. We show that, overall, thrips consumed more eggs on sweet pepper, a plant of low quality, than on cucumber, a high quality host plant. On damaged and webbed leaf discs (mimicking the natural situation), thrips killed more predator eggs than spider-mite eggs on sweet pepper, but they killed equal numbers of eggs of each species on cucumber. This is because web hampered predation on spider-mite eggs by thrips on sweet pepper, but not on cucumber, whereas it did not affect predation on predatory-mite eggs. We used the data obtained to parameterize a model of the local dynamics of this system. The model predicts that total predation by the omnivore has little effects on population dynamics, whereas differential attack of predator eggs and spider-mite eggs by the omnivore has large effects on the dynamics of both mite species on the two host plants.

To evaluate the influence of overwintering individuals of zooplankton on spring zooplankton communities, the dynamics of zooplankton communities with or without overwintering individuals were observed in experimental ponds from fall to spring. An insecticide, carbaryl, was used to regulate the overwintering individuals. In ponds which received insecticide applications in November or January, all cladoceran and rotiferan species were eliminated by the treatments and did not reappear until late March or early April, even when the chemical disappeared rapidly. The low water temperature may delayed the establishment of the populations from resting eggs. In these ponds, populations of various cladoceran and rotiferan species, which seemed to be originated from resting eggs, were built up in the spring. In control ponds,Daphnia ambigua orD. longispina overwintered as juveniles and adults and established a large spring population earlier than other cladocerans and rotifers overwintering as resting eggs. The latter zooplankters did not increase in the spring probably because their growth was suppressed by the precedingDaphnia species through competition. In nature, even if the number of overwintering individuals is small, they may have a potential to build up a large population earlier than the individuals hatching from resting eggs. As a result, the species which have overwintered as individuals seem to predominate in the spring and have a large influence on the spring zooplankton community.  相似文献

The production of resting eggs by the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was tested at four salinities (9, 18, 27 and 36\%) and six concentrations of the alga Chlorella stigmatophora (0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 6.0 × 106 cells ml–1). The results indicated that resting eggs were produced only at two salinities (9\% and 18\%) and that their number was affected by the amount of food provided. A model consisting of two generalized linear sub-models was built to evaluate the contribution of each of the tested food concentrations at the two salinities. The sub-models were used to distinguish between two different components of resting egg production: one related to the presence or absence of resting egg production, and the other to the number of resting eggs produced, given that production had occurred. Besides indicating the best combination of salinity and food concentration for obtaining large numbers of resting eggs, they revealed the contribution of internal population factors that were not controlled in the course of the experiment. The model identified the positive contribution of the relative number of females to males, and the negative association between high rotifer densities and the production of resting eggs. The results of the present study help in defining the optimal conditions for mass production of resting eggs, which are of potential importance in aquaculture.Deceased, September 1991.  相似文献

  1. A review of research on life-cycle events in field and laboratory populations of monogonont rotifers shows that there is great variation at multiple levels: (1) degree of sexual dimorphism; (2) occurrence and timing of sex; (3) propensity for sex during sexual periods; (4) factors controlling initiation of sex; and (5) timing and extent of emergence from diapause. There is no regular pattern where: (1) fertilised resting eggs hatch to start the growing season; (2) populations develop via female parthenogenesis during favourable conditions; and then (3) bisexual reproduction with resting-egg production occurs during later, unfavourable conditions.
  2. Sexual reproduction in natural populations can occur throughout much of the growing season, be restricted to some period(s) during the growing season, or be completely absent. During sexual reproduction in both natural and laboratory populations, only some fraction of females produces males or resting eggs. This bet-hedging strategy can prevent a population crash and permits future population growth via female parthenogenesis. Selection against sexual reproduction, and rapid loss of sex, can occur.
  3. Laboratory experiments with pond-dwelling species have identified specific environmental factors that induce sex in different species: (1) increasing population density; (2) dietary tocopherol (vitamin E) and (3) long photoperiods. These factors generally are associated with favourable conditions for population growth and production of energy-rich resting eggs: (1) large population size; (2) high probability of contacts between males and fertilisable females; and (3) nutritious diets. Endogenous factors can inhibit responses to these environmental inducers, and thus favour female parthenogenesis.
  4. The timing of resting-egg hatching depends on: (1) occurrence of specific environmental conditions; (2) the minimum duration of obligate diapause; and (3) the genotype and physiology of females producing resting eggs. Hatching may occur shortly after oviposition, after a long diapause before or at the start of a new growing season, or throughout the growing season. Hatching can be massive and contribute substantially to population growth and genetic diversity.
  5. Areas for future research include: (1) determining the timing and extent of sex and resting-egg hatching in more natural populations, especially those that are marine, benthic, sessile, and interstitial; and (2) identifying environmental and physiological factors controlling these events.

SUMMARY 1. Sexual reproduction in the heterogonic life cycle of many rotifers occurs when amictic females, which produce diploid eggs developing parthenogenetically into females, are environmentally induced to produce mictic females. Mictic females produce haploid eggs which develop parthenogenetically into males or, if fertilised, into resting eggs – encysted embryos which develop into amictic females after an obligatory diapause. 2. A Florida strain of Brachionus calyciflorus was used to test the prediction that amictic females hatching from resting eggs (Generation 1), and those from the next few parthenogenetic generations, have a lower propensity to produce mictic daughters in response to crowding than those from later parthenogenetic generations. In 10 replicate clones, populations initiated by amictic females from generations 1, 5, 8, 12 and 18 were exposed to a standardised crowding stimulus, and the proportion of mictic females in the populations was determined. These proportions varied significantly across generations and clones. They were very low in the early generations and gradually increased to a mean of about 0.5 at Generation 12. 3. The mechanism for the transgenerational plasticity in response to crowding is not known. One possibility is that resting eggs contain an agent from their fertilised mictic mother's yolk gland that prevents development into mictic females and is transmitted in increasingly low concentrations through successive parthenogenetic generations of amictic females. 4. This parental effect may contribute to clonal fitness by ensuring that a clone developing from a resting egg will attain a higher population size through female parthenogenesis before maximising its commitment to sexual reproduction, even in the presence of a crowding stimulus from a high population density of other clones. Therefore, the number of resting eggs to which a clone contributes its genes should be maximised. 5. The clonal variation in propensity to produce mictic females in this strain indicates genetic variation in the trade‐off between maximising population growth via female parthenogenesis and increasing the probability of producing at least some resting eggs before local extinction from the plankton.  相似文献

All species of Daphnia (Cladocera) produce, at some stage in their life cycle, diapausing eggs, which can remain viable for decades or centuries forming a “seed bank” in lake sediments. Because of their often good preservation in lake sediment, they are useful in paleolimnology and microevolutionary studies. The focus of this study was the analysis of cladoceran resting eggs stored in the sediment in order to examine the ephippial eggs bank of Daphnia pulicaria Forbes in six mountain lakes in the High Tatra Mountains, the Western Carpathians (northern Slovakia and southern Poland). Firstly, we analyzed distribution, abundance and physical condition of resting eggs in the sediment for their later used in historical reconstruction of Daphnia populations by genetic methods. To assess changes in the genetic composition of the population through time, we used two microsatellite markers. Although DNA from resting eggs preserved in the High Tatra Mountain lake sediments was extracted by various protocols modified for small amounts of ancient DNA, DNA from eggs was not of sufficient quality for microsatellite analyses. Distribution curves of resting eggs from sediment cores correspond to the environmental changes that have occurred in the High Tatra Mountains area during last two centuries (atmospheric acid deposition, fish introduction) and demonstrate their influence on natural populations. Evaluation of ephippia physical condition (the most common category was empty ephippial covers) suggests that the majority of resting eggs hatched to produce a new generation of Daphnia or may be due to failed deposition of resting eggs by Daphnia to the chitinous case. In conclusion, age, low quantity and poor physical condition of resting eggs from these Tatra lake sediments proved to be unsuitable not just for use in genetic analyses, but also the possibilities of autogenous restoration of Daphnia populations from the resting egg banks in the Tatra sediments are negligible.  相似文献

The enormous success of the genus Daphnia in freshwater ecosystems is at least partially due to their cyclical parthenogenetic life cycle, in which asexual and sexual reproduction alternate periodically. This temporal change between reproductive strategies allows for (1) rapid population growth via subitaneously developing eggs when environmental conditions are appropriate and (2) the maintenance of genetic diversity via sexual reproduction and the production of resting eggs when environmental conditions deteriorate. We show here that dietary amino acids are involved in triggering the switch between reproductive modes in Daphnia pulex. Supplementation experiments demonstrate that specific dietary amino acids, in particular arginine and histidine, avert crowding-induced resting egg production, enhance subitaneous reproduction by increasing algal food quality and, as a combined effect of both processes, increase population growth rates. These findings suggest that the availability of single dietary amino acids potentially affects the seasonal dynamics and long-term persistence of Daphnia populations in the field, which may have consequences for the efficiency of carbon transfer and thus the trophic structure of freshwater food webs.  相似文献
