The hybrid up flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor was evaluated for efficacy in reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of bulk drug pharmaceutical wastewater under different operational conditions. The start-up of the reactor feed came entirely with glucose, applied at an organic loading rate (OLR) 1 kg COD/m3 d. Then the reactor was studied at different OLRs ranging from 2 to 11 kg COD/m3 d with pharmaceutical wastewater. The optimum OLR was found to be 9 kg COD/m3 d, where we found 65–75% COD and 80–94% of BOD reduction with biogas production containing 60–70% of methane and specific methanogenic activity was 320 ml CH4/g-VSS d. By the characterization studies of effluent using GC–MS, the hazardous compounds like phenol, l,2-methoxy phenol, 2,4,6-trichloro phenol, dibutyl phthalate, 1-bromo naphthalene, carbamazepine and antipyrine were present. After the treatment, these compounds degraded almost completely except carbamazepine. Thermophilic methanothrix and methanosaetae like bacteria are present in the granular sludge.  相似文献

Pilot studies were carried out for the treatment of pre-hydrolysate liquor (PHL), a high strength effluent (COD: 70,000-80,000 mg/l) emanating from a rayon grade pulp mill using up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB). Substrate inhibition was avoided with optimum COD feed of around 25,000 mg/l. This was achieved by diluting the PHL with a low strength effluent stream known as alkali back wash (ABW) available in the plant and also by partially recycling the reactor liquid outlet. An optimum organic loading rate (OLR) of 10 could be achieved with a COD reduction of 70-75%, a BOD reduction of 85-90% and a methane yield of 0.31-0.33 m3/kg of COD reduced. The pilot scale studies also revealed that addition of milk of lime (MOL) was essential for neutralization and buffering and DAP and urea to supplement the nutrients in the PHL. Based on the pilot studies, a full-scale high rate biomethanation plant was designed and erected for treating the PHL, which after some modification showed similar performance for COD, BOD reduction and methane yield.  相似文献

In the present study, an attempt has been made to treat dairy wastewater entirely via anaerobic treatment over a period of 215 days, using two-stage Hybrid Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (HUASB) reactors, which offer the advantages associated both with fixed film and upflow sludge blanket treatments. A HUASB with polyurethane foam cubes was used for stage I, and a HUASB utilizing PVC-cut rings was used for stage II. The output from stage I was used as the input for stage II. The two-stage reactor was operated at an organic loading rate that varied from 10.7 to 21.4 kg COD m3/d for a period of 215 days, including the start-up period. The ideal organic loading rate for the two-stage reactor was 19.2 kg COD/m3/d. A further 21.4 kg COD m3/d increase in the organic loading rate resulted in the souring of the reactor function in stage I, which consequently reduced the overall reactor performance. Combined COD removal during the stable operation period (10.7 to 19.2 kg COD m3/d) occurred in a range between 97 and 99%. The methane content in the biogas varied from 65 to 70% in stage I, and from 63 to 66% in stage II. The two-stage anaerobic treatment using HUASB with PUF and PVC described in this work is expected to constitute a better alternative for the complete treatment of dairy wastewater than high-rate anaerobic, anaerobic/aerobic, and two-phase anaerobic treatment methods.  相似文献

The application of the expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor for the anaerobic treatment of low-strength soluble wastewaters using ethanol as a model substrate was investigated in laboratory-scale reactors at 30oC. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was above 80% at organic loading rates up to12 g COD/L . d with influent concentrations as low as 100 to 200 mg COD/L. These results demonstrate the suitability of the EGBS reactor for the anaerobic treatment of low-strength wastewaters. The high treatment performance can be attributed to the intense mixing regime obtained by high hydraulic and organic loads. Good mixing of the bulk liquid phase for the substrate-biomass contact and adequate expansion of the substrate-biomass contact and adequate expansion of the sludge bed for the degassing were obtained when the liquid upflow velocity (V(up)) was greater than 2.5 m/h. Under such conditions, an extremely low apparent K(s) value for acetoclastic methanogenesis of 9.8 mg COD/L was observed. The presence of dissolved oxygen in the wastewater had no detrimental effect on the treatment performance. Sludge piston flotation from pockets of biogas accumulating under the sludge bed occurred at V(up) lower than 2.5 m/h due to poor bed expansion. This problem is expected only in small diameter laboratory-scale reactors. A. more important restriction of the EGSB reactor was the sludge washout occurring at V(up) higher than 5.5 m/h and which was intensified at organic loads higher than 7 g COD/L. d due to buoyancy forces from the gas production. To achieve an equilibrium between the mixing intensity and the sludge hold-up, the operation should be limited to an organic loading rate of 7 g COD/L d. and to a liquid up-flow velocity between 2.5 and 5.5 m/h (c) 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of wastewater from a distillery industry having very high COD (1,10,000-1,90,000 mg/L) and BOD (50,000-60,000 mg/L) was studied in a continuously fed, up flow fixed film column reactor using different support materials such as charcoal, coconut coir and nylon fibers under varying hydraulic retention time and organic loading rates. The seed consortium was prepared by enrichment with distillery spent wash in a conventional type reactor having working capacity of 3 L and was used for charging the anaerobic column reactor. Amongst the various support materials studied the reactor having coconut coir could treat distillery spent wash at 8d hydraulic retention time with organic loading rate of 23.25 kg COD m(-3)d(-1) leading to 64% COD reduction with biogas production of 7.2 m3 m(-3)d(-1) having high methane yield without any pretreatment or neutralization of the distillery spent wash. This study indicates fixed film biomethanation of distillery spent wash using coconut coir as the support material appears to be a cost effective and promising technology for mitigating the problems caused by distillery effluent.  相似文献

This study was focused on several physico-chemical and biological treatment methods that may affect the reduction of the organic load in olive mill wastewater (OMW). In this study, removal of 95% of the phenolic compounds present in OMW was achieved using sand filtration and subsequent treatment with powdered activated carbon in a batch system. This pretreatment for OMW was found to enhance the anaerobic activity of the sludge in the batch system significantly. The efficiency of organic load removal achieved by the anaerobic treatment of untreated OMW in batch reactors with tap water dilution factors below 1:10, reached approximately 65% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. However, in the up-flow sludge anaerobic blanket (UASB) reactor, COD removal efficiency of 80–85% was reached at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5 days with an influent COD concentration of 40 g l−1 and organic loading rate (OLR)=8 g−1 COD l−1 per day.  相似文献

Anaerobic co-digestion is a well established process for treating many types of organic wastes, both solid and liquid. In this study we have investigated, on a laboratory scale, the anaerobic co-digestion of olive mill wastewater (OMW) with olive mill solid waste (OMSW) using semi-continuous, feeding, tubular digesters operated at mesophilic temperatures. Each digester was fed with an influent, composed of OMW and OMSW, at an organic loading rate (OLR) varying between 0.67 and 6.67 g COD/l/d. The hydraulic retention times (HRT) were 12, 24 and 36 days. The TCOD concentrations of OMW used as the main substrate were 24, 56 and 80 g COD/l; the amount of the dry OMSW used as a co-substrate was fixed to approximately 56 g/l of OMW. The results indicated that the best methane production was about 0.95 l/l/day obtained at an OLR = 4.67 g COD/l/d, corresponding to influent TCOD = 56 g COD/l at an HRT = 12d. In contrast, the maximum TCOD removal efficiency (89%) was achieved at an OLR = 0.67 g COD/l/d, corresponding to influent TCOD = 24 g COD/l at an HRT = 36 d. Moreover, the inhibition of biogas production was observed at the highest OLR studied.  相似文献

Pre-treatments are screening, catch basins, flotation, equalization, and settlers for recovering proteins and fats from abattoir wastewater. With chemical addition, dissolved air flotation (DAF) units can achieve chemical oxygen demand (COD) reductions ranging from 32% to 90% and are capable of removing large amounts of nutrients. Aerobic trickling towers reduced soluble COD by additional 27% but did not reduced total COD. Chemical-DAF reduced 67% of total COD and soluble COD. About 40-60% of the solids or approximately 25-35% of the biological oxygen demand (BOD) load can be separated by pre-treatment screening and sedimentation. Anaerobic systems are lagoon, anaerobic contact (AC), up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB), anaerobic sequence batch reactor (ASBR), and anaerobic filter (AF) processes. Abattoir wastewater is well suited to anaerobic treatment because it is high in organic compounds. Typical reductions of up to 97% BOD, 95% SS and 96% COD are reported. UASB's average COD removal efficiencies are of 80-85%. UASB seems to be a suitable process for the treatment of abattoir wastewater, due to its ability to maintain a sufficient amount of viable sludge. Wastewater in abattoirs can be reduced by treatment of immersion chiller effluent by membrane filtration which can produce recyclable water. Total organic C can be reduced below 100mg/L, and bacteria can not pass through the membrane pores. The abattoir waste minimization options are also discussed.  相似文献

A lab-scale investigation was conducted to examine the effectiveness of a multi-fed upflow anaerobic filter process for the methane production from a rice winery effluent at ambient temperatures. The experiment was carried in two identical 3.0-l upflow filters, a single-fed reactor and a multi-fed reactor. The results showed that the multi-fed reactor, operated at the ambient temperatures of 19–27 °C and influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 8.34–25.76 g/l, could remove over 82% of COD even at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 37.68 g-COD/l d and a short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 h. This reactor produced biogas with a methane yield of 0.30–0.35 l-CH4/g-CODremoved. The multi-fed upflow anaerobic filter was proved to be more efficient than the single-fed reactor in terms of COD removal efficiency and stability against hydraulic loading shocks. A linear-regression model with influent COD concentration and HRT terms adequately described the multi-fed upflow anaerobic filter system for the treatment of rice winery wastewater at ambient temperatures.  相似文献

The high organic content of Olive Mill Wastewaters (OMW) causes some difficulties in maintaining the anaerobic process efficiency at high level. The two phase anaerobic system was used to treat olive mill wastewaters, diluted with tap water. Phase separation was accomplished through control of the hydraulic retention time and initial COD removal in two reactors operated in series. The effect of substrate concentration and phase separation on removal efficiency has been investigated. Experimental results indicated that yield of 0.322 to 0.335 litre biogas/g COD removal were obtained with two phase anaerobic treatment and space loading rate of 2.3 and 2.4 gCOD/l.day. The maximum methane production rate near to the theoretical value and corresponded to 360 ml of CH4 for 1g COD removal.Abbreviations OMW Olive Mill Wastewaters - VFA Volatile Fatty Acid - COD Chemical Oxygen Demand - HRT High Retention Time - TKN Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen  相似文献

The potential of wheat straw hydrolysate for biogas production was investigated in continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and up-flow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactors. The hydrolysate originated as a side stream from a pilot plant pretreating wheat straw hydrothermally (195 °C for 10–12 min) for producing 2nd generation bioethanol [Kaparaju, P., Serrano, M., Thomsen, A.B., Kongjan, P., Angelidaki, I., 2009. Bioethanol, biohydrogen and biogas production from wheat straw in a biorefinery concept. Bioresource Technology 100 (9), 2562–2568]. Results from batch assays showed that hydrolysate had a methane potential of 384 ml/g-volatile solids (VS)added. Process performance in CTSR and UASB reactors was investigated by varying hydrolysate concentration and/or organic loading rate (OLR). In CSTR, methane yields increased with increase in hydrolysate concentration and maximum yield of 297 ml/g-COD was obtained at an OLR of 1.9 g-COD/l d and 100% (v/v) hydrolysate. On the other hand, process performance and methane yields in UASB were affected by OLR and/or substrate concentration. Maximum methane yields of 267 ml/g-COD (COD removal of 72%) was obtained in UASB reactor when operated at an OLR of 2.8 g-COD/l d but with only 10% (v/v) hydrolysate. However, co-digestion of hydrolysate with pig manure (1:3 v/v ratio) improved the process performance and resulted in methane yield of 219 ml/g-COD (COD removal of 72%). Thus, anaerobic digestion of hydrolysate for biogas production was feasible in both CSTR and UASB reactor types. However, biogas process was affected by the reactor type and operating conditions.  相似文献

In this study, performance of a lab-scale hybrid up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, treating a chemical synthesis-based pharmaceutical wastewater, was evaluated under different operating conditions. This study consisted of two experimental stages: first, acclimation to the pharmaceutical wastewater and second, determination of maximum loading capacity of the hybrid UASB reactor. Initially, the carbon source in the reactor feed came entirely from glucose, applied at an organic loading rate (OLR) 1 kg COD/m(3) d. The OLR was gradually step increased to 3 kg COD/m(3) d at which point the feed to the hybrid UASB reactor was progressively modified by introducing the pharmaceutical wastewater in blends with glucose, so that the wastewater contributed approximately 10%, 30%, 70%, and ultimately, 100% of the carbon (COD) to be treated. At the acclimation OLR of 3 kg COD/m(3) d the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 2 days. During this period of feed modification, the COD removal efficiencies of the anaerobic reactor were 99%, 96%, 91% and 85%, and specific methanogenic activities (SMA) were measured as 240, 230, 205 and 231 ml CH(4)/g TVS d, respectively. Following the acclimation period, the hybrid UASB reactor was fed with 100% (w/v) pharmaceutical wastewater up to an OLR of 9 kg COD/m(3) d in order to determine the maximum loading capacity achievable before reactor failure. At this OLR, the COD removal efficiency was 28%, and the SMA was measured as 170 ml CH(4)/g TVS d. The hybrid UASB reactor was found to be far more effective at an OLR of 8 kg COD/m(3) d with a COD removal efficiency of 72%. At this point, SMA value was 200 ml CH(4)/g TVS d. It was concluded that the hybrid UASB reactor could be a suitable alternative for the treatment of chemical synthesis-based pharmaceutical wastewater.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to report on the physical characteristics of carrier material (perlite), biomass growth on the carrier material and the biogas production during an apparent steady state period in an inverse anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (IAFBR) for treating high strength organic wastewater. Before starting up the reactor, physical properties of the carrier material were determined. One millimeter diameter perlite particle is found to have a wet specific density of 295 kg/m(3) with specific surface area of 7.010 m(2)/g. This material has provided a good surface for biomass attachment and development. The biofilm concentration (in terms of attached volatile solids (AVS)) attached to carrier material was found to be 0.66 g(AVS)/g(solid). Most particles have been covered with a thin biofilm of uniform thickness. Once the inverse anaerobic fluidized bed system reached the steady state, the organic load was increased step wise by reducing hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 2 days to 0.16 day, while maintaining the constant feed of chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration. This system has achieved 84% COD removal and reached the biogas production of 13.22 l/l/d at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 35 kgCOD/m(3)/d.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of wastewater from a dimethyl terephthalate plant was studied in continuously stirred tank reactors with plastic net biomass support particles (BSP) at a level of 20% (v/v). The experimental results showed that the BSP system could treat the wastewater at a hydraulic retention time as low as 1.5 d, organic loading as high as 20 kg COD/m3/d and at acidic feed pH as low as 4.5 with 95% COD reduction and biogas production of about 8l/l/d, while the control system without support particles could not treat the wastewater above a 5-d hydraulic retention time, 5 kg COD/m3/d organic loading and a feed pH of 6.0. Thus, augmentation of BSP upgraded the performance of the conventional suspended growth system to an equivalent level to advanced reactors.  相似文献

Experimental studies were done in a laboratory scale Anaerobic Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC), for treatment of Synthetic sago wastewater. This paper describes the development and laboratory testing of an Anaerobic RBC process that couples the advantages of the fixed film horizontal flow RBC process with the high strength, starch degradation capabilities of anaerobic systems. The reactor was operated at ambient temperature and was subjected to organic and hydraulic loading rates. The reactor performance with respect to Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal, alkalinity, volatile acids at each stage and biogas production were evaluated. The Anaerobic RBC reactor liquid volume is 70 litres and total disc surface area is 4.45 m2. The reactor was operated with about 100% of the disc area submerged and with a rotational speed held constant at 9?rev/min. The synthetic sago wastewater was started with a COD value of 1087?mg/l at a hydraulic retention time(HRT) of 42?h and it was varied till maximum COD of 9522?mg/l. From the present study, the optimum COD load was found to be 6860?mg/l with a COD removal efficiency of 97.2%.With this optimum COD load, hydraulic loading rate(HLR) study was done at 24?h to 48?h HRT. COD removal efficiencies at hydraulic loading rates were compared with the work of Subrahmanyam &; Sastry (1988). From the present study, the proportionality coefficient was found to be 1.18 with process efficiencies at different hydraulic loading rates.  相似文献

Two-phase anaerobic digestion of cheese whey was investigated in a system consisting of a stirred acidogenic reactor followed by a stirred methanogenic reactor, the latter being coupled to a membrane filtration system to enable removal of soluble effluent whilst retaining solids. The acidogenic reactor was operated at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of one day, giving maximum acidification of 52.25% with up to 5 g/l volatile fatty acids, of which 63.7% was acetic acid and 24.7% was propionic acid. The methanogenic reactor received an organic load up to 19.78 g COD/ld, corresponding to a HRT of 4 days, at which 79% CODs and 83% BOD(5) removal efficiencies were obtained. Average removals of COD, BOD(5) and TSS in the two-phase anaerobic digestion process were 98.5%, 99% and 100%, respectively. The daily biogas production exceeded 10 times reactor volume and biogas methane content was greater than 70%.  相似文献

Summary An UASB reactor was used for the anaerobic conversion of an acidic petrochemical effluent into a methane-rich biogas. Reactor efficiency was optimal at an HRT of 1.78 days and loading rate of 7.255 kg COD/m3.d, A COD reduction of 83% was obtained. The gas production was 2.64 m/m .d (STP) and contained more than 90% CH4. A further increase in the loading rate resulted in a drastic decrease in the reactor effectivity.  相似文献

AIMS: To test the potential use of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and other white-rot fungi to detoxify olive mill wastewaters (OMW) in the presence of a complex activated sludge. To combine the aerobic with anaerobic treatment to optimize the conversion of OMW in biogas. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 25-l air lift reactor was used to pretreat OMW by white-rot fungi. Detoxification of the OMW was monitored by size exclusion HPLC analysis, chemical oxygen demand (COD)/biological oxygen demand (BOD(5)) ratio evolution, and bioluminescence toxicity test. Anaerobic treatment of OMW was performed in a 12-l anaerobic filter reactor. Efficiency of the treatment was evaluated by organic matter removal, and biogas production. By comparison with the pretreatment by activated sludge only, the bioaugmentation with Phanerochaete chrysosporium or Trametes versicolor led to high removal of organic matter, decreased the COD/BOD(5) ratio and the toxicity. The subsequent anaerobic digestion of the OMW pretreated with activated sludge-white-rot fungi showed higher biomethanization yields than that pretreated with activated sludge only. Higher loading rates (7 g COD l(-1) day(-1)) were reached without any acidification or inhibition of biomethanization. CONCLUSIONS: The use of white-rot fungi, even in the presence of complex biological consortia to detoxify OMW, proved to be possible and made the anaerobic digestion of OMW for methane production feasible. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The use of fungi for OMW reuse and energy production could be adapted to industrial applications.  相似文献

Small-scale sour starch agroindustry in Colombia suffer from absence of water treatment. Although starch processing plants produce diluted wastewater, it is a source of pollution and cause environmental problems to the nearby rural population. A laboratory scale anaerobic horizontal flow filter packed with bamboo pieces was evaluated for the treatment of cassava starch extraction wastewater. The wastewater used in the experimentation was the draining water of the starch sedimentation basin. The reactor was operated for 6 months. It was inoculated with a semi-granular sludge from an anaerobic UASB reactor of a slaughterhouse. Maximum organic loading rate (OLR) applied was 11.8g COD/L d without dilution of the wastewater. At steady state and maximum OLR applied, 87% of the COD was removed and a gas productivity of 3.7L/L d was achieved. The average biogas yield was 0.36L/g COD removed. Methane content in the biogas was in the range of 69-81%. The total suspended solids (TSS) removed were 67%. The relative high lactic acid content did not negatively influence the performance of the reactor. No perturbation due to cyanide (3-5mg/L) was observed during the reactor operation. The results obtained indicated that the anaerobic horizontal flow filter could be used efficiently for the treatment of wastewater from Colombian starch processing small-scale agroindustry.  相似文献

Wastewater from the pre-treatment of coffee pulp for mushroom cultivation was treated in an anaerobic filter reactor at laboratory scale. The digester was fed semicontinuously with 300 to 500 ml of fresh medium per day. Organic loading rates (OLR) applied ranged widely during the study, from 0.48 to 62.93 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/1 d. Treating wastewater from the pasteurization of pulp, the highest strength studied, a COD removal efficiency of up to 87% was attained at a high OLR of 42.868 g COD/I d; while a high biogas production rate (BPR) of 2.89 I/I d was also achieved. However, the average organic matter removal efficiency was 53% at an OLR of 23.921 g COD/1 d, which indicates that process efficiency should be improved to achieve a good quality effluent. BPR averaged 1.72 1/1 d, which shows that with technical-scale reactors, high biogas production could be obtained for further use in the pasteurizing process itself (energy recycling).  相似文献
