Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(7): 658–661. Illus. 1963.—Two natural pentaploid (35 chromosome) hybrids of Fragaria chiloensis (2n = 56)–F. vesca (2n = 14) were found in coastal California, an extensive colony of a sterile female clone ascertained to be over 40 years old at Point Sur, and a younger male clonal colony near Montara. The putative parents were present at each site. Apparently the hybrids successfully compete with F. chiloensis because of superior stolon productivity. Hybrids of this type are probably fairly common and may have already led to the development of fertile decaploid colonies through somatic doubling or the functioning of unreduced gametes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) increasingly has been used to analyse “receptor” function, either by using purified proteins (“molecular recognition microscopy”) or, more recently, in situ in living cells. The latter approach has been enabled by the use of a modified commercial AFM, linked to a confocal microscope, which has allowed adhesion forces between ligands and receptors in cells to be measured and mapped, and downstream cellular responses analysed. We review the application of AFM to cell biology and, in particular, to the study of ligand–receptor interactions and draw examples from our own work and that of others to show the utility of AFM, including for the exploration of cell surface functionalities. We also identify shortcomings of AFM in comparison to “standard” methods, such as receptor auto-radiography or immuno-detection, that are widely applied in cell biology and pharmacological analysis.  相似文献

Bronchial asthma in children may be difficult to diagnose. Education of the parents regarding allergic conditions, specifically bronchial asthma, is exceedingly important in order to assure satisfactory treatment and clinical results.Chest symptoms of unexplained origin in early life should immediately arouse suspicion of allergic disease. Other causes of asthmatic symptoms must be borne in mind and excluded before a positive diagnosis of bronchial asthma is established.Of the many factors to be considered in investigating a child with asthma, a comprehensive history is most essential. The climate to which the patient is exposed and the psychic influences must be taken into account. Physical examination, x-ray films and laboratory procedures should be carefully executed. Skin testing, especially with food allergens, should not be relied upon to give all the information in allergic disease. Some form of diet trial, such as elimination diets, should be used if sensitivity to food is suspected.  相似文献

Seasonal aggregation and the monthly rate of neonatal transient hyperthyrotropinemia (THT) were assessed. From November 1998 to April 2005, neonates of gestational age ≥37 wks, birth weight 2500–4000?g, birth length 45–55?cm, and 1st min Apgar score >3, who had thyrotropin (TSH) ≥20 mU/L in their cord dried-blood specimen, but without congenital hypothyroidism, were enrolled in the study. The recall rate equals the rate of THT occurrence in this study. Of 47,945 neonates, 555 had THT (recall rate: 1.2%). The aggregated seasonal recall rate (recall for further assessment to rule out congenital hypothyroidism) was significantly higher in winter (January, February, and March) than the other seasons (p < .0001). Winter had higher recall rate in each year as compared to other seasons, but the overall rate of recalls decreased in 2001 and 2002. Excluding the first 6 months (due to erratic variations), the remaining 72 months revealed a relatively sinusoidal pattern in monthly recall rates; indeed, there was an initial 11-month high recall rates (1.7%), followed by a 33-month decrease (0.7%), a 19-month increase (1.9%), and a final 9-month decrease (0.8%). The recall rate of each of these time intervals was significantly different from that of the next time interval (p < .0001). The monthly recall rates were best fitted to cubic curve estimation and then autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) (0, 1, 1) models. THT occurs significantly more in winter than in other seasons, and this suggests a possible role for time-varying factor(s) contributing to its seasonal preponderance. Illus. 1962.—Although pollen mother cells of nontrue-breeding mutant plants obtained after colchicine treatment of sorghum seedlings, line ‘Experimental 3,’ showed normal chromosome behavior (10 bivalents) at phases of meiosis I, some abnormalities were found at corresponding stages in first- and second-generation self-progeny plants of some of them. The most frequent chromosome irregularities were an increase over ‘Experimental 3’ in number of cells containing univalents, and mixoploid tissues with tetraploid and diploid cells. The higher polyploid groups (6n, 8n, 10n) also present in 2 plants might be related to their male-sterile condition rather than being an indication of the chromosome complement. Abnormalities in progenies suggest that some of the mutants might have been chimeras in which abnormalities were missed and raise the question whether chromosome changes are involved in the formation of the mutants in spite of the preponderance of normal diploid cells with 10 bivalents during prophase and metaphase of meiosis I. This could occur if sorghum contains a genetic mechanism which promotes bivalent rather than multivalent pairing. That such might be a possibility is indicated by the large numbers of bivalents and small numbers of multivalents found in polyploid cells or groups.  相似文献

The nonanthocyanin flavonoids of the diploids Phlox pilosa ssp. pilosa and P. drummondii ssp. mcallisteri and their putative allotetraploid derivatives P. aspera and P. villosissima were characterized by chromatographic and spectrophotometric analyses. Synthetic F1 diploid hybrids were also examined. All but one of the compounds encountered were glycoflavone (C-glycosyl) derivatives of either apigenin or luteolin. Although some compounds were present in all four taxa, most were species-specific. Together, the diploids exhibited 15 different flavonoids. Half of each tetraploid ensemble was composed of novel flavonoids, compounds not manifest in either diploid ancestor. In total, the tetraploids produced seven different novel flavonoids. Five novel compounds differed from particular diploid compounds only in number or kind of oxygen-linked sugar substituents. Ostensibly, these five are either identical to diploid biosynthetic intermediates or share common precursors with related diploid end products. The mode of origin of all novel compounds is discussed.  相似文献
