Hydrothermal vents in the Southern Ocean are the physiologically most isolated chemosynthetic environments known. Here, we describe Kiwa tyleri sp. nov., the first species of yeti crab known from the Southern Ocean. Kiwa tyleri belongs to the family Kiwaidae and is the visually dominant macrofauna of two known vent sites situated on the northern and southern segments of the East Scotia Ridge (ESR). The species is known to depend on primary productivity by chemosynthetic bacteria and resides at the warm-eurythermal vent environment for most of its life; its short-range distribution away from vents (few metres) is physiologically constrained by the stable, cold waters of the surrounding Southern Ocean. Kiwa tylerihas been shown to present differential life history adaptations in response to this contrasting thermal environment. Morphological adaptations specific to life in warm-eurythermal waters, as found on – or in close proximity of – vent chimneys, are discussed in comparison with adaptations seen in the other two known members of the family (K. hirsuta, K. puravida), which show a preference for low temperature chemosynthetic environments.  相似文献

The abundance and diversity of archaeal ammonia monooxygenase subunit A (amoA) genes from hydrothermal vent chimneys at the Juan de Fuca Ridge were investigated. The majority of the retrieved archaeal amoA sequences exhibited identities of less than 95% to those in the GenBank database. Novel ammonia-oxidizing archaea may exist in the hydrothermal vent environments.Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) may play important roles in carbon and nitrogen cycles in various temperate environments (5, 7, 10, 12, 16). The frequent detection (23, 24) and successful enrichment (2, 6) of thermophilic AOA from terrestrial hot springs suggested a wide distribution of thermophilic AOA in geothermal environments. High concentrations of NH4+ (1, 9, 11) and high rates of ammonia oxidation (9, 22) have been observed at the Juan de Fuca Ridge. However, the presence of AOA in this deep-sea hydrothermal system has not been reported. Here, the abundance and diversity of AOA in three hydrothermal vent chimneys in the Endeavor segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge were investigated by targeting the conserved amoA genes. This is also the first report on AOA from deep-sea hydrothermal vent chimneys. These vent chimneys were sulfide structures obtained in the fall of 2005 using the submersible Alvin on board the research vessel Atlantis (dive numbers 4143, 4136, and 4148). Chimney 4148 was an active black smoker venting at around 310°C in the Main Endeavor field (47°56.876′N, 129°5.915′W; depth, 2,192 m). Chimney 4143-1 was an active black smoker venting at 316°C in the Mothra field (47°55.424′N, 129°6.533′W; depth, 2,267 m). The outer layers (samples 4148-1A and 4143-1A) of these chimneys were used in this study. The sample from chimney 4136-1 was from a diffusive field (Clambed field) (47°57.909′N, 129°5.443′W; depth, 2,200 m), where the in situ temperature was measured as 29.2°C. The chimney samples were stored at −20°C on board, transported to the home laboratory on dry ice, and stored at −80°C until analyses were performed.Chimney samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen and milled upon thawing. This procedure was repeated three times to break down the solid sample into small particles, which were then mixed with DNA extraction buffer for DNA isolation as described before (25). The obtained crude DNA was purified by an E-Z N.A. Cycle-Pure kit (Omega Bio-Tek Inc., Norcross, GA). PCR amplifications for the archaeal 16S rRNA gene, the crenarchaeal marine group I (MGI) 16S rRNA gene, the archaeal amoA gene, and the bacterial amoA gene followed procedures previously described (Table (Table1)1) (3, 5, 10, 14). Quantitative PCR (Q-PCR) was performed using a model 7500 real-time system (Applied Biosystems, United Kingdom) and a 20-μl reaction mixture that consisted of 1 μl (1 to 10 ng) of DNA as the template, a 0.15 μM concentration of each primer, and 10 μl of Power SYBR green PCR master mix (Applied Biosystems, United Kingdom) with ROX and SYBR green I. The inserted PCR fragments of clones 4143-1A-71 (from the amoA gene library) and 4136-1-4 (from the archaeal 16S rRNA gene library) were amplified and purified to generate standard DNAs for amoA or archaeal 16S rRNA gene quantification. A serial dilution of standard DNAs was performed to generate calibration curves for sample quantification. A melting curve analysis was performed after amplification, and the cycle threshold was set automatically using system 7500 software, version 1.3.

Open in a separate windowTriplicate PCR products were pooled and clone libraries constructed following the manufacturer''s instructions (Takara Inc., Dalian, China). PCR clones from the libraries were randomly selected for sequencing (Sangon Inc., China). Phylogenetic trees were generated using the PHYLIP package (4) and the maximum-likelihood, neighbor-joining, and maximum-parsimony methods. Bootstrap analysis was used to estimate the reliability of phylogenetic tree constructions (200 replicates). Trees were created using the program Treeview (version 1.6.6).Positive and specific PCR bands were obtained for the archaeal amoA genes from all the three samples, while no PCR band was obtained for the bacterial amoA gene (for the primers and procedures used, see Table Table1).1). In addition, sample 4136-1 was found by Q-PCR analysis to contain the highest number of archaeal amoA genes (with 7.36 ± 0.37 × 104 copies per g of chimney), followed by samples 4143-1A (with 1.88 ± 0.08 × 104 copies per g of chimney) and 4148-1A (with 1.37 ± 0.07 × 102 copies per g of chimney).Clone libraries of archaeal amoA from the three samples were constructed. A total of 93 clones (33 from sample 4136-1, 30 from sample 4143-1A, and 30 from sample 4148-1A) were sequenced and divided into 33 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) based on 99% nucleotide identity. The majority (81.7%) of the retrieved archaeal amoA OTU sequences exhibited relatively low identity (≤94.56%) to other archaeal amoA sequences deposited in GenBank. The phylogenetic relationships among the retrieved amoA and some published amoA sequences are shown in Fig. Fig.1.1. The chimney archaeal amoA sequences fell into five clusters (chimney group I, chimney group II, sediment A-1, and water column A and B clusters), except the sequence of clone 4143-1A-10, which did not fall into any cluster and exhibited the highest identity (90%) to the sequence of clone HB_B_0805A06, which was derived from coastal sediment (18). Chimney group I contained 52 sequences (30 from sample 4148-1A, 11 from sample 4143-1A, and 11 from sample 4136-1); chimney group II contained 23 sequences (20 from sample 4136-1 and 3 from sample 4143-1A). Fourteen sequences from sample 4143-1A grouped into water column A and B clusters (5); and one sequence from sample 4143-1A grouped into the sediment A-1 cluster (13). The sequences from chimney group I exhibited the highest identity (94%) to clone CR-G3N006, derived from a cold seep of the Japan Sea (13). Sequences in chimney group II exhibited the highest identity to clone OA-MA-122 from a water column of a coastal aquarium biofilter, with 84% nucleotide identity (21). The sequences of chimney group II did not cluster with any other sequences. Although showing low bootstrap values (<50%), the chimney group II sequences always clustered into a separate group (Fig. (Fig.1)1) according to different calculation methods, including the maximum-likelihood, neighbor-joining, and maximum-parsimony methods.Open in a separate windowFIG. 1.Phylogenetic tree showing the affiliations of archaeal amoA gene sequences from chimneys (in bold), sediments, soil, water, and the isolated AOA. Bootstrap values were calculated from 200 replications with 585 characters. Maximum-likelihood (left), distance (middle), and parsimony (right) bootstrap values providing ≥50% support are indicated. The bar represents 100 expected substitutions for the archaeal amoA region analyzed. Bacterial amoA sequences were set as the outgroup.Sample 4136-1 contained the highest number of archaeal amoA gene copies. Q-PCR using primers 344F and 518R (15) showed that sample 4136-1 contained 1.10 ± 0.05 × 106 copies of archaeal 16S rRNA genes per g of chimney. Assuming that each crenarchaeal cell possessed only one copy of the amoA gene (8), the AOA constituted at least 6.1% of the archaeal community in sample 4136-1. To explore the potential sources of these amoA sequences in sample 4136-1, an archaeal 16S rRNA clone library was constructed and a total of 82 clones were sequenced. These sequences divided into 20 OTUs based on 98% nucleotide identity. Fifteen OTUs (accounting 76.8% of the total sequences) belonged to hyperthermophilic Desulfurococcales species, and two OTUs (accounting for 15.9% of the total number of sequences) belonged to hyperthermophilic Thermoproteales species of the Crenarchaeota phylum, whereas three OTUs (accounting 7.32% of the total number of sequences) belonged to Thermococcales species of the Euryarchaeota kingdom (Fig. (Fig.2).2). Members of the crenarchaeal MGI, which was thought to be the source of nonthermophilic AOA (6, 8), were not detected in this library. Therefore, PCR using MGI-specific primers was performed to further detect MGI species (for PCR primers and conditions, see Table Table11 and reference 14). MGI species were easily detected in sample 4143-1A, but not in samples 4136-1 and 4148-1A, by direct PCR amplification. A nested PCR method employing generic archaeal 16S rRNA gene primers was then performed for the first round of PCR followed by MGI-selective PCR primers for the second round of PCR. This procedure created a PCR band of the correct size for MGI species from sample 4136-1; that band was later shown by cloning and sequencing to represent an MGI 16S rRNA gene fragment (see Fig. S1 in the supplemental material). The data implied that some of the amoA genes detected in the chimney samples may have come from MGI species; however, to determine the origin of the amoA genes, especially those in the chimney groups I and II, isolation or enrichment of the organisms would be necessary.Open in a separate windowFIG. 2.Phylogenetic tree showing the affiliations of 16S rRNA gene sequences retrieved from hydrothermal vent chimney 4136-1 (in boldface) with selected reference sequences of the Archaea domain. The subseafloor microbial habitat associated with typical unsedimented mid-ocean-ridge hydrothermal vent ecosystems may be limited by the availability of fixed nitrogen, inferred by the low ammonium and nitrate concentrations measured in diffuse hydrothermal fluid. Dissolved N2 gas, the largest reservoir of nitrogen in the ocean, is abundant in deep-sea and hydrothermal vent fluid. In order to test the hypothesis that biological nitrogen fixation plays an important role in nitrogen cycling in the subseafloor associated with unsedimented hydrothermal vents, degenerate PCR primers were designed to amplify the nitrogenase iron protein gene nifH from hydrothermal vent fluid. A total of 120 nifH sequences were obtained from four samples: a nitrogen-poor diffuse vent named marker 33 on Axial Volcano, sampled twice over a period of 1 year as its temperature decreased; a nitrogen-rich diffuse vent near Puffer on Endeavour Segment; and deep seawater with no detectable hydrothermal plume signal. Subseafloor nifH genes from marker 33 and Puffer are related to anaerobic clostridia and sulfate reducers. Other nifH genes unique to the vent samples include proteobacteria and divergent Archaea. All of the nifH genes from the deep-seawater sample are most closely related to the thermophilic, anaerobic archaeon Methanococcus thermolithotrophicus (77 to 83% amino acid similarity). These results provide the first genetic evidence of potential nitrogen fixers in hydrothermal vent environments and indicate that at least two sources contribute to the diverse assemblage of nifH genes detected in hydrothermal vent fluid: nifH genes from an anaerobic, hot subseafloor and nifH genes from cold, oxygenated deep seawater.  相似文献

Ephyra larvae and small medusae (1.7–95 mm diameter, 0.01–350mg ash-free dry wt, AFDW) of the scyphozoan jellyfish Aureliaaurita were used in predation experiments with phytoplankton(the flagellate Isochrysis galbana, 4 µm diameter, {smalltilde}6 x 10–6 µg AFDW cell–1), ciliates (theoligotrich Strombidium sulcatum, 28 µm diameter, {smalltilde}2 x 10–3 µg AFDW), rotifers (Synchaeta sp.,0.5 µg AFDW individual–1) and mixed zooplankton(mainly copepods and cladocerans, 2.1–3.1 µg AFDWindividual–1). Phytoplankton in natural concentrations(50–200 µg C I–1) were not utilized by largemedusae (44–95 mm diameter). Ciliates in concentrationsfrom 0.5 to 50 individuals ml"1 were consumed by ephyra larvaeand small medusae (3–14 mm diameter) at a maximum predationrate of 171 prey day–1, corresponding to a daily rationof 0.42%. The rotifer Synchaeta sp., offered in concentrationsof 100–600 prey I–1, resulted in daily rations ofephyra larvae (2–5 mm diameter) between 1 and 13%. Mixedzooplankton allowed the highest daily rations, usually in therange 5–40%. Large medusae (>45 mm diameter) consumedbetween 2000 and 3500 prey organisms day"1 in prey concentrationsexceeding 100 I–1. Predation rate and daily ration werepositively correlated with prey abundance. Seen over a broadsize spectrum, the daily ration decreased with increased medusasize. The daily rations observed in high abundance of mixedzooplankton suggest a potential ‘scope for growth’that exceeds the growth rate observed in field populations, and this, in turn, suggests that the natural populations areusually food limited. The predicted predation rate at averageprey concentrations that are characteristic of neritic environmentscannot explain the maximum growth rates observed in field populations. It is therefore suggested that exploitation of patches of preyin high abundance is an important component in the trophodynamicsof this species. 1Present address: University of Bergen, Department of MarineBiology, N-5065 Blomsterdalen, Norway  相似文献

The deep-sea hydrothermal vent habitat hosts a diverse community of archaea and bacteria that withstand extreme fluctuations in environmental conditions. Abundant viruses in these systems, a high proportion of which are lysogenic, must also withstand these environmental extremes. Here, we explore the evolutionary strategies of both microorganisms and viruses in hydrothermal systems through comparative analysis of a cellular and viral metagenome, collected by size fractionation of high temperature fluids from a diffuse flow hydrothermal vent. We detected a high enrichment of mobile elements and proviruses in the cellular fraction relative to microorganisms in other environments. We observed a relatively high abundance of genes related to energy metabolism as well as cofactors and vitamins in the viral fraction compared to the cellular fraction, which suggest encoding of auxiliary metabolic genes on viral genomes. Moreover, the observation of stronger purifying selection in the viral versus cellular gene pool suggests viral strategies that promote prolonged host integration. Our results demonstrate that there is great potential for hydrothermal vent viruses to integrate into hosts, facilitate horizontal gene transfer, and express or transfer genes that manipulate the hosts’ functional capabilities.  相似文献

Seals have adapted their social systems and lactation strategies to marine environments that include open and ice-covered oceans, high and low productivity, extremes in seasonality, and ocean- and terrestrial-type predators. Different explanations for the variation in pinniped lactation systems have been proposed but tests of alternative hypotheses have not sufficiently accounted for phylogeny and body size. After controlling for this variation, I predicted that environment, mating habitat, and predation would yield a fuller explanation. Lactation traits, duration, pup growth rate, and fat content were significantly influenced by both body size and phylogeny, which together explained 20–69% of the variation. After controlling for this variation, initial results did not support the environment hypothesis, as no differences in lactation traits were found between species living in polar (≥60°N) versus equatorial (<60°N) environments. In contrast, seals that nurse in areas of Arctic sea ice contending with ice-hunting predators, such as polar bears, had relatively short lactation compared to species living in the Antarctic and more equatorial regions. Also, the availability of predator-free islands for terrestrial mating and parturition was related to a harem mating system, increased sexual size dimorphism (SSD), and slow juvenile growth rates, less fat in milk, and longer lactation. Using structural equation modeling, latitude and size of harems provided independent explanations for all three lactation traits. Thus, use of islands in ice-free waters, predation in Arctic ice-covered waters, and more milk fat in high-latitude seals together provided adequate explanations for the evolution of lactation diversity among pinnipeds.  相似文献

Indirect interactions between species have long been of interest to ecologists. One such interaction type takes place when energy or materials flow via one or more intermediate species between two species with a direct predator-prey relationship. Previous work has shown that, although each such flow is small, their great number makes them important in ecosystems. A new network analysis method, dynamic environ approximation, was used to quantify the fraction of energy flowing from prey to predator over paths of length greater than 1 (flow indirectness or FI) in a commonly studied food web model. Web structure was created using the niche model and dynamics followed the Yodzis-Innes model. The effect of food web size (10 to 40 species) and connectance (0.1 to 0.48) on FI was examined. For each of 250 model realizations run for each pair of size and connectance values, the FI of every predator-prey interaction in the model was computed and then averaged over the whole network. A classification and regression tree (CART) analysis was then used to find the best predictors of FI. The mean FI of the model food webs is 0.092, with a standard deviation of 0.0279. It tends to increase with system size but peaks at intermediate connectance levels. Of 27 potential predictor variables, only five (mean path length, dominant eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix, connectance, mean trophic level and fraction of species belonging to intermediate trophic levels) were selected by the CART algorithm as best accounting for variation in the data; mean path length and the dominant eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix were dominant.  相似文献

The dominant species in an early spring phytoplankton increasein characteristically antarctic waters north of South GeorgiaIsland is described as Thalassiosira scotia G. Fryx. et Hobanand compared to related species in the South Atlantic, suchas T. antarctica Comber and T. austratis Peragallo. Found ona cooperative US-Argentine cruise of the ISLAS ORCADAS 17–78,T. scotia dominated the phytoplankton in the well-mixed watercolumns of two stations more than 100 km apart. The maximumabu dance of the new species recorded in a discrete water samplewas about 315,000 cells/liter, with up to 18.4 x 109 cells undera m2 in the top 100 m, in spite of the fact that there was nowell-marked thennocline to aid in maintaining one water massand thus netaining the population in the euphotic zone. A fewresting spores were noted in one station. The water temperaturein the area was about 1°C, and the salinity 33.9 o/oo.  相似文献

High predation risk and food depletion lead to sexual reproduction in cyclically parthenogenetic Daphnia. Mating, the core of sexual reproduction, also occurs under these conditions. Assessment of the environmental conditions and alteration of mating efforts may aid in determining the success of sexual reproduction. Here, we evaluated the impacts of predation risk, food quantity, and reproductive phase of females on the mating behavior of Daphnia obtusa males including contact frequency and duration using video analysis. Mating–related behavior involved male–female contact (mating) as well as male–male contact (fighting). Mating frequency increased while unnecessary fighting decreased in the presence of predation risk. In addition, low food concentration reduced fighting between males. Males attempted to attach to sexual females more than asexual females, and fighting occurred more frequently in the presence of sexual females. Duration of mating was relatively long; however, males separated shortly after contact in terms of fighting behavior. Thus, assessment of environmental factors and primary sexing of mates were performed before actual contact, possibly mechanically, and precise sex discrimination was conducted after contact. These results suggest that mating in Daphnia is not a random process but rather a balance between predation risk and energetic cost that results in changes in mating and fighting strategies.  相似文献

Visual systems in deep-sea fishes have been previously studied from a photobiological aspect; however, those of deep-sea fish inhabiting the hydrothermal vents are far less understood due to sampling difficulties. In this study, we analyzed the visual pigment of a deep-sea snailfish, Careproctus rhodomelas, discovered and collected only near the hydrothermal vents of oceans around Japan. Proteins were solubilized from the C. rhodomelas eyeball and subjected to spectroscopic analysis, which revealed the presence of a pigment characterized by an absorption maximum (λmax) at 480 nm. Immunoblot analysis of the ocular protein showed a rhodopsin-like immunoreactivity. We also isolated a retinal cDNA encoding the entire coding sequence of putative C. rhodomelas rhodopsin (CrRh). HEK293EBNA cells were transfected with the CrRh cDNA and the proteins extracted from the cells were subjected to spectroscopic analysis. The recombinant CrRh showed the absorption maximum at 480 nm in the presence of 11-cis retinal. Comparison of the results from the eyeball extract and the recombinant CrRh strongly suggests that CrRh has an A1-based 11-cis-retinal chromophore and works as a photoreceptor in the C. rhodomelas retina, and hence that C. rhodomelas responds to dim blue light much the same as other deep-sea fishes. Because hydrothermal vent is a huge supply of viable food, C. rhodomelas likely do not need to participate diel vertical migration and may recognize the bioluminescence produced by aquatic animals living near the hydrothermal vents.  相似文献

Microorganisms are responsible for multiple antibiotic resistances that have been associated with resistance/tolerance to heavy metals, with consequences to public health. Many genes conferring these resistances are located on mobile genetic elements, easily exchanged among phylogenetically distant bacteria. The objective of the present work was to isolate arsenic-, antimonite-, and antibiotic-resistant strains and to determine the existence of plasmids harboring antibiotic/arsenic/antimonite resistance traits in phenotypically resistant strains, in a nonanthropogenically impacted environment. The hydrothermal Lucky Strike field in the Azores archipelago (North Atlantic, between 11°N and 38°N), at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, protected under the OSPAR Convention, was sampled as a metal-rich pristine environment. A total of 35 strains from 8 different species were isolated in the presence of arsenate, arsenite, and antimonite. ACR3 and arsB genes were amplified from the sediment''s total DNA, and 4 isolates also carried ACR3 genes. Phenotypic multiple resistances were found in all strains, and 7 strains had recoverable plasmids. Purified plasmids were sequenced by Illumina and assembled by EDENA V3, and contig annotation was performed using the “Rapid Annotation using the Subsystems Technology” server. Determinants of resistance to copper, zinc, cadmium, cobalt, and chromium as well as to the antibiotics β-lactams and fluoroquinolones were found in the 3 sequenced plasmids. Genes coding for heavy metal resistance and antibiotic resistance in the same mobile element were found, suggesting the possibility of horizontal gene transfer and distribution of theses resistances in the bacterial population.  相似文献

Sublacustrine hydrothermal vents, geysers, and fumaroles impart regions of Yellowstone Lake with distinctive chemical compositions that generate unique freshwater habitats and support diverse microbial life. Some microbial communities within Sedge Bay manifest themselves as accumulations of white-colored films on the surfaces of aquatic macrophytes located within the hydrothermal flow of vents. It was hypothesized that the white films were the product of microbial growth, particularly sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. An investigation of the relevant biological compounds in the vent waters was conducted. Microscopy, non-culture molecular techniques, and phylogenetic analysis were used to assay the bacterial diversity associated with the films. Microscopic analysis of the white films revealed the presence of long filaments (>200 μm) that contained sulfur granules. Filaments with these characteristics were not detected on the normal macrophyte samples. Nucleic acids were extracted from the surface of macrophyte coated with the white film (SB1, SB2) and from the surface of an uncoated macrophyte (SC). 16S ribosomal (rRNA) genes were amplified with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloned. Amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) was used to examine 100 clones from each library and identify unique phylotypes. SChao1 and the Shannon Index, mathematical measures of richness and heterogeneity, were employed to assess the ARDRA pattern diversity of each sample. The SC community contained 50 unique phylotypes, predominantly cyanobacteria and proteobacteria, and was the most heterogeneous. SB1 and SB2 communities were less heterogeneous and dominated by Thiothrix. Dilution to extinction PCR conducted with specific primers indicated that the relative abundance of Thiothrix 16S rRNA gene copies in all three samples were similar. However, reduced sulfur compounds from the vent resulted in a more narrow habitat that supported the sulfur-oxidizing Thiothrix in the white film to the exclusion of cyanobacteria and other proteobacteria found on the normal macrophyte. The majority of 16S rRNA gene sequences obtained in this study displayed similarities ≤98% to any known sequence in public data bases which suggests an abundance of new bacterial species in Sedge Bay.  相似文献

Background

Reconstructing the history of divergence and gene flow between closely-related organisms has long been a difficult task of evolutionary genetics. Recently, new approaches based on the coalescence theory have been developed to test the existence of gene flow during the process of divergence. The deep sea is a motivating place to apply these new approaches. Differentiation by adaptation can be driven by the heterogeneity of the hydrothermal environment while populations should not have been strongly perturbed by climatic oscillations, the main cause of geographic isolation at the surface.

Methodology/Principal Finding

Samples of DNA sequences were obtained for seven nuclear loci and a mitochondrial locus in order to conduct a multi-locus analysis of divergence and gene flow between two closely related and hybridizing species of hydrothermal vent mussels, Bathymodiolus azoricus and B. puteoserpentis. The analysis revealed that (i) the two species have started to diverge approximately 0.760 million years ago, (ii) the B. azoricus population size was 2 to 5 time greater than the B. puteoserpentis and the ancestral population and (iii) gene flow between the two species occurred over the complete species range and was mainly asymmetric, at least for the chromosomal regions studied.

Conclusions/Significance

A long history of gene flow has been detected between the two Bathymodiolus species. However, it proved very difficult to conclusively distinguish secondary introgression from ongoing parapatric differentiation. As powerful as coalescence approaches could be, we are left by the fact that natural populations often deviates from standard assumptions of the underlying model. A more direct observation of the history of recombination at one of the seven loci studied suggests an initial period of allopatric differentiation during which recombination was blocked between lineages. Even in the deep sea, geographic isolation may well be a crucial promoter of speciation.  相似文献

Organohalogen compounds are some of the most notorious persistent pollutants disturbing the Earth biosphere. Although human-made, these chemicals are not completely alien to living systems. A large number of natural organohalogens, part of the secondary metabolism, are involved in chemical trophic interactions. Surprisingly, the relationship between organisms' trophic position and synthetic organohalogen biotransformation capability has not been investigated. We studied the case for polybromodiphenyl ethers (PBDE), a group of flame-retardants of widespread use in the recent years, in aquatic food webs from remote mountain lakes. These relatively simple ecosystems only receive pollution by atmospheric transport. A large predominance of the PBDE congener currently in use in Europe, BDE-209, largely dominated the PBDE composition of the basal resources of the food web. In contrast, primary consumers (herbivores and detritivores) showed a low proportion of BDE-209, and dominance of several less brominated congeners (e.g. BDE-100, BDE47). Secondary consumers (predators) showed large biomagnification of BDE-209 compare to other congeners. Finally, top predator fish characterized by low total PBDE concentrations. Examination of the bromine stable isotopic composition indicates that primary consumers showed higher PBDE biotransformation capability than secondary consumers. We suggest that the evolutionary response of primary consumers to feeding deterrents would have pre-adapted them for PBDE biotransformation. The observed few exceptions, some insect taxa, can be interpreted in the light of the trophic history of the evolutionary lineage of the organisms. Bromine isotopic composition in fish indicates that low PBDE values are due to not only biotransformation but also to some other process likely related to transport. Our finding illustrates that organohalogen compounds may strongly disturb ecosystems even at low concentrations, since the species lacking or having scarce biotransformation capability may be selectively more exposed to these halogenated hydrophobic semi-volatile organic pollutants due to their high bioaccumulation potential.  相似文献

Revealing the interactions between alien species and native communities is central to understanding the ecological consequences of range expansion. Much has been learned through study of the communities developing around invading herbivorous insects. Much less, however, is known about the significance of such aliens for native vertebrate predators for which invaders may represent a novel food source. We quantified spatial patterns in native bird predation of invading gall-inducing Andricus wasps associated with introduced Turkey oak (Quercus cerris) at eight sites across the UK. These gallwasps are available at high density before the emergence of caterpillars that are the principle spring food of native insectivorous birds. Native birds showed positive spatial density dependence in gall attack rates at two sites in southern England, foraging most extensively on trees with highest gall densities. In a subsequent study at one of these sites, positive spatial density dependence persisted through four of five sequential week-long periods of data collection. Both patterns imply that invading galls are a significant resource for at least some native bird populations. Density dependence was strongest in southern UK bird populations that have had longest exposure to the invading gallwasps. We hypothesise that this pattern results from the time taken for native bird populations to learn how to exploit this novel resource.  相似文献

In studying the spatial and temporal patterns of acorn predation of Quercus liaotungensis Koidz. by vertebrates, Three forests in Dongling Mountain, Northern China, including a broad-leaved forest, a Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. forest and a Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr. forest were selected in which acorn predation was observed in the peak period of acornfall and the period after natural acornfall. The survival of acorn from predation was influenced by forest types and period of acornfall as well as the interaction of forest types and the period of acornfall. The rates of acorn loss are high in the Pinus tabulaeformis forest and Larix principis-rupprechtii forest in both peak period of acornfall and period after natural acornfall. All the acorns deployed on the ground disappeared within two days. In the broad-leaved forest, the rate of acorn loss was high in the period after natural acornfall, but low in the peak period of acornfall probably due to predator satiation. In addition, the acorn removal by the small mammals under study was different among 3 forests. These results suggest that small vertebrates play an important role in predating and dispersing acorns with different spatial and temporal patterns which may affect the acorn fate in different types of forests and the establishment of seedlings as well as the natural regeneration of Q. liaotungensis population.  相似文献
