In this review we summarize factors determining the plant availability of soil potassium (K), the role of K in crop yield formation and product quality, and the dependence of crop stress resistance on K nutrition. Average soil reserves of K are generally large, but most of it is not plant-available. Therefore, crops need to be supplied with soluble K fertilizers, the demand of which is expected to increase significantly, particularly in developing regions of the world. Recent investigations have shown that organic exudates of some bacteria and plant roots play a key role in releasing otherwise unavailable K from K-bearing minerals. Thus, breeding for genotypes that have improved mechanisms to gain access to this fixed K will contribute toward more sustainable agriculture, particularly in cropping systems that do not have access to fertilizer K. In K-deficient crops, the supply of sink organs with photosynthates is impaired, and sugars accumulate in source leaves. This not only affects yield formation, but also quality parameters, for example in wheat, potato and grape. As K has beneficial effects on human health, its concentration in the harvest product is a quality parameter in itself. Owing to its fundamental roles in turgor generation, primary metabolism, and long-distance transport, K plays a prominent role in crop resistance to drought, salinity, high light, or cold as well as resistance to pests and pathogens. Despite the abundance of vital roles of K in crop production, an improvement of K uptake and use efficiency has not been a major focus of conventional or transgenic breeding in the past. In addition, current soil analysis methods for K are insufficient for some common soils, posing the risk of imbalanced fertilization. A stronger prioritization of these areas of research is needed to counter declines in soil fertility and to improve food security. 相似文献

Guillain-Barré syndrome is the most common polyneuropathy causing major disability and respiratory failure. Respiratory complications are the main cause of death. Improved respiratory care and new treatment strategies such as plasmaphoresis and immunoglobulin have been shown to improve outcome. We studied the course and outcome of 37 patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome who were admitted to a rehabilitation and respiratory care facility over a 10-year period. There were 21 males and 16 females with a mean age of 62+/-3 years. Fourteen patients developed respiratory failure requiring endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation. The mean duration of mechanical ventilation was 38+/-10 days. All patients were successfully liberated from the ventilator. However, 83 percent of the patients were moderately to severely disabled at the time of discharge. Thirteen out of 37 (35 percent) developed long-term disability. None of the patients died over the period of follow-up. These results indicate that early recognition and treatment of respiratory complications in Guillain-Barré syndrome could reduce the morbidity and mortality of this condition. 相似文献

Species-rich plant communities appear to defy the competitive exclusion principle, showing relatively few obvious niche differences between coexisting species. Here we explore alternatives to the potentially endless search for new niche axes. Spatial aggregation in populations, non-transitive competition, episodes of density-independent mortality and various non-equilibrium theories allow trophically similar species to coexist for extended periods. In perennial plants or annuals with a seed pool, asynchrony between species in recruitment permits coexistence by the 'storage effect'. There is increasing evidence that species-specific herbivores and pathogens regulate populations of tropical trees to low levels at which competitive exclusion does not occur. The wide variety of alternatives to niche differentiation lead us to question whether plants need occupy different niches to coexist. 相似文献

Background
Metabolomics aims to identify the changes in endogenous metabolites of biological systems in response to intrinsic and extrinsic factors. This is accomplished through untargeted, semi-targeted and targeted based approaches. Untargeted and semi-targeted methods are typically applied in hypothesis-generating investigations (aimed at measuring as many metabolites as possible), while targeted approaches analyze a relatively smaller subset of biochemically important and relevant metabolites. Regardless of approach, it is well recognized amongst the metabolomics community that gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) is one of the most efficient, reproducible and well used analytical platforms for metabolomics research. This is due to the robust, reproducible and selective nature of the technique, as well as the large number of well-established libraries of both commercial and ‘in house’ metabolite databases available.Aim of review
This review provides an overview of developments in GC–MS based metabolomics applications, with a focus on sample preparation and preservation techniques. A number of chemical derivatization (in-time, in-liner, offline and microwave assisted) techniques are also discussed. Electron impact ionization and a summary of alternate mass analyzers are highlighted, along with a number of recently reported new GC columns suited for metabolomics. Lastly, multidimensional GC–MS and its application in environmental and biomedical research is presented, along with the importance of bioinformatics.Key scientific concepts of review
The purpose of this review is to both highlight and provide an update on GC–MS analytical techniques that are common in metabolomics studies. Specific emphasis is given to the key steps within the GC–MS workflow that those new to this field need to be aware of and the common pitfalls that should be looked out for when starting in this area.6.

Chemical measurements are designed to classify acid sensitive streams in Baden-Württemberg (South West Germany) as a basis on which a biological indication method for stream acidity is worked out. Sampling of macrozoobenthos is carried out as a basis for the biological classification of the degree of acidity in acid sensitive silicate streams. Interlinking of the chemical and biological data is made with, among others, statistical methods aiming to describe the pH values and other parameters relevant to acidification which effect the presence of the organisms. The sensitivity levels of the benthic macroinvertebrates are related to the pH values and the corresponding indicator values for the bioindication are assigned to the current acidification level of the calcium-poor streams. Relevant data, information, and procedures from literature were hereby taken into account. Computer-aided assessment of the acidity status of the slightly-buffered streams based on the macrobenthic cenosis following the principle of maximum biological sensitivity of the individual taxa has been carried out. This has been done by successive examination of the values of all observed indicator species, beginning with the most acid sensitive ones. Cartographic presentation of the biological results – obtained between 1992 and 1998 – reveals a slight improvement of the degree of acidity in streams of the Black Forest. This can also be observed in the chemical data. Most sampling sites show an increasing trend in pH-values as well as in buffer capacity. On the other hand most of the streams in poorly buffered areas show a declining trend in their aluminium concentrations and their content of sulphate-ions, which is a consequence of the decreasing sulphur-dioxide concentrations in the air during the last 15 years. 相似文献

Modulation of NMDA receptors by glycine — introduction to some basic aspects and recent developments
Dr. C. G. Parsons W. Danysz M. Hesselink S. Hartmann B. Lorenz C. Wollenburg G. Quack 《Amino acids》1998,14(1-3):207-216
Summary Glycine is a co-agonist at NMDA receptors and it's presence is a prerequisite for channel activation by glutamate or NMDA. Physiological concentrations reduce one form of NMDA receptor-desensitization. Interactions between the glycineB site and other domains of the NMDA receptor are complex and include the glutamate, Mg+ and polyamines sites. Glycine shows different affinities at various NMDA receptor subtypes probably via to allosteric interactions between NMDA2 subunits and the glycine recognition site on the NMDAR1 subunit. There is still some debate whether the glycineB site is saturatedin vivo but it seems likely that this depends on regional differences in receptor subtype expression, local glycine or D-serene concentrations and the expression of specific glycine transporters.GlycineB antagonists and partial agonists have been reported to have good therapeutic indices as neuroprotective agents against focal ischaemia and trauma, anti-epileptics, anxiolytics, anti-psychotomimetics and in models of chronic pain. They clearly lack two potentially serious side effects classically associated with NMDA receptor blockade, namely neurodegenerative changes in the cingulate/retrosplenial cortex and psychotomimetic-like effects. This improved therapeutic profile may be partially due to the ability of full glycineB antagonists to reveal Gycne-sensitive desensitization and possibly also via functional and/or regional NMDA receptor subtype selectivity. 相似文献

The concepts and methods of the different branches of epidemiology, particularly clinical epidemiology, have much to offer the discipline of theriogenology. As with theriogenology, epidemiologic methods evolve when technological innovation enables new approaches to old problems. The recent emergence, from clinical epidemiology, of the evidence-based medicine paradigm in human medicine, and the associated developments of systematic reviews and meta-analysis, present new opportunities for collaboration and synergy between the two disciplines. 相似文献

Background
Management of cardiac surgery patients is a very standardized procedure in respective local institutions. Yet only very limited evidence exists concerning optimal indication, safety and efficacy of hemodynamic monitoring catecholamine and fluid therapy. Methods
Between April and May 2013, all 81 German anaesthesia departments involved in cardiac surgery care were asked to participate in a questionnaire addressing the institutional specific current practice in hemodynamic monitoring, catecholamine and volume therapy. Results
51 (63%) questionnaires were completed and returned. All participating centers used basic hemodynamic monitoring (i.e. invasive arterial blood pressure and central venous pressure), supplemented by transesophageal echocardiography. Pulmonary arterial catheter and calibrated trend monitoring devices were also routinely available. In contrast, non-calibrated trend monitoring and esophageal doppler ultrasound devices were not commonly in use. Cerebral oximetry is increasingly emerging, but lacks clear indications. The majority of patients undergoing cardiac surgery, especially in university hospitals, required catecholamines during perioperative care, In case of low cardiac output syndrome, dobutamine (32%), epinephrine (30%) or phosphodiesterase inhibitors (8%) were first choice. In case of hypotension following vasoplegia, norepinephrine (96%) represented the most common catecholamine. 88% of the participating centers reported regular use of colloid fluids, with hydroxyethyl starches (HES) being first choice (64%).Conclusions
Choice of hemodynamic monitoring is homogenous throughout German centers treating cardiac surgery patients. Norepinephrine is the first line catecholamine in cases of decrease in peripheral vascular resistance. However, catecholamine choice for low cardiac output syndrome varies considerably. HES was the primary colloid used for fluid resuscitation. After conduct of this survey, HES use was restricted by European regulatory authorities in critically ill patients and should only be considered as second-line fluid in surgical patients without renal impairment or severe coagulopathy. Large clinical studies addressing catecholamine and fluid therapy in cardiac surgery patients are lacking. 相似文献15.
Central venous catheters (CVCs) nowadays constitute critical devices used in medical care, namely in intensive care units. However, CVCs also represent one of the indwelling medical devices with enhanced risk of nosocomial device-related infection. Catheter-related infections (CRIs) are a major cause of patient morbidity and mortality, often justifying premature catheter removal and an increase in costs and use of resources. Adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation on the surfaces of indwelling catheters is elemental to the onset of pathogenesis. Seeking the prevention of CVC colonisation and CRI, a variety of approaches have been studied, tested and, in some cases, already applied in clinical practice. This review looks at the current preventive strategies often used to decrease the risk of CRIs due to colonization and biofilm formation on catheter surfaces, as well as at the more recent approaches under investigation. 相似文献

Peptic ulcer is a common disorder of gastrointestinal system and its pathogenesis is multifactorial, where smoking and nicotine have significant adverse effects. Smoking and chronic nicotine treatment stimulate basal acid output which is more pronounced in the smokers having duodenal ulcer. This increased gastric acid secretion is mediated through the stimulation of H2-receptor by histamine released after mast cell degranulation and due to the increase of the functional parietal cell volume or secretory capacity in smokers. Smoking and nicotine stimulate pepsinogen secretion also by increasing chief cell number or with an enhancement of their secretory capacity. Long-term nicotine treatment in rats also significantly decreases total mucus neck cell population and neck-cell mucus volume. Smoking also increases bile salt reflux rate and gastric bile salt concentration thereby increasing duodenogastric reflux that raises the risk of gastric ulcer in smokers. Smoking and nicotine not only induce ulceration, but they also potentiate ulceration caused by H. pylori, alcohol, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or cold restrain stress. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) play an important role in ulcerogenesis through oxidative damage of the mucosa by increasing the generation of reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI), which is potentiated by nicotine and smoking. Nicotine by a cAMP-protein kinase A signaling system elevates the endogenous vasopressin level, which plays an aggressive role in the development of gastroduodenal lesions. Smoking increases production of platelet activating factor (PAF) and endothelin, which are potent gastric ulcerogens. Cigarette smoking and nicotine reduce the level of circulating epidermal growth factor (EGF) and decrease the secretion of EGF from the salivary gland, which are necessary for gastric mucosal cell renewal. Nicotine also decreases prostaglandin generation in the gastric mucosa of smokers, thereby making the mucosa susceptible to ulceration. ROI generation and ROI-mediated gastric mucosal cell apoptosis are also considered to be important mechanism for aggravation of ulcer by cigarette smoke or nicotine. Both smoking and nicotine reduce angiogenesis in the gastric mucosa through inhibition of nitric oxide synthesis thereby arresting cell renewal process. Smoking or smoke extract impairs both spontaneous and drug-induced healing of ulcer. Smoke extract also inhibits gastric mucosal cell proliferation by reducing ornithine decarboxylase activity, which synthesises growth-promoting polyamines. It is concluded that gastric mucosal integrity is maintained by an interplay of some aggressive and defensive factors controlling apoptotic cell death and cell proliferation and smoking potentiates ulcer by disturbing this balance. 相似文献

In a cohort study among 2751 members (71.5% females) of the German and Swiss RLS patient organizations changes in restless legs syndrome (RLS) severity over time was assessed and the impact on quality of life, sleep quality and depressive symptoms was analysed. A standard set of scales (RLS severity scale IRLS, SF-36, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) in mailed questionnaires was repeatedly used to assess RLS severity and health status over time and a 7-day diary once to assess short-term variations. A clinically relevant change of the RLS severity was defined by a change of at least 5 points on the IRLS scale. During 36 months follow-up minimal improvement of RLS severity between assessments was observed. Men consistently reported higher severity scores. RLS severity increased with age reaching a plateau in the age group 45–54 years. During 3 years 60.2% of the participants had no relevant (±5 points) change in RLS severity. RLS worsening was significantly related to an increase in depressive symptoms and a decrease in sleep quality and quality of life. The short-term variation showed distinctive circadian patterns with rhythm magnitudes strongly related to RLS severity. The majority of participants had a stable course of severe RLS over three years. An increase in RLS severity was accompanied by a small to moderate negative, a decrease by a small positive influence on quality of life, depressive symptoms and sleep quality. 相似文献

In addition to newly generated and continuously growing datasets in mycological research, existing compilations are of high
value to assess the fungi of a whole region. In the present study, a private database with ca. 65,000 entries of macromycetous
fruit body observations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, was analysed. Observed species richness of tree-associated
mycorrhizal and saprobic fungi exceeded 3,000 taxa. The total fungal species richness could not be determined with confidence
but will possibly exceed 4,000. Distinct species turnover with respect to host trees was observed. However, the rate of community
overlap clearly differed between mycorrhizal and saprobic fungi and deciduous and coniferous trees. By separating the data
into abundant core species and rare satellite taxa potential indicator species are presented, whose preservation will be beneficial
to many other fungi and the entire ecosystems they live in. 相似文献
