Denver, Tokyo, and Salt Lake City investigators recently published different complimentary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) sequences for human liver xanthine dehydrogenase/xanthine oxidase (XD/XO). The gene encoding the Denver cDNA was subsequently linked to juvenile familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (JFALS) at chromosome 2q33 and has been proposed as the ALS2 locus. The present investigation was undertaken to elucidate the differences between the three cDNA sequences, and we provide evidence that the Denver cDNA encodes aldehyde oxidase (AO): first, the Denver cDNA sequence diverged significantly from the Tokyo and Salt Lake City cDNA sequences which were very similar; second, the deduced protein sequence from the Denver cDNA was very similar to the amino acid sequence of purified rabbit liver AO protein; third, the deduced Denver protein sequence was 76% identical to the encoded 101 amino acid long peptides from partial cDNAs for rabbit and rat AO and 81.7% identical to 300 amino acids from an incomplete cDNA encoding bovine AO; fourth, the Denver gene was expressed in liver, kidney, lung, pancreas, prostate, testes, and ovary while the Tokyo XD gene was expressed predominantly in liver and small intestine; fifth, the Denver gene was previously mapped to chromosome 2q33 which is syntenic to the mouse AO locus on chromosome 1. Our results have revealed dramatic similarities in protein and DNA sequence in the human molybdenum hydroxylases, have uncovered unanticipated complexity in the human molybdenum hydroxylase genes, and advance the potential for AO derived oxygen radicals in JFALS and other human diseases.  相似文献

Five hatchling Komodo Dragons (Varanus komodoensis) at Denver Zoo were observed in two experiments that studied the effects of visual and chemical cues arising from prey. Rate of tongue flicking was recorded in Experiment 1, and amount of time the lizards spent interacting with stimuli was recorded in Experiment 2. Our hypothesis was that young V. komodoensis would be more dependent upon vision than chemoreception, especially when dealing with live, moving, prey. Although visual cues, including prey motion, had a significant effect, chemical cues had a far stronger effect. Implications of this falsification of our initial hypothesis are discussed. The prevalence of hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in the mid-United States is not well defined. We tested 65 patients seen between 1983 and 1986 with HBV infection in Denver for evidence of coexisting HDV infection. Five patients had anti-delta (δ) antibody. The prevalence of HDV infection was higher in patients with chronic hepatitis B (4/37) than in patients with acute hepatitis B (1/28). The prevalence of HDV infection in male homosexuals (3/32) was similar to reported figures, but the incidence of δ-infection in intravenous drug users in Denver was usually low (1/16). In comparison to Los Angeles, New York, southern Italy, and Sweden, Denver appears to have a low incidence of HDV infection, which probably reflects its low prevalence in the drug-using population.  相似文献

A male common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) was observed giving a flehmen grimace on 14 occasions in July and August of 1998 at the Denver Zoo. Twelve instances of flehmen occurred after anogenital investigation of the female as she was exiting the pool. The two other instances of flehmen occurred in the terrestrial portion of the enclosure after the male examined samples of the female's freshly voided urine. The frequency of flehmen increased as the female approached estrus. Flehmen in common hippos may be an example of an evolutionary remnant. Zoo Biol 18:415–420, 1999. © 1999 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Individuals of two polyphagous grasshopper species,Melanoplus differentialis andSchistocerca albolineata, were reared under standardized conditions to eliminate prior experience as an influence on feeding behavior. Individuals were offered four plants in simultaneous choice tests from 8 to 14 times during development to adulthood. Individual insects varied in the preferred plant and the strength of preference, in the strength of the preference hierarchy among the four plants, and in breadth of feeding in choice tests. Average feeding diversity in choice tests increased significantly in later instars, but the sexes did not differ in feeding pattern. In both species a significant preference for one plant was generally but not invariably associated with a consistent preference hierarchy. Breadth of feeding in all tests was inversely related to the strength of preference and of the preference hierarchy. Although the two species differed in feeding diversity and in the relationship between preference and strength of preference hierarchy, evidence suggests that these differences were due to the specific plants used rather than to true interspecific differences. The existence of such variation under highly standardized rearing conditions suggests that genetic variation for these characteristics may exist in natural populations of polyphagous grasshoppers.  相似文献

Analysis of field established xenogeneic interactions among five Porites species from Sesoko Island, Okinawa, revealed a transitive type of hierarchy as: P. rus > P. cylindrica > P. lobata > P. australiensis> P. lutea. Out of the 111 interspecific encounters studied, in only 5.4% reciprocal interactions were recorded, and in a single case, the opposite directionality of hierarchy was documented. Allogeneic encounters were also observed. A single major effector mechanism, an overgrowth (together with secondary outcomes such as the formation of small points of rejection, bleaching and pink color formation along a narrow peripheral belt of contacting tissues), was the only response in all 10 xenogeneic and 5 allogeneic combinations. In some massive colonies, a long contacting line of up to 50 cm was established. No sign for allelopathy, stand-off or rejection from a distance (i.e., by sweeper tentacles, sweeper polyps) was observed. Results are discussed with the accumulated data on Porites species from different reefs, worldwide, confirming that this genus is commonly lower in the hierarchy of xenogeneic interactions.  相似文献

Cultures of freshwater algae were assembled into artificial communities consisting of 2, 3, 4 and 8 species. The same species were also grown simultaneously in unialgal cultures in separate containers. Different combinations of algae in the same-sized artificial communities were grown three times for 17 weeks. Data obtained from the algae grown separately were treated in the same manner as those from algae grown in the artificial communities. The algae grown as unicultures in separate containers were found to grow in a descending order of abundance: a hierarchical order. When they grew as part of a community, several things happened: (1) all species were inhibited in growth; (2) the inhibition among the species was not uniform; (3) the species often exchanged numerical position in the hierarchy; and (4) the hierarchical order always increased, the degree of hierarchy being determined from the formula ?Σpi ln pi . The greater hierarchy in the communities means there was less evenness of numerical distribution and, therefore, less diversity. This study corroborated Connell's intermediate disturbance hypothesis from the aspect of the increase in hierarchy. Normally, this hypothesis has referred to the reduction of the number of species in an undisturbed community.  相似文献

Dominance hierarchy in the primitively eusocial wasp Polistes japonicus was analysed in four colonies for two periods: (1) the first-brood period, when only early emerging workers are present on the nest, and (2) the mixed-brood period, when the first and second (last) broods are present on the nest. The rank in the dominance hierarchy was determined based on a sociogram showing a dominance–subordinance relationship for all pairs of workers. During the first-brood period, older workers were likely to be more dominant (older dominance hierarchy), while the rank of workers was reversed during the mixed-brood period, with younger workers being likely to be more dominant (younger dominance hierarchy). However, the oldest and youngest workers were not always the top-ranked workers in the dominance hierarchy during the first- and mixed-brood periods, respectively, and during the mixed-brood period no younger dominance hierarchy was evident when the first or second brood was analysed separately. Higher ranked workers displayed dominance behaviour more frequently, and the lowest ranked worker hardly displayed dominance behaviour. Most workers displayed dominance behaviours primarily towards the worker ranked immediately below in the dominance hierarchy during the mixed-brood period but not during the first-brood period. The bodies of younger workers were larger for the mixed brood, but not for the first brood in some colonies or the second brood in all colonies. The association between body size and rank in the dominance hierarchy was negative during the first-brood period and positive during the mixed-brood period, with a nearly significant trend also seen even when the analysis was limited to the second brood. To explain the above temporal change from an older dominance hierarchy to a younger dominance hierarchy, we propose the hypothesis that the probability of a worker inheriting the colony increases rapidly with colony development, and consequently younger larger workers attempt to move up the dominance hierarchy in order to produce their own offspring by becoming the superseder late in colony development, rather than working harmoniously so as to boost the overall production of reproductive progeny for a colony, which is the strategy adopted early in colony development.  相似文献

Changes in dominance rank for adolescent and subadult natal males in a semi-free-ranging rhesus macaque group were seasonal. Three 4-year-old natal males of the highest-ranking matriline occupied high ranks in the adult male dominance hierarchy during the premating period. In the mating season they dropped in rank, and this decrement was related to a concomitant drop in their alliances. After the mating season, these males rose in rank along with their two 3-year-old kin to occupy ranks 2–5 and 7–8 in the adult male dominance hierarchy. Three-year-old natal males of matrilines lower ranking than first did not become integrated into the hierarchy at this time.  相似文献

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α is a key pro-inflammatory cytokine, thought to be important in the pathogenesis of pulmonary emphysema. TNF-α overexpression in the lung leads to the phenotypic features of pulmonary emphysema, pulmonary hypertension, and right ventricular hypertrophy in mice bred in Denver, 5240 feet/1600 m of altitude. This study hypothesized that the altitude could affect the development of pulmonary emphysema as well as pulmonary hypertension. To investigate the effect of the altitude, TNF-α transgenic mice were bred at sea level, Fukuoka, Japan. The pulmonary physiology and histology demonstrated similar development of pulmonary emphysema, compared to the mice bred in Denver. With respect to pulmonary hypertension, right ventricular hypertrophy was attenuated. Interestingly, mortality rate was significant lower in the mice bred at sea level. In contrast with the results in Denver, a significant decrease of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors expression was not found. From these data, we consider that the altitude affects development of pulmonary hypertension through the expression of VEGF and its receptors. In contrast, the effect of altitude was not clear regarding the development of pulmonary emphysema.  相似文献

The genetic profile of theFelis catus population of Humboldt County, California, has been determined. Genetic distance analysis reveals closest affinities with east coastFelis and a statistically identical relationship with northern New Spain populations. Evidence of allele input from early 19th century Russia is discernible but weak. Denver, Colorado and Reno, Nevada, retain evidence of allele input from New Spain populations. Of the Northwest coast populations studied, Vancouver, British Columbia, alone does not retain evidence of the postulated allele input from late 18th century and early 19th century European sources.  相似文献

Recognition and social dominance inPolistes wasps   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It has been known for a long time that relationships among femalePolistes wasps are controlled by dominance through linear hierarchy. A classical model of the development of social hierarchies suggests that individual recognition intervenes to maintain the hierarchy established after the initial confrontation that takes place when two animals meet for the first time. This hypothesis was tested in the present study onPolistes gallicus (L.) foundresses. A tolerance index was calculated from the reactions of a dominant female when already known or unacquainted females were successively encountered. Results show that individualised social recognition is possible and that it takes more than 4 h of inter-individual contact for individual characteristics to be memorised.  相似文献

We studied agonistic dominance and priority of access to a limited drinking resource in two captive groups of Eulemur fulvus mayottensis.Gender is not systematically related to agonistic dominance or to drinking priority. The dominance hierarchy obtained in the drinking competition test is correlated with the baseline hierarchy in the absence of induced competition, but not with drinking priority. We analyze results within the framework of recent dicussions on female dominance in Malagasy prosimians.  相似文献

Rates of ebullition and composition of bubbles were measured along a nutrient-enriched segment of the South Platte River below Denver, Colorado. Ebullition was widespread in the South Platte up to 81 km downstream from Denver. Ebullitive fluxes of 0.44 and 0.29 g N m−2 d−1 were recorded at two sites downstream of Denver and represented 6–16% of the diffusive N2 efflux from this region. These data indicate that not accounting for ebullitive N2 losses can, at some locations, lead to a considerable underestimation of dentrification rates using the open-channel (gas exchange) method. Gas bubbles often were >98% N2; methane dominated in a few organic-rich areas. Rates of ebullition related significantly to variations in temperature and dissolved organic carbon. Ebullition was not observed in four tributaries of the South Platte River, despite their moderate to high concentrations of nitrate and dissolved organic carbon. The data demonstrate that ebullition can contribute significantly to N2 effluxes in running waters exhibiting high rates of denitrification.  相似文献

This paper presents an analysis of variance (ANOVA) approach by which estimation of F-statistics can be made from data with an arbitrary s-level hierarchical population structure. Assuming a complete random-effect model, a general ANOVA procedure is developed to estimate F-statistics as ratios of different variance components for all levels of population subdivision in the hierarchy. A generalized relationship among F-statistics is also derived to extend the well-known relationship originally found by Sewall Wright. Although not entirely free from the bias particular to small number of subdivisions at each hierarchy and extreme gene frequencies, the ANOVA estimators of F-statistics consider sampling effects at each level of hierarchy, thus removing the bias incurred in the other estimators that are commonly based on direct substitution of unknown gene frequencies by their sample estimates. Therefore, the ANOVA estimation procedure presented here may become increasingly useful in analyzing complex population structure because of increasing use of the estimated hierarchical F-statistics to infer genetic and demographic structures of natural populations within and among species.  相似文献

Abstract. A competitive effect hierarchy for 15 Namaqualand pioneer plant species was established by using the mean mass of the phytometer (Dimorphotheca sinuata) when grown in combination with itself and 14 other species. There were no clear groupings of species in the hierarchy. This competitive hierarchy (gradient) indicated which species are strong competitors (resulting in a low phytometer mass) with D. sinuata and which species are weak competitors (resulting in a high phytometer mass). Each plant species has a certain combination of plant traits which determines its life history strategy and competitive ability. Regressions of various plant traits (measured on plants grown singly) against phytometer biomass indicated which traits were significantly correlated. The traits, most being size-related, were: maximum shoot mass, total mass, stem mass, reproductive mass, leaf area, stem allocation, specific leaf area (SLA), vegetative height × diameter, leaf area ratio (LAR); and mean number of days to flower initiation. A forward stepwise multiple regression of the significant traits was used to determine an equation to predict competitive effect.  相似文献

Summary. In many animal societies aggressive interactions regulate essential features such as feeding order and reproductive rights. Because aggressive interactions are costly the number of individuals competing for direct reproduction (hopeful reproductives) affects colony productivity. Using mathematical models, based on the costs/benefits trade-off for a worker to attempt to become a reproductive, we determine the number of hopeful reproductives expected to occur in insect societies with totipotent workers and several reproductives. The model is based on the biology of the polygynous queenless ant Rhytidoponera confusa (Formicidae: Ectatomminae), where every worker can potentially reproduce but only a few actually do, but is valid for all societies with totipotent individuals. We compare the number of hopeful reproductives predicted in the absence of a dominance hierarchy and with a linear dominance hierarchy, and we investigate the effects of colony size, relatedness, and mortality. The models show that a linear dominance hierarchy reduces the number of hopeful reproductives, and additional unpublished models show that this reduction is lower in non-linear hierarchies. Dominance hierarchies are thus favoured by natural selection. Larger colony size and higher mortalities result in longer hierarchy, whereas higher relatedness shortens hierarchy length. These predictions were successfully tested with eight colonies of R. confusa.Received 2 August 2004; revised 10 January 2005; accepted 12 January 2005.  相似文献

In this study, we analyzed the dynamic motor patterns of attack or defense and age hierarchy to investigate aggression in African mole-rats Cryptomys foxi and the house mouse Mus musculus. The objective is to verify if the social order of dominance is associated with age hierarchy within the social group. Using the resident-intruder experimental model, we created a series of dyadic encounters that comprised of a standard adult mouse or rat paired with groups of aggressive and hierarchically age-ranked small animals in a territorial aggression test. Our results indicate that though the adult animals displayed the highest level of aggression, indicating their dominant status, there was no age-related hierarchical formation in the expression of aggression. In the non-territorial aggression test in which rats or mice were grouped together, animals displayed low levels of aggression compared to the territorial test and no hierarchical age-related order. These results indicate that the magnitude of aggression expressed by animals in the social group, based on their motor patterns of attack and defense, seem to depend on individual competitive strategies in reaction to various environmental challenges and not necessarily on age hierarchy.  相似文献

Societies are considered in which a non-transitive dominance relation exists between every pair of members, such as the peck-right in a flock of hens. A one-dimensional measure of the structure of such a society,h, is defined, withh=0 for equality andh=1 for the hierarchy. It is assumed that each member of the society is characterized by an ability vector whose components depend on individual characteristics such as size, concentration of sex hormone, etc., but not on social factors such as social rank. The distribution of abilities among members of the society is assumed to be given by a distribution function which is the same for all members, and the probability that one member dominates another is given by a function of the ability vectors of the two. On these assumptions formulas for the expected (mean) value and variance ofh are determined in terms of the distribution and dominance probability functions. Some special cases are calculated, especially that for normany distributed abilities and dominance probability given by the normal probability integral. Several conclusions are derived. If all members are of equal ability, so that dominance probability is 1/2, then any sizable society is much more likely to be near the equality than the hierarchy; and, as the size of the society increases, the probability that it will be near the hierarchy becomes vanishingly small. If the dominance probability is a weighted sum of several independent components, which make up the ability vector, then the society is less likely to be close to the hierarchy as the number of these components increases. The hierarchy is the prevalent structure only if unreasonably small differences in ability are decisive for dominance. From this it appears that the social factors, or psychological factors such as the previous history of dominance, which are not included in the present treatment, may be of great importance in explaining the observed prevalence of structures very close to the hierarchy in flocks of domestic hens.  相似文献

Atp1a3 is the Na‐pump alpha3 subunit gene expressed mainly in neurons of the brain. Atp1a3‐deficient heterozygous mice (Atp1a3+/?) show altered neurotransmission and deficits of motor function after stress loading. To understand the function of Atp1a3 in a social hierarchy, we evaluated social behaviors (social interaction, aggression, social approach and social dominance) of Atp1a3+/? and compared the rank and hierarchy structure between Atp1a3+/? and wild‐type mice within a housing cage using the round‐robin tube test and barbering observations. Formation of a hierarchy decreases social conflict and promote social stability within the group. The hierarchical rank is a reflection of social dominance within a cage, which is heritable and can be regulated by specific genes in mice. Here we report: (1) The degree of social interaction but not aggression was lower in Atp1a3+/? than wild‐type mice, and Atp1a3+/? approached Atp1a3+/? mice more frequently than wild type. (2) The frequency of barbering was lower in the Atp1a3+/? group than in the wild‐type group, while no difference was observed in the mixed‐genotype housing condition. (3) Hierarchy formation was not different between Atp1a3+/? and wild type. (4) Atp1a3+/? showed a lower rank in the mixed‐genotype housing condition than that in the wild type, indicating that Atp1a3 regulates social dominance. In sum, Atp1a3+/? showed unique social behavior characteristics of lower social interaction and preference to approach the same genotype mice and a lower ranking in the hierarchy.  相似文献
