Examination of the digestive tracts of 31 field-collected neonatal Sceloporus jarrovii Cope, 1875, estimated to be between 1 day and 2 wk of age revealed a prevalence of 74% (23/31) infection for eggs and/or larvae of the nematode Spauligodon giganticus (Read and Amrein, 1953) Skrjabin, Schikhobalova, and Lagodovskaja, 1960, and a prevalence of 3% (1/31) for the cestode Oochoristica sp. Twenty-two captive-born neonatal Sceloporus jarrovii, no older than 1 day revealed a prevalence of 14% for eggs of Spauligodon giganticus. Substrate licking, a behavior evident soon after birth, apparently is responsible for this almost immediate infection by S. jarrovii. 相似文献

Lizards of the iguanid genus Anolis in Panama are parasitized by four species of Plasmodium. P.floridense occurs in A. limifrons, A. biporcatus, A. pentaprion and A. frenatus. The number of nuclei in mature schizonts is influenced by host species as is gametocyte shape but not gametocyte size. P. tropiduri parasitizes A. limifrons, A. pentaprion, A. biporcatus, A. frenatus, A. lionotus and A. poecilopus. The number of nuclei in schizonts varies according to host and type of blood cell parasitized. Gametocyte size varies slightly by host but shape remains relatively constant. Position of the parasite in the host cell may be affected by host species. Both schizonts and gametocytes are produced in white cells of all host species studied. P. balli occurs in A. limifrons, A. lionotus and A. poecilopus. Schizont and gametocyte size and shape are affected by host and blood cell type, with the parasite exhibiting different preferences for various blood cells in each host. P. minasense parasitizes A. limifrons, A. frenatus and A. capito, but its diagnosis in the last species may not be correct as gametocyte size and distribution of pigment differ considerably from other hosts. The mean number of nuclei in schizonts is not greatly affected by the host species. P. floridense is postulated to be of middle American origin in the genus Anolis, and to have reached Florida through the Caribbean. 相似文献

Spermiogenesis in the lizard, Iguana iguana, was studied by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. During this process, structures such as the acrosomal complex in the spermatid head and the axonemal complex in the mid and principal pieces of the flagellum are formed. The nuclear content is initially compacted into thick, longitudinal chromatin filaments. Nuclear shape is determined by further compaction and by the manchette, a layer of microtubules surrounding the head. The acrosomal complex originates from Golgi vesicles and the interaction between the proacrosomal vesicle and the nucleus. The midpiece consists of a pair of centrioles, surrounded by a fibrous sheath and rings of simple and modified mitochondria. The centrioles sustain the axoneme that appears at the end of the midpiece. The axoneme extends throughout the principal piece of the flagellum with the 9 + 2 pattern, still surrounded by the fibrous sheath. In the endpiece, the axoneme continues, surrounded only by the plasma membrane. In the lumen of seminiferous tubules, immature spermatozoa retain abundant residual cytoplasm. 相似文献

Hatchling Sceloporus occidentalis from the same dam had more similar sprint speeds than did hatchlings from different dams. Families (e.g. siblings from the same dam) of hatchlings differ significantly in body size. However, family differences in sprint speed remain significant when the size differences are removed statistically. Genetic differences among the families of lizards may account for most of the family differences in speed, although environmental or maternal effects may also contribute to family differences in sprint speed. 相似文献

The iguanid lizard Sceloporus grammicus has a high level of karyotypic variability, and has often been cited as an example of chromosomal speciation. We examined a total of 2036 secondary spermatocytes from 30 S. grammicus males, and found that 16 of the 30 individuals (including a single lizard collected from a hybrid zone between two chromosome races) produced completely balanced spermatocytes. Fourteen of the 30 lizards (including both chromosomal heterozygotes and homozygotes) had relatively low (0.6% to 7.1%) levels of aneuploidy. Heterozygotes had a 1.1% increase over homozygotes in the number of aneuploid spermatocytes observed. The frequency of aneuploidy in S. grammicus may not be high enough to cause chromosomal speciation by any of the mechanisms that have been proposed for this complex. Most individuals showed balanced segregation of the autosomal trivalents, but nearly half of the lizards had a significant excess of spermatocytes with the X1 and X2 rather than the Y sex chromosomes. Five lizards had spermatocytes which had fission mutations not found in the somatic cells. As many as 5.9% of the spermatocytes in one individual had chromosomal mutations. This chromosomal mutation rate has important implications for chromosomal evolution in S. grammicus. 相似文献

The effect of the prostaglandin blocker indomethacin on arginine vasotocin-induced birth was examined. Gravid female, oviparous (Sceloporus undulatus ) and viviparous (Sceloporus jarrovi ) lizards were pretreated with saline or indomethacin, a potent blocker of PG synthesis. Pretreatment was followed by an intraperitoneal injection of AVT. Pretreatment with indomethacin significantly delayed the onset of AVT-induced oviposition in S. undulatus , whereas it had no effect on latency to birth in S. jarrovi . Female S. jarrovi treated with indomethacin, however, gave birth to only part of the total litter, whereas control females gave birth to complete litters. In viviparous females, an interaction of embryonic age with pretreatment was evident; females having more developed embryos decreased birth latency significantly and increased the percentage of parturition when compared with females that had embryos at earlier stages of development. Our data suggest that although exogenous AVT can stimulate oviposition or parturition, these events occur more rapidly and completely when prostaglandin synthesis is not inhibited. 相似文献

Aggressive behaviour in both sexes of Sceloporus virgatus, S. undulatus consobrinus, and S. u. tristichus were compared by introducing a conspecific to a resident lizard in the field. Males of S. u. consobrinus exhibited high intensity aggression more commonly than did males of the other forms. Of the females, S. u. tristichus showed the greatest propensity for aggressive behaviour; S. u. consobrinus showed the least. In males, degree of aggression was correlated positively with degree of sexual dichromatism. The high degree of aggression in male S. u. consobrinus may be selectively advantageous because of (1) low density increasing space between females, (2) low density reducing selection against a relatively high frequency of violent fighting, and (3) high predation favouring lizards that do not leave their sites upon intrusion of another male. High aggression in female S. u. tristichus may be selectively advantageous because of (1) higher density leading to reduced food supply and fewer egg-laying sites, and (2) lower predation reducing selection against mobility and fighting in females. 相似文献

A new Anolis species of the Alpha section from the north region of eastern Cuba (Holguín province) is described. It differs from all Cuban species of Anolis in its green coloration with greenish gray bands on body, legs and tail, in having subtriangular mental scales as well as in other details of color and scutellation. This new species is most closely related to A. isolepis but it can be distinguished from both, A. i. isolepis and A. i. altitudinalis, by its coloration and pattern, the larger body size, the presence of smooth ventral scales (similar in size to the dorsal scales) and by the absence of enlarged postcloacal scales in the male. 相似文献

Of 292 adult sagebrush lizards (Sceloporus graciosus) examined for the stomach nematode, Physaloptera retusa, 81 (28%) were infected. Attached nematodes caused erosive inflammatory foci in the stomach mucosa. Early lesions were U-shaped. Degenerating gastric glands occurred in the adjacent mucosa. Healed lesions were fibrous connective tissue scars; regenerating gastric glands occurred at the periphery. There were no externally visible signs of infection. 相似文献

A film loop apparatus was devised to test a possible social function of the display of Anolis nebulosus. Films of a displaying male were projected onto translucent screens at both ends of an enclosure. One film loop portrayed the display typical of the lizard's population, while the other loop projected an altered version of the basic display. Female A. nebulosus were introduced singly into the centre of the enclosure. They gave a graded response to the film loops; an increasing proportion of females approached the ‘normal’ displaying image as the film loops of altered displays contained a greater number of changes. The various experimental techniques previously used to study the function of lizard displays are reviewed. 相似文献

Africana telfordi n. sp. (Nematoda: Heterakidae) from the large intestine of the lizard Enyalioides heterolepsis collected in Panama is described and illustrated. Africana telfordi n. sp. represents the seventh species assigned to the genus and the second from the Neotropical Realm. It is distinguished from the other neotropical species, A. chabaudi, by the size and shape of the spicules. The spicules of A. telfordi are robust, analate, and 366-458 microm in length; those of A. chabaudi are narrow, alate, and 644-869 microm in length. 相似文献

We used the "morphology-performance-fitness" paradigm (Arnold, 1983) as our framework to investigate endocrine control of performance and fitness in Sceloporus undulatus (Eastern Fence Lizard). Focusing on males, we used the "natural experiments" of seasonal, sexual, and developmental variation in growth and in exercise endurance to identify testosterone and corticosterone as potential modulators of performance and related traits of interest. We followed with experimental manipulations of testosterone to investigate functional relationships, both in the laboratory and in the field. Further, we used focal observations and demographic studies, coupled with genetic determination of paternity, to test associations between performance and fitness, measured as reproductive success. We found that in males, endurance and plasma concentrations of testosterone and corticosterone are at their peaks in the spring breeding season, when lizards are most actively engaged in patrolling home ranges and in reproductive behavior. At that time, plasma concentrations of testosterone are correlated with body size; plasma concentrations of corticosterone and parameters of home range, including area and the number of overlapped females, are correlated with home-range overlap between males and females. During prereproductive development, males (but not females) experience a maturational increase in plasma testosterone. At about the same time, they become more active, expand their home ranges, and grow less quickly than do females, suggesting a trade-off in the allocation of energy, mediated by testosterone. Experimentally, testosterone has positive effects on fitness by stimulating endurance and reproductive activity and increasing home-range area, but it exacts costs in fitness by increasing ectoparasitism, decreasing growth, and decreasing survivorship. We found evidence of selection on body size, endurance, and home-range size (and thus access to potential mates). Despite having positive effects on performance traits, plasma concentrations of testosterone were not correlated with number of offspring sired by males. However, we found a strong correlation between the level of plasma corticosterone and the number of offspring sired. We also found evidence of size-assortative mating, indicating that for males, both the number and the size (and thus, fecundity) of their mates increase with body size. Our studies exemplify the power of natural history combined with experimental endocrine manipulations to identify hormonal regulators of performance and linkages to fitness. Furthermore, our results illustrate ecological and evolutionary significance of individual variation in endocrine traits. 相似文献

Summary At a site in western Nebraska, we studied the effects of supplemental food and water on growth, survival, and habitat utilization of hatchling iguanid lizards, Sceloporus undulatus. Hatchlings were randomly assigned to one of four experimental groups and received either (1) supplemental food only, (2) supplemental water only, (3) supplemental food and water, or (4) neither supplemental food nor water (control). Neither supplemental food nor supplemental water affected growth rate in length, growth rate in mass, or size-specific body mass (i.e. robustness) at the end of the treatment period. Over the 45 day treatment pierod, there were no significant differences among treatment groups in survival, home-range size, or habitat utilization. There were, however, significant differences in the index of activity. Hatchlings in the treatment groups receiving supplemental water were sighted more often than hatchlings in the control group. We conclude that, during our study, neither food nor water limited growth but that water limited activity. 相似文献

The anole fauna of the Lesser Antilles is depauperate in relation to that of the Greater Antilles, where complex communities characterized by adaptive specialization and convergent structure are present. Much of this adaptation is the result of changes in body size and shape, probably as a result of interspecific competition. Here we present data on variation in size and shape within a solitary Lesser Antillean species occupying an ecologically heterogenous island, and test the hypothesis that natural selection for varying environmental conditions is the cause of this variation. Univariate (analysis of variance), bivariate (analysis of covariance) and multivariate (multiple-group principal component analysis, canonical variate analysis) analysis showed that there is considerable geographic variation in size and shape within Anolis oculatus on Dominica. Partial Mantel tests rejected the null hypothesis of no association between size and shape and environmental variation. The possible proximate and evolutionary mechanisms responsible for these patterns are discussed. Despite these overall associations, a considerable amount of variation in shape appears to be unrelated to environmental variation. 相似文献

The ontogeny of antipredator behaviour of paradise fish was examined using a simple testing method. The results showed that the ability to recognize eyespots appears in larvae between 15 and 20 days old. At the same time, two horizontally placed eyespots produced the most pronounced effect on the behaviour of the larvae. Testing different inbred strains revealed that the ontogeny of antipredator behaviour is also under broad genetic control, as the response to a model predator was strong in one strain but weak in another. The results suggest that the recognition of eyespots coincides with larvae becoming more conspicuous to predators by the appearance of pigmentation and increasing level of swimming activity (exploration). 相似文献

The development of behaviour in four species of Sciurid rodents, having terrestrial, arboreal and gliding way of life, is quantified and compared. The studied species are: Spermophilus columbianus, Spermophilus lateralis, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus and Glaucomys sabrinus. For each behaviour pattern, the earliest and latest age of emergence is given along with a mean calculated for a series of young of each species. The development of locomotion, feeding, comfort, alertness, exploration, nest building and social behaviour and the principal events of physical development are analysed. The discussion shows that the specific differences in ontogenetic rate are controlled by a series of factors including predation pressure, hibernation and the specific complexity of locomotion. 相似文献

Summary We studied the reproductive ecology of a population of Sceloporus undulatus erythrocheilus near Walsenburg, CO during the summers of 1987–1990. Reproductive activity commences soon after emergence in early May and continues until the middle of July. Females mature in their second year following hatching at an age of 20–21 months and a size of 60–63 mm snout-vent length (SVL). Two clutches, averaging10.9 eggs, are produced per year. Larger females produce larger clutches with an increase of one egg per 3 mm SVL. Average SVL of females was 71 mm. Eggs are reasonably large (0.32 g) and relative clutch mass was the largest reported for the species (34% of body mass). A principal component analysis was used to examine relationships among reproductive characters in 12 populations of Sceloporus undulatus. The analysis suggested that patterns of reproduction in this wide-ranging species result from several factors reflecting both adaptive and phylogenetic sources of variation. 相似文献

We characterized steroidogenic properties of dispersed adrenocortical cells from field-active male and female eastern fence lizards (Sceloporus undulatus) to investigate whether alterations in cell function could, in part, explain seasonal variation in baseline and stress-induced plasma corticosterone (B). Lizards were collected during the breeding and postbreeding seasons and shortly prior to hibernation. Dispersed cells in vitro produced B, aldosterone (ALDO), and progesterone in response to 8-Br-cAMP, 25-(OH)cholesterol, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH; as little as 100 fM), and angiotensin II. Maximal progesterone, B, and ALDO responses to ACTH were roughly 1000%, 500%, and 100% greater than corresponding basal values. Angiotensin II was an effective steroidogenic stimulant but much less so than ACTH. Corticosteroid production exhibited considerable steroid-specific variation among seasons. Maximal ACTH-induced B production was lower in the postbreeding season than at either of the other two measurement points, essentially opposite to the pattern for ALDO. Males and females generally produced B at similar rates, but ALDO and progesterone showed numerous sex differences that usually covaried between the two steroids. Cellular sensitivity to 25-(OH)cholesterol and angiotensin II showed few sex differences or seasonal changes. In contrast, sensitivity to ACTH decreased markedly from the breeding to the postbreeding season in males, corresponding to the decrease in stress-responsiveness, and in both sexes was considerably lower prior to hibernation than during the breeding season. Under some conditions, plasma B may be limited by the production capacity of adrenocortical cells. In summary, seasonal variations in body condition, reproductive activity, and baseline and stress-induced plasma B may be attributed at least in part to alterations in adrenocortical cell steroidogenic function. 相似文献
