A survey of 21 lotic habitats from the Mt. St. Helens region, Washington, was conducted during late summer 1986, six years after the eruption. A total of 152 taxa was observed (94 diatoms, 36 chlorophytes, 19 cyanophytes, 2 xanthophytes, and I rhodophyte). Sampling sites were classified by TWINSPAN (two-way indicator species analysis) and ordinated by DECORANA (detrended correspondence analysis). In general, both techniques corresponded well with each other and grouped sites according to the intensity of disturbance that they experienced. Species richness and diversity values tended to be lowest at the most heavily disturbed sites. Chlorophyll a values ranged over two orders of magnitude and tended to be higher at sites sampled from small, low-discharge tributaries. Loowit Creek, a thermally influenced stream that begins within the volcanic crater, was dominated by thick mats of the cyanophyte Mastigocladus laminosus. A general comparison of the present study with one conducted just after Mt. St. Helens erupted suggests that successional processes are operating in these lotic algal communities.  相似文献

Despite the destruction and total rearrangement of much of the area north of Mt St. Helens, many different species of algae became established in the aquatic systems located in the blast zone within 3–4 months after the eruption of May 18, 1980. Initial sites of intense algal activity were found in benthic regions associated with warm springs and in the littoral and phytoplanktonic communities of some small lakes. In the summers of 1980–81, overall phytoplankton numbers and activity were low in the large lakes closest to the crater (e.g. Spirit Lake). However, diatoms, blue-green and green algal isolates from these lakes were obtained in laboratory cultures on a reduced inorganic medium used to enumerate metal and sulfur oxidizing bacteria. Species of Nodularia, Pseudanabaena, Anabaena, Oscillatoria, Nitzschia, Tribonema, Chlamydomonas, Chlorella, and microflagellates (predominantly cryptomonads) were among the more common forms found in preserved samples or isolated in cultures.  相似文献

  1. Understanding changes in macroinvertebrate communities is important because they play a large role in stream ecosystem functioning, and they are an important food resource for fish. Beaver-induced changes to stream morphology could alter macroinvertebrate communities, which in turn could affect food webs and ecosystem function. However, studies investigating the effects of North American beaver activities on macroinvertebrates are rare in the inter-mountain west, an area with high potential for beaver-assisted restoration.
  2. The aim of this study was to quantify differences in the macroinvertebrate community between unaltered segments of streams and within beaver ponds in north-eastern Utah, U.S.A. We assessed macroinvertebrate species richness, biomass, density, functional feeding group composition, mobility group composition, and macroinvertebrate habitat characteristics to test the hypothesis that macroinvertebrate communities will differ among habitat types (undammed stream segments and beaver ponds) in beaver-occupied streams.
  3. Beaver pond communities significantly differed from lotic reach communities in many ways. Beaver ponds were less diverse with 25% fewer species. Although there was variability among streams, in general, beaver ponds had 75% fewer individuals and 90% lower total macroinvertebrate biomass compared to lotic reaches.
  4. Regarding functional feeding groups, beaver ponds contained more engulfers, while lotic reaches contained more scrapers, filterers, and gatherers. For mobility groups, beaver ponds had more sprawlers, while lotic reaches had more clingers. Swimmers were also more prevalent in lotic reaches, although this is probably due to the abundance of Baetis within lotic reaches. More beaver pond taxa were classified as lentic-dwelling insects, while more lotic reach taxa were categorised as preferring lotic habitats.
  5. The creation of ponds by beavers fundamentally altered the macroinvertebrate community in north-eastern Utah streams. Such changes to stream macroinvertebrate communities suggest that recolonisation of beavers across North America may be altering stream functioning and food webs. Our study highlights the need to further investigate the effects of beaver recolonisation on stream communities.

We measured water quality, recorded physical habitat characteristics and collected aquatic invertebrates from 17 rockface seeps, five springs and five streams in a geologically diverse region of New Zealand's North Island to investigate factors influencing invertebrate distribution and community composition within and among these habitats. A total of 147 aquatic invertebrate taxa was found; 84 taxa occurred in seepage samples and 53% of these were found only in those habitats, including several new species. Where paired stream-seepage comparisons could be made, seeps contributed on average 35% of new species to the total species pool. The invertebrate faunas of all habitats were dominated taxonomically by Trichoptera and Diptera, but seepages were relatively depauperate in Ephemeroptera and richer in Coleoptera taxa compared to streams and springs. Seepage faunas were dominated numerically by Mollusca, and had lower percent abundance of aquatic insects (23% overall) compared to springs (77%) and streams (93%). Seepages underlain by different geologies generally had distinct water quality signatures, with seeps draining greywacke, sandstone and volcanic rocks grouping close to their receiving streams in a Principal Component Analysis. Seepage invertebrate community composition reflected underlying geology and associated differences in water chemistry, as well as seepage size and cover by moss. Incorporation of seepage habitats into conservation planning and aquatic ecosystem protection, and maintenance of their function and connectivity with lotic and groundwater ecosystems are important considerations for freshwater biodiversity management. Maintenance of riparian plant cover over seepages should help sustain supplies of organic matter, moss cover and shade, providing habitat complexity and low water temperatures.  相似文献

1. Perturbation pathways affecting interactions between feeding habitat, food supplies and diet of a lotic avian predator, blue duck (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos Gemlin), were tracked in a New Zealand river following substantial inputs of sediment from a volcanic eruption. Sediment impacts were separated temporally into two distinct phases: (i) deposition of fine ash from volcanic fall‐out, and (ii) pulsed releases of volcanic sand and gravel retained by an upstream dam. 2. Levels of interstitial suspendable inorganic sediments increased by several orders of magnitude following ash inputs to the river, but returned to low levels within 3 months. Flushing of volcanic sand and gravel retained by the dam resulted in sediment deposition upstream of a large island where coarse material lodged firmly between larger benthic substratum elements in blue duck feeding habitat. 3. Changes in algal biomass appeared to largely reflect seasonal and hydrological influences, but the percentage inorganic content of periphyton increased significantly during both posteruption phases. 4. Diversity and abundance of blue duck food supplies on boulders and on the riverbed declined following the eruption, whereas significant impacts on biomass were only detected in benthic habitats which were more susceptible to sediment deposition. However, percent composition of the benthic and boulder invertebrate food resources appeared largely unaffected by the eruption. 5. There was no apparent association between the eruption and the composition or electivity (E*) of blue duck diet, but there was a significant increase in the percent inorganic content of faeces, suggesting a reduction in the quality of food rations. 6. Changes in food quantity and quality associated with deposition of volcanic sediments were linked to an observed decline in blue duck population density and fecundity following the eruption. An interacting continuum of adaptive responses to perturbation intensity and impact duration is proposed for blue duck, and potentially other long‐lived, riverine birds, that enable them to cope with disturbances in highly variable and heterogenous lotic environments.  相似文献

Conspicuous growth of green and yellow-green algae developed in arid steppe communities in eastern Washington on the silt-sized ash from the 18 May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. In a veneer on the ash, cell numbers per gram dry ash of these aerial immigrants equaled or exceeded the highest reported values for terrestrial chlorophytes (108 cells · g?1 dry soil). Such pronounced growth was restricted largely to three microsites (under the canopy of Artemisia tridentata, along the runways of the vole, Microtus montanus, and surrounding emergent agarics), apparently in response to water-holding properties of the ash, localized nutrient input and possible reduction of predation by nematodes. Highest algal counts were in Microtus runways where daily water and urea-N input per adult animal may be 8 mL and 23 mg, respectively. Cyanophytes, commonly considered early colonizers of volcanic ash, were extremely rare. The role of blue-green algae in succession on volcanic materials may be more restricted geographically than previously recognized.  相似文献

Emergent aquatic insects can provide inputs to terrestrial ecosystems near lentic and lotic waterbodies, producing ecosystem linkages at the aquatic–terrestrial interface. Although aquatic insect emergence has been examined for individual sites, the magnitude and spatial distribution of this phenomenon has not been examined at regional spatial scales. Here, we characterize this cross-habitat linkage for the state of Wisconsin, USA (169,639 km2). We combined GIS hydrological data with empirical data and predictive models of aquatic insect production to estimate annual aquatic emergence for the state of Wisconsin. Total emergence (lentic + lotic) was estimated to be about 6,800 metric tons of C y?1. Lentic systems comprised 79% of total estimated insect emergence, primarily due to the large amount of lake surface area relative to streams. This is due to both basic ecosystem geometry and the overall abundance of lakes in Wisconsin. Spatial variation was high: insect emergence in southwestern Wisconsin was dominated by streams, whereas for most of the rest of the state insect emergence was dominated by lakes. Lentic inputs to land were highly concentrated (relative to lotic inputs) because lakes have a high ratio of surface area to buffer area. Although less concentrated, the spatial extent of lotic influence was greater: statewide, four times more land area fell within the 100 m buffer zones of streams compared to lakes. Large waterbodies (almost all of which were lakes) were hotspots of insect emergence and input to land. Aquatic insect inputs exceed estimated terrestrial secondary production in 13% of buffer area, and by a factor of 100 or more adjacent to large lakes (>50,000 ha). The model sensitivity analysis showed that the simplifying assumptions and sources of potential error in the input variables had a minor impact on the overall results.  相似文献

This paper describes the study of the application of a Hirst-type impact volumetric sampler (IVS) in the sampling of volcanic ash continuously emitted by Mt. Etna. This methodology is commonly used for measuring the atmospheric concentration of airborne pollen grains and fungal spores. This study was undertaken between April 2003 and January 2005, when a series of ash emissions occurred; moreover, during this period, namely on 7 September 2004, there was an eruption from various fractures located in the higher eastern flank of the volcano. The airborne volcanic ashes involving the lower south-eastern flank of Mt. Etna were monitored by means of an IVS stationed in the town of Acireale. In some people volcanic ash can trigger predisposing factors linked with allergens, and an allergic response may occur. After exposure, immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies are produced and released into the bloodstream and they can, therefore, be identified by haematological analysis. In this study we compared the number of ash events recorded by our IVS and the number of total immunoglobulin E (IgE) values found in the population living on or near this volcano sector. A correlation was established between air pollution from volcanic ash and IgE values over a period of 22 months.  相似文献

Volcanically active islands abound in the tropical Pacific and harbor complex coral communities. Whereas lava streams and deep ash deposits are well-known to devastate coral communities through burial and smothering, little is known about the effect of moderate amounts of small particulate ash deposits on reef communities. Volcanic ash contains a diversity of chemical compounds that can induce nutrient enrichments triggering changes in benthic composition. Two independently collected data sets on the marine benthos of the pristine and remote reefs around Pagan Island, Northern Mariana Islands, reveal a sudden critical transition to cyanobacteria-dominated communities in 2009–2010, which coincides with a period of continuous volcanic ash eruptions. Concurrently, localized outbreaks of the coral-killing cyanobacteriosponge Terpios hoshinota displayed a remarkable symbiosis with filamentous cyanobacteria, which supported the rapid overgrowth of massive coral colonies and allowed the sponge to colonize substrate types from which it has not been documented before. The chemical composition of tephra from Pagan indicates that the outbreak of nuisance species on its reefs might represent an early succession stage of iron enrichment (a.k.a. “black reefs”) similar to that caused by anthropogenic debris like ship wrecks or natural events like particulate deposition from wildfire smoke plumes or desert dust storms. Once Pagan''s volcanic activity ceased in 2011, the cyanobacterial bloom disappeared. Another group of well-known nuisance algae in the tropical Pacific, the pelagophytes, did not reach bloom densities during this period of ash eruptions but new species records for the Northern Mariana Islands were documented. These field observations indicate that the study of population dynamics of pristine coral communities can advance our understanding of the resilience of tropical reef systems to natural and anthropogenic disturbances.  相似文献

In southwestern British Columbia (BC, Canada) and within a relatively small geographic area, lotic environments range from streams in coastal rainforests, to streams in arid continental grasslands, to very large rivers. Little is known about the invertebrate communities in large rivers in general, or in the streams of continental BC. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the benthic invertebrate community structure changes spatially between small coastal and small interior streams; between small streams versus large rivers; and whether changes in the benthic community are related to the environmental conditions. Kicknet samples and environmental data were collected from three coastal streams, three continental streams and two large rivers (discharge of 781 and 3620 m3/s, respectively). The large river sites had low invertebrate abundance, species richness and diversity, relative to the small streams. The coastal streams had the highest species richness and the continental streams had the highest invertebrate abundance. A number of taxa were specific to each class of stream. Invertebrate abundance decreased with river size, and increased with elevation, pH, conductivity, alkalinity, NO2NO3-N, total Kejldahl nitrogen and percent carbon in suspended solids.  相似文献

The heterogeneous nature of lotic habitats plays an important role in the complex ecological and evolutionary processes that structure the microbial communities within them. Due to such complexity, our understanding of lotic microbial ecology still lacks conceptual frameworks for the ecological processes that shape these communities. We explored how bacterial community composition and underlying ecological assembly processes differ between lotic habitats by examining community composition and inferring community assembly processes across four major habitat types (free-living, particle-associated, biofilm on benthic stones and rocks, and sediment). This was conducted at 12 river sites from headwater streams to the main river in the River Thames, UK. Our results indicate that there are distinct differences in the bacterial communities between four major habitat types, with contrasting ecological processes shaping their community assembly processes. While the mobile free-living and particle-associated communities were consistently less diverse than the fixed sediment and biofilm communities, the latter two communities displayed higher homogeneity across the sampling sites. This indicates that the relative influence of deterministic environmental filtering is elevated in sediment and biofilm communities compared with free-living and particle-associated communities, where stochastic processes play a larger role.  相似文献

Mediterranean climate ecosystems are among the most fire-prone in the world; however, little is known about the effects of fire on mediterranean streams (med-streams). Fire impacts on med-streams are associated with increased runoff and erosion from severely burned landscapes during storms, particularly the first intense rains. Increased inputs of water, solutes, nutrients, sediment, organic matter, and ash to streams after fires are usually observed for months to up to 4 years. Return to pre-fire conditions is associated with vegetation recovery. Benthic algae, invertebrates, and fish are reduced to low levels by scouring floods after wildfire. If riparian zones are burned, benthic algae increase, and invertebrate communities become dominated by r-strategist species. Fishes are eradicated from reaches affected by intense wildfire and often do not re-colonize quickly because of downstream barriers. In general, med-stream communities appear to be more resilient to fire compared to streams in other ecosystems because of the rapid recovery of mediterranean upland and riparian vegetation and geomorphological conditions (1–4 years in med-streams vs 5–10 years in non-med streams). However, drought or mass sediment movements after fire can prolong fire effects. Studies of the long-term effects of fire and the consequences of fire management practices are still needed.  相似文献

Shallow‐water coral reef ecosystems, particularly those already impaired by anthropogenic pressures, may be highly sensitive to disturbances from natural catastrophic events, such as volcanic eruptions. Explosive volcanic eruptions expel large quantities of silicate ash particles into the atmosphere, which can disperse across millions of square kilometres and deposit into coral reef ecosystems. Following heavy ash deposition, mass mortality of reef biota is expected, but little is known about the recovery of post‐burial reef ecosystems. Reef regeneration depends partly upon the capacity of the ash deposit to be colonised by waterborne bacterial communities and may be influenced to an unknown extent by the physiochemical properties of the ash substrate itself. To determine the potential for volcanic ash to support pioneer bacterial colonisation, we exposed five well‐characterised volcanic and coral reef substrates to a marine aquarium under low light conditions for 3 months: volcanic ash, synthetic volcanic glass, carbonate reef sand, calcite sand and quartz sand. Multivariate statistical analysis of Automated Ribosomal Intergenic Spacer Analysis (ARISA) fingerprinting data demonstrates clear segregation of volcanic substrates from the quartz and coral reef substrates over 3 months of bacterial colonisation. Overall bacterial diversity showed shared and substrate‐specific bacterial communities; however, the volcanic ash substrate supported the most diverse bacterial community. These data suggest a significant influence of substrate properties (composition, granulometry and colour) on bacterial settlement. Our findings provide first insights into physicochemical controls on pioneer bacterial colonisation of volcanic ash and highlight the potential for volcanic ash deposits to support bacterial diversity in the aftermath of reef burial, on timescales that could permit cascading effects on larval settlement.  相似文献

1. Relationships between fish and their habitat over whole geographic regions, which are evident from studies of many streams and species, can improve understanding of lotic communities and provide reliable management tools. Nevertheless, most habitat preference studies have been based on single sites, and confined to small streams and to game species.
2. Regional habitat preference models, based on local velocity, depth and roughness, were developed for twenty-four species and their size classes commonly found in large European streams. Fish surveys were conducted in six large streams in southern France over an 8-year period. To limit the influences of habitat variables other than those studied, we estimated fish preferences within each survey and averaged this information across surveys. Preferences were fitted with confidence intervals and their sensitivity to field uncertainty was evaluated.
3. Most species and size classes had significant preferences for local habitat conditions which were consistent across the region. Habitat preferences predominant in the region overall were not always observed at any one site, but habitat conditions preferred on average in the region were never actually avoided locally. These results support the use of regional preference models for fish and the development of similar models for other lotic groups whose sensitivity to local habitat conditions has been reported elsewhere.  相似文献

The volcanic Sulphur Springs, St. Lucia, present an extreme environment due to high temperatures, low pH values, and high concentrations of sulfate and boron. St. Lucia offers some unique geochemical characteristics that may shape the microbial communities within the Sulphur Springs area. We chose six pools representing a range of geochemical characteristics for detailed microbial community analyses. Chemical concentrations varied greatly between sites. Microbial diversity was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene clone library analyses. With the exception of one pool with relatively low concentrations of dissolved ions, microbial diversity was very low, with Aquificales sequences dominating bacterial communities at most pools. The archaeal component of all pools was almost exclusively Acidianus spp. and did not vary between sites with different chemical characteristics. In the pool with the highest boron and sulfate concentrations, only archaeal sequences were detected. Compared with other sulfur springs such as those at Yellowstone, the microbial diversity at St. Lucia is very different, but it is similar to that at the nearby Lesser Antilles island of Montserrat. While high elemental concentrations seem to be related to differences in bacterial diversity here, similarities with other Lesser Antilles sites suggest that there may be a biogeographical component as well.  相似文献

The response of aquatic macroinvertebrate communities to flow permanence within limestone springs and headwater streams was examined across the English Peak District. At the regional scale, macroinvertebrate communities of perennial and intermittent springs displayed significant differences in the number of taxa, macroinvertebrate community abundance, diversity indices (Shannon and Simpson indices) and the Berger–Parker dominance index at intermediate discharge. However, no significant difference was recorded between intermittent and perennial sites at high discharge or when all sampling occasions were pooled. At the catchment scale, the number of taxa, community abundance and Bray–Curtis similarity coefficients within the River Lathkill differed significantly between intermittent springs and other habitats. At both the regional and catchment scale the macroinvertebrate communities of intermittent springs were characterised by a small number of taxa displaying life cycle adaptations to intermittent aquatic habitats, particularly Trichoptera.  相似文献

Volcanic eruptions have important effects on terrestrial ecosystems. The biotic effects of volcanic ash on insect populations vary from widespread and catastrophic to subtle and localized. Volcanic eruptions may increase insect mortality through the effects of the ash plume, and these vary by taxon or specific biological features. The PuyehueCordon Caulle Volcanic Complex is the most recent eruption in Patagonia. Here we explore and describe the effects of the eruption of this volcanic complex on invasive Vespula spp. populations. These wasps are very abundant social hymenoptera that have recently invaded Patagonia. We placed baited traps following the gradient of deposited ash, and revisited them once a week during February to April. No wasps were caught where ash deposition levels exceeded 3.0 cm. The number of wasps caught in sites with minimal ash deposits was similar to that of previous years. In locations where ash layers are intermediate, a few wasps were observed, but only during the peak of wasp abundance. We show that Vespula spp. populations were severely affected by the ash deposition and plume, caused by this eruption. These results show catastrophic effects of ash deposition over a large area, even at great distances from the eruption epicenter. We conclude that wasp mortality explained by the volcanic eruption may reach distant areas, and cause local extinction. In areas where active volcanoes are common, invasive insects may encounter an additional obstacle in their invasion success.  相似文献

Terrestrial mosses and lichens in the steppe of Washington were buried under volcanic ash from the 18 May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Unlike adult vascular plants in these communities, these cryptogams died following the deposition of silt-size ash. Death within as little as four months was demonstrated by anatomical deterioration and these organisms' inability to fix CO2, to fluoresce in IR radiation, and to absorb vital stains. Although cryptogams in the steppe have probably been destroyed repeatedly by ash falls during the Holocene, this recent destruction is the first since the arrival of alien plants in the nineteenth century. Death of cryptogams may allow the initiation of further colonization by alien plants because a cryptogamic crust forms a barrier to seedling establishment.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the primary production rates of phytolithic communities found in the major different habitats of streams and determine the effects of physical and chemical parameters associated with each habitat on periphyton community spatial structure. The project was designed to study natural, intact communities within stream systems.A comparative analysis was made of phytolithic communities found in Camel Hump and Husky Branch streams in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Camel Hump flows through virgin forest area and Husky Branch flows through an area logged approximately 60 y ago. The effects of logging on Husky Branch stream and the surrounding watershed are discussed.Seasonal data were collected from July, 1981 through May, 1982 from fast flow, slow flow and pool areas within each stream. An incubation chamber designed for use in lotic systems was used for in situ measurements of 14C uptake. Rock samples collected at each site were used as substrates for community structure observations utilizing a scanning electron microscope.The algal communities of Camel Hump and Husky Branch streams were found to be predominantly composed of diatoms. The dominant genera in the fast, slow and pool areas included Achnanthes, Eunotia, Meridion, Navicula and Gomphonema. Fast flow areas were dominated by diatom species growing in a prostrate position. Slow flow areas were more densely populated by diatoms than the fast flow areas. Diatoms in the slow flow areas appeared mainly in prostrate position with a few stalked forms present. Pool area communities were less densely packed than slow flow areas and contained stalked and chain formations of diatoms.Results indicate that the physical and chemical parameters associated with each habitat affect the primary production rates and community structure found at the experimental sites. Measurements of carbon assimilation and chlorophyll a concentration were significantly greater in habitats of higher current velocity and light availability. Cell densities tend to increase with a decrease in current velocity. Habitats of high density showed a decrease in diversity and evenness. Correlations between productivity in the various habitats of each stream and other parameters measured in the study are discussed.  相似文献
