Avian vocalizations are common examples of the complex signals used by animals to negotiate during agonistic interactions. In this study, we used two playback experiments to identify agonistic signals in a songbird species with several acoustically complex songs and calls, the veery. In the first experiment, we compared veery singing behavior in response to simulated territorial intrusions including playback of three variations of veery song: 1) song alone as a control, 2) songs with added whisper calls, and 3) songs with introductory notes removed. In the second experiment, we used multimodal stimuli including songs, whisper calls and songs with introductory notes removed, along with a robotic veery mount. Focal males readily responded to all of the playback stimuli, approached the speaker and/or robotic mount, and vocalized. Male veeries gave more whisper calls, and sang more songs without the introductory note in response to all types of playback. However, veeries responded similarly to all types of stimuli presented, and they failed to physically attack the robotic mount. These results indicate that rival veeries use two different types of novel vocalizations: whisper calls and songs lacking the introductory note as agonistic signals, but do not allow us to discern the specific functions of these two vocalizations.  相似文献

To investigate which song features are used for discrimination by the veery (Catharus fuscescens), we synthesized songs by computer and manipulated or deleted various features. These songs were then played to territorial males in their natural habitat. Differences in response to these stimuli indicated the relative importance of the manipulated song components. We found that certain features must be maintained in order to elicit a territorial response similar to that elicited by the natural song. These features were the frequency changes between and within syllables, the dominant higher frequency band (or voice), the intra-syllable syntax, and the rapid repetitive amplitude and frequency modulations. Manipulations of inter-syllable syntax independent of frequency changes between syllables, broad changes in amplitude, and the lower frequency band, did not have a significant effect on response. We thus concluded that they are not essential as cues for discrimination or species identification. Re-recordings of songs broadcast along transects indicate that song components used in encoding species identity are those which transmit well across veery territories.  相似文献

Many terrestrial ecosystems are characterized by intermittent production of abundant resources for consumers, termed pulsed resources. The impact of resource pulses on populations downwind of the initial pulse are only beginning to be characterized, while the relationship between the frequencies of pulses and the long‐term growth rate of affected species is unknown. I monitored the reproductive success of veeries (Catharus fuscescens) breeding in oak‐dominated forest in southeastern New York State from 1998 to 2002. During this time veeries experienced high interannual variability in growth rates as a consequence of trophic cascades stemming from pulsed production of acorns. Rodent populations that benefited from acorns also depredated veery nests, while raptors that increased in response to rodent outbreaks are major predators on adult and juvenile birds. Veeries may recoup losses following low to moderate acorn crops that lead to rodent population declines. Thus, veeries fluctuate between years of positive and negative growth rate, however, long‐term population trends, and thus true source‐sink designation, cannot be made until the frequency of various year types is characterized. I simulated long‐term growth rates using reproductive parameters estimated from field studies and survivorship data from the literature. Simulations suggest that variability in the frequency of masting events in oaks can lead to ~10% fluctuation in long‐term growth rates in veeries. These studies suggest that temporal variability in masting dynamics has the potential to substantially influence songbird population trends. Furthermore, spatial variability in masting characteristics (e.g. the frequency of masting events and/or the size of seed crops) may greatly contribute to regional differences in songbird population trends. Because even less is known about the relationship between sizes of acorn crops and songbird populations, the influence of pulses in seed production on songbird population dynamics is likely to be underestimated.  相似文献

The research reported here was designed to study the individual peculiarities of birds in solving a problem. Goldfinches Carduelis carduelis and siskins C. spinus were tested with the string‐pulling task: sitting on a perch from which a small food container is suspended by a string the test bird had to lift the container, using the bill to pull the string stepwise up and a foot to hold it, and repeat that until they could reach the food. Fifty‐two goldfinches and 29 siskins raised under controlled conditions were tested individually. Three groups became apparent: ‘inventors’ (23% of goldfinches; 62% of siskins) solved the problem by themselves; ‘imitators’ (25% of goldfinches; 10% of siskins) succeeded after seeing a performing conspecific; ‘duffers’ (52% of goldfinches, 28% of siskins) did not succeed either way. The species – but not the sexes – differed significantly in string‐pulling ability. The results of our experiments indicate that string pulling is an acquired combination of innate behaviour elements. An individual's string‐pulling competence may depend on prior experience of handling branchlets, on trial‐and‐error learning and on social learning (emulation). However, some individuals succeeded without these facilitating factors, while others did not succeed at all despite all of them present. Although functionally and motivationally related to feeding, the learned string pulling is often shown as a playful activity without an obvious reward.  相似文献

African forest bulbuls of the genus Bleda are usually placed into three separate species: B. syndactyla and B. eximia distributed both in Upper and Lower Guinea forest blocks, and B. canicapilla restricted to the Upper Guinean one. Acoustic data lead to question traditional morphologically-based species limits in this genus. Colouration patterns and measurements, particularly bill shape and length, wing and tail lengths, are reconsidered for all taxa. Multivariate (discriminant functions) analyses lead to separate nominate B. eximia as an Upper Guinean species distinct from Lower Guinean B. notata. Furthermore B. eximia appears closer to B. syndactyla than to the other two species. Acoustically, by the physical traits of their calls and songs as well as the behaviour associated with their production, B. eximia and B. syndactyla are very close and quite different from B. canicapilla and B. notata which constitute another pair of very close species. Obviously, in the frame of the biological species concept, the four taxa branched in two groups from a common ancestor, B. eximia and B. syndactyla represent a species-pair whereas B. notata and B. canicapilla are allospecies of a single superspecies. Allopatric speciation patterns based on alternate fragmentations and unitings of forests can be drawn from present knowledge of African forest history in relation to Pleistocene-Holocene events. However, a brief review of recent data on interspecific genetic differentiation in birds suggests an important discrepancy between biogeographical and molecular time calibrations. The development of molecular studies appears as a priority for the understanding of the evolution of African tropical forests birds.  相似文献

Members of four sympatric species of Eupomacentrus carry out reproductive activities at the same time of the year and produce similar pulsed courtship sounds. Such sounds are known to facilitate courtship among conspecifics. Consequently, members of the four species in the field and in the laboratory were tested with the various sounds to determine if they could distinguish their own species sounds from those produced by congeners. The differential responses clearly demonstrate species specific recognition by sound and indicate that the pulse interval and the number of pulses per sound are the important parameters for this recognition.  相似文献

Female red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) were tested for response to songs of male red-winged blackbirds differing in sound-pressure level (SPL) of playback. Subjects gave significantly more copulation-solicitation displays in response to playback of songs at 85 dB SPL than to playback of the same songs at 72 dB SPL. The strength of the preference, as judged by the ratio of response to high and low SPL playback (1.15:1), was lower than that of preferences for high SPL shown by insects and anurans. Female red-winged blackbirds responded preferentially to a conspecific song relative to a heterospecific imitation, even when the imitation was presented at an SPL 13 dB higher than that of the conspecific song. By contrast, female redwings did not maintain a preference for multiple conspecific song types over single types when the single song types were presented at the higher SPL. These results are compatible with Klump & Gerhardt's (1987) suggestion that the intensity independence of female preferences varies with the relative benefit females obtain from each preference.  相似文献

The avifauna of Indonesia is one of the richest in the world but the taxonomic status of many species remains poorly documented. The sole species of scops owl known from Lombok has long been assigned to the widespread Moluccan Scops Owl Otus magicus on the basis of superficial similarities in morphology. Field work in 2003 has shown that the territorial song of the scops owls inhabiting the foothills of Gunung Rinjani differs dramatically from that of O. magicus and is more similar to those of Rufescent Scops Owl O. rufescens and Singapore Scops Owl O. cnephaeus. Detailed comparisons of sound recordings and museum specimens with those of other scops owls in Wallacea and the Indo-Malayan region have confirmed the distinctiveness of the Lombok population. We describe Otus jolandae as a new species, the Rinjani Scops Owl. It is locally common at elevations from 25–1350 m. and occurs within Gunung Rinjani National Park. The new species is known from seven specimens collected by Alfred Everett in 1896. Otus jolandae represents the first endemic bird species from Lombok.  相似文献

Male red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) respond to playback of conspecific song on their territories with the song spread, a graded aggressive display in which males extend their wings to expose their red epaulets while singing. We show that the intensity of song spread display declines with repeated presentation of one song type, and recovers when song types are switched. Recovery is greater for switches between song types that are acoustically dissimilar than for switches between song types that are acoustically similar. Recovery is no different for switches between two song types taken from the repertoires of different males than for switches between song types recorded from the same male. Analysis of acoustic features also indicates that song types recorded from different males are not more dissimilar than are song types from the same male. Our results do not support the idea that repertoires of red-winged blackbirds are composed of similar song types in order to facilitate individual recognition. Rather, repertoires may be constructed of dissimilar song types, so as to help maintain the response of listeners despite habituation.  相似文献

Cytotaxonomic study in the order Falconiformes (Aves)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Karyotypes of six species of birds of the order Falconiformes are presented. The chromosomes of three of these, Neophron percnopterus, Butastur teesa (family Accipitridae) and Falco chicquera (family Falconidae) are described for the first time. The systematic position of these birds are discussed in relation to the karyological characters of other diurnal birds of prey.  相似文献

Regulation of numbers in the Great tit (Aves: Passeriformes)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
John R.  Krebs 《Journal of Zoology》1970,162(3):317-333
The census data of the Great tit collected by Perrins (1965) and others in Marley Wood near Oxford are analysed for density-dependence. Clutch size and hatching success are density-dependent and sufficiently so to regulate the population at the observed level (assuming that there is in addition a fairly large density-independent mortality). There may also be some weak density-dependent mortality outside the breeding season. The density-dependent variations in clutch size are probably in the main due to shortage of available food and density-dependent hatching failure is caused by predation. Territorial behaviour has been shown experimentally to determine breeding density, and may produce a density-dependent effect outside the breeding season. These three factors are responsible for regulation of the Great tit population in Marley Wood.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of members of Cotingidae were investigated using >2100 bp of sequence data from two nuclear introns (myoglobin intron 2 and G3PDH intron 11) and one protein-coding mitochondrial gene (cytochrome b). Strong support was found for a monophyletic clade including 23 traditional cotingid genera, corresponding to the Cotingidae sensu [Remsen, J.V. Jr., Jaramillo, A., Nores, M., Pacheco, J.F., Robbins, M.B., Schulenberg, T.S., Stiles, F.G., da Silva, J.M.C., Stotz, D.F., Zimmer, K.J., 2005. Version 2005-11-15. A classification of the bird species of South America. American Ornithologists' Union. ]. Neither Oxyruncus nor any of the genera in Tityrinae sensu [Prum, R.O, Lanyon, W.E., 1989. Monophyly and phylogeny of the Schiffornis group (Tyrannoidea). Condor 91, 444-461.] are members of Cotingidae. Within Cotingidae a polytomy of four well-supported clades was recovered: (1) the fruiteaters Pipreola and Ampelioides; (2) the Ampelion group, including Phytotoma; (3) Rupicola and Phoenicircus; and (4) the 'core cotingas' consisting of the remainder of the Cotingas (e.g. fruitcrows, Cotinga, Procnias, Lipaugus, and Carpodectes), with Snowornis in a basal position. The separation of Snowornis from Lipaugus [Prum, R.O, Lanyon, W.E., 1989. Monophyly and phylogeny of the Schiffornis group (Tyrannoidea). Condor 91, 444-461.] was strongly supported, as were the close relationships between Gymnoderus and Conioptilon, and between Tijuca and Lipaugus. However, basal relationships among 'core cotinga' clades were not resolved.  相似文献

Studies on histomorphometrical changes in different segments (infundibulum, magnum, isthmus, shell gland and vagina) of oviduct of mallard, Anas platyrhynchos during active and quiescent phases of the reproductive cycle have been made. The absolute and per cent length and width of each segment showed a marked change. The magnum showed an increase of 280 per cent. Of all the histological parameters studied the number and height of mucosal folds and mucosal epithelium showed more marked increase in all segments of oviduct. The size of tubular glands and frequency of ciliated and secretory cells were studied in relation to oviductal activity.  相似文献

We explore the phylogenetic relationships of fantails (Aves: Rhipiduridae) using molecular characters derived from two nuclear introns and two mitochondrial genes. Our results indicate that Rhipidura hypoxantha is not a true fantail, but rather a member of the Stenostiridae clade that is morphologically and behaviourally convergent with fantails. Within the true Rhipiduridae, we identified six distinct clades; however, phylogenetic relationships among these groups were unresolved. The only well-supported sister relationship was between members of the grey and the rufous fantail complexes. Clades recovered through our model-based phylogenetic analyses generally correspond to previously proposed fantail complexes based on morphological characters. The phylogenetic position of R. atra and R. diluta remain unclear, as sister relationships varied between analyses for the prior whereas the latter was placed as sister to the New Guinea thicket fantails, R. leucothorax and R. threnothorax ; yet significant node support was not recovered for either taxa. Biogeographically, fantails appear to have radiated rapidly and the six clades are not geographically restricted, but instead span South-east Asia, New Guinea, Australia and Pacific Islands.  相似文献

Gene trees will often differ from the true species history, the species tree, as a result of processes such as incomplete lineage sorting. New methods such as Bayesian Estimation of the Species Tree (BEST) use the multispecies coalescent to model lineage sorting, and directly infer the species tree from multilocus DNA sequence data. The Sulidae (Aves: Pelecaniformes) is a family of ten booby and gannet species with a global distribution. We sequenced five nuclear intron loci and one mitochondrial locus to estimate a species tree for the Sulidae using both BEST and by concatenating nuclear loci. We also used fossil calibrated strict and relaxed molecular clocks in BEAST to estimate divergence times for major nodes in the sulid phylogeny. Individual gene trees showed little phylogenetic conflict but varied in resolution. With the exception of the mitochondrial gene tree, no gene tree was completely resolved. On the other hand, both the BEST and concatenated species trees were highly resolved, strongly supported, and topologically consistent with each other. The three sulid genera (Morus, Sula, Papasula) were monophyletic and the relationships within genera were mostly consistent with both a previously estimated mtDNA gene tree and the mtDNA gene tree estimated here. However, our species trees conflicted with the mtDNA gene trees in the relationships among the three genera. Most notably, we find that the endemic and endangered Abbott's booby (Papasula abbotti) is likely basal to all other members of the Sulidae and diverged from them approximately 22 million years ago.  相似文献

Many migratory songbirds follow circuitous migratory routes instead of taking the shortest path between overwintering and breeding areas. Here, we study the migration patterns in Swainson's thrush (Catharus ustulatus), a neartic-neotropical migrant songbird, using molecular genetic approaches. This species is presently separated into genetically distinct coastal and continental populations that diverged during the Late Pleistocene (as indicated by molecular dating), yet appear to have retained ancestral patterns of migration. Low nucleotide diversity, a star-like haplotype phylogeny and unimodal mismatch distributions all support the hypothesis that both the coastal and the continental populations have undergone recent demographic expansions. Nearctic-neotropical banding and genetic data show nearly complete segregation of migratory routes and of overwintering locations: coastal populations migrate along the Pacific Coast to overwintering sites in Central America and Mexico, whereas continental populations migrate along an eastern route to overwintering sites in Panama and South America. Nearctic-neotropical banding data also show that continental birds north, northwest and east of this migratory divide fly thousands of miles east before turning south. We conclude that circuitous migration in the Swainson's thrush is an artefact of a Late Pleistocene range expansion.  相似文献

We present an analysis of song type differences between populations of seven forest weaver (Ploceus bicolor) subspecies. Phonology and syntax of the melodious parts of song types differ between these populations to the same extent as they differ between population-specific dialects within a subspecies. Phonological and syntactical song features are socially transmitted; they can be transmitted even between representatives of taxonomically different subspecies. The Harsh Call, a complex element embedded in the melody, is of similar structure in populations of four South African subspecies, but shows markedly different characteristics in populations of the subspecies from Kenya and Cameroon. Song differences between populations are suggested to result from cultural drift and geographic isolation. A correspondence between genetically determined morphological structures on the one hand and socially transmitted song structure on the other seems to be a coincidence due to geographic separation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if common poorwills ( Phalaenoptilus nuttallii ) resist entering torpor during the breeding season. During the summers of 1991 and 1992, we studied poorwills in the Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan, Canada, near the northern limit of their distribution. Since poorwills are monogamous and share incubating and brooding responsibilities, we predicted that the non-incubating or non-brooding bird would enter torpor when stressed energetically (e.g. on cold and/or wet nights). Individuals carrying temperature-sensitive radio transmitters entered torpor significantly less often during the breeding season (two of 195 bird nights) than the non-breeding season (27 of 44 bird nights). During the breeding season we found no birds involved in an active nesting attempt in torpor. We conclude that reproduction constrains the use of torpor by adult birds, but why non-incubating and non-breeding birds did not enter remains unclear.  相似文献
