Productivity studies were carried out from September, 1985 to August, 1987 in two mangrove stands, i.e. estuarine and island fringing, in Dutch bay, a lagoon situated on the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. Net above-ground primary productivity was measured by monitoring litterfall and above-ground biomass increment. The average annual rate of litterfall in the estuarine and island-fringing mangrove stands are 588.14 g m–2 (approximately 6 t ha–1) and 407.33 g m–2 (approximately 4 t ha–1) respectively. The average annual rates of above ground woody growth are 614.74 g m–2 (approximately 6 t ha–1) in the estuarine stands and 286.8 g m–2 (approximately 3 t ha–1) in the island-fringing mangrove stands. Hence estuarine mangrove stands record a higher annual rate of above-ground net primary production (NPP; 1207.88 g m–2 or approximately 12 t ha–1) than the fringing mangrove stands (694.22 g m–2); approximately 7 t ha–1). The annual rate of NPP in the water front zones of the stands (1300.47 g m–2 in the estuarine stands and 874.56 g m–2 in the fringing stands) are greater than those in the back-mangrove zones (115.28 g m–2 in the estuarine stands and 513.88 g m–2 in the island-fringing stands). These variations may be attributed to the differences in tidal flushing and influence of freshwater in the two localities.  相似文献

Functionality of restored mangroves: A review   总被引:11,自引:9,他引:2
Widespread mangrove degradation coupled with the increasing awareness of the importance of these coastal forests have spurred many attempts to restore mangroves but without concomitant assessment of recovery (or otherwise) at the ecosystem level in many areas. This paper reviews literature on the recovery of restored mangrove ecosystems using relevant functional indicators. While stand structure in mangrove stands is dependent on age, site conditions and silvicultural management, published data indicates that stem densities are higher in restored mangroves than comparable natural stands; the converse is true for basal area. Biomass increment rates have been found to be higher in younger stands than older stands (e.g. 12 t ha−1 year−1 for a 12 years plantation compared to 5.1 t ha−1 year−1 for a 80-year-old plantation). Disparities in patterns of tree species recruitment into the restored stands have been observed with some stands having linear recruitment rates with time (hence enhancing stand complexity), while some older stands completely lacked the understorey. Biodiversity assessments suggest that some fauna species are more responsive to mangrove degradation (e.g. herbivorous crabs and mollusks in general), and thus mangrove restoration encourages the return of such species, in some cases to levels equivalent to those in comparable natural stands. The paper finally recommends various mangrove restoration pathways in a functional framework dependent on site conditions and emphasizes community involvement and ecosystem level monitoring as integral components of restoration projects.  相似文献

Biomass and production of two stands with Quercus variabilis Bl. as the dominant species (stands 1 and 3) and one with Q. mongolica Fisch. as the dominant species (stand 2) were investigated in southern Korea. Stands 1 and 3 naturally occurred on sites with southerly aspects while stand 2 naturally occurred on northerly aspects; stand ages were similar for the three stands (36–38 years old). Total above- and belowground biomass including understory vegetation (Mg ha–1) was 108.4 for stand 1, 115.6 for stand 2, and 132.0 for stand 3, respectively. Understory vegetation constituted 17.4% of the total biomass in stand 1 but only 3.7–4.5% in stand 2 and stand 3. Roots constituted 20.1–24.6% of the biomass of the overstory vegetation. Although stand 3 showed the highest total biomass, net production was highest in stand 2 at 12.6 (Mg ha–1 year–1); net production levels for stands 1 and 3 were 11.7 and 11.1 (Mg ha–1 year–1), respectively. It appeared that the differences in site conditions related to aspect influenced the distribution of naturally regenerated oak species within a relatively small area and resulted in differences in biomass and production among the stands.  相似文献

Rank correlations between tree species diversity in forest stands and parameters of landscape pattern were calculated using data from 4933 locations in Otepää Nature Park. Stand diversity was characterised by the number of tree species in the stand formula and by the index of dominance of tree species’ coverage. Landscape diversity was characterised by locally calculated pattern parameters from three categorical map layers (1:10 000 base map, 1:10 000 soil map, combination of these maps) and from six numerical variables (elevation, slope angle, four channels of a Landsat 7 ETM image).A weak trend appeared for more diverse forest stands to be located in more diverse landscapes according to the base map. Forest stand diversity is also higher on steeper slopes and in places surrounded by slopes of varying steepness. The correlation between landscape diversity and biodiversity depends on the radius of the kernel in which landscape characteristics are calculated. Evidence of an indicative neighbourhood could be seen in many spatial relationships. The spatial correlation between stand diversity and indices calculated from the base map was most visible at distances ranging from 400 to 500 m; surface elevation and its variation correlates with stand diversity at distances of 100–200 m. Some relationships between forest diversity and landscape diversity that had a different sign of correlation in proximate and distant kernels can be interpreted as a need to standardise local landscape indices with the index values in a wider neighbourhood as a reference.  相似文献

Tree species richness, tree density, basal area, population structure and distribution pattern were investigated in undisturbed, mildly disturbed, moderately disturbed and highly disturbed stands of tropical wet evergreen forests of Arunachal Pradesh. The forest stands were selected based on the disturbance index (the basal area of the cut trees measured at ground level expressed as a fraction of the total basal area of all trees including felled ones): (i) undisturbed stand (0% disturbance index), (ii) mildly disturbed (20% disturbance index), (iii) moderately disturbed (40% disturbance index), and (iv) highly disturbed stand (70% disturbance index). Tree species richness varied along the disturbance gradient in different stands. The mildly disturbed stand showed the highest species richness (54 of 51 genera). Species richness was lowest (16 of 16 genera) in the highly disturbed stand. In the undisturbed stand, 47 species of 42 genera were recorded while in the moderately disturbed stand 42 species of 36 genera were found. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index for tree species ranged from 0.7 to 2.02 in all the stands. The highest tree diversity was recorded in the undisturbed stand and the lowest in the highly disturbed stand. The stands differed with respect to the tree species composition at the family and generic level. Fagaceae, Dipterocarpaceae and Clusiaceae dominated over other families and contributed 53% in the undisturbed, 51% in the mildly disturbed, 42% in the moderately disturbed and 49% in the highly disturbed forest stands to the total density of the respective stand. Stand density was highest (5452 stems ha–1) in the undisturbed stand, followed by the mildly disturbed stand (5014), intermediate (3656) in the moderately disturbed stand and lowest (338) in the highly disturbed stand. Dominance, calculated as the importance value index of different species, varied greatly across the stands. The highest stand density and species richness were represented in the medium girth class (51–110 cm) in all the stands. In the undisturbed stand, the highest density was found in the 111–140 cm girth class, while in the mildly disturbed stand the 51–80 cm girth range recorded the highest density. About 55, 68 and 52% species were found to be regenerating in the undisturbed, mildly disturbed and moderately disturbed stands, respectively. No regeneration was recorded in the highly disturbed stand. Variation in species richness, distribution pattern and regeneration potential is related to human interference and the need for forest conservation is emphasized.  相似文献

Mapping and characterization of mangrove plant communities in Hong Kong   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
Ecological surveys were carried out to investigate the distribution and characterization of remaining mangrove stands in Hong Kong. The field studies indicate that 43 mangrove stands, excluding Mai Po Nature Reserve, still remained along the coastline of Hong Kong despite tremendous reclamation and development which occurred in the past 40 years. Most mangrove stands were found in Deep Bay (western part)and Sai Kung District (eastern coasts). The total areas occupied by these mangrove stands were 178 ha,varying from a very small stand (with 1–2 mangrove shrubs) to fairly extensive mangroves in Deep Bay (> 10 ha). It appeared that mangrove stands located in Deep Bay area were larger than those in the eastern coasts. Twenty plant species were identified from these stands, with 13 being exclusive or associate mangrove species. The major constituent species were Kandelia candel, Aegiceras corniculatum, Excoecaria agallocha and Avicennia marina. Rare species such as Heritiera littoralis were only found in a few mangrove stands. Out of the 43remaining mangrove stands, 23 were more worthwhile for conservation and their plant community structures were further investigated by transect and quadrat analyses. The importance values (sum of relative abundance, frequency and dominance) show that K. candel was the most dominant species. Species richness and Simpson's indices together with tree height, tree density and canopy area fluctuated significantly between mangrove stands. These values were used to prioritize the conservation potential of the remaining mangrove stands in Hong Kong. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The distribution and growth forms of the mangroves on Zanzibar island (Unguja and Pemba) were investigated. Pemba island, with approximately 12000 ha of mangroves, had nine species; and Unguja island, with 6 000 ha, had eight. Average cropping intensities in Pemba island varied between 350–1937 cut plants per ha while in Unguja these were between 777–3567 cut plants per ha. In Pemba, mangrove forests were relatively less heavily exploited compared to those in Unguja, where clear felling was common. Charcoal, lime and salt production are the major activities which involve heavy utilization of mangrove wood. The fishery resources (shellfish and finfish) associated with the mangrove vegetation were also investigated by examining the composition of fish catches at landing stations in mangrove as well as nonmangrove zones of fishing districts. A survey on the fauna associated with mangrove forests was also conducted. A number of the local commercial fish species were found to be associated with the mangrove vegetation. The fishes of the genusLethrinus and the rabbit fishSiganus were found to constitute the bulk of the fish caught from waters adjacent to mangroves using movable traps. The molluscPyrazus sp., which is commonly used by the local people for food and bait, was found only in the mangroves.  相似文献

The fish community of an East African mangrove creek   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The results of a beach seine survey of an East African mangrove creek are presented. The fish community of the creek is described and is compared with that of a nearby lagoonal site and with those described for other mangrove and estuarine systems. The species composition was found to differ substantially between the creek and the lagoon site, though diversity indices for the two areas were similar. Eighty-three species of teleost fish werecollected from the mangrove area of the creek. This number is considered high in relation to comparable studies and is attributed to the constant high salinity (approximately 35%o) measured throughout the study period. Approximately 90% of the fish caught were juveniles. Plankton sampling was also carried out and representatives of 21 fish families were collected as larvae within the creek. Catches from both beach seining and plankton sampling in the mangrove areas were dominated numerically by resident clupeid and gobiid species. The majority of species, however, were considered to have a widespread distribution as adults. A discrepancy between the catch composition of larvae and juveniles suggests that species that use the creek as a nursery area enter the system principally at a post-larval/ juvenile stage of development. No systematic spatial or temporal variation in the community structure was identified over the study period.  相似文献

In four lagoons at two atolls and one high island in the Tuamotu and Society Islands, French Polynesia, plankton samples were taken weekly during 4 weeks in January/February 1989. A third atoll lagoon was sampled once. The lagoons varied in size and physical openness. We also sampled in the ocean near two atolls and the high island. All locations were sampled during the day, and three lagoons (two atolls and one high island) were also sampled at night. Pelagic fish eggs were more abundant in the ocean than in the lagoons at the atolls, but not at the high island. Larvae of coastal fishes were abundant in all lagoons. In the atoll lagoons, larvae of oceanic fishes were very rare to absent, but in the high-island lagoons and in the ocean, they were commonly encountered. In the ocean, larvae of many typical reef-fish taxa were abundant (58 taxa were represented by at least 10 individuals), but in the lagoons, most of these were rare or absent, and we conclude that these rare and absent taxa normally do not complete their larval phase in lagoons.Taxa were considered to be able to complete their pelagic phase in a lagoon (i.e., were 'completers') if they were present in the lagoon plankton samples from across a full larval size range. In the high-island barrier-reef lagoon, young, preflexion larvae were abundant, but only two taxa (of 56 captured) were present over a wide size range and were considered completers in this lagoon. In the high-island lagoonal bay, 11 taxa (of 67 captured) were considered completers. The numbers of taxa captured in the three atoll lagoons ranged from 39–44, and the number of taxa considered to be completers increased with increasing lagoon size and physical openness. The 17 completer taxa in the smallest, most enclosed atoll lagoon were, with one exception, a subset of those (18) in the second lagoon which, in turn, with one exception, were a subset of those in the largest, most open lagoon (26). Completer taxa were of the families Apogonidae, Blenniidae, Bothidae, Callionymidae, Carangidae, Gobiidae, Microdesmidae, Mullidae, Pomacentridae, Schindleriidae, and Tetraodontidae. The species that can complete their pelagic periods in coral-reef lagoons are a highly predictable group, and not simply a random selection of the potential species pool. Most of these species hatch from non-pelagic eggs. Water renewal times in the atoll lagoons, unlike the high-island barrier-reef lagoon, were much longer than expected pelagic larval durations of completer taxa. Demographically, lagoon populations of completer taxa apparently self-recruit and are probably near the closed end of the open/closed population continuum. The lagoonal bay on the high island differs from the other lagoons in containing larvae of species not found elsewhere, including some completers, and lacking some species that are abundant completers in other lagoons. In French Polynesia, lagoon size is a strong predictor of the number of lagoon completer taxa. The number of completer taxa apparently peaks at intermediate lagoon water-exchange times.  相似文献

This study analyses the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on plant diversity and community attributes of a sacred grove (montane subtropical forest) at Swer in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya in northeast India. The undisturbed, moderately disturbed and highly disturbed stands were identified within the sacred grove on the basis of canopy cover, light interception and tree (cbh 15 cm) density. The undisturbed forest stand had >40% canopy cover, >50% light interception and a density of 2103 trees per hectare, whereas the highly disturbed stand had <10% canopy cover, <10% light interception and 852 trees per hectare. The moderately disturbed stand occupied the intermediate position with respect to these parameters. The study revealed that the mild disturbance favoured species richness, but with increased degree of disturbance, as was the case in the highly disturbed stand, the species richness markedly decreased. The number of families of angiosperms was highest (63) in the undisturbed stand, followed by the moderately (60) and highly disturbed (46) stands. The families Rubiaceae, Asteraceae and Poaceae were the dominant families in the sacred forest. Rubiaceae was represented by 11, 14 and 10 species in the undisturbed, moderately disturbed and highly disturbed stands, respectively, whilst the family Asteraceae had 16 species in the moderately disturbed stand and 14 species in the highly disturbed stand. The number of families represented by a single species was reduced significantly from 33 in the undisturbed stand to 23 in the moderately and 21 in the highly disturbed stand. The similarity index was maximum (71%) between the undisturbed and moderately disturbed stand and minimum (33%) between the undisturbed and highly disturbed stands. The Margalef index, Shannon diversity index and evenness index exhibited a similar trend, with highest values in the moderately disturbed stand. In contrast, the Simpson dominance index was highest in the highly disturbed stand. There was a sharp decline in tree density and basal area from the undisturbed (2103 trees ha–1 and 26.9 m2 ha–1) to the moderately disturbed (1268 trees ha–1 and 18.6 m2 ha–1) and finally to the highly disturbed (852 trees ha–1 and 7.1 m2 ha–1) stand. Density–girth curves depicted a successive reduction in number of trees in higher girth classes from the undisturbed to the moderately and highly disturbed stands. The log-normal dominance–distribution curve in the undisturbed and moderately disturbed stands indicated the complex and stable nature of the community. However, the short-hooked curve obtained for the highly disturbed stand denoted its simple and unstable nature.  相似文献

The taxonomic list and the structure of benthic diatom assemblages occurring in fine sediments (silt and sand) from the mangrove forest of the Balandra lagoon in Baja California Sur, Mexico was determined based on seasonal samplings for one year. Assemblage structure was analyzed using several ecological indices for estimating diversity (H'), dominance (REDI), equitability, and similarity. A total of 230 diatom taxa were identified and include 109 new records for the Baja California peninsula coast. Taxa representative of highly productive and hypersaline environments were common. Assemblages were characterized by a few abundant species and many uncommon or rare taxa. High diatom diversity estimates at all sampling sites during all seasons suggest that diatom assemblages in sediments of the Balandra lagoon represent a quasi-pristine environment.  相似文献

Structurally complex mangrove roots are thought to provide foraging habitat, predation refugia, and typhoon protection for resident fish, shrimp, and crabs. The spatially compact nature of Micronesian mangroves results in model ecosystems to test these ideas. Tidal creek nekton assemblages were compared among mangrove forests impacted by Typhoon Sudal and differing in stand structure. Structurally complex Rhizophora spp. stands were predicted to support higher densities and different communities of nekton and to provide greater protection from typhoons compared to less complex Sonneratia alba/Bruguiera gymnorrhiza stands. Lift net data revealed that structural complexity did not support greater nekton densities, but did support significantly different nekton assemblages. The cardinalfish Apogon ceramensis and goby Oxyurichthys lonchotus had significantly higher densities in S. alba/B. gymnorrhiza mangrove creeks, whereas the silverside Atherinomorus lacunosus and diogenid crabs had significantly higher densities in Rhizophora spp. creeks. Similar nekton densities 17 and 4 months after the typhoon in Rhizophora spp. creeks provided indirect evidence that structural complexity increased protection for resident nekton from disturbances. Findings indicate that studies of structural complexity and nekton densities may be better served when individual species are compared and that diverse mangrove tree assemblages will support diverse nekton assemblages that may be more resilient to disturbance.  相似文献

Short term variations of zooplankton populations were studied during an algal spring bloom in two characteristic areas of the Marennes-Oléron Bay (France). The sampling sites were chosen in the north of the bay, one close to the neritic zone, the other close to the estuarine zone. Five distinct zooplanktonic communities were observed: two typical neritic and estuarine assemblages, two eurytopic groups (linked to neritic or estuarine water masses) and an autochtonous community, widely distributed in the north of the bay. The copepod Euterpina acutifrons dominated the zooplankton community during this period of the year in terms of abundance (up to 83% of the zooplankton community). Its production differed between water masses: the highest production occurred at the estuarine station (3.48 ± 0.65 mg C m–3 d–1), where nauplii accounted for a large part of these high values. Its P/B ratio was similar at the two stations (0.196 and 0.209 d–1).  相似文献

Seasonal changes and vertical distribution of fine (< 2 mm diameter) and coarse (2-10 mm diameter) root mass of Pinus kesiya and fine root and rhizome mass of herbaceous species, and root production were studied in the 6-, 15- and 23-year old Pinus kesiya forest stands at Shillong, in the Meghalaya state of north-east India. Maximum fine and coarse root mass of P. kesiya, and fine root and rhizome mass of the ground vegetation were recorded during the rainy season. The contribution of the tree fine roots in 0-10 cm soil layer declined from 51% in the 6-year old stand to about 33% in the older stands. The major proportion (63-88%) of herbaceous fine root and rhizome mass was concentrated in this soil layer in all the three stands. The majority (36-57%) of tree coarse roots were present in the 10-20 cm layer in all the stands. The biomass and necromass values in the case of fine roots were more or less equal in a given stand, but the coarse roots had 5 to 9 times more live than the dead mass. The proportion of herbaceous fine root mass to the total fine root mass declined from 54% in the 6-year old stand to 30-32% in the 15- and 23-year old stands. The mean total fine root mass (pine + herbaceous species) decreased from 417 g m–2 in the 6-year old stand to 302 in 15-year and 322 g m–2 in the 23-year old stand. Annual fine root production showed a marked decrease from 1055 g m–2 in the 6-year old stand to 743 g m–2 in the 23-year old stand, but coarse root production increased from 169 g m–2 in the 6-year to 466 g m–2  in the 23-year old stand; the total root production thus remained approximately constant.  相似文献

Intertidal stands of seagrass are important elements in the ecology of many estuaries yet the manner in which their associated macrobenthic biodiversity is distributed throughout any single estuary has never been determined. This has now been attempted for the Knysna estuarine bay in the Garden Route National Park, South Africa, an important site for one vulnerable and declining seagrass, Cape dwarf-eelgrass (Nanozostera capensis), and for several associated animals. Although spanning a salinity range of <5–35, the seagrass beds of this estuary contained a unitary fauna with local variation in frequency and abundance of the various species. Faunal biodiversity was highest along the main estuarine channel in the marine-influenced region and declined both upstream and into the sheltered peripheral zones, overall faunal abundance being inversely correlated with species diversity (though not with species richness). This pattern results in the beds around the 4 km shoreline of a single island near the mouth supporting 91 % of the total macrobenthic invertebrate species present in the system. This situation is discussed in relation to such data as are available from other comparable systems and to the conservation of estuarine seagrass faunal biodiversity. It is concluded that in general and with caveats for some individual species of concern where conservation resources are limited attention would most profitably be focused on the seagrass meadows of downstream estuarine areas.  相似文献

Abstract. We studied plant diversity of the understory vascular vegetation in 40 yr-old plantations (immature stands) and old-growth forest stands on southwestern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Site-specific comparisons using several indices of species diversity were made between: (1) immature stands segregated according to the canopy cover and dominant canopy tree species; and (2) immature and old-growth stands. There were no significant differences (P < 0.05) among immature stands in species richness (S) and the Shannon-Wiener index (H′), in relation to the canopy cover or in S, H′ and evenness (E) in relation to the dominant canopy tree species. Using the same indices, the plant diversity varied with edaphic conditions (represented by five site associations) and time (represented by two developmental stages). At both stand- and site levels, plant diversity increased with increasing soil moisture, from slightly dry to moist sites, and with increasing plant-available soil nitrogen in both immature and old-growth stands; and the plant diversity of immature stands across the sites studied was considerably lower than in old-growth stands, regardless of site association. The indices of plant diversity, floristic similarity indices, and species turnover rates indicated that the immature stands had their plant diversity at a minimum, but a drastic loss of diversity expected in the stem exclusion stage had not materialized. We attributed decline in plant diversity to the absence of old-growth structural features in immature stands. Several measures to foster the stand-level diversity were proposed.  相似文献

Summary Spatial pattern was analyzed in seventeen stands of oak-dominated forest to address the hypothesis that species tended to be aggregated under favorable conditions and widely spaced in xeric, nutrient poor conditions. Trees were sampled at 80–100 points in each stand with the distance-to-nearest neighbor method. Soil samples were collected in each stand for analysis of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium, soil pH, soil texture, and soil organic matter. Growing season precipitation was also recorded from climate stations near each stand. Quercus stellata (Wang.) dominated 10 stands, Q. marilandica (Muenchh.) dominated three stands and these species were codominant in four stands. Principal components analysis identified a soil texture/fertility gradient across the study area. Quercus stellata and all species combined were aggregated in most stands, whereas Q. marilandica was mostly randomly distributed within a stand. Small trees of all species combined tended to be aggregated and large trees were randomly dispersed in all but two stands, suggesting competition. Mean distance between large-large pairs was always greater than mean distance between small-small pairs in all stands, but this difference was only significant in one stand. Correlations between nearest neighbor distance and combined size of nearest neighbors were significant and positive in 12 of 17 stands. In all cases, however, slopes were shallow suggesting that competition is weak in these communities and has a limited effect on spacing of neighboring trees. Contrary to our hypothesis, trees were more aggregated on coarse-textured soils with low organic matter content. For all species combined, degree of aggregation was unrelated to growing season precipitation. Aggregation appears to be common in these forests because environmental stress in many stands reduces growth rates. Trees have not yet reached a size at which competition or other interactions can greatly increase interplant distances and reduce the degree of aggregation. A simple graphical model is developed to describe the relationship between patterns, stress and competition in plant communities.  相似文献

Question: Can augmented forest stand complexity increase understory vegetation richness and cover and accelerate the development of late‐successional features? Does within‐stand understory vegetation variability increase after imposing treatments that increase stand structural complexity of the overstory? What is the relative contribution of individual stand structural components (i.e. forest matrix, gaps, and leave island reserves) to changes in understory vegetation richness? Location: Seven study sites in the Coastal Range and Cascades regions of Oregon, USA. Methods: We examined the effects of thinning six years after harvest on understory plant vascular richness and cover in 40‐ to 60‐year‐old forest stands dominated by Douglas‐fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). At each site, one unthinned control was preserved and three thinning treatments were implemented: low complexity (LC, 300 trees ha?1), moderate complexity (MC, 200 trees ha?1), and high complexity (HC, variable densities from 100 to 300 trees ha?1). Gaps openings and leave island reserves were established in MC and HC. Results: Richness of all herbs, forest herbs, early seral herbs and shrubs, and introduced species increased in all thinning treatments, although early seral herbs and introduced species remained a small component. Only cover of early seral herbs and shrubs increased in all thinning treatments whereas forest shrub cover increased in MC and HC. In the understory, we found 284 vascular plant species. After accounting for site‐level differences, the richness of understory communities in thinned stands differed from those in control stands. Within‐treatment variability of herb and shrub richness was reduced by thinning. Matrix areas and gap openings in thinned treatments appeared to contribute to the recruitment of early seral herbs and shrubs. Conclusions: Understory vegetation richness increased 6 years after imposing treatments, with increasing stand complexity mainly because of the recruitment of early seral and forest herbs, and both low and tall shrubs. Changes in stand density did not likely lead to competitive species exclusion. The abundance of potentially invasive introduced species was much lower compared to other plant groups. Post‐thinning reductions in within‐treatment variability was caused by greater abundance of early seral herbs and shrubs in thinned stands compared with the control. Gaps and low‐density forest matrix areas created as part of spatially variably thinning had greater overall species richness. Increased overstory variability encouraged development of multiple layers of understory vegetation.  相似文献
