Comparative hematology: Studies on cats including one with factor XII (hageman) deficiency

• 1.1. Cat plasma prothrombin and partial thromboplastin times are faster than human. Thromboplastin generation tests are very similar.
• 2.2. Factors VIII and V assay 24 and 13 times the human standard. Cat factors VII, X. IX, XI and XII assayed at 2.5 to 4 times human. Factors I, II and XIII fell within the human range and Fletcher was extremely low.

• 1.1. Comparative aspects of iodine conservation in mammals were studied on the basis of published data on kidney and thyroid weights and function.
• 2.2. Very small mammals possessed an efficient reabsorption of iodide to compensate for the high glomerular nitration rate (GFR).
• 3.3. Humans and mammals of a similar and larger size had “lost” the ability to reabsorb iodide efficiently.
• 4.4. Very large mammals are protected against renal loss of iodide due to the relatively low GFR.

A comparative study of porphyrin synthesis by whole blood and haemolysates from different mammalian species

• 1.1. There is no uniform pattern of porphyrin synthesis by whole blood and haemolysates, between the different mammalian species studied.
• 2.2. Coproporphyrin, is the dominant porphyrin synthesised by intact red cells.
• 3.3. Uroporphyrin synthesis increases significantly in the majority of species when the cells are haemolysed.
• 4.4. In the mouse large amounts of protoporphyrin are synthesised by intact red cells which increases further on haemolysis.
• 5.5. The low porphyrin synthesising capacity of cow and sheep red cells is not due to any rate-limiting activity of the enzyme ALA-dehydratase.
• 6.6. The dog has a pattern of porphyrin synthesis and excretion similar to that found in the rabbit, and the possibility exists, that a similar energy-dependent carrier mechanism for movement of uroporphyrin and coproporphyrin across red cell membranes found in the rabbit may be present in this species.
• 7.7. The findings may be of significance in the interpretation of porphyrin excretion patterns in experimental porphyria.

     

Properties of enzymes hydrating epoxides in human epidermis and liver

• 1.1. Cytosolic and microsomal epoxide hydrolyzing enzymes of human skin and liver were compared and found to be different.
• 2.2. Epidermal and hepatic cytosolic epoxide hydrolases were different in terms of substrate selectivity, pI, inhibitor sensitivity and affinity Chromatographic properties.
• 3.3. Microsomal epoxide hydrolases had the same pIs but different substrate selectivities.

• 1.1. A manganese containing superoxide dismutase from bovine heart mitochondria was isolated and characterized.
• 2.2. It has a molecular weight of about 86,000 and is composed of 4 noncovalently bound subunits of equal size.
• 3.It appears to contain 2 mole manganese per mole enzyme.
• 4.The carbohydrate content is very low.
• 5.The specific activity and amino acid composition are similar to those of other mitoehondrial superoxide dismutases.

Characteristics of Crassostrea virginica crystalline style chitin digestion

• 1.1. Fundamental chitin digestion characteristics of Crassostrea virginica crystalline style were investigated.
• 2.2. Optimum temperature and pH were 34°C and 4.8. respectively.
• 3.3. The colloidal regenerated chitin (0.56mol/0.5 ml: GlcNAc equivalents) was saturating under all enzyme levels encountered.
• 4.4. There was no evidence of end product inhibition, even after 100 hr incubation.
• 5.5. Calculated K_m for the chitinase complex was 1.19mM when determined using a 30 min assay, but was only 0.70 mM when determined using a 4.6 hr assay.
• 6.6. Both K_m values are lower than reported for similar assays in other molluscs and for most bacteria.
• 7.7. Effect of substrate preparation on the kinetics are discussed.
• 8.8. Eight peaks of chitinase activity were resolved by DEAE-Fractogel ion exchange chromatography.

     

A comparative study of the basic nuclear proteins from sperm of bivalve molluscs

• 1.1. Basic nuclear proteins from spermatozoa of the three mollusc species belonging to the class Bivalvia have been analyzed using one- and two-dimensional electrophoresis.
• 2.2. Four nuclear basic proteins have been purified and their amino acid compositions determined.
• 3.3. In these spermatozoa histone-type proteins coexist with protamine-like proteins.
• 4.4. The protamine-like proteins that have been studied show different electrophoretic behavior but in general are similar, with a high content of lysine, arginine, alanine and serine.
• 5.5. Interspecific variability has been found for the H1-like histone.

     

Correlation of water translocation,cuticle dehydration and post-ecdysial sclerotization by the american cockroach

• 1.1. Haemolymph volume decreases during the initial 16 hr post-ecdysial period, increases after water ingestion and subsequently drops until the inter-ecdysial level is reached.
• 2.2. Total body water follows a similar pattern, but the changes are not as pronounced.
• 3.3. Tissue water is inversely proportional to the total body water.
• 4.4. Soluble cuticle protein declines throughout the initial 16 hr period while both β-glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase activity is lost within 6 hr after ecdysis.
• 5.5. Dehydration of the cuticle also occurs during the immediate 6 hr post-ecdysial period.
• 6.6. These data suggest that the formation of the protein-insoluble matrix is linked with water loss.
• 7.7. Water removal may decrease the distance between molecules allowing specific reactions to take place.

     

Plasma lipid transport in the horse (Equus caballus)

• 1.1. Equine plasma contains lipoproteins corresponding to very low density (VLDL), low density (LDL) and high density lipoproteins (HDL).
• 2.2. HDL accounts for approximately 60% of plasma lipoprotein mass and consists of a single population of particles.
• 3.3. LDL is heterogeneous comprising three discrete subfractions.
• 4.4. Two proteins are found in the region of apolipoprotein (apo) B-100 in VLDL and LDL and a third similar to apo B-48 is in VLDL.
• 5.5. Lecithin:cholesterol acyl transferase is active in plasma and hepatic lipase and lipoprotein lipase are evident in post-heparin plasma.
• 6.6. There is no significant cholesteryl ester transfer protein activity.

     

The digestive proteases of langostilla (pleuroncodes planipes,decapoda): their partial characterization,and the effect of feed on their composition

• 1.1. Three methods of recuperating and preserving enzyme activity from freshly-caught langostilla were assessed. In the pressing and acetone extract methods, the recovered specific activity was similar.
• 2.2. Protease activity was higher between 6.5 and 8 pH, and was sensitive to high temperatures.
• 3.3. In PAGE and serine inhibition assays, one fraction resembled bovine trypsin.
• 4.4. The composition of proteins and molecules bearing protease activity from the hepatopancreas and stomach of both fed and starved animals was similar, indicating proteases are not induced but constitutive.

     

The effects of chronic metabolic acidosis on patterns of protein synthesis in rat renal cortex

• 1.1. In the rat chronic metabolic acidosis increases the net synthesis of 17 renal cortex proteins by amounts ranging from 1.5 to 4.5-fold.
• 2.2. These proteins have molecular weights between 13,000 and 42,000 and isoelectric points between approximately 5.5 and 7.0.
• 3.3. No new proteins not also present in normal animals are detected in renal cortex samples from acidotic animals.
• 4.4. Three proteins undergo substantial reductions in their net synthetic rates in chronic metabolic acidosis.
• 5.5. On the basis of their physical properties and similar alterations in net synthetic rate in acidosis some of these proteins appear to be closely related and may be coordinately expressed in the rat kidney.

     

Proteolytic system in Babesia hylomysci

• 1.1. Babesia hylomysci has an aminopeptidase and an acid endoprotease
• 2.2. The amino-peptidase has properties very similar to the aminopeptidase in Plasmodium yoelii nigeriensis and P. chabaudi.
• 3.3. The acid endoprotease is specific towards haemoglobin and practically has no action on bovine serum albumin.
• 4.4. In mouse normal red blood cells we find an acid protease having physico-chemical properties similar to the enzyme present in B. hylomysci extracts.
• 5.5. The similarity of electrophoretic velocity between acid protease in B. hylomysci and non-infected red blood cells leads us to think that the acid protease of parasitic extracts comes from the host-cell.
• 6.6. The proteolytic system of Babesia and Plasmodium are similar.

     

Analysis of clotting defects in diseased lobsters—I. Alterations in blood parameters

• 1.1. In gaffkemic lobsters kept at 15°C. drastic declines in the hemocyte number and clotting ability occur.
• 2.2. In animals kept at 10°C, although some clotting defects rapidly occur, a high number of amoebocytes is found. Clotting ability reappears after 5 days.
• 3.3. The proportion of each type of hemocyte changes. Numerous hemocytes show morphologic altered features.
• 4.4. Dorsal hematopoietic tissue is as in control lobsters.
• 5.5. Total protein contents are similar in bacteremic or control lobster hemolymphs.

     

Preliminary studies on the characteristics of phenylalanine and β-methyl-glucoside transport in the tench intestine in vitro

• 1.1. The unidirectional transepithelial fluxes of L-phenylalanine, β-methyl-D-glucoside and sodium ions across emusculated sheets of tench mid-intestine were determined in flux chambers.
• 2.2. No net sodium flux was detectable, but phenylalanine was preferentially transferred from the mucosal to the serosal fluid.
• 3.3. There was also a net movement of β-methyl-glucoside towards the serosal medium, but it was much smaller than that of phenylalanine.
• 4.4. This transport was accompanied by an accumulation of each substrate from the mucosal medium into the tissue to a similar level and against a concentration gradient.
• 5.5. The poor transfer of the monosaccharide into the serosal medium could therefore be attributed to a low permeability of the baso-lateral membrane of the enterocyte for this substance.
• 6.6. The influx of L-phenylalanine and of β-methyl-d-glucoside into the epithelial cells of tench midintestine was examined by incubating slices of emusculated intestine in radioactively-labelled solutions of the substrate for 2 min.
• 7.7. The steady-state uptake was assessed after similar incubations lasting 45 min.
• 8.8. Phenylalanine influx obeys the Michaelis-Menten equation with a K_m of 2.9 mM and is dependent on the presence of sodium ions in the incubation medium.
• 9.9. β-Methyl-glucoside influx reveals the same characteristics with a K_m of 2.0 mM but a considerably lower V_max; in addition, it is inhibited by galactose.
• 10.10. The influx of both substrates is reduced by harmaline, which also inhibits the uptake of radioactive sodium by this preparation.
• 11.11. The steady-state uptake of β-methyl-glucoside is also inhibited by ouabain and by 2.4-dinitrophenol.
• 12.12. These results suggest that the mechanisms for sodium-dependent influx of monosaccharides and neutral amino-acids in the tench intestine are similar to those found in mammalian tissues.
• 13.13. The principal difference appears to involve the release of monosaccharides across the baso-lateral membrane of the enterocyte.

This paper comments on: Low, B. S., Alexander, R. D., and Noonan, K.M. Human hips, breast, and buttocks: Is fat deceptive? Ethology and Sociobiology 8: 249-247, 1987. In it I argue that:

• 1.1. Sexual selection has probably not been the most important selection pressure on
• 2.female human body shape.
• 3.2. Male humans in different cultures find different aspects of the female body attractive
• 4.and therefore are unlikely to have exerted consistent directional sexual selection on
• 5.the female body.
• 6.3. Breast size is not correlated with lactation success.
• 7.4. Visible hip width is not correlated with parturition success.
• 8.5. Women would lower their fitness if they tried to deceive men about their internal
• 9.pelvic dimensions.
• 10.6. There are many alternative hypothesis to explain the existence of fat onwomen's
• 11.breast, hips, and buttocks.

     

Isolation and partial characterization of uric acid spherules obtained from cockroach tissues (Dictyoptera)

• 1.1. Urate spherules obtained from three cockroach species have been isolated, purified and examined by scanning electron microscopy, atomic absorption, i.r. and Kjeldahl analysis.
• 2.2. Purified spherules exposed to ionic environments may change from a smooth to a textured form.
• 3.3. Ion analysis confirmed that the spherules are high in K⁺ and low in Na⁺.
• 4.4. All preparations from the cockroach tissues diaplayed similar i.r. spectra, but were dissimilar to those of uric acid and urate salt standards.
• 5.5. It appears that there is a distinct pattern or mechanism by which the cockroach urates are deposited in the spherule matrix.
