Plants have many well-documented influences in treatment wetlands, but differences in individual species’ effects on year-round and seasonal performance are poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated plant effects on seasonal patterns of organic carbon removal (measured as COD) and sulfate concentration (used as an indicator of rootzone oxidation) in replicated, batch-loaded, greenhouse microcosms simulating subsurface treatment wetlands. Microcosms were planted with monocultures of 19 plant species or left unplanted as controls, dosed every 20 days with synthetic secondary wastewater, and operated over 20 months at temperatures from 4 to 24 °C. Study-long COD removal averaged 70% for controls and 70-97% for individual species. Most species enhanced COD removal significantly and the benefits of plants were greatest at 4-8 °C because COD removal decreased at low temperatures in controls but displayed limited seasonal variation in planted microcosms. Removal was significantly better at 24 °C than 4 °C with two species (Panicum virgatum and Leymus cinereus), significantly poorer with two species (Carex utriculata and Phalaris arundinacea), and did not differ with 15 species. Only one species showed a significant positive correlation between temperature and COD removal (Iris missouriensis, r = 0.67), while two species showed significant negative correlations (better when colder: Carex nebrascensis, r = −0.67; C. utriculata, r = −0.93). High COD removal throughout the study was strongly associated with high SO4 concentrations at low temperatures, suggesting that plant performance is related to rootzone oxidation and species’ abilities to promote aerobic over anaerobic microbial processes, particularly in winter. Results indicate that improved year-round and cold-season COD removal is common across diverse wetland plant species and novel species can be as good or better than those typically used. Better performing species were largely in the sedge and rush families (Cyperaceae and Juncaceae), while poorer performing species were largely in the grass family (Poaceae).  相似文献

The holocentric structure promotes chromosome rearrangements by fission, fusion, translocation, and inversion, which have been thought to promote differentiation and speciation. The Carex laevigata group (Cyperaceae) comprises four species: two restricted endemics from the western Mediterranean (Carex camposii, 2n = 72, and Carex paulo-vargasii, 2n = 74–75), and two more widespread species, found mostly in Western Europe (C. laevigata, 2n = 69–84, and Carex binervis, 2n = 72–74). We tested the selection for chromosome number by climatic variables by controlling for the non-independence of the data using generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). We obtained chromosome counts as well as DNA sequences for the 5′ trnK intron and the trnV-ndhC intergenic spacer in the chloroplast genome from 181 individuals from 53 populations representing these four species. We also climatically characterized the sites where the 53 populations were found using the WorldClim database. Our results show that the best predictor of chromosome number variation is the climatic environment rather than neutral evolutionary processes like founder events and migration patterns. These results support the adaptive value of the holocentric chromosomes and their role in promoting differentiation and eventually speciation.  相似文献

The effect of flooding sites of former, periodically flooded water-meadows in northern Sweden was studied in two areas for two and three years, respectively. The vegetation consisted m mainly of Equisetum fluviatile L., Carex rostrata Stokes, Carex aquatilis Wahlenb., Comarum palustre L., and Lysimachia thyrsiflora L. Increase in water depth caused a significant decrease in the species number. Carex rostrata, C. aquatilis and Lysimachia thyrsiflora were almost eliminated (although Carex aquatilis seemed to be somewhat more tolerant to the increased water depth). Equisetum fluviatile was unaffected, except for increase in shoot length, while the effect of flooding on Comarum palustre was intermediate.The practical application of flooding is discussed with regard to habitat management for waterfowl.  相似文献

Karyotypes and chromosomal data are presented for eight bat species representing two families (Rhinolophidae and Vespertilionidae) from Hainan Island, China. The species investigated were Rhinolophus lepidus (2n = 62, FN = 60), R. pusillus (2n = 62, FN = 60), R. affinis (2n = 62, FN = 60), R. sinicus (2n = 36, FN = 60), Myotis horsfieldi (2n = 44, FN = 52), Pipistrellus abramus (2n = 26, FN = 44), Miniopterus australis (2n = 46, FN = 50) and M. schreibersii (2n = 46, FN = 50). The number and range of taxa belonging to the Central European section Phaestoglochin (Carex L.) differ significantly among systematic classifications. Our study revealed that all of the quantitative morphological features of perigynia of Carex spicata Huds., Carex muricata subsp. muricata L., Carex muricata subsp. lamprocarpa ?elak., Carex divulsa subsp. divulsa Stokes, and Carex divulsa subsp. leersii Koch., had statistically significant differences among taxa. However, this differentiation did not reflect the known taxonomic divisions of the group and therefore, it did not represent a determining criterion for distinguishing the particular taxa. It also did not confirm the close and significant connections between subspecies within the species studied. Based on morphological features of perigynia, we showed that C. divulsa is a well-distinguished taxon, while the other taxa form a complex group. Analysis of the differentiation of perigynium features among the taxa studied against the background of the plant communities where the plants were grown indicated a distinct effect of the habitat conditions on the morphological features of perigynia.  相似文献

The productivity of three plant communities differeing in moisture conditions was studied in the river basin of the Dyje near the village of Lan?hot (Southern Moravia). Plants can influence methane emissions from wetland ecosystems by altering its production, consumption and transport in the soil. The aim of this study was to investigate how eight vascular plant species from mesotrophic to eutrophic wetlands vary in their influence on CH4 emissions from peat cores, under low and high N supply. Additionally, we measured the production of low-molecular-weight organic acids (LOA) by the same species (also at low and high N supply), because LOA form a substrate for methanogenesis. There were considerable differences among species in their effects upon rates of CH4 emission. Six of the species (Eriophorum latifolium Hoppe, Potentilla palustris (L.) Scop., Anthoxanthum odoratum (L.) s. str., Carex rostrata Stokes, Carex elata All., Carex acutiformis Ehrh.) increased CH4 emissions up to five times compared to control peat cores without plants, whereas two species (Phalaris arundinacea L., Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.) had no effect. There was a weak negative correlation between plant biomass and CH4 emission. N addition had no significant general effect upon CH4 emission. LOA production varied considerably among species, and tended to be highest for species from mesotrophic habitats. LOA production was stimulated by N addition. We conclude that some species from mesotrophic wetlands tend to cause higher CH4 emissions than species from eutrophic wetlands. This pattern, which contradicts what is often mentioned in literature, may be explained by the higher LOA production rates of species adapted to less productive habitats.  相似文献

Abstract. In two fen areas of northeastern Germany, different techniques of re-introduction to establish reed-bed species in formerly intensively used, species-poor, grasslands, after rewetting, were studied under three hydrological regimes (permanent inundation, temporary inundation, border irrigation) with the aims (1) to establish peat-forming vegetation and (2) to enhance species richness. Establishment was successful for nearly all species investigated under all hydrological variants. There were differences between individuals sown and those which had been planted. Wet, but not inundated soil linked with vegetation gaps create ‘safe sites’ which enable successful germination and seedling establishment. The survival rate for both planted and sown individuals was generally high, with the exception of Cladium mariscus, Eupatorium cannabinum and Phragmites australis Recommendations for restoration management include the establishment of the following successful species: Carex acutiformis, C elata and C paniculata to establish peat-forming vegetation; Iris pseudacorus, Lysimachia vulgaris, Lythrum salicaria to enhance species richness.  相似文献

A total of 61 chromosome counts from 11 taxa of Korean Spiraea was made. Our counts are the first report for eight taxa;S. blumei (2n=18, 36),S. chartacea (2n=36),S. chinensis (2n=36),S. fritschiana (2n=27, 36),S. microgyna (2n=18),S. prunifolia var.simpliciflora (2n=18),S. pseudocrenata (2n=36), andS. trichocarpa (2n=18). A new chromosome number of 2n=36 (tetraploid) is reported forS. pubescence. Populations of three species includingS. blumei, S. pubescence and .V.fritschiana, show different ploidy levels; diploid and tetraploid populations are found in the former two species and triploid and tetraploid ones, in latter species. Multiplication of chromosome numbers contributes to increase in size of pollen and stomata in the three species. Populations with different ploidy levels inS. blumei occupy different regions; diploid populations in inland Korea and tetraploid ones in Ullung Island. Island tetraploid population of 5.blumei might be originated from intra-island polyploidization through the introduction of diploid from inland Korea, considering the worldwide distribution of this species. Pollen fertilities of island populations of ,S′.blumei are relatively low, and sometimes no pollen grain is produced in anther sacs; it suggests that tetraploid population of the island is gynodioecious which may serve reduction of inbreeding depression.  相似文献

In this paper cytogenetic studies on 64 specimens from 20 Iberian populations ofCarex laevigata (Cyperaceae) are presented. Chromosome behaviour in meiosis suggests that the different chromosome numbers obtained (ranging from 2n = 69 to 2n = 80) were distributed according to an increasing geographic gradient of chromosome fission along the North South direction. Four relatively stable areas were also delimited according to chromosome numbers displayed by this species, i.e. 2n = c. 72, c. 74, c. 76, and 78. The meiotic behaviour ofCarex ×deserta (C. laevigata ×C. binervis) was also studied.  相似文献

对中国产13种鸢尾属Iris植物进行了核型研究。其中中甸鸢尾I.subdichotoma、长葶鸢尾I.delavayi、大锐果鸢尾I.cuniculiformis为中国特有。大锐果鸢尾的染色体数目及核型为首次报道,核型公式为2n=22=4m 6sm 12st(2SAT)。长管鸢尾I.dolichosiphon的核型为首次报道,核型公式为2n=22=4m 12sm 6st。中甸鸢尾的染色体数目为新报道,核型公式为2n=42=20m 22sm。矮紫苞鸢尾I.ruthenicavar.nana的染色体数目为新报道,3个居群的染色体数目均为2n=42,核型公式分别为中甸居群2n=42=30m 12sm(2SAT),丽江甘海子居群2n=42=28m 14sm(2SAT),中甸尼西居群2n=42=36m 6sm(4SAT)。结合以往的细胞学研究结果,显示尼泊尔鸢尾亚属subgen.Nepalensis是一个染色体数目变化较大的类群,其中的中甸鸢尾可能是联系野鸢尾属Pardanthopsis与尼泊尔鸢尾亚属的重要类群。已报道的紫苞鸢尾I.ruthenica染色体数目为2n=84,与我们所研究的变种矮紫苞鸢尾(2n=42)呈倍性关系,通过与相邻类群的分析比较,认为紫苞鸢尾应是由二倍体类群演化而来。还对鸢尾属内染色体数目的变化和核型进化的趋势进行了探讨。  相似文献

New data are presented on chromosome numbers for 36 species, two varieties, and two hybrids ofCirsium (Compositae). These include first reports forC. rhothophilum (2n = 34),C. andrewsii (2n = 32),C. crassicaule (2n = 32),C. quercetorum (2n= 32, 112),C. pascuarense (2n= 32),C. douglasii var.canescens (2n = 30, 34),C. hydrophilum (2n = 32),C. neomexicanum (2n = 30),C. cymosum (2n = 30, 34),C. acantholepis (2n= 34),C. radians (2n = 34), C.grahami (2n = 32),C. nigriceps (2n = 36),C. andersonii (2n= 32, 64),C. anartiolepis (2n = 34), andC. subcoriaceum (2n= 34). The published data on chromosome numbers of Eurasian and AmericanCirsium are summarized. In Eurasia, speciation has taken place primarily at the diploid level but is occasionally reinforced by polyploidy. The ancestral base number of 17 has been preserved in almost all species, and there is little evidence that reduction in chromosome number has played a significant role in speciation. In America speciation has proceeded exclusively at the diploid level, but the ancestral genome of 17 chromosomes has been retained in only about half of the species examined. In the remaining species, restructuring of the genome has occurred resulting in a reduction in number from 17 to 9 in extreme cases. Polyploidy, when seen, is of no significance. It is suggested that all species with greatly reduced numbers may represent products of a single reduction series.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine achene epidermal features of nine Carex species within sections Vesicariae and Lupulinae. Two major epidermal features are recognized in this study: the epidermal layers with one or two primary silicon bodies in each cell and the absence of any primary silicon body. Comparative data of achene morphology using SEM, and evidence compiled from previous investigations, support the placement of Carex retrorsa within section Vesicariae.  相似文献

We have found two chromosome levels (n = 10 and n = 20) in Spanish species ofReseda sect.Leucoreseda, four species on the first (R. undata, R. paui, R. suffruticosa, R. barrelieri), only one on the second level (R. alba). As already the species with n = 10 apparently behave as polyploids, we propose x = 5 as the original basic chromosome number for this section. The seed protein profile ofR. alba (2n = 40) reveals close relationships withR. undata (2n = 20), while the esterase isozymes suggest affinities withR. paui (2n = 20). Thus,R. alba can be regarded either as an autopolyploid fromR. paui or more likely as an allopolyploid fromR. paui andR. undata. Finally, the DNA values suggest a diploidization process inR. alba since its origin.  相似文献

Patterns of variation within and between Carex gynodynama and C. mendocinensis were investigated by studying allozyme and chromosome variation in natural populations and structural variation using herbarium specimens. Multivariate analyses of structural data demonstrated that C. gynodynama is clearly distinct from C. mendocinensis, and that sterile specimens similar to C. mendocinensis are intermediate between that species and C. gynodynama. The mean genetic distance between the two species, based on allozyme phenotypes at 17 enzyme-coding loci, was 0.22 ± 0.12. The sterile putative hybrids had the expected heterozygous pattern at three enzyme-coding loci at which the parental species were fixed for different alleles. Chromosome numbers are reported for the first time for both species and their putative hybrid. Carex mendocinensis had a different number in each of the three populations examined with n = 28, n = 29, or n = 30. Chromosome counts from one population of C. gynodynama revealed five plants with n = 25 and one with n = 26. Putative hybrids from this population exhibited irregular pairing at meiosis with 2n = ca. 55–57. Patterns of allozyme variation also suggest that C. mendocinensis has an outcrossing or mixed mating system but that C. gynodynama is an inbreeding species. Carex gynodynama exhibited very little variation in structure, habitat, or at the enzyme-coding loci examined, suggesting that it may have experienced a genetic bottleneck relatively recently. Carex mendocinensis had higher levels of variation both within and between populations at enzyme-coding loci and in structural features. This pattern of variation and a geographic distribution centered in serpentine areas of the Klamath–Siskiyou region, with disjunct smaller populations in serpentine areas farther south, suggest that C. mendocinensis once may have been a more widespread species.  相似文献
