The sample consists of 502 Jat-Sikh and 510 Bania females ranging in age from 20 to 80 years. Most of the measurements of head and face have shown a trend of increase up to fifth or sixth decade followed by a decrease, with intermittent fluctuations. Nose length and nose breadth have shown a trend of continuous increase up to the last age group. But this increase or decrease observed for these measurements during successive age-groups is significant only in few age-groups. On an average, the Jat-Sikh females possess significantly bigger heads, however some measurements like bigonial breadth, morphological upper facial length and nose breadth are significantly larger in Banias. The head is generally dolichocephal, with broad upper face and medium jugo-mandibular index in both the communities. The maximum frequency of Jat-Sikh females possess leptorhinae noses, whereas in Banias there is a transition from leptorhinae to mesorhinae noses.  相似文献

The data for the present study consist of 502 Jat-Sikh and 510 Bania females of Punjab (India), ranging in age from 20 to 80 years. The different components of the body i.e. fat, bone mineral, total body water and cell solids have been calculated from anthropometric measurements by applying different equations given by various investigators. While studying age changes in different components of the body, it is the fat component, which has undergone major fluctuations past maturity. It has increased significantly from age-group 20-29 to 40-49 in both Jat-Sikh and Bania females. A significant decrease in fat has been observed from age-group 60-69 to 70 +. The bone minerals have exhibited little changes with age. The total body water and cell solids show a significant increase from age-group 20-29 to 30-39, followed by a decrease in both the communities. The decrease in these two components is statistically significant from age-group 40-49 to 50-59 in Bania females only. While comparing the two communities it has been observed that bone minerals are significantly larger in Jat-Sikh females, and fat is significantly larger in Bania females except in the last two age-groups. The other two components i.e. total body water and cell solids show statistically non-significant differences in the two communities.  相似文献

The present paper reports the changes in body fat and lean body mass during 20 to 80 years. The data consist of 502 Jat-Sikh and 510 Bania females. The body fat has been calculated by applying Durnin & Womersley's (1974) formulae. The body fat reaches a maximum value of 20.06 kg at age-group 60-64 in Jat-Sikh females and 22.15 kg at age-group 45-49 in Bania females followed by a decline, reaching a value of 15.28 kg in Jat-Sikhs and 14.93 kg in Banias in the 70+ age group. The redistribution of fat with ageing has also been observed from skinfold measurements and changing body contours. The lean body mass reaches a maximum value of 35.64 kg in Jat-Sikhs and 36.22 kg in Bania at age-group 35-39 followed by a steady decrease reaching a value of 30.47 kg in Jat-Sikhs and 28.27 kg in Banias at age-group 70+. The females of the present study possess significantly lesser body fat and lean body mass as compared to American and British females. But in terms of percentages the Jat-Sikh females of the present study possess the largest lean body mass and the least body fat.  相似文献

During 1972 body measurements including height, weight, limb circumferences, skeletal diameters and skinfolds were taken on 100 unrelated and healthy Jat-Sikh men of 17 to 25 years of age, belonging to different areas of Punjab, India. The average height and weight of Jat-Sikhs is 170.4 cm and 54.5 kg, respectively. The mean Heath-Carter somatotype is 3.22-3.40-4.11. The majority of somatotypes is concentrated in endo-ectomorph and meso-ectomorph sectors of the somatochart. Comparisons with recently described data on females of the same area and population show significant sex differences in various body measurements except for the bicristal diameter. The females possess significantly more subcutaneous fat. For the rest of the measurements, the males have higher values. The Jat-Sikh males are comparable in height and weight to the contemporary pooled Punjabi, but are distinctly taller than the neighbouring populations of Himachal Pradesh and pooled all India samples. However, they are comparatively smaller and lighter as compared to European and American populations.  相似文献

A cross-sectional sample of 3136 scalp hair drawn from 392 individuals aged 10 to 60 years and belonging to the Bania (n = 201) and Brahmin (n = 191) caste groups of Punjab State of India were examined for diameters of hair shaft and medulla, scale count, medulla type, hair index, medullary index and scale-count index, employing standard procedures. The mean hair shaft diameter, medullary diameter, incidence of medullation and scale-count index was higher in males, while the mean scale count was higher in females. However, with a few exceptions, the gender differences were not statistically significant (p < 0.05). The Brahmins showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher mean values of hair shaft diameter and scale count than the Banias. The mean scale-count index was higher among the Banias. The fragmentary medulla was the most common medullary type among the Banias, while the continuous medulla was the most frequent type of medulla among the Brahmins. The frequency of medullation was significantly more among the Banias. On the average, the hair shaft diameter and diameter of medulla increased up to 30 years. Some age variations in medullation were noticed in both the caste groups. No clear age trend was noticeable in the scale count. By and large, the mean hair shaft diameter of the Banias was less than that of other populations. The mean hair shaft diameter of the Brahmin males was greater than that of the Banias, the Onges, and the Bengalees. The Brahmin females showed greater mean hair shaft diameter than that of the Banias, the Australian Aborigines, the Juangs and the Onges. Human scalp hair shows some age, gender and population variations in micro-morphological variables which have the potential of being useful for anthropological and forensic investigations.  相似文献

Morphometric analysis of compact femoral tissue was applied to a prehistoric population from Sudanese Nubia. Microradiographs of thin sections from below the lesser trochanter were examined. A total of 74 adults (40 females, 34 males) from the X-Group population (A.D. 350–550) were used to determine the underlying processes of bone remodeling in skeletal growth and maintenance. The relationship of bone turnover to the age of onset, patterning and frequency of cortical bone loss (osteoporosis) as a function of age and sex was examined. The cortical thickness, cortical area and formation/resorption frequencies were determined. Males exhibit a 4.9% net loss in cortical area, while females show a 10.7% loss. A substantial amount of female loss occurs in the third decade, with a slight gain in the fourth and a steady loss up to the sixth decade. These trends were further explored and refined histologically. The periosteal and endosteal frequencies for males show a variable but definite decrease in mineralization (i.e., increased numbers of osteons in the forming stage) and a slight increase in resorption. Third decade females show a marked difference with high frequencies of resorption spaces and forming osteons. It is suggested that in this population, stress related to childbearing and childrearing may be effecting the frequencies of formation foci and resorption spaces.  相似文献

In a cross-sectional study of growth, 5,260 healthy children of both sexes from Zagreb (Croatia) aged 2 to 18 years were measured. Six transversal body dimensions were studied: biacromial, transverse chest, antero-posterior chest, biiliocristal, bicondylar humerus and bicondylar femur diamters. A significant increase in body diameters has been observed until the age of 14 to 15 in girls and until the age of 16 in boys, showing that girls have a 1 to 2 years shorter period of growth. Compared to boys of the same age, they achieved larger amounts of final transversal bone size throughout the whole growth period. The most pronounced example was the knee diameter that in girls attained 95% of adult size as early as the age of 10. In both genders, the adult size is achieved earlier in widths of the extremities than in those of the trunk. The studied transversal body segments showed different growth dynamics, which is gender-specific. While sexual dimorphism in pelvic and shoulder diameters emerged with pubertal spurt, gender differences in chest and extremities' diameters started early in life. In all ages, boys had larger chest, elbow and knee diameters. In pubertal age boys gained a significantly larger biacromial diameter (from the age of 13 onwards), while girls exceeded them in biiliocristal diameter (from 10 to 14 years). The findings of gender differences were compared to those reported for other European populations and their growth patters were discussed comparing viewpoints.  相似文献

Measurements of the curvature of the lumbar spine are useful in the investigations of low back pain. It is unclear whether the degree of lumbar lordosis, sacral inclination and lumbosacral angulation are the same for all normal adults. Radiographic studies were carried out on the lumbar spines of subjects aged 9-61 years. Mean and 95% tolerance ranges of the values of lumbar lordosis, lumbosacral angle and sacral inclination for adult age groups up to the sixth decade are given. The results showed that all three parameters varied steadily with age. The pattern of changes differed in males and females. Females had greater angles than males. Sacral inclination appeared to be a more important determinant of the degree of lumbar lordosis. All three parameters showed a tendency to decrease after the sixth decade. The significance of the findings is discussed.  相似文献

This study explores changes with age in the medullary cavity in an area of the femur which is becoming of increasing clinical interest. It is based on measurements of medial-lateral and posterior-anterior radiographs of the proximal one-third of the right femur, below the greater trochanter. The study population consisted of 257 individuals from the Terry collection in the Smithsonian Institution and included Blacks and Whites, males and females, aged 20 to 90 years. Medullary cavity and external diameters were measured at 11 levels, beginning with a line drawn perpendicular to the linea aspera at the level of the inferior border of the greater trochanter. To correct for size differences, the interval between levels was set at one-fourth the individual femoral head diameter. The data were subjected to regression analysis and analysis of variance. Anterior-posterior medullary diameter is more highly correlated with age than medial-lateral diameter. Females show the greatest relative increase with age in both dimensions, especially at subtrochanteric levels, and they tend to have relatively larger medullary cavities than males at all ages. White males have relatively larger medullary diameters than Black males. Younger White females have relatively larger medullary cavities than Black females, but the latter reach parity with White females in middle age and show a greater overall percentage of medullary expansion.  相似文献

The tracheal system of harvestmen consists of two stem tracheae, which give rise to higher order tracheae that supply the extremities and internal organs. In this study, we used stereological morphometric methods to investigate diffusing capacities of the walls ('lateral diffusing capacity') of the tracheae of adult males and females of Nemastoma lugubre. Diffusing barriers of the tracheal walls tend to be thinnest (0.17-0.19 microm) for the smallest tracheae (inner diameter 0.5-2 microm). In other tracheal classes the diffusing barriers increase with increasing diameters. Calculation of the mass-specific diffusing capacity for oxygen (D(O2)) of the walls of all higher order tracheae revealed 10.57 microl min(-1)g(-1)kPa(-1) for the females (mean body mass 3.8 mg) and 25.23 microl min(-1)g(-1)kPa(-1) for the males (mean body mass 1.4 mg). In both animal groups, the main D(O2) (58-67%) lies in the tracheae with an inner diameter of 0.5-2 microm, but also tracheae up to an inner diameter of 20 microm allow gas exchange via the tracheal walls. Stem tracheae are of no importance for lateral diffusion. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the functional morphology of the tracheal system of harvestmen represents an 'intermediate state' between the tracheal system of insects in which gas exchange is focused on the distal portions and that of spiders, in which the walls of all tracheae serve in gas exchange.  相似文献

The aim of this large, cross-sectional study was to describe the age- and sex-related variations of the somatotype, employing Heath and Carter's method, in a Chuvasha population residing in a rural region in central Russia. The investigated sample included 802 males aged 18-89 years (mean 46.9) and 738 females aged 18-90 years (mean 48.6). We evaluated the age and sex differences by one-way ANOVA with somatotype components as dependent variables and sex or age groups as grouping variables. Sex differences of somatotypes appear to be the strongest for endomorphy, with generally higher values in women. Endomorphy in males remained virtually unchanged after 30 years of age, but endomorphy in females kept increasing up to the 6th decade, and then subsequently decreased. Virtually no differences were noted in mesomorphy and a very small difference in ectomorphy between males and females aged 18-30 years. A reduction of sexual dimorphism in all somatotype components after age 70 was also observed. The largest difference of all somatotype components appeared between age groups 18-30 and 31-40 years. Thereafter, somatotypes remained practically unchanged. Mesomorphy continued to increase until the 5th decade in both sexes, while in females, endomorphy continuously increased until their 6th decade. In the 7th and 8th decades, a decrease in mean values was observed. Mesomorphy and ectomorphy showed opposite age-related trends. Results of our study clearly suggest that in physique investigations, the somatotypes need to be studied in each sex separately, and in studies of young people, they need also to be adjusted to age.  相似文献

The relationship between the particle size of an inert silica dust, its up-take from different surfaces and the grooming behaviour of males, gravid females, and fifth and sixth instar nymphs of the German cockroachBlattella germanica (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) (L.) was investigated. The normal grooming behaviour of gravid females, nymphs and males differed according to sex and age. The gravid females and nymphs exhibited greater grooming activity than the males, especially of the antennae and the legs. Gravid females, nymphs, and adult males exhibited increased grooming activity after exposure to dust in the size range 0.5–63 μm, but there was no significant difference in grooming behaviour from the control when cockroaches were exposed to dust sizes greater than 70 μm. Antennal grooming by males was greater than leg grooming when exposed to all dust sizes, except size particles ranging 4.5–7.5 μm. A dust pick-up experiment indicated that the average amount of dust transferred toB. germanica is affected by particle size, the porosity of the treated surface, and the sex and age of the cockroaches. Gravid females picked up greater amounts of dust than fifth and sixth instar nymphs, which in turn picked up more dust than males. Silica dust particles (0.5–7.5 μm) were picked up more effectively than larger particle sizes, by all three categories, males, females and fifth and sixth instar nymphs of cockroach on all three test surfaces plastic, ceramic and unpainted plywood. Plywood was the least effective surface for transfer of dust, of all sizes, to males, females and nymphs.  相似文献

Tooth loss and tooth retention in adult South African Bantu-speaking Negroes were studied from data derived from 500 dry mandibles. The tribe, sex, and stated age of the specimens were available. Mandibles were equally distributed over the third to seventh decade of life. The presence of dental units was recorded and analysed within and between decade age groups. The mandibles carried a total of 5,459 dental units. Between the third and fourth decades of life and between the sixth and seventh decades, the reduction of the frequency of dental units was mild and statistically not significant. It was, however, severe and significant between the fourth and fifth, and the fifth and sixth decades. In the third-decade group, most teeth were found in the anterior region with a tendency to diminish in number posteriorly. After the third decade there was a definite persistence of first premolars and canines with significant tendency toward loss of teeth anterior and posterior to them. Only the incisors and third molars showed significant reduction in number from the third to the fourth decade. The reduction of all teeth was statistically significant later, until the sixth decade of life. Although there was loss of teeth from the sixth to the seventh decade, it was not significant for any of the homologous dental units. There is a possibility that some dietary differences existed between the older subjects (50–70 years old) and the younger ones (20–49 years old) which may have had some influence on the results.  相似文献

Summary An image cytometry program was applied to sections of the superficial masseter muscle of female and male 21-, 42- and 105-day-old rats. Lesser diameter and spatial distribution of more than 6000 muscle fibres were automatically measured in digital images from muscle sections stained for myofibrillar ATPase activity. In this muscle, only type 2A, 2B and 2C fibres were observed. At the three ages and in both sexes, 2A fibres were found to have the largest diameter and were the most frequent (> 54%). In the 21-day-old animals, females presented larger diameters than did males; in contrast, in the 105-day-old animals, the three fibre types were larger in males than in females. At all ages and in both sexes, type 2A occupied 32 to 80% more cross-sectional area than type 2B. Most images (98%) showed a random spatial distribution of their fibre types. All fibre types grew in diameter with age. The coefficient of variation of the diameter was age-independent and remained under 23%. The finding of an age-independent variable could have a practical application: an increase of the coefficient of variation (> 25%) can be considered as pathological, even without a perfect age-matched control.  相似文献

The mean fat cell diameter was determined from measurements of abdominal adipose cells, obtained during inguinal hernia repair, of 126 white and 95 black males ranging in age from 1 through 48 months of age. The mean diameters of black and white subjects did not differ significantly, suggesting that differences in fatness among adults of these two ethnic groups have their origin beyond the age range of this study. The mean fat cell diameter increased through the 6-8 month age group, decreased until the end of the first year, and then levelled off through 48 months of age. Comparison of this curve with those for the triceps, subscapular, abdominal, and suprailiac skinfolds of the same subjects showed generally parallel courses except for the triceps, which continued to increase in size after the means of fat cell diameters and the other skinfolds had levelled off. Our data indicate that changes in body fatness on the trunk at least in the first 4 years of life may be accounted for by changes in fat cell size.  相似文献

Longitudinal data for a twenty-year period are presented for a dimension of the human sphenoid bone as seen on postero-anterior roentgenograms of 22 males and 18 females (healthy, American-born Caucasoids). Birotundal diameter measured as the distance between the centers of the right and left foramen rotundum averaged near 32.0 mm for each sex at age 6 years. Individual increase in size to age 26 years ranged between 3.2 mm and 8.3 mm. There is no correlation between size at age 6 years and change between this age and early adulthood. For 54 males and 50 females at age 9 years, intercorrelations were obtained among six variables: birotundal diameter, head breadth, bizygomatic diameter, bigonial diameter, upper and loweer dental arch widths at the permanent first molars. The r's were nonsignificant or low positive (with the exception of upper-lower dental arch, r = 0.76). The results of this study are aligned with three previous studies of human cranial base width.  相似文献

This study examines the effects of delayed mating on two successive generations of blackheaded fireworm, Rhopobota naevana Hübner (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a pest of cranberry, Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton (Ericaceae). The first (spring) generation produces eggs that hatch soon after oviposition, whereas the second (summer) generation produces mostly diapause eggs. Unmated female and male moths were placed together on the first, second, fourth, sixth, or eighth day after emergence. In the first generation, incidence of mating was greatest in the 1-, 2-, and 4-day treatments then declined as female survival decreased. In the second generation, incidence of mating was lowest in the 1-day treatment and greatest in the 2-, 4-, and 6-day treatments. Most second generation females in the 6- and 8-day treatments survived to mate. The mean oviposition period was 2.6 days for first generation females and 4.1 days for second generation females. Fecundity of singly mated females in both generations declined as age at mating advanced, but the pattern of decline differed between generations. First generation females that were mated on the first or second day laid more eggs than those mated on the fourth, sixth, or eighth day, and the number of infertile eggs increased as age at mating advanced. Fecundity of second generation females declined more gradually and the number of infertile eggs was greatest for females mated on the first, sixth, or eighth day. A consequence of the marked decline in fecundity due to mating delays in the first generation was that mean fecundity of the entire group of first generation females was ca. 13% less than that of the group of second generation females. On cranberry farms, pheromone-mediated mating disruption can prevent or delay mating of blackheaded fireworm. If the frequency of disrupted (prevented and delayed) matings is similar in the two generations, fewer eggs will be laid in the first generation than in the second.  相似文献

Effect of aging on human adductor pollicis muscle function.   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The effect of aging on the voluntary and electrically evoked contractile properties of the human adductor pollicis muscle was investigated in 70 healthy male subjects aged 20-91 yr, 10 subjects for each decade. Maximum isometric voluntary force declined significantly (range of P values less than 0.001-0.05) after the age of 59 yr, dropping by the eighth decade to 57.6% of the level recorded in the second decade. A significant shift (P range less than 0.001-0.05) to the left of the frequency-force curve after ulnar nerve supramaximal stimulation at 1, 10, 20, 30, and 50 Hz was observed in the most elderly group (greater than 80 yr) compared with the youngest group (20-29 yr). Maximum relaxation rate dropped by 48.7% from the second to the eighth decade. The decrease became significant (P range less than 0.05-0.001) with the sixth decade. Isometric endurance, evaluated during 30 s of stimulation at 30 Hz, showed a linear (P less than 0.001) increase with age. Aged muscle is thus weaker, slower, and tetanized at lower fusion frequencies but, paradoxically, more resistant to static fatigue.  相似文献

Phenotype and gene frequency data are presented on the glyoxalase I (GLO) polymorphism in seven endogamous caste groups: Jat Sikh, Ramdasia Sikh, Ramgarhia Sikh, Khatri, Brahmin and Bania of Patiala district, and Jat Sikh of Faridkot district of Punjab, North-West India. Apparently, there is considerable heterogeneity in the frequency distribution of the GLO1 gene that varies from 0.168 in Bania to 0.287 in Brahmin. However, these differences are not statistically significant, and the overall GLO1 frequency in Punjab is well within the North Indian range.  相似文献

Gender and estrogen status are known to influence the incidence and severity of cerebrovascular disease. The vasoprotective effects of estrogen are thought to include both nitric oxide-dependent and independent mechanisms. Therefore, using small, resistance-sized arteries pressurized in vitro, the present study determined the effect of gender and estrogen status on myogenic reactivity of mouse cerebral arteries. Luminal diameter was measured in middle cerebral artery segments from males and from females that were either untreated, ovariectomized (OVX), or OVX with estrogen replacement (OVX + EST). The maximal passive diameters of arteries from all four groups were similar. In response to increases in transmural pressure, diameters of arteries from males and OVX females were smaller compared with diameters of arteries from either untreated or OVX + EST females. In the presence of N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, artery diameters decreased in all groups, but diameters remained significantly smaller in arteries from males and OVX females compared with untreated and OVX + EST females. After endothelium removal or when inhibition of nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase were combined, differences in diameters of arteries from OVX and OVX + EST were abolished. These data suggest that chronic estrogen treatment modulates myogenic reactivity of mouse cerebral arteries through both endothelium-derived cyclooxygenase- and nitric oxide synthase-dependent mechanisms.  相似文献
