A longitudinal study was carried out to identify the spectrum of intestinal parasites present in conventionally maintained BALB/c mice and Mastomys coucha and to determine the effects of concomitant schistosome infections on their parasite status. Six parasites were observed during the course of the study, namely the nematodes Aspiculuris tetraptera and Syphacia obvelata, Entamoeba muris and the flagellates Trichomonas muris, Spironucleus muris and Chilomastix spp. Although the 2 rodents shared common facilities, the overall prevalences of S. obvelata, T. muris and S. muris were significantly higher in M. coucha than BALB/c mice. BALB/c mice with concomitant schistosome infection had increased prevalences of E. muris, T. muris and S. muris. In M. coucha, in contrast, there were no significant increases in parasite prevalences. Infection intensities of T. muris and S. muris were significantly greater in M. coucha than BALB/c mice. Concomitant schistosome infection resulted in increased intensities of T. muris infection in BALB/c mice only. The influence of immune status in determining the susceptibilities of rodents to environmentally transmitted parasites is discussed.  相似文献

Data on the frequency, distribution and mean intensity of the helminth fauna recovered from outbred and inbred mice conventionally maintained in Brazilian animal houses, are reported. The oxyurid nematodes Syphacia obvelata and Aspiculuris tetraptera presented overall frequencies of 91.5% and 8.5%, respectively. The frequency of S. obvelata in animals of three groups out of the four investigated ranged from 9% to 74% and A. tetraptera from 17% to 83%, since animals of one of the groups were negative for helminths. Infections due to a single species were observed in 62% of the animals, compared to 16% related to associations. The frequency of single infections in each group varied from 58.6% to 100% whereas associations varied from 24.1% to 41.4%. The analysis of specific mean intensities showed that S. obvelata was represented by 13.35 to 66.58 specimens/host and A. tetraptera by 5.85 to 16.75 specimens/host.  相似文献

Sixty C57BL/6 male mice were treated with an anthelmintic for 2 weeks to free them of pinworms. They were then divided into six groups. Two groups were infected with Aspiculuris tetraptera, two groups with Syphacia obvelata, and two groups were left uninfected as controls. At intervals of 2 and 4 weeks after infection, the mice were tested for exploratory activity in a barriered field apparatus. Following the second test, each mouse was necropsied to determine presence of nematodes and to estimate worm burdens. Statistical analysis showed significant depression of exploratory activity in mice harboring S obvelata. No significant depression was found in those harboring A tetraptera.  相似文献

A survey was carried out of the levels of infection with Aspiculuris tetraptera and Syphacia obvelata in a wild house mouse population living in the Charles Clore Small Mammals Pavilion at the London Zoo in Regent's Park. The extent of infection with A. tetraptera is analysed according to the sex of the host. It is shown that the prevalence of infection was greater in male than in female mice and frequency distribution studies suggest that this is not only because fewer female mice become infected but also because females resist larvae more effectively than do males.  相似文献

The effects of selamectin were studied in mice naturally infected with the mites Myobia musculi, Myoceptes musculinus and Radfordia ensifera and with the oxyurid nematodes Aspiculuris tetraptera and Syphacia obvelata. The mice were divided into three treated and three control groups (n=9). Selamectin in the range 10-12.4 mg/kg was applied topically to the skin in a single spot at the base of the neck in front of the scapulae. The mice of treated and control groups were necropsied on the 4th, 7th and 21st day after the treatment. While selamectin was 100% effective in removing M. musculi, M. musculinus and R. ensifera by the seventh day, its effect against S. obvelata and A. tetraptera was 36.7% and 49.2%, respectively on the 21st day.  相似文献

A tabular checklist of the parasites of wild House Mice Mus domesticus is presented, with data on prevalence rates and geographic location. Parasites most often recorded are: Syphacia obvelata, Taenia taeniformis, Aspiculuris tetraptera, Hymenolepis diminuta and Trichuris maris. The near-global distribution of House Mice and their ability to survive in a wide range of conditions render House Mouse parasites ideal for the study of environmental influences on parasites and transmission of parasites to new hosts.  相似文献

A spray administration of ivermectin was evaluated for the treatment of pinworm infection in mice. In this study, a spray of 0.1% ivermectin injectable solution over the entire cage once a week, for three consecutive weeks (one cycle treatment), was effective in eradicating both Syphacia obvelata and Aspiculuris tetraptera from mice under experimental conditions. In addition, no acute toxicity was observed in 105 mothers or 687 neonates treated with ivermectin, indicating that ivermectin does not affect murine reproduction. Finally, we attempted to eradicate pinworms from infected mice in our institute using this method. Two cycles of treatment were administered, with a two-week pause between cycles, resulting in complete eradication for at least one year. Treating mouse colonies with spray ivermectin is inexpensive, safe, requires very little labor and is very effective at eradicating pinworms from mice.  相似文献

Microbiological monitoring on 128 inbred mouse foundation stocks consisted of common 10 inbred strains and inbred strains originated from outbred dd mice was performed by cooperation of 24 organizations. A total of 881 mice were divided into 647 conventional animals from 95 colonies and 234 barrier-sustained animals from 33 colonies. Three viral, one mycoplasmal, 6 bacterial, one fungal and 3 parasitic agents selected as monitoring microbes according to the proposed selection standards. Among conventional colonies, 84.2% were positive for at least one agent. The highest detection rate was 44.2% for S. obvelata, followed by P. pneumotropica and S. muris, P. aeruginosa, G. muris, Sendai virus, M. pulmonis, MHV and E. coli O115a, c: K (B). Of these agents, only one microbe, P. aeruginosa, was detected in barrier-sustained colonies (36.4%), thus the efficacy of barrier system for the microbiological quality control of the inbred mouse foundation stocks was actually demonstrated. The positive rates of MHV (6.3%) and Sendai v. (16.8%) were significantly low compared with those in experimental mouse colonies. Positivity for parasites was rather high and they were infested together with other pathogens in many cases. Thus parasites including G. muris, S. muris and S. obvelata were regarded as useful indicators to see microbiological contaminations in conventional mice. There observed no strain difference in susceptibility to pathogens except for C57BL/6 and AKR mice which seemed to be high antibody responders to MHV.  相似文献

Wild house mice, naturally infected with Aspiculuris tetraptera were segregated according to their weight into six age groups. The prevalence of infection and the mean worm burden of these mice were studied in the different age groups. The overall prevalence of infection was high (57% or more) in all the groups except the youngest. Mice acquired larvae soon after weaning; the highest larval burdens were reached in juvenile mice and the highest mature worm burdens, a group later, in mature mice. Older mice had fewer larvae and fewer mature worms. The mature worm burdens decreased but relatively slower than the larval burdens. It is suggested that eigher innate or acquired resistance could account for these observations.  相似文献

Though pinworm infestation has been prevalent since the early years of laboratory animal medicine, the genomes of these parasites have not yet been sequenced. The authors used high-fidelity polymerase chain reaction to amplify a large portion of the ribosomal gene complex of four pinworm species commonly found in lab rodents and rabbits (Aspiculuris tetraptera, Passalurus ambiguus, Syphacia muris and Syphacia obvelata). They determined DNA sequences for these complexes and carried out phylogenetic analysis. Using this information, the authors developed real-time molecular beacon assays for pinworm detection, comparing the new diagnostic approach with traditional methods such as perianal tape testing, fecal flotation and direct examination of intestinal content.  相似文献

Mice with a natural infection of Syphacia obvelata and Aspiculuris tetraptera were continuously medicated with 0.1% thiabendazole in the diet. No oxyurids were found in test animals after 24 days of treatment though control animals remained infected. Growth rates in treated animals increased. 2 generations of mice were studied and, although overall production fell by 1.45%, the use of this drug in total eradication of the worms is suggested.  相似文献

Hydrocortisone treated male and female mice, given a primary infection with Aspiculuris tetraptera, did not reject the worms during the third week of infection. Mice given hydrocortisone during the first week of infection had elevated worm burdens on day 10, suggesting that some worm loss was encountered during the anterior migration in control mice. Furthermore, this temporary period of treatment was sufficient totally to suppress rejection and to allow the parasite to persist until day 28. Methotrexate also significantly delayed rejection, but larval growth was retarded in treated mice. These results, it is suggested, add strength to the hypothesis that the loss of A. tetraptera in a primary infection in mice, is an immunological phenomenon.  相似文献

Genetics plays a substantial role in host resistance in many host-parasite interactions. We examined the prevalence of naturally acquired infection with Syphacia obvelata in a number of mouse strains housed in a non-barrier facility. These mice, which included cross-bred and congenic, inbred strains on various genetic backgrounds, differ in the loci for the immune function genes--major histocompatibility complex class II (MHCII), toll-like receptor 4 (Tlr4), and solute carrier family 11, member 1 (Slc11a1)--which allowed comparisons of the impact of these genes on resistance to pinworm infection. Male and female mice of various ages were sampled over an 18-month period; infection was determined by use of the cellophane tape test. Results indicated that mice that were MHCII+/+ had a significantly lower prevalence of infection than did mice that were MHCII-/-. Differences were not seen between male and female mice. Although MHCII+/+ mice had an age-associated decrease in infection prevalence, such decrease was not seen in MHCII-/- mice. In contrast, infection prevalence in mice with the normal Tlr4 gene (Tlr4(LPS-n/LPS-n)) gene did not differ significantly compared with that in mice that were homozygous for either the point mutation (Tlr4(LPS-d/LPS-d)) or deletion (Tlr4(LPS-del/LPS-del)) of that gene. Likewise, the presence (Sle11a1r/r) or absence (Slc11a1s/s) of functional alleles for Slc11a1 had no effect on the prevalence of infection with S. obvelata. In conclusion, presence of MHCII, but not Tlr4 or Slc11a1 significantly influences prevalence of naturally acquired infection with S. obvelata. These data justify further comprehensive analyses of the immune components that are involved in pinworm resistance.  相似文献

The proportion of the population carrying intestinal parasites (prevalence of infection) and the mean number of parasites per host within the host population (worm burden) for 312 Greywing Francolin Fran-colinus africanus were recorded on the Stormberg Plateau, eastern Cape Province, during April 1989-De-cember 1990. Most Greywing (86%) had helminths in their small intestine or caeca. Variation in levels of helminth infection (i.e. both prevalence and burdens) was independent of host sex. Nematodes were confined to the caeca where they were present in high numbers throughout the year with two peaks during June-August and November-January. The prevalence and worm burdens of nematodes were independent of host age Nematodes were more prevalent than cestodes. The prevalence and number of cestodes in the small intestine were highest during September-February and Faked during November-December. Levels of prevalence of cestodes were significantly higher in juvenile Greywing than in adults during the austral winter (May-July). The number of cestodes was consistently, but not significantly, higher in juveniles than in adults. Greywing body mass and population density were not significantly correlated with worm burdens.  相似文献

The ecological theory of adaptive radiation states that differences in ecological circumstances among local populations are the cause of divergence that leads to speciation. The role of parasites in contributing to divergence has seldom been considered, despite their ubiquity and known selective effects. The potential for parasites to contribute to divergence between closely related taxa was examined by quantifying the variation in parasite burdens between sympatric three-spined stickleback species ( Gasterosteus aculeatus complex) in two lakes in coastal British Columbia, Canada. In doing so the relative importance of geographical differences between lakes and trophic or microhabitat differences between species within lakes were evaluated. The entire metazoan parasite burdens of a total of 255 limnetic and benthic sticklebacks in Paxton and Priest lakes were assayed over five time points between spring and autumn. Despite their sympatric distributions, there were large differences in parasite burdens between benthic and limnetic sticklebacks within lakes and these were consistent across both lakes. In particular, limnetics suffered greater burdens of the parasites Schistocephalus solidus and Diplostomum scudderi and benthics had much higher burdens of parasitic glochidia (mollusc larvae). Parasite burdens also differed quantitatively between lakes, but in general such differences were less pronounced than those between the stickleback species. The documented differences in parasite burdens between stickleback species have potential to contribute to divergent selection on life history, immunological and secondary sexual characters that could contribute to reproductive isolation between the species.  相似文献

In four experiments, mice harbouring an average 50, 76 or over 200 Schistosoma japonicum female worms were not resistant when challenged six to eight weeks after infection. The female worms from these single sex infections were stunted and immature (average length 4.6 mm) and induced no overt pathology in the host. Male worm burdens of 60, 135 or 140 also induced little or no resistance to challenge in the host. The males from these single sex infections were fully grown for their age (average length 9 mm) and burdens of 135 or 140 induced distended hepatic portal veins and marked deposition of pigment in the livers of infected mice.  相似文献

In most host-parasite systems, variation in parasite burden among hosts drives transmission dynamics. Heavily infected individuals introduce disproportionate numbers of infective stages into host populations or surrounding environments, causing sharp increases in frequency of infection. Parasite aggregation within host populations may result from variation among hosts in exposure to infective propagules and probability of subsequent establishment of parasites in the host. This is because individual host heterogeneities contribute to a pattern of parasite overdispersion that emerges at the population level. We quantified relative roles of host exposure and parasite establishment in producing variation in parasite burdens, to predict which hosts are more likely to bear heavy burdens, using big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) and their helminths as a model system. We captured bats from seven colonies in Michigan and Indiana, USA, assessed their helminth burdens, and collected data on intrinsic and extrinsic variables related to exposure, establishment, or both. Digenetic trematodes had the highest prevalence and mean abundance while cestodes and nematodes had much lower prevalence and mean abundance. Structural equation modeling revealed that best-fitting models to explain variations in parasite burden included genetic heterozygosity and immunocompetence as well as distance to the nearest water source and the year of host capture. Thus, both differential host exposure and differential parasite establishment significantly influence heterogeneous helminth burdens, thus driving population-level patterns of parasite aggregation.  相似文献

Mice immunized with Fasciola hepatica antigens are protected to a challenge exposure with Schistosoma mansoni cercariae. This protection is manifested in a 28–54% reduction in worm burdens of the immunized mice over controls. The protective antigens could be isolated by antibody affinity chromatography and react with an antiserum to S. mansoni. These antigens, when used to immunize mice, result in 50–60% reduction in worm burdens over controls. One protective antigen has been isolated which when used alone or in combination with a B-cell adjuvant such as polyadenylic-polyuridylic acid (poly (AU)) results in 56–81% reduction in worm burdens over controls. The complexity of the F. hepatica adult worm antigens was demonstrated by Laurell crossed immunoelectrophoresis. Crossreactivity with antisera to S. mansoni and S. japonicum and the presence of one common antigen between the two genera have been demonstrated.  相似文献

The maturation of Schistosoma mansoni was studied in mice exposed to various sublethal doses of radiation. Although the treatment of mice with 500 rads of radiation prior to infection did not alter parasite maturation, doses in excess of 500 rads led to a reduction in worm burden. This could not be attributed to a delay in the arrival of parasites in the hepatic portal system. Worms developing in mice treated with 800 rads commenced egg-laying about 1 wk later than worms in intact mice, and the rate of egg deposition appeared to be lower in irradiated hosts. The data demonstrate that exposure of C57BL/6 mice to doses of radiation in excess of 500 rads impairs their ability to carry infections of S. mansoni. The findings do not support the hypothesis that primary worm burdens in the mouse are controlled by a host immune response.  相似文献

A model is proposed to describe the accumulation of sealworm parasites (Pseudoterranova decipiens, Nematoda, Ascaridoidae) in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). The model predicts the total amount of food eaten by a fish to reach its size. In young fish growth is linear in time and average parasite burdens are predicted to increase with the cube of the average length of the fish divided by its growth rate. An analysis of worm burdens in cod caught by the commercial fishery in the Firth of Clyde (Strathclyde, Scotland) between 1964 and 1970 illustrates how average parasite abundances at age, length, or fixed time of the year can be compared. It is concluded that exposure did not vary significantly over these years. Extensive apparent inter-annual variations in worm burdens of cod newly recruited to the fishery are well explained by differences in the age composition of cod catches.  相似文献
