1.?Although a growing body of evidence supports that olfaction based on chemical compounds emitted by birds may play a role in individual recognition, the possible role of chemical cues in sexual selection of birds has been only preliminarily studied. 2.?We investigated for the first time whether a passerine bird, the spotless starling Sturnus unicolor, was able to discriminate the sex of conspecifics by using olfactory cues and whether the size and secretion composition of the uropygial gland convey information on sex, age and reproductive status in this species. 3.?We performed a blind choice experiment during mating, and we found that starlings were able to discriminate the sex of conspecifics by using chemical cues alone. Both male and female starlings preferred male scents. Furthermore, the analysis of the chemical composition of the uropygial gland secretion by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed differences between sexes, ages and reproductive status. 4.?In conclusion, our study reveals for first time that a passerine species can discriminate the sex of conspecifics by relying on chemical cues and suggests that the uropygial gland secretion may potentially function as a chemical signal used in mate choice and/or intrasexual competition in this species.  相似文献

Although male heterogamety is the generally accepted method of sex determination in Chironomus, female heterogamety has been reported for some strains of Chironomus tentans. Some new data, combined with a reassessment of the published data, indicate that the proposal of female heterogamety rests on inconclusive data, while male heterogamety provides an adequate explanation of sex determination in C. tentans. A cross which would unambiguously discriminate between male and female heterogamety in these strains is proposed, although it is considered unlikely that female heterogamety exists in this species.  相似文献

In some animals, males evolve exaggerated traits (e.g. the peacock''s conspicuous tail and display) because of female preference. Recently Enquist and Arak presented a simple neural network model for a visual system in female birds that acquires the ability to discriminate males of the correct species from those of the wrong species by training. They reported that the trained networks were attracted by ''supernormal stimuli'' where there was a greater response to an exaggerated form than to the images used as the correct species for training. They suggested that signal recognition mechanisms have an inevitable bias in response, which in turn causes selection on signal form. We here examine the Enquist and Arak model in detail. A three-layered neural network is used to represent the female''s mate preference, which consists of 6 by 6 receptor cells arranged on a regular square lattice, ten hidden cells, and one output cell. Connection weights of the network were modified by a genetic algorithm, in which the female''s fitness increases if she accepts a conspecific male but decreases if she accepts a male of a different species or a random image. We found that: (i) after the training period the evolved network was able to discriminate male images. Female preference evolves to favour unfamiliar patterns if they are similar to the images of the correct species (generalization); (ii) the speed and the final degree of learning depended critically on the choice of the random images that are rejected. The learning was much less successful if the random images were changed every generation than if 20 random images were fixed throughout the training period; (iii) the male of the same species used for training achieved the highest probability of being accepted by the trained network. Hence, contrary to Enquist and Arak, the evolved network was not attracted by supernormal stimuli.  相似文献

Parasitoid females are known to preferentially allocate female eggs to hosts with the higher resource value, usually leading to oviposition of female eggs in larger hosts and male eggs in smaller hosts. For koinobiont parasitoids, if male and female hosts are of equal size at time of oviposition, but differ in size in later developmental stages, the sex of the host could be used to indicate future resource value. Using parasitoids of the braconid genus Asobara, which are larval parasitoids of Drosophila, it is shown that parasitoids emerging from female hosts are larger than those from male hosts. Given this difference in resource value, ovipositing females should preferentially allocate female eggs to female hosts. An alternative strategy would be to decrease the difference in resource value between male and female hosts by castrating male hosts. The primary sex ratio of A. tabida in their two main host species does not differ between male and female hosts. In contrast to A. tabida, A. citri is known to partially castrate male hosts, but this does not decrease the size difference between male and female hosts. As in A. tabida, there is no difference in sex allocation to male and female hosts in A. citri. Despite the clear difference between the resource value of male and female hosts, these parasitoid species do not seem to make optimal use of this difference. They may not be able to discriminate between host sexes or, alternatively, there is a presently unknown fitness disadvantage to ovipositing in female hosts.  相似文献

A new species (Acartia hongi) of Acartia (family Acartiidae)predominating in the Korean coastal waters of the Yellow Seais described. This species closely resembles Acartia bifilosa,from which it can be easily distinguished by the co-occurrenceof the following morphological characters: the absence of rostralfilaments in both genders; the terminal spine on the femalefifth leg toothed only on the inner side; the first exopodalsegment of the male right fifth leg with a long seta; the distalsegment of the male left fifth leg with a rod-like appendage.Its distribution was discussed in comparison with two siblingspecies, Acartia omorii and Acartia hudsonica.  相似文献

In primates, faces provide information about several characteristics of social significance, including age, physical health, and biological sex. However, despite a growing literature on face processing and visual attention in a number of primate species, preferences for same‐ or opposite‐sex faces have not yet been examined. In the current study, we explore the role of conspecific sex on visual attention in two groups of capuchin monkeys. Subjects were shown a series of image pairs on a Tobii Pro TX300 eye tracker, each depicting an unfamiliar male and an unfamiliar female face. Given the behavioral evidence of mate choice in both sexes, we hypothesized that capuchins would preferentially attend to images of unfamiliar conspecifics of the opposite sex. Our alternative hypothesis was that capuchins would preferentially attend to same‐sex individuals to assess potential competitors. Our results provide support for our alternative hypothesis. When comparing attention to each stimuli type across sexes, females spent significantly larger percentages of time than males looking at female photos, whereas males spent significantly larger percentages of time than females looking at male photos. Within each sex, females looked for significantly larger percentages of time to female versus male images. Males also looked for larger percentages of time to same‐sex images, though not significantly. To our knowledge, these data are the first to demonstrate significant sex‐biased attentional preferences in adult primates of any species, and suggest that, for capuchins, potential competitors garner more attention than potential mates. In addition, our findings have implications for studies of visual attention and face processing across the primate order, and suggest that researchers need to control for these demographic factors in their experimental designs.  相似文献

The sex ratio of bitterling hybrids (subfamily: Acheilognathinae) is often likely to be biased toward males. Artificial hybridization was carried out in 10 species of bitterlings (three genera) in order to elucidate the masculinization mechanism of hybrids. Tanakia himantegus never produced viable F1 hybrids with other species, while hybrids of most other species were viable. In terms of sex ratio and fertility, hybrids were clearly divided into two groups: congeneric Tanakia hybrids and others. Both male and female congeneric Tanakia hybrids were fertile. The sex ratio was nearly 1:1 in all groups of Tanakia hybrids. Except for the congeneric Tanakia hybrids, sterile males appeared predominantly in groups of hybrids in which females were very rare but remained fertile. Sterile intersexes were also observed in five hybrid groups: T. lanceolata (female) x Acheilognathus cyanostigma (male), Rhodeus uyekii (female) x T. lanceolata (male), A. rhombeus (female) x T. lanceolata (male), A. rhombeus (female) x T. limbata (male), and A. tabira tabira (female) x A. cyanostigma (male). In the development of male-predominant hybrids, although hybrid and control (parental species) hatching and survival rates do not differ, no females appeared in hybrids, contrary to the controls. Taking the female heterogametic sex-determining system (ZW) and the phylogenetic relationship of bitterlings into consideration, the masculinization mechanism of hybrids in bitterlings can be explained by the interaction of two sex chromosomes, derived from each parental species. The basic genetic sex in bitterlings is male (ZZ) and the derivative is female (ZW). When parental species are related, the sex phenotype of hybrids coincides with the genetic sex. However, when the parental species differ, the sex phenotype of the ZW genotype is reversed to become male by an abnormal interaction between the Z and W chromosomes. The rare appearance of females and intersexes in male-predominant hybrids might be due to complete or partial functional expression of the W chromosome.  相似文献

We asked whether odor discrimination abilities are sexually dimorphic in mice and, if so, whether the perinatal actions of estradiol contribute to these sex differences. The ability to discriminate different types of urinary odors was compared in male and female wild-type (WT) subjects and in mice with a homozygous-null mutation of the estrogen synthetic enzyme, aromatase (aromatase knockout; ArKO). Olfactory discrimination was assessed in WT and ArKO male and female mice after they were gonadectomized in adulthood and subsequently treated with estradiol benzoate. A liquid olfactometer was used to assess food-motivated olfactory discrimination capacity. All animals eventually learned to distinguish between urinary odors collected from gonadally intact males and estrous females; however, WT males as well as ArKO mice of both sexes learned this discrimination significantly more rapidly than WT females. Similar group differences were obtained when mice discriminated between urinary odors collected from gonadally intact vs. castrated males or between two non-social odorants, amyl and butyl acetate. When subjects had to discriminate volatile urinary odors from ovariectomized female mice treated with estradiol sequenced with progesterone versus estradiol alone, ArKO females quickly acquired the task whereas WT males and females as well as ArKO males failed to do so. These results demonstrated a strong sex dimorphism in olfactory discrimination ability, with WT males performing better than females. Furthermore, female ArKO mice showed an enhanced ability to discriminate very similar urinary odorants, perhaps due to an increased sensitivity of the main olfactory nervous system to adult estradiol treatment as a result of perinatal estrogen deprivation.  相似文献

Mate choice is mediated by many components with the criteria varying across the animal kingdom. Chemical cues used for mate attractiveness can also reflect mate quality. Regarding the gregarious species Armadillidium vulgare (isopod crustacean), we tested whether individuals can discriminate conspecifics at two different levels (between sex and physiological status) based on olfactory perception. Tested conspecifics were individuals of the same or opposite sex, with the females at different moult stages. We found that the attractiveness of individuals was mediated by short-distance chemical cues and tested individuals were able to discriminate and prefer individuals of the opposite sex. Moreover, male preference to female increased during their moulting status as they matured. Males were particularly more attracted by females with appearing white calcium plates, which corresponds to the beginning of their higher receptivity period. These differences in attractiveness due to sex and physiological status are likely to shape the composition of aggregates and facilitate mate finding and optimize the reproductive success for both males and females. Thus aggregation pheromones could be linked to sex pheromones in terrestrial isopods.  相似文献

This study demonstrates that ferrets can use variations in odours from anal sac secretions as a communication system. Odour preference tests showed that ferrets can discriminate between male and female ferret anal sac odours, between strange and familiar, familiar and their own, and fresh and 1-day-old odours. They did not discriminate between fresh and 2-h-old odours, nor did male ferrets discriminate between the odours of oestrous and anoestrous females. Ferrets were more attracted to the odours of the opposite sex than to those of their own sex. When faced by an opponent, male ferrets were more aggressive in the presence of their own rather than their opponent's odour, and less aggressive with their opponent's odour than with that of a known, dominant animal's odour. These results are consistent with both a sex attraction role and a territorial defence role for anal sac odours. A scent-matching mechanism for territorial defence is supported, although a neighbour-neighbour recognition/avoidance mechanism cannot be rejected. Gas chromatography revealed sexually and individually distinct profiles of volatile compounds in anal sac extracts, but no consistent seasonal trends. Females had high concentrations of 2,3-dimethylthietane and/or 3,4-dimethyl-1,2-dithiolane. Males usually had high concentrations of indole. 2-Propylthietane was an important constituent in most individuals. These differences in concentration were significant and could provide an olfactory recognition system of sex and individual identity.  相似文献

Sex-specific sequence variability of the amelogenin gene had been observed in a variety of mammalian species. In our study, the suitability of the amelogenin gene for sex determination in different species of the family Bovidae was examined. Based on a sequence insertion/deletion characteristic for X- and Y-specific amelogenin (AMELX and AMELY), PCR amplification on male and female genomic DNA from domestic and wild bovine species, sheep and goat, consistently displayed a sex-specific pattern. Thus, the amelogenin amplification by PCR proved to be a reliable method for sex determination not only in domestic and wild species of the tribe Bovini, but also in the related species sheep and goat. Sex determination using the amelogenin-based assay can be performed with at least 40 pg of genomic DNA. The assay enables the investigation of small amounts of DNA from meat, hair, bones, and embryo biopsies to identify species and sex for a number of applications in animal production, forensics, population research, and monitoring within the family Bovidae. Sequence comparison of the amplified amelogenin gene region specific for male and female animals from domestic and wild bovide species revealed further sequence variations within and between sexes as well as between species. Sequence variations in the AMELX gene can be applied to discriminate Bos and Bison individuals from other bovine species, and also from sheep and goat.  相似文献

1. Which sex should care for offspring depends on the cost and benefits of the behaviour for each sex. Understanding these differences between the sexes is a fundamental step to explain the evolution of animal societies, but it is often difficult to quantify them empirically. A possible approach is to investigate two closely related species that perform a very similar type of care but in which the caring sex differs. 2. Using field and laboratory data, we estimated the benefits and costs of parental care in two species of assassin bugs with very similar ecologies: Rhinocoris tristis, which has exclusive paternal care, and Rhinocoris carmelita, which has exclusive maternal care. 3. In both species, the main benefit of care was a reduction in parasitism and predation of eggs. Guarding R. tristis males consumed eggs (filial cannibalism), and thus managed not to lose weight, but R. carmelita females paid the full energetic cost of care. Guarding male R. tristis incurred survival costs relative to non‐guarding male and female conspecifics. 4. Very high population density and female preference for males already guarding eggs (a preference previously recorded in fish) minimised the promiscuity cost of paternal care in R. tristis, explaining the difference in care pattern between the two species.  相似文献

This paper presents a method for direct identification of fungal species solely by means of digital image analysis of colonies as seen after growth on a standard medium. The method described is completely automated and hence objective once digital images of the reference fungi have been established. Using a digital image it is possible to extract precise information from the surface of the fungal colony. This includes color distribution, colony dimensions and texture measurements. For fungal identification, this is normally done by visual observation that often results in a very subjective data recording. Isolates of nine different species of the genus Penicillium have been selected for the purpose. After incubation for 7 days, the fungal colonies are digitized using a very accurate digital camera. Prior to the image analysis each image is corrected for self-illumination, thereby gaining a set of directly corresponding images with respect to illumination. A Windows application has been developed to locate the position and size of up to three colonies in the digitized image. Using the estimated positions and sizes of the colonies, a number of relevant features can be extracted for further analysis. The method used to determine the position of the colonies will be covered as well as the feature selection. The texture measurements of colonies of the nine species were analyzed and a clustering of the data into the correct species was confirmed. This indicates that it is indeed possible to identify a given colony merely by macromorphological features. A classifier (in the normal distribution) based on measurements of 151 colonies incubated on yeast extract sucrose agar (YES) was used to discriminate between the species. This resulted in a correct classification rate of 100% when used on the training set and 96% using cross-validation. The same methods applied to 194 colonies incubated on Czapek yeast extract agar (CYA) resulted in a correct classification rate of 98% on the training set and 71% using cross-validation.  相似文献

A linkage map was constructed for the honey bee based on the segregation of 365 random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers in haploid male progeny of a single female bee. The X locus for sex determination and genes for black body color and malate dehydrogenase were mapped to separate linkage groups. RAPD markers were very efficient for mapping, with an average of about 2.8 loci mapped for each 10-nucleotide primer that was used in polymerase chain reactions. The mean interval size between markers on the map was 9.1 cM. The map covered 3110 cM of linked markers on 26 linkage groups. We estimate the total genome size to be ~3450 cM. The size of the map indicated a very high recombination rate for the honey bee. The relationship of physical to genetic distance was estimated at 52 kb/cM, suggesting that map-based cloning of genes will be feasible for this species.  相似文献

Facial movement has received little attention in studies of human attractiveness, yet dynamic displays are an important aspect of courtship in many species. This experiment investigated whether facial movement could be used to identify sex, and whether the ease of identification was associated with attractiveness. We removed shape cues to sex by applying movement from individual faces to a standardised facial model. Participants were able to distinguish between male and female animations of this model at levels above chance. Furthermore, there was a positive association between ease of sex identification and attractiveness for female, but not male, faces. Analysis of facial movement suggested several behaviours that are more frequent in women than men (blinking, tilting, nodding, shaking, and amount of movement). Although some of these behaviours may be cues to sex identification, none alone was directly linked to attractiveness. Our findings suggest that feminine motion is attractive in female faces, but sexually recognisable movement has no clear influence on male attractiveness, in agreement with work on static faces employing composite images.  相似文献

A very rapid hemolysis was found to be caused by active oxygen species produced by a hypoxanthine-xanthine oxidase system with very low concentrations of hypoxanthine. The addition of superoxide dismutase or catalase inhibited the hemolysis, indicating that O2- and H2O2 participate in this system. The extent of erythrocyte hemolysis was found to depend on the sex of the human donor. The change in phospholipid composition before and after hemolysis in human erythrocytes from donors of each sex was compared by thin layer chromatography. A significant decrease in phosphatidylethanolamine content and a concomitant increase in altered phospholipid fraction were observed in erythrocytes from male donors, suggesting that these erythrocytes were easily attacked by active oxygen species to produce modified phosphatidylethanolamine.  相似文献

Sex discriminating genetic markers are commonly used to facilitate breeding programs in economically and ecologically important animal and plant species. However, despite their considerable economic and ecological value, the development of sex markers for kelp species has been very limited. In this study, we used the recently described sequence of the sex determining region (SDR) of the brown algal model Ectocarpus to develop novel DNA-based sex-markers for three commercially relevant kelps: Laminaria digitata, Undaria pinnatifida and Macrocystis pyrifera. Markers were designed within nine protein coding genes of Ectocarpus male and female (U/V) sex chromosomes and tested on gametophytes of the three kelp species. Seven primer pairs corresponding to three loci in the Ectocarpus SDR amplified sex-specific bands in the three kelp species, yielding at least one male and one female marker for each species. Our work has generated the first male sex-specific markers for L. digitata and U. pinnatifida, as well as the first sex markers developed for the genus Macrocystis. The markers and methodology presented here will not only facilitate seaweed breeding programs but also represent useful tools for population and demography studies and provide a means to investigate the evolution of sex determination across this largely understudied eukaryotic group.  相似文献

Photographs of three species of calanoid copepods were digitized,binarized and edited to remove the debris present in the imagesand to simulate different degrees of segmentation. Twentyeightsegmented images of the three species were generated after pre-processingto obtain their digital Fourier transform or diffraction pattern.Cluster analysis was carried out for the images of the wpepodsand for their diffraction patterns to determine which set ofimages discriminated genus, species and sex of the selectedorganisms.Ihe dendrograms of the diffraction patterns had morepower of discrimination and 50% less variability. Premise of the study: The development of biased sex ratios in dioecious plant species has been ascribed to either (1) factors influencing differential adult mortality of male and female plants or (2) factors acting at an early life stage that determine seed sex ratio or seedling survival. ? Methods: To discriminate between these two competing hypotheses, we surveyed sex and age of 379 individuals from five species of the genus Salix across 11 alpine valleys in the southwest Yukon. ? Key results: We observed uniformly female-biased sex ratios of approximately 2:1 across all adult age cohorts and patch sizes of the five willow species. No spatial variation in sex ratio occurred that could be associated with site-specific characteristics such as elevation or aspect. ? Conclusions: Our results indicate that the female-biased sex ratios in the alpine willow species investigated in this study are not a consequence of ecological processes acting on established adult plants. The sex ratio is instead determined at an early life stage by a mechanism that remains unknown.  相似文献

A new strategy was developed to analyse the polymorphism of the genome of Brucella spp. All species of the Brucella genus contain several copies (between 10 and 40) of an insertion sequence, IS6501 (known also as IS711). The position of copies of this insertion sequence appears to differ in each species and this can be used to discriminate between them. A new polymerase chain reaction test, called IS-anchored-PCR (IS-an-PCR) was developed. It was based on a combination of a primer bound on the sequence of IS6501 with a second primer chosen arbitrarily. The patterns obtained reflect the position of the insertion sequence in the genome. This method can be used to identify Brucella and to discriminate between different species, strains within a species and between the vaccine strain B19 and the corresponding 'wild-type' B. abortus A1.  相似文献
