Summary Photosynthetic and water relations characteristics of small juvenile and large reproductive plants were investigated during one growing season for four woody species native to Red Butte Canyon, Utah, USA: Acer negundo, Artemisia tridentata, Chrysothamnus nauseosus, and Salix exigua. For all species, juvenile plants differed from reproductive plants in at least one of the following characters: water potential, stomatal conductance, photosynthetic rate, or water-use efficiency. Late in the growing season, mortality occurred within juvenile plants (apparently due to a lack of water), but not within reproductive plants. The observed differences between juvenile and reproductive classes are discussed in terms of environment, development, and mortality selection.  相似文献

Summary Byttneria aculeata (Sterculiaceae), a subcanopy liane with a shrubby juvenile form has two distinct leaf color morphs in juvenile plants- a given juvenile has plain green leaves or leaves with whitish variegation. Both forms occur together in the forest and in clearings; however, the variegated morph is more common in open sites, and the plain morph predominates in the forest. Percent variegation per leaf for variegated plants increased from closed to open sites. Measurements of growth support the idea that variegation is favored in open habitats. Within a given habitat, rate of herbivory by leaf miners on a given morph increases with increasing relative frequency of that morph; however, at a given relative frequency, the variegated morph is less heavily attacked than is the plain morph when it occurs elsewhere at that same frequency.  相似文献

The harvesting of Onion Grass (Romulea rosea) corms by flocks of Sulphur‐crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) is well known. Individual birds and large flocks feed on the weed in pastures, grasslands and recreational turf. Flocks of Sulphur‐crested Cockatoo were observed feeding on Onion Grass at seven sites along the Maribyrnong River at Keilor, Victoria. Flock size and feeding habits were noted, as were the depth of corms, the time taken to remove corms from the ground and the number of eaten and lifted but uneaten corms. From the data collected, it was estimated that an individual bird can extract and eat about 200 plants per hour and that even a small flock can consume several thousand plants in a feeding session. Corms were typically within 20 mm of the soil surface and were removed primarily by the cockatoo with its beak, but the left foot was sometimes used to excavate the corm from the soil. Flock feeding sessions lasted from about 0.5 to 2.5 hours, but feeding by individual or pairs of birds was often shorter. Plants that had been removed from the soil appeared to have intact corms, but all that was left were the outer scales. Of the plants removed from the soil, only 6% had intact corms attached. The removal of large numbers of Onion Grass plants could impact on their population numbers over time if there was repeated annual harvesting.  相似文献

1. Although several species of Peucetia (Oxyopidae) live strictly in association with plants bearing glandular trichomes worldwide, to date little is known about whether these associations are mutualistic. 2. In this study we manipulated the presence of Peucetia flava on the glandular plant Rhynchanthera dichotoma in the rainy and post‐rain season, to test the strength of its effects on leaf, bud, and flower damage and plant reproductive output. In addition, we ran independent field experiments to examine whether these sticky structures improve spider fidelity to plants. 3. Peucetia suppressed some species of foliar phytophages, but not others. Although spiders have reduced levels of leaf herbivory, this phenomenon was temporally conditional, i.e. occurred only in the post‐rain but not in the rainy season. Floral herbivory was also reduced in the presence of spiders, but these predators did not affect plant fitness components. 4. Plants that had their glandular trichomes removed retained fewer insects than those bearing such structures. Spiders remained longer on plants with glandular trichomes than on plants in which these structures had been removed. Isotopic analyses showed that spiders that fed on live and dead labelled flies adhered to the glandular hairs in similar proportions. 5. Spiders incurred no costs to the plants, but can potentially increase individual plant fitness by reducing damage to reproductive tissues. Temporal conditionality probably occurred because plant productivity exceeded herbivore consumption, thus dampening top‐down effects. Specialisation to live on glandular plants may have favoured scavenging behaviour in Peucetia, possibly an adaptation to periods of food scarcity.  相似文献

Shade coffee plantations can be important refuges for epiphytes, but are not suitable for all species. To test if the performance of early life stages, often the most sensitive phase, is responsible for the species’ ability to colonize coffee plantations, we compared growth and mortality rates of three epiphytic bromeliad species that differ in their ability to colonize secondary arboreal vegetation by transplanting juveniles to trees in forests, and shade trees in old and young coffee plantations in Central Veracruz, Mexico. Growth rates of Tillandsia viridiflora, generally restricted to forests, and Tillandsia juncea, an early colonizer, were related to the pattern of the species occurrence among habitats with growth rates of T. viridiflora being generally higher in forests and growth of T. juncea higher in coffee plantations. Performance of the third species, Tillandsia heterophylla, which is intermediate in habitat preference, was not clearly related to habitat. No difference in growth rates was found between plants transplanted in wet or dry season. In general, mortality in transplanted bromeliads was relatively low (mostly < 5% per month). In coffee plantations herbivory had a severe effect during part of the wet season, when mortality in young coffee plantations reached between 15 and 24 percent per month. Given the substantial contribution of herbivory to the mortality of juvenile plants and the significant differences between habitats, herbivory may be co‐limiting the colonization of young coffee plantations by some epiphytic bromeliads.  相似文献

Colchicum autumnale L. is a monocotyledonous geophyte with hysteranthous leaves, i.e. flowering and leaf growth occur in different time periods. Because after the starch, the second prominent storage compound of corm is represented by proteins, we were interested in nitrogen remobilisation during the annual life cycle of C. autumnale. In this context the content of soluble and insoluble proteins were measured in parallel with determination of some exo-and endopeptidase activities. Our results indicate that the continual proteolysis occurs in both mother and new daughter corms during the whole life-cycle of the plant. L-Ala-aminopeptidase and trypsin-like endopeptidase were the most active peptidases in both mother and daughter corms. As the protein level of mother corm did not change significantly during the development of the future above-ground part under the soil surface (the first, autumnal developmental stage), the developmental profile of nitrate reductase activity was estimated followed by evaluation of total nitrogen and amino acid contents. Significant activity of root nitrate reductase was detected in the roots only in the second, vernal stage. Our results showed that the stored proteins constituted a relevant nitrogen source partly required by the growth processes of the late autumnal stage, but mainly by the intensive growth of leaves and reproductive structures during the second, photosynthetically active stage of the life-cycle.  相似文献

This study determined the temporal patterns of herbivory on Handroanthus ochraceus (Cham.) Mattos (Bignoniaceae) along a successional gradient in a seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF) in southeastern Brazil. We assessed the diversity of free-feeding herbivore insects (sap-suckers and leaf-chewers), leaf herbivory rates, leaf nitrogen content, phenolic compounds, and spider abundance through the rainy season in three different successional stages (early, intermediate, and late). Sampling was conducted in December, at the beginning of the rainy season (with fully expanded young leaves), February (mid-aged leaves), and April, at the end of rainy season (old leaves). Fifteen reproductive trees of H. ochraceus were sampled per successional stage in each month of sampling. Herbivore diversity was highest in the early stage of succession, but herbivory rates were highest in the intermediate and late stages. This result was probably related to differences in herbivore community composition and leaf quality across successional stages. The highest herbivore abundance was found in April in the early successional stage. In addition, we found low levels of herbivory in the intermediate and late successional stages in the second half of the rainy season. For each successional stage, leaf nitrogen content decreased through the rainy season, whereas the concentration of phenolic compounds increased. For the intermediate and late successional stages, the temporal changes that took place as the rainy season progressed corroborated the following hypotheses postulated for SDTFs: (1) both the abundance of chewing insects and herbivory rates decreased, (2) the abundance of natural enemies (i.e., spiders) increased, and (3) leaf quality decreased. These results suggest that the described herbivory patterns are robust for advanced successional stages (intermediate and late) of the SDTFs, but may not apply to early successional stages of these forests.  相似文献

The forest herb Corydalis cava is the only known species with a corm where tissue is added annually as a layer on the outside, and where the older central parts rot away, i.e. the corm becomes an expanding sphere. This growth pattern creates energetic problems for ageing plants. However, older corms change their shape in a way that saves biomass. Growth of corm with age was here modelled introducing different corm traits saving mass and thus postponing death. The largest corm in the study patch had a volume of 60 ml. If such a corm had remained a solid sphere, its age would be estimated to be 8.3 years. In reality, 4 year old corms became hollow and later an opening appeared in their basal part. In addition, corms ≥ 7 years became more conical. A conical corm with a volume of 60 ml was estimated to be 15.9 years old. Volume and shape of corm thus made it possible to age individual plants. The age structure of the plants in the study patch was described and discussed in relation to the overall dynamics of the metapopulation. The patch consisted of a few strong age classes (from 5 to 7 years old). Any recruiting juvenile age classes were almost completely missing.  相似文献

A longitudinal study of nematode infection in chimpanzees was conducted between 1989 and 1994 on the M group chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania during two annual dry and rainy season periods and a third rainy season. Chemical and physical antiparasite properties of medicinal plant use against the strongyle nematodeOesophagostomum stephanostomum have recently been reported at Mahale. Here, the incidence of nematode infections were analyzed for seasonal trends to elucidate the possible influence of parasite infection on previously reported seasonality of medicinal plant use and to test the hypothesis that the use of these plants is stimulated byO. stephanostomum. The number of chimpanzees infected byO. stephanostomum was significantly higher in the rainy season than in the dry season of both 1989–1990 and 1991–1992. However, the incidence ofTrichuris trichura andStrongyloides fuelleborni showed no seasonality. Reinfection of individuals byO. stephanostomum occurred in synchrony with annual variation in rainfall: there was a sharp rise in the occurrence of new infections per individual within one to two months after the beginning of the first heavy rains of the season. This pattern coincides with the reproductive cycle of this nematode species.O. stephanostomum (95%) infections were associated significantly more frequently with medicinal plant use than eitherT. trichiura (50%) orS. fuelleborni (40%) infections. These observations are consistent with previous reports for the increased use of these plants during the rainy season and are consistent the hypothesis that medicinal plant use is stimulated byO. stephanostomum infection.  相似文献

The seasonal allocation and efficiency of biomass and resources(starch, soluble carbohydrates, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Zn, Fe,Mn and Cu) within and between the constituent plant parts ofSparaxis grandiflora subspecies fimbriata , a deciduous, synanthousgeophyte, are described. The sequential production of roots,leaves and a new daughter corm, with fruit production phasedin during the development of the daughter corm, results in continualtransfer of resources when the plant is not dormant. The newdaughter corm serves as the major sink for the allocation ofdry matter and resources during the vegetative, reproductiveand senescent periods. The parent corm is the major source ofresources in the early stages of the vegetative period. Theamount of resources allocated to the reproductive structureswas comparatively low when compared with that allocated to vegetativeplant parts. The corms have highly flexible storage capacitiesfor a variety of nutrients, particularly the better conservednutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and carbohydrates.The dynamic patterns for the majority of the resources revealedhigh allocation when metabolic activity was also highest. Efficientrecovery or recycling of important resources from senescingorgans results in a similar or greater allocation to the daughtercorm than the amount that was present in the parent corm ofthe previous growth season. Phenotypic plasticity can play an important role in colonization and survival of plants in an environmentally fluctuating habitat. The primary aim of this study was to determine the influence of level of abiotic (soil moisture and nutrient availability) and biotic (density and herbivory) factors on phenotypic plasticity in the number and proportional mass allocation to the heteromorphic dehiscent upper (high dispersal, low dormancy) and indehiscent lower (low dispersal, high dormancy) siliques of individuals of the cold desert winter annual/spring ephemeral Diptychocarpus strictus derived from different seed morphs. Plants produced from seeds sown in an experimental garden were subjected to different levels of soil moisture, nutrient supply, density and simulated herbivory. Mass allocated to vegetative and reproductive components was measured and number of upper and lower siliques counted. Except for number ratio of upper: lower siliques under nutrient supply, levels of the four treatments resulted in significant variation in total plant mass, reproductive mass, number of siliques (upper and lower), number and mass of each silique morph, individual seed mass, upper/lower silique ratio and mass allocation to each organ in an individual. In favorable environments, the upper/lower silique ratio was relatively high, while in unfavorable environments it was relatively low. The relative allocation to upper and lower siliques was significantly negatively correlated, suggesting that allocation to upper siliques in good growth conditions occurred at the expense of allocation to lower siliques. This appears to be the first report on the effect of herbivory on diaspore morph ratio in heterocarpic plants and one of only a very few on the effect of density on morph ratio in this group. In D. strictus, stressful vs nonstressful growth conditions caused a shift in the ratio of heteromorphic diaspores, which themselves are assumed to be bet‐hedging.  相似文献

Summary In this 15 month investigation I experimentally demonstrated that sapling Cecropia aff. obtusifolia in lowland western Ecuador grow more vigorously when occupied by the ant Azteca constructor than when the ants have been removed. Thus the interaction is directly beneficial to Cecropia juveniles. The difference in growth is associated with differences in herbivory and vine cover. Removal of ants significantly increases nocturnal Coleoptera herbivory on unoccupied plants. In contrast to the influence on beetle numbers, Azteca are ineffective against Homoptera and cecidomyiid gall flies. Although ant-occupied saplings had less chewing herbivore damage throughout the study, the ants were more effective protectors in the dry season than in the rainy season, when herbivore pressure increased. In addition to reducing herbivory, Azteca efficiently remove vines from occupied saplings.  相似文献

The ability of the summer flowering Gladiolus dalenii Van Geel and the winter flowering G. tristis L. to form corms in vitro was investigated. G. dalenii spontaneously formed corms on a shoot induction medium consisting of the basal medium of Murashige & Skoog (1962) with up to 2.0 mg l-1 benzyladenine (BA), 3% sucrose and solidified with 2 g l-1 Gelrite®. The effect of different BA and sucrose concentrations as well as different temperatures on in vitro corm production of G. tristis was further investigated. The best production of shoots per explant was achieved on a medium containing 0.5 to 1.0 mg l-1 BA, sucrose concentrations of 6 to 9% and cultured at 15°C. The best corm production was achieved at the same temperature and with the same medium with the exception that BA was omitted from the medium. To test the effect of the osmotic potential on the formation of shoots and corms, sucrose was substituted by mannitol at various concentrations. Sucrose proved to be essential for both shoot and corm production and the use of mannitol had no beneficial effect.  相似文献

Perennial, polycarpic herbs can respond to herbivory either by (1) regrowth in the same season in order to compensate for lost reproductive structures or by (2) postponing reproduction until the following growing season. We tested these response patterns with the perennial umbellifer Pimpinella saxifraga by simulating flower herbivory and shoot grazing both in the field and in a common garden experiment. In the field, both simulated flower herbivory and grazing effectively suppressed current reproduction, whereas no statistically significant effects of previous-year treatments on growth or reproduction were found in the following year. In the common garden, in the first year the species fully compensated for simulated flower herbivory in vegetative parameters but seed set was reduced by 26%. After 2 years of flower removal, the plants overcompensated in shoot and root biomass by 47 and 46%, respectively, and compensated fully in reproductive performance. Simulated grazing resulted in 21% lower shoot biomass in the first season, but the root biomass was not affected. In the second season the root biomass increased by 43% as compared to the control plants. However, regrowth following simulated grazing resulted in a significant delay in flowering with the consequence that the seed yield of fertile plants was reduced by 55% as compared to the control plants. These results suggest that in resource-rich garden conditions P. saxifraga may immediately repair injuries caused by flower herbivory, but repairs more extensive shoot injury less successfully. Delayed phenology decreases the benefits of immediate repair. In resource-poor conditions, the benefits of regrowth can be negligible. Accordingly, in our field population, the plants postponed their reproduction until the following year in response to simulated grazing and frequently in response to flower removal. When the plants gain very little from regrowth, the costs of reproduction would select for postponed reproduction in response to injury.  相似文献

In semi‐arid climates, plant population dynamics are strongly influenced by the amount and temporal distribution of rainfall. We monitored a population of the tree species Cordia oncocalyx (Boraginaceae) for 24 months in the dry thorny woodland of semi‐arid northeastern Brazil, to investigate which life‐history traits allow this tree to be locally dominant. We used horizontal life tables and a Lefkovitch matrix and tested for relationships among demographic parameters of seedling, infant, juvenile, immature, virginile and reproductive ontogenetic stages with rainfall and canopy openness. Germination and recruitment occurred in the rainy months, and dry‐season mortality occurred only in seedlings (76% and 100%, first and second years, respectively) and infants (3% and 6%). Juveniles showed greater height growth under more open canopies (Spearman correlation coefficient = 0.24), suggesting that light availability influences growth. The population growth rate was λ = 1.0336, and the highest sensitivity occurred in the infant‐juvenile transition. Our results show light as a restrictive growth factor for plants in the juvenile stage and confirm the strong influence of rainfall on the dynamics of trees in a seasonally dry environment. The formation of a persistent seed bank with germination concentrated at the rainfall onset but spreading over the rainy season are strategies that hedge bets before establishment. The formation of a bank of infants, which can resume growth as soon as there is water, hedges bets after establishment. We attribute the positive population growth rate of Cordia oncocalyx to survival strategies allowing bet‐hedging both before and after establishment.  相似文献

Summary This study examines the pattern of reproduction and factors that limit the maternal reproductive output in the self-incompatible annual, Lesquerella gordonii. Greenhouse experiments showed that fruits do not abscise and they mature if they contain at least one fertilized (outcrossed) ovule. Field studies showed that flowering increased to a peak and then fell off rapidly, while seed production/fruit decreased through the season. Pollen addition did not increase the number of fruit or seeds per fruit, suggesting that fruit and seed production are not pollinator limited. Addition of water increased fruit and seed production by extending the life of the plant, by increasing the number of stalks which flowered, and by increasing the number of seeds per fruit. This indicates that fruit and seed production are resource limited. Fruits are relatively inexpensive as compared to seeds as over 93% of the water in fruits is contained in the seeds. Fifty-three percent of the plants were lost to herbivory as were 64.6% of the fruits on the remaining plants, indicating that herbivory also limited fruit and seed production. It is hypothesized that high fruit set coupled with variable seed set in L. gordonii is an adaptive response to unpredictable, variable resource levels, and high herbivory risk.  相似文献

Abstract

Fruit and seed set were obtained in the triploid Crocus sativus (saffron) either by hand crossing with pollen of the diploid C. cartwrightianus or by free pollination. The morphology of the capsules and seeds was similar in both Crocus species. The embryo is comparatively small, whereas the endosperm is formed of numerous layers of cells with hemicellulose-thickened walls and a cytoplasm containing few lipid and protein reserves. Seed germination gave rise to a white prophyll from which a green leaf emerged. At the base of this leaf, a small corm without tunics developed, which, after leaf desiccation, became dormant. These corms sown separately in pots were again capable of growth and emitted a single long green leaf. Vegetative development of new corms was similar in the diploid and hybrid saffron plants. In sites of past saffron cultivation the beds were found to contain degenerated corms and corms at different development stages. The absence of fruit and seed set in emasculated and self- and out-pollinated plants suggests that saffron does not form apomictic embryos.  相似文献

Abstract

The seasonality of maturation of gametangia and development of sporophytes of the autoicous moss Octoblepharum albidum Hedw. was investigated in a remnant of the Atlantic Forest in Pernambuco State, Brazil. Two populations of this species were sampled monthly for a period of 2 years. The results obtained were similar in both populations and are presented together. The average number of antheridia produced per perigonium was 13.4 and of archegonia per perichaetium was 6.7. The frequency of juvenile, immature and mature gametangia was considerably greater during the rainy season, when there was also an increase in fertilized archegonia. Sporophytes began their development during the rainy season and continued into the dry season, when the spores were dispersed. The reproductive pattern of this species presented a marked seasonality,apparently greatly influenced by rainfall.  相似文献

Dormancy was induced during storage of Liatris spicata cormsgrown in Israeli summer conditions, but plants left in soilcontinued vegetative growth. Corms of winter-grown plants sproutedfreely. Treatment with GA3 restored both sprouting and floweringin summer-grown corms, but in winter corms GA2 was effectiveonly after corms were stored at low temperature. All the plantsflowered after 4 weeks at 2 °C and GA3 treatment. Storage organ induction in vitro can limit the loss of plants during acclimatisation, and can substantially reduce the time to flower following acclimatisation. An initial experiment lasting 3 months showed that of the four Watsonia species investigated, only Watsonia vanderspuyiae was capable of consistent corm formation. Consequently, a second study investigating light, temperature (10, 15, 20 and 25°C), carbohydrates (sucrose at 3, 6, 9 or 12%) and plant growth regulators [α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), N 6-benzylaminopurine (BA), abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellic acid 3 (GA3), paclobutrazol (PAC) and methyl jasmonate (MeJa)], lasting 6 months, was performed. Abnormal corms were produced by W. lepida in response to ABA, but normal corms formed at lower temperatures (10 and 20°C). In contrast, corms were produced in most treatments of W. vanderspuyiae, with BA, PAC and ABA being the only treatments that inhibited corm induction. By examining the product of the proportion corm induction multiplied by corm mass, four treatments superior to the control (20°C, 1 mg l−1 GA3, 6% sucrose and continuous light) were selected for a factorial design experiment in W. vanderspuyiae. After 3 months, treatments were ranked according to their product. The best four combinations of these four factors all contained GA3 and were incubated at 20°C, suggesting synergistic interactions between gibberellins and reduced temperature.  相似文献
