The evolution of parental care is beneficial if it facilitates offspring performance traits that are ultimately tied to offspring fitness. While this may seem self‐evident, the benefits of parental care have received relatively little theoretical exploration. Here, we develop a theoretical model that elucidates how parental care can affect offspring performance and which aspects of offspring performance (e.g., survival, development) are likely to be influenced by care. We begin by summarizing four general types of parental care benefits. Care can be beneficial if parents (1) increase offspring survival during the stage in which parents and offspring are associated, (2) improve offspring quality in a way that leads to increased offspring survival and/or reproduction in the future when parents are no longer associated with offspring, and/or (3) directly increase offspring reproductive success when parents and offspring remain associated into adulthood. We additionally suggest that parental control over offspring developmental rate might represent a substantial, yet underappreciated, benefit of care. We hypothesize that parents adjust the amount of time offspring spend in life‐history stages in response to expected offspring mortality, which in turn might increase overall offspring survival, and ultimately, fitness of parents and offspring. Using a theoretical evolutionary framework, we show that parental control over offspring developmental rate can represent a significant, or even the sole, benefit of care. Considering this benefit influences our general understanding of the evolution of care, as parental control over offspring developmental rate can increase the range of life‐history conditions (e.g., egg and juvenile mortalities) under which care can evolve.  相似文献

Echolocation is energetically costly for resting bats, but previous experiments suggested echolocation to come at no costs for flying bats. Yet, previous studies did not investigate the relationship between echolocation, flight speed, aerial manoeuvres and metabolism. We re-evaluated the 'no-cost' hypothesis, by quantifying the echolocation pulse rate, the number of aerial manoeuvres (landings and U-turns), and the costs of transport in the 5-g insectivorous bat Rhogeessa io (Vespertilionidae). On average, bats (n = 15) travelled at 1.76 ± 0.36 m s?1 and performed 11.2 ± 6.1 U-turns and 2.8 ± 2.9 ground landings when flying in an octagonal flight cage. Bats made more U-turns with decreasing wing loading (body weight divided by wing area). At flight, bats emitted 19.7 ± 2.7 echolocation pulses s?1 (range 15.3-25.8 pulses s?1), and metabolic rate averaged 2.84 ± 0.95 ml CO? min?1, which was more than 16 times higher than at rest. Bats did not echolocate while not engaged in flight. Costs of transport were not related to the rate of echolocation pulse emission or the number of U-turns, but increased with increasing number of landings; probably as a consequence of slower travel speed when staying briefly on ground. Metabolic power of flight was lower than predicted for R. io under the assumption that energetic costs of echolocation call production is additive to the aerodynamic costs of flight. Results of our experiment are consistent with the notion that echolocation does not add large energetic costs to the aerodynamic power requirements of flight in bats.  相似文献

There is long-standing conflict between genealogical and developmental accounts of homology. This paper provides a general framework that shows that these accounts are compatible and clarifies precisely how they are related. According to this framework, understanding homology requires both (a) an abstract genealogical account that unifies the application of the term to all types of characters used in phylogenetic systematics and (b) locally enriched accounts that apply only to specific types of characters. The genealogical account serves this unifying role by relying on abstract notions of ‘descent’ and ‘character’. As a result, it takes for granted the existence of such characters. This requires theoretical justification that is provided by enriched accounts, which incorporate the details by which characters are inherited. These enriched accounts apply to limited domains (e.g. genes and proteins, or body parts), providing the needed theoretical justification for recognizing characters within that domain. Though connected to the genealogical account of homology in this way, enriched accounts include phenomena (e.g. serial homology, paralogy, and xenology) that fall outside the scope of the genealogical account. They therefore overlap, but are not nested within, the genealogical account. Developmental accounts of homology are to be understood as enriched accounts of body part homology. Once they are seen in this light, the conflict with the genealogical account vanishes. It is only by understanding the fine conceptual structure undergirding the many uses of the term ‘homology’ that we can understand how these uses hang together.  相似文献

Summary Ecologists often standardize data through the use of ratios and indices. Such measures are employed generally to remove a size effect induced by some relatively uniteresting variable. The implications of using the resultant data in correlation and regression analyses are poorly recognized. We show that ratios and indices often provide surprising and spurious results due to their unusual properties. As a solution, we advocate the use of randomization tests to evaluate hypotheses confounded by spurious correlations. In addition, we emphasize that identifying the appropriate null correlation is of utmost importance when statistically evaluating ratios, although this issue is frequently ignored.  相似文献

Living species of mammals, crocodiles and most species of birds exhibit parental care, but evidence of this behaviour is extremely rare in the fossil record. Here, we present a new specimen of varanopid 'pelycosaur' from the Middle Permian of South Africa. The specimen is an aggregation, consisting of five articulated individuals preserved in undisturbed, close, lifelike, dorsal-up, subparallel positions, indicating burial in 'life position'. Two size classes are represented. One is 50% larger than the others, is well ossified, has fused neurocentral sutures and is distinguished by a coat of dermal ossifications that covers the neck and shoulder regions. We regard this individual to be an adult. The remaining four skeletons are considered to be juveniles as they are approximately the same size, are poorly ossified, have open neurocentral sutures and lack dermal ossifications. Aggregates of juvenile amniotes are usually siblings. Extant analogues of adult and juvenile groupings suggest that the adult is one of the parents, leading us to regard the aggregation as a family group. The Late Middle Permian age of the varanopid family predates the previously known oldest fossil evidence of parental care in terrestrial vertebrates by 140 Myr.  相似文献

This article consists of a critical application of recent theory of nationalism to the unusual case of Mauritius. It is a poly‐ethnic and poly‐religious society whose inhabitants neither share a mythical distant past nor consider themselves culturally identical, but where nation‐building has nevertheless been moderately successful since the late 1960s. Through an examination of the processes of institutional and cultural nation‐building in the island, it is argued that the current Eurocentric view of the nation (notably as a culturally homogeneous imagined community) must be modified to fit cases like this one. This paper explains the objectives of organising the symposium ‘The Other North Sea’. A major goal is the submission of the conclusions and content of this symposium to the North Sea Task Force, an initiative of the Second Conference on the Protection of the North Sea (London, 1987) which is responsible for preparing a Quality Status Report on the North Sea by mid-1993. The conclusions and recommendations of the symposium are summarised and presented to the North Sea Task Force in connection with the preparations for the 1993 Quality Status Report. The paper stresses the need to subdivide the North Sea into areas of ecological entity and underlines the advantages of using diatom and meiofauna assemblages as indicators for present and past environmental actors in sediment conditions. A plea is also made for the promotion of research to improve understanding of disturbance of sensory perception and behaviour as an ecologically relevant early warning signal. The major role of fisheries in inducing changes of seabird and harbour porpoise populations is highlighted.  相似文献

It has been argued that male parental care provides direct benefits to females and therefore should be under sexual selection. Given this, we expect signals that honestly indicate the quality of care to be favoured by selection. One such potential signal is care itself. Fish have several features that make them excellent model systems for studying the evolution and dynamics of parental care. We use the flagfish, Jordanella floridae , as a model to evaluate these general ideas. Males of this species guard, clean and fan empty nests and then eggs. Females prefer males that fan more (1) before spawning and (2) when eggs are newly received. When single males and females were paired, males that fanned and visited their nests more prior to spawning were more likely to be mated. Furthermore, among successful males, rates of fanning in the first day after spawning were correlated with the number of eggs received in the future (but not current egg numbers). We then considered whether these two putative signals were correlated and whether males that fan more in these contexts actually have higher egg survivorship. We found no correlation between nest fanning rates before and after spawning and neither 'signal' was predictive of variation in egg survivorship among mated males. We further considered whether pre‐spawning fanning rates were predictive of hatching success in an experiment in which single males were allowed to establish nests and provided eggs. We found little evidence that fanning is an honest signal of care quality and discuss alternative explanations. In particular, we discuss patterns of care elaboration in light of our results.  相似文献
