The zooplankton community of a flooded opencast sulphur mine was investigated during two years. The complicated physical and chemical relationships in this water-filled pit caused an atypical plankton assemblage. At the time of the investigation 20 species of rotifers, 6 of Cladocera, and 8 species of Copepoda were found. A single Ostracod and Chaoborus flavicans were also noted in the samples. Usually the epilimnion was monopolised by rotifers whereas the hypolimnion had a more diversified assemblage of rotifers, cladocerans and copepods. The result of clustering analysis indicated that each predator was associated with its own group of prey. Discrimination analyses showed weak seasonal differences in the zooplankton and three zones in the vertical profile – epilimnetic, upper hypolimnetic and anaerobic. Principal component analysis reduced the chemical parameters to the main contributors of conductivity (the main anions and cations) plus toxic sulphide and hydrogen sulphide. The animals were classified by the first two components into two groups: cold stenotherms and medium-sized filtrators, such as Bosmina longirostris. A specific analysis of vertical profiles generated five variants of diel vertical migrations. When time–space distributions of the plankters were analysed the highest numbers of different species were usually in different times and depths. The epilimnion was inhabited by small fishes and was dominated by rotifers but was free from C. flavicans which inhabited the cold hypolimnion, together with the remaining invertebrate predators (copepods and Asplanchna).Chaoborus and the other invertebrate predators participated more evenly in the contributions of species to the total density. In the presence of invertebrate predators the structure of the rotifer population shifted from soft-bodied species to spined or fast-moving species. When the predation pressure was too strong, as in the hypolimnion, the soft-bodied species were, in practice, absent. When the pit was in an oligotrophic state the hypolimnion population was composed of up to 60–90% rotifers. When the trophic state shifted to mesotrophy, the proportion of cladocerans increased.  相似文献

The paper describes a year-round limnoplanktonic study of a freshwater pond in West Bengal, India. Always predominant over zooplankton, phytoplankton demonstrates three peaks. The relationships between pH and phytoplankton, between phosphate and green algae and between rotifers and diatoms are significant. The role of physico-chemical factors in determining different planktonic population is discussed. The multiple correlation between several physico-chemical factors and phytoplankton percentage is not significant.  相似文献

To propose a concept of their mutual diversity, twenty-nine permanent shallow floodplain pools and oxbows in the river Lužnice floodplain were analysed for area, depth, shape, flooding, and shading by terrestrial vegetation, and sampled in all seasons for their water chemistry, phytoplankton composition and biomass, and zooplankton composition. The sites are regularly flooded, eutrophic, and often shaded by surrounding vegetation. Cryptophyceae, Chrysophyceae and Euglenophyceae dominated the phytoplankton, while Cyanophytes were rare. Within the rich zooplankton assemblage (63 species), cladocerans and rotifers dominated. Correlation matrices and multivariate analyses indicated that shaded and relatively deeper sites had lower oxygen saturation and higher concentrations of PO4–P and NH4–N. Shade and relative depth correlated negatively with phytoplankton biomass and number of phytoplankton taxa, and positively with Cryptophytes and large cladocerans—thus indicating poor mixing, poor light availability and low fish pressure on herbivores. Decomposition of leaf litter increased oxygen consumption, while shade from terrestrial vegetation restricted photosynthesis and decreased oxygen production. Larger sites were more species-rich in phytoplankton and supported Euglenophyceae, green algae and rotifers.  相似文献

In this paper we present the effects of environmental factors and zooplankton food pressure on phytoplankton in the restored man-made Maltański Reservoir (MR). Two methods of restoration: biomanipulation and phosphorus inactivation have been applied in the reservoir. Nine taxonomical groups of phytoplankton represented in total by 183 taxa were stated there. The richest groups in respect of taxa number were green algae, cyanobacteria and diatoms. The diatoms, cryptophytes, chrysophytes, cyanobacteria, green algae and euglenophytes dominated in terms of abundance and/or biomass. There were significant changes among environmental parameters resulting from restoration measures which influenced the phytoplankton populations in the reservoir. These measures led to a decrease of phosphorus concentration due to its chemical inactivation and enhanced zooplankton grazing as a result of planktivorous fish stocking. The aim of the study is to analyse the reaction of phytoplankton to the restoration measures and, most importantly, to determine the extent to which the qualitative and quantitative composition of phytoplankton depends on variables changing under the influence of restoration in comparison with other environmental variables. We stated that application of restoration methods did cause significant changes in phytoplankton community structure. The abundance of most phytoplankton taxa was negatively correlated with large zooplankton filter feeders, and positively with zooplankton predators and concentrations of ammonium nitrogen and partly of phosphates. However, restoration was insufficient in the case of decreasing phytoplankton abundance. The effects of restoration treatments were of less importance for the abundance of phytoplankton than parameters that were independent of the restoration. This was due to the continuous inflow of large loads of nutrients from the area of the river catchment.  相似文献

1. The major aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that nutrient enrichment and the introduction of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), an exotic omnivorous filter‐feeding fish, operate interdependently to regulate plankton communities and water transparency of a tropical reservoir in the semi‐arid northeastern Brazil. 2. A field experiment was performed for 5 weeks in 20 enclosures (9.8 m3) to which four treatments were randomly allocated: tilapia addition (F), nutrient addition (N), tilapia and nutrient addition (F + N) and a control treatment with no tilapia or nutrient addition (C). A two‐way repeated measures anova was undertaken to test for time, tilapia and nutrient effects and their interactions on water transparency, total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations, phytoplankton biovolume and zooplankton biomass. 3. Nutrient addition had no effect except on rotifer biomass, but there were significant fish effects on the biomass of total zooplankton, copepod nauplii, rotifers, cladocerans and calanoid copepods and on the biovolume of total phytoplankton, large algae (GALD ≥ 50 μm), Bacillariophyta and Zygnemaphyceae and on Secchi depth. In addition, we found significant interaction effects between tilapia and nutrients on Secchi depth and rotifers. Overall, tilapia decreased the biomass of most zooplankton taxa and large algae (diatoms) and decreased water transparency, while nutrient enrichment increased the biomass of rotifers, but only in the absence of tilapia. 4. In conclusion, the influence of fish on the reservoir plankton community and water transparency was significant and even greater than that of nutrient loading. This suggests that biomanipulation of filter‐feeding tilapias may be of importance for water quality management of eutrophic reservoirs in tropical semi‐arid regions.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The POTAMON model [Everbecq E. et al . (2001) Water Research , 35 , 901] has been used to simulate the effect of benthic bivalves (mainly Dreissena polymorpha ) on the phytoplankton and zooplankton in a lowland Western European river (the Moselle). Here we use a modified version of the POTAMON model with five categories of phytoplankton ( Stephanodiscus , Cyclotella -like, large diatoms, Skeletonema and non-siliceous algae) to model filter-feeding effects of benthic bivalves in the Moselle. Zooplankton has been represented in the model by two categories, Brachionus -like and Keratella -like rotifers.
2. According to density estimates from field surveys (Bachmann V. et al . (1995) Hydroécologie Appliquée , 7 , 185, Bachmann V. & Usseglio-Polatera P. (1999) Hydrobiologia , 410 , 39), zebra mussel density varied among river stretches, and increased through the year to a maximum in summer. Dreissena filtration rates from the literature were used, and mussels have been assumed to feed on different phytoplankton categories (but less on large and filamentous diatoms) as well as on rotifers.
3. The simulations suggest a significant impact of benthic filter-feeders on potamoplankton and water quality in those stretches where the mussels are abundant, their impact being maximal in summer. Consequently, different plankton groups were not affected to the same extent, depending on their period of development and on indirect effects, such as predation by mussels on herbivorous zooplankton.
4. A daily carbon balance for a typical summer shows the effect of benthic filter-feeders on planktonic and benthic processes: the flux of organic matter to the bottom is greatly enhanced at high mussel density; conversely, production and breakdown of organic carbon in the water column are reduced. Mussel removal would drive the carbon balance of the river toward autotrophy only in the downstream stretches.  相似文献

To clarify spatial and seasonal differences in net plankton and zoobenthos in Lake Tonle Sap, Cambodia, quantitative surveys were carried out at 14 stations in the north and south basins in high- and low-water seasons during 2003–2005. In the phytoplankton communities, a diatom Aulacoseira granulata dominated throughout the lake in the high-water seasons, while blue-green algae, mostly composed of Microcystis, surpassed other algae in the low-water season when the lake water was very turbid and the Secchi disk readings were only a few centimeters. In the low-water seasons, a bloom of floating blue-green algae occurred everywhere, especially prominent in the coastal areas. Protozoans and rotifers dominated the zooplankton communities. In the open-water stations, diversity was higher in high-water seasons in phytoplankton, while it was not significantly different between seasons in zooplankton. Composition of plankton communities in Lake Tonle Sap appears to have changed little since the 1950s, at least in phytoplankton, while the phytoplankton density appears to be higher in the present study. Among the macrozoobenthos, mollusks, oligochaetes and chironomids dominated in density, and mollusks exceeded others in biomass in both basins and seasons. The total densities of macrozobenthos were not high, being fewer than 1,300 m−2 throughout the stations and seasons. Possible reasons for the low zoobenthos abundance in the lake may include high predation pressures by benthivorous fish or unfavorable unstable and flocculant substrates.  相似文献

The community structure of a tropical pond located in Mexico City was described. Primary producers were diverse and abundant and macrophyte components provide a broad habitat diversity. Major biotic components in the water column were algae of the genera Microcystis, Scenedesmus and Chlamydomonas. Mats of Cyclotella were located in deeper, shaded areas associated with the bottom. Three species of emergent macrophytes characterize the large primary producers. The zooplankton was dominated by protozoa, which were more abundant than rotifers and Crustacea. Dominant invertebrate species of the pond bottom were insect larvae, gastropod mollusks, oligochaete annelids and nematodes. Vertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles) feed on this variety of biotic components. A flow diagram depicted the major biological interactions and suggested a complex trophic structure.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative aspects of the phytoplankton of the River Meuse were studied during 1992, at a point 537 km from the source. The phytoplankton was dominated by diatoms and green algae. The Stephanodiscus hantzschii-group was especially prominent. Other important taxa were Cyclotella meneghiniana, small Cyclotella and Thalassiosira, Aulacoseira ambigua and Nitzschia acicularis. Cell abundances varied from less than 1000 units ml–1 to about 25 000 – 30 000 units ml–1 during the blooms. The Stephanodiscus hantzchii-group constituted almost entirely the first spring bloom. During the summer period, small Thalassiosiraceae developed markedly and large Thalassiosira weissflogii appeared. During this period, green algae dominated diatoms as expressed in cell abundances. The main Chlorococcales were Scenedesmus quadricauda, Scenedesmus div. sp., Dictyosphaerium ehrenbergianum and Pediastrum duplex. Dinophyceae contributed a significant biomass during the summer period. Total biomass varied between 100 and 3 650 µg Cl–1. As previously observed (Descy, 1987), the factors regulating the phytoplankton growth were clearly physical variables: discharge, temperature and irradiance. However, in the summer period, low abundances might indicate a regulation by biotic factors. The impact of grazing by zooplankton is discussed, on the basis of observations of zooplankton development in the River Meuse and on the basis of simulation by a mathematical model. A comparison is carried out with recent data of phytoplankton in large European rivers.  相似文献

The investigation of the zooplankton community in the upstream part of Stratos reservoir during a 24 months survey (September 2004–August 2006) revealed 26 invertebrate species (14 rotifers, 6 cladocerans, 5 copepods and one mollusk larva). The mean abundance of the total zooplankton was higher in the first sampling period (2004–2005) and ranged between 8.81 and 47.74 ind. L−1, than the second period (2005–2006) when fluctuated between 1.91 and 43.09 ind. L−1. The seasonal variation was strongly influenced by the presence of rotifers, which accounting on average for 68.4% in total. Among them Keratella cochlearis and the order Bdelloidea were numerically the most important, while Macrocyclops albidus prevailed among the copepods and Bosmina longirostris among the cladocerans. Dreissena polymorpha was the only mollusk found in the zooplankton community. Rotifers, copepods and cladocerans showed a seasonal succession with the former preceding in the abundance having their first maximum in spring, while copepods and cladocerans followed, having peaks of abundance in early summer and in autumn, respectively. No seasonal succession among the cladoceran species was observed. The intense water flow in the upstream part of the reservoir, as well as temperature, conductivity, DO, pH, phosphates and silicates, were significant parameters controlling abiotic and biotic elements of the ecosystem and consequently influencing the seasonal variation and the dynamics of the zooplankton community.  相似文献

Community level effects of predation by two invertebrate predators, the opossum shrimp (Neomysis intermedia), and the larva of the phantom midge (Chaoborus flavicans) were studied and compared. N. intermedia appeared abundantly in the shallow eutrophic Lake Kasumigaura and had a significant impact on the zooplankton community. The predation pressure by Neomysis was highest on cladocerans, followed by rotifers, and finally copepods. At high densities (maximum nearly 20 000 individuals m–2), Neomysis excluded almost all cladocerans, rotifers and copepods from the lake.Zooplankton communities were established in experimental ponds, into which C. flavicans was introduced. The predator's density was around 1 individual l–1, and was probably controled by cannibalism. Although Chaoborus larvae feed on various zooplankton species, their predation impact on zooplankton populations was markedly selective. They eliminated medium- and small-sized cladocerans and calanoid copepods from the ponds, but rotifers increased.Although the feeding selectivities of Neomysis and Chaoborus individuals were similar, the predation effects on zooplankton communities by the two predators were different.  相似文献

The abundance and species composition of phytoplankton were investigated at stations in a permanently ice-free (61°S) and seasonally ice-covered area (64°S and 66°30′S) in the eastern Indian sector of the Southern Ocean between November 2001 and March 2002. Although a phytoplankton bloom occurred just after retreat of the sea ice at both stations in the seasonally ice-covered area, vertical stability of the water column during the bloom was weak at the most southerly station. This shows that a bloom can form even under weak vertical stability. In the bloom, diatoms dominated under weak vertical stability and Phaeocystis under strong vertical stability. In the latter case, ice algae largely contributed to development of the bloom. In the later observation period, a subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) was observed at 61°S and 64°S. Species composition was different between the mixed layer and SCM at 64°S, but was uniform with depth at 61°S, indicating that the SCM is formed by different mechanisms.  相似文献

Annual changes of rotifers, copepods, cladocerans, the ciliate Epistylis rotans, and larvae of Dreissena polymorpha were analysed for the period 1908–1990. Though food resources increased 6–10 fold in the course of eutrophication, only rotifers and Epistylis increased accordingly. Probably as a result of increased predation pressure crustaceans increased only twice. The seasonal pattern of metazoans and protozoans (flagellates, sarcodines, ciliates) were analysed for 12 and 3 years, resp. During winter and spring, large heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates dominated the zooplankton and were responsible for a pronounced - formerly underestimated - grazing pressure on phytoplankton. In early summer, metazoan filter-feeders were often able to cause a significant reduction of phyto- and protozooplankton. However, during some years, phytoplankton declined in the absence of a pronounced grazing pressure. Field data and experiments revealed that predators were able to regulate the density of cladocerans in early summer (mainly cyclopoids) and summer (mainly Leptodora, smelt and fish juveniles).  相似文献

An account is given of the phytoplankton in four relatively fast-flowing rivers in north-east England associated with a water transfer scheme. The total number of live cells (or units) ranged from 2 × 102 to 2 × 104 cells ml–1. Input of plankton from a reservoir did not appear to influence densities at a site 25 km downstream. Diatoms formed the majority of cells in most samples, with green algae second and cryptomonads third in importance. Among the diatoms, centrics were relatively more abundant at downstream sites. The ratios of live versus dead diatoms showed marked differences with season and between centric and pennate forms.  相似文献

The relationship of insect predators and phytoplankton with the abundance of Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles, Cx. vishnui Theobald and Cx. pseudovishnui Colless mosquito larvae and pupae (Diptera: Culicidae) in ricefields was investigated during three rice growing seasons. Notonectids were the most abundant insect predators, whereas diatoms dominated among phytoplankton. Multiple regression analysis showed that the occurrence of notonectids (both nymphs and adults) was negatively associated with larval abundance. Phytoplankton, especially diatoms and blue green algae (BGA), were found to favour abundance of culicine immatures during Navarai and Kuruvai crops, respectively. Larval gut analysis showed that the intake of algae by late instars was high, with 93%, 58% and 24% of diatoms, BGA and green algae, respectively. Filamentous algae may not necessarily be of nutritive value, but they are observed to form mats, which provide protection to the mosquito immatures from the predators.  相似文献

We conducted an outdoor mesocosm experiment of factorial design consisting of three levels of nutrient supply (no nutrient addition and additions of nitrogen and phosphorus in ratios of 10:1 and 45:1) cross-classified with two levels of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) (presence and absence). Nutrient supply significantly affected total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), TN: TP ratio, turbidity, Secchi depth, phytoplankton chlorophyll, filamentous blue-green algae, periphyton chlorophyll, Asplanchna and non-predatory rotifers. The presence of bluegill significantly increased TP, turbidity, diatoms, unicellular green algae, colonial blue-green algae, filamentous blue-green algae, periphyton chlorophyll, Asplanchna and non-predatory rotifers, and decreased Secchi depth, cladocerans, cyclopoid copepodids, copepod nauplii and chironomid tube densities. Nutrient supply and fish effects were not independent of each other as shown by significant nutrient × fish interaction effects for TP, Secchi depth, filamentous blue-green algae, periphyton chlorophyll, Asplanchna and non-predatory rotifers.  相似文献

In this study phytoplankton pigments and fatty acids were usedas biomarkers to study trophic relationships between phytoplanktonand zooplankton. These markers permit the characterization ofboth suspended matter and copepods, allowing examination ofthe transfers from food to zooplankton. A drogue study was carriedout to follow a water mass in the coastal waters off the easternEnglish Channel over a 3-day period, with samples collectedevery 3 h. The study focused on the dominant calanoid copepodspecies: Temora longicornis, Acartia clausi and Pseudocalanuselongatus. Our study was performed during the spring phytoplanktonbloom when solitary cells of Phaeocystis sp. formed 90% of thetotal phytoplankton. Fatty acid analyses provided an indicationof the low nutritive value of these algal cells; in contrastto other algal species which had higher nutritional value (e.g.colony-forming diatoms, Cryptophytes and dinoflagellates). Ourresults suggest that all species selectively grazed on Phaeocystissp. and non-selectively on diatoms. Dinoflagellates were avoidedby all species. Temora longicornis selectively grazed on Cryptophytes, which may be related to the nutritional value of this algae. The fatty acid composition of the three copepod species indicatedan ‘herbivorous’ diet for P.elongatus and an omnivorousone for A. clausi and T. longicornis, which is less opportunist.  相似文献

Species composition and interactions, biomass dominance, geographic distribution and driving variables were investigated for two key elements of the pelagic food web of Alpine lakes, the phytoplankton and the zooplankton, based on a single sampling campaign during summer 2000. Altogether, 70 lakes were surveyed, 49 of which located in three different lake districts of the west and eastern Italian Alps and 21 in the central Austrian Alps (within the uppermost Danube catchment). In addition to the analysis of environmental variables affecting distribution and species structure of the two planktonic compartments, a brief review of the main research lines and hypotheses adopted in the past for the study of phytoplankton and zooplankton in high Alpine lakes is given. The lakes, investigated partly within the European project EMERGE (EVK1-CT-1999-00032) and partly within a regional project in the eastern Alps, comprise a wide range of morphological, chemical and trophic conditions. The phytoplankton communities were found to be diverse and mostly dominated by flagellates (chrysophytes, cryptophytes and dinoflagellates), and only to a lesser extent by non-motile green algae, desmids and centric diatoms. The zooplankton communities were mainly dominated by Alpine cladocerans and copepod species, while rotifers were abundant within one group of Italian lakes (sampled in early summer). The multivariate statistical analyses (CCA) showed that catchment features (i.e. percentage of vegetation cover and geochemical composition) and nitrate concentration are essential drivers for the phytoplankton, whereas for zooplankton also trophic status of the lakes and phytoplankton structure are important. The combined variance analysis of the lake clusters outlined by the multivariate analyses on phytoplankton and zooplankton data, respectively, allowed the identification of four principal lake types (three located on siliceous and one on carbonaceous bedrock), each one characterised by a certain combination of habitat features, which in their turn influence trophic state, and phytoplankton and zooplankton species composition and functionality.  相似文献

A dramatic increase in the breeding population of geese has occurred over the past few decades at Svalbard. This may strongly impact the fragile ecosystems of the Arctic tundra because many of the ultra-oligotrophic freshwater systems experience enrichment from goose feces. We surveyed 21 shallow tundra ponds along a gradient of nutrient enrichment based on exposure to geese. Concentrations of total phosphorus (P) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the tundra ponds ranged from 2–76 to 2–23 μg l−1 respectively, yet there was no significant increase in phytoplankton biomass (measured as chlorophyll a; range: 0.6–7.3 μg l−1) along the nutrient gradient. This lack of response may be the result of the trophic structure of these ecosystems, which consists of only a two-trophic level food chain with high biomasses of the efficient zooplankton grazer Daphnia in the absence of fish and scarcity of invertebrate predators. Our results indicate that this may cause a highly efficient grazing control of phytoplankton in all ponds, supported by the fact that large fractions of the nutrient pools were bound in zooplankton biomass. The median percentage of Daphnia–N and Daphnia–P content to particulate (sestonic) N and P was 338 and 3009%, respectively, which is extremely high compared to temperate lakes. Our data suggest that Daphnia in shallow arctic ponds is heavily subsidized by major inputs of energy from other food sources (bacteria, benthic biofilm), which may be crucial to the persistence of strong top–down control of pelagic algae by Daphnia.  相似文献

A seasonal study of phytoplankton and zooplankton was conductedfrom 1999 to 2001 in Pensacola Bay, Florida, USA, to furtherthe understanding of pelagic food webs in sub-tropical estuaries.Monthly measurements included size-fractionated chlorophyll(whole water, <5 µm, <20 µm), net- and picophytoplanktoncomposition analyzed using microscopy, flow cytometry, and HPLCpigment analysis. Additionally, zooplankton abundance and dryweight were determined from net tows. The results show a phytoplanktoncommunity dominated by the small size fraction (<5 µm),especially during the warm periods. The <5 µm chlorophyllfraction was strongly correlated with cyanobacterial abundanceand zeaxanthin. Cyanobacteria (cf. Synechococcus) abundancepeaked during summer in the upper estuary, typically exceeding3 x 109 L-1, and was strongly correlated with temperature. Cyanobacteriaabundance at the freshwater end of the Bay (in the EscambiaRiver) was very low, suggesting that cyanobacteria were notdelivered via freshwater. Two pigmentation types of cyanobacteriawere observed. Phycoerythrin-containing cells (PE-rich) weremore abundant at the marine end, while phycocyanin-containingcells (PC-rich) were more abundant in the upper estuary. Thelarger algae (>5–10 µm) were predominantly composedof diatoms, followed by chlorophytes, cryptophytes and dinoflagellates. The three most abundant genera of diatoms were Thalassiosira,Pennales and Cyclotella. Zooplankton biomass averaged 12.2 µgC L-1, with peak biomass occurring during May (  相似文献
