Lambornella clarki (Ciliophora: Tetrahymenidae) was one of three common parasites infecting larvae of Aedes sierrensis (Diptera: Culicidae) in California treeholes sampled between 1983 and 1985. Lambornella occurred in 37 of 142 treeholes and was absent from holes with extremes of pH and high electrical conductivity. Ciliates were more common in treeholes in northern California, and L. clarki from all holes was pathogenic to Ae. sierrensis. Natural infection rates averaged 16.1% but reached 100% in some holes suggesting that epizootics may occur in natural host populations. Sequential sampling of treeholes indicated that free-swimming trophozoites appeared shortly after treeholes flooded, but their numbers declined in subsequent samples. Predation by Ae. sierrensis larvae and successful attack and entry of hosts probably accounted for this decline. Trophozoites were common in treehole water late in the season as adult mosquitoes were emerging, and these were probably released from moribund and dead infected hosts. The parasite persisted in dry treeholes between wet seasons in 90% of the cases indicating a highly efficient desiccation resistant cyst. Octomyomermis troglodytis (Nematoda: Mermithidae) and Ascogregarina clarki (Sporozoa: Eugregarinida) were found in 17 and 46 treeholes, respectively. The cooccurrence of these parasites and L. clarki within treeholes did not deviate from random, indicating that parasites are not segregated among larval habitats. All combinations of parasites were found within individual hosts suggesting that competitive forces in this parasite guild are probably weak.  相似文献

Lambornella clarki was a common parasite of Aedes sierrensis immatures collected from treeholes in Mendocino County, California, in 1982–1983. The ciliate was not found in mosquitoes from treeholes with water having the most extreme values of electrical conductivity (<0.23 and >1.74 mmhos/cm) and pH (<6.5 and >7.7). Infection rates for individual monthly samples from L. clarki-positive treeholes ranged from 1 to 75%; 67% of all infections were observed in 4th-instar larvae. Infection with pathogens and parasites such as L. clarki, Ascogregarina clarki, Octomyomermis troglodytis, and unidentified bacteria and fungi, appeared responsible for high mortality rates (21–76%). Parasitism with L. clarki did not always result in death of the mosquito host; 7% of adults emerging from samples held in the laboratory were found to be infected. Ciliates were restricted to the host hemocoel except in older females where they invaded the ovaries, resulting in parasitic castration. This phenomenon may be associated with parasite dispersal.  相似文献

Microplitis kewleyi Muesebeck is a gregarious internal parasite of larvae of the black cutworm Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel). Studies of the biology of the parasite revealed that there was an inverse relationship between host instar and parasite preference. Duration of development from egg to pupa ranged from 18 days at 27°C to 68.7 days at 16°C. Development from egg to pupa took 13.5–21.6 days when fourth and first instar host larvae, respectively, were parasitized. A larger number of parasites emerged from hosts parasitized in the fourth instar (22.4) than the first instar (11.5). Parasite pupation occurred when the host was in the fifth/sixth instar, depending on the instar parasitized. Thirty‐nine per cent of host larvae exposed as first instars to parasites died before parasite emergence. This decreased to 0% for host larvae exposed as fourth instars. The sex ratio was 1:1.2 (M:F). Thirty‐seven per cent of hosts exposed diurnally were stung, compared to 24% exposed nocturnally. Mean daily progeny was highest (12) on the first day, decreasing to zero after 20 days. Percent host parasitism was also highest on the first day (35%) decreasing to nearly 0% after 18 days. There appear to be three parasite larval instars. Host larvae often remained alive after parasite emergence.  相似文献

Lankesteria clarki sp. n. from the treehole mosquito, Aedes sierrensis (Ludlow) in California, is described. This species can be separated from the closely related ones, L. culicis (Ross) and L. barretti Vávra, by the totally intracellular nature of the trophozoite, the shape of the gamont, the position of the gamont nucleus and the structure and position of the residual body in the spore. Morphologic and ultrastructural investigations of gametogenesis and sporogony were conducted and the host relationship discussed. Lankesteria clarki was found in mosquitoes collected from all treeholes examined near Novato in Marin County, California and an examination of over 6,000 larvae of A. sierrensis showed an infection rate of 27.5%. The parasite is capable of destroying the midgut epithelial cells during its trophic stage and Malpighian tubule cells during gametogenesis and sporogony.  相似文献

The internal parasiteMicroplitis rufiventris Kok. passes through 3 instars but moults 3 times within its host. The last moult occuring just at emergence time. The morphology of the egg and larval stages of the parasite are discussed. At 27°C and a photoperiod of 6 h (6L:18D) the endo-developmental cycle of the parasite can summarize as follows: Egg 18–24 h; instar 1,4 days (fighting phase 48 h; feeding phase 30–48 h); instar 2, 12–18 h and instar 3,3 days. The effect of different photoperiods on the relative speeds of the endo-developmental stages of the parasite at each of 30, 25, 20°C were carefully studied. At the first 2 temperatures, the short photoperiod (6L:18D) accelerated the development of larval instars, while both of 18L:6D or 0L:24D slowed down the development. Under the latter photoperiods some larvae failed to moult and had emergence problems. The influence of photoperiod is significantly noticeable at 20°C. The incubation period of the egg-stage was prolonged significantly at 18L:6D and the development of larval instars was significantly faster and refined at 6L:18D. The factor(s) inhibiting the development of the egg-stage perhaps differ from those affecting the larval development. The ventral area of the host mid-gut among malpighian tubes seems to be where the surplus parasite larvae are eliminated by physical attack. A physiologically suppressed parasite larva is able to attack its developed competitor of the same age. Teratocytes cells perhaps play a part in eliminating the surplus parasite larvae by physiological suppression.  相似文献

Summary We conducted experiments to assess the importance of winter cold and photoperiod as factors affecting the spatial and age distributions of overwintering larvae of the treehole mosquito Anopheles barberi. Larval dormancy in A. barberi was induced by photoperiods with 14.75 h of light or less per 24 h cycle. About 75% of the larvae entering dormancy were in the second instar regardless of photoperiod. Dormant second instar larvae survived freezing at-15° C for 24 h better than dormant third instar larvae. Larvae were more likely to survive freezing at-15° C in water from treeholes in which they were commonly found in nature than in water from treeholes in which they were unlikely to occur. Female oviposition was significantly higher into water from treeholes in which larvae were likely to be found than in either water from treeholes in which larvae were not commonly found or distilled water. These findings suggest that, in the northern part of its range, the distribution of A. barberi and the age structure of overwintering cohorts are influenced by extreme winter cold. The mechanisms responsible for the distribution of larvae and the overwintering age structure are, respectively, female oviposition behavior and larval photoperiodism.  相似文献

To successfully complete its endoparasitic development, the strepsipteran Xenos vesparum needs to elude the defense mechanisms of its host, the wasp Polistes dominulus. SEM and TEM observations after artificial infections allow us to outline the steps of this intimate host-parasite association. Triungulins, the mobile 1st instar larvae of this parasite, are able to "softly" overcome structural barriers of the larval wasp (cuticle and epidermis) without any traumatic reaction at the entry site, to reach the hemocoel where they settle. The parasite molts 48 h later to a 2nd instar larva, which moves away from the 1st instar exuvium, molts twice more without ecdysis (a feature unique to Strepsiptera) and pupates, if male, or develops into a neotenic female. Host encapsulation involves the abandoned 1st larval exuvium, but not the living parasite. In contrast to the usual process of encapsulation, it occurs only 48 h after host invasion or later, and without any melanization. In further experiments, first, we verified Xenos vesparum's ability to reinfect an already parasitized wasp larva. Second, 2nd instar larvae implanted in a new host did not evoke any response by hemocytes. Third, we tested the efficiency of host defense mechanisms by implanting nylon filaments in control larval wasps, excluding any effect due the dynamic behavior of a living parasite; within a few minutes, we observed the beginning of a typical melanotic encapsulation plus an initial melanization in the wound site. We conclude that the immune response of the wasp is manipulated by the parasite, which is able to delay and redirect encapsulation towards a pseudo-target, the exuvia of triungulins, and to elude hemocyte attack through an active suppression of the immune defense and/or a passive avoidance of encapsulation by peculiar surface chemical properties.  相似文献

The parasitic larva of Telenomus remus is surrounded by giant cells throughout its first instar. These cells arise in the embryonic serosa of the parasite and grow in size, starting with a radius of 5nm and ending with 27nm. Young cells are round and mononuclear, whereas older ones are often polynuclear and have varied, irregular contours. Most cells are profusely vacuolated, the vacuoles being especially large in some of the older cells. Only a few of the giant cells are devoured by the first instar parasite larva, but all disappear at the end of this stage. No giant cells seem to be produced by supernumerary larvae. Once the parasite egg hatches, the host tissue disintegrates almost instantaneously.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The behaviour of the parasite Muscidifurax raptor Girault and Sanders was studied when searching for hosts, puparia of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). At low density females tend to avoid encountering parasitized hosts. This tendency decreases as density of searching females increases. 2. The proportional avoidance of superparasitism was calculated and the effect of increasing number of encounters per host on this parameter was analysed. 3. The mechanisms of solitariness were studied. These mechanisms include: outer marking of the hosts by the female parasite and deliberate physical attack of the newly hatched larvae to eliminate as yet unhatched eggs. 4. In cases of intraspecific competition between larvae, young first or second instar larvae usually have the advantage over older larvae.  相似文献

The life cycle of Lagochilascaris major was studied using eggs collected from a natural clinical case in a domestic cat. Twenty-seven white mice (Mus musculaus), 5 hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), and 1 vesper mouse (Calomys callosus) were orally inoculated with 800-1,300 embryonated eggs. When examined from 73 to 246 days postinoculation (PI), encysted third-stage larvae were seen in skeletal muscles and less frequently in connective tissue, liver, and lungs. Twenty-two of the 23 cats orally inoculated with 40-430 encysted larvae from these rodents, and necropsied from 1 hr to 185 days PI, became infected. Third-stage larvae were located in the stomach, esophagus, and oropharynx from 1 to 24 hr PI. At 48 hr, larvae, from mainly the fourth stage, were only found, unilaterally or bilaterally, inside a "sac" in the region of the semilunar fold of the palatine tonsil at the base of the tongue. Adult worms were found in this location from 10 to 175 days PI. No fistulated abscess to the outside medium was found. Adult worms were also found in the middle ears of 2 cats showing purulent otitis. Eggs in the ear secretion were under different stages of development. Eggs in feces were first observed on days 14 and 15 PI, and 1 cat shed them until 178 days PI. Six infected cats were treated with fenbendazole at 50 mg/kg of body weight for 3 consecutive days, eliminating all the parasites present in the tonsils. The drug was not effective against the parasites present in the middle ear. No stage of the parasite was found in the tissues of 5 cats given 4,000-5,200 eggs orally and examined after 19 and 50 days PI. This indicates that the life cycle of L. major requires an obligate paratenic host and is characterized by heteroxenic cycle.  相似文献

In studies of frugivorous tephritids, determining when offspring (i.e. egg and three larval instars) mortality occurs within the fruit can greatly improve the mechanistic understanding of the fly/host interaction. Previous research has demonstrated that the Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni, has differential offspring performance in two tomato cultivars Cherry and Roma, but when juvenile mortality was occurring was not determined. We examined B. tryoni egg and larval survival in three different ripening stages (immature-green (IG), colour-break (CB) and fully-ripe (FR)) of Cherry and Roma tomato cultivars through destructive fruit sampling at 72 and 120 hr for eggs, and 48 (1st instar), 96 (2nd instar) and 120 hr (3rd instar) after fruit inoculation with neonates for larvae. Cultivar and ripening stage had no significant effect on egg survival, nor larval survival at 48 hr: the overall percentage of egg survival was at least 80% across all treatments, while 1st-instar larval was less than 52% across all treatments. In immature-green tomatoes of both varieties, nearly all mortality occurred during the first and second instars, but at 96 and 120 hr, there were significant interaction effects between cultivar and ripening stage on larval survival. In both colour-break Cherry and Roma tomatoes, there was significant larval mortality between 96 and 120 hr. However, in fully-ripe Cherry, no further significant larval mortality happened after 48 hr, while in fully-ripe Roma significant larval mortality occurred between the first and second larval instars but not thereafter. The difference in timing of larval mortality with ripening stage provides indirect evidence of active fruit defence which is strongest in immature-green fruit, less in colour-break fruit and absent in fully-ripe fruit.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The relationship between responses of the insect parasitoid Cotesia rubecula (Marshall) to kairomones produced by the feeding activities of its host, Pieris rapae (L.), and patterns of parasitism were investigated under field conditions.
2. Parasitoid adults aggregated in patches with the highest densities of host larvae but there was no commensurate increase in the rate of attack in these patches.
3. The rate of attack was not limited by the availability of eggs.
4. The rate of parasitoid attack was highest where feeding damage by the host was highest, irrespective of current host density.
5. The rate of parasitoid attack was further influenced by host age distribution. Late instar larvae were less susceptible to parasitism than were early instar larvae. The rate of attack on early instar larvae occupying the same plants as late instar larvae was reduced. This reduction in rate of attack was due to limitations on parasitoid search time imposed by the increased feeding damage associated with large host larvae and by the increased time the parasitoid required to recover from an attack on these large host larvae.  相似文献

Digestive tract contents and feces of blackbirds were examined for cysts of Heterodera glycines, the soybean cyst nematode. Birds fed under laboratory conditions and trapped in naturally-infested fields were checked. Infective larvae were recovered from cysts in the excrement of birds 24 and 48 hr after they were fed cysts. Birds that were force-fed eggs and larvae discharged infective larvae in the excrement. Birds which consumed cysts mixed with feed and cysts in feed mixed with soil discharged numerous cysts containing infective larvae. Seven of 54 starlings, trapped and killed in an infested field, contained cysts in their digestive tracts.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Previously we have shown that the number of Apanteles congregatus Say (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) larvae developing in Manduca sexta (L.) (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae) larvae that are parasitized in the first instar determines the timing of emergence of the parasites from the host. Here we show that the first larval ecdysis of the wasps occurs after the host ecdyses to the terminal stage, regardless of whether that stage is the host's fourth, fifth or supernumerary sixth instar. Starvation of newly ecdysed terminal stage host larvae prevents emergence of the parasites. When starvation is begun at progressively later times, then an increasing proportion of the hosts have parasites that emerge, suggesting a period of indispensable host nutrition exists during which the host must feed to satisfy the developmental requirements of the parasites. In hosts fed ad libitum , the weight of the host plus its parasites at the time of emergence is positively correlated with the number of parasites developing in the host. When the weight of the parasites alone is subtracted from the weight of the host—parasite complex, the data show that heavily parasitized hosts have a larger host mass than lightly parasitized larvae. In contrast, the wasp larvae, and the adult males and females that develop from them, have lower individual weights after development in heavily parasitized hosts.  相似文献

Cannibalistic behavior among Ochlerotatus triseriatus larvae was studied to determine whether cannibals are able to alter their attack behavior based on their relatedness to newly hatched conspecific prey larvae. Fourth instar larvae, reared in one of four different initial densities, were placed with newly emerged first instars and, after 48 h, the number of first instar larvae remaining was recorded. Our data suggest a Type III functional response of non-kin fourth instar larvae to first instar prey density. Several significant effects emerged from our analysis model, namely that the number of first instar prey available, the relationship of the first instar larvae with the cannibals, and the density at which the fourth instar cannibals were reared all affected the number of first instar larvae consumed.  相似文献

Interspecific host discrimination by adults, and larval competition among the endoparasitoidsMicroplitis croceipes (Cresson),Microplitis demolitor Wilkinson,Cotesia kazak (Telenga) andHyposoter didymator (Thunberg) were investigated usingHeliothis virescens (F.) as the host. In ovipositional choice tests, the mean number of encounters and ovipositions for unparasitized hosts was not significantly different from the mean number of encounters and ovipositions for parasitized hosts for each treatment combination (P>0.05). Thus, none of the parasitoid species discriminated between host larvae recently parasitized once by a female of another species und unparasitized hosts. However, in all but two cases, females did discriminate between unparasitized hosts and hosts in which an early first instar of the first-attacking species was developing.Cotesia kazak andH. didymator did not discriminate between unparasitized hosts and hosts parasitized by an early first instar ofM. demolitor. Larval competition among these parasitoid species was studied for three time intervals between the first and second species parasitization: 1) second species attack immediately (5–15 sec) after the first; 2) second species attack 24 h after the first; and 3) second species attack 48 h after the first. Time until egg eclosion was shortest forM. demolitor, thenC. kazak, thenM. croceipes, and longest forH. didymator. When the second parasitoid species attacked a host immediately after the first species, the species in which egg eclosion occurred first was the victor more frequently, except whenM. demolitor competed withC. kazak andH. didymator. With a 24 h delay between the first and second species to attack, the older first instar from the first parasitization usually outcompeted the younger first instar from the second attack. A first instar from the second species to attack generally outcompeted the second instar of the first species when the second parasitization had been delayed 48 h. Competiors were eliminated mainly by physical attack, butC. kazak andM. croceipes apparently also killedH. didymator eggs by physiological processes.  相似文献

Laboratory and greenhouse studies were conducted on Oomyzus sokolowskii Kurdjumov, a parasite of the crucifer pest Plutella xylostella ( L.). O. sokolowskii preferred the 3rd and 4th instar P. xylostella larvae over fresh pupae for parasitization. It is thus a larval parasite. Within the range of 10?C to 35?C, parasitism was positively correlated with temperature. High parasitism at temperatures of 30?C and 35?C indicates that this insect is suitable for the control of P. xylostella in the tropical lowlands. In a no- choice test where only fresh pupae of Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov, another potentially competing larval parasite of P. xylostella, were offered, O. sokolowskii failed to parasitize pupae of C. plutellae. In a choice test where the 4th instar P. xylostella larvae and fresh C. plutellae pupae were offered, O. sokolowskii parasitized only P. xylostella larvae. This parasite, therefore, is not a hyperparasite of P. xylostella. When C. plutellae-ovvposited P. xylostella larvae were offered at intervals, O. sokolowskii, parasitized only freshly oviposited host larvae. The longer the period that elapsed after C. plutellae oviposition of P. xylostella larvae, the lesser was the parasitism of these larvae by O. sokolowski.  相似文献

Abstract:  Interspecific competition between Diadegma semiclausum and Cotesia plutellae was investigated at 25°C in the laboratory, by exposing the third instar larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella to both species together, either species alone or by exposing the host larvae already parasitized by one species, at different intervals, to the other. When host larvae were exposed simultaneously to two species in one arena, parasitism rates of the host by each species were not reduced by the presence of the other species; joint parasitism rate by two species was not significantly higher than that by either parasitoid alone. Both parasitoids could lay eggs into the host larvae which had previously been parasitized by the other species, leading to the occurrence of multiparasitized hosts. When host larvae were parasitized first by D. semiclausum and then being followed within 1–2 h by exposing to C. plutellae , or vice versa, ensuing parasitoid cocoons from the multiparasitized host larvae were nearly all C. plutellae . When host larvae were parasitized initially by C. plutellae and then being followed by D. semiclausum two or more days later, all parasitoids ensued from the multiparasitized hosts were C. plutellae . In contrast, when host larvae were parasitized initially by D. semiclausum and then being followed by C. plutellae two or more days later, most host larvae could not survive to prepupae and most of the ensuing parasitoid adults from the surviving hosts were D. semiclausum . Dissections of host larvae at various time intervals after parasitization by the two parasitoids showed that development of both parasitoids in multiparasitized hosts were somewhat arrested, and that the first instar larvae of C. plutellae could initiate a physical attack on the larvae of D. semiclausum and remove the latter.  相似文献
