Ferns in which vessels have been demonstrated to date are phylogenetically relatively specialized and characteristic of habitats with marked extremes in temperature and water availability. These specifications do not apply to the Gleicheniaceae, which indicates that vessels may occur in a range of more primitive ferns, including those from more nearly mesic habitats. Vessels in Dicranopteris have perforation plates (both lateral and terminal) with morphology similar to that of lateral wall pitting as seen with light microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is therefore necessary to demonstrate presence of perforations. Vessel presence in Dicranopteris is important in forming a picture of vessel presence and specialization in ferns, the phylogenetic and ecological distribution of which may differ from the patterns found in monocotyledons and dicotyledons. We believe that presence of vessels may not be a reliable indicator of phylogenetic position among ferns. 相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of tracheary elements of roots of five species from four genera of Marattiaceae and of the rhizome of one species revealed vessel elements present in all. The secondary wall framework of perforation plates is the same as that of lateral wall pitting for vessel elements in all species. Thus, no specialization is present in perforation plates of Marattiaceae compared to the simplified morphology of perforation plates of some leptosporangiate ferns (e.g., Dryopteridaceae, Polypodiaceae, and Pteridaceae). The difference between lateral wall pitting and perforation plates in tracheary elements of Marattiaceae cannot be seen by light microscopy (in which pit membranes are transparent), but is evident with SEM. Diversity in structure of perforation plates (especially the alternation of wide and narrow perforations within a plate) and presence of web-like pit membrane remnants are evident. Vessels are widespread in both leptosporangiate and eusporangiate ferns, although specialization in perforation plates (e.g., bars few and more widely spaced in lateral wall pitting of a given vessel element) is to be expected only in ferns of habitats with marked fluctuation in water availability. Vessels of Marattiaceae lack such specializations and are thus are correlated with the mesic habitats characteristic for the family. 相似文献

Perforation plates are reported in aerial and subaerial axes of Psilotum nudum and in aerial axes of Tmesipteris obliqua. In Psilotum, both perforations lacking pit membranes and perforations with pit membrane remnants were observed. Perforation plates in Psilotum may consist wholly of one type or the other. In Tmespteris, perforations have threadlike pit membranes or consist of porose pit membranes. Wide perforations alternating with narrow pits, a conformation observed in various ferns, were observed in Psilotum (subaerial axes). In Psilotum, perforations are more common in metaxylem than in protoxylem; perforations in protoxylem consist of primary wall areas containing small circular porosities or relatively large circular to oval perforations. There are no modifications in the secondary wall framework of protoxylem or metaxylem in Psilotum or Tmesipteris that would permit one to distinguish presence of perforations or perforation plates with light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is required for demonstration of porose walls or perforations. Abstract. 1. The relationship between cyanogenesis in bracken fern and the insect fauna feeding on the plant was investigated over a 3 year period. The most common insects between May and July, while cyanide levels were high, were the sawflies Strongylogaster impressata Provancher, S.multicincta Norton, Aneug-menus fzavipes (Norton), the aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) and a microlepidopteran species of Monochroa .
2. Collections of insects from cyanogenic and acyanogenic fronds showed significantly fewer sawflies on the cyanogenic fronds. The aphid and the microlepidopteran were randomly distributed with respect to cyanogenicity.
3. Feeding tests for two of the sawfly species ( Simpressata and Smulticincta ) showed that larvae grew more slowly and had a higher mortality when raised on cyanogenic fronds than on acyanogenic ones.

Bracken [ Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Kuhn] is a cosmopolitan species and is a noxious weed in many areas. Because of its abundance, particularly in Britain, bracken affords an ideal system for investigating various aspects of population genetics and evolution. High mobility of dispersal units (spores) suggests that rates of gene flow among distant populations should be high. Gene flow is a major evolutionary force that influences the genetic structure of populations. To examine the effects of gene flow on population heterogeneity and population substructuring in bracken, starch gel electrophoresis of enzymes was used to provide the necessary genetic database. Allele frequency data at 21 loci were obtained for seven British populations, one Majorcan and one from the eastern United States. A model was employed to estimate the amount of gene flow ( Nm ) at several levels. Gene flow among British populations was extremely high ( Nm = 36.51), one of the highest estimates reported for plants. Among eight European populations gene flow was lower (but still considered high) at Nm = 2.47. Trans-Atlantic gene flow was low ( Nm = 0.0926).

The data indicate that, compared with other species, there is very little genetic differentiation among British populations of bracken. Indeed, it appears that the whole island is behaving as a single randommating population. This result is consistent with high levels of gene flow. Only one population (on the Isle of Arran) showed statistically significant genetic substructuring. In a spatially explicit simulation model of vegetation dynamics (VegeTate), I labelled the initial mass of Pteridium aquilinum in each of 225 cells as a single, unique genet or clone. The physical environment was homogeneous and all genets shared the same phenotype. The aim was to discover whether and how the success of each genet was affected by its initial position relative to other genets and a competing grass species. In a scenario in which grazing generated a grass-bracken mosaic with complex spatial dynamics, the amount of growth of each genet ranged widely, from frequent extinction to mass increase by over 300 times. The main factor in the impact of position on genet growth was shown to be a benefit from the initial presence or proximity of a large mass of P. aquilinum. This was because a high density of P. aquilinum reduced local grazing intensity, allowing plant mass to accumulate and shifting the balance of competition in favour of P. aquilinum. Thus variations between cells in initial mass of P. aquilinum were greatly amplified. The implications of this amplification of initial differences between sites for population genetics are briefly discussed. Qualitative features of the spatial distribution of genets at the end of simulations matched reported observations on patchily distributed field populations of P. aquilinum. These features included dominance of a large population by a small minority of genets, widespread mixtures of a dominant genet and one or more subordinate genets, and the presence of patches of P. aquilinum formed both by agglomeration from neighbouring foci and by spread of dominant genets. Under less intense grazing, which allowed little or no development of vegetation mosaics, genet growth varied relatively little and initial variations in relative mass between genets were little changed. Based on this study, I hypothesize that any processes that generate non-linear spatial dynamics will also generate complex genet dynamics. 相似文献

研究了蕨菜[Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Kuhn var.latiusculum (Desv.) Underw.]多酚氧化酶的动力学性质,结果表明:以邻苯二酚为底物,该酶最适pH为7.4,最适温度为25℃,60℃以上使酶迅速失活,动力学方程v=619.08[S]/(0.031 [S]),Vc、异Vc钠、NaHSO3、L-Cys可完全抑制酶活性,饱和NaCl能显著抑制酶活性,蔗糖、SDS对酶有激活作用。该酶能催化邻苯二酚、焦性没食子酸氧化,但对焦性没食子酸亲和力更强。 相似文献

为了探讨附生蕨类植物多样性与附载植物的关系,调查了附载植物胸径、树高、枝下高及附载植物种类对附生蕨类植物多样性的影响.按照径级分别对不周径级下的附载植物的附生蕨类植物的多样性进行偏相关分析,并采用方差分析判断附载植物种类对附生蕨类植物多样性的影响.结果表明,附载植物树高和胸径与附生蕨类植物多样性之间存在明显正相关,附载植物的枝下高与附生蕨类植物多样性之间存在着明显的负相关,表明较低的枝下高有利于附生蕨类植物多样性的增加.附载植物种类对附生蕨类植物多样性具有重要的影响. 相似文献

The aerial microenvironment in culture vessels has a significant effect on the growth and development of plantlets in vitro. Since the gas exchange between outside air and inner air can influence the microenvironment of culture vessel, it is necessary to measure the air exchange rate for various vessels. In this study, water vapor was used as the tracer gas, and the change of absolute humidity inside the vessel was calculated continuously by the measured values of a relative humidity sensing element. The outside environment was maintained at constant humidity level by a saturated salt solution. The RH data were transformed into absolute humidity and the specific humidity ratio. The air exchange rates of several tissue culture vessels were then calculated. The exchange rate was between 0.0145 h–1 to 0.0376 h–1. This technique provides an inexpensive, rapid and simple way to determine the air exchange rate of a culture vessel within a short period. The effects of the air current velocities on the exchange rates of vessels were also determined. 相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The xylem, or water transport system, in vascular plants adopts different morphologies that appear sequentially during growth phases. This paper proposes an explanation of these morphologies based on engineering design principles. METHODS: Using microscopic observations of the different growth stages, an engineering analysis of the xylem vessels as a closed cylinder under internal pressure is carried out adopting pressure vessel design concepts. KEY RESULTS: The analysis suggests that the xylem vessel structural morphology follows the 'constant strength' design principle, i.e. all of the material within the wall of the xylem is loaded equally to its maximum allowable stress capacity, and the amount of material used is therefore systematically minimized. The analysis shows that the different structural designs of the xylem vessel walls (annular, helical, reticulate and pitted) all quantitatively follow the constant strength design principle. CONCLUSIONS: The results are discussed with respect to growth and differentiation. It is concluded that the morphology of the xylem vessel through the different phases of growth seems to follow optimal engineering design principles. 相似文献

Effects of long-term exposure to elevated CO2 and increased nutrient supply on bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Bracken ( Pteridium aquilinum ) is an important fern with a global distribution. Little is known of the response of this species to elevated CO2 . We investigated the effects of high CO2 (570 compared with 370 μmol mol–1 ) with and without an increased nutrient supply (a combined N, P, K application) on the growth and physiology of bracken, growing in containers in controlled-environment glasshouses, over two full growing seasons. Results of growth and physiology determinations are reported for the second season.
2. Elevated CO2 had little impact on the growth or allocation of dry mass in bracken. No significant changes were detected in dry mass of the total plant or any of the organs: rhizomes, roots and fronds. In contrast to the small effects of high CO2 , the high nutrient treatment caused a three-fold stimulation of total plant dry mass and an increase in the allocation of dry mass to above ground when compared with low nutrient controls.
3. Net photosynthetic rates in saturating light were increased by both high CO2 and nutrient treatments, particularly in spring months (May and June). Growth in elevated CO2 did not cause a down-regulation in light-saturated rates of photosynthesis. The increased carbon gain in the high CO2 treatments was accompanied, in the low-nutrient plants, by higher concentrations of carbohydrates. However, in high-nutrient plants the CO2 treatment did not cause an accumulation of carbohydrates. The absence of a growth response to elevated CO2 in bracken despite significant increases in photosynthesis requires further investigation. 相似文献

为探讨蕨菜黄酮对染矽尘小鼠的抗氧化应激及肺纤维的影响,采用超声雾化石英粉尘混悬液,使小鼠染尘,蕨菜黄酮(Pteridium aqulinum flavonoids,PAF)连续灌胃染尘小鼠3周,取血测血清中超氧化物歧化酶(superoxide dismutase,S0D)、丙二醛(malonaldehyde,MDA),并测肺组织中SOD、MDA、谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶(glutathione peroxidase,GSH-Px)、羟脯氨酸(hydroxyproline,Hyp),计算肺质量系数,取右肺下叶做病理组织观察;结果显示蕨菜黄酮组血及肺组织MDA值显著下降、SOD活力显著升高,肺组织GSH-Px活力显著升高,肺Hyp含量及肺指数显著下降,肺纤维化进程延缓,表明蕨菜黄酮对染矽尘小鼠具有较好的抗氧化应激效应,延缓了肺纤维化进程。 相似文献
