The effects of waste from a salmon farm on the benthos of a fjordic sea loch on the western coast of Scotland have been studied. Within 3 m of the floating cages the sediment was highly reducing, and dissolved oxygen content of the water overlying the sediment ranged from 35 to 75% saturation. At ⩾ 15 m from the cages the sediment was oxygenated, and the dissolved oxygen content of the water overlying the sediment was 50–85% saturation. Sedimentary redox potential and dissolved oxygen content of bottom water showed a seasonal variation. The benthic fauna showed marked changes in species number, species diversity, faunal abundance, and biomass in the region of the fish farm, with four zones of effect identified. Directly beneath, and up to the edge of the cages, there was an azoic zone. A highly enriched zone, dominated byCapitella capitata (Fabricius) andScolelepis fuliginosa (Claparède), occurred from the edge of the cages out to as 8 m. A slightly enriched ″transitional ″ zone occurred at ⩽ 25 m, and a “clean” zone at distances > 25 m. This study showed that salmon farming had similar effects on the benthos as other forms of organic enrichment, but the effects were limited to a small area in the immediate vicinity of the cages  相似文献

Samples for benthic meiofauna were collected in the vicinity of a salmon aquaculture farm in Bliss Harbour, Bay of Fundy, Canada in early August 1990. Simultaneously, samples for water content, organic carbon, organic nitrogen were collected, and redox potential and benthic oxygen consumption were measured. Meiobenthic size-spectra of biomass and respiration (calculated using allometric equations) were examined at three locations along a gradient of sediment organic enrichment radiating from the farm. Neither biomass nor respiration size-spectra were significantly different between locations despite a decrease in taxon diversity with increasing sediment organic enrichment. Small nematodes were the single largest contributor to respiration and usually to biomass at all locations, particularly at the most organically enriched location directly under the salmon farm. Calculated meiofauna respiration accounted for a greater proportion of total benthic community respiration in organically enriched sediments than in less enriched sediments.  相似文献

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are an alternative technology to tackle the major environmental challenges associated with conventional cage culture systems. In order to systematically assess the environmental performance of RAS farming, it is important to take the whole life cycle into account so as to avoid ad hoc and suboptimal environmental measures. So far, the application of life cycle assessment (LCA) in aquaculture, especially to indoor RAS, is still in progress. This study reports on an LCA of Atlantic salmon harvested at an indoor RAS farm in northern China. Results showed that 1 tonne live‐weight salmon production required 7,509 kWh farm‐level electricity and generated 16.7 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (eq), 106 kg of SO2 eq, 2.4 kg of P eq, and 108 kg of N eq (cradle‐to‐farm gate). In particular, farm‐level electricity use and feed product were identified as primary contributors to eight of nine impact categories assessed (54–95% in total), except the potential marine eutrophication (MEU) impact (dominated by the grow‐out effluents). Among feed ingredients (on a dry‐weight basis), chicken meal (5%) and krill meal (8%) dominated six and three, respectively, of the nine impact categories. Suggested environmental improvement measures for this indoor RAS farm included optimization of stocking density, feeding management, grow‐out effluent treatment, substitution of feed ingredients, and selection of electricity generation sources. In a generic context, this study can contribute to a better understanding of the life cycle environmental impacts of land‐based salmon RAS operations, as well as science‐based communication among stakeholders on more eco‐friendly farmed salmon.  相似文献

Bacterial community shifts in organically perturbed sediments   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Bacterial abundance, diversity and sediment function were investigated in organically perturbed sediments under Tasmanian salmon (Salmo salar) farms and adjacent reference sites. Bacterial numbers increased as farming and organic loading progressed through the farm stocking cycle and declined during the fallow period, although not to prestocking levels. Bacterial numbers ranged between approximately 2 x 10(8) and 3 x 10(9) cells per gram of sediment and were higher at cage sites than reference sites. Microelectrode and respiration data also demonstrated a clear effect of organic loading on sediments. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) showed that bacterial communities shifted both in response to farm loading and its cessation. A seasonal effect on microbial communities was also evident. Although bacterial communities did shift again during the fallowing period, this shift was not necessarily a return to preloading communities. The complexity of community shifts may be affected by the vast functional redundancy of bacterial groups. All bacterial communities, including those at reference sites, were highly dynamic. Respiration studies of amended sediments indicated that fish farm sediments were at least as resilient and diverse as reference site communities. The results of this study indicate that the functional redundancy of highly complex bacterial communities contributes to their robustness. The relationship between diversity and stability in bacterial communities remains unclear and requires further investigation before an understanding of bacterial response to perturbation is possible.  相似文献

Demersal, non-cryptic, wild fishes were counted in replicate 100 m2 transects beneath a floating sea-cage fish farm and two nearby sandy locations at Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, eastern Atlantic) four times before and after the cessation of farming. Cessation of farming involved the removal of farmed fishes and ceasing of the daily feeding, although farm structures (cages and moorings) remained. A 'beyond-BACI' sampling design provided the framework to detect the effect of the cessation of farming, which produced qualitative and quantitative changes in the composition and structure of the fishes assemblages beneath the sea-cage fish farm compared with two nearby controls. The aggregative effect on wild fishes due to the existence of the farm decreased from c. 50 times compared to nearby controls when the farm was in full operation to less than two times when only the farm structures remained. Abundances of particulate organic matter feeders (large-sized mugilids), large benthic chondrichthyid rays and Pagellus spp. declined markedly at the fish farm after the cessation of farming, suggesting that the removal of daily feeding was responsible for their disappearance. In contrast, abundances of herbivores, benthic macro- and meso-carnivores were similar beneath the fish farm both before and after the cessation of farming. Benthic macro-carnivores, however, were more abundant beneath the sea-cages compared to control locations, supporting the hypothesis that the increase in the physical structure beneath farms plays a role in aggregating these species. Sparids occurred beneath the sea-cages only after the cessation of farming, while the two natural control locations did not show differences from before to after the cessation of farming. Overall, the results show that the wild fish assemblage beneath the farm partially changed after the cessation of farming to a more natural state, approaching the assemblages observed at the control sites.  相似文献

Results from the field testing of some innovative sampling methods developed to evaluate risk management strategies for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contaminated sediments are presented. Semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) were combined with novel deployment methods to quantify the availability of PCBs at the Sangamo-Weston Lake Hartwell Superfund Site in SC. Three locations in Lake Hartwell were examined: a background site (BKG) with little detectable contamination and two contaminated sites (T-M/N and T-O). PCB availability was quantified using sediment surface samplers designed to hold SPMDs in contact with surface sediments, benthic dome samplers designed to enclose and suspend SPMDs at the sediment-water interface, and commercially obtained SPMD cages suspended in the water column. A two-way analysis of variance showed significant effects by sampler type (P < 0.0001) and site (P < 0.0001) for mean time-weighted average (TWA) total PCBs (t-PCBs). Regardless of the SPMD sampler used, mean TWA t-PCBs were directly proportional to the level of contamination present (BKG < T-M/N < T-O). Water column and surface sediment sampler t-PCB uptake patterns were described by a significant linear fit of the data (r2 = 0.9625, p < 0.0001, and r2 = 0.8188, p < 0.0001, respectively). Dome and sediment surface SPMD samples had a higher percentage of higher chlorinated PCBs compared to water column samples.  相似文献

Marine sediment samples collected from various sites at 2 Atlantic salmon farms in Tasmania were analysed for the presence of Neoparamoeba sp., an amoeba associated with amoebic gill disease (AGD) in farmed Atlantic salmon. Environmental variables of the sediment layer at each site, including redox potential and sulphide concentration, were measured and the general biological condition assessed by video observation. Sediments and environmental data were collected on 4 occasions at each site over a 12 mo period. Neoparamoeba sp. was detected in populations of amoebae recovered by culture from all sites and in 50% of all sediment samples taken. There was evidence of a seasonal influence on the presence of the amoeba, but this was different at each farm. No Neoparamoeba sp. was recovered from any sites at Farm 1 during the winter of 2002 whereas at Farm 2 this was the case for the summer of 2003. There appeared to be no relationship between the presence of Neoparamoeba sp., salmon farming activities and environmental parameters.  相似文献

AIM: The effects of fish farming on microbial enzyme activities and heterotrophic bacterial density were investigated in three Mediterranean sites before and after the start of mariculture. METHODS AND RESULTS: Microbial activities were measured on water and sediment samples by using fluorogenic substrates specific for leucine aminopeptidase, beta-glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase (AP); bacterial counts were determined by Marine agar plates. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Comparison of activity and abundance values obtained before and after the experiment showed that fish farming mainly affected the levels of microbial activities; they were significantly enhanced both in water and sediments, reaching an increase of 183.66 times for AP in Castellammare Gulf. After mariculture, no significant variations were recorded in heterotrophic bacterial density in the waters, while significant changes were observed in the sediments. Effects induced appeared to be extended not only to stations in which cages were located, but also to control sites far from the direct influence of fish farming.  相似文献

Sulfate reduction rates and biogeochemical parameters of fish farm sediments across the Mediterranean were investigated in the order to evaluate the potential effects of organic matter inputs on habitat quality for the common seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Four study sites were selected in Spain, Italy, Greece and Cyprus to represent the Mediterranean basin. P. oceanica was found in immediate vicinity of all the farms, which were located at physically exposed sites about 1 km from the shore lines. Organic matter accumulation, sulfate reduction rates and sulfur pools were measured in depth profiles along transects from the farms in both bare and vegetated sediments. Results show that although the organic matter accumulation was minor at the sites (POC < 2.8% DW), the sulfate reduction rates were high, in particular at the largest farm in Italy (up to 212 mmol m−2 d−1), similar to rates found at shallower, temperate fish farm sites, where higher sedimentation rates can be expected. Sulfate reducing bacteria in these low-organic, carbonate-rich Mediterranean sediments respond strongly to organic matter loadings and cause habitat degradation. Sulfate reduction rates measured in the P. oceanica sediments were among the highest recorded (7.8–42.0 mmol m−2 d−1) similar to rates found in degrading meadows impacted by organic matter loadings. As sulfate reduction rates were correlated with the sedimentation rates along the transects rather than organic matter pools this suggests mineralization processes were controlled by organic matter loading in fish farm sediments. The vegetated sediments near the net cages were more reduced due to accumulation of sulfides compared to control sites, which is a possible contributing factor to the observed seagrass decline in the farm surroundings. It is recommended that Mediterranean fish farms are placed in areas with rapid dispersal of particulate waste products to minimize organic matter loading of the sediments and thereby preserve habitat quality for benthic fauna and flora.  相似文献

Being both stable carbon sinks and greenhouse gas sources, boreal lake sediments represent significant players in carbon (C) cycling. The release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) into anoxic water is a widespread phenomenon in boreal lakes with impact on sediment C budgets. The association of OC with iron (Fe) is assumed to play an important role for this anoxic OC release via the dissimilatory reduction of Fe, but also to influence the stabilization of OC in sediments. To investigate the role of Fe–OC association for OC dynamics in different boreal lake sediments, we compared the content of Fe-bound OC [Fe–OC, defined as citrate bicarbonate dithionite (CBD) extractable OC] and the extent of reductive dissolution of solid-phase Fe and OC at anoxia. We found high among-lake variability in Fe–OC content, and while the amount of Fe–OC was high in three of the lakes (980–1920 µmol g?1), the overall contribution of Fe–OC to the sediment OC pool in all study lakes was not higher than 11%. No linkages between the amount of the Fe–OC pool and lake or sediment characteristics (e.g., pH, DOC concentration, sediment OC content, C:N ratio) could be identified. The observed release of OC from anoxic sediment may be derived from dissolution of Fe–OC in the lake sediments with high Fe–OC, but in other lake sediments, OC release during anoxia exceeded the sediment Fe–OC pool, indicating low contribution of reductive Fe dissolution to OC release from these lake sediments. The range of the investigated boreal lakes reflects the high variability in the size of the sediment Fe–OC pool (0–1920 µmol g?1) and CBD-extractable Fe (123–4050 µmol g?1), which was not mirrored in the extent of reductive dissolution of Fe (18.9–84.6 µmol g?1) and OC (1080–1700 µmol g?1) during anoxia, suggesting that Fe-bound OC may play a minor role for sediment OC release in boreal lakes. However, studies of redox-related OC cycling in boreal lake sediments should consider that the amount of Fe–OC can be high in some lakes.  相似文献

Fish farming activities result often in considerable high organic loadings to the water masses and sediments near the fishfarm. This study was carried out to evaluate the potential of flounder as food spillage feeder in salmonid freshwater culture. When transferring to fresh water, a clear tendency of an obligate need for food was discovered. Sufficient and continuous amounts of food are absolutely necessary for survival also when the flounder has been adapted for freshwater as long as 15 months. Flounder both in cages and in trays seemed to have little or no problem feeding on the bottom deposits (food and remnants of salmon) naturally occurring in salmon smolt production units. A high feeding rate in 0+ flounder preying on different cladoceran species was observed in addition to no significant size electivity. When feeding 0+ flounder and salmon in duoculture with small amounts of zooplankton, a competition effect resulting in growth inhibition in salmon was observed. Fairly good growth rates in flounder were observed in mixed culture experiments, but the flounder showed high individual variation. Fine meshed bottom net in the pen is necessary to retain enough food spillage to assure a positive growth rate in the flounder.  相似文献

A new biomass index for monitoring the impact of marine fish cage farming on the benthic environment was evaluated at seven commercial fish farms in the eastern Mediterranean. At each farm, stations near and further away from the cages were sampled for macrofauna and geochemical variables during July 2001, and March and October 2002. Benthic samples were sequentially sieved through 1.0 and 0.5 mm mesh screens and a biomass fractionation index (BFI) was estimated as follows: biomass having passed through 1.0 mm and retained on 0.5 mm sieve only/total biomass (biomass retained on 1.0 mm + 0.5 mm sieve). BFI was quantitatively assessed and compared with the geochemical faunistic and management practice data. BFI was found to decrease consistently with distance from fish cages and particularly after 10 m from the edge of the cages. At all farms, BFI was found to be significantly correlated with distance, redox potential and organic carbon. Multiple regression analysis showed that BFI incorporates various components of sediment geochemistry (sediment grain size and total organic carbon) as well as distance and feeding rates. Although BFI needs to be further tested in different geographic locations and under different management practices, the results seem to be promising for long-term monitoring programmes since it provides a simple and inexpensive solution for assessing the effects of benthic organic enrichment due to fish farm activities.  相似文献

This paper investigated the assimilation of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in Saccharina latissima in proximity to salmon cages in coastal waters. The bioassays were performed on plants from three stations located in the vicinity of a salmon farm (Salmo salar) in exposed waters at Tristein (63° 52′ N, 9° 37′ E) in Central Norway. The growth, the C and N content, and the nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N) of S. latissima were monitored over 1 year. The DIN concentrations in seawater were higher at the salmon farm stations than at the reference station during the winter, and the N/P ratio at the salmon farm stations was higher from September to January and in June. S. latissima at the salmon farm stations grew faster than at the reference station. The length of S. latissima increased by 50 % when integrated with the salmon farm compared to the reference station. The N content of S. latissima was positively correlated to the DIN concentration in seawater (p?<?0.05), but the increased N supply from salmon did not result in N accumulation in S. latissima at the salmon farm station because of the dilution by a higher growth rate. The δ15N in S. latissima was higher at the salmon farm station from April to June and changed in the direction of the δ15N signature in urine. This indicated that N in S. latissima at the salmon farm station partly originated from the salmon. One hectare of S. latissima may absorb 0.8~1.2 t N during one growth season. Large-scale cultivation of S. latissima should be considered to mitigate the environmental effects of DIN wastes from salmon farms.  相似文献

Fluxes of oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus were determined in two areas of the Sacca di Goro lagoon, at a site influenced by the farming of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and a control site. Mussel farming induced intense biodeposition of organic matter to the underlying sediments, which stimulated sediment oxygen demand, and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus regeneration rates compared to the nearby control station. Overall benthic fluxes (–11.4 ± 6.5 mmol O2 m−2 h−1; 1.59 ± 0.47 mmol NH4+ m−2 h−1 and 94 ± 42 μmol PO43− m−2 h−1) at the mussel farm are amongst the highest ever recorded for an aquaculture impacted area and question the belief that farming of filter-feeding bivalves has inherently lower impacts than finfish farming. In situ incubations of intact mussel ropes demonstrated that the mussel rope community was an enormous sink for oxygen and particulate organic matter, and an equally large source of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate to the water column. Overall, a one meter square area of␣mussel farm (mussel ropes and underlying sediment) was estimated to have an oxygen demand of 46.8 mmol m2 h−1 and to regenerate inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus at rates of 8.5 and 0.3 mmol m2 h−1, with the mussel ropes accounting for between 70 and more than 90% of the overall oxygen and nutrient fluxes. Even taking into account that within the farmed area of the Sacca di Goro lagoon, there are 15–20 m−2 of open water for each one covered with mussel ropes, the mussel ropes would account for a large and often dominant part of overall oxygen and nutrient fluxes. These results demonstrate that it is essential to take into account the activity of the cultivated organisms and their epiphytic community when assessing the impacts of shellfish farming. Overall, whilst grazing by the mussel rope community could act as a top-down control on the phytoplankton, most of the ingested organic matter is rapidly recycled to the water column as inorganic nutrients, which would be expected to stimulate phytoplankton growth. Consequently, the net effect of the mussel farming on phytoplankton dynamics, may be to increase phytoplankton turnover and overall production, rather than to limit phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

Current monitoring methods to assess benthic impacts of marine finfish aquaculture are based on complex biological indices and/or geochemistry data. The former requires benthic macrofauna morpho‐taxonomic characterization that is time‐ and cost‐intensive, while the latter provides rapid assessment of the organic enrichment status of sediments but does not directly measure biotic impacts. In this study, sediment samples were collected from seven stations at six salmon farms in British Columbia, Canada, and analyzed for geochemical parameters and by eDNA metabarcoding to investigate linkages between geochemistry and foraminifera. Sediment texture across farm sites ranged from sand to silty loam, while the maximum sediment pore‐water sulphide concentration at each site ranged from 1,000 to 13,000 μM. Foraminifera alpha diversity generally increased with distance from cage edge. Adonis analyses revealed that farm site explained the most variation in foraminifera community, followed by sediment type, enrichment status, and distance from cage edge. Farm‐specific responses were observed in diversity analyses, taxonomic difference analyses, and correlation analyses. Results demonstrated that species diversity and composition of foraminifera characterized by eDNA metabarcoding generated signals consistent with benthic biodiversity being impacted by finfish farming activities. This substantiates the validity of eDNA metabarcoding for augmenting current approaches to benthic impact assessments by providing more cost‐effective and practicable biotic measures than traditional morpho‐taxonomy. To capitalize on this potential, further work is needed to design a new nomogram that combines eDNA metabarcoding data and geochemistry data to enable accurate monitoring of benthic impacts of fish farming in a time‐ and cost‐efficient way.  相似文献

1. We conducted experiments in a Colorado Rocky Mountain stream to measure the effect of foraging by predatory stoneflies ( Megarcys signata ) on fine sediment deposition and removal.
2. Cages containing one of four treatments were placed in the stream substratum and removed 3 days after fine sediment load to the stream was experimentally increased. Cages containing a stonefly but no prey accumulated less sediment than cages initially with no benthic invertebrates. Although cages with Megarcys plus prey also tended to have less sediment than controls, sediments were not reduced in cages with prey only.
3. Distance from sediment source, depth and current velocity at cages, final prey density and numbers of prey per predator gut at the end of the experiment had no effects on sediment accumulation in cages.
4. To determine the mechanisms underlying this effect, behavioural tests were conducted in a stream-side artificial stream system. To simulate the different hunger levels of stoneflies in cages, Megarcys were fed or starved for 3 days before behavioural trials that were repeated during high (night) and low (day) stonefly feeding periods. During night trials, foraging movements by starved Megarcys were more prolonged and active than those of fed stoneflies, regardless of the presence of prey. However, neither hunger level nor prey presence affected stonefly foraging behaviour during day trials.
5. Results of field experiments suggest that the presence of stoneflies enhances sediment removal from interstitial spaces. Behavioural observations indicate that nocturnal searching for prey by hungry Megarcys dislodges fine sediments from interstitial spaces.
6. Future studies should explore beyond the direct impacts of predators on stream invertebrate communities, and investigate the potential impact of predators on benthic microhabitat quality.  相似文献

Growing numbers and increased stocking of marine mussel farms make reliable techniques for environmental effect assessment a priority. Previously, we showed how the color intensity of soft sediment could be used to estimate its acid volatile sulfide (AVS) content, a product of the anaerobic microbial degradation of organic matter deposits. We then proposed to include assessments of the AVS farm footprint in marine farm monitoring, in particular, to investigate temporal changes in the extent of the seafloor area of elevated sediment AVS content. Such assessment requires accurate detection of the AVS footprint boundary. Here, we demonstrate how to detect this boundary with analyses of sediment color intensity. We analyzed 182 sediment profile images taken along three transects leading from approximately 50 m inside to 200 m outside a long-line mussel farm in New Zealand and found that the mean sediment color intensity inside the farm boundary was almost one third lower than that of the sediment distant from the farm. Segmented regression analysis of the combined color intensity data revealed a breakpoint in the trend of increasing grey values with increasing distance from the farm at 56 ± 13 m (± 95% confidence interval of the breakpoint) outside the mussel farm. Statistical analyses indicated that the extent of the color intensity footprint was a function of water column depth, as was shown visually using mapping methods; organic particles disperse further in a deeper seawater column. We conclude that for soft coastal sediments, our sampling and data analysis techniques may provide a rapid and reliable supplement to existing benthic surveys that assess environmental effects of mussel farms.

A comparison of sediments and associated macrobenthos at sites sampled within 20 fish farm leases distributed across southeastern Tasmania indicated major natural changes along a regional cline. Introduced taxa were strongly represented in the fauna, comprising 45% of total macrofaunal biomass. Large differences were evident between sites affected by different levels of organic farm waste. Sites located adjacent (< 10 m) to farm cages possessed significantly depressed sediment redox levels, a dominance of capitellid and dorvilleid polychaetes, and low macrofaunal species richness. Subtle impacts extended across farm lease areas in the form of depressed redox potential at 40 mm depth and changes to the macrobenthic community, including a prevalence of the dogwhelk Nassarius nigellus and a paucity of the heart urchin Brissus sp. and the maldanid polychaetes Asychis sp. and Rhodine sp. Minor farm effects were also evident at sites sampled 35 m outside farm lease boundaries, most notably as elevated population numbers of the polychaete Terrebellides sp., bivalve Mysella donaciformis and heart urchin Echinocardium cordatum. Amongst the univariate metrics examined, redox potential at 40 mm depth and the ratio of bivalves to total molluscs provided the most sensitive indicators of farm impacts, with the latter metric relatively insensitive to spatial variation between locations within the region studied.  相似文献
