Chickens of different ages will be submitted to periods of non-eating of 2 to 10 days. The non-eating causes a constant lowering of the body temperature which, in the 10 days old chickens, is 4-5 times higher than in the 3 months old ages. To an higher diminishing of the temperature it corresponds an higher loss percentage of weight. In normal conditions the temperature tends to increase from morning to evening, while during the non-eating period it diminishes. With repeated non-eating periods the colling increases. The difference between young and old animals would depend on differences in quantity of their basal metabolism (lower in the old aged) and on the different availability of energetic material in reserve (higher percentage in the old aged).  相似文献

This study investigated lipoprotein compositions and distribution in Tsaiya ducks under ad libitum feeding and fasting. The study was conducted on each of thirty Tsaiya ducks over two 4-week periods. Each of the 30 Tsaiya ducks was randomly allocated into an ad libitum feeding group or a 3-day fasting group during the growing period (8-12 weeks old) and during the initial laying period (26-30 weeks old; 10-14 weeks after the onset of laying), respectively. Experimental results indicated that HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is the primary lipoprotein species in growing ducks but that in laying ducks the major population of lipoprotein is VLDL (very low density lipoprotein). Protein and cholesteryl ester were identified as the major components of HDL during both periods; triacylglycerol (TG) was the largest proportion of VLDL in both periods. In laying ducks VLDL contains more TG than in growing ducks; VLDL particle sizes in laying ducks were larger than in growing ducks. Fasting significantly decreased VLDL levels during both periods. The TG content in most lipoproteins was also decreased by fasting during both test periods. In contrast, the cholesteryl ester and free cholesterol in most lipoproteins were increased by fasting. The particle size of HDL and VLDL also decreased during fasting. This study indicated that lipoprotein profiles and components in Tsaiya ducks during the laying period were different from during the growing period and were affected by fasting.  相似文献

Amount and topography of small lymphoid nodules (SLN) have been studied by means of the quantitative method in flat total preparations of the small and large intestine obtained from 111 corpses of persons of both sex (from newborn up to old age). Total amount of the SLN in the large intestine wall in all age periods exceeds that of the SLN in the small intestine wall. From birth up to the period of the 1 childhood total amount of the SLN increases successively, reaching (51 +/- 14) X 10(2) in the small and (74 +/- 11) X 10(2) in the large intestine at the age of 4-7 years. Beginning from 8 years of age up to old age, total amount of the SLN decreases successively, to a more degree in the wall of the small intestine than in the large intestine. The arrangement density of the SLN in the large intestine wall essentially exceeds that of the SLN in the small intestine wall during the all age periods. From birth up to early childhood the arrangement density of the SLN increases and then gradually decreases both in the small and large intestine. This demonstrates that development of the SLN takes place during the first 4-7 years of the human life, in contrast to the lymph nodes and tonsils, their greatest development takes place during juvenile and adolescent age.  相似文献

Aging involves many alterations in circadian rhythms, including a loss of sensitivity to both photic and nonphotic time signals. This study investigated the sensitivity of young and old hamsters to the phase advancing effect of a 6-h dark pulse on the locomotor activity rhythm. Each hamster was tested four times during a period of approximately 9 mo; periods of exposure to a 14-h photoperiod were alternated with the periods of exposure to constant light (20-80 lx), during which the dark pulses were administered. There was no significant difference in the phase shifts exhibited by the young (4-10 mo) and old hamsters (19-25 mo) or in the amount of wheel running activity displayed during each dark pulse. However, young hamsters had a significantly greater propensity to exhibit split rhythms immediately after the dark pulses. These results suggest that, although aging does not reduce the sensitivity of the circadian pacemaker to this nonphotic signal, it alters one property of the pacemaker, i.e., the flexibility of the coupling of its component oscillators.  相似文献

Six heifers were injected i.m. with 2500 i.u. PMSG followed by 15 mg prostaglandin 48 h later. Serial blood samples were collected through a catheter in the caudal vena cava every 10 min for 8 h on Day 10 (7 h after PMSG administration), during luteal regression (7 h after prostaglandin administration) and on the day thereafter. Four normally cyclic heifers served as a control group. Concentrations of progesterone, androstenedione, oestradiol, LH, FSH, and PMSG in the vena cava samples were measured and the frequency and amplitudes of episodic pulses of all hormones were estimated except for PMSG. Ovaries were collected by ovariectomy at 50 h after onset of luteal regression to determine the number of preovulatory follicles (non-atretic follicles greater than or equal to 10 mm). Stimulation of follicular growth by administration of PMSG resulted in the following effects on the secretion of steroids and endogenous gonadotrophins. (1) There were no alterations in progesterone concentration and the amplitude and frequency of episodic pulses. Mean (+/- s.e.m.) concentrations were 54.1 +/- 5.8, 19.1 +/- 3.1 and 3.4 +/- 0.9 nmol/l on Day 10 (L), during luteal regression (LR) and on the day thereafter (F) respectively. (2) There were no alterations in the episodic secretion patterns of androstenedione. Mean concentrations were 0.20 +/- 0.02, 0.15 +/- 0.02 and 0.11 +/- 0.02 nmol/l for the L, LR and F periods respectively. (3) There was an increase in oestradiol concentration from 17.1 +/- 3.0 pmol/l during the L period to 233.7 +/- 86.4 pmol/l during the F period. Pulse amplitude was enhanced compared to corresponding periods in control animals whereas pulse frequency remained the same. The oestradiol concentration was significantly correlated with the number of preovulatory follicles (r = 0.82, P less than 0.05). (4) There was a suppression of the frequency of episodic LH pulses (/8 h) during the LR (3.2 +/- 0.7) and F (4.3 +/- 0.4) periods compared to corresponding periods in control heifers (9.5 +/- 0.9 and 7.0 +/- 1.5 respectively). The preovulatory LH peak occurred earlier in 4 of 6 treated heifers. (5) There was a suppression of FSH concentrations, pulse amplitude and frequency during the LR and F (17.4 +/- 0.9 mg/l, 4.7 +/- 0.8 microgram/l and 7.5 +/- 0.4 pulses/8 h) periods compared to the corresponding F-period values (35.6 +/- 6.2 mg/l, 9.8 +/- 1.6 micrograms/l and 9.3 +/- 0.3 pulses/8 h) in control heifers.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

We measured leg blood flow (LBF), drew arterial-venous (A-V) blood samples, and calculated muscle O(2) consumption (VO(2)) during incremental cycle ergometry exercise [15, 30, and 99 W and maximal effort (maximal work rate, WR(max))] in nine sedentary young (20 +/- 1 yr) and nine sedentary old (70 +/- 2 yr) males. LBF was preserved in the old subjects at 15 and 30 W. However, at 99 W and at WR(max), leg vascular conductance was attenuated because of a reduced LBF (young: 4.1 +/- 0.2 l/min and old: 3.1 +/- 0.3 l/min) and an elevated mean arterial blood pressure (young: 112 +/- 3 mmHg and old: 132 +/- 3 mmHg) in the old subjects. Leg A-V O(2) difference changed little with increasing WR in the old group but was elevated compared with the young subjects. Muscle maximal VO(2) and cycle WR(max) were significantly lower in the old subjects (young: 0.8 +/- 0.05 l/min and 193 +/- 7 W; old: 0.5 +/- 0.03 l/min and 117 +/- 10 W). The submaximally unchanged and maximally reduced cardiac output associated with aging coupled with its potential maldistribution are candidates for the limited LBF during moderate to heavy exercise in older sedentary subjects.  相似文献

In the period of 2001-2004, frequency of cells bearing mutations at T-cell receptor (TCR) locus was assessed in 553 inhabitants of radiation polluted regions of the Russian Federation and 154 unexposed control persons. The inhabitants were divided into three groups according to age at the moment of the Chernobyl disaster and 137Cs pollution density: 1) in utero, 37-555 kBq/m2; 2) 0-14 years old, 20-555 kBq/m2; 3) 18 and more years old, highest 137Cs density (185 more than 555 kBq/m2). The most intense changes of the TCR-mutant cell frequency were observed in the group of persons exposed to ionizing radiation in utero. The mean frequency of the mutant cells was higher in the first group than in age-matched control group by about 1.5-fold: 4.0 x 10(-4) vs 2.7 x 10(-4) accordingly (p < 0.0001). Elevation in the mean TCR-mutant cell frequency was less expressed in group of inhabitants aged 0-14 years at the moment of irradiation start: 1.3-fold increase in comparison to age-matched control (3.8 x 10(-4) vs 2.9 x 10(-4), p = 0.0002). It was not found significant differences in mutant cell frequencies between control group and adults consisting in the third group (18 and more years old at the moment of the Chernobyl accident). The changes of the TCR-mutant cell frequency in persons exposed in pre- and postnatal periods differ not only quantitatively, but qualitatively. In the fist case all persons react to irradiation by increasing number of the TCR-mutant cells in some degree. In the second case - only a part of population. Proportion of reacting persons depends on age at the start of irradiation and, perhaps, on dose absorbed. The TCR-mutant frequency was significantly higher in persons with benign tumors of different localizations and nodules in thyroid gland than in persons without this pathology.  相似文献

The influence of nicotine in modulating vulnerability to atrial tachycardia and fibrillation (AT/AF) remains ill defined. The isolated hearts of six young (2-3 mo) and six old (22-24 mo) male Fischer 344 rats were Langendorff perfused at 5 ml/min with oxygenated Tyrode solution at 37 degrees C, and the whole heart was also super-fused with warmed oxygenated Tyrode solution at 15 ml/min. Nicotine prolonged the interatrial conduction time and effective refractory period that were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the old than in the young rats in a concentration-dependent manner. Nicotine had a biphasic effect on burst atrial pacing-induced AT in both groups, increasing it at 10-30 ng/ml while decreasing it at 50-100 ng/ml (P < 0.01). Nicotine at 10-100 ng/ml increased burst atrial pacing-induced AF in the young rats but suppressed it in the old rats (P < 0.01). Optical mapping showed the presence of multiple independent wavefronts during AF and a single periodic large wavefront during AT in both groups. Nicotine, at concentrations found in the blood of smokers (30-85 ng/ml), exerts biphasic effects on inducible AT/AF in young rats and suppresses it in the old rats by causing high degrees of interatrial conduction block.  相似文献

Few studies have investigated physiologic and cognitive effects of "long-term" electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure in humans or animals. Our recent studies have provided initial insight into the long-term impact of adulthood EMF exposure (GSM, pulsed/modulated, 918 MHz, 0.25-1.05 W/kg) by showing 6+ months of daily EMF treatment protects against or reverses cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's transgenic (Tg) mice, while even having cognitive benefit to normal mice. Mechanistically, EMF-induced cognitive benefits involve suppression of brain β-amyloid (Aβ) aggregation/deposition in Tg mice and brain mitochondrial enhancement in both Tg and normal mice. The present study extends this work by showing that daily EMF treatment given to very old (21-27 month) Tg mice over a 2-month period reverses their very advanced brain Aβ aggregation/deposition. These very old Tg mice and their normal littermates together showed an increase in general memory function in the Y-maze task, although not in more complex tasks. Measurement of both body and brain temperature at intervals during the 2-month EMF treatment, as well as in a separate group of Tg mice during a 12-day treatment period, revealed no appreciable increases in brain temperature (and no/slight increases in body temperature) during EMF "ON" periods. Thus, the neuropathologic/cognitive benefits of EMF treatment occur without brain hyperthermia. Finally, regional cerebral blood flow in cerebral cortex was determined to be reduced in both Tg and normal mice after 2 months of EMF treatment, most probably through cerebrovascular constriction induced by freed/disaggregated Aβ (Tg mice) and slight body hyperthermia during "ON" periods. These results demonstrate that long-term EMF treatment can provide general cognitive benefit to very old Alzheimer's Tg mice and normal mice, as well as reversal of advanced Aβ neuropathology in Tg mice without brain heating. Results further underscore the potential for EMF treatment against AD.  相似文献

Kidneys of new-born animals are resistant to arginine vasopressin (AVP). The ability of the hormone to regulate water permeability of the collecting duct can be seen from weaning period, probably due to the maturation of the intracellular signaling pathway. The purpose of the present work was to investigate the effect of V2 receptor agonist dDAVP on the water permeability of OMCD basolateral membrane in 10-, 22- and 60-day old Wistar rats. We also estimated ontogenetic gene expression of AQP2, AQP3, AQP4 and V2 receptor. Osmotic water permeability (Pf) of the basolateral membrane of microdissected OMCD was measured under control conditions and after incubation with the agonist V2 receptor desmopressin (dDAVP; 10(-7) M). Water permeability in 10- and 22-day old rats under control conditions were significantly higher than in adults. Desmopressin stimulated significant increase of this parameter in 22-day old pups (Pf = = 125 +/- 4.85; Pf = 174 +/- 8.2 microns/s, p < 0.001) and adult rats (Pf = 100.5 +/- 7.38; Pf = 178.8 +/- 9.54 microns/s, p < 0.001). Osmotic water permeability of the OMCD basolateral membrane in 10-day old rats does not depend on dDAVP (Pf = 172.5 +/- 23.8; Pf = 164.8 +/- 34 microns/s). With the RT-PCR, we observed a gradual increase of AQP2 and V2 receptor genes expression during postnatal ontogenesis. The gene expression of AQP3 and AQP4 remained unchanged during postnatal ontogenesis. In general, the water permeability of the OMCD basolateral membrane of rats can be stimulated by AVP since the 22nd day of postnatal life. The water permeability of the OMCD basolateral membrane under control conditions gradually decreased during postnatal development, while gene expression of AQP3 and AQP4 was unchanged. Ventilation (V) increases lung lymph flow (Ql), but the separate effects of tidal volume (Vt) and frequency (f) and the role of V-induced changes in edema formation are poorly understood. An isolated, in situ sheep lung preparation was used to examine these effects. In eight sheep with f = 10 min(-1), results obtained during 30-min periods with Vt = 5 or 20 ml/kg were compared with values obtained during bracketed 30-min control periods (Vt = 12.5 ml/kg). Eight other sheep with constant Vt (12.5 ml/kg) were studied at f = 5 or 20 min(-1) and compared with f = 10 min(-1). Three additional groups of six sheep were perfused for 100 min with control V (10 ml/kg, 10 min(-1)). Vt was then kept constant or changed to 20 or 3 ml/kg during a second 100-min period. Increases in Vt or f increased Ql and vice versa, without corresponding effects on the rate of edema formation. For the same change in V, changing Vt had a greater effect on Ql than changing f. The change in Ql caused by an increase in Vt was significantly greater after the accumulation of interstitial edema. The change in Ql caused by a sustained increase in Vt was transient and did not correlate with the rate of edema formation, suggesting that V altered Ql through direct mechanical effects on edema-filled compartments and lymphatic vessels rather than through V-induced changes in fluid filtration.  相似文献

The incidence of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) before (1984-1988) and after (1989-1994), a nationwide intervention with VA-MENGOC-BC vaccination started in 1989, was compared. The prevaccination period incidence density (ID> 8.8/10(5) year-person) was higher than the postvaccination ID (ID< 6.5/10(5) year-person). The percentage proportional differences from the start to the end of each period of ID in the vaccinal period was higher (87%) than the prevaccinal (37%) with significant differences among vaccinated groups (< 25 years old). A break-point (Chow test) was confirmed by the decrease in the ID between 1989 and 1990 in children under 1 year old, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19 and 50-54 years. Comparison of ID using maps showed a decrease in IMD in all municipalities during the postvaccination period. These findings support the epidemiological impact of VA-MENGOC-BC vaccination in the reduction of IMD morbidity.  相似文献

The rates of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), serotype distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility prior to and after the introduction of the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in Portuguese children were evaluated. The changes in incidence of IPD in children under 1 year old between the two periods of the study was not significant (P=0.53), despite the 21% decline. In children under 18 years old there was a 27.7% decrease in vaccine serotypes. All nonvaccine serotypes increased 71.4%. The decrease in vaccine serotypes was more impressive during the first year of life (-54.8%) than for children between 1 and 5 years of age (-19.1%). Among children under 1 year old, penicillin nonsusceptible isolates declined between the two periods of the study (47.2% vs. 25.0%) (P=0.03), as did those of cefotaxime and ceftriaxone nonsusceptible isolates. No changes were observed for isolates nonsusceptible to tetracycline and macrolides. The serotypes of these nonsusceptible isolates differed after the introduction of vaccine (P=0.01). Multiresistance increased 57.1% after the introduction of vaccine. Multiresistant isolates with vaccine serotype declined 42.9% (P<0.001), and nonvaccine serotypes appeared during the vaccination period (P<0.001). These findings suggest a replacement of vaccine serotypes by nonvaccine serotypes, mainly among nonsusceptible isolates.  相似文献

Arousal is an important protective mechanism that aids in the resolution of obstructive sleep apnea in adults and children, but its role in neonatal apnea has not been investigated. The primary aim of the present study was to determine the role of arousal in the termination of apnea in preterm infants. Videorecording was used to identify spontaneous behavioral arousal in a group of healthy full-term (n = 7) and preterm (n = 10) infants before and during polygraphic monitoring of cardiorespiratory variables and in a group of preterm infants with apnea (n = 10) during similar polygraphic monitoring. Spontaneous arousal rates (mean +/- SE) in full-term infants before and during polygraphic monitoring were 0.18 +/- 0.03 and 0.23 +/- 0.07 episodes/min, respectively. Corresponding values in nonapneic preterm infants were 0.24 +/- 0.03 and 0.24 +/- 0.02 episodes/min. In apneic preterm infants, mean spontaneous arousal rate during polygraphic recording was 0.26 +/- 0.02, but it was considerably higher during apneic sleep periods (0.59 +/- 0.17) than during nonapneic sleep periods (0.25 +/- 0.01). The frequency of occurrence of arousal was significantly higher (P less than 0.005) in long vs. short apnea, mixed vs. central apnea, and severe vs. mild apnea. Although a clear association between arousal and apneic resolution was observed in preterm infants, lack of arousal responses in a large number of apneic episodes suggests that behavioral arousal is not essential for the termination of apnea in these infants.  相似文献

The effects of aging on plasma concentration of thyroxine (T4) and cortisol and on responses of these hormones to low ambient temperatures were determined in the dog. Female beagle dogs were divided into three age groups: old, adult, and puppies. The mean (+/- SD) ages were 11.4 +/- 0.2 years, 3.0 +/- 0.4 years, and 7.6 +/- 0.2 weeks, respectively. All dogs came from a genetically homogeneous colony and were free from any disease. The adult and old dogs were used during anestrus. Based on four daily blood samples, the mean (+/- SE) T4 level in the old dogs (2.8 +/- 0.1 microgram/dl) was significantly (P less than 0.001) lower than that in the adults (4.2 +/- 0.2 micrograms/dl) and puppies (4.4 +/- 0.2 micrograms/dl). By contrast, mean plasma cortisol levels in the old dogs (21.1 +/- 3.1 ng/ml) and adults (15.4 +/- 2.4 ng/ml) were significantly higher than those in the puppies (7.2 +/- 1.1 ng/ml). No significant changes in plasma T4 and cortisol occurred in any of the three age groups at 22 degrees C or during exposure to 10 or 4 degrees C. Exposure to -5 degrees C, however, produced significant increases in T4 (greater than 130% by 5 hr) and cortisol (greater than 280% by 1 hr) in adult dogs. This temperature produced only a modest increase in T4 (70% by 3.5 hr) and no change in cortisol in the old dogs. The puppies showed no change in T4 and cortisol during exposure to -5 degrees C. The results demonstrate that with advancing age, plasma T4 and cortisol concentrations change in opposite directions, thus supporting the hypothesis of a negative relationship between these two hormones. These results also show that the responses of these hormones to the stress of cold decline during aging and are not yet developed in the very young.  相似文献

Visual predators tend not to hunt during periods when efficiency is compromised by low light levels. Yet common murres, a species considered a diurnal visual predator, frequently dive at night. To study foraging of murres under different light conditions, we used a combination of archival tagging methods and astronomical models to assess relationships between diving behaviour and light availability. During diurnal and crepuscular periods, murres used a wide range of the water column (2-177 m), foraging across light intensities that spanned several orders of magnitude (10(3)-10(-10) Wm(-2)). Through these periods, they readily dived under conditions equivalent to ambient moonlight (~10(-4) Wm(-2)) but rarely under conditions equivalent to starlight (~10(-8) Wm(-2)). At night, murres readily foraged during both moonlit and starlit periods, and diving depth and efficiency increased with nocturnal light intensity, suggesting that night diving is at least partially visually guided. Whether visually guided foraging is possible during starlit periods is less clear. Given the dense prey landscape available, random-walk simulations suggest that murres could benefit from random prey encounters. We hypothesise that murres foraging through starlit periods rely either on close-range visual or possibly nonvisual cues to acquire randomly encountered prey. This research highlights the flexibility of breeding common murres and raises questions about the strategies and mechanisms birds use to find prey under very low light conditions.  相似文献

Using a sensitive in vitro granulosa cell aromatase bioassay (GAB), we determined serum and urinary levels of bioactive follicle-stimulating hormone (bio-FSH) in male and female rats from birth to Day 40 of age. In addition, serum immunoreactive FSH (immuno-FSH) was measured by radioimmunoassay to determine the bio- to immuno-(B/I) ratio of FSH. During the neonatal period (Days 1-7 of age), both sexes had detectable serum bio-FSH levels. In the infantile period (Days 7-21), serum bio-FSH levels initially decreased at Day 10 for both sexes, and then rose steadily, reaching maximum concentrations at Day 14 (males: 68.7 ng/ml; females: 114.6 ng/ml). Subsequently, FSH levels in the females decreased from Day 16 throughout the juvenile (Days 21-35) and prepubertal (Days 35-40) periods. In contrast, FSH levels in the males fluctuated during these periods. In the males, immuno-FSH reflected the bioactive profiles, with a B/I ratio of 2.2 +/- 0.2. In the females, the B/I ratio was approximately 2.5 during the neonatal and infantile periods but declined to approximately 1.0 during the juvenile and prepubertal periods, consistent with earlier observations of heterogeneous forms of pituitary FSH in immature female rats. Morning urine samples were also collected daily and bio-FSH concentrations were determined. In both sexes, urinary bio-FSH profiles were highly correlated (r = 0.93) with serum FSH throughout development. Nonfeeding infective juvenile (IJ) entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are used as biological agents to control soil-dwelling insects, but poor storage stability remains an obstacle to their widespread acceptance by distributors and growers as well as a frustration to researchers. Age is one factor contributing to variability in EPN efficacy. We hypothesized that age effects on the infectiousness of IJs would be evident within the length of time necessary for IJs to infect a host. The penetration behavior of "young" (<1-wk-old) and "old" (2- to 4-wk-old) Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (GPS 11 strain), Steinernema carpocapsae (All strain), and Steinernema feltiae (UK strain) IJs was evaluated during 5 "exposure periods" to the larvae of the wax moth, Galleria mellonella. Individual larvae were exposed to nematode-infested soil for exposure periods of 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 hr. Cadavers were dissected after 72 hr, and the IJs that penetrated the larvae were counted. Larval mortality did not differ significantly between 72- and 144-hr "observation periods," or points at which larval mortality was noted, for any age class or species. However, age and species effects were noted in G. mellonella mortality and nematode penetration during shorter time periods. Initial mortality caused by S. carpocapsae and H. bacteriophora IJs declined with nematode age but increased with S. feltiae IJ age. Young S. carpocapsae IJs penetrated G. mellonella larvae at higher rates than old members of the species (27-45% vs. 1-4%). Conversely, old S. feltiae IJs had higher penetration rates than young IJs (approximately 8 to 57% vs. 4 to approximately 31%), whereas H. bacteriophora IJs had very low penetration rates regardless of age (3-5.6%). Our results show that the effect of age on IJ infectiousness can be detected in IJs aged only 2 wk by a 4-hr exposure period to G. mellonella. Although force fluctuations during a steady contraction are often heightened in old adults compared with young adults and are enhanced in young adults during the stress response, the mechanisms underlying the augmentation are uncertain. The purpose of the study was to compare the effect of a stressor on the plasma concentrations of selected stress hormones and on the force fluctuations experienced by young and old adults during the performance of a precision grip. Thirty-six men and women (19-86 yr) participated in a protocol that comprised anticipatory (30 min), stressor (15 min), and recovery periods (25 min). The stressor was a series of noxious electrical stimuli applied to the dorsal surface of the left hand. Subjects sustained a pinch-grip force with the right hand at 2% of the maximal voluntary contraction force. The fluctuations in pinch-grip force, the interference electromyogram (EMG) of six muscles, and the spectra for the force and EMG were quantified across the 70-min protocol. The stressor increased the force fluctuations, largely due to an enhancement of the power at 1-2 Hz in the force spectrum (r(2) = 0.46). The effect was greatest for the old adults compared with young and middle-aged adults. The plasma concentrations of the stress hormones (adrenocorticotropin, epinephrine, and norepinephrine) were elevated to similar levels for all three age groups, and the changes were not associated with modulation of the force fluctuations. Furthermore, the heightened EMG activity exhibited by the old adults during all periods was not related to the changes in the force fluctuations or the 1- to 2-Hz force oscillations. The absence of a change in the mean pinch-grip force during the protocol and the lack of an association between elevation of the plasma concentrations for the stress hormones and modulation of the force fluctuations suggest that the enhanced force fluctuations caused by the stressor was due to an increase in the low-frequency output of the spinal motor neurons.  相似文献

Ten-day old Robro broiler chicks were used to test the effect of daily subcutaneous injections of two insulin levels (5- and 10-IU . kg-1 BW) administered for two different periods (5 and 21 days). Birds which received either 5- or 19-IU insulin significantly increased their feed intake over those of the controls (P less than 0.05). However, the lower insulin dose was found to be more effective in increasing both the feed consumption and weight gain of the birds, especially if administered for a long period. Between the injection periods, the high insulin dose seemed to have a greater carry-over effect. On the other hand, the administration of 5- or 10-IU insulin for either 5 or 21 days had no effect on efficiency.  相似文献
