Carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) was measured in irrigated and droughted potato. Under irrigation, Δ in leaflets at given nodes increased (P < 0.001) between 21 and 63 d after emergence (DAE), which was attributed to increasing stomatal conductance (gs) during leaf expansion. The effect of leaf position on Δ was non-significant in mature leaves. Under drought, Δ decreased (P < 0.001) in successive leaves up the stem, reflecting changes in gs and water stress. At each node Δ remained constant or decreased, suggesting that effects of water stress were greater than changes with leaf expansion. There were significant differences in Δ between cultivars in both treatments, and in the progressive decrease in Δ up the stem under drought. Differences in Δ between cultivars were consistent with differences in stomatal control of leaf water status following water stress. Values for Δ in tubers were consistently lower than in stem and leaf, and decreased more rapidly. Differences in Δ between cultivars did not reflect dry matter production in either treatment, and differences in water use were non-significant between cultivars under drought. So, plants can achieve similar dry matter production through different growth strategies when irrigated or droughted, and Δ does not provide a simple, indirect method of selecting for dry matter production under water stress.  相似文献

Water-use efficiency is thought to be related to plant performance and natural selection for plants in arid habitats, based on a general expectation that increased water-use efficiency is associated with decreased carbon gain and biomass accumulation. Using leaf carbon isotope discrimination Δ to determine integrated water-use efficiency, we estimated genetic variance for, and examined the relationships among Δ, biomass, and gas exchange characters for full-sibling families of the woody shrub, Chrysothamnus nauseosus, grown from seed collected at Tintic, Utah. In both well-watered greenhouse and common garden experiments, and water-limited common garden experiments, there were significant family differences for Δ, biomass, and morphological characters, indicating a potential for genetic change in response to selection. However, estimates of broad-sense heritabilities for Δ were low, indicating that the rate of change in response to selection would be relatively slow. This was consistent with the large amount of phenotypic plasticity observed for Δ as it differed with water treatment and year in the garden experiment. Phenotypically, aboveground biomass and Δ were negatively correlated within the well-watered treatments (i.e., more water-use efficient plants were larger), not correlated within the water-limited treatment, and positively correlated for combined well-watered and water-limited garden treatments, suggesting that variation in both photosynthetic capacity and stomatal limitation contribute to the variation in Δ. In contrast to the phenotypic correlations, genetic correlations for biomass and Δ were consistently negative within each treatment, and selection for higher water-use efficiency through low Δ for C. nauseosus plants in this population would tend to shift populations toward larger plants. For C. nauseosus, increased water-use efficiency is not necessarily associated with decreased carbon gain.  相似文献

Mustard (Sinapis alba L.), Argentine canola (Brassica napus L. cv. Westar), Polish canola (Brassica campestris L. cv. Tobin), pea (Pisum sativum L.), durum wheat (Triticum durum L. cv. Kyle) and soft wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Fielder) were grown at Outlook, Saskatchewan, Canada, under irrigated and dryland conditions. Carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) and water-use efficiency (W), defined as grams of above ground dry matter produced per kilogram water used, were negatively correlated in the six field-grown crops. In irrigated plants Δ remained relatively constant (20–21‰) throughout the growing season. However, in dryland plants, Δ declined in response to the progressive depletion of stored soil water (Polish canola, 20-2-18-8‰; mustard, 19.9–18 5‰; pea, 19.9–17 2‰ durum wheat, 19.7–16.4‰; Argentine canola, 19.4–17.6‰; soft wheat, 19.0–17.4‰). Although there were genetic differences in Δ among the species, water availability was the major factor controlling Δ.  相似文献

Mycorrhizal responses of barley cultivars differing in P efficiency   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The purpose of this study was to investigate how barley cultivars which are different in dry matter yield at low phosphorus (P) supply (i.e. they differ in agronomic P efficiency) respond to mycorrhizal infection. In a preliminary experiment, six mycorrhizal fungi were tested for their ability to colonize barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) roots at a soil temperature of 15°C.Glomus etunicatum was the most effective species and was used in the main experiment. The main experiment was conducted under glasshouse conditions in which soil temperature was maintained at 15°C. Treatments consisted of a factorial arrangement of 8 barley cultivars, 2 mycorrhiza (inoculated and non-inoculated), and 3 rates of P (0, 10 and 20 mg kg-1). P utilization efficiency (dry matter yield per unit of P taken up) and agronomic P efficiency among the barley cultivars was significantly negatively correlated with mycorrhizal responses. However, the response to mycorrhizal infection was positively correlated with response to P application. Poor correlation was observed between P concentration when neither mycorrhiza nor P were supplied and the percentage of root length infected. The extent of mycorrhizal infection among the barley cultivars in soil without P amendment varied from 8.6 to 28.6%. Significant interactions between cultivar and P addition, and between mycorrhiza and P addition were observed for shoot dry weight but not root dry weight.  相似文献

The relative effect of diffusional resistance due to water films (rwf) and leaf anatomy (rp) on rates of net photosynthesis and on-line measures of carbon isotope discrimination (Δ=Δδ13C) was investigated in Sphagnum. Sphagnum species differ in the exposure of photosynthetic cells at the leaf surface. In S. affine, photosynthetic cells are widely exposed at the surface, whereas in S. magellanicum, photo-synthetic cells are enclosed within water-filled hyaline cells. This difference is expected to lead to variation in diffusive resistance within leaves (rp). Net photosynthesis and on-line Δ were measured at two water contents: greenhouse water content (wet) and blotted dry (dry). Without correcting for respiration, on-line Δ values differed significantly between wet (23.7%o) and dry (30.9%o) plants. However, there was no significant difference between species means and no species × water content interaction. Corrections for respiration lowered Δ values by approximately 8.1%o and reduced the mean difference to 3.1%o, but did not alter the rank order of treatments. Net photosynthesis also decreased by 16% in wet plants, but there was no significant difference between the two species. In addition, five populations of S. affine and S. magellanicum grown in a common garden were analysed for their organic matter carbon isotope composition (δ13C). These values varied more within each species (0.9–1.2%o) than between the two species (0.6%o). Therefore, we conclude that variation in surface water films leads to a greater difference in resistance to CO2 uptake and carbon isotope discrimination than that due to variation in leaf anatomical properties in Sphagnum.  相似文献

The effect of humidity on the gas exchange of leaves of the dicotyledons soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis (L.) Schneider), and saltbush (Atriplex halimus L.) and the monocotyledons wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.) was examined under conditions of adequate soil moisture in a controlled environment. Photosynthesis and stomatal and internal diffusion resistances of whole, attached, single leaves were not affected by changes in humidity as the vapour pressure deficit between the leaf and atmosphere ranged from 8 to 27 mb. Transpiration increased linearly with increasing vapour pressure deficit. Whole plants of barley exhibited a different response. As humidity was increased, photosynthesis increased, transpiration expressed per unit of vapour pressure difference increased, and diffusion resistances became smaller. Reasons for the different behaviour of single leaves and whole plants are suggested. An index for water use efficiency, expressed per millibar of vapour pressure deficit, was calculated for single leaves of each species used in the experiments. This showed that water use efficiency was highest in the C4 xerophytes and lowest in the C3 mesophytes. The effect of environment on water use efficiency is examined using data from the literature.  相似文献

An investigation was carried out to find out the extent of changes occurred in two safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) cultivars in response to water deficit stress. Two safflower cultivars namely IL.111 and Isfahan were used for the study. Thirty days after sowing, plants were grown under soil moisture corresponding to 100, 85, 70 and 55% field capacity for next 30 days. Water deficit treatments significantly decreased the shoot length, shoot dry matter, root dry matter, relative growth rate, leaf relative water content (LRWC) and leaf water potential (ΨW), whereas root length, root-to-shoot ratio, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant compounds such as ascorbic acid (AA), α-tocopherol (α-Toc) and reduced glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6), and peroxidase (POX, EC 1.11.1.7) activities were increased. Water deficit stressed plants maintained higher levels of compounds and scavenging enzymes. Significant differences were observed between cultivars and irrigation levels treatments. The cv. IL.111 could be considered more tolerant to water stress than cv. Isfahan, registering greater biomass, LRWC and leaf water potential (ΨW), associated with high antioxidant activity.  相似文献

Ten groundnut genotypes were grown under adequately irrigated conditions or subjected to drought during the pod filling phase (83–113 days after sowing) in a medium deep Alfisol at the ICRISAT Centre during the 1986–1987 post-rainy season. Crop growth was measured in both treatments, but transpiration (7) and water-use efficiency (W) were quantified only in the drought treatment. Leaf samples from both treatments were assayed for discrimination against 13CO2 fixed in leaves (Δ) to examine the relationships between Δ, crop growth, and W under field conditions. The shoot dry matter accumulated during the period of drought (Y) ranged from 72–150 g m-2 and was closely related to transpiration. This indicates scope for selection of traits and practices to increase T. Water-use efficiencies ranged from 1.38–2.50 g kg-1 and were inversely related to Δ in eight out of the 10 genotypes. For the other two genotypes, there was evidence that T was underestimated by field measurements. Water-use efficiency and transpiration were not correlated suggesting that these two traits might be combined through breeding. Variation between genotypes was greatest for the partitioning of total dry matter to pods (73%), followed by water-use efficiency (31%) and transpiration (29%). Crop growth rates were negatively related to Δ under irrigated conditions but not under drought.  相似文献

Three types of observations were used to test the hypothesis that the response of stomatal conductance to a change in vapour pressure deficit is controlled by whole-leaf transpiration rate or by feedback from leaf water potential. Varying the leaf water potential of a measured leaf by controlling the transpiration rate of other leaves on the plant did not affect the response of stomatal conductance to vapour pressure deficit in Glycine max. In three species, stomatal sensitivity to vapour pressure deficit was eliminated when measurements were made at near-zero carbon dioxide concentrations, despite the much higher transpiration rates of leaves at low carbon dioxide. In Abutilon theophrasti, increasing vapour pressure deficit sometimes resulted in both decreased stomatal conductance and a lower transpiration rate even though the response of assimilation rate to the calculated substomatal carbon dioxide concentration indicated that there was no ‘patchy’ stomatal closure at high vapour pressure deficit in this case. These results are not consistent with stomatal closure at high vapour pressure deficit caused by increased whole-leaf transpiration rate or by lower leaf water potential. The lack of response of conductance to vapour pressure deficit in carbon dioxide-free air suggests that abscisic acid may mediate the response.  相似文献

Stem diameter increments of the broadleaved deciduous tree species Tabebuia chrysantha were measured with high-resolution dendrometers in a tropical lower montane forest and in a dry forest in southern Ecuador, the latter showing a distinct dry season. Those analyses were complemented by wood anatomical studies on regularly collected microcores to determine the season of active cambial growth and the time of formation of annual growth boundaries. The length of the cambial active period varied between 3 and 7 months at the tropical lower montane forest and 2 and 4 months in the dry forest, respectively. During dry days, amplitudes of daily stem diameter variations correlated with vapour pressure deficit. During October and November, inter-annual climate variations may lead to dry and sunny conditions in the tropical lower montane forest, causing water deficit and stem diameter shrinkage in T. chrysantha. The results of the climate–growth analysis show a positive relationship between tree growth and rainfall as well as vapour pressure deficit in certain periods of the year, indicating that rainfall plays a major role for tree growth.  相似文献

Summary The responses of photosynthesis, transpiration and leaf conductance to changes in vapour pressure deficit were followed in well-watered plants of the herbaceous species, Helianthus annuus, Helianthus nuttallii, Pisum sativum and Vigna unguiculata, and in the woody species having either sclerophyllous leaves, Arbutus unedo, Nerium oleander and Pistacia vera, or mesomorphic leaves, Corylus avellana, Gossypium hirsutum and Prunus dulcis. When the vapour pressure deficit of the air around a single leaf in a cuvette was varied from 10 to 30 Pa kPa-1 in 5 Pa kPa-1 steps, while holding the remainder of the plant at a vapour presure deficit of 10 Pa kPa-1, the leaf conductance and net photosynthetic rate of the leaf decreased in all species. The rate of transpiration increased initially with increase in vapour pressure deficit in all species, but in several species a maximum transpiration rate was observed at 20 to 25 Pa kPa-1. Concurrent measurements of the leaf water potential by in situ psychrometry showed that an increase in the vapour pressure deficit decreased the leaf water potential in all species. The decrease was greatest in woody species, and least in herbaceous species. When the vapour pressure deficit around the remainder of the plant was increased while the leaf in the cuvette was exposed to a low and constant vapour pressure deficit, similar responses in both degree and magnitude in the rates of transpiration and leaf conductance were observed in the remainder of the plant as those occurring when the vapour pressure deficit around the single leaf was varied. Increasing the external vapour pressure deficit lowered the water potential of the leaf in the cuvette in the woody species and induced a decrease in leaf conductance in some, but not all, speies. The decrease in leaf conductance with decreasing water potential was greater in the woody species when the vapour pressure deficit was increased than when it remained low and constant, indicating that changing the leaf-to-air vapour pressure difference had a direct effect on the stomata in these species. The low hydraulic resistance and maintenance of a high leaf water potential precluded such an analysis in the herbaceous species. We conclude that at least in the woody species studied, an increase in the vapour pressure deficit around a leaf will decrease leaf gas exchange through a direct effect on the leaf epidermis and sometimes additionally through a lowering of the mesophyll water potential.  相似文献

Wild emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum spp. dicoccoides (Körn.) Thell.), the tetraploid progenitor of cultivated wheat, is a potential source for various agronomical traits, including drought resistance. The objectives of this study were to characterize (1) the genetic diversity for drought resistance in wild emmer wheat, and (2) the relationship between drought responses of the wild emmer germplasm and the ecogeographical parameters of its collection sites. A total of 110 wild emmer accessions consisting of 25 populations and three control durum wheat cultivars were examined under two irrigation regimes, well-watered (’wet’) and water-limited (’dry’). Wide genetic diversity was found both between and within the wild emmer populations in most variables under each treatment. A considerable number of the wild emmer accessions exhibited an advantage in productivity (spike and total dry matter) over their cultivated counterparts. Most wild emmer wheat accessions exhibited a greater carbon isotope ratio (δ13C, indicating higher water-use efficiency) under the dry treatment and higher plasticity of δ13C relative to the cultivated controls, which may have contributed to the drought adaptations in the former. The most outstanding drought-tolerance capacity (in term of productivity under the dry treatment and susceptibility indices) was detected in wild emmer populations originated from hot dry locations. The results suggest that wild emmer has the potential to improve drought resistance in cultivated wheat.  相似文献

Foliar carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) of C3 plants decreases in water‐deficit situations as discrimination by the photosynthetic primary carboxylation reaction decreases. This diminished Δ in leaves under water deficit can be used as a tracer to study whole plant carbon allocation patterns. Carbon isotope composition (δ13C value) of leaf hot water extracts or leaf tissue sap represents a short‐term integral of leaf carbon isotope discrimination and thus represents the δ13C value of source carbon that may be distributed within a plant in water‐deficit situations. By plotting the δ13C values of source carbon against the δ13C values of sink tissues, such as roots or stems, it is possible to assess carbon allocation to and incorporation into sink organs in relation to already present biomass. This natural abundance labelling method has been tested in three independent experiments, a one‐year field study with the fruit tree species Ziziphus mauritiana and peach (Prunus persica), a medium‐term drought stress experiment with Ziziphus rotundifolia trees in the glasshouse, and a short‐term drought stress experiment with soybean (Glycine max). The data show that the natural abundance labelling method can be applied to qualitatively assess carbon allocation in drought‐stressed plants. Although it is not possible to estimate exact fluxes of assimilated carbon during water deficit the method represents an easy to use tool to study integrated plant adaptations to drought stress. In addition, it is a less laborious method that can be applied in field studies as well as in controlled experiments, with plants from any developmental stage.  相似文献

The combined effects of soil water deficit and above and below ground interspecific plant competition on the growth, water-use efficiency (WUE), and measured carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) values of white clover and ryegrass were studied. White clover and ryegrass were grown in specially designed crates 1) individually; 2) in shoot competition; or 3) in shoot + root competition and either well-watered or at a moderate or severe soil water deficit. The effects of shoot + root competition on shoot dry matter growth were substantial and benefited both white clover and ryegrass when well-watered or at a moderate soil water deficit, while severely reducing white clover shoot dry matter growth at severe soil water deficit. Plant competition did not affect the WUE of white clover or ryegrass. As soil water deficit increased, the WUE of white clover did not change whereas the WUE of ryegrass increased and was greater than that of white clover. This was attributed to the lower leaf water conductance of ryegrass which conserved water and maintained growth longer compared to white clover. A stronger correlation existed between soil water deficit and measured δ13C values for ryegrass at each plant competition level (P<0.001) than existed for white clover (individual: P<0.01; shoot + root: P<0.001; shoot: P<0.10). Unlike white clover, the relationship between measured δ13C values and shoot dry matter growth indicated that C assimilation for ryegrass was dependent on type of plant competition. That WUE remained constant for white clover while measured δ13C values increased as soil water deficit increased, suggests that the role below ground respiration rate played in determining δ13C values increased. The WUE of white clover appears to be independent of the nature of the competition between plants and the soil water deficit level at which it is grown, whereas for ryegrass, the addition of root competition to shoot competition should lead to increases in its WUE. A series of experiments from 1978 to 1983 investigated the activity of triadimefon vapour against barley powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei). In early experiments there was a pronounced protectant action when the dry product was used as the vapour source, and this protection persisted after test seedlings had been removed from the vicinity of the vapour source. In a glasshouse, sprayed seedlings remained sources of active vapour for at least 6 wk after spraying. In later experiments, effects of triadimefon vapour were much smaller, probably because the pathogen had become less sensitive to the fungicide. The dry product was no longer an effective vapour source but infection of test seedlings was still decreased if they were exposed to vapour emanating from impregnated absorbent paper or sprayed seedlings, presumably because the effective surface areas were much greater. Possible benefits and problems that arise from vapour action in glasshouse and field experiments are discussed.  相似文献

Carbon-13 abundance, expressed as δ13C in ‰, was measured in wheat straw grown between 1984 and 1989 on the Broadbalk Continuous Wheat Experiment at Rothamsted. In all six years, straw grown without fertilizer N contained less carbon-13 (i.e.δ13C was more negative) than straw grown with fertilizer, although the magnitude of this difference varied with year. In a dry year, when dry matter response to fertilizer N was relatively small, there was a large difference between the δ13C of straw grown with and without N. Conversely, in a wet year, when there was a marked response to N, there was little difference in the isotopic composition of N-fertilized and unfertilized straw. Over the six years, the difference between the δ13C value of straw grown with and without nitrogen (D 13C, in ‰) was related to drought, measured as the calculated soil water deficit on 15 July (Wj, in mm), by the equation D 13C=−0.299+0.01034 Wj (r=0.87). Changes in climatic characteristics such as seasonal and inter-annual variability may affect ecosystem structure and function, hence alter carbon and water budgets of ecosystems. Studies of modelling combined with field experiments can provide essential information to investigate interactions between carbon and water cycles and climate. Here we present a first attempt to investigate the long-term climate controls on seasonal patterns and inter-annual variations in water and carbon exchanges in an arid-zone savanna-woodland ecosystem using a detailed mechanistic soil–plant–atmosphere model (SPA), driven by leaf area index (LAI) simulated by an ecohydrological model (WAVES) and observed climate data during 1981–2012. The SPA was tested against almost 3 years of eddy covariance flux measurements in terms of gross primary productivity (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET). The model was able to explain 80 and 71% of the variability of observed daily GPP and ET, respectively. Long-term simulations showed that carbon accumulation rates and ET ranged from 20.6 g C m?2 mon?1 in the late dry season to 45.8 g C m?2 mon?1 in the late wet season, respectively, primarily driven by seasonal variations in LAI and soil moisture. Large climate variations resulted in large seasonal variation in ecosystem water-use efficiency (eWUE). Simulated annual GPP varied between 146.4 and 604.7 g C m?2 y?1. Variations in annual ET coincided with that of GPP, ranging from 110.2 to 625.8 mm y?1. Annual variations in GPP and ET were driven by the annual variations in precipitation and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) but not temperature. The linear coupling of simulated annual GPP and ET resulted in eWUE having relatively small year-to-year variation.  相似文献

In Mediterranean regions drought is the major factor limiting spring barley and durum wheat grain yields. This study aimed to compare spring barley and durum wheat root and shoot responses to drought and quantify relationships between root traits and water uptake under terminal drought. One spring barley(Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Rum) and two durum wheat Mediterranean cultivars(Triticum turgidum L. var durum cvs Hourani and Karim) were examined in soil‐column experiments under well watered and drought conditions. Root system architecture traits, water uptake, and plant growth were measured. Barley aerial biomass and grain yields were higher than for durum wheat cultivars in well watered conditions. Drought decreased grain yield more for barley(47%) than durum wheat(30%, Hourani). Root‐to‐shoot dry matter ratio increased for durum wheat under drought but not for barley, and root weight increased for wheat in response todrought but decreased for barley. The critical root length density(RLD) and root volume density(RVD) for 90% available water capture for wheat were similar to(cv. Hourani) or lower than(cv. Karim) for barley depending on wheat cultivar. For both species, RVD accounted for a slightly higher proportion of phenotypic variation in water uptake under drought than RLD.  相似文献

Abstract The dynamic response of stomata to changes in atmospheric humidity was investigated in Fragaria × ananassa Duch., Picea engelmannii Parry, and Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco; and the effect of water stress on this response was determined in Pseudotsuga menziesii. The plants were rotated through three regimes of ambient temperature and vapour pressure deficit: 35°C–3. 5kPa, 35°C–0. 5 kPa, and 20°C–1. 5kPa. Branch and leaflet conductance were measured with a steady-state porometer, first at ambient vapour pressure deficit and then at one of four treatment conditions achieved by increasing or decreasing vapour pressure within the porometer cuvette. All three species showed similar stomatal response: enhanced conductance at low vapour pressure deficit and depressed conductance at high vapour pressure deficit. Engelmann spruce was more sensitive than Douglas fir and strawberry. Plant water status significantly altered stomatal response to vapour pressure deficit. The relationship of conductance of xylem water potential was linear under ambient conditions but became curvilinear when conductance was measured above and below ambient vapour pressure deficit. Between ?0. 5 MPa and ?2. 0 MPa xylem water potential, the stomata were sensitive to vapour pressure deficit, but below ? 2. 0 MPa, the sensitivity decreased.  相似文献

Variation in carbon isotope composition (δ13C), water-use efficiency (WUE) and biomass productivity were compared among three populations of Eucalyptus microtheca F. Muell. in a greenhouse. Seedlings were maintained under one well-watered (Control, keeping the soil at field capacity) and two different water deficit conditions (Drought stress I, keeping the same soil water content; Drought stress II, keeping the same soil water supply). In each treatment, significant population differences in δ13C, WUE, and dry matter accumulation and allocation were detected. A negative correlation between WUE and biomass productivity was detected under control and drought stress I, but a positive correlation under drought stress II. The results suggested that there were different water-use strategies among the populations, the southeastern population with lower WUE may employ a prodigal water-use strategy, whereas the northwestern and central populations with higher WUE may employ a conservative water-use strategy. This knowledge may be useful as criteria for genotype selection within a breeding program for this species.
