Objective: Our objective was to determine the association between physical activity and BMI among racially diverse low‐income preschoolers. Research Methods and Procedures: This was a cross‐sectional study of 2‐ to 5‐year‐olds (n = 56) enrolled in Massachusetts Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC). Physical activity was measured for 7 consecutive days with an accelerometer. Height and weight were obtained from WIC records, and BMI‐for‐age percentiles were calculated based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) 2000 Growth Charts. At‐risk‐for‐overweight (BMI‐for‐age of ≥85th to <95th percentile) and overweight (BMI‐for‐age ≥95th percentile) groups were combined and referred to as overweight. Final analysis inclusion criteria were: completion of 4.5 days of activity assessment and anthropometric data obtained within 90 and 120 days of the activity assessment for children ages 24 to 35.99 and 36 to 59.99 months, respectively. Results: Overweight children had significantly lower mean daily very vigorous minutes (VVM) (2.6 mins vs. 4.6 mins, p < 0.05) and lower very active minutes (VAM) [i.e., sum of vigorous minutes (VM) and VVM] per day (22.9 mins vs. 32.1 mins, p < 0.05) than children who were not overweight. Daily VVM [odds ratio (OR) = 0.68; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.49 to 0.96], VM (OR = 0.94; CI, 0.88 to 1.00), and VAM (OR = 0.94; 95% CI, 0.89 to 1.00) were all associated with significantly lower odds of being overweight. Discussion: This study suggests that, in a diverse group of preschoolers, vigorous and very vigorous activity are associated with lower odds of overweight. However, these findings require corroboration in a diverse sample of preschoolers using a longitudinal design.  相似文献

Evidence that children maintain some memories of labels that are unlikely to be shared by the broader linguistic community suggests that children’s selective learning is not an all-or-none phenomenon. Across three experiments, we examine the contexts in which 24-month-olds show selective learning and whether they adjust their selective learning if provided with cues of in-context relevance. In each experiment, toddlers were first familiarized with a source who acted on familiar objects in either typical or atypical ways (e.g., used a car to mimic driving or hop like a rabbit) or labeled familiar objects incorrectly (e.g., called a spoon a “brush”). The source then labeled unfamiliar objects using either a novel word (e.g., fep; Experiment 1) or sound (e.g., ring; Experiments 2 and 3). Results indicated that toddlers learnt words from the typical source but not from the atypical or inaccurate source. In contrast, toddlers extended sound labels only when a source who had previously acted atypically provided the sound labels. Thus, toddlers, like preschoolers, avoid forming semantic representations of new object labels that are unlikely to be relevant in the broader community, but will form event-based memories of such labels if they have reason to suspect such labels will have in-context relevance.  相似文献

Background

The aim of the current study was to compare levels of energy balance-related behaviours (physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and dietary behaviours (more specifically water consumption, sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and unhealthy snacking)) in four- to six-year-old preschoolers from six European countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Poland, and Spain) within the ToyBox cross-sectional study.

Methods

A sample of 4,045 preschoolers (4.77 ± 0.43 years; 52.2% boys) had valid physical activity data (steps per day), parents of 8,117 preschoolers (4.78 ± 0.46 years; 53.0% boys) completed a parental questionnaire with questions on sedentary behaviours (television viewing, computer use, and quiet play), and parents of 7,244 preschoolers (4.77 ± 0.44 years; 52.0% boys) completed a food frequency questionnaire with questions on water consumption, sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and unhealthy snacking.

Results

The highest levels of physical activity were found in Spain (12,669 steps/day on weekdays), while the lowest levels were found in Bulgaria and Greece (9,777 and 9,656 steps/day on weekdays, respectively). German preschoolers spent the least amount of time in television viewing (43.3 min/day on weekdays), while Greek preschoolers spent the most time in television viewing (88.5 min/day on weekdays). A considerable amount of time was spent in quiet play in all countries, with the highest levels in Poland (104.9 min/day on weekdays), and the lowest levels in Spain (60.4 min/day on weekdays). Belgian, German, and Polish preschoolers had the lowest intakes of water and the highest intakes of sugar-sweetened beverages. The intake of snacks was the highest in Belgian preschoolers (73.1 g/day) and the lowest in Greek preschoolers (53.3 g/day).

Conclusions

Across six European countries, differences in preschoolers’ energy balance-related behaviours were found. Future interventions should target European preschoolers’ energy balance-related behaviours simultaneously, but should apply country-specific adaptations.  相似文献

A comparison is made of data on the level of development of play activity and its influence on the volitional behavior of today's preschoolers and the preschoolers of the 1940s–1950s. The results of the comparison point to a substantial decrease in the level of narrative role-playing among children today. The study reproduces the widely known experiment of Z.V. Manuilenko (1948). The comparison of data on preschoolers of the mid-twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first shows a significant decrease in the level of volitional behavior in both play and nonplay situations. The results suggest that primitive, underdeveloped play cannot define a zone of proximal development and fulfill the status of primary activity.  相似文献

Background

Data on objectively measured physical activity (PA) in preschoolers are controversial. Direct accelerometry was performed in children aged 3–6 years, and differences in PA patterns over the course of the week were evaluated. Data were analyzed with gender, BMI, lifestyle, and socioeconomic parameters as covariates.

Methods

PA was measured in 119 children by the SensewearPro® accelerometer and analyzed in the 92 (40 girls) that wore it for at least 4 days including one day of the weekend. Median measuring time in this group was 7 consecutive days (median/mean daily measuring time: 23.5 h/d and 21.8 h/d, respectively), corresponding to 834,000 analyzed minutes. PA questionnaires were completed by 103 parents and 87 preschool teachers to collect anthropometric, lifestyle, and socioeconomic data.

Results

Median daily PA (MET>3) was 4.3 hours (mean: 4.4 hours). Boys spent an estimated 52 min/week more being very active (MET>6) than girls (95% CI [6, 96] min/week, p = 0.02). PA was lower during the weekend (3.7 h/d) compared to weekdays (4.5 h/d), p = 3×10−6), where a 95% CI for the difference is [0.5, 1.0] h/d. PA levels did not differ between overweight/obese children (median 4.7 h/d) and normal-weight peers (median 4.2 h/d). Daily media consumption increased with decreasing social class on weekdays (p = 0.05) and during the weekend (p = 0.01), but was not related to the amount of daily PA. A multivariate regression with BMI-SDS as independent variable and gender, age, amount of PA>6 MET, parental BMI, media time and socioeconomic status as explanatory variables revealed that only SES had a significant contribution.

Conclusion

The negative impact of obesity-promoting factors in older children is rather low for preschoolers, but there is evidently a gradient in PA between weekdays and weekends already in this age group. Weight status of preschoolers is already considerably influenced by SES, but not physical activity levels.  相似文献

Regularities are gradually represented in cortex after extensive experience [1], and yet they can influence behavior after minimal exposure [2, 3]. What kind of representations support such rapid statistical learning? The medial temporal lobe (MTL) can represent information from even a single experience [4], making it a good candidate system for assisting in initial learning about regularities. We combined anatomical segmentation of the MTL, high-resolution fMRI, and multivariate pattern analysis to identify representations of objects in cortical and hippocampal areas of human MTL, assessing how these representations were shaped by exposure to regularities. Subjects viewed a continuous visual stream containing hidden temporal relationships-pairs of objects that reliably appeared nearby in time. We compared the pattern of blood oxygen level-dependent activity evoked by each object before and after this exposure, and found that perirhinal cortex, parahippocampal cortex, subiculum, CA1, and CA2/CA3/dentate gyrus (CA2/3/DG) encoded regularities by increasing the representational similarity of their constituent objects. Most regions exhibited bidirectional associative shaping, whereas CA2/3/DG represented regularities in a forward-looking predictive manner. These findings suggest that object representations in MTL come to mirror the temporal structure of the environment, supporting rapid and incidental statistical learning.  相似文献

Learning science vocabulary is an often tedious but important component of many curricula. Frequently, students are expected to learn science vocabulary indirectly, but this method can hinder the success of lower-performing students (Carlisle, Fleming, and Gudbrandsen 2000). We have developed an inquiry-based vocabulary activity wherein students explore how new words apply to familiar objects, piquing their interest in the words’ meanings, prior to direct instruction. Groups of students were asked to apply new vocabulary words to familiar objects set up at various rotation stations. The students were encouraged to play with the objects, discuss answers with their group, and write down the vocabulary words they thought best described each object. Since the words were new to the students, there was no credit for correct answers, making the students comfortable exploring a new topic. After the rotation stations, we led students in a discussion of their answers and followed up with direct instruction on the words’ definitions. Here we give three examples of this activity used in our physical science classroom—one each for energy, simple machines, and force vocabulary—but this activity can easily be modified for biology and Earth science curricula.  相似文献

Flexible representations of dynamics are used in object manipulation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
To manipulate an object skillfully, the brain must learn its dynamics, specifying the mapping between applied force and motion. A fundamental issue in sensorimotor control is whether such dynamics are represented in an extrinsic frame of reference tied to the object or an intrinsic frame of reference linked to the arm. Although previous studies have suggested that objects are represented in arm-centered coordinates [1-6], all of these studies have used objects with unusual and complex dynamics. Thus, it is not known how objects with natural dynamics are represented. Here we show that objects with simple (or familiar) dynamics and those with complex (or unfamiliar) dynamics are represented in object- and arm-centered coordinates, respectively. We also show that objects with simple dynamics are represented with an intermediate coordinate frame when vision of the object is removed. These results indicate that object dynamics can be flexibly represented in different coordinate frames by the brain. We suggest that with experience, the representation of the dynamics of a manipulated object may shift from a coordinate frame tied to the arm toward one that is linked to the object. The additional complexity required to represent dynamics in object-centered coordinates would be economical for familiar objects because such a representation allows object use regardless of the orientation of the object in hand.  相似文献

Active exploration of large-scale environments leads to better learning of spatial layout than does passive observation [1] [2] [3]. But active exploration might also help us to remember the appearance of individual objects in a scene. In fact, when we encounter new objects, we often manipulate them so that they can be seen from a variety of perspectives. We present here the first evidence that active control of the visual input in this way facilitates later recognition of objects. Observers who actively rotated novel, three-dimensional objects on a computer screen later showed more efficient visual recognition than observers who passively viewed the exact same sequence of images of these virtual objects. During active exploration, the observers focused mainly on the 'side' or 'front' views of the objects (see also [4] [5] [6]). The results demonstrate that how an object is represented for later recognition is influenced by whether or not one controls the presentation of visual input during learning.  相似文献

The visual system is constantly faced with the problem of identifying partially occluded objects from incomplete images cast on the retinae. Phenomenologically, the visual system seems to fill in missing information by interpolating illusory and occluded contours at points of occlusion, so that we perceive complete objects. Previous behavioural [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] and physiological [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] studies suggest that the visual system treats illusory and occluded contours like luminance-defined contours in many respects. None of these studies has, however, directly shown that illusory and occluded contours are actually used to perform perceptual tasks. Here, we use a response-classification technique [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] to answer this question directly. This technique provides pictorial representations - 'classification images' - that show which parts of a stimulus observers use to make perceptual decisions, effectively deriving behavioural receptive fields. Here we show that illusory and occluded contours appear in observers' classification images, providing the first direct evidence that observers use perceptually interpolated contours to recognize objects. These results offer a compelling demonstration of how visual processing acts on completed representations, and illustrate a powerful new technique for constraining models of visual completion.  相似文献

Biederman et al. [1, 2] have shown that the priming effect does not depend on the difference between the angular sizes of the test stimulus and the primer. However, these two and other similar studies investigated only a small range of the angular sizes of stimuli. Vakhrameeva et al. [3] have shown that there exist two perceptionally different size ranges: perception of the objects with an angular size varying between 1–1.5 and 50 degrees was found to be invariant, but for the objects whose angular size is less than 1–1.5 degrees, their perception is no longer invariant. In this study, the presence of the priming effect has been investigated in the match-to-sample task with such a difference in the angular sizes of the primer and test stimuli that the sizes of the primer (about 4 degrees) and the test stimulus (about 0.5 degrees) belonged to two different size ranges. The sample stimulus was presented with and without noise superposition. It has been shown that the priming effect is suppressed when the size difference between the primer and the test stimulus is large. A congruent primer can have a positive impact on the recognition of the test objects, but this occurs under the viewing conditions complicated by noise superposition.  相似文献

Plasma levels and redox status of coenzyme Q10 in infants and children   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
INTRODUCTION: Increased attention has been paid to the role of lipophilic antioxidants in childhood nutrition and diseases during recent years. The lipophilic antioxidant coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is known as an effective inhibitor of oxidative damage. In contrast to other lipophilic antioxidants like alpha-tocopherol the plasma concentrations of CoQ10 in childhood are poorly researched. The aim of this study was to determine plasma level and redox status (oxidized form in total CoQ10 in %) of CoQ10 in clinically healthy infants, preschoolers and school-aged children. METHODS: Plasma level and redox status of CoQ10 were measured by HPLC in 199 clinically healthy children, three groups of infants [1st-4th month (n = 35), 5th-8th month (n = 25), 9th-12th month (n = 25) ], preschoolers (n = 60) and school-aged children (n = 54). The CoQ10 plasma levels were related to plasma cholesterol concentrations. The median and the 5th and 95th percentile were calculated. RESULTS: Plasma levels and redox status of CoQ10 in infants were significantly higher than in preschoolers and school-aged children. The CoQ10 redox status in the 1st-4th month was significantly increased when compared to the remaining subgroups of infants. In elder children the CoQ10 redox status stabilized. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study concerning age-related values of plasma level and redox status of CoQ10 in apparently healthy children. Decreased CoQ10 values could be involved in various pathological conditions affecting childhood. Therefore, the application of age-adjusted reference values may provide more specific criteria to define threshold values for CoQ10 deficiency in plasma.  相似文献

 Human beings are often able to read a letter or word partly occluded by contaminating ink stains. However, if the stains are completely erased and the occluded areas of the letter are changed to white, we usually have difficulty in reading the letter. In this article I propose a hypothesis explaining why a pattern is easier to recognize when it is occluded by visible objects than by invisible opaque objects. A neural network model is constructed based on this hypothesis. The visual system extracts various visual features from the input pattern and then attempts to recognize it. If the occluding objects are not visible, the visual system will have difficulty in distinguishing which features are relevant to the original pattern and which are newly generated by the occlusion. If the occluding objects are visible, however, the visual system can easily discriminate between relevant and irrelevant features and recognize the occluded pattern correctly. The proposed model is an extended version of the neocognitron model. The activity of the feature-extracting cells whose receptive fields cover the occluding objects is suppressed in an early stage of the hierarchical network. Since the irrelevant features generated by the occlusion are thus eliminated, the model can recognize occluded patterns correctly, provided the occlusion is not so large as to prevent recognition even by human beings. During meal events, a child's food can be contaminated through contacts with objects and surfaces, and/or unwashed hands that have chemical residues, increasing ingestion exposure of contaminants for the child. This is not surprising, given that very young children eat more with the hands than adults, are active, and play with toys and objects while eating. In addition, children's unwashed hands and toys are commonly inserted into their mouths during meal events, increasing exposure. By observing children during their meal events, information can be gathered on the frequency and duration of contacts between objects, foods, and hands, and the sequence of events before the hands, foods, or objects are inserted into the mouth. This article describes the process of refining a videotaping and video-translation methodology to capture micro-level activity time series (MLATS), in order to better quantify total exposure for young children as a result of their behavior during meal events and cross-contamination of foods and hands. These MLATS can be seen as detailed activity patterns that provide useful data, along with transfer coefficients and environmental concentration to estimate exposures.  相似文献

In natural environments that contain multiple sound sources, acoustic energy arising from the different sources sums to produce a single complex waveform at each of the listener's ears. The auditory system must segregate this waveform into distinct streams to permit identification of the objects from which the signals emanate [1]. Although the processes involved in stream segregation are now reasonably well understood [1, 2 and 3], little is known about the nature of our perception of complex auditory scenes. Here, we examined complex scene perception by having listeners detect a discrete change to an auditory scene comprising multiple concurrent naturalistic sounds. We found that listeners were remarkably poor at detecting the disappearance of an individual auditory object when listening to scenes containing more than four objects, but they performed near perfectly when their attention was directed to the identity of a potential change. In the absence of directed attention, this "change deafness" [4] was greater for objects arising from a common location in space than for objects separated in azimuth. Change deafness was also observed for changes in object location, suggesting that it may reflect a general effect of the dependence of human auditory perception on attention.  相似文献

Visual attention has been classically described as a spotlight that enhances the processing of a behaviorally relevant object. However, in many situations, humans and animals must simultaneously attend to several relevant objects separated by distracters. To account for this ability, various models of attention have been proposed including splitting of the attentional spotlight into multiple foci, zooming of the spotlight over a region of space, and switching of the spotlight among objects. We investigated this controversial issue by recording neuronal activity in visual area MT of two macaques while they attended to two translating objects that circumvented a third distracter object located inside the neurons' receptive field. We found that when the attended objects passed through or nearby the receptive field, neuronal responses to the distracter were either decreased or remained unaltered. These results demonstrate that attention can split into multiple spotlights corresponding to relevant objects while filtering out interspersed distracters.  相似文献

Neurons have a striking tendency to engage in oscillatory activities. One important type of oscillatory activity prevalent in the motor system occurs in the beta frequency band, at about 20 Hz. It is manifest during the maintenance of tonic contractions and is suppressed prior to and during voluntary movement [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] and [7]. This and other correlative evidence suggests that beta activity might promote tonic contraction, while impairing motor processing related to new movements [3], [8] and [9]. Hence, bursts of beta activity in the cortex are associated with a strengthening of the motor effects of sensory feedback during tonic contraction and with reductions in the velocity of voluntary movements [9], [10] and [11]. Moreover, beta activity is increased when movement has to be resisted or voluntarily suppressed [7], [12] and [13]. Here we use imperceptible transcranial alternating-current stimulation to entrain cortical activity at 20 Hz in healthy subjects and show that this slows voluntary movement. The present findings are the first direct evidence of causality between any physiological oscillatory brain activity and concurrent motor behavior in the healthy human and help explain how the exaggerated beta activity found in Parkinson's disease can lead to motor slowing in this illness [14].  相似文献
