The unusual idiosomal glands of a water mite Teutonia cometes (Koch 1837) were examined by means of transmission and scanning electron microscopy as well as on semi-thin sections. One pair of these glands is situated ventrally in the body cavity of the idiosoma. They run posteriorly from the terminal opening (distal end) on epimeres IV and gradually dilate to their proximal blind end. The terminal opening of each gland is armed with the two fine hair-like mechanoreceptive sensilla (‘pre-anal external’ setae). The proximal part of the glands is formed of columnar secretory epithelium with a voluminous central lumen containing a large single ‘globule’ of electron-dense secretory material. The secretory gland cells contain large nuclei and intensively developed rough endoplasmic reticulum. Secretory granules of Golgi origin are scattered throughout the cell volume in small groups and are discharged from the cells into the lumen between the scarce apical microvilli. The distal part of the glands is formed of another cell type that is not secretory. These cells are composed of narrow strips of the cytoplasm leaving the large intracellular vacuoles. A short excretory cuticular duct formed by special excretory duct cells connects the glands with the external medium. At the base of the terminal opening a cuticular funnel strengthens the gland termination. At the apex of this funnel a valve prevents back-flow of the extruded secretion. These glands, as other dermal glands of water mites, are thought to play a protective role and react to external stimuli with the help of the hair-like sensilla.  相似文献

A wall of funnels concentrates swimming bacteria   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
Randomly moving but self-propelled agents, such as Escherichia coli bacteria, are expected to fill a volume homogeneously. However, we show that when a population of bacteria is exposed to a microfabricated wall of funnel-shaped openings, the random motion of bacteria through the openings is rectified by tracking (trapping) of the swimming bacteria along the funnel wall. This leads to a buildup of the concentration of swimming cells on the narrow opening side of the funnel wall but no concentration of nonswimming cells. Similarly, we show that a series of such funnel walls functions as a multistage pump and can increase the concentration of motile bacteria exponentially with the number of walls. The funnel wall can be arranged along arbitrary shapes and cause the bacteria to form well-defined patterns. The funnel effect may also have implications on the transport and distribution of motile microorganisms in irregular confined environments, such as porous media, wet soil, or biological tissue, or act as a selection pressure in evolution experiments.  相似文献

Firing pattern of neuronal activity evoked by regular stimulation of monosynaptic inputs to the neurons is described with simple stochastic neuron model. The model gives definite possibilities for an indirect evaluation of transformation in the real neurons which have to fit the following demands: 1) background activity was absent; 2) evoked activity was stationary within the wide range of stimulation frequencies; 3) spike occurrence times were within narrow limits in relation to the nearest stimuli. Experimental data obtained on three types of monosynaptic connections with different intensity of excitatory postsynaptic effects are compared with the model.  相似文献

Fusarium head blight (FHB) of wheat, caused by Fusarium graminearum, is an important fungal disease in many wheat-growing areas of the world. The objectives of this study were to determine the relationship between width and duration of flower opening and incidence of FHB in wheat, and to identify DNA markers associated with narrow flower opening and low FHB incidence. It was hypothesized that wheat lines whose flowers open briefly and narrowly have a reduced risk of infection. To test the hypothesis, we crossed wheat cultivars Patterson and Goldfield to generate a population of 100 random F2-derived recombinant inbred lines (RILs). Florets of Patterson open wide; florets of Goldfield tend to stay closed. The population of RILs was characterized for FHB incidence and flower opening width (FOW) and duration in the F7:9 and F7:10 generations. Of the 305 simple sequence repeat primer pairs screened on the parents, 79 amplified polymorphic DNA bands. Pooled DNA from each of the two bulks was tested with these 79 SSR primer pairs. Four markers were found to have significant marker-trait association with low FHB incidence and narrow flower opening. The major QTL effect associated with narrow flower opening and low FHB incidence was found between the map interval Xbarc200Xgwm210, explaining 29% of the phenotypic variation for FHB incidence averaged over six replicated tests in Indiana in 2002 and 2003. This adds credence to the hypothesis that narrow flower opening is responsible for low FHB incidence in this population. Breeding wheat lines for both morphological avoidance, such as narrow flower opening, and physiological resistance to FHB may be valuable in future breeding research to reduce crop production and grain quality losses in wheat due to FHB.Contribution from Purdue University Agricultural Research Programs as Journal Article no. 17451  相似文献

Spatial summation is known to influence the magnitude of sensation for stationary cutaneous stimuli. Yet analysis of moving stimuli may also be pertinent, since most stimuli that attract our attention involve movements over the skin surface. The present investigation dealt with the importance of spatial summation for the appreciation of the direction of motion for moving stimuli.

The ability to detect the direction of motion was tested on the radial surface of the forearm with the two-alternative forced-choice method. Stimulation was performed with a rolling wheel, in order to exclude friction-generated activation of stretch receptors. Each subject was tested with two wheels with the same radius but different widths, 1 mm and 15 mm. On average, the subjects performed better with the wide wheel than with the narrow one for stimulation distances ≥ 16 mm. This value also probably exceeds the threshold distance for directional discrimination for the narrow wheel, which indicates that spatial summation improves suprathreshold performance.  相似文献

The ventral musculature of Convolutriloba longifissura (Acoela) has been studied using electron microscopy and fluorescently labeled whole mounts to demonstrate filamentous actin. Attention was directed to the reorganization and renewal of musculature during asexual reproduction and the adaptation of muscle sets for special predatory behavior. Three ventral subepidermal muscle layers could be distinguished in adult C. longifissura: (1) outer circular muscles that encircle the body, (2) intermediate modified longitudinal muscles with concentric pattern around the mouth and V-shaped orientation in the posterior part of the animal, and (3) inner special pore muscles with radial alignment fanning out from the mouth. Additionally, a few very fragile muscles were found at the anterior margin of the animal. The anterior ventral muscle system built a funnel with the mouth opening as organizing center. The special radial muscles and the antagonistically concentric muscles are perfectly adapted to catch prey in such a way that the funnel is put over the prey to press it through the mouth into the digestive syncytium. Convolutriloba longifissura shows a unique way of asexual reproduction by a two-step fission which results in three individuals. Immediately after separation from the mother animal, daughter individuals are missing the concentric and the radial muscle sets around the mouth completely, but within 30 h these sets are renewed for the most part. Two to three days after separation, the mouth opening is visible and the animals move for capturing prey. The peculiar course of longitudinal muscles in C. longifissura with concentric rings anteriorly and a V-shape muscle layer posteriorly shows that the pattern of body-wall musculature in such basal Plathelminthes as the Acoela may be highly modified from the original pattern of longitudinal and circular muscles.  相似文献

Stomatal guard cells have proven to be an attractive system for dissecting the mechanisms of stimulus-response coupling in plants. In this review we focus on the intracellular signal transduction pathways by which extracellular signals bring about closure and opening of the stomatal pore. It is proposed that guard cell signal transduction pathways may be organized into functional arrays or signalling cassettes that contain elements common to a number of converging signalling pathways. The purpose of these signalling cassettes may be to funnel extracellular signals down onto the ion transporters that control the fluxes of ions that underlie stomatal movements. Evidence is emerging that specificity in guard cell signalling may be, in part, encoded in complex spatio-temporal patterns of increases in the concentration of cytosolic-free calcium ([Ca2+]cyt). It is suggested that oscillations in [Ca2+]cyt may generate calcium signatures that encode information concerning the stimulus type and strength. New evidence is presented that suggests that these calcium signatures may integrate information when many stimuli are present.  相似文献

The laterophysic connection (LC) is an association between bilaterally paired, anterior swim bladder extensions (horns) and medial openings in the supracleithral lateral line canals that diagnoses butterflyfishes in the genus Chaetodon. It has been hypothesized that the LC makes the lateral line system sensitive to sound pressure stimuli that are transmitted by the swim bladder horns and converted to fluid flow into the lateral line system via a laterophysic tympanum. The purpose of this study was to define variation in the morphology of the LC, swim bladder and swim bladder horns among 41 Chaetodon species from all 11 Chaetodon subgenera and a species from each of four non-Chaetodon genera using gross dissection, histological analysis as well as 2D or 3D CT (computed tomographic) imaging of live, anesthetized fishes. Our results demonstrate that the lateral line system appears rather unspecialized with well-ossified narrow canals in all species examined. Two LC types (direct and indirect), defined by whether or not the paired anterior swim bladder horns are in direct contact with a medial opening in the supracleithral lateral line canal, are found among species examined. Two variants on a direct LC and four variants of an indirect LC are defined by combinations of soft tissue anatomy (horn length [long/short] and width [wide/narrow], number of swim bladder chambers [one/two], and presence/absence of mucoid connective tissue in the medial opening in the supracleithrum). The combination of features defining each LC variant is predicted to have functional consequences for the bioacoustics of the system. These findings are consistent with the recent discovery that Chaetodon produce sounds during social interactions. The data presented here provide the comparative morphological context for the functional analysis of this novel swim bladder-lateral line connection.  相似文献

For conventional experiments on the orientation behavior of migrant birds in funnels, either hand-raised birds or birds caught during resting periods at stopover sites are generally used. Topographic circumstances at the Alpine pass Col de Bretolet at the Switzerland/France border allow the capture of birds during active migratory flight during the whole night. These birds are in full migratory disposition. We expected them to orient in the seasonally appropriate direction more accurately than birds that had not experienced migration just before the funnel experiment. Experiments with robins, however, revealed a strong influence of the moon on the orientation behavior. The birds did not orient in the seasonally expected migratory direction but showed positive phototaxis, usually toward the lightest part of the funnel in the direction opposite to the moon. When the moon was absent the robins were disoriented. Sunset experiments with robins caught during the night before the experiment revealed a strong phototactic reaction toward the setting sun. As reasons for this poor orientation in the absence of light stimuli, the influence of the topography of the mountainous region and magnetic anomalies can be excluded. It is concluded that freshly caught birds are too stressed when tested immediately after capture or that the migration direction cannot be maintained. Testing of night migrants in complete darkness is also of disadvantage. Received: 23 December 1998 / Received in revised form: 16 July 1999 / Accepted: 30 July 1999  相似文献

Individuals within a species vary in their responses to a wide range of stimuli, partly as a result of differences in their genetic makeup. Relatively little is known about the genetic and neuronal mechanisms contributing to diversity of behavior in natural populations. By studying intraspecies variation in innate avoidance behavior to thermal stimuli in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, we uncovered genetic principles of how different components of a behavioral response can be altered in nature to generate behavioral diversity. Using a thermal pulse assay, we uncovered heritable variation in responses to a transient temperature increase. Quantitative trait locus mapping revealed that separate components of this response were controlled by distinct genomic loci. The loci we identified contributed to variation in components of thermal pulse avoidance behavior in an additive fashion. Our results show that the escape behavior induced by thermal stimuli is composed of simpler behavioral components that are influenced by at least six distinct genetic loci. The loci that decouple components of the escape behavior reveal a genetic system that allows independent modification of behavioral parameters. Our work sets the foundation for future studies of evolution of innate behaviors at the molecular and neuronal level.  相似文献

Sinophysis microcephalus Nie and Wang 1944 is a nonphotosynthetic, tropical, benthic. dinophysoid dinoflagellate. I isolated it from floating detritus on a subtropical mangrove island. Twin Cays. Beleze, Central America, and describe its micromorphology from light and scanning electron micrographs. Cells of S. microcephalus are circular to subcircular and compressed laterally with a cell size of 42-44 μm long and 33–35 μm wide and with a length /width ratio of 1.25–1.28. Areolae are numerous, 368–550 per valve, ranging in size from 0.75 to 2.0 μm. Pores are oblong and deeper at the valve's center and pentagonal-shaped at the plate margin. The well-defined cingulum is narrow and deeply incised with a smooth surface. The epitheca is small, moderately convex, and divided into two large, highly ornate, asymmetrical plate: the left and right epitheca I plates. The left epithecal plate bears two slightly curved, upright anterior projections located dorsally adjacent to the epithecal list, a relatively large opening, and three smaller openings compressed against the sagittal suture. The right plate contains a wide megacytic zone with two parallel ridges, a fairly large oblong opical pore in ventral position adjacent to the cingulum, and eight areolae each with a round, uniform-sized pore opening. There are two long and narrow sulcal lists, gently convex with a smooth edge without structure or ribs. The left sulcal list has an ear-shaped labe, a form of a primitive dinophysoid list. The megacytic zone is smooth and expands unevenly during cell division. The epitheca and sulcus distinguishes S. microcephalus from all examined Dinophysis.  相似文献

Single nanopores attract a great deal of scientific interest as a basis for biosensors and as a system to study the interactions and behavior of molecules in a confined volume. Tuning the geometry and surface chemistry of nanopores helps create devices that control transport of ions and molecules in solution. Here, we present single conically shaped nanopores whose narrow opening of 8 or 12 nm is modified with single-stranded DNA molecules. We find that the DNA occludes the narrow opening of nanopores and that the blockade extent decreases with the ionic strength of the background electrolyte. The results are explained by the ionic strength dependence of the persistence length of DNA. At low KCl concentrations (10 mM) the molecules assume an extended and rigid conformation, thereby blocking the pore lumen and reducing the flow of ionic current to a greater extent than compacted DNA at high salt concentrations. Attaching flexible polymers to the pore walls hence creates a system with tunable opening diameters in order to regulate transport of both neutral and charged species.  相似文献

This study reports on the first experimental research designed specifically for Manta birostris behavior. The authors attempted to learn about the feeding behavior and environmental cues influencing this behavior, as well as general cognitive ability. The preconditioned Manta's ability to identify food, on the basis of a fraction of the ordinary food signal complex, was tested. The opening of cephalic fins was considered a good indicator of feeding motivation level. The study subject animal used its biological clock to predict time and also associated a specific location with food, suggesting an ability to build up a cognitive map of its environment. Both underwater visual stimuli and olfactory stimuli had a very intense effect on food searching behavior over a 30 m distance, in contrast to visual signs from above the water surface. In addition, although an underwater visual signal resulted in a more intense response than from an olfactory signal, the specimen did not discriminate between different objects tested on the basis of visual sensation. It could therefore be suggested that food searching behavior of Mantas are governed by triggering stimuli, including smell or visual recognition, and modulated by the cognitive spatial map stored in their long‐term memory. These findings will hopefully prove useful while devising protecting policies in the natural environment and/or while keeping these animals in captivity. The masking level difference (MLD) is a psychoacoustic phenomenon derived from the subtraction of Sπ No thresholds (signals π radians out of phase and noise in phase at the two ears) from SoNo thresholds (signals and noise in phase at the two ears). The purpose of this study was to determine if the MLD derived from the late components (P1, N1, P2, N2) of the auditory evoked potentials was a physiological correlate of the behavioral MLD. Subjects were 15 young adults with normal hearing. Comparisons were made between behavioral and late potential thresholds to 500 Hz stimuli in So and Sπ conditions in quiet, and to 500 Hz stimuli in SoNo and Sπ No conditiones in narrow band (50 Hz) and wide band (600 Hz) noise. No significant differences were seen for behavioral or late-potential thresholds to So and Sπ conditions. The SπNo threshold was significantly lower than the SoNo threshold, yielding an MLD for both the behavioral and physiological responses. The magnitudes of both the behavioral and late-potential MLD were larger with the narrow band noise than with the wide band noise. Evidence, therefore, is provided that the late-potential MLD reflects similar processes as are responsible for the behavioral MLD.  相似文献

Neural mechanisms are considered of such unconscious psychic phenomena as subliminal perception of semantic stimuli, psychological defence, unaccountable emotions. The results are given of many years studies conducted by means of conditioned, electrophysiological and psychophysiological methods. The possibility is proved of semantic analysis of perception on unconscious level and formation of association with the help of unrealized emotionally significant words. At present it is possible to describe only few neural mechanisms of consciousness and unconsciousness; however, the development of contemporary psychophysiology allows to state that the analysis of this problem from scientific positions is the most correct way to learn the nature of the brain processes which are the basis of these complicated psychic phenomena.  相似文献

Accurate constitutive models are required to gain further insight into the mechanical behavior of cardiovascular tissues. In this study, a structural constitutive framework for cardiovascular tissues is introduced that accounts for the angular distribution of collagen fibers. To demonstrate its capabilities, the model is applied to study the biaxial behavior of the arterial wall and the aortic valve. The pressure-radius relationships of the arterial wall accurately describe experimentally observed sigma-shaped curves. In addition, the nonlinear and anisotropic mechanical properties of the aortic valve can be analyzed with the proposed model. We expect that the current model offers strong possibilities to further investigate the complex mechanical behavior of cardiovascular tissues, including their response to mechanical stimuli.  相似文献

Like protein folding and crystallization, the self-assembly of complexes is a fundamental form of biomolecular organization. While the number of methods for creating synthetic complexes is growing rapidly, most require empirical tuning of assembly conditions and/or produce low yields. We use coarse-grained simulations of the assembly kinetics of complexes to identify generic limitations on yields that arise because of the many simultaneous interactions allowed between the components and intermediates of a complex. Efficient assembly occurs when nucleation is fast and growth pathways are few, i.e. when there is an assembly “funnel”. For typical complexes, an assembly funnel occurs in a narrow window of conditions whose location is highly complex specific. However, by redesigning the components this window can be drastically broadened, so that complexes can form quickly across many conditions. The generality of this approach suggests assembly funnel design as a foundational strategy for robust biomolecular complex synthesis.  相似文献

Three new benthic, photosynthetic dinoflagellate species, Prorocentrum norrisianum, Prorocentrum tropicalis, and Prorocentrum reticulatum, from floating detritus and coral rubble of Central America are described from scanning electron micrographs. Species were identified based on shape, size, surface micromorphology, thecal plate ornamentation, and architecture of the periflagellar area and intercalary band. Cells of P. norrisianum are ovate with a cell size of 20–25 μm long and 13–16 μm wide. The theca is delicate, its surface smooth, pores species specific with 95 to 105 pores per valve. Pores are round with a diameter of about 0.1 μm. The periflagellar area is V-shaped, located on the right valve in a shallow depression. It has no ornamentation. The flagellar and auxiliary pores are unequal in size. The intercalary band is smooth. Prorocentrum tropicalis cells are ovoid, 50–55 μm long and 40–45 μm wide in valve view with maximum width behind the middle region, narrow at the anterior end. The periflagellar area, situated in the right valve, is a V-shaped wide triangle with a deeply indented depression; the left valve exhibits a flat ridge. The periflagellar area is unornamented, and the flagellar and auxiliary pores are unequal in size. The valve surface is rugose with evenly distributed valve poroids. Each poroid appears to have a small dome in the center. The intercalary band is rimlike around the cell margin, granulated, and horizontally striated. Prorocentrum reticulatum cells are oblong in valve view; cells are 55–60 μm long and 40–45 μm wide. Thecal surface is reticulated; it is composed of a labyrinth of ridges with alternating depressions that vary in size and shape. Each depression has a narrow, oblong-kidney-shaped opening about 0.6 μm long. The periflagellar area is a deep, V-shaped triangle. The right valve of P. reticulatum is excavated, and contains a large flagellar pore and a smaller auxiliary pore surrounded by a narrow apical collar. The left valve margin exhibits a curved flat ridge. The intercalary band is smooth.  相似文献

In the search for increasingly accurate protein structures, technological advances are opening up new possibilities. In the last few years the wide accessibility of intense synchrotron sources, the availability of efficient 2D-detectors, and the routine use of cryo-crystallography techniques have yielded a significant number of atomic resolution protein structures. Here we review the most interesting results achieved in this field with a particular emphasis to the biological implications and to the correlation between protein geometry and conformation.  相似文献

IntroductionThe maxillary incisive canal connects the roof of the oral cavity with the floor of nasal cavity and has the incisive and nasal foramina respectively at its two opposite ends. Its close proximity with the anterior incisors affects one’s ability to place immediate implants in ideal position.ObjectiveTo avoid causing complication, variations in their dimensions were studied.ResultsThe mean labiopalatal and mesiodistal measurements of the incisive foramen were 2.80mm and 3.49 mm respectively, while the labiopalatal width of the nasal foramen was 6.06mm. The incisive canal was 16.33mm long and 3.85 mm wide. The anterior maxillary bone has an average thickness of 7.63 mm. The dimensions of the incisive foramen and incisive canal, and anterior maxillary bone thickness demonstrated gender differences with males showing greater values. The anterior maxillary bone thickness was affected by age but this difference was not observed in canal dimensions. The majority of subjects have a funnel shape-like incisive canal with the broader opening located at its superior. They seem to have a longer slanted-curve canal with one channel at its middle portion and a narrower incisive foramen opening than those reported elsewhere.ConclusionsThis study found that gender is an important factor that affected the characteristics of the IC and the amount of bone anterior to it. Male generally had bigger IC and thicker anterior bone. In addition, the anterior maxillary bone thickness was affected by aging, where it becomes thinner with increased age even though the subjects were fully dentate.  相似文献
