Within the breeding population of a deciduous woodland, male Wrens averaged slightly larger than females in wing length, foot length, head plus bill length and body mass. First-year and older birds were similar for three of these morphometric variables, but the first-year group were shorter-winged than the older birds (by 3%). Despite this, wing length still proved to be a useful discriminator of sex when the data were pooled for all ages (74% of males exceeding the maximum female value of 49.8 mm). A discriminant function utilizing wing length and head plus bill length correctly sexed 96% of individuals in the sample from which it was derived (n = 49 males, 36 females). This function was converted into a predictive equation for the probability of an unknown case being male, and a plot of wing length against head plus bill length along with probability contours which enabled the sexing of unknown cases without the need for calculations. Measurements of the morphological variables investigated were found to be highly repeatable for a single worker, with the exception of body mass which differed substantially between the sexes but which was only moderately repeatable. The methods provided should prove valuable for sexing British mainland Troglodytes troglodytes indigenus, and probably also Western European T. t. troglodytes, but should not be applied to the larger, offshore island races.  相似文献

Some 5700 Ruffs were ringed in the southern Kenyan rift valley during 1967–79, mainly at Lakes Nakuru and Magadi. These have produced 15 recoveries outside East Africa, 14 in Siberia between 73° and 154°E and one in India. Adult males returned to Kenya mainly during August, and females during late August and early September. Females greatly outnumbered males at all times. Most wintering males departed late in March and early in April, but females not until about a month later. First-year birds appeared from the end of August, but remained in low numbers until late October or November. Most departed during April and May, but a few females oversummered. First-year birds typically accounted for about 25% of the wintering Nakuru females, but about 50% of those at Magadi. At both sites they accounted for a higher proportion of male birds than females. Most of the birds at Nakuru throughout late August to May appeared to be local winterers, and many individuals remained in the area for many months each year. Retrapping indicated that approximately 60% of each season's birds returned the following season. Adult males and most adult females commenced pre-winter wing moult before arrival, but completed most of it in Kenya. Males moulted 3–4 weeks ahead of females, and most had finished before December. Females typically finished during December and early January. Most second year birds timed their pre-winter moult similarly to older adults. Suspension was recorded in over 15% of all moulting birds examined. Adult pre-summer moult involved most or all of the tertials, some or all of the tail feathers, most of the inner wing coverts and the body and head plumage. It occurred mainly during January to March (males) or February to April (females), although tertial renewal commonly began a month earlier. Males showed no sign in Kenya of the supplementary prenuptial moult. First-year birds moulted from juvenile into first winter body plumage during late September to November. They underwent a pre-summer moult similar in extent and timing to that of adults, and again about a month earlier in males than females. Spring feathers acquired were often as brightly coloured as those of adults. About 15% of first-year birds renewed their outer 2–4 pairs of large primaries during January to April. Adult and first-year birds fattened before spring departure, commonly reaching weights 30–60% above winter mean. Weights of adult males peaked early in April, those of adult females early in May, and those of first-winter females later in May. Weights were relatively high also during August and September. This was due to the arrival of wintering birds carrying ‘spare’ reserves, and also apparently to the presence of a late moulting fattening passage contingent. The wing length of newly moulted adults was about 3 mm longer than that of newly arrived first-year birds, but there was no evidence of an increase in the wing kngth of adults with successive moults. Adult wing length decreased by 4–5 mm between the completion of one moult and the middle stages of the next. The migrations and annual timetable of Kenyan wintering Ruffs are discussed, and their moult strategy is compared with that of other Holarctic waders.  相似文献

Four different age classes of the southern African Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus are recognized and their plumages described: juvenile (3–24 months old), immature (24–45 months), subadult (45–60 months) and adult (60+ months). There was no significant difference in size between adult male and female birds. Adults were larger than juvenile birds in bill width, beard length, wingspan and mass, and had a higher aspect ratio and wing loading, while juvenile birds were larger than adults in the length of their outer rectrices, tail area, wing breadth and wing area. These features are considered to be adaptive to young birds inexperienced in flying. Immature and subadult birds were intermediate in size between juveniles and adults. Bearded Vultures differ from other large raptors in two sets of physical characteristics, (a) those adapted to cold, mountainous habitat, e.g. feathered head and face, unusually long wings, a high aspect ratio and a particularly long tail, and (b) those adapted to their diet of mainly bones, e.g. wide gape, beard and relatively long talons for carrying food.  相似文献

Capsule A combination of several biometric measures enables the reliable sexing of the European Bee-eater Merops apiaster, a species with subtle sex differences in plumage and morphometry.

Aims To explore variation in biometrics and their suitability to discriminate sex in adult European Bee-eaters Merops apiaster.

Methods We sampled populations of a long-distance migratory species with low sexual size dimorphism, the European Bee-eater Merops apiaster, from colonies in western Iberia (Portugal) and Central Europe (Germany) to investigate body size variation and derive population-specific and general sex discriminant functions.

Results Overall, male Bee-eaters were larger than females while Bee-eaters from Germany and Portugal did not differ in size, except for primary length and tail length. The best single measurement to discriminate sex was wing length for Portuguese birds and tail tip length for German birds, as in the combined dataset. Multivariate discriminant functions of head-bill, wing and tail tip lengths provided the highest discriminant accuracy, discriminating sex for 91% of the birds from Portugal, 96% from Germany and 94% when using the combined dataset. Nonetheless, the discriminant accuracy remained high in the functions using only two variables for Portugal (head-bill and tail tip 91%, head-bill and wing 88%, wing and tail tip 88%), Germany (head-bill and tail tip 95%, wing and tail tip 97%) and in the combined dataset (head-bill and tail tip 92%, wing and tail tip 93%).

Conclusions Population specific discriminant functions allow sexing of European Bee-eaters by morphometry with high degree of accuracy at least for Iberia and Central European populations. Such discriminant functions can be used to assign the sex of adult Bee-eaters reliably and swiftly while the bird is still in the hand, highlighting the potential of these functions for rapidly sexing species with low degrees of sexual size and plumage dimorphism.  相似文献

Age-related differences in foraging efficiency and behaviour were investigated in a population of colour-ringed Silvereyes Zosterops lateralis . First-year birds were less efficient foragers than older birds with second-year birds being intermediate. First- and second-year birds had lower success rates than older birds overall, and for most capture techniques and substrates. First-year birds never attempted breeding while about half of the second-year birds and all of the older birds did. Both learning and selection effects may have been involved in causing the age-related differences in foraging behaviour. Foraging skills appear to improve during the first 2 years of life and selection could remove the least efficient foragers from the population in winter when food is short. That second-year birds, some of which had already attempted breeding, were not significantly more efficient foragers than first-year birds suggests that reproduction is not delayed until adult levels of foraging efficiency have been attained.  相似文献

Analysis of the biometric parameters of dunlins is based on data of 496 adult birds and 214 birds in their second year of life captured during the spring migration in the years 2002–2014 in the floodplain of the Pripyat River in southern Belarus. The average size of the dunlins caught in this area shows that the majority of birds correspond to the parameters of the nominate subspecies (C. a. alpina). We have not found any statistically significant differences between the age groups in all morphometric parameters except for the length of the wing, which in the birds in their second year of life is slightly smaller than in adults. Both the adult dunlins and the yearlings have two peaks in the distribution of biometric parameters, such as the bill length to the nostril, the bill length to the feathering, the total length of the head with the bill, and the length of the wing, which is associated with differences in the size of males and females. We have noted an increase in the average bill length to the nostril, bill to feathering length, and the total length of the head with the bill, as well as the wing length in the adult birds captured during the spring migration. These values are especially significant in the last five days of May. The body mass index of the dunlins passing through the floodplain of the Pripyat River increases intensively during the migration, which can partly be attributed to the later migration of large birds (females). However, the main reason for the increase in the body mass index is that the birds migrating later in spring have higher energy reserves compared with the earlier migrants. At the end of the migration period, in the floodplain of the Pripyat River, the body mass indices of dunlins are very high. This suggests that birds leaving the stopover site in southern Belarus in early June have sufficient energy resources to reach the nesting places in one nonstop flight.  相似文献

The Sanderling in southern Africa is restricted to coastal habitats. The population during the austral summer was estimated to be 78000. Highest densities occurred along the west coast where the Benguela Up-welling System gives rise to enriched inter-tidal invertebrate communities, partly through the stranding of large kelps. Immigration from the breeding areas took place during September and November. Numbers were highest during mid summer and emigration took place in April. The summer population at Lange-baan Lagoon was biased towards males (72%). The percentage of first-year birds in the summer population fluctuated on a three-year cycle, coinciding with the lemming cycle in the Taimyr Peninsula in Siberia. It is suggested that the cyclic fluctuation is caused by Arctic Foxes, and perhaps other predators, feeding on lemmings in years of lemming abundance but subsisting on the eggs and chicks of birds when lemmings are scarce. First-year birds are similar in size (similar bill lengths) to older birds, but are lighter in mass during the summer. First-year birds do not accumulate the large fat reserves which older birds deposit between March and early May for northward migration. However, not all first-year birds remain in southern Africa. Trie 13000 km northward migration is completed within seven weeks and probably involves three long flights and two periods of replenishing fat reserves. Birds cross the Sahara to the Mediterranean, and also pass through the Caspian Sea to Siberia or through the North Sea coasts to either Siberia or Greenland. Return routes also involve the North, Caspian and Black Seas but there is little information about routes through Africa.  相似文献

The blackcap Sylvia atricapilla shows a complex migratory pattern and is a suitable species for the studies of morphological migratory syndrome, including adaptations of wing shape to different migratory performance. Obligate migrants of this species that breed in northern, central, and Eastern Europe differ by migration distance and some cover shorter distance to the wintering grounds in the southern part of Europe/North Africa or the British Isles, although others migrate to sub-Saharan Africa. Based on ˃40 years of ringing data on blackcaps captured during autumn migration in the Southern Baltic region, we studied age- and sex-related correlations in wing pointedness and wing length of obligate blackcap migrants to understand the differences in migratory behavior of this species. Even though the recoveries of blackcaps were scarce, we reported some evidence that individuals which differ in migration distance differed also in wing length. We found that wing pointedness significantly increased with an increasing wing length of migrating birds, and adults had longer and more pointed wings than juvenile birds. This indicates stronger antipredator adaptation in juvenile blackcaps than selection on flight efficiency, which is particularly important during migration. Moreover, we documented more pronounced differences in wing length between adult and juvenile males and females. Such differences in wing length may enhance a faster speed of adult male blackcaps along the spring migration route and may be adaptive when taking into account climatic effects, which favor earlier arrival from migration to the breeding grounds.  相似文献

Extreme climatic disturbances provide excellent opportunities to study natural selection in wild populations because they may cause measurable directional shifts in character traits. Insectivorous cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) in the northern Great Plains must often endure periods of cold weather in late spring that reduce food availability, and if cold spells last four or more days, mortality due to starvation may result. We analyzed morphological shifts associated with viability selection, and how patterns of bilateral symmetry were affected by survival selection, during a four-day period of cold weather in 1992 and a six-day period in 1996 in southwestern Nebraska. Birds that died during the cold were compared to those still alive when the severe weather ended. The event in 1992 killed relatively few birds, but the cold spell in 1996 killed thousands of cliff swallows and reduced their population by about 53%. Climatological records suggest that mortality events comparable to that of 1996 have occurred in only one other year since 1875. Larger birds were favored in the 1996 event. Selection was more intense in 1996 than in 1992 because of more stressful conditions in 1996. Directional selection gradient analysis showed that measures of skeletal body size (tarsus length, culmen width and length) and wing length were targets of selection in 1996. Survivors had lower wing and outer tail asymmetry, and wing and tail asymmetry were targets of selection in both events. Mortality patterns did not differ by sex, but older birds suffered heavier mortality; morphological traits generally did not vary with age. Nonsurvivors were not in poorer apparent condition prior to the weather event than survivors, suggesting that selection acted directly on morphology independent of condition. Selection on body size in cliff swallows was more intense than in studies of body size evolution in other bird species. Larger swallows were probably favored in cold weather due to the thermal advantages of large size and the ability to store more fat. Swallows with low asymmetry were favored probably because low asymmetry in wing and tail made foraging more efficient and less costly, conferring survival advantages during cold weather. This population of cliff swallows may have undergone relatively recent body size evolution.  相似文献

1. This article reports the responses of wild, adult jacamars to butterflies with distinct coloration types in central Brazil. Fully aposematic species, i.e. those exhibiting bright and/or contrasting colours on both wing surfaces (= A/A), were predominantly sight‐rejected by birds and, with one exception, the few butterflies attacked and captured were taste‐rejected afterwards. 2. Aposematic and cryptic butterflies, i.e. those exhibiting bright and/or contrasting colours on the upper and cryptic colours on the underwings (= A/C) were sight‐rejected while flying, when they show their conspicuous colours to predators. This suggests that birds associate butterfly colours with their difficulty of capture, as in the case of Morpho and several Coliadinae species. These butterflies, however, were heavily attacked at rest, when they are cryptic. 3, Fully cryptic butterflies, i.e. those exhibiting cryptic colours on both wing surfaces (= C/C) did not elicit sight rejections by birds. Comparisons involving the number of attacks and the capture success of flying and resting individuals showed no significant differences in species more frequently observed like some cracker butterflies (Hamadryas feronia and H. februa) and Taygetis laches. Compared with the A/C Coliadinae, these butterflies showed a lesser, although not significantly different, ability to escape while flying, but a greater and significantly different ability to escape while at rest. 4, A hunting tactic of jacamars, which consists of following flying A/C and C/C butterflies on sight, and waiting until they perch to locate and attack them, is described for the first time.  相似文献

Recent studies indicated that body size of various animals, including birds, changed during the twentieth century, and these changes were attributed to changes in food availability and climate. We used museum skins of goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) collected between 1854 and 1941 and between 1979 and 1998 in order to check whether body size of this species in Denmark changed during the study period. We compared three body measurements (wing, beak and tarsus length) and the first principal component (PC1) derived from these measurements of four groups of goshawks (adult and immature, females and males). We found that the wing length of goshawks collected after 1979 was significantly smaller in comparison with those collected before this year, and females were more affected than males. Immature birds (but not adults) collected after 1979 had significantly shorter beaks than those from the early period. Immature females collected after 1979 had shorter tarsi than those collected in the early period. There was a significant decrease in body size (as represented by PC1) from the early to late period, which was more pronounced among females and immature birds. In conclusion, body size of goshawks in Denmark decreased during the twentieth century.  相似文献

Measurements of five morphological components (mass, skull length, culmen, flattened wing and tarsus) and blood samples were taken from 154 fledged wild Lesser Flamingos Phoenicopterus minor captured during 2001 and 2002 at Lake Bogoria, Kenya (0°11'–20'N, 036°06'E). The sample included adults (>3 years old), immature birds (2–3 years old) and first-year juvenile birds of both sexes. The sex of each bird was determined by PCR amplification of the CHD-Z and CHD-W genes, using DNA extracted from blood samples. Within each gender, there were significant differences in mass and tarsus length amongst the three age groups, indicating that the skeletal size and mass of Lesser Flamingos continue to increase between fledging and attainment of adult plumage at three to four years of age. The different morphological components increased in size at different rates, although the same components appeared to increase at similar rates in both males and females. Skull and culmen lengths had reached adult size in juvenile birds, while juvenile wing length, tarsus length and mass were approximately 95%, 85% and 75% of adult size, respectively. The adaptive significance of these findings is discussed.  相似文献

Summary

Time to pupation, percent survival to pupation, and percent adult emergence of Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann decreased at higher larval rearing temperature. Mosquitoes reared at 30°C experienced higher mortality during the pupal stage than did mosquitoes reared at 22°C. Analysis of variance revealed that wing length and costal wing spot patterns of adult female A. albimanus were affected by larval rearing temperature. Female A. albimanus reared at 22°C had longer wings, and larger basal pale + prehumeral pale, prehumeral dark, and humeral pale costal wing spots than did female siblings reared at 30°C. Female A. albimanus reared at 30°C had larger subcostal pale spots than did female siblings reared at 22°C. Analyses of 2x2 contingency tables indicated that sex ratio was independent of larval rearing temperature, whereas survival to the adult stage and coalescence of wing spots were not independent of rearing temperature. The need to examine stability of morphological characters under differing environmental conditions is discussed.  相似文献

Linear densities of Steppe Buzzards, Buteo buteo, were studied along roads at the southernmost edge of the nonbreeding range in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. Adults arrived before first-year birds; peak populations of the former occurred from December to February, and of the latter from January onwards. Except during periods with rapidly changing numbers during arrival and departure, the proportion of first-year birds in three different areas was negatively related to the density of adults. This may be the result of competitive exclusion by adults, or of age-related differences in habitat preference. Adults dominated first-year birds at hunting perches. First-year birds were most frequently found in more closed habitat, where they attempted to kleptoparasitize adults in 18% of all observed instances of prey mantling.  相似文献

Molt strategies have received relatively little attention in current ornithology, and knowledge concerning the evolution, variability and extent of molt is sparse in many bird species. This is especially true for East Asian Locustella species where assumptions on molt patterns are based on incomplete information. We provide evidence indicating a complex postbreeding molt strategy and variable molt extent among the Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler Locustella certhiola, based on data from six ringing sites situated along its flyway from the breeding grounds to the wintering areas. Detailed study revealed for the first time that in most individuals wing feather molt proceeds from the center both toward the body and the wing‐tip, a molt pattern known as divergent molt (which is rare among Palearctic passerines). In the Russian Far East, where both breeding birds and passage migrants occur, a third of the adult birds were molting in late summer. In Central Siberia, at the northwestern limit of its distribution, adult individuals commenced their primary molt partly divergently and partly with unknown sequence. During migration in Mongolia, only descendantly (i.e., from the body toward the wing‐tip) molting birds were observed, while further south in Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand the proportion of potential eccentric and divergent feather renewal was not identifiable since the renewed feathers were already fully grown as expected. We found an increase in the mean number of molted primaries during the progress of the autumn migration. Moderate body mass levels and low‐fat and muscle scores were observed in molting adult birds, without any remarkable increase in the later season. According to optimality models, we suggest that an extremely short season of high food abundance in tall grass habitats and a largely overland route allow autumn migration with low fuel loads combined with molt migration in at least a part of the population. This study highlights the importance of further studying molt strategy as well as stopover behavior decisions and the trade‐offs among migratory birds that are now facing a panoply of anthropogenic threats along their flyways.  相似文献

Gonad development, moult and seasonal changes in body weight and composition in the Tawny owl Strix aluco were studied by examining the carcasses of 369 owls (mostly road casualties) supplemented by 112 weights of live birds. In breeding females laying was preceded by the accumulation of fat and to a lesser extent protein which meant that they weighed more at this time (February/March) than at any other. Females declined in weight after laying but were still heavy during incubation. In contrast, males and non-breeding females did not increase in weight before the start of the breeding season. Juveniles reached or even exceeded adult weight well before independence due to the deposition of fat. Even after the exclusion of diseased or contaminated individuals, 9·4% of the birds examined were identified as starving; most of these were in the autumn and were probably newly-independent young wandering in search of territories. In both sexes gonad maturation was of brief duration coinciding with the period (mid-March to mid-April) in which eggs are normally laid. Ovarian growth was biphasic. In the three months prior to the breeding season ovarian condition in different birds was positively correlated with body weight and it appeared that the largest ovarian follicles of females in poor condition failed to attain the size from which rapid growth to final ovulation occurs. in males testis size in the breeding season was correlated with pectoral muscle weight (an index to protein condition) but not body weight. The majority of adults commenced wing moult in June. The average duration of primary moult was estimated to be 77 days. Healthy birds replaced the primaries of both wings at the same rate but most diseased birds moulted asymmetrically and/or out of season. First-year birds renewed their body feathers between September and November. In the Tawny owl territory establishment, breeding and moult are temporally separated.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (minor deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry) is manifested by individuals less able to buffer environmental stress during development. I utilized a system of two naturally-occurring parasites ofDrosophila nigrospiracula to test whether parasitic infection during host development yields elevated degrees of fluctuating asymmetry in two morphological traits of males. This hypothesis has important implications for sexual selection, as it may explain why asymmetric males are often found to be sexually disadvantaged. In my system, nematodes infect larvae and therefore are more likely to disrupt development than mites which only parasitize adult flies. As predicted, nematode-infected maleD. nigrospiracula had a higher degree of bristle asymmetry than did mite-infested and control (carrying neither parasite) males. There was also a significant relation between nematode number and degree of asymmetry. There was a significant negative relation between nematode load and size of adult males, implicating a causal link between nutritional stress during host development and fluctuating asymmetry. Patterns of wing length asymmetry were inconsistent with those of bristle asymmetry. Nematode-infected males did not differ in wing length asymmetry relative to mite-infested and control males, nor was there a significant relation between nematode number and wing asymmetry. This inconsistency in expression of asymmetry may reflect different intensities of selection operating on each morphological trait.  相似文献

In many taxa, environmental changes that alter resource availability and energetics, such as climate change and land use change, are associated with changes in body size. We use wing length as a proxy for overall structural body size to examine a paradoxical trend of declining wing length within a Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella population sampled over 21 years, in which it has been previously shown that longer wings are associated with higher survival rates. Higher temperatures during the previous winter (prior to the moult determining current wing length) explained 23% of wing length decrease within our population, but changes may also be correlated with non‐climatic environmental variation such as changes in farming mechanisms linked to food availability. We found no evidence for within‐individual wing length shrinkage with age, but our data suggested a progressive decline in the sizes of immature birds recruiting to the population. This trend was weaker, although not significantly so, among adults, suggesting that the decline in the sizes of recruits was offset by higher subsequent survival of larger birds post‐recruitment. These data suggest that ecological processes can contribute more than selection to observed phenotypic trends and highlight the importance of long‐term studies for providing longitudinal insights into population processes.  相似文献

Abstract: Murres (thick-billed [Uria lomvia] and common [U. aalge]) are legally hunted along the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Razorbills (Alca torda) are also incidentally taken. Only irregular estimates of the total murre harvest are available, so a tool to derive estimates of age- and species-specific harvest is required to effectively monitor the hunt and manage a sustainable harvest. We collected 293 murre and razorbill wings from hunters between 1999–2004, with the goal of identifying wing characteristics that could be used to discriminate age and species. We found that murres and razorbills could be reliably aged (first-yr vs. older) on the basis of molt limits of greater wing coverts. Using a discriminant function (DF) incorporating length of the first primary and second secondary feather, we classified 95–96% of common murres and 99–100% of thick-billed murres correctly to species. First-year thick-billed and common murres also differed in number of pale secondary coverts (median = 12 and 3, respectively), providing another species-specific trait. We developed a key to age and assign species based on these results. We assessed applicability and accuracy of the wing-key with novice observers, who differentiated between murre and razorbill wings using feather-pattern coloration with high accuracy (95 ± 9%) and were able to differentiate between the 2 murres species using 3 techniques: visual assessment of wing shape (83 ± 14% accuracy), the DF (94 ± 6%), and number of worn secondary coverts for first-year birds only (83 ± 5%). Experience increased success rates of aging and species classification using wing shape and number of worn secondary coverts but not using the DF. Despite differences in measurement accuracy and repeatability among observers, the DF proved to be robust. I studied the life cycle of a botfly (Diptera: Muscidae: Philornis carinatus) and examined the effects of botfly ectoparasitism on nestling house wrens (Passeriformes: Troglodytidae: Troglodytes aedon) during three years in Costa Rica. At three study sites, I found that nestlings were relatively unaffected by botflies, in contrast to all other studies of birds infected with philornid botflies. At Monteverde, the main study site, infected chicks grew slightly slower and had slightly shorter tarsi and wing chords than uninfected chicks, but both groups fledged at similar weights. Since weight at fledging is the only growth character associated with post-fledging survivorship, botfly infections likely cost wrens little in terms of fitness. At all sites, fledging success did not differ between infected and uninfected nests. Botfly infections were more prevalent at two lower elevation sites than at the high elevation Monteverde side. Infection prevalence increased during the nesting season at all study sites, which suggests a botfly life cycle in which adult population levels increase during the wren breeding season and then decline during a dormant period when wrens are not nesting. Finally, botflies may attack chicks throughout the period before fledging, but there is no indication they locate nests before hatching. In sum, botfly parasitism on wrens appears to be benign, perhaps because the study sites are at the edge of the botfly's range or because wrens are not a preferred host.  相似文献
