Rice fields, the most widespread cropland in Japan, provide important habitat for birds, but few studies have examined bird communities that are influenced by agriculture in rice fields. I studied the seasonal pattern of bird abundance and their habitat preferences in terms of agricultural habitats in the rice fields of the central Kanto Plain, central Japan. In total, 19 waterbird species and 31 landbird species were recorded over the study year. Waterbird occurrence was largely restricted to the cultivation season (i.e. the flooded season, May–August), with maximum abundance in August. Rice fields dried up during winter and supported few waterbirds except for irregular occurrences of little egrets (Egretta garzetta) and common snipes (Gallinago gallinago), which selectively used ditches with shallow water. Landbird abundance increased after the start of cultivation (May) to August, but more birds were attracted to the rice fields in midwinter (around January). For both waterbirds and landbirds, most species preferred levees and fallow grass fields, but avoided fields with rice vegetation. Unplowed fields after harvest were preferred by several species including skylarks (Alauda arvensis), while plowed fields were less attractive to most species. These results suggest the need for advanced agricultural practices to include improvement in habitat quality for birds.  相似文献

We compared the habitat preferences of the alien raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides (Gray, 1834) and the native badger Meles meles (Linnaeus, 1758) in two areas (Ruissalo and Tuulos) in southern Finland by radio-tracking the animals during summer from 2005 to 2008. We assumed that the habitat preferences of these two medium-sized carnivores differ to some extent (ie they are able to share the resources), because they have been sympatric for more than 50 years in southern Finland and populations of both species have increased during that period. The results indicated that the habitat preferences of these species are indeed different: raccoon dogs favoured meadows, gardens and open woodlands with tall and abundant undergrowth, whereas badgers favoured both pine forests and deciduous and mixed forests with thick canopy but sparse undergrowth. However, fields were favoured by both species in one study area (Tuulos). The results show that although both species are flexible in their habitat use and share some habitat preferences, the most favoured habitats differ between the species.  相似文献

We studied habitat preferences and intra and interspecific density-dependent effects on habitat selection by Akodon azarae and Calomys laucha between maize fields and their adjacent borders, during different developmental stages of the crop. Akodon azarae detected quantitative differences between habitats, using preferentially borders throughout the year, while C. laucha perceived borders and cropfields as quantitatively similar during spring and summer and it detected borders as quantitatively better at the high density period (autumn and winter). These results support the prediction of differential habitat preferences as a model of community organisation at the low density period, while they are consistent with shared habitat preferences during autumn and winter when both species apparently coexist in the better habitat (border). Akodon azarae showed intraspecific density-dependent habitat selection throughout the year, except in spring, while habitat selection by C. laucha was density-dependent in spring, autumn and winter. The effect of interspecific density on habitat selection was detected in both habitats and changed seasonally. The effect of A. azarae over C. laucha by resources exploitation was detected in borders, while competitive effects of C. laucha over A. azarae was observed within cropfields. Both species were more affected by exploitation competition than interference, which was more common in borders than in maize fields. We conclude that seasonally have a profound effect in habitat selection of these species because it changes the intensity of intra and interspecific competition and affects different habitat preferences and basic suitability of habitats. We investigated the effects of agriculture and the availability of edge habitat on populations of Helmeted Guineafowl Numida meleagris and associated avian diversity and species composition in woodland and grassland biomes in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa. Study sites within woodland biome had greater species diversity than those in grassland, whereas adjacent, high-quality, protected habitat in grassland sites, enhanced diversity within this biome. Both guineafowl populations and overall avian diversity declined with increasingly intensive agriculture and disappearance of edge habitat and associated, optimally fragmented habitat mosaic. Furthermore, traditional agriculture in the form of contouring in a pesticide-free environment, resulted in extensive edge habitat that appeared to provide additional food and cover for birds. This, in turn, caused an increase in overall bird diversity, and in guineafowl populations in particular. The widespread decline in Helmeted Guineafowl populations in the Midlands that started in the 1980s, and possibly the decline in species associated with this variegated landscape, was therefore caused by the loss of the habitat mosaic to intensive, modern, monoculture, crop agriculture. Maintaining species diversity and healthy guineafowl populations within these habitats requires the persistence or re-creation of a habitat mosaic and the resulting edge habitat on a landscape scale.  相似文献

The habitat selection and the factors influencing the distribution of the House Sparrow Passer domesticus in the municipality of Valencia (76 km2) were studied during the winter and breeding season. House Sparrows positively selected urban parks and gardens, patches of derelict land and horticultural fields; they avoided the built-up habitat and the orange groves. In the urban landscape, the abundance of sparrows peaked in areas providing intermediate cover of the built-up habitat; it was positively driven by the amount of park land per unit area, and negatively by the size of urban parks. Our results suggest that the conservation and habitat enhancement of even the smallest parks and gardens are likely key factors in addressing the decline of the House Sparrow in many cities.  相似文献

This study assessed the possibility of predicting the distribution of potential winter habitats for fisherMartes pennanti Erxleben, 1777 in central interior British Columbia (BC) with the BC Vegetation Resources Inventory (VRI) dataset used to produce forestry maps. I predicted that fisher winter habitat would correspond to coniferous or coniferous-deciduous stands with the following characteristics: (1) absence of disturbance, (2) >- 80 years old, (3) mature and old forest structural stages, (4) ≥ 20 m2·ha-1 basal area in mature trees, (5) ≥ 30% canopy closure, (6) shrub cover ≥ 20%, and (7) diameter at breast height ≥ 27.5 cm. I allocated weight values to these criteria to classify map polygons into excellent-, high-, medium-, and low- quality habitats, and produce predictive maps of winter habitat use by fishers. I tested predictive maps in the field by snow-tracking along 27 transects (44.2 km) in winter 2003–2004, and 16 transects (31.4 km) in winter 2004–2005. A total of 89 tracks were recorded during both years. The proportion of fisher tracks within each polygon type was significantly different from random (p < 0.001). The majority of tracks (> 83%) were in structurally complex coniferous stands. This study showed that it is possible to predict the distribution of potential winter habitats for fisher in central interior British Columbia using simple habitat criteria and the VRI dataset. This study’s query may be used in other regions with similar vegetation composition to identify forests be inhabited by fishers in winter, and develop effective conservation programs in managed landscapes.  相似文献

Abstract The absence of small birds from many suburban areas may be due to adverse garden characteristics, interspecific aggression or human behaviour such as supplementary food provisioning that encourages predators. We investigated the relationship between these factors and the presence of seven small bird species in Sydney through a community‐based survey. The survey was conducted by participants over a 7‐day period between 7 am and 10 am in November and early December 2000. Three dominant species, the noisy miner (Manorina melanocephala), pied currawong (Strepera graculina) and common myna (Acridotheres tristis) were each present in over 59% of gardens. Each small bird species was present in less than 40% of gardens. All small birds were negatively associated with noisy miners, but only the silvereye (Zosterops lateralis) was negatively associated with pied currawongs. None of the species of small birds was negatively associated with common mynas. Four species of small birds were associated with at least one habitat variable, notably the proportion of native vegetation. Although more birds were recorded in gardens in which meat was provided, there were significantly fewer small birds in these gardens. There were also more birds recorded in gardens where seed was provided, with red‐browed finches (Neochmia temporalis) positively associated with seed provisioning in most regions of Sydney. The presence of dogs and cats was not related to the total abundance of birds overall or small birds in gardens. While garden characteristics may influence the presence of small birds to some degree, the presence of noisy miners, a species that are thought to aggressively exclude other species from their territories, is likely to be an important influence on these species in suburban areas. Furthermore, supplementary feeding by people is likely to negatively influence some small birds. The presence of carnivorous pets does not seem to influence the presence of small birds at the scale of the individual garden.  相似文献

The habitat preferences of two closely related millipede species, Centrobolus richardii and C. fulgidus, were investigated on three different seral stages of a coastal dune forest successional sere north of Richards Bay, South Africa. Fixed‐width transects were used to survey millipedes in three habitats of different ages. Habitat preference occurred on both inter‐ and intra‐site levels and was influenced by season. A habitat shift was recorded for C. richardii, while C. fulgidus was dormant during the winter months, reflecting two different strategies used by these closely related species to meet their resource requirements. Successional changes previously reported are masked by these differential responses.  相似文献

Brown trout Salmo trutta redds in the Credit River, Ontario, were enumerated and assessed for physical, location and cover feature characteristics during the 2002 spawning season. Hydraulic habitats were classified on the basis of channel morphology and availability recorded. Combined use and availability data were used to assess habitat selection preferences and test for significant differences. Significant preferences for upstream pool and riffle habitat were found, but all available habitat types were used to some degree. Non‐preferred habitat redds were significantly larger than those located in preferred habitats and more likely to be found in association with woody debris cover. Larger redds were interpreted as indicative of larger fish. The use of non‐preferred downstream habitats by larger fish was further interpreted in the context of overwinter habitat requirements to reflect possible trade‐offs between reproductive and adult over‐winter survival requirements resulting in the selection of habitat for multiple life‐history functions. Results suggest that redd density alone should not be used to infer critical autumn habitat requirements for brown trout.  相似文献

During the winter seasons of 2000/2001 and 2003/2004, 27 territorial fieldfares Turdus pilaris were observed in two study areas in southern Poland. Of these, 22 were in gardens or orchards with apple trees. Only 0.5% of all fieldfares noted during field surveys were territorial, and only 1.7% of the checked gardens and orchards were inhabited by that species. Fieldfares defended fruit against several species, including conspecifics. The probability of the presence of territorial fieldfares within a habitat patch was higher in patches with a higher density of apples, but was not related to the size or degree of isolation of the patch. The duration of holding territory was positively correlated with apple density and negatively correlated with the presence of intruders (mainly flocks of non-territorial fieldfares). The results suggest that food density and the presence of intruders are key factors affecting the presence of territorial thrushes during winter.  相似文献

To understand habitat preferences, seasonal abundance and diets of rodents in wet and dry season surveys were conducted in Alage, Southern Ethiopia. Sherman and snap traps were used to capture rodents from the four habitats: bushland, Acacia woodland, maize and wheat farmlands. A total of 3312 trap nights, from the four trapping habitats, yielded 776 individuals that represented 11 species of rodents. The distribution of rodents varied between habitats and seasons. Wet season rodent abundance was 52.3% while in the dry season it was 47.7%. Seasonal differences in species abundance were insignificant. Bushland habitat had high wet and dry season abundances with 137 and 211 individuals, respectively. Abundance was low in maize farm (57 individuals) in the wet season and wheat farm (10 individuals) in the dry season. Stomach content composition analysis of snap‐trapped rodents from different habitats showed differences between species and across seasons. Six rodent species were recorded as pests on the farmlands in this study area. In conclusion, variation in habitat preferences and diet of rodents in different habitats and across seasons might be due to the role of ground cover and food sources.  相似文献

Helmeted Guineafowl, Numida meleagris, populations have declined significantly within the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal since the early 1980s. Because guineafowl have been observed feeding on harvested soybean lands and because raw soybeans are known to contain anti-nutritional factors, research into the digestibility of raw soybeans was conducted to investigate possible localized factors in suppressing populations of these birds. A digestibility study was carried out on the apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and the amino acids of both raw and processed soybeans, as well as a number of other feed ingredients, using Helmeted Guineafowl and adult roosters, Gallus gallus, as a control. The results of the energy balance studies were similar for both the guineafowl and the roosters. Soybean, both raw and processed, was found to be comparable with the other feed ingredients in terms of the digestibility of gross energy, but the amino acid digestibility of raw soybeans was considerably lower than that of processed soybean oilcake meal. The availability of raw soybean may thus only be contributing to localized dietary constraints within guineafowl populations.  相似文献

Spatial distributions of coral reef fish species are potentially determined by habitat preferences and behavioural interactions. However, the relative importance of these factors and whether or not behavioural interactions reinforce or disrupt habitat associations are poorly understood. This paper explores the degree to which habitat and social preferences explain the association that three common coral reef cardinalfish species (Zoramia leptacanthus, Archamia zosterophora and Cheilodipterus quinquelineatus; family Apogonidae) have with coral substrata at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. At diurnal resting sites, species were strongly associated with branching corals, with 80–90% of each species inhabiting one branching coral species, Porites cylindrica. Species were also highly gregarious, forming large con-specific and hetero-specific aggregations in coral heads, potentially reinforcing habitat associations. Three-way choice experiments were conducted to test fishes habitat preferences for living coral over dead substrata, for particular coral species, and the influence of gregarious behaviour on these habitat choices. The strength of habitat preferences differed among species, with Z. leptacanthus preferring live coral and P. cylindrica, A. zosterophora preferring P. cylindrica, whether live or dead and C. quinquelineatus exhibiting no preferences. All species were attracted to conspecifics, and for C. quinquelineatus and A. zosterophora, conspecific attraction resulted in stronger preferences for live corals. Gregarious behaviour also increased C. quinquelineatus associations with P. cylindrica. The relative strength of social attraction versus habitat preferences was investigated by comparing fish habitat preferences in the presence and/or absence of conspecifics. The presence of conspecifics on non-preferred rubble habitat reduced each species association with live coral. This study’s results indicate that in the field, habitat preferences and conspecific attraction combine to reinforce the association between cardinalfishes and a narrow range of coral substrata.  相似文献

动物使用生境中食物种类的方式对其适应性有重要的影响。为了研究黑叶猴在破碎化栖息地中利用食物的方式,2006年1—12月,采用焦点动物取样法和连续记录技术于每月初连续观察8 d,记录破碎化栖息地中黑叶猴取食的种类和时间,分析其食物多样性和月份间种类的重叠度。结果表明,黑叶猴年均食物多样性指数为3.03(范围1.93—2.62),且多样性指数在各月间没有显著的差异(One-sample K-S Test,P=0.99),说明黑叶猴在各月份中取食的食物种数相似,不同季节利用食物种数的变异程度不大。在所有的食物种类中,仅两种食物青檀Pteroceltis tatarinowii和潺槁树Litsea glutinosa在12个月份都被取食,其他种类则表现了月份间明显的季节性替代。各月份间食物种类的相似性在0.42(3—4月)和0.75(9—10月)之间变化。黑叶猴对破碎化生境中食物种类的利用方式是:首先利用常年均有的食物种类以保证食物来源稳定,同时选择性地利用新出现的种类,使食物种类多样化,满足不同的营养需求。  相似文献

During field research on winter adaptation to a high mountain environment of the rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta), a newly established alpha male killed an infant less than 1 year old. This is the first case of infanticide witnessed in a natural free-ranging population ofM. mulatta. It seems likely that the infanticide was facilitated by the high population density in the available habitat during the winter.  相似文献

This paper explains habitat use by Swainson’s Spurfowl Pternistis swainsonii on maize Zea mays and livestock farms on the Highveld south-east of Johannesburg, South Africa. The purpose is to describe habitat modification methods to manipulate the abundance of Swainson’s Spurfowl on Highveld farms where maize is produced. Field observations were conducted along a 100 km road transect during June 2014–May 2015. A hierarchical habitat analysis with three spatial levels was applied. The location of adult male Swainson’s Spurfowl was used as an indicator of habitat use. Females breed and rear broods in male territories. The micro (2.5-m-radius plot around the birds) and macro (>2.5-m-radius plot) habitats and landscape features were recorded for each sighting. Spurfowl moved within landscapes on a seasonal basis. A micro/macro combination linked with landscape features was a reliable indicator of spurfowl habitat preferences. Micro- and macro-habitats within landscapes can potentially be modified at a single spatial level, or a combination of levels, to manipulate spurfowl abundance on Highveld farms with maize production and livestock.  相似文献

Synopsis The distribution patterns, diets, and substratum (refuge) requirements of early juveniles of two sympatric stichaeid fishesCebidichthys violaceus andXiphister mucosus, were investigated in a rocky intertidal habitat at Diablo Canyon, California. Monthly investigations were conducted at low tide for four consecutive months, to assess ontogenetic differences in distribution, diet, and refuge requirements within and between the two species. Distinct differences in vertical zonation were exhibited by both stichaeids throughout the study. Interspecific zonation patterns were similar to those recorded for adults of both species. Diet analyses showed that early juveniles of both stichaeids were zooplanktivorous, differing markedly from the primarily herbivorous diets of adults. Changes in diet were largely due to the selection of larger prey taxa as both fishes, and their mouth size, grew over the study period. Predation by both fishes on water-column planktors (calanoid copepods, zoea and polychaete larvae) was greatest following initial intertidal settlement and habitat establishment by early juvenile fishes. Greater dependence on substrate-oriented and/or benthic prey (harpacticoid copepods, gammarid amphipods and mysid shrimp) was exhibited by both fishes as they grew in size. Affinities for sand, gravel, and pebbles during monthly field surveys were similar for both species throughout the study. As the fishes grew, their substratum preferences changed in relation to the substrata which provided the best refuge. Results from laboratory experiments indicated that young stichaeids select very specific substrata based on fish age (size) and substratum suitability (i.e. adequate refuge). Similarities in diet and substratum preferences, and changes in those preferences over time, appear to be the result of morphological similarities (body size and shape and mouth gape) for both species at a given age.  相似文献

Home gardens are defined as a system of production of diverse crop plant species, which can be adjacent to household or slightly further away and is easily accessible. Species composition and management systems of Nepalese home gardens are poorly known. The study was conducted to develop an inventory on composition of crop species and varietal diversity to characterise the home gardens of Rupandehi and Gulmi of western Nepal, and to observe the species change over the time for last 10–15 years. Semi-structured Interviews, Direct Observation and Focus Group Discussions were employed to collect primary data. Shannon–Weaver index (SWI) was used to determine the species richness. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was employed to characterise the home gardens. Mid-hill SWI (H′ = 4.41) revealed the higher species diversity (131 species) as compared to terai (123 species). This species richness was significantly higher (p = 0.001) in the mid-hill area. The vegetable species constitute the major component followed by fruits and fodder species that also contributed to the species diversity. The size of home gardens and species richness was positively correlated (r s = 0.29, p = 0.001). Twenty crop species have been lost during the last 10–15 years and eleven species were threatened in the studied home gardens. Inaccessibility of local seed crops and deforestation were the major causes reported accounting for this trend. Self-saved seed was the major source of planting material in home gardens. There is a need to study the seed supply system for these home gardens. Therefore, a challenge is to make these home gardens self-supporting through creating a mechanism on strengthening local seed supply systems for long term sustainability of home garden in agrobiodiversity management.  相似文献

Climate change is expected to pose a significant risk to species that exhibit strong behavioural preferences for specific habitat types, with generalist species assumed to be less vulnerable. In this study, we conducted habitat choice experiments to determine how water temperature influences habitat preference for three common species of coral reef damselfish (Pomacentridae) that differ in their levels of habitat specialisation. The lemon damselfish Pomacentrus moluccensis, a habitat specialist, consistently selected complex coral habitat across all temperature treatments (selected based on local average seasonal temperatures naturally experienced in situ: ambient winter 22°C; ambient summer 28°C; and elevated 31°C). Unexpectedly, the neon damselfish Pomacentrus coelestis and scissortail sergeant Abudefduf sexfasciatus, both of which have more generalist habitat associations, developed strong habitat preferences (for complex coral and boulder habitat, respectively) at the elevated temperature treatment (31°C) compared to no single preferred habitat at 22°C or 28°C. The observed shifts in habitat preference with temperature suggest that we may be currently underestimating the vulnerability of some habitat generalists to climate change and highlight that the ongoing loss of complex live coral through coral bleaching could further exacerbate resource overlap and species competition in ways not currently considered in climate change models.  相似文献

Primatologists have classified rhesus macaques of the Taihangshan Mountains area as Macaca mulatta tcheliensis, a subspecies confined to China. The northernmost area of its distribution is in the southern part of the Taihangshan Mountains, which includes a National Nature Reserve established in 1998. To investigate the current status of the subspecies, we surveyed the population and distribution of macaque groups in Jiyuan, Henan, China. In addition, we investigated habitat preferences and the food items foraged by macaques during winter and early spring. The results show that: 1) ca. 2100 macaques currently inhabit the Taihangshan Mountains National Nature Reserve, mainly in Jiyuan; 2) fragmentation of habitats of rhesus macaques have become severe in recent years; and 3) food resources are very poor during the long winter and the early spring. Macaques in the Taihangshan Mountains feed mainly on seeds, twigs, and bark and the eggs of some insects.  相似文献
