A major limitation in the utilization of a functional electrical stimulation (FES) orthosis for routine, daily standing and walking of the spinal-cord-injured person is that visual monitoring is required to maintain balance and the walking pace. For standing and walking to be continuous and automatic with such an orthosis, a closed-loop sensory feedback system is proposed and evaluated; it provides vibrotactile feedback as a substitute to one's own visual sensation. Eight blindfolded experimental subjects were utilized as ‘imitators’ to interpret the footfalls of a second person (the pace setter). The experimental objective was to test the hypothesis that sufficient information could be transferred by way of the sensory (tactile) feedback system to the ‘imitator’ and to determine effectively foot position and anticipate the next step of the pacesetter. Quantitative analysis evaluated the effect of three different levels of training, under two different levels of cognitive load. The results disclosed a significant improvement in subject performance at the higher training levels compared with the ‘no training’ level (P = 0.01). Neither the cognitive load nor the interaction of training and cognitive load altered significantly the effect of training on subject performance. The experimental hypothesis is therefore satisfied that sufficient information was indeed transferred using the apparatus described. Such information (when utilized in conjunction with a thorough training programme) could be used in a practical sense by a paraplegic individual to interpret his own foot steps. Through continued use and training, it is likely that this information could become subconscious and automatic. Therefore, the spinal-cord-injured person would walk with an FES orthosis in various environments and minimize or remove their reliance on visual sensory information.  相似文献

Male túngara frogs (Physalaemus pustulosus) vocalize to attract females, and enhance the attractiveness of their simple, whine-only call by adding chucks to produce complex calls. Complex calls contain more total energy and are of longer duration. By virtue of the greater frequency range of the chuck, complex calls also simultaneously stimulate both the amphibian papilla and the basilar papilla of the frog's inner ear. Female phonotaxis experiments using synthetic stimuli demonstrate that an increase in the call's acoustic energy is not sufficient to account for the enhanced attractiveness of the complex call. However, the stimulation of either or both of the female's sound-sensitive inner-ear organs is sufficient to elicit her preference. We suggest that the female's sensory system generates selection that equally favors at least three evolutionary alternatives for enhancing call attractiveness and that historical constraints imposed by the male's morphology determined which of the alternatives was more likely to evolve. These data are consistent with our hypothesis of sensory exploitation, which states that selection favors those traits that elicit greater stimulation from the female's sensory system and which emphasizes the nonadaptive nature of female preference.  相似文献

Background

Tripping over obstacles is the major cause of falls in community-dwelling patients with Parkinson''s disease (PD). Understanding the factors associated with the obstacle crossing behavior may help to develop possible training programs for crossing performance. This study aimed to identify the relationships and important factors determining obstacle crossing performance in patients with PD.

Methods

Forty-two idiopathic patients with PD (Hoehn and Yahr stages I to III) participated in this study. Obstacle crossing performance was recorded by the Liberty system, a three-dimensional motion capture device. Maximal isometric strength of the lower extremity was measured by a handheld dynamometer. Dynamic balance and sensory integration ability were assessed using the Balance Master system. Movement velocity (MV), maximal excursion (ME), and directional control (DC) were obtained during the limits of stability test to quantify dynamic balance. The sum of sensory organization test (SOT) scores was used to quantify sensory organization ability.

Results

Both crossing stride length and stride velocity correlated significantly with lower extremity muscle strength, dynamic balance control (forward and sideward), and sum of SOT scores. From the regression model, forward DC and ankle dorsiflexor strength were identified as two major determinants for crossing performance (R2 = .37 to.41 for the crossing stride length, R2 = .43 to.44 for the crossing stride velocity).

Conclusions

Lower extremity muscle strength, dynamic balance control and sensory integration ability significantly influence obstacle crossing performance. We suggest an emphasis on muscle strengthening exercises (especially ankle dorsiflexors), balance training (especially forward DC), and sensory integration training to improve obstacle crossing performance in patients with PD.  相似文献

摘要 目的:观察手足温针灸联合步行阶梯训练对老年糖尿病周围神经病变(DPN)患者步态异常、血流动力学和感觉及运动神经传导的影响。方法:按照随机数字表法将上海市第六人民医院2020年3月~2022年1月期间收治的119例老年DPN患者分为对照组(n=59,步行阶梯训练)和研究组(n=60,手足温针灸联合步行阶梯训练)。对比两组疗效、步态异常、血流动力学、临床症状改善情况和感觉及运动神经传导变化情况。结果:研究组91.67%的临床总有效率高于对照组72.88%(P<0.05)。研究组干预后的密歇根糖尿病神经病变评分(MDNS)和多伦多临床评分系统(TCSS)评分低于对照组(P<0.05)。研究组干预后的腓总神经及胫神经的感觉神经传导速度(SNCV)、运动神经传导速度(MNCV)高于对照组(P<0.05)。研究组干预后的全血黏度、血浆比黏度、纤维蛋白原低于对照组(P<0.05)。研究组足底压力中心轨迹(COP)曲线异常、全足平衡性曲线异常、全足压力变化曲线异常例数少于对照组(P<0.05)。结论:手足温针灸联合步行阶梯训练可促进老年DPN患者步态异常、血流动力学和感觉及运动神经传导恢复,疗效较好。  相似文献

目的:探讨感觉统合训练结合常规康复训练对痉挛型脑瘫患儿平衡控制及运动功能的影响。方法:选取2016年1月到2017年12月期间成都市妇女儿童中心医院康复科收治的痉挛型脑瘫患儿80例为研究对象,根据随机数字表法将80例患儿分为对照组(40例)和观察组(40例)。对照组患儿采用常规康复训练进行治疗,观察组患儿采用感觉统合训练结合常规康复训练进行治疗。比较两组脑瘫患儿的平衡控制功能、步态、粗大运动功能测试量表-88(GMFM-88)D区和E区的评分。结果:治疗3个月后两组患儿的Rivermead活动指数、Berg平衡量表得分均明显升高,且观察组患儿的Rivermead活动指数、Berg平衡量表得分高于对照组(P0.05)。治疗3个月后两组患儿的步行足长、步速明显增加,步宽明显减小(P0.05),且观察组患儿步行足长、步速大于对照组,步宽小于对照组(P0.05)。治疗3个月后两组患儿的GMFM-88 D区、GMFM-88 E区得分均分别明显升高(P0.05),且观察组患儿的GMFM-88 D区、GMFM-88 E区得分均分别高于对照组(P0.05)。结论:感觉统合训练结合常规康复训练可有效改善痉挛型脑瘫患儿的平衡控制功能、步态以及粗大运动功能。  相似文献

The current practice of sensory evaluation occurs in two general settings: the academic environment of a university laboratory and within the foods and consumer products industries. Sensory evaluation programs can differ in orientation, objectives, methodology and context, and viewed from the perspective of Brinberg's tripartite validity theory, focusing on experimental, theoretical and empirical paths. Differences in organizational goals and resources between academia and industry result in different uses of panels, statistics and collaborative efforts. Abstract

Stimuli and events that animals have to learn about in both their natural environments and in modern environments, such as our homes and farms, are often “multisensory,” i.e., they usually occur in more than one sensory modality. There are studies in humans and animals showing that stimuli that are multisensory are learned more quickly than stimuli presented in just a single sensory modality. My aim is to highlight how animals can combine information from several sensory modalities simultaneously, and show how using multisensory stimuli in training can enhance an animal's ability to learn new behaviors.  相似文献

In this article, I rely on Michel Foucault's notion of ‘technologies of the self’ to theorize the micro-practices by which individuals actively negotiate the reconfiguration of their sensory skills as a result of modernization processes. In doing so, I draw on ethnographic fieldwork I conducted in a collegiate jazz music program in the USA. By exploring a number of interactional games in which jazz students attempt to negotiate the challenge of cultivating aural skills in a pedagogical context that embraces visually mediated modes of knowledge production and transmission as a result of the professionalization and rationalization of jazz training, I inquire into the conditions of possibility for sensory agency under modernity.  相似文献

Knowledge is often thought to be something brought from outside to act upon the visual messages received from the eye in a ''top-down'' fashion, but this is a misleadingly narrow view. First, the visual system is a multilevel heterarchy with connections acting in all directions so it has no ''top''; and second, knowledge is provided through innately determined structure and by analysis of the redundancy in sensory messages themselves, as well as from outside. This paper gives evidence about mechanisms analysing sensory redundancy in biological vision. Automatic gain controls for luminance and contrast depend upon feedback from the input, and there are strong indications that the autocorrelation function, and other associations between input variables, affect the contrast sensitivity function and our subjective experience of the world. The associative structure of sensory message can provide much knowledge about the world we live in, and neural mechanisms that discount established associative structure in the input messages by recoding them can improve survival by making new structure more easily detectable. These mechanisms may be responsible for illusions, such as those produced by a concave face-mask, that are classically attributed to top-down influences.  相似文献

Background

When one watches a sports game, one may feel her/his own muscles moving in synchrony with the player''s. Such parallels between observed actions of others and one''s own has been well supported in the latest progress in neuroscience, and coined “mirror system.” It is likely that due to such phenomena, we are able to learn motor skills just by observing an expert''s performance. Yet it is unknown whether such indirect learning occurs only at higher cognitive levels, or also at basic sensorimotor levels where sensorimotor delay is compensated and the timing of sensory feedback is constantly calibrated.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Here, we show that the subject''s passive observation of an actor manipulating a computer mouse with delayed auditory feedback led to shifts in subjective simultaneity of self mouse manipulation and auditory stimulus in the observing subjects. Likewise, self adaptation to the delayed feedback modulated the simultaneity judgment of the other subjects manipulating a mouse and an auditory stimulus. Meanwhile, subjective simultaneity of a simple visual disc and the auditory stimulus (flash test) was not affected by observation of an actor nor self-adaptation.

Conclusions/Significance

The lack of shift in the flash test for both conditions indicates that the recalibration transfer is specific to the action domain, and is not due to a general sensory adaptation. This points to the involvement of a system for the temporal monitoring of actions, one that processes both one''s own actions and those of others.  相似文献

Evald Vasil'evich Ilyenkov was only two months younger than Aleksandr Ivanovich Meshcheriakov—a doctor of psychological sciences and posthumous winner (with his teacher Ivan Afanas'evich Sokolianskii) of the USSR State Prize in 1980 for their work to set up a system for training and educating deaf and blind children. Ilyenkov outlived Meshcheriakov by less than four and a half years. These men were the closest of friends. Ilyenkov not only followed Meshcheriakov's work but participated in it in an extremely active way. After the latter died, Ilyenkov directed and completed the training of four of Mescheriakov's deaf and blind students in the department of psychology of Lomonosov Moscow State University. In some animals, males evolve exaggerated traits (e.g. the peacock''s conspicuous tail and display) because of female preference. Recently Enquist and Arak presented a simple neural network model for a visual system in female birds that acquires the ability to discriminate males of the correct species from those of the wrong species by training. They reported that the trained networks were attracted by ''supernormal stimuli'' where there was a greater response to an exaggerated form than to the images used as the correct species for training. They suggested that signal recognition mechanisms have an inevitable bias in response, which in turn causes selection on signal form. We here examine the Enquist and Arak model in detail. A three-layered neural network is used to represent the female''s mate preference, which consists of 6 by 6 receptor cells arranged on a regular square lattice, ten hidden cells, and one output cell. Connection weights of the network were modified by a genetic algorithm, in which the female''s fitness increases if she accepts a conspecific male but decreases if she accepts a male of a different species or a random image. We found that: (i) after the training period the evolved network was able to discriminate male images. Female preference evolves to favour unfamiliar patterns if they are similar to the images of the correct species (generalization); (ii) the speed and the final degree of learning depended critically on the choice of the random images that are rejected. The learning was much less successful if the random images were changed every generation than if 20 random images were fixed throughout the training period; (iii) the male of the same species used for training achieved the highest probability of being accepted by the trained network. Hence, contrary to Enquist and Arak, the evolved network was not attracted by supernormal stimuli.  相似文献

Voluntary motor commands produce two kinds of consequences. Initially, a sensory consequence is observed in terms of activity in our primary sensory organs (e.g., vision, proprioception). Subsequently, the brain evaluates the sensory feedback and produces a subjective measure of utility or usefulness of the motor commands (e.g., reward). As a result, comparisons between predicted and observed consequences of motor commands produce two forms of prediction error. How do these errors contribute to changes in motor commands? Here, we considered a reach adaptation protocol and found that when high quality sensory feedback was available, adaptation of motor commands was driven almost exclusively by sensory prediction errors. This form of learning had a distinct signature: as motor commands adapted, the subjects altered their predictions regarding sensory consequences of motor commands, and generalized this learning broadly to neighboring motor commands. In contrast, as the quality of the sensory feedback degraded, adaptation of motor commands became more dependent on reward prediction errors. Reward prediction errors produced comparable changes in the motor commands, but produced no change in the predicted sensory consequences of motor commands, and generalized only locally. Because we found that there was a within subject correlation between generalization patterns and sensory remapping, it is plausible that during adaptation an individual''s relative reliance on sensory vs. reward prediction errors could be inferred. We suggest that while motor commands change because of sensory and reward prediction errors, only sensory prediction errors produce a change in the neural system that predicts sensory consequences of motor commands.  相似文献

Due to its high sensitivity and conductivity, electrotactile stimulation (ETS) on the tongue has proven to be a useful and technically convenient tool to substitute and/or augment sensory capabilities. However, most of its applications have only provided spatial attributes and little is known about (a) the ability of the tongue's sensory system to process electrical stimuli of varying magnitudes and (b) how modulation of ETS intensity affects subjects’ ability to decode stimulus intensity. We addressed these questions by quantifying: (1) the magnitude of the dynamic range (DR; maximal comfortable intensity/perception threshold) and its sensitivity to prolonged exposure; (2) subjects’ ability to perceive intensity changes; and (3) subjects’ ability to associate intensity with angular excursions of a protractor's handle. We found that the average DR (17 dB) was generally large in comparison with other tactile loci and of a relatively constant magnitude among subjects, even after prolonged exposure, despite a slight but significant upward drift (p < 0.001). Additionally, our results showed that as stimulus intensity increased, subjects’ ability to discriminate ETS stimuli of different intensities improved (p < 0.05) while estimation accuracy, in general, slightly decreased (increasing underestimation). These results suggest that higher ETS intensity may increase recruitment of rapidly adapting mechanoreceptor fibers, as these are specialized for coding stimulus differences rather than absolute intensities. Furthermore, our study revealed that the tongue's sensory system can effectively convey electrical stimuli despite minimal practice and when information transfer is limited by memory and DR drift.  相似文献

Even though the importance of selection for trait evolution is well established, we still lack a functional understanding of the mechanisms underlying phenotypic selection. Because animals necessarily use their sensory system to perceive phenotypic traits, the model of sensory bias assumes that sensory systems are the main determinant of signal evolution. Yet, it has remained poorly known how sensory systems contribute to shaping the fitness surface of selected individuals. In a greenhouse experiment, we quantified the strength and direction of selection on floral coloration in a population of cornflowers exposed to bumblebees as unique pollinators during 4 days. We detected significant selection on the chromatic and achromatic (brightness) components of floral coloration. We then studied whether these patterns of selection are explicable by accounting for the visual system of the pollinators. Using data on bumblebee colour vision, we first showed that bumblebees should discriminate among quantitative colour variants. The observed selection was then compared to the selection predicted by psychophysical models of bumblebee colour vision. The achromatic but not the chromatic channel of the bumblebee's visual system could explain the observed pattern of selection. These results highlight that (i) pollinators can select quantitative variation in floral coloration and could thus account for a gradual evolution of flower coloration, and (ii) stimulation of the visual system represents, at least partly, a functional mechanism potentially explaining pollinators' selection on floral colour variants.  相似文献

目的:检测儿童的情绪能力,从而检验儿童情绪能力发展是否正常以及协助训练孤独症儿童的情绪能力。方法:设计了一套便携式的儿童情绪感知系统,检测儿童的情绪能力。本系统由心率信号采集模块,PC机端的软件以及情绪能力数据分析组成。结果:研制的儿童情绪能力感知系统具有便携、可穿戴等优点,能够准确地检测儿童情绪能力。结论:儿童情绪能力感知系统能够检测使用者的情绪能力,也能够在儿童情绪能力干预训练中记录孤独症儿童的情绪变化,为干预训练提供帮助。  相似文献
