Previous researchers of hamadryas baboons have described a star-shaped sociogram, whereby the strongest social bonds within hamadryas one-male units are between a leader male and his females and bonds among females are weak by comparison. This type of social organization is also known as cross-bonding to distinguish it from the female-bonding found in most papionin monkeys. Models of female primate socioecology suggest that hamadryas baboons lack female bonding due to their reliance on scarce, widely-dispersed food resources. Here, I report observational data from a wild population of hamadryas baboons in Ethiopia indicating that, while females varied widely in their frequency of social interaction with other females, most females spent about as much social time with other females as they did with the leader male and some females even crossed unit boundaries to interact with one another. The size of a unit was positively correlated with the tendency of its females to interact with other females and was negatively correlated with the tendency of its females to interact with the leader male. Females were equally likely to spend social time with other females whether or not the leader male was available for social interaction at the time. Overall, this study suggests that a star-shaped sociogram does not characterize all hamadryas baboons and that female hamadryas may be, to some extent, female-bonded as well as cross-bonded. The lack of more pronounced female bonding in hamadryas is probably due to the behavior of males rather than to ecological factors.  相似文献

Reconstruction of Parentage in a Band of Captive Hamadryas Baboons   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The male leaders of free-ranging harem groups of hamadryas baboons are believed to mate exclusively with the female members of their harems, which typically contain no more than 2–3 females. Using no-parent parentage exclusion analysis (PEA) we identified the paternity of 25 offspring born in a captive band of hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) containing five adult males, each with a stable harem of about five females. Nine of 13 microsatellite (SSR) loci known to be highly polymorphic in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were successful in identifying the sires of all but two offspring without knowledge of the dams' genotypes, and we were able to determine the sires of all offspring when the dams' genotypes were considered. Mating success of the males ranged between 2 and 7 offspring and bore no clear relationship to the males' ages, ranks or the number of females in their harems. The males sired 7 of the 25 offspring with females outside their own harems, with higher-ranking males exhibiting greater success monopolizing access to females in their harem than lower-ranking males did. More surprisingly, the females assigned as the dams of 14 of the 25 offspring could be unequivocally excluded from parentage. The identity of the true dam could be determined for each of these 14 offspring using single-parent PEA and was uncorrelated with the ranks of these offsprings' sires and whether the offspring were born to dams outside the sires' harem groups. The combined effect of this extraharem mating and kidnapping was that only 12 of the 25 offspring were raised within their sires' harem groups. A second group of hamadryas baboons of identical structure exhibited the same high incidences of infant kidnapping and mating outside the harem group. It is unclear whether these behaviors provide an adaptive advantage or represent aberrant behavior resulting from captivity or other circumstances.  相似文献

During a survey of the geographical distribution and abundance of hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) in central Eritrea, we collected detailed demographic data on six bands at four sites in different ecogeographical zones. The proportions of age-sex classes within the six bands differed only with respect to juveniles. The general social organization of the Eritrean hamadryas baboons is similar to that reported for Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia. Eritrean hamadryas baboons live in a nested fission-fusion system, with one-male units as the basic social entity. Although the baboons were not provisioned, as they are in many places in Saudi Arabia, and habitat quality in Eritrea is lower than that in Ethiopia, sex-ratios and group composition corresponded more to those found in the Saudi Arabian population. Sex-ratios within the study population, in bands and also in one-male units were significantly more female-biased than in Ethiopian ones, and one-male units tended to be larger. Data from Eritrea suggest that these differences are due to a combination of a heavily fluctuating rainfall pattern and differential maturation of the sexes.  相似文献

Multilevel or modular societies characterize a range of mammalian taxa, allowing social groups to fission and fuse in response to ecological factors. The modular society of hamadryas baboons has previously been shown to consist of 4 levels: troop, band, clan, and one-male unit (OMU). A recent study by Hill et al. (Biology Letters 4:748–751, 2008) revealed a mean scaling ratio across successive levels of multilevel societies of ca. 3; this was consistent across elephants, orca, geladas, and hamadryas baboons. Here we reanalyze the scaling ratio for hamadryas baboons with previously unavailable data from Filoha. Our analysis revealed a mean scaling ratio for hamadryas of 3.28 without data on the hamadryas clan layer of organization at Filoha, but a ratio of 6.17 with these data included. This discrepancy is due to the large clan and band sizes at Filoha yielding a larger than average gap between the OMU and the clan. Further analysis revealed subsets of OMUs within clans, suggesting a 5th level of society in this population. When this 5th layer of social structure is included in the analysis, the scaling ratio at Filoha is consistent with that of other hamadryas populations and other taxa. These results suggest that a consistent mammalian scaling ratio can be used to detect previously hidden levels of organization within societies and to predict their sizes in taxa for which detailed behavioral data are not available.  相似文献

We report body mass and testicular size in 258 anubis (Papio anubis or P. hamadryas anubis) and 59 hamadryas (P. hamadryas or P. h. hamadryas) baboons, live-trapped in Ethiopia. As predicted by theories of sexual selection by sperm competition, among hamadryas baboons, which are monandrous, fully adult males have absolutely and relatively smaller testes than those of comparable males among anubis baboons, which are polyandrous. Male hamadryas are also ca. 10% smaller in bodily mass as adults. The intertaxonal difference in adults is due entirely to the fact that in male anubis baboons, testicular and bodily mass continue to grow up to full adulthood–the age at which most males emigrate from their natal troop and initiate a confrontational breeding strategy among unrelated animals. By contrast, male hamadryas baboons, which are usually philopatric, attain adult body mass and testicular size as subadults. In both species, juveniles experience rapid testicular growth peaking in rate at ca. 12kg body mass, but testicular descent and growth starts earlier in hamadryas than in anubis baboons. Juvenile hamadryas baboons have relatively larger testes than their anubis equivalents, perhaps because male philopatry allows the mating strategy of male hamadryas baboons to be initiated during juvenile life and therefore permits some sperm competition between juveniles and adults.  相似文献

Comparative investigations of hormone concentration and pattern during ontogeny can offer insight regarding the evolution of growth trajectories. Anubis (Papio anubis) and hamadryas (P. hamadryas) baboons exemplify primate populations at a crucial stage of phylogenetic divergence. Though not reproductively isolated, the species are distinguished by consistent morphological, behavioral, and physiological differences, including trajectories of growth and maturation associated with divergent male reproductive strategies. As a step toward understanding the proximate causes of these differences, we tested several hypotheses regarding the relationship of growth-regulatory hormones and binding proteins (insulin-like growth factor-I, insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 [IGFBP-3], growth hormone binding protein, and testosterone) to growth in several measurements. We collected samples (N = 559) across 13 field seasons, from 7 different social groups. Samples came from 398 different individuals. We sampled 285 once; 76, twice; 29, three times; 5, four times; and 3, five times. Although ages at peak hormone concentrations were not significantly different, concentrations of all hormones and binding proteins measured, except testosterone, were higher in hamadryas than in anubis. All factors measured correlated positively with growth in both species, and IGFBP-3 and testosterone in particular correlated significantly with growth in all measurements. Overall, our findings suggest a role for the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor axis in producing distinctive patterns of growth in these species.  相似文献

Bone neoplasms in baboons (Papio spp) are rare, with only one confirmed case of osteosarcoma previously described in the literature. Over a 12-y period, 6 baboons at a national primate research center presented with naturally occurring osteosarcoma; 3 lesions affected the appendicular skeleton, and the remaining 3 were in the head (skull and mandible). The 6 cases presented were identified in members of a large outdoor-housed breeding colony. The subjects were not genetically related or exposed to the same research conditions. Diagnoses were made based on the presentation and radiographic findings, with histologic confirmation.Neoplasia remains a highly prevalent condition across the majority of species. A recent survey of a large baboon colony identified 395 neoplasms among 4297 animals.6 The most common neoplasms documented in NHP include lymphosarcoma, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.8 Tumors involving the musculoskeletal system are much rarer than are the other previously mentioned types. The musculoskeletal neoplasms reported most prominently in the literature are osteoma, osteosarcoma, odontoma, and various types of myxoma, with Macaca spp being the NHP affected most often.5 However, this apparent prevalence may be artifactual due to the use of far more animals of Macaca spp compared with other NHP species.Osteosarcoma is an infrequently documented neoplasm among NHP, and it is particularly rare in baboons (Papio spp.). Combined-type osteosarcoma in a rhesus macaque,4 extraosseous osteosarcoma in a rhesus macaque,17 and osteoblastic osteosarcoma in a gray mouse lemur have been reported.18 Among 4 reported cases of bone tumors in baboons, only one was confirmed as osteosarcoma and involved the mandibular ramus of a male baboon.8,12,24 Another neoplasm, identified on the distal aspect of the right ulna of a baboon, initially was described in a review article as a giant cell tumor22 but was later referred to as a fibrosarcoma23 and then as an osteosarcoma,19 thus making the confirmed diagnosis unclear. The remaining 2 known cases of bone tumors in baboons were osteomas present in the tibia and femur.8,12 Three other osteosarcomas were included in reviews of pathology from the Southwest National Primate Research Center (San Antonio, TX), but detailed clinical and pathologic information was not described.6,7,9  相似文献

Motor alalia refers to a number of disorders of expressive speech that are caused by the dysfunction of cerebral structures in the period when the formation of the speech system is not complete. This form of speech disorder is considered as a language disorder characterized by a persistent disturbance of the assimilation of a system of linguistic units. The possible cause of deviations in the development of speech function in children is a disproportion in the levels of development of speech structures in the left and right hemispheres, and this temporary dominance is often associated with an increased activity in the right hemisphere. According to the results of electroencephalographic studies, in children aged five to six years, there are two types of changes of the bioelectric potential system interaction of the brain cortex. The disorders of the spatial organization of interregional EEG correlations are more pronounced in either the left or right hemispheres of the brain. Thus, motor alalia can be accompanied either by disturbances in the interaction between Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas of the left hemisphere, or between symmetrical areas of the right hemisphere.  相似文献

This report describes hemochromatosis associated with chronic parenteral iron dextran administration in 2 female olive baboons (Papio anubis). These baboons were enrolled on an experimental protocol that induced and maintained anemia by periodic phlebotomy for use in studying potential treatments for sickle cell anemia. The 2 baboons both presented with clinical signs consistent with iron overload, including decreased appetite, weight loss, elevated liver enzymes, and hepatosplenomegaly. Histopathologic findings supported a morphologic diagnosis of systemic hemosiderosis, as evidenced by the overwhelming presence of iron in the reticuloendothelial system and liver after the application of Prussian blue stain. This finding, combined with the clinical presentation, lead to a final diagnosis of hemochromatosis. This case report suggests that providing anemic patients with chronic parenteral iron supplementation in the absence of iron deficiency can result in iatrogenic iron overload and subsequent systemic toxicity. Furthermore, these subjects may present with hemochromatosis and its associated clinical signs many years after cessation of iron supplementation.

Iron is an essential micronutrient that plays an important role in cellular proliferation, oxygen transport, and cellular energy generation.13,26,31 The highest levels of iron in the body is found in the erythrocytes, followed by the liver, reticuloendothelial system, and skeletal muscle.9 Three main mechanisms regulate iron: 1) dietary absorption through the proximal duodenum; 2) recycling of senescent red blood cells by macrophages; and 3) storage in the liver. The liver produces the hormone hepcidin, which is the primary negative regulator of systemic iron metabolism.38 Hepcidin controls the release of iron from enterocytes and macrophages into the circulation by binding to and degrading ferroportin, the only mammalian iron exporter.35 When plasma iron levels are high, hepatocytes increase hepcidin synthesis. The increased hepcidin subsequently suppresses gastrointestinal absorption of exogenous iron and iron release from macrophages into circulation.31Approximately 1 to 2 mg of iron is lost per day through enterocyte and skin sloughing.38 Iron can also be lost by hemorrhage, menstruation, and parasitic infestation.38 Other than these, the body has no active mechanism for iron excretion. Iron overload can result from acute iron toxicity or chronic accumulation of iron over time.35 Iron is primarily stored in the liver in the form of ferritin, and excess iron is transformed into hemosiderin, an oxidized form of ferritin. Hemosiderin is an iron-containing pigment found primarily in macrophages and hepatocytes.35Hemosiderosis occurs when iron accumulates in tissues, but causes no subsequent organ injury or dysfunction. It is not typically pathologic and can be reversed.9 In contrast, hemochromatosis occurs when iron accumulation results in organ injury and dysfunction.35 The 2 types of hemochromatosis are primary and secondary. Primary hemochromatosis, also known as hereditary hemochromatosis, is the result of inherited mutations in genes that are important for iron homeostasis. The most common gene involved in primary hemochromatosis is HFE, an autosomal recessive trait.11 Almost all forms of primary hemochromatosis involve low levels of hepcidin expression.11 Secondary hemochromatosis can occur due to iron-loading anemias such as thalassemia and sideroblastic anemia, chronic liver disease (for example, hepatitis C), and iatrogenic causes, such as excess iron in the diet or parenteral administration.16 Hemolytic anemia and repeated blood transfusions can also result in secondary hemochromatosis.35 In primary hemochromatosis, iron typically accumulates in the liver, pancreas, heart, and endocrine glands for many years.16,24 In contrast, secondary hemochromatosis patients often accumulate iron in the reticuloendothelial system, bone marrow, and lymph nodes16 over a shorter time period,24 with excess iron accumulating in the hepatocytes after the reticuloendothelial system has become saturated with iron.16 Symptoms of iron overload can vary among individuals due to the number of organ systems affected. These symptoms may include lethargy, arthralgia, skin hyperpigmentation, abdominal pain, abnormal liver chemistry tests, and hepatomegaly.15 In the current report, we describe 2 cases of hemochromatosis in female baboons after chronic parenteral administration of iron dextran as part of an anemia maintenance protocol used to study sickle cell anemia treatments.  相似文献

The relational model of conflict resolution predicts that after an aggressive conflict there should be a motivational shift from aggression to attraction. Most tests of the reconciliation hypothesis assume, however, that all non‐aggressive post‐conflict behaviours between former opponents are motivationally homogeneous and qualify as friendly reunions. In fact, although the hypothesis predicts an increased occurrence of friendly contacts after conflicts, in practice, however, post‐conflict reunions often include a mixture of contact and non‐contact behaviours. Most reconciliation studies either (often) assume a conciliatory function for post‐conflict reunions or (less often) test functional predictions. Finally, the valuable relationships hypothesis predicts that conciliatory rates should be relatively higher between friends and allies than between non‐friends/allies. In this paper, we use data on non‐aggressive interactions following conflicts between adult male hamadryas baboons that are neither friends nor allies to assess the implications of all these important but largely overlooked issues. The analyses of the rate and temporal relation of non‐contact greeting (NCTG) to anxiety‐related behaviours and side‐directed aggression as well as of the behaviours used during non‐aggressive interactions with male and female third‐parties suggest that the NCTG used by males after conflicts were neither motivationally friendly nor functionally conciliatory. We point out that the gestures exchanged during these post‐conflict NCTG can be interpreted as formalized signals of equal status and that the rate and form of the greetings used by male opponents are indicative of high relationship insecurity and incompatibility respectively. We conclude that although male hamadryas’ post‐conflict NCTG are not conciliatory they may serve to assess their opponents’ attitude and to negotiate the restoring of their pre‐conflict levels of peaceful but non‐amicable co‐existence.  相似文献

Chacma baboons (Papio cynocephalus ursinus) show a lower consortship take‐over rate and longer consortship duration than the other savannah baboons ( Bulger 1993 ). It has been argued that researchers have focused on atypically small troops with few adult males, resulting in low competition for access to oestrous females. Consortship data from two mountain baboon troops containing seven and four males, respectively, were analysed to determine whether the troop with the greater number of males showed a weaker correlation between mating success and rank due to an expected higher consortship take‐over rate. No consort take‐overs were observed in either study troop and mating success in both troops was correlated strongly with male rank. The distribution of days spent in consortship amongst the males could be explained by the priority‐of‐access‐model. The degree of cycle overlap determined the number of males observed consorting oestrous females, whereas the number of males did not influence the relationship between rank and consorting activity.  相似文献

Summary Phenotyping for Gc variants by conventional electrophoresis in 835 Papio hamadryas baboons demonstrated a monomorphic population. Gc subtyping by polyacrylamide IEF gels, pH 4–6, on 394 of these baboons revealed the existence of two common alleles which we named Gc Papio 1 and Gc Papio 2 . Pedigree data confirmed the inheritance of a single locus, two allele system and the observed gene frequencies were 0.593 for Gc Papio 1 and 0.407 for Gc Papio 2 .  相似文献

The evolutionary origin of Primates' exceptionally large brains is still highly debated. Two competing explanations have received much support: the ecological hypothesis and the social brain hypothesis (SBH). We tested the SBH in (n = 82) baboons (Papio anubis) belonging to the same research centre but housed in groups with size ranging from 2 to 63 individuals. We found that baboons living in larger social groups had larger brains. This effect was driven mainly by white matter volume and to a lesser extent by grey matter volume but not by the cerebrospinal fluid. In comparison, the size of the enclosure, an ecological variable, had no such effect. In contrast to the current re-emphasis on potential ecological drivers of primate brain evolution, the present study provides renewed support for the social brain hypothesis and suggests that the social brain plastically responds to group size. Many factors may well influence brain size, yet accumulating evidence suggests that the complexity of social life might be an important determinant of brain size in primates.  相似文献

In experiments on rats, we modeled neurogenic stress-induced emotional disorders (stress was evoked by repetitive nociceptive stimulation) and studied their peculiarities within the stressory and post-stressory periods. In these animals, drastic changes in the brain electrical activity and emotional behavior gradually developed; such changes were manifested over a long time period after cessation of the stressory influences. Our experiments demonstrated that tight and stable interrelations among brain limbic structures and negative hypothalamic emotional centers are formed under conditions of prolonged action of emotional stress. This results in the development of a protracted state of negative emotional excitation. The hippocampus is considered one of the key limbic structures responsible for the development of stable pathological stress-related reactions of the brain. Within the post-stressory period, we observed dramatic worsening of the general functional state of the animals, which developed in a parallel manner with intensification of the activity of the negative emotiogenic brain system. It is probable that the existence of periods of unstable equilibrium between oppositely directed emotional reactions in the dynamics of stress and after cessation of stressory influences is a common rule. Such periods reflect peculiarities of rearrangements in the adaptive brain mechanisms under conditions of a stable change in the mode of brain functioning in one particular situation or another.  相似文献

At least three diurnal primate taxa are still present in Eritrea, NE Africa: hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas), olive baboons (Papio h. anubis) and grivet monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops aethiops). However, information on status and distribution of primates and their habitats in Eritrea is outdated and incomplete. We conducted a primate survey, focussing on hamadryas baboons, to obtain data which will be integrated in a national wildlife management and conservation plan in Eritrea. We obtained information about the geographical distribution and abundance of baboons, their altitudinal range, habitat quality of their home-ranges, aggregation sizes at sleeping cliffs and predator presence. We described habitat quality via the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a vegetation classification of Landsat MSS satellite data. Hamadryas and olive baboons are still present in Eritrea in ample numbers. Their geographical distributions in 1997 and 1998 did not deviate significantly from their historical distributions. An estimated 15,000 Papio hamadryas hamadryas lived in the 25,000-km2 area of survey (0.58 baboons/km2). Population densities of hamadryas baboons in many parts of the survey area are higher than at Kummer's (1968) study site in Ethiopia. Hamadryas baboons live at all altitudes in four of five ecogeographical zones of Eritrea. Olive baboons replaced them in the western lowlands. Both baboon taxa tend to select better quality habitats, characterized by a higher normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) than the average for the respective ecogeographical zones. Hamadryas baboons show a greater ecological plasticity than olive baboons, which are confined to riverbeds with extended gallery forest. By the end of 1999, a hybrid zone could not be confirmed.  相似文献

We aimed to determine taste preference thresholds for 5 food-associated sugars in Papio hamadryas anubis. In a 2-bottle preference test of brief duration (2 min) 4 subadult baboons significantly preferred concentrations as low as 10 mM sucrose, 20 mM fructose, lactose, and maltose, and 25 mM glucose over tap water. Presentation of suprathreshold sugar solutions led to marked concentration-dependent polydipsia. The results show that baboons are among the most sugar-sensitive nonhuman primates tested so far and, thus, support the assumption that Papio hamadryas anubis may use sweetness as a criterion for food selection.  相似文献

We investigated genetic variation at six microsatellite (simple sequence repeat) loci in yellow baboons (Papio hamadryas cynocephalus) at two localities: the Tana River Primate Reserve in eastern Kenya and Mikumi National Park, central Tanzania. The six loci (D1S158, D2S144, D4S243, D5S1466, D16S508, and D17S804) were all originally cloned from and characterized in the human genome. These microsatellites are polymorphic in both baboon populations, with the average heterozygosity across loci equal to 0.731 in the Tana River sample and 0.787 in the Mikumi sample. The genetic differentiation between the two populations is substantial. Kolmogornov–Smirnov tests indicate that five of the six loci are significantly different in allele frequencies in the two populations. The mean F ST across loci is 0.069, and Shriver's measure of genetic distance, which was developed for microsatellite loci (Shriver et al., 1995), is 0.255. This genetic distance is larger than corresponding distances among human populations residing in different continents. We conclude that (a) the arrays of alleles present at these six microsatellite loci in two geographically separated populations of yellow baboons are quite similar, but (b) the two populations exhibit significant differences in allele frequencies. This study illustrates the potential value of human microsatellite loci for analyses of population genetic structure in baboons and suggests that this approach will be useful in studies of other Old World monkeys.  相似文献

A growing body of literature suggests that the ratio between the second and fourth digits of the hands (2D:4D ratio) is associated with exposure to prenatal sex hormones in a variety of animals including primates. Female baboons form dominance hierarchies composed of matrilines of related individuals, and the social mechanisms contributing to the structure of these hierarchies have been well studied. We here investigated the relationship between inferred prenatal androgen effects (PAE) and female rank in a captive troop of Hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) with a typical social structure and three captive groups of chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) made up entirely of unrelated orphans. Low 2D:4D ratios (high inferred PAE) were associated with higher-ranking females and high 2D:4D ratios (low inferred PAE) with lower-ranking females in both focal species. This negative correlation between 2D:4D ratio and rank suggests prenatal androgens are linked with the maintenance of female ranks within matrilines in troops with a natural social structure and to the ranks acquired by orphan females.  相似文献
