Effects of terrestrial buffer zones on amphibians on golf courses   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

A major cause of amphibian declines worldwide is habitat destruction or alteration. Public green spaces, such as golf courses and parks, could serve as safe havens to curb the effects of habitat loss if managed in ways to bolster local amphibian communities. We reared larval Blanchard's cricket frogs (Acris blanchardi) and green frogs (Rana clamitans) in golf course ponds with and without 1 m terrestrial buffer zones, and released marked cricket frog metamorphs at the golf course ponds they were reared in. Larval survival of both species was affected by the presence of a buffer zone, with increased survival for cricket frogs and decreased survival for green frogs when reared in ponds with buffer zones. No marked cricket frog juveniles were recovered at any golf course pond in the following year, suggesting that most animals died or migrated. In a separate study, we released cricket frogs in a terrestrial pen and allowed them to choose between mown and unmown grass. Cricket frogs had a greater probability of using unmown versus mown grass. Our results suggest that incorporating buffer zones around ponds can offer suitable habitat for some amphibian species and can improve the quality of the aquatic environment for some sensitive local amphibians.  相似文献

It has been suggested that phenotypic plasticity can facilitate evolutionary diversification of organisms. If life-history and morphological diversification across a lineage is mirrored in diversification in the same traits due to phenotypic plasticity within a lineage it fulfils one of the expectations that are needed to support this diversification hypothesis. We carried out a laboratory study to examine development rate and morphology between and within populations of the parsley frog, Pelodytes punctatus. We found that frogs reared in the laboratory had a longer development time, relatively longer hind legs and relatively narrower heads under constant water level compared to those under decreasing water level simulating pool drying. This adaptive phenotypic plasticity response to pool drying was mirrored across populations because frogs from permanent waters had longer development times, relatively longer hind legs and relatively narrower heads compared to frogs from temporary waters. Hence the developmental and morphological plasticity observed within populations was also observed between populations as constitutive expressed traits. We suggest that the morphology pattern observed was driven by a common developmental process (time to metamorphosis), indicating that plasticity may contribute to evolutionary change, ultimately resulting in genetic accommodation of the morphological traits.  相似文献

Nine frogs of the species "Rana esculenta" were heart perfused with Microfile Silicone Rubber. The frogs were examined both after dissection (cut with a razor blade) to study the superficial blood vessel pattern, and histologically (the Nissl staining method) to study the distribution of the deep blood capillaries. While the superficial blood vary in pattern, the deep capillaries are distributed symmetrically. This finding does not support a correlation between blood vessel pattern and morphological brain asymmetry, at least in the frog, and thus other explanations must be sought to explain brain asymmetry.  相似文献

Male advertisement vocalization in frogs is known to be one of the energetically most expensive activities of ectothermic vertebrates. Glucocorticoids have marked effects on energy metabolism, and, generally, plasma concentrations of glucocorticoids increase during the course of prolonged exercise bouts. Androgen concentrations are also known to vary considerably among breeding male frogs. Intraspecific and interspecific comparisons were used to test for a relationship among androgen concentration, corticosterone concentration, testis mass, and the energetics of vocalization in natural populations of calling male frogs. The results of this study indicate that: (1) intraspecific variation in androgen and corticosteroid concentrations in breeding male frogs is positively correlated as a result of both interindividual variation in the amount of performed vocalization and the relationship between calling effort of an individual male and the level of calling in other males, (2) interspecific variation in corticosteroid concentration of calling male frogs is correlated with the relative energy expended in the species-specific vocalization, and (3) when differences in testis mass are controlled for, vocalization effort is correlated with androgen concentration among species of breeding male frogs. These findings are in contrast to some recent work reported from laboratory experiments on calling frogs.  相似文献

Kin recognition was investigated in newly metamorphosed Rana cascadae frogs. Previous work has shown that larvae of this species prefer to associated with siblings over non-siblings. Juvenile frogs from three clutches were reared with siblings and tested for sibling preference as larvae and at 4–12 days and 39–47 days after metamorphosis. Tadpoles and froglets of the three clutches displayed a significant preference to associate with siblings.  相似文献

To investigate the idea that sexual imprinting creates incipient reproductive isolation between phenotypically diverging populations, I performed experiments to determine whether colony-reared zebra finches would imprint on details of artificial white crests. In the first experiment, adults in one breeding colony wore white crests with a vertical black stripe, while in another colony adults wore crests having a horizontal black stripe; except for their crests, breeders possessed wild-type plumage and conformation. Offspring of both sexes reared in these colonies developed mate preferences for opposite-sexed birds wearing the crest type with which they were reared; neither sex developed a social preference for crested individuals of the same sex. In a second experiment, females reared by crested parents preferred crested males versus males with red leg bands, while control females (reared in a colony of wild-type, uncrested birds) preferred red-banded males in the same test. Results of a third experiment that used sexually dimorphic crest phenotypes indicate that both sexes of offspring imprinted on maternal crest patterns. Results support the hypothesis that sexual imprinting can facilitate isolation both by engendering a preference for population-typical traits and by prioritizing such an imprinting-based preference over species-typical preferences for other traits used in mate choice. Comparison with results of other recent studies indicates that imprinting tendencies of both sexes vary with the characteristics of traits presented as an imprinting stimuli. Tendency to imprint may vary with the perceived information content (e.g., kin, sex, or population indicator) of parental traits, a process dubbed selective sexual imprinting.  相似文献

Northern leopard frogs are afflicted with a spontaneous malignantneoplasm of the mesonephros. A herpesvirus is invariably associatedwith tumors obtained from frogs hibernating 30 days or longerand in tumors of frogs taken from breeding ponds. Tumors obtainedfrom prehibernating frogs do not have viruses as detected byelectron microscopy but virus particles are found in some tumorswithin 7 days after the onset of hibernation. Tumors of frogsmaintained at warm temperature in the laboratory do not haveviruses and tumors of frogs maintained at cold temperaturesin the laboratory do contain viruses. However, the productionof viruses in the laboratory follows a distinctly slower chronologythan that which occurs in nature. Injection of cell fractionscontaining the herpesvirus into frog embryos induces tumorsnear the time of metamorphosis in many experimental animals.Embryos injected with tumor extracts not containing herpesvirusesdo not develop tumors. Environmental and laboratory observationsare discussed which may relate to natural transmission of thispresumed viral oncogenic agent.  相似文献

As representatives of organisms with complex life histories, frogs provide an ideal system to study predator‐induced carryover effects: how the risk of predation in one life stage can impact predator–prey interactions in a later stage. Invertebrate predation on frogs has been widely reported, although studies of the behavioral mechanisms underlying their interactions in the terrestrial stage have been lacking. We made detailed observations of interactions between a wolf spider (Tigrosa helluo) and Blanchard's cricket frog (Acris blanchardi) to determine factors that predict capture success and to evaluate potential carryover effects from aquatic predation risk. Juvenile frogs, reared with or without dragonfly predator cues, were placed in an arena with or without spider cues and allowed to interact with a spider. Spiders captured frogs, and an interaction between frog size and activity predicted frog survival. We found no evidence that either aquatic or terrestrial cues altered frog behavior or survival. By preying upon a demographically important life stage, spiders may contribute to population dynamics in frogs.  相似文献

Male Pacific treefrogs (Hyla regilla) aggregate in choruses during the breeding season. Within these choruses frogs distribute themselves nonrandomly. This study tested the hypothesis that the amplitude of neighbors' calls serves as a proximate cue in regulating the spacing of males in choruses, and that this is mediated by the incidence of aggressive-encounter calls by resident males. The amplitude of neighbors' calls showed little interindividual variation. Advertisement calls were played to males at three amplitudes that spanned the range of neighbor-call amplitudes measured between pairs of frogs. At playback amplitudes corresponding to the minimum neighbor-call amplitudes observed in choruses, frogs gave predominantly advertisement calls and few aggressive-encounter calls in response. As the playback amplitude was increased, subjects progressively decreased the number of advertisement calls and increased the number of encounter calls that they produced in response. The total number of calls (advertisement + encounter) given in response did not vary with playback amplitude. Intruders were likely to move away when a resident male gave encounter calls. In this way neighbor-call amplitude regulates intermale spacing in choruses.  相似文献

Using horizontal starch gel electrophoresis, ten enzyme systems were surveyed in ten populations of Tetramesa reared from eight species of grass collected from different sites in Britain. Eight species of Tetramesa were recognized on the basis of the number and relative mobilities of electromorph bands for larvae, pupae and adults. No differences were found between populations of T. hyalipennis (Walk.) reared from Elymus repens (L.) and E.farctus (Viv.) or between populations of T. eximia (Gir.) reared from Calamagrostis epigejos (L.) Roth and Ammophila arenaria (L.) Link. Experiments on mate-choice and host preference also supported the electrophoretic results for populations of T. hyalipennis and T. eximia.  相似文献

Genetic variants of the oligochaete Tubifex tubifex were identified with enzyme electrophoresis and subsequently reared in laboratory cultures. Three types are abundant in field populations. Individuals that show homozygotic bands of glucosephosphate-isomerase (GPI) 22 together with isocitrate-dehydrogenase (IDH) 35 were labeled Type A. Type B is characterized by GPI 23 together with IDH 11 and Type C is characterized by GPI 11 with either IDH 34 or IDH 33. Initial results on freshweights of adults and cocoon production revealed differences between the two main types, A and B. In the same period, Type B reached higher weights and produced five times as many cocoons as Type A, whereas number of eggs per cocoon were not different between these Types. Type B also had the lowest mortality in 16-week experiments with changing temperatures.  相似文献

Variation in the level of polyandry of females produces a difference in the risk of sperm competition among males. As a consequence, investment in ejaculate expenditure by males should vary. We compared the number of sperm ejaculated by males into the female reproductive organ of six strains of the adzuki bean beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), when males were reared at different larval densities in a bean. A significant positive correlation was found between the remating frequency of females and the ratio of the ejaculate sizes of high-density and low-density males as a measure of the response to the risk of sperm competition among males. The measure was estimated by dividing the number of sperm ejaculated by males reared at high larval density in a bean with the number of sperm ejaculated by males reared alone. The number of sperm transferred by a male to a female was not correlated with the duration of copulation. The results suggest an evolutionary relationship between ejaculatory expenditure and the level of polyandry in C. chinensis.  相似文献

Larvae of Tropisternus lateralis nimbatus (SAY) were reared in the laboratory using different feeding regimes. Controls were fed as many mosquito larvae as they would readily eat until the later larval stages. Experimental groups were reared on a reduced number of larvae per day. As a result of the increased potential for disease transmission, insects are predicted to show an increased constitutive immunity when crowded. Cannibalistic aggressive interactions further increase the risk of wounding and pathogen transmission in crowds. Nymphal Mormon crickets Anabrus simplex Haldeman were collected in Montana and reared in the laboratory either solitarily or at densities similar to that experienced by Mormon crickets in migratory bands. As teneral adults, solitarily-reared Mormon crickets tended to have greater phenoloxidase activity than those reared in groups. Sampling enzyme activity a second time when the adults were nearing reproductive maturity, group-reared Mormon crickets had elevated levels of prophenoloxidase and encapsulated foreign objects faster than solitarily-reared insects. Rearing density did not have a significant effect on either the darkness of the cuticle or antibacterial activity. This is the first report of age-related responses of adult insect immunity to crowding.  相似文献

Analysis of proteins of the banana and citrus race of Radopholus similis was carried out by several different types of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. These included standard slab gel, SDS slab gel, gradient slab gel, and two-ditnensional slab gel electrophoresis. A major band difference was detected between the two races by slab gel electrophoresis. However, several other poorly resolved but consistent hands of high molecular weight proteins near the gel origin also were considered as diagnostic. Resolution of protein bands was greatly improved by SDS and gradient slab gel electrophoresis, but no differences could be detected among the proteins resolved between the two rares with these techniques. Two-dimensional gels revealed a large number of proteins, but background staining obscured them hindering interpretation. When nematode races were reared on three different host plants, no differences in protein patterns were detected between them, indicating host preferences does not play a role in determining the types proteins occurring in these nematodes.  相似文献

Skeletochronological estimation of age, longevity, age at sexual maturity and breeding of Microhyla ornata was done. Frogs (n=62) were collected locally in August (rainy season) 1997 and brought to the laboratory. Body mass and snout-vent-length (SVL) of each frog was recorded; the 4th toe of both the hind limbs was clipped under anaesthesia, fixed in 10% formalin, demineralized in 5% nitric acid and processed for histology. Limb bones (femur, humerus, tibiofibula and radioulna) of 6 large sized frogs were also processed for skeletochronology in order to study the rate of resorption. Gonads of 25 frogs (belonging to different body size ranges) were processed for histology in order to ascertain the gametogenic status of individual frogs. One to four growth rings consisting of growth zones and lines of arrested growth (LAGs) were noticed in frogs of different body sizes; the number of LAGs remained identical in all the limb bones and phalanges in 5 out of 6 frogs. Back calculation indicated that the resorption rate is very low in this frog. Male frogs possessed sperm bundles in seminiferous tubules in the 1st year, while females showed yolky follicles in the ovary in the 2nd year. Frogs found in amplexus were 3 5 years old. The results suggest that this frog may live for a maximum of 5 years in the natural population.  相似文献

1. This paper presents cytological observations upon Dr. Loeb''s parthenogenetic frog material, with considerations upon the mechanism by which the diploid number and both sexes may be produced. 2. Both sexes of adults and tadpoles are present. 3. The chromosome number is diploid and probably 26 in both sexes. Sex chromosomes cannot be distinguished. 4. The chromosome numbers observed by other authors in parthenogenetic frog material are haploid, diploid, and variable. Their significance is considered. 5. The mechanism producing the diploid number, based on European observations, appears to be a doubling of the haploid number at some time after the second polar body is given off. 6. Overripeness may be a factor in producing both sexes of parthenogenetic frogs and tadpoles. 7. Genetic data indicate that the normal male is digametic and that there are differences of potency between male and female factors for sex which vary in frogs of the two races and in strains within the race. These differences have been interpreted by Witschi as forming a series of multiple allelomorphs.  相似文献

1. The tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, has been an important model system in insect biology for more than 50 years. In nature, M. sexta successfully utilises a range of host plants that vary in quality. The consequences of laboratory domestication and rearing on artificial diet for fitness of phytophagous insects on natural host plants have not been explored. 2. We examine the evolutionary divergence of two domesticated laboratory populations and a field population (separated for more than 40 years, or > 250 laboratory generations) of M. sexta with respect to performance and fitness on two natural host plants: a typical host plant, tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and a novel host plant, devil's claw (Proboscidea louisianica). 3. For both field and laboratory populations, rearing on devil's claw resulted in animals with lower survival, smaller final size, longer development time, and reduced size‐corrected fecundity than animals reared on tobacco. Reductions in some fitness components (survival and fecundity) were greater for the laboratory population animals than the field population animals. 4. When reared on tobacco, the laboratory population animals had similar or larger pupal masses and slightly shorter development times than when reared on artificial diet, suggesting that laboratory domestication on artificial diet has not greatly affected the ability of M. sexta to perform well on a typical natural host plant. 5. Although field and laboratory populations exhibited qualitatively similar responses to host‐plant quality, i.e. reduced performance on devil‘s claw, the magnitude of this reduction differed across populations, with the domesticated laboratory populations having greater reductions in performance than the field population. The use of domesticated populations as models for responses of field populations may therefore be more appropriate for considering environmental conditions that are relatively benign or near‐optimal, than when exploring responses to extreme or stressful conditions.  相似文献

We examined changes in the array of antennal sensilla of three species of Triatominae (Triatoma infestans, Rhodnius prolixus, and R. pallescens) following their establishment for different periods in laboratory culture. In each case, the laboratory colonies were compared with conspecific samples taken directly from the field, by quantitative analysis of the sensilla arrays on the three distal segments of the antenna in terms of the densities of three types of chemoreceptors (basiconics and thick and thin walled trichoids) and one type of mechanoreceptor (bristles). Sensilla densities were compared by ANOVA or non-parametric tests, and by multivariate discriminant analysis. Strains of the same species reared in different laboratories showed significant differences in their sensilla arrays, especially when compared to field-collected material from the same geographic origin. A Bolivian strain of T. infestans reared in the laboratory for 15 years and fed at monthly intervals, showed greatest differences from its conspecific wild forms, especially in terms of reductions in the number of chemoreceptors. By contrast, an Argentine strain of T. infestans reared for 25 years in the laboratory and fed weekly, showed a relative increase in the density of mechanoreceptors. A Colombian strain of R. prolixus reared for 20 years and fed weekly or fortnightly, showed only modest differences in the sensilla array when compared to its wild populations from the same area. However, a Colombian strain of R. pallescens reared for 12 years and fed fortnightly, did show highly significant reductions in one form of chemoreceptor compared to its conspecific wild populations. For all populations, multivariate analysis clearly discriminated between laboratory and field collected specimens, suggesting that artificial rearing can lead to modifications in the sensory array. This not only supports the idea of morphological plasticity in these species, but also suggests caution in the use of long-established laboratory material for experimental studies designed to extrapolate the natural behaviour and physiology of these species.  相似文献
