The Puerto Rican frog, Eleutherodactylus coqui has invaded Hawaii and reached densities far exceeding those in their native range. One possible explanation for the success of E. coqui in its introduced range is that it lost its co-evolved parasites in the process of the invasion. We compared the parasites of E. coqui in its native versus introduced range. We collected parasite data on 160 individual coqui frogs collected during January-April 2006 from eight populations in Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Puerto Rican coqui frogs had higher species richness of parasites than Hawaiian coqui frogs. Parasite prevalence and intensity were significantly higher in Hawaii, however this was likely a product of the life history of the dominant parasite and its minimal harm to the host. This suggests that the scarcity of parasites may be a factor contributing to the success of Eleutherodactylus coqui in Hawaii.  相似文献

Temperature affects nearly all biological processes, including acoustic signal production and reception. Here, we report on advertisement calls of the Puerto Rican coqui frog (Eleutherodactylus coqui) that were recorded along an altitudinal gradient and compared these with similar recordings along the same altitudinal gradient obtained 23 years earlier. We found that over this period, at any given elevation, calls exhibited both significant increases in pitch and shortening of their duration. All of the observed differences are consistent with a shift to higher elevations for the population, a well-known strategy for adapting to a rise in ambient temperature. Using independent temperature data over the same time period, we confirm a significant increase in temperature, the magnitude of which closely predicts the observed changes in the frogs’ calls. Physiological responses to long-term temperature rises include reduction in individual body size and concomitantly, population biomass. These can have potentially dire consequences, as coqui frogs form an integral component of the food web in the Puerto Rican rainforest.  相似文献

Water loss, cutaneous resistance, and the effects of dehydration on jumping ability were measured in two neotropical frogs, the common coquí (Eleutherodactylus coqui) and the cave coquí (Eleutherodactylus cooki). In both species jumping performance declined with an increase in water loss and a greater duration of exposure to dehydrating conditions. The arboreal species, E. coqui, had a slightly higher rate of water loss and lower cutaneous resistance than the non-arboreal species, E. cooki. However, differences in cutaneous resistance and water loss were too small to explain differences in geographic distributions of these species. In both species, a decline in boundary layer resistance contributed to an increased rate of water loss at higher temperature. Accepted: 4 January 1999  相似文献

Secondary forests constitute a growing portion of forested areas worldwide. They might have a substantial role for the conservation of biodiversity in tropical areas, but there is little information on their potential to support forest species and the recovery of faunal communities. We studied two forest frogs (Eleutherodactylus diastema and E. fitzingeri) in an area of Costa Rica composed of a mosaic of primary forest, young secondary forest and pasture, and we compared the density of calling males in areas with different forest alteration. Autoregressive models were used to compensate for potentially undesired effects of spatial autocorrelation and pseudoreplication. Both species were most abundant in riparian, primary forest. However, E. fitzingeri was also abundant in riparian secondary forests, and its density far from the river was similar in primary and secondary forest, suggesting that river proximity can influence the recovery of secondary forest for amphibians. Conversely, the density of E. diastema was similar in secondary forest and pasture, stressing interspecific differences for recovery rate. These frogs have a keystone role in nutrient cycling and food webs, and their prompt recovery might represent an important step for the functional recovery of forests. Nevertheless, the strong interspecific differences stress the complexity of these processes.  相似文献

Few studies of population structure and genetic diversity exist for frogs in the Amazon of South America, an area renowned for exceptionally high species richness. We isolated seven highly variable tetranucleotide microsatellite loci for the neotropical leaflitter frog, Eleutherodactylus ockendeni using an enrichment method. Three of the repeats are simple, three are compound and one is imperfect. We screened all loci with 175 individuals from one geographical area in the upper Napo of Ecuador and found high polymorphism in all loci (> 14 alleles/locus). These markers are suitable for population genetics studies of E. ockendeni and perhaps other leaflitter frogs of the same genus.  相似文献

The role of chemical fingerprinting: application to Ephedra   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Ephedra sinica, known as Ma Huang, is one of the oldest medicinal herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Preparations, namely teas, of E. sinica have been used for over 5000 years as a stimulant and as an antiasthmatic. In the West, extracts of E. sinica, E. intermedia or E. equisetina are most commonly used in dietary supplements as a stimulant and to promote weight loss. More than 50 species of Ephedra are native to both hemispheres, but the detection of ephedrine alkaloids has been limited to species in Eurasia. Currently, methods exist to quantitate the ephedrine alkaloids in extracts of plant material or dietary supplements, but the methods are not able to verify the extract is of an Ephedra species. Reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection was applied for the chemical fingerprinting of the Ephedra species. Two regions of comparison were determined in the chromatograms at 320 nm. The series of peaks between 52 and 64 min confirms an Ephedra species is being analyzed. The aforementioned peaks also could distinguish between Ephedra species from Eurasia, North America and South America. Peaks at ca. 57 and 59 min were isolated and determined to be two new compounds, 4-(2-eicosyloxycarbonyl-vinyl)-benzoic acid and 4-(2-docosyloxycarbonyl-vinyl)-benzoic acid respectively. Authentication of ground plant material as Ephedra can be achieved by this chemical fingerprinting method.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to use the Comet assay to assess genetic damage in the direct-developing frog Eleutherodactylus johnstonei. A DNA diffusion assay was used to evaluate the effectiveness of alkaline, enzymatic and alkaline/enzymatic treatments for lysing E. johnstonei blood cells and to determine the amount of DNA strand breakage associated with apoptosis and necrosis. Cell sensitivity to the mutagens bleomycin (BLM) and 4-nitro-quinoline-1-oxide (4NQO) was also assessed using the Comet assay, as was the assay reproducibility. Alkaline treatment did not lyse the cytoplasmic and nuclear membranes of E. johnstonei blood cells, whereas enzymatic digestion with proteinase K (40 μg/mL) yielded naked nuclei. The contribution of apoptosis and necrosis (assessed by the DNA diffusion assay) to DNA damage was estimated to range from 0% to 8%. BLM and 4NQO induced DNA damage in E. johnstonei blood cells at different concentrations and exposure times. Dose-effect curves with both mutagens were highly reproducible and showed consistently low coefficients of variation (CV ≤ 10%). The results are discussed with regard to the potential use of the modified Comet assay for assessing the exposure of E. johnstonei to herbicides in ecotoxicological studies.  相似文献

A variety of alkaloids, most of which occur or are structurally related to alkaloids that occur in skin glands of dendrobatid poison frogs, were assayed for antimicrobial activity against the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis, the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli and the fungus Candida albicans. Certain pyrrolidines, piperidines and decahydroquinolines, perhydro-histrionicotoxin, and a synthetic pumiliotoxin were active against B. subtilis. Only 2-n-nonylpiperidine was active against E. coli. One pyrrolidine, two piperidines, two decahydroquinolines, and the synthetic pumiliotoxin were active against the fungus C. albicans. The results suggest that certain of the skin alkaloids of poison frogs, in addition to being noxious to predators, may also benefit the frog through protection against skin infections.  相似文献

The direct-developing frog, Eleutherodactylus coqui, has eliminated the tadpole stage from its ontogeny, and lacks many larval characters. We demonstrate that the dermal folds of E. coqui are homologous with the opercular folds of metamorphosing frogs. In both E. coqui and its metamorphic counterparts the opercular folds grow over the developing forelimb before perforating to free the entrapped limb. Opercular perforation in E. coqui occurs even in the absence of the forelimb but shows no signs of thyroid hormone dependence. The condensation of E. coqui development appears due to the excision of the extended larval period of developmental stasis. Analysis of opercular development, when viewed in conjunction with other developmental characters, suggests the ontogenetic period in the ancestral Eleutherodactylus life-history from which the tadpole was likely eliminated. Arginine vasotocin (AVT) is a neuropeptide that modulates social behavior in amphibians and activates calling in frogs. The Puerto Rican coqui frog, Eleutherodactylus coqui, is a terrestrial anuran that exhibits complex social behaviors, including territoriality and paternal care. Males have a distinctive social hierarchy and can be any of the following: satellite (non-calling), territorial (calling), or paternal (guards and broods embryos). Field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of AVT on satellite behavior and the male social hierarchy of E. coqui. Satellite males were captured within the territory held by a resident male, given injections (i.p.) of AVT or saline (control) and placed back in their original location. To determine if AVT affects all males, not merely satellite males, territorial (calling) males were injected with AVT. Significantly more satellite males commenced advertisement calling following AVT injections than did control males injected with saline. AVT-activated satellites did not challenge the resident territorial male for possession of the territory but instead moved into a new area before commencing to call. In fact, AVT-activated satellite males were significantly more likely to move into a new territory following AVT injections than AVT-injected territorial males. The effect of AVT was short lived, lasting only one night in all but two cases. It is concluded that AVT stimulates advertisement calling and AVT-activated males displayed territorial characteristics of E. coqui.  相似文献

Purine-nucleoside phosphorylase expression as ascertained electrophoretically is discussed for seven species of Eleutherodactylus and one species of Leptodactylus frogs from Costa Rica. Eleutherodactylus angelicus, E. bransfordii, and E. podiciferus exhibit intraspecific variation unlike the samples of the other five species. In E. angelicus, heterozygotes form a four-banded pattern on starch gels consistent with a trimeric enzyme structure. Heterozygotes of E. bransfordii and E. podiciferus are characterized by a two-banded pattern as the heterotrimeric isozymes are apparently not expressed. Such differences in gene expression are discussed in terms of their potential phylogenetic and systematic application and significance.  相似文献

Two species of neotropical frog, Eleutherodactylus coqui and E. planirostris, have been introduced into the State of Hawaii via the horticulture trade. E. coqui was introduced prior to 1988 and E. planirostris was first reported in 1994. Since these dates frog colonies have rapidly spread accidentally and intentionally and frog abundance within colonies has grown rapidly. Although these frogs were originally restricted to horticulture sites, they are now found in residential areas, resorts and hotels, and public lands. Due to the high potential biomass of introduced frogs there are realistic anthropogenic and ecological concerns associated with the spread of these frogs. Though there currently is a tool that can be used for localized control of frogs in limited circumstances, overall efforts by Federal, State, and County agencies to control the frog in Hawaii have been hampered by limited authorities and funds, disbelief in the threat, and the reluctance to act.  相似文献

The taxonomic status of a very poorly known group of Andean frogs (the Eleutherodactylus discoidalis group) is assessed through acoustic and statistical analyses of differences in temporal parameters of advertisement calls, such as the number of pulses and the call duration, and also in a spectral parameter, dominant frequency. As these species are usually misidentified or ignored because of their taxonomic complexity in both ecological and biodiversity studies, we provide a bioacoustical diagnosis for each species in order to facilitate identification in the field. Differences in acoustic parameters support the specific status of Eleutherodactylus cruralis , E. discoidalis , Eleutherodactylus ibischi , and Eleutherodactylus madidi . The name E. cruralis is probably applied to three different species: the nominal form from Amazonian forests of the Andean slopes and adjacent lowlands, and two cryptic species restricted to inter-Andean dry valleys and cloud forests from central Bolivia. Moreover, the distribution of energy through the call and the aggregation of pulses seem to be useful meristic characters for detecting interspecific differences. Populations from each macrohabitat can be recognized by distinctive advertisement calls, usually corresponding to a recognized species. For the whole group, pulse rate is significantly correlated to latitude, which could indicate a speciation process along the Andes in relation to habitat changes and isolation. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 152 , 353–365.  相似文献

Johnstone's Whistling Frog, Eleutherodactylus johnstonei, is a highly successful colonizer that has become widely distributed throughout the Caribbean region. It has been introduced both purposefully and unintentionally by humans, and it continues to expand its range locally and regionally. Its current distribution and recent expansion do not support the hypothesis that E. johnstonei is expanding into new habitats exclusively by outcompeting native species. Instead, its range expansion progresses mainly parallel to human expansion (habitat disturbance through land development) and extreme climatic events (habitat disturbance through hurricanes and volcanism). Once a habitat has been disturbed and E. johnstonei has arrived, any previously existing endemic Eleutherodactylus species tend not to be found again at their previous ranges or population densities. The most probable explanation for this is that the broader physiological tolerance of the ecological generalist E. johnstonei allows it to become permanently established in a disturbed biota, whereas ecologically specialized endemics are prevented from recolonizing such habitats. Invasion of E. johnstonei can result in a parapatric distribution with endemics (e.g. E. euphronides, E. shrevei) or in sympatry (e.g. E. martinicensis), and habitats include areas with widely divergent climatic conditions (e.g. xeric: Anguilla, Barbuda; mesic: Grenada, St Vincent). Management for this species includes prevention of further or repeat introductions, close monitoring of ranges, and preservation of native habitats to ensure survival of local endemics.  相似文献

Summary The response to simultaneous temperature and dehydration stress was examined in three species of Puerto Rican frogs.Eleutherodactylus antillensis is found primarily in hot, arid grasslands at low altitudes.Eleutherodactylus portoricensis is restricted to cool, forested montane habitats above 300 m.Eleutherodactylus coqui occurs in both the lowlands and the highlands. The physiological tolerance of the frogs to temperature was measured at 20, 25, and 30°C at various levels of dehydration using an index derived from jumping performance. Although jump distance of fully hydratedE. antillensis was unaffected by temperature, this species tolerated significantly more dehydration at high temperatures than low.Eleutherodactylus portoricensis died at 30°C, but in this species both distance jumped and dehydration tolerance were unaffected by lower temperatures. Distance jumped byE. coqui increased with increasing temperature, but tolerance of dehydration remained unchanged.Eleutherodactylus coqui was less tolerant of high temperatures thanE. antillensis but more tolerant thanE. portoricensis.Abbreviations DT dehydration tolerance - SVL snout vent length  相似文献

Defensive mechanisms, including noxious or toxic substances, are favored by predation-driven natural selection. The acquisition of noxious/toxic substances can be either endogenous, in which the substances are produced by the organism, or exogenous, in which the substances are produced by another organism and are sequestered. Evidence indicates that the defensive skin alkaloids of Neotropical poison frogs (Dendrobatidae) have an exogenous source: a diet of ants and other small alkaloid-containing arthropods, which we term the diet-toxicity hypothesis. A critical prediction of the diet-toxicity hypothesis is that independent origins of dietary specialization will be found to be correlated with independent origins of skin alkaloids. We tested this prediction in an integrated framework using comparative methods with new and published data on feeding ecology and chemical defense for 15 species of dendrobatids in five genera. We found a significant correlation between alkaloid profiles and degree of dietary specialization. This reveals a recurring association of dietary specialization and alkaloid sequestration in dendrobatids, which suggests parallel evolutionary trends in the origins of defensive mechanisms.  相似文献

A frog endemic to Puerto Rico, Eleutherodactylus coqui, invaded Hawaii in the late 1980s, where it can reach densities of 50,000 individuals ha−1. Effects of this introduced insectivore on invertebrate communities and ecosystem processes, such as nutrient cycling, are largely unknown. In two study sites on the Island of Hawaii, we studied the top-down effects of E. coqui on aerial, herbivorous, and leaf litter invertebrates; herbivory, plant growth, and leaf litter decomposition rates; and leaf litter and throughfall chemistry over 6 months. We found that E. coqui reduced all invertebrate communities at one of the two study sites. Across sites, E. coqui lowered herbivory rates, increased NH4+ and P concentrations in throughfall, increased Mg, N, P, and K in decomposing leaf litter, increased new leaf production of Psidium cattleianum, and increased leaf litter decomposition rates of Metrosideros polymorpha. In summary, E. coqui effects on invertebrates differed by site, but E. coqui effects on ecosystem processes were similar across sites. Path analyses suggest that E. coqui increased the number of new P. cattleianum leaves and leaf litter decomposition rates of M. polymorpha by making nutrients more available to plants and microbes rather than through changes in the invertebrate community. Results suggest that E. coqui in Hawaii has the potential to reduce endemic invertebrates and increase nutrient cycling rates, which may confer a competitive advantage to invasive plants in an ecosystem where native species have evolved in nutrient-poor conditions.  相似文献

Molecular genetic data were used to investigate population sizes and ages of Eleutherodactylus (Anura: Leptodactylidae), a species-rich group of small leaf-litter frogs endemic to Central America. Population genetic structure and divergence was investigated for four closely related species surveyed across nine localities in Costa Rica and Panama. DNA sequence data were collected from a mitochondrial gene (ND2) and a nuclear gene (c-myc). Phylogenetic analyses yielded concordant results between loci, with reciprocal monophyly of mitochondrial DNA haplotypes for all species and of c-myc haplotypes for three of the four species. Estimates of genetic differentiation among populations (FST) based upon mitochondrial data were always higher than nuclear-based FST estimates, even after correcting for the expected fourfold lower effective population size (Ne) of the mitochondrial genome. Comparing within-population variation and the relative mutation rates of the two genes revealed that the Ne of the mitochondrial genome was 15-fold lower than the estimate of the nuclear genome based on c-myc. Nuclear FST estimates were approximately 0 for the most proximal pairs of populations, but ranged from 0.5 to 1.0 for all other pairs, even within the same nominal species. The nuclear locus yielded estimates of Ne within localities on the order of 105. This value is two to three orders of magnitude larger than any previous Ne estimate from frogs, but is nonetheless consistent with published demographic data. Applying a molecular clock model suggested that morphologically indistinguishable populations within one species may be 107 years old. These results demonstrate that even a geologically young and dynamic region of the tropics can support very old lineages that harbour great levels of genetic diversity within populations. The association of high nucleotide diversity within populations, large divergence between populations, and high species diversity is also discussed in light of neutral community models.  相似文献

Insecticidal sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloids from Euonymus species   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Three insecticidal sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloids with a beta-dihydroagarofuran sesquiterpene skeleton, euoverrine A (1), B (2), and euophelline (3), and a known compound, euojaponine C (4), were isolated from the root bark of Euonymus verrucosides, E. fortunei and E. phellomana by bioassay-guided fractionation. Their chemical structures were elucidated mainly by analyses NMR and MS spectral data.  相似文献
