Limitations of carbon fixation within spinach leaves due to light and CO2 were investigated. Under equivalent photon fluxes, carbon fixation was higher when leaves were irradiated adaxially compared to abaxially. Maximal carbon fixation occurred in the middle of the palisade mesophyll under adaxial illumination, whereas, maximal carbon fixation occurred in the spongy mesophyll under abaxial illumination. Total carbon fixation and the pattern of carbon fixation across leaves were similar, when leaves were irradiated with 800 micromol quanta m(-2) s(-1) either adaxially alone or adaxially plus abaxially (1,600 micromol quanta m(-2) s(-1)). In contrast, when both leaf surfaces were irradiated simultaneously with 200 micromol quanta m(-2) s(-1), total carbon fixation increased and carbon fixation in the middle of the leaf was higher compared to leaves irradiated unilaterally with the low light. Feeding 14CO2 through either the adaxial or abaxial leaf surface did not change the pattern of carbon fixation across the leaf. Increasing 14CO2 pulse-feeding times from 5 s to 60 s allowed more 14CO2 to be fixed but did not change the pattern of 14CO2 fixation across the leaf. We concluded that in spinach, the distribution of both light and Rubisco activity within leaves has significant effects on the patterns of carbon fixation across leaves; whereas CO2 diffusion does not appear to affect the carbon fixation pattern within spinach leaves.  相似文献

Mesophyll structure has been associated with the photosynthetic performance of leaves via the regulation of internal light and CO(2) profiles. Differences in mesophyll structure and chlorophyll distribution within three ontogenetically different leaf types of Eucalyptus globulus ssp. globulus were investigated. Juvenile leaves are blue-grey in color, dorsiventral (adaxial palisade layer only), hypostomatous, and approximately horizontal in orientation. In contrast, adult leaves are dark green in color, isobilateral (adaxial and abaxial palisade), amphistomatous, and nearly vertical in orientation. The transitional leaf type has structural features that appear intermediate between the juvenile and adult leaves. The ratio of mesophyll cell surface area per unit leaf surface area (A(mes)/A) of juvenile leaves was maximum at the base of a single, adaxial palisade layer and declined through the spongy mesophyll. Chlorophyll a + b content showed a coincident pattern, while the chlorophyll a:b ratio declined linearly from the adaxial to abaxial epidermis. In comparison, the mesophyll of adult leaves had a bimodal distribution of A(mes)/A, with maxima occurring beneath both the adaxial and abaxial surfaces within the first layer of multiple palisade layers. The distribution of chlorophyll a + b content had a similar pattern, although the maximum ratio of chlorophyll a:b occurred immediately beneath the adaxial and abaxial epidermis. The matching distributions of A(mes)/A and chlorophyll provide further evidence that mesophyll structure may act to influence photosynthetic performance. These changes in internal leaf structure at different life stages of E. globulus may be an adaptation for increased xeromorphy under increasing light exposure experienced from the seedling to adult tree, similar to the characteristics reported for different species according to sunlight exposure and water availability within their native habitats.  相似文献

The localization of the key photoreductive and oxidative processes and some stress-protective reactions within leaves of mesophytic C3 plants were investigated. The role of light in determining the profile of Rubisco, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, catalase, fumarase, and cytochrome-c-oxidase across spinach leaves was examined by exposing leaves to illumination on either the adaxial or abaxial leaf surfaces. Oxygen evolution in fresh paradermal leaf sections and CO2 gas exchange in whole leaves under adaxial or abaxial illumination was also examined. The results showed that the palisade mesophyll is responsible for the midday depression of photosynthesis in spinach leaves. The photosynthetic apparatus was more sensitive to the light environment than the respiratory apparatus. Additionally, examination of the paradermal leaf sections by optical microscopy allowed us to describe two new types of parenchyma in spinach—pirum mesophyll and pillow spongy mesophyll. A hypothesis that oxaloacetate may protect the upper leaf tissue from the destructive influence of active oxygen is presented. The application of mathematical modeling shows that the pattern of enzymatic distribution across leaves abides by the principle of maximal ecological utility. Light regulation of carbon metabolism across leaves is discussed.  相似文献

The azimuth of vertical leaves of Silphium terebinthinaceum profoundly influenced total daily irradiance as well as the proportion of direct versus diffuse light incident on the adaxial and abaxial leaf surface. These differences caused structural and physiological adjustments in leaves that affected photosynthetic performance. Leaves with the adaxial surface facing East received equal daily integrated irradiance on each surface, and these leaves had similar photosynthetic rates when irradiated on either the adaxial or abaxial surface. The adaxial surface of East-facing leaves was also the only surface to receive more direct than diffuse irradiance and this was the only leaf side which had a clearly defined columnar palisade layer. A potential cost of constructing East-facing leaves with symmetrical photosynthetic capcity was a 25% higher specific leaf mass and increased leaf thickness in comparison to asymmetrical South-facing leaves. The adaxial surface of South-facing leaves received approximately three times more daily integrated irradiance than the abaxial surface. When measured at saturating CO2 and irradiance, these leaves had 42% higher photosynthetic rates when irradiated on the adaxial surface than when irradiated on the abaxial surface. However, there was no difference in photosynthesis for these leaves when irradiated on either surface when measurements were made at ambient CO2. Stomatal distribution (mean adaxial/abaxial stomatal density = 0.61) was unaffected by leaf orientation. Thus, the potential for high photosynthetic rates of adaxial palisade cells in South-facing leaves at ambient CO2 concentrations may have been constrained by stomatal limitations to gas exchange. The distribution of soluble protein and chlorophyll within leaves suggests that palisade and spongy mesophyll cells acclimated to their local light environment. The protein/chlorophyll ratio was high in the palisade layers and decreased in the spongy mesophyll cells, presumably corresponding to the attentuation of light as it penetrates leaves. Unlike some species, the chlorophyll a/b ratio and the degree of thylakoid stacking was uniform throughout the thickness of the leaf. It appears that sun-shade acclimation among cell layers of Silphium terebinthinaceum leaves is accomplished without adjustment to the chlorophyll a/b ratio or to thylakoid membrane structure.  相似文献

Abstract. In Oxalis , epidermal cells on both the adaxial and abaxial surface of the leaf concentrated light within the leaf by a lens mechanism. Focal lengths of epidermal cells were estimated using two methods: they were calculated from radius of curvature measurements taken from individual epidermal cells, and were measured directly in agarose replicas of the leaf surface. In the three species of Oxalis examined, light that was incident upon the adaxial leaf surface was concentrated within the palisade, whereas light that was incident upon the abaxial leaf surface was concentrated within the spongy mesophyll. Using sensiometric analysis, theoretically maximal focal intesifications were measured in leaf replicas at the focal maximum and at intermediate positions corresponding to the mid-region of the palisade and spongy mesophyll tissues. Focal intensifications ranged from 2.2 to 10.4 times incident light at the focal maximum, and 1.3 to 4.5 in the palisade or spongy mesophyll layers. Elimination of epidermal focussing, by covering the leaf surface with a thin layer of mineral oil, strongly affected chlorophyll fluorescence induction curves resulting in a decrease of 10–40% in the initial (F0) and variable fluorescence (Fv). These results are consistent with the interpretation that the chloroplasts were adapted to their light microenvironment within the leaf and that focussing by the epidermis channelled light to a population of chloroplasts that were adapted to high light.  相似文献

The existence of major vertical gradients within the leaf is often overlooked in studies of photosynthesis. These gradients, which involve light heterogeneity, cell composition, and CO2 concentration across the mesophyll, can generate differences in the maximum potential PSII efficiency (F V/F M or F V/F P) of the different cell layers. Evidence is presented for a step gradient of F V/F P ratios across the mesophyll, from the adaxial (palisade parenchyma, optimal efficiencies) to the abaxial (spongy parenchyma, sub-optimal efficiencies) side of Quercus coccifera leaves. For this purpose, light sources with different wavelengths that penetrate more or less deep within the leaf were employed, and measurements from the adaxial and abaxial sides were performed. To our knowledge, this is the first report where a low photosynthetic performance in the abaxial side of leaves is accompanied by impaired F V/F P ratios. This low photosynthetic efficiency of the abaxial side could be related to the occurrence of bundle sheath extensions, which facilitates the penetration of high light intensities deep within the mesophyll. Also, leaf morphology (twisted in shape) and orientation (with a marked angle from the horizontal plane) imply direct sunlight illumination of the abaxial side. The existence of cell layers within leaves with different photosynthetic efficiencies makes appropriate the evaluation of how light penetrates within the mesophyll when using Chl fluorescence or gas exchange techniques that use different wavelengths for excitation and/or for driving photosynthesis.  相似文献

Initiation and growth of leaf blades is oriented by an adaxial/abaxial axis aligned with the original axis of polarity in the leaf primordium. To investigate mechanisms regulating this process, we cloned the Nicotiana tabacum ortholog of PHANTASTICA (NTPHAN) and generated a series of antisense transgenics in N. sylvestris. We show that NSPHAN is expressed throughout emerging blade primordia in the wild type and becomes localized to the middle mesophyll in the expanding lamina. Antisense NSPHAN leaves show ectopic expression of NTH20, a class I KNOX gene. Juvenile transgenic leaves have normal adaxial/abaxial polarity and generate leaf blades in the normal position, but the adaxial mesophyll shows disorganized patterns of cell division, delayed maturation of palisade, and ectopic reinitiation of blade primordia along the midrib. Reversal of the phenotype with exogenous gibberellic acid suggests that NSPHAN, acting via KNOX repression, maintains determinacy in the expanding lamina and sustains the patterns of cell proliferation critical to palisade development.  相似文献

A model to evaluate photon transport within leaves and the implications for photosynthesis are investigated. A ray tracing model, Raytran, was used to produce absorption profiles within a virtual dorsiventral plant leaf oriented in two positions (horizontal/vertical) and illuminated on one of its two faces (adaxial/abaxial). Together with chlorophyll profiles, these absorption profiles feed a simple photosynthesis model that calculates the gross photosynthetic rate as a function of the incident irradiance. The differences observed between the four conditions are consistent with the literature: horizontal‐adaxial leaves, which are commonly found in natural conditions, have the greatest light use efficiency. The absorption profile obtained with horizontal‐abaxial leaves lies below this, but above those obtained for vertical leaves. The latter present similar gross photosynthetic rates when irradiated on either the adaxial or abaxial surfaces. Vertical profiles of photosynthetic rates across the leaf confirm that carbon fixation occurs mainly in the palisade parenchyma, that the leaf anatomy is integral to its function and that leaves cannot be considered as a single homogeneous unit. Finally, the relationships between leaf structure, orientation and photosynthesis are discussed.  相似文献

Using a laboratory-constructed system that can measure the gas exchange rates of two leaf surfaces separately, the light responses of the adaxial and abaxial stomata in intact leaves of sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.) were investigated, keeping the intercellular CO2 concentration ( C i) at 300  µ L L−1. When evenly illuminating both sides of the leaf, the stomatal conductance ( g s) of the abaxial surface was higher than that of the adaxial surface at any light intensity. When each surface of the leaf was illuminated separately, both the adaxial and abaxial stomata were more sensitive to the light transmitted through the leaf (self-transmitted light) than to direct illumination. Relationships between the whole leaf photosynthetic rate ( A n) and the g s for each side highlighted a strong dependence of stomatal opening on mesophyll photosynthesis. Light transmitted through another leaf was more effective than the direct white light for the abaxial stomata, but not for the adaxial stomata. Moreover, green monochromatic light induced an opening of the abaxial stomata, but not of the adaxial stomata. As the proportion of blue light in the transmitted light is less than that in the white light, there may be some uncharacterized light responses, which are responsible for the opening of the abaxial stomata by the transmitted, green light.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sections leaves of Ficus rubiginosa 'Variegata' show that it is a chimera with a chlorophyll deficiency in the second layer of the leaf meristem (GWG structure). Like other Ficus species, it has a multiseriate epidermis on the adaxial and abaxial sides of the leaf, formed by periclinal cell divisions as well as anticlinal divisions. The upper and lower laminae of the leaf often exhibit small dark and light green patches of tissue overlying internal leaf tissue. METHODS: The distribution of chlorophyll in transverse sections of typical leaves was determined by fluorescence microscopy. KEY RESULTS: Patches of dark and light green tissue which arise in the otherwise colourless palisade and spongy mesophyll tissue in the entire leaf are due to further cell divisions arising from the bundle sheath which is associated with major vascular bundles or from the green multiseriate epidermis. Leaves produced in winter exhibit more patches of green tissue than leaves which expand in mid-summer. Many leaves produced in summer have no spotting and appear like a typical GWG chimera. There is a strong relationship between the number of patches on the adaxial side of leaves and the number on the abaxial side, showing that the cell division in upper and lower layers of leaves is strongly coordinated. In both winter and summer, there are fewer patches on the abaxial side of leaves compared with the adaxial side, indicating that periclinal and anticlinal cell divisions from the outer meristematic layer are less frequent in the lower layers of leaf tissue. Most of the patches are small (<1 mm in longest dimension) and thus the cell divisions which form them occur late in leaf development. Leaves which exhibit large patches generally have them on both sides of the leaves. CONCLUSION: In this cultivar, the outer meristematic layer appears to form vascular bundle sheaths and associated internal leaf tissue in the entire leaf lamina.  相似文献

Thuja plicata and Platycladus orientalis initially produce only bifacial needle leaves. When the first lateral shoots develop, the leaf morphology and anatomy changes dramatically. Subsequently, only greatly reduced, bifacial scale leaves are developed. A new kind of “superimposed bifaciality” occurs with the change from juvenile needle leaves to mature scale leaves. Anatomical dorsiventrality affects not only the individual leaf, but also the complete plagiotropic lateral shoots of Thuja, which have a sun- and shade-exposed side. The upper light-exposed median leaves show adaxial leaf anatomy, contrary to the lower shaded median leaves showing abaxial leaf anatomy. Due to their mixed exposure, the lateral leaves show a lateral differentiation. At vertical lateral shoots of Platycladus, a predominant light-exposed side is absent. Thus, the anatomical dorsiventrality does not affect the complete shoot. Here the morphological abaxial side of a scale leaf becomes functionally and physiologically adaxial by reorientation of the palisade parenchyma and stomata. In juvenile needle leaves, the palisade parenchyma is located adaxial, with the majority of stomata being located abaxial. Conversely, in mature scale leaves, the palisade parenchyma is abaxial and the majority of stomata are adaxial.  相似文献

Although anthocyanin coloration in lower (abaxial) leaf cells has been documented for numerous species, the functional significance of this character has not been comprehensively investigated according to habitat or leaf orientation. Here, we demonstrate that abaxial anthocyanin may function as a photoprotectant, similarly to its purported role in upper (adaxial) cells, in leaves vulnerable to high irradiance incident on abaxial surfaces. Spectral scans were derived for Galax urceolata leaves with the following phenotypes: abaxial or adaxial anthocyanin only, abaxial and adaxial anthocyanin, and no anthocyanin. To determine whether anthocyanins conferred protection from photoinhibition, maximum photosystem II efficiencies of red (anthocyanic) and green (acyanic) surfaces were compared during and after exposure to photoinhibitory conditions. Leaves were either positioned with their adaxial surfaces facing the light source or inverted to expose abaxial surfaces. Spectral scans showed increased absorptance of 500-600 nm wavelengths by red surfaces (consistent with the absorbance spectrum of anthocyanin), regardless of whether that surface was abaxial or adaxial. Leaves with anthocyanin in either illuminated surface were also photoinhibited less than leaves lacking anthocyanin in that surface. These results suggest that anthocyanic layers reduce absorbed sunlight in the mesophyll not only for adaxial surfaces, but also for the abaxial. Adaxial/abaxial anthocyanin plasticity may therefore be adaptive in high-light environments or during light-sensitive developmental stages where leaf orientation and/or substrate albedo are variable.  相似文献

Profiles of chlorophyll fluorescence were measured in spinach leaves irradiated with monochromatic light. The characteristics of the profiles within the mesophyll were determined by the optical properties of the leaf tissue and the spectral quality of the actinic light. When leaves were infiltrated with 10?4M DCMU [3‐(3,4‐dichlorophenyl)‐1, 1‐dimethyl‐urea] or water, treatments that minimized light scattering, irradiation with 2000 μmol m?2 s?1 green light produced broad Gaussian‐shaped fluorescence profiles that spanned most of the mesophyll. Profiles for chlorophyll fluorescence in the red (680 ± 16 nm) and far red (λ > 710 nm) were similar except that there was elevated red fluorescence near the adaxial leaf surface relative to far red fluorescence. Fluorescence profiles were narrower in non‐infiltrated leaf samples where light scattering increased the light gradient. The fluorescence profile was broader when the leaf was irradiated on its adaxial versus abaxial surface due to the contrasting optical properties of the palisade and spongy mesophyll. Irradiation with blue, red and green monochromatic light produced profiles that peaked 50, 100 and 150 μm, respectively, beneath the irradiated surface. These results are consistent with previous measurements of the light gradient in spinach and they agree qualitatively with measurements of carbon fixation under monochromatic blue, red and green light. These results suggest that chlorophyll fluorescence profiles may be used to estimate the distribution of quanta that are absorbed within the leaf for photosynthesis.  相似文献

We compared photosynthetic and UV-B-absorbing pigment concentrations, gas-exchange rates and photosystem II (PSII) electron transport rates in leaves of pea (Pisum sativum mutant Argenteum) grown without UV-B or under an enhanced UV-B treatment (18 kJ m?2 biologically effective daily dose) in a greenhouse. We also compared the distribution of chlorophyll by depth within leaves of each treatment by using image analysis of chlorophyll autofluorescence. Ultraviolet-B treatment elicited putative protective responses such as an 80% increase in UV-B-absorbing compound concentrations (leaf-area basis), and a slight increase in mesophyll thickness (178 in controls compared to 191 μm in UV-B-treated leaves). However, photosynthetic rates of UV-B-treated leaves were only 80% of those of controls. This was paralleled by reductions in leaf conductance to water vapor (50% of controls) and intercellular CO2 concentrations, suggesting that stomatal limitations were at least partly responsible for lower photosynthetic rates under the UV-B treatment. Total chlorophyll concentrations (leaf-area basis) in UV-B-treated leaves were only 70% of controls, and there was a shift in the relative distribution of chlorophyll with depth in UV-B-treated leaves. In control leaves chlorophyll concentrations were highest near the adaxial surface of the upper palisade, dropped with depth and then increased slightly in the bottom of the spongy mesophyll nearest the abaxial surface. In contrast, in UV-B-treated leaves chlorophyll concentrations were lowest at the adaxial surface of the upper palisade and increased with depth through the leaf. The most notable treatment difference in chlorophyll concentrations was in the upper palisade near the adaxial surface of leaves, where we estimate that chlorophyll concentrations in each 1-μm-thick paradermal layer were about 50% lower in UV-B-treated leaves than in controls. We found reduced electron transport capacity in UV-B-treated leaves, based on lower maximum fluorescence (Fm), variable to maximum fluorescence ratios (F,/Fm) and quantum yield of PSII electron transport (Y). However, the above were assessed from fluorometer measurements on the adaxial leaf surface and may reflect the markedly lower chlorophyll concentrations in the upper palisade of UV-B-treated leaves.  相似文献

Heteroblastic Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus L.) leaves were characterized for their functional diversity examining photosynthesis and photosynthesis limitations, transpiration, and the emission of isoprene and monoterpenes. In vivo and combined analyses of gas-exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, and light absorbance at 830 nm were made on the adaxial and abaxial sides of juvenile and adult leaves. When adult leaves were reversed to illuminate the abaxial side, photosynthesis and isoprene emission were significantly lower than when the adaxial side was illuminated. Monoterpene emission, however, was independent on the side illuminated and similarly partitioned between the two leaf sides. The abaxial side of adult leaves showed less diffusive resistance to CO(2) acquisition by chloroplasts, but also lower ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) activity, than the adaxial leaf side. In juvenile leaves, photosynthesis, isoprene, and monoterpene emissions were similar when the adaxial or abaxial side was directly illuminated. In the abaxial side of juvenile leaves, photosynthesis did not match the rates attained by the other leaf types when exposed to elevated CO(2), which suggests the occurrence of a limitation of photosynthesis by ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP) regeneration. Accordingly, a reduced efficiency of both photosystems and a high non-radiative dissipation of energy was observed in the abaxial side of juvenile leaves. During light induction, the adaxial side of juvenile leaves also showed a reduced efficiency of photosystem II and a large non-radiative energy dissipation. Our report reveals distinct functional properties in Eucalyptus leaves. Juvenile leaves invest more carbon in isoprene, but not in monoterpenes, and have a lower water use efficiency than adult leaves. Under steady-state conditions, in adult leaves the isobilateral anatomy does not correspond to an equal functionality of the two sides, while in juvenile leaves the dorsiventral anatomy does not result in functional differences in primary or secondary metabolism in the two sides. However, photochemical limitations may reduce the efficiency of carbon fixation in the light, especially in the abaxial side of juvenile leaves.  相似文献

The light microenvironment within leaves of Medicago sativa L. cv. Armor was related to the anatomy of the epidermis. Leaf epidermal cells had a convex shape and appeared to act as lenses that focussed light within the upper region of the palisade. In leaves irradiated with collimated light, epidermal focussing was demonstrated by ray tracing, photomicrography and fiber optic probe measurements, where lens signatures were observed. No relationship was observed between the location of focal spots within the palisade and chloroplast positioning. Epidermal focussing could be largely eliminated by irradiating leaves with diffuse light or by coating their surface with a thin layer of mineral oil that closely matched the refractive index of the cell walls. Measurement of variable chlorophyll fluorescence after elimination of epidermal focussing on the adaxial leaf surface caused a 19 and 11% decrease in the initial fluorescence level (F0) and maximum fluorescence (Fmax), respectively, whereas similar measurements from the abaxial surface were twice as large. These results suggest that some of the chloroplasts within the leaf may be adapted to local high-light conditions created by the epidermis.  相似文献

Light harvesting and utilization by chloroplasts located near the adaxial vs the abaxial surface of sun and shade leaves were examined by fluorometry in two herbaceous perennials that differed in their anatomy and leaf inclination. Leaves of Thermopsis montana had well-developed palisade and spongy mesophyll whereas the photosynthetic tissue of Smilacina stellata consisted of spongy mesophyll only. Leaf orientation depended upon the irradiance during leaf development. When grown under low-light levels, leaves of S. stellata and T. montana were nearly horizontal, whereas under high-light levels, S. stellata leaves and T. montana leaves were inclined 600 and 300, respectively. Leaf inclination increased the amount of light that was intercepted by the lower leaf surfaces and affected the photosynthetic properties of the chloroplasts located near the abaxial leaf surface. The slowest rates of quinone pool reduction and reoxidation were found in chloroplasts located near the adaxial leaf surface of T. montana plants grown under high light, indicating large quinone pools in these chloroplasts. Chloroplasts near the abaxial surface of low-light leaves had lower light utilization capacities as shown by photochemical quenching measurements. The amount of photosystem II (PSII) down regulation, measured from each leaf surface, was also found to be influenced by irradiance and leaf inclination. The greatest difference between down regulation monitored from the adaxial vs abaxial surfaces was found in plants with horizontal leaves. Different energy dissipation mechanisms may be employed by the two species. Values for down regulation in S. stellata were 2–3 times higher than those in T. montana, while the portion of the PSII population which was found to be QB nonreducing was 4–6 times lower in high light S. stellata leaves than in T. montana. All values of Stern-Volmer type nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) from S. stellata leaves were similar when quenching analysis was performed at actinic irradiances that were higher than the irradiance to which the leaf surface was exposed during growth. In contrast, with T. montana, NPQ values from the abaxial leaf surface were up to 45% higher than those from the adaxial leaf surface regardless of growth conditions. The observed differences in chloroplast properties between species and between the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces may depend upon a complex interaction among light, leaf anatomy and leaf inclination.  相似文献

Resurrection plants are unique among higher plants because of their ability to withstand long periods of dehydration without damages. In this study, leaf epidermis and palisade mesophyll of three resurrection species, Haberlea rodopensis, Ramonda serbica and Ramonda myconi, grown under full desiccation and benign conditions, were analyzed by differential interference contrast microscopy. Detailed investigation of adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces revealed species-specific differences in the size and number of epidermal cells and stomatal density. The applied full desiccation did not cause any significant deviations of these parameters from the controls. There were no changes in the size and number of mesophyll cells as well. Analysis of stomatal patterning displayed essentially hypostomatic leaves, having stomata mainly abaxially positioned. The most significant change detected in the leaves of dehydration-treated plants was the increased formation of adaxially positioned trichomes. This increase was very high in R. myconi, where the adaxial leaf surface was fully covered by trichomes. Despite the existence of small species-specific differences, the results showed uniform desiccation-related responses of the studied resurrection species. The quantified leaf epidermal and mesophyll features are discussed with respect to their possible contribution to the desiccation tolerance of resurrection species.  相似文献
