  1. The distribution of adults and immatures of two Tribolium castaneum strains in plexiglas towers was studied both in single-strain and in mixed cultures.
  2. The adults of the + + strain tended to be, on the average, deeper in the flour than the bb adults, in pure and in mixed cultures.
  3. Adult distribution was independent of sex.
  4. The correlation between adult and egg distribution was usually negative, due to either adult movement in the flour, or to reduced fecundity and increased cannibalism of eggs where adults were numerous, or both.
  5. Larvae, and especially pupae, of bb were more abundant in the upper sections, and + + in the lower sections, of towers, both in pure and in mixed cultures and, in particular, at the higher density.

In general, the distribution of the strains in the mixed cultures was very similar to the pure cultures, showing a very small effect of the interaction between the two strains, in comparison with GHENT’S results with two species. It seems that the two strains are very much alike in their ability to exploit their environment and therefore their success is the same (when pupal cannibalism is reduced) whether the biological component of the environment is composed of one or two strains.

Summary The guppy, Poecilia reticulata, is economically the most important species of freshwater ornamental fish cultured in Singapore. About 30 strains with different color patterns and fin shapes are reared in guppy farms practising monoculture in Singapore. To compare the growth rates of domesticated strains with different color patterns, newborn fry of 11 strains were obtained on the same day from a single farm in Singapore and were reared experimentally in the laboratory for about 100 days. Each strain was distributed randomly into 4 tanks with 30 fish/tank. Weekly weighings of 10 fish/tank were made from 17 to 100 days of age. Three strains were homozygous for the autosomal recessive blond gene which gives rise to a pale yellow background pigmentation (bb). These blond strains had significantly smaller body weights than corresponding ones with the same color pattern but with the wild-type grey-brown background coloration due to the dominant allele (BB). The strains with the red tail pattern due to a dominant X-linked gene (Rdt) had more rapid growth than those with other tail color patterns including the blue, black, green snakeskin and variegated. However, no significant differences were detected among the other color pattern strains. Thus among the strains studied, the blond strains were associated with slower growth while those with the red tail color were associated with faster growth.  相似文献

  • 1 The eggs of the cowpea seed bettle Callosobruchus maculatus (Fab.) are attached to cowpeas. On hatching, the larvae penetrate the testa and remain in the seed until development is complete and adult eclosion has occurred. The adults do not need to feed and were not allowed to do so.
  • 2 Strains from Brazil and Nigeria can produce more than twelve adults from a seed bearing numerous eggs, whereas a strain from the Yemen Republic rarely produced more than three.
  • 3 In all three strains the mean weight of the adults produced from a single cowpea declined with increasing initial larval density in the seed.
  • 4 Egg production by females is positively correlated with their weight at the time of mating, shortly after emergence.
  • 5 Lifetime egg production by females of the Brazilian and Nigerian strains was lower if they came from cowpeas with higher initial larval densities. No such relationship could be demonstrated in the Yemen strain.
  • 6 The fecundity of one generation of these beetles, at least in some geographical strains, is significantly affected by the number of larvae entering the hosts in which the adults of that generation have developed.

The reproductive patterns of two different age classes of Leptocarabus kumagaii adults, i.e. young beetles which were in the first year of adult stage and old ones which survived for more than two years, were studied in the field. The numbers of eggs laid were compared between young and old females and the effects of food quality and quantity were studied on egg production and maintenance in the laboratory.
  1. Both of the young and old beetles reproduced in the field population. The number of eggs laid did not significantly differ between the two.
  2. The number of eggs laid by female increased with an increase in the amount of miced beef eaten. Plant materials were ineffective for egg production but sufficient for the survival of both male and female beetles.
  3. The two life historical aspects, i.e. repeated reproduction and polyphagy were discussed in relation to environmental fluctuation and limitation of food resources.

(1) The genetics of malathion resistance in two strains of the flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, was investigated. In CTC-12, resistance is polygenic, while in Kano, it is due to a dominant allele at a single autosomal locus. Reciprocal hybrids with the susceptible control strains bb and pp showed an overdominant response in particular when Kano was the male parent in the original cross. (2) Three possible genetic mechanisms to explain these results are discussed. The model which best explains the genetic results, particularly the difference between the reciprocal crosses, assumes a modifier resistance allele on the Y chromosome. (3) The levels of activity of total esterases, carboxyesterases, mixed-function oxidases, epoxide hydrase, and glutathione transferase in the parent strains and their hybrids were measured quantitatively. Although total esterase activity may not be relevant for the breakdown of malathion, it was inhibited by the pesticide. The activity of the microsomal enzymes was high in CTC-12, low in bb, and intermediate in the hybrids, while carboxyesterases were very active in Kano as well as in the hybrids with bb and low in the latter. These patterns agree with the genetics of resistance in the two strains. A higher level of GSH transferase in the Kano×bb hybrids than in Kano seems to indicate a possible biochemical mechanism for their overdominant resistance.  相似文献

  • Polyploidy (the state of having more than two genome copies) is widely distributed in flowering plants and can vary within species, with polyploid races often associated with broad ecological tolerances. Polyploidy may influence within‐species variation in seed development, germination and establishment. We hypothesized that interactions between polyploidy and the seed developmental environment would affect subsequent dormancy, germination and early growth traits, particularly in stressful environments.
  • Using seeds developed in a common garden under ambient and warmed conditions, we conducted germination trials under drought and temperature stress, and monitored the subsequent growth of seedlings. The study species, Themeda triandra, is a widespread, keystone, Australian native grass and a known polyploid complex.
  • Tetraploid plants produced heavier, more viable seeds than diploids. Tetraploids were significantly more dormant than diploids, regardless of seed developmental environment. Non‐dormant tetraploids were more sensitive to germination stress compared to non‐dormant diploids. Finally, tetraploid seedlings were larger and grew faster than diploids, usually when maternal plants were exposed to developmental temperatures atypical to the source environment.
  • Seed and seedling traits suggest tetraploids are generally better adapted to stressful environments than diploids. Because tetraploid seeds of T. triandra are more dormant they are less likely to germinate under stress, and when they do germinate, seedling growth is rapid and independent of seed developmental environment. These novel results demonstrate that polyploidy, sometimes in interaction with developmental environment and possibly also asexuality, can have within‐species variation in seed and seedling traits that increase fitness in stressful environments.

  1. The functional response to, and preference for, the host density in a parasite were examined experimentally using an icheumon wasp, Exidechthis canescens, and its host Cadra cautella under controlled conditions.
  2. Wasps were more active in host-searching at higher than lower host densities. Percent parasitism increased rapidly with initial increments in host density and then tended to increase more slowly at higher host densities. A sigmoid functional response curve is indicated, which implies that the parasite is able to control its host even at low densities.
  3. Wasps actively selected areas of high host density in which to concentrate host-searching behavior.
  4. Host-searching by E. canescens is stimulated by the odor of the host when present, and by food in which hosts have developed but have been removed.
  5. Both the functional response and the host-density preference of the parasite are mediated by its host-searching behavior. This relationship is discussed in the context of population regulation.

Despite the ubiquity of biofilms in natural and man-made environments, research on surface-associated cells has focused primarily on solid–liquid interfaces. This study evaluated the extent to which bacterial cells persist on inanimate solid–air interfaces. The desiccation tolerance of bacterial strains isolated from indoor air, as well as of a test strain (Pseudomonas aeruginosa), was determined at different levels of relative humidity (RH) using the large droplet inoculation method in an aerosol chamber. The cells survived longer at lower (25 and 42%) than at high RH (95%). Four of the seven indoor strains selected for further study showed extended period of survival following deposition as 0.05–0.1?ml of washed culture followed by desiccation, each with different effects on the survival of the test strain, P. aeruginosa. A strain closely related to Arthrobacter species afforded the highest level of protection to the test strain. Even though the desiccation-tolerant strains survived when they were deposited as bioaerosols, the protective role towards the test strain was not observed when the latter was deposited as a bioaerosol. These, which are often-unculturable, bacteria may go undetected during routine monitoring of biofouling, thereby allowing them to act as reservoirs and extending the habitat range of undesired microorganisms.  相似文献

Summary We have examined the rDNA content of male and female adult flies having only one nucleolus organizer (NO), using X chromosomes carrying wild or partially deleted bobbed loci (Xbb +/O, Xbb +/XNO-and Xbb/O, Xbb/XNO -).The results show that in Xbb +/O and Xbb +/XNO -flies, where only somatic gene compensation is supposed to occur, the rDNA increase, although less pronounced than previously reported, is directly proportional to the number of rRNA genes initially present in the nucleolus organizer. In Xbb/O and in Xbb/XNO -flies the rDNA increase is relatively much higher than that observed in flies carrying bb + instead of bb. The infection cycle of low- and high-virulence strains of Leptospira interrogans was compared in fibroblasts and macrophages. L. interrogans serovar Lai strain Lai was used as a representative high-virulence strain, while L. interrogans serovars Pomona strain Luo was used as a low-virulence strain. L. biflexa serovar Patoc strain Patoc I, a nonparasitic strain of Leptospira, was used as a control. Both the high- and low-virulence strains could adhere to fibroblasts and macrophages using one or both ends of the spirochete, which was followed by phagocytosis of both strains. Both strains adhered more strongly to macrophages than fibroblasts. However, the high-virulence strain could invade the host-cell nucleus, while the low-virulence strain remained in phagosomes. The L. biflexa strain neither adhered to nor invaded either cell type. Both of the L. interrogans strains also induced cell death (mostly necrosis) of macrophages, whether or not the spirochetes were viable, suggesting that leptospiral virulence is unrelated to macrophage death. However, the high-virulence strain induced mainly necrosis in fibroblasts, while the low-virulence strain induced more apoptosis. Thus, the main feature distinguishing the two L. interrogans strains is the ability of the high-virulence strain to invade the host-cell nucleus and induce pro-inflammatory necrosis in fibroblasts.  相似文献

This study analyzes results of interspecies competition between the azuki bean weevil, Callosobruchus chinensis and the southern cowpea weevil, C. maculatus using the four geographical strains of each species.
  1. Fifteen combinations of one strain from each species were set up to compete. The strains of C. chinensis, rather than of C. maculatus, characteristically determine the eventual outcomes of competition. Some strains of C. chinensis (jC and kC) invariably won every encounter with C. maculatus. Another strain (nC) always lost its encounters, while one other strain (iC) won some encounters (:cQ and :cQ) and lost others (:tQ and :bQ). For any combination the competition results were deterministic and no reversal in outcome was observed among the replicates.
  2. The weakness of strain nC in competition is explained by its characteristics in single species populations, different greatly from other strains of C. chinensis, although it had the similar primary (individual) characteristics as other strains of C. chinensis. Strain iC had the shortest adult longevity in the four strains of C. chinensis although it behaved similar to strain jC at the single species population level. Especially under the food supply schedule of the present experiment the shortness of adult longevity might be the important factor determining the outcome.
  3. The relationship of the eight strains based on the individual and single species population characteristics, and that based on the competition results were very similar. Even when the competition results could not be explained by any one or two of these characteristics alone, the outcome would be largely decided by the overall biotic profile made by several characteristics.

The influence of five Thai soybean cultivars on nodulation competitiveness of four Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains was investigated. Cultures of B. japonicum strains THA5, THA6, USDA110 and SEMIA5019 were mixed with each other prior to inoculating germinated soybean seeds growing in Leonard jars with nitrogen-free nutrient solution. At harvest, nodule occupancy by each strain was determined by a fluorescent antibody technique. The term ‘general competitive ability’ was introduced to describe the average competitive nodule occupancy of a strain in paired co-inoculation with a number of strains on soybean. The nodule occupancies by an individual strain were directly correlated with the proportions of that strain in the inoculum mixtures. USDA110 showed higher nodulation competitiveness than the other strains on three of the five cultivars. The Thai strain THA6 appeared to be more competitive than USDA110 on cultivar SJ5. Thus, nodulation competitiveness of the B. japonicum strains was affected by the cultivars of soybean used.   1. Adult populations of two carabid species, a spring breeder, Carabus yaconinus, and an autumn breeder, Leptocarabus kumagaii, were studied in a lowland habitat (area: 16,500 m2) by pitfall sampling and mark-recapture method. The seasonal change in population number, age structure and mortality pattern were clarified and related to their seasonal life cycles.
  2. The survival rate of new adults from emergence to the first reproductive season was on the average 48% in C. yaconinus and 55% in L. kumagaii. In C. yaconinus, beetles which emerged later in the season survived more to the first reproductive season than those emerged earlier. C. yaconinus which had survived the pre-reproductive period mostly died out during the first reproductive season of 5 months, and about 8% survived until the second season. In L. kumagaii which had a short reproductive period in autumn, about 20% survived to the second reproductive season, and a small proportion even to the third reproductive season. Accordingly, the proportion of old beetles in the reproductive population was higher in L. kumagaii than in C. yaconinus.
  3. The reproductive population of C. yaconinus contained on the average 1600 beetles and produced 3300 new adults. the L. kumagaii population contained on the average about 530 reproductives in autumn, and about 820 beetles emerged in the following year. The recruitment rate of new adults of C. yaconinus was higher than that of L. kumagaii, and this resulted in its higher population density. In L. kumagaii, however, the high adult survivorship and iteroparous reproduction were important for its population growth.
  4. Relationship between seasonal adaptation and demographic strategies in the carabid populations were discussed.

  • 1 Aphid population dynamics in crops are often driven by interactions with their host plants, which can be extensively influenced by environmental change. Protective environments (i.e. plastic tunnels) are now frequently used for soft fruit production, which may affect the localized climate and alter such interactions. This two year study on red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) addressed how protected environments affected two aphid species; the large raspberry aphid Amphorophora idaei (LRA) and the small raspberry aphid Aphis idaei (SRA).
  • 2 Temperatures were higher (up to 7–10 °C) in tunnels compared with the field. Plants in tunnels grew approximately 1.4 cm/week faster and had lower (approximately 35%) foliar amino acid concentrations than plants in the field.
  • 3 Aphids affected plant growth differently depending on growing environment; they promoted plant growth by 18–37% in tunnels, although they had no such effect in the field. Aphids reduced total and essential amino acid concentrations, with SRA causing greatest reductions (approximately 40% and 33%, respectively).
  • 4 Aphid population sizes were similar in both environments, although individual LRA were smaller in tunnels (30% smaller in 2007) compared with those in the field. We suggest that faster aphid development rates inside warmer tunnels were not realized as a result of the variable effects of the growing environment on amino acid composition.
  • 5 We conclude that the increasing use of protected environments in crop production will not necessarily cause predictable increases in aphid populations, although it may alter aphid–plant interactions in terms of aphid‐induced changes to plant growth.

  1. The effects of two temporal food-availability regimes were examined on populations of flour beetles (Tribolium): (1) Food given once only and never renewed; (2) Food added in fixed intervals.
  2. In Case 1 there was a single peak in population size (and biomass) followed by a slow decline. The amount of biomass and numbers of adults produced were inversely related to the number of adult founders.
  3. In Case 2, the production of adults and biomass was not proportional to the amount of food; thus food was not the limiting factor in the experimental populations. The effect of medium conditioning may have been important in limiting population growth.
  4. Differences in productivity among the strains in Case 2 reflected their relative genetic variability following different mating systems in their past history.
  5. A measure of the food cost of maintaining 1g of biomass for 1 day (MC) is suggested. All strains showed a rather uniform MC, approximately 0.1g flour/1g biomass/day, except in the growth phase when most of the biomass was larval biomass. During this phase, food is utilized not only for metabolism but also for building new tissues, and the energy requirement must be higher.

  • 1 For their larval development, parasitoids depend on the quality and quantity of resources provided by a single host. Therefore, a close relationship is predicted between the size of the host at parasitism and the size of the emerging adult wasp. This relationship is less clear for koinobiont than for idiobiont parasitoids.
  • 2 As size differentiation in host species exhibiting sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is likely to occur already during larval development, in koinobiont larval endoparasitoids the size of the emerging adult may also be constrained based on the sex of the host caterpillar.
  • 3 Sex‐specific growth trajectories were compared in unparasitised Plutella xylostella caterpillars and in second and fourth instar hosts that were parasitised by the solitary larval koinobiont endoparasitoid Diadegma semiclausum. Both species exhibit SSD, where females are significantly larger than males.
  • 4 Healthy female P. xylostella caterpillars developed significantly faster than their male conspecifics. Host regulation induced by D. semiclausum parasitism depended on the instar attacked. Parasitism in second‐instar caterpillars reduced growth compared to healthy unparasitised caterpillars, whereas parasitism in fourth‐instar caterpillars arrested development. The reduction in growth was most pronounced in hosts producing male D. semiclausum.
  • 5 Parasitism itself had the largest impact on host growth. SSD in the parasitoid is mainly the result of differences in growth rate of the parasitoid–host complex producing male and female wasps and differences in exploitation of the host resources. Female wasps converted host biomass more efficiently into adult biomass than males.
