The response of the two most abundant cockchafer species in central Europe, Melolontha hippocastani and M. melolontha, towards phenol, mixtures of phenol with the leaf alcohol (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol and the known cockchafer pheromones, 1,4-benzoquinone (M. hippocastani) and toluquinone (M. melolontha), was investigated in the field. During the swarming period at dusk, phenol attracted males of both species, and enhanced the known attraction of cockchafer males towards (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol. A mixture of phenol plus (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol was less attractive for M. hippocastani males than a mixture of (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol plus 1,4-benzoquinone, whereas phenol plus (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol attracted as many M. melolontha males as a mixture of (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol plus toluquinone. In both species three component mixtures containing phenol, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, and the respective benzoquinone did not capture more males than two component mixtures consisting of only (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol and the benzoquinone. A possible role of phenol as another cockchafer sex pheromone component is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract The application aspects of chemicals which attract the forest cockchafer, Melolontha hippocastani F., were investigated in field and laboratory experiments. Previous studies have shown that males of M. hippocastani are attracted by a synthetic mixture of green leaf volatiles (GLV) and the sex pheromone 1,4‐benzoquinone (BQ), that synergistically enhances the male response to GLV. In the present study, we demonstrated that BQ also synergised the male response to one single component of the GLV mixture, the leaf alcohol (Z)‐3‐hexen‐1‐ol (Z‐3‐ol). BQ enhanced the attractiveness of Z‐3‐ol at doses between 0.05 and 5 mg per trap, reaching a maximum at 5 × 10?1 mg day?1. The addition of an insecticide (cyhalothrin) to traps baited with BQ and Z‐3‐ol did not affect the lures’ attractiveness. However, when a conidiospore formulation of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria brongniartii (Saccardo) Petch was added, the attractiveness of baited traps was significantly reduced. Furthermore, two types of dispensers baited with a solution of BQ in Z‐3‐ol at 20 mg ml?1 were tested over the entire 4‐week flight season. Both a membrane dispenser and a dispenser based on a porous polyethylene (PPE) absorbent disk attracted more males than controls over the entire 4 weeks. The membrane dispenser attracted as many males each week as a reference formulation that was renewed daily. Furthermore, the membrane dispenser attracted more males than the PPE dispenser in weeks 2–4, although laboratory experiments showed that the latter released even higher or at least equal amounts of the joined lure over the entire 4 weeks. However, estimation of the BQ/Z‐3‐ol ratios of the released material by solid phase microextraction (SPME) and coupled gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) revealed that the membrane dispenser released a higher proportion of BQ than the PPE dispenser in weeks 2–4. Therefore, a higher BQ/Z‐3‐ol ratio might be responsible for the advantage of the membrane dispenser in the field.  相似文献

Mate finding in the European cockchafer, Melolontha melolontha , has been investigated in the field. Our data suggest that mainly males show flight activity at dusk. In a landing cage bioassay, male cockchafers preferred cages baited with females over cages baited with males. Gas chromatographic analysis of beetle extracts with electronantennographic detection revealed the presence of electrophysiologically active compounds, among them toluquinone. In funnel trap bioassays none of these compounds was attractive towards males per se . A mixture of green leaf volatiles (GLV) mimicking the bouquet of mechanically damaged leaves was highly attractive to M. melolontha males. The attractiveness of the same GLV mixture was synergistically enhanced when toluquinone was added to the lure. GLV attract males to damaged leaves. Toluquinone as a sex pheromone indicates the presence of conspecific females and synergistically enhances the attractiveness of GLV.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that green leaf volatiles (GLVs) disrupt the response of overwintered pine shoot beetles, Tomicus piniperda (L.) to multiple-funnel traps baited with the attractive host volatile α-pinene. A combination of four GLV alcohols, 1-hexanol ( E )-2-hexen-1-ol ( Z )-2-hexen-1-ol, and ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol, caused 54 and 36% reduction in the number of pine shoot beetles captured in two separate trapping experiments. Similarly, a combination of the four alcohols plus two GLV aldehydes, hexanal and ( E )-2-hexenal, caused 38% reduction in the number of pine shoot beetles captured compared with α-pinene alone. A blend of the two GLV aldehydes was not disruptive. None of the four GLV alcohols nor the two GLV aldehydes were disruptive when tested individually. The finding that the blend of four GLV alcohols reduced attraction of T. piniperda supports the general hypothesis that GLVs common to nonhost angiosperms are disruptive to conifer-attacking bark beetles (Scolytidae).  相似文献

In cockchafers of the genus Melolontha, there is a marked intraspecific polymorphism for morphological characters, making some specimens of one species resemble another. A cytogenetic and molecular (mitochondrial COI gene sequence) study of typical and atypical forms of M. melolontha and M. hippocastani, captured at the same period and area, was performed. Karyotypes and haplotypes clearly characterize each taxon, placing atypical specimens in one or the other species unambiguously. This formally discards the role of hybridization in phenotypic resemblance, as usually proposed. Karyotypes and haplotypes were compared to those of M. pectoralis and Phyllophaga pleei, a more distantly related Melolonthinae, and some Dynastinae species, to reconstruct their ancestral karyotype. The karyotype of M. melolontha is the most derivative and that of P. pleei the most conserved among the Melolonthinae studied, which fits with the phylogeny established by COI gene analysis. Both karyotypes and COI haplotypes demonstrate the proximity of M. pectoralis and M. melolontha. The karyotype of M. melolontha is polymorphic, without relationship with morphological variations. Finally, the existence of similar morphological variations in different Melolontha species and chromosomal polymorphism in M. melolontha is discussed in relation with a network (reticulated) mode of speciation.  相似文献

Green leaf volatiles (GLV), a series of saturated and monounsaturated six-carbon aldehydes, alcohols, and esters are emitted by plants upon mechanical damage. Evidence is increasing that intact plants respond to GLV by activating their own defense mechanisms, thus suggesting that they function in plant-plant communication. The present paper demonstrates that exposure of maize plants to naturally occurring GLV, including (Z)-3-, (E)-2- and saturated derivatives, induce the emission of volatile blends typically associated with herbivory. Position or configuration of a double bond, but not the functional group of the GLV influenced the strength of the emissions. (Z)-3-Configured compounds elicited stronger responses than (E)-2- and saturated derivatives. The response to (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol increased linearly with the dose between 200 and 1000 nmol per plant. Not only the naturally occurring (E)-2-hexenal, but also (E)-2-pentenal and (E)-2-heptenal induced maize plants, although to a lesser extent. Externally applied terpenoids [(3E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene, beta-caryophyllene, and (E)-beta-farnesene] did not significantly increase the total amount of inducible volatiles in maize. Of three tested maize cultivars Delprim and Pactol responded much stronger than Attribut. Recovery experiments in the presence and absence of maize plants demonstrated that large proportions of externally applied GLV were assimilated by the plants, whereas (3E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene was recovered in much higher amounts. The results furthermore suggested that plants converted a part of the assimilated leaf aldehydes and alcohols to the respective acetates. We propose that GLV not only can alert neighboring plants, but may facilitate intra-plant information transfer and can help mediate the systemic defense response in a plant.  相似文献

1 The two most abundant cockchafer species in Europe, the forest cockchafer Melolontha hippocastani Fabr. and the European cockchafer Melolontha melolontha L., tend to form calamitous mass breedings with casual reports on sympatric and simultaneous occurrence. 2 Both species are known to use feeding‐induced green leaf volatiles (GLV) as primary attractants (sexual kairomones) for mate finding. The attractiveness of GLV is enhanced by the sex pheromones 1,4‐benzoquinone in M. hippocastani and toluquinone in M. melolontha. Phenol attracts males from both species. All three compounds are present in females of both species. 3 In the present study, it is confirmed that only male M. melolontha perform the typical swarming flight at dusk, as has already been shown for M. hippocastani. Furthermore, whether swarming Melolontha males were cross‐attracted to heterospecific females, and whether males could discriminate olfactorily between conspecific and heterospecific females, was tested in the field. 4 Males of both species preferred females when given the choice between females and males of the other species. However, they preferred conspecific females when females from both species were offered simultaneously. 5 The results suggest that species‐specific pheromone blends contribute to precopulatory reproductive isolation in sympatric populations of M. melolontha and M. hippocastani, but are not mutually exclusive or indispensable prerequisites for mate finding as in other insects.  相似文献

Diaeretiella rapae (M'Intosh) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitizes many aphid species, including cabbage aphids on cruciferous crops and Russian wheat aphids on cereal crops. We investigated the olfactory perception of D. rapae to semiochemicals that may be encountered in these two environments while searching for hosts or for mates. We conducted electroantennogram and flight-tunnel experiments on male and female D. rapae and found marked differences between sexes. Cruciferous volatiles elicited physiological and behavioral responses by females but not by males. Males and females responded similarly to (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, a component of green-leaf volatiles, in both electroantennogram and flight-tunnel assays. Female wasps responded similarly regardless of prior oviposition experience or population origin. Likewise, mating history and aphid presence did not increase responsiveness toward these semiochemicals.  相似文献

Mate finding in the forest cockchafer, Melolontha hippocastani, occurs during a spectacular swarming period at dusk. The swarming flights are mainly performed by males whereas most of the females stay within the host trees and continue feeding. Males orientate towards damage-induced green leaf volatiles (GLV) allowing location of mechanically damaged foliage. In order to distinguish between unspecific leaf damage and damage caused by feeding females, male cockchafers orientate by a sex attractant. Here we show this compound to be 1,4-benzoquinone, which has been known for more than 40 years as a highly effective defence compound used by numerous arthropod species to repel enemies. 1,4-benzoquinone synergistically increased the number of males caught in GLV-baited funnel traps during the swarming period. Significantly more males landed on wire cages baited with a combination of 1,4-benzoquinone and GLV than on cages baited with only GLV. The results suggest that the sex pheromone of M. hippocastani might have evolved from a primary role as a defence compound.  相似文献

Abstract:  Campoletis chlorideae Uchida (Hym., Ichneumonidae) is an important solitary koinobiont larval endoparasitoid of many noctuid species including Mythmna separata (Lep., Noctuidae). In the present study, maize volatiles induced by feeding damage of M. separata were found to be attractive to C. chlorideae in a Y-tube olfactometer. Eleven compounds were released in significant amounts from M. separata -infested maize seedlings, of which five compounds, ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol, ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate, ( E )-2-hexenal, linalool and phenylethyl acetate were chosen for electrophysiological and behavioural tests. All five compounds elicited electroantennogram responses in C. chlorideae . However, only pure ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate and linalool were attractive to the parasitoid in the Y-tube. Interestingly, linalool was also attractive to starved parasitoids over a range of doses tested. These results suggested that ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate and linalool may be key infochemicals in the host-foraging behaviour of C. chlorideae , and linalool may act as a food-source signal for the parasitoid.  相似文献

Among numerous other factors, host‐plant volatiles may affect selection of food plants by herbivorous insects. The blue willow leaf beetle, Phratora vulgatissima (L.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is known to differentiate between willow species and genotypes. However, so far no knowledge is available on the physiological abilities of this leaf beetle to respond to willow volatiles. In this study, we recorded electroantennograms of male and female P. vulgatissima to volatiles from two Salix viminalis L. (Salicaceae) genotypes: Jorr and 78021. The headspace of these genotypes were analysed by coupled gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. In addition to known green leaf volatiles (GLV), several terpenoid components were found. Both males and females of P. vulgatissima showed strong responses to the GLVs (Z)3‐hexenol and (Z)‐3‐hexenyl acetate, and moderate responses to (E)‐ocimene and β‐caryophyllene. Females, but not males, also responded to R‐(+)‐limonene. This work represents a further step to identify substances relevant for the orientation of P. vulgatissima to host plants.  相似文献

Diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is one of the most serious pests of Brassicaceae crops worldwide. Electrophysiological and behavioral responses of P. xylostella to green leaf volatiles (GLVs) alone or together with its female sex pheromone were investigated in laboratory and field. GLVs 1-hexanol and (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol elicited strong electroantennographic responses from unmated male and female P. xylostella, whereas (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate only produced a relatively weak response. The behavioral responses of unmated moths to GLVs were further tested in Y-tube olfactometer experiments. (E)-2-Hexenal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate induced attraction of males, reaching up to 50%, significantly higher than the response to the unbaited control arm. In field experiments conducted in 2008 and 2009, significantly more moths were captured in traps baited with synthetic sex pheromone with either (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate alone or a blend of (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, and (E)-2-hexenal compared with sex pheromone alone and other blend mixtures. These results demonstrated that GLVs could be used to enhance the attraction of P. xylostella males to sex pheromone-baited traps.  相似文献

Analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) of volatiles from virgin female emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire confirmed the emission of (3Z)-lactone [(3Z)-dodecen-12-olide] but not its geometric isomer, (3E)-lactone [(3E)-dodecen-12-olide]. Gas chromatographic/electroantennographic (GC/EAD) analysis of synthetic (3Z)-lactone, which contained 10% (3E)-lactone, showed a strong response of male and female antennae to both isomers. EAG analysis with 0.01- to 100-μg dosages showed a positive dose response, with females giving significantly higher responses than males. In field experiments with sticky purple prism traps, neither lactone isomer affected catches when combined with ash foliar or cortical volatiles (green leaf volatiles or Phoebe oil, respectively). However, on green prism traps, the (3Z)-lactone significantly increased capture of male A. planipennis when traps were deployed in the canopy. Captures of males on traps with both (3E)-lactone and (3Z)-hexenol or with (3Z)-lactone and (3Z)-hexenol were increased by 45-100%, respectively, compared with traps baited with just (3Z)-hexenol. In olfactometer bioassays, males were significantly attracted to (3E)-lactone, but not the (3Z)-lactone or a 60:40 (3E):(3Z) blend. The combination of either (3E)- or (3Z)-lactone with Phoebe oil was not significantly attractive to males. Males were highly attracted to (3Z)-hexenol and the (3Z)-lactone + (3Z)-hexenol combination, providing support for the field trapping results. These data are the first to demonstrate increased attraction with a combination of a pheromone and a green leaf volatile in a Buprestid species.  相似文献

We conducted trapping experiments for the emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) in Michigan, U.S.A., and Ontario, Canada, to compare unbaited light green sticky prism traps with traps baited with phoebe oil, (Z)-3-hexenol (Z3-6:OH), or blends of other green leaf volatiles (GLVs) with Z3-6:OH. Traps were placed in the lower canopy of ash trees (Fraxinus spp.). Catches with Z3-6:OH-baited traps showed a significant male bias and these traps caught significantly more males than the unbaited controls at both sites. They were also superior to phoebe oil-baited traps and those baited with GLV blends. Catches with phoebe oil showed a significant female bias but there was no difference in the number of females captured between traps baited with phoebe oil or Z3-6:OH lures. Catches were analyzed at regular time intervals to examine the response of A. planipennis to the lures over the course of the flight season. Z3-6:OH-baited traps consistently caught more males than the controls at each interval throughout the flight season. Catches of females with Z3-6:OH and phoebe oil were significantly better than the controls early in the flight season but declined to control levels by midseason. Our results suggest that Z3-6:OH-baited green traps placed in the ash canopy would be a superior lure for detecting and monitoring A. planipennis throughout the flight season.  相似文献

As measured by electroantennograms (EAG), both male and female obliquebanded leafrollers, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), and redbanded leafrollers, Argyrotaeniavelutinana (Walker), were similarly sensitive to host-related plant volatiles: trans-2-hexenal, benzaldehyde, 1-hexenol, cis-3-hexen-1-ol, geraniol, linalool, (+)-limonene, hexenal and trans-2-hexenol. Females of both species were similarly sensitive to the shared major component of their sex-attractant pheromone ((Z)11-14:Ac). Continuous 60 min pre-exposure of male and female C. rosaceana and A. velutinana to successively higher concentrations of a mixture of the nine plant volatiles in Teflon chambers with continuous air exchange caused a dosage-dependent increase in subsequent responsiveness (sensitization) to green leaf volatiles, as measured by EAGs. In addition, 60 min of pre-exposure of male C. rosaceana to certain individual volatiles ((+)-limonene, geraniol, benzaldehyde) increased EAGs nearly as much as did the mixture of nine volatiles. Pre-exposures to the nine plant-volatile mixture at concentrations achieved by 100 microg and 1 mg loading dosages in 100 microl of mineral oil significantly increased EAG depolarization to pheromone (cross-sensitization) in males but not females of both moth species. Antennae of male C. rosaceana pre-injected with 100 microg of octopamine (OA) without volatile pre-exposure exhibited sensitization nearly identical to that induced by pre-exposing moths to sensitizing concentrations of the plant-volatile mixture. Moreover, injection of the OA antagonist chlorpromazine (CP) blocked sensitization by the plant-volatile pre-exposure. Collectively, these findings suggest that exposures of tortricid moths to certain host-plant related volatiles may modulate subsequent olfactory sensitivity to behaviorally relevant chemical cues and that plant-volatile induced sensitization may be octopamine mediated.  相似文献

Abstract  Effects of maize ( Zea mays L.) volatiles induced by larvae of the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée), on the orientation behaviors of Asian corn borer larvae and oviposition of the females were investigated. Nineteen volatile chemicals, with terpenes being the major components, were identified from maize plants attacked by third instar Asian corn borer larvae. Coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analyses revealed some electroantennographic differences between female and male Asian corn borer antennae in response to larvae-induced maize volatiles; female responded to ( E )-2-hexenal, nonanal, ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol and three unknown compounds while the male only responded to ( E )-2-hexenal, nonanal and one unknown compound. In laboratory orientation bioassays, Asian corn borer neonate larvae were attracted to extracts collected from Asian corn borer-damaged plants as well as to synthetic farnesene, but were repelled by ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol. In laboratory oviposition bioassays, gravid females laid fewer eggs on plants damaged by larvae than on mechanically damaged plants or undamaged plants. Adult Asian corn borer females deposited fewer eggs on wax paper treated with ( E )-2-hexenal or ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol than on wax paper treated with hexane (control). The results suggest that Asian corn borer can affect the behaviors of conspecific larvae and adults by changing host plant volatiles.  相似文献

A chemical analysis of the crude sex pheromone gland extracts of virgin calling Paranthrene tabaniformis females, obtained from the European part of Kazakhstan, revealed the presence of five compounds: (3E,13Z)-octadeca-3,13-dien-1-ol (E3,Z13-18:OH), (3Z,13Z)-octadeca-3,13-dien-1-ol (Z3,Z13-18:OH), (2E,13Z)-octadeca-2,13-dien-1-ol (E2,Z13-18:OH), (13Z)-octadec-13-en-1-ol (Z13-18:OH), and octadecan-1-ol (18:OH) at the ratios 64.0:32.4: 1.4:0.9:1.3, which are structurally related to sex pheromone components of clearwing moths. Our previous field tests showed synergistic effects of Z3,Z13-18:OH and E2,Z13-18:OH to attract P. tabaniformis males, when these compounds were tested in binary mixtures with the known sex pheromone E3,Z13-18:OH. The three dienic alcohols should all be considered as sex pheromone components of the P. tabaniformis species, while the role of Z13-18:OH and 18:OH remained unclear.  相似文献

Genetic polymorphism in strains of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria brongniartii , isolated from Melolontha melolontha and M. hippocastani in different Europeansites, was investigated by RAPD-PCR. Strains of B. brongniartii isolated in Valled'Aosta (Italy) were highly virulent to M. melolontha , and potential relatednessamong these strains was investigated with RAPD markers obtained from 16 10-bp primers. Thisstudy shows that the strains analysed are closely related. The subdivision of the European strainsinto subgroups, obtained from numerical analyses of the data, does not appear to relate to eithergeographical origin or host insect. Individual strain-specific patterns of RAPD bands wereidentified for 24 strains. The remaining four strains consisted of two pairs, each of which showedidentical RAPD patterns.  相似文献

1 Adult wheat stem sawflies Cephus cinctus, pests of cultivated cereals that also infests wild grasses, migrate into wheat fields where they oviposit in elongating, succulent stems.
2 Volatiles released by wheat plants at susceptible stages were analyzed to determine potential semiochemical compounds. Seven major compounds were identified and quantified.
3 A Y-tube bioassay was developed to evaluate upwind orientation of adult sawflies in response to an airstream that passed over elongated wheat plants. The bioassay was also conducted with synthetic volatile compounds. The compounds were tested using a range of concentrations spanning those identified in the airstream passing over wheat plants.
4 A significant number of adult females were attracted to wheat plants when given a choice of either purified air or the air passing over plants.
5 A significant number of female C. cinctus were attracted to ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate, β-ocimene, and ( Z )-3-hexen-1-ol, but were repelled by 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one. Females did not respond to ( E )-2-hexenal, or ( E )-2-hexenyl acetate. The behavioural responses were concentration dependent; the highest tested concentration of ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate was repellent to females of this species.
6 Adult males did not discriminate between air passing over wheat plants and air from a purified airstream. Males did not respond to any tested synthetic compound at any concentration.
7 The present study demonstrates for the first time that adult females of wheat stem sawfly display innate behaviours in response to synthetic volatiles. These results provide a basis for the potential development of resistant wheat varieties and for the development of semiochemically-based pest management.  相似文献
